Topic of today’s rant: PEOPLE PRINTING AND SELLING FANFIC & GENERAL FANDOM ETIQUETTE

Profiting from fanfic will ruin it for everyone.

I want all of you who gift us your stories to be safe from lawsuits and beware that your content might be stolen.

Not to be on a soapbox and preaching to the choir but here are.

There are many authors pulling their work off AO3 because people acting on bad faith are printing and binding fics to sell on etsy thus infringing copyright laws. Fanfic has always been a grey area and we are allowed to exist in this grey area because we are not profiting from it. The minute money is exchanged, every party involved is breaking the law.

Why am I complaining about this yet again? Because we might be deprived from enjoying fanfic with the freedom we currently have because the fanfic authors will fear getting sued. If third parties are stealing our work and selling it, publishers and studios won’t care to know who sold it. It is your handle (thus IP address) on the sold fanfic. Because, get this, they are doing downloads straight from ao3 with your usernames.

Manacled is being pulled from ao3 because the author will publish it as a book. People are putting the book at risk by selling printed versions of it on Etsy.

I believe many of us who fall on the 20 years of reading fanfic side rather than on the 20 year olds reading fanfic will remember the Anne Rice days. These are not fully over because her son is carrying on the legacy of suing everyone who writes fanfic of her work. And if I may say, she didn’t invent vampires and should’ve taken many seats. I digress.

I am not sure of the levels of awareness within this community and to what extent it can affect all of us. TikTok is a massive contributor to this problem (as it is to many other problems. Again, I digress) since booktok and the binding folks discovered ao3.

You might think, I only post on tumblr so my content is safe. Well, they are finding their way here too. They cringe because tumblr is for old people but they still make their way here with their bad manners and pillaging behaviour.

I want all of you who gift your stories to be safe, lawsuit free, not lose your content and not be afraid of sharing.

I wish I had a definitive solution to this problem but I can only think of small actions:

report the etsy accounts selling fanfic/fanfic commissions,

report the TikTok accounts selling binding for fanfic work,

go back to the days of putting disclaimers on your notes that you don’t own the characters and you are not profiting from the story.

Tagging some authors* here for visibility so you can cascade to more people. Absolutely no pressure tag.

Hot Seat - oneshot.

Summary: Henry is interviewed about life post-The Witcher…

Hot Seat - oneshot.

My first thought upon starting my interview with Henry Cavill is that I must have got my lines crossed. Instead of the 39-year-old Jersey-born actor, the featureless wall on the screen in front of reveals a woman. She quickly introduces herself and apologises for his absence. "Our puppy got into a multipack of toilet rolls and is still wreaking havoc, but he'll be right with you." This, as it turns out, is his partner Ollie. The 33-year-old financial advisor (she politely asks me not to give her full name as apparently "the people who care already know it"), has been with the actor for the better part of a decade though it's seldom publicised. They're occasionally pictured together but Henry, known for being one of the more private Hollywood actors, has given away few details about the relationship.

This, however, doesn't stop her from graciously chatting with me while we await his arrival. Having a son with her name, I ask if it's short for something else. "No, just Ollie. My parents were fans of Laurel and Hardy," she says with a shrug. So she's not actually Olivia? "Nope, though I suppose it could have been worse, they could have called me Stan," she replies drily. I tell her my wife and I are expecting a girl in the summer. "Oh how lovely - don't give her a boy's name." Duly noted. I then ask after Kal, Henry's longtime canine companion, and she assures me he's still alive and kicking. So what prompted the puppy? "Anniversary gift," she says between sips of water, though she doesn't give a name or clarify who gifted who. Moving on, I ask if she has any tips for interviewing Henry. "Talk slowly," comes her immediate response. It's not difficult to see how he fell for her, big twinkly eyes and a throaty laugh betray a quick wit that's similar to his own. I venture to ask what it's like being in a relationship with him. "Agonising. I mean his looks alone, I'm at a loss," she deadpans before another laugh. And the fame? "Honestly, it's not something I really think about. Our day-to-day life is very normal."

As if on cue, Henry enters the room with a large and very fluffy puppy trying to wriggle free of his arms. His eyes flash briefly with concern but she gives him a reassuring smile, thanks me for my patience, and wishes me well. She then pats Henry on the chest, tells him to behave himself, and disappears with the puppy in tow. The screen now fills with his impressive frame though his demeanour is infinitely milder - if slightly harried. "My apologies John. Akita's - can't live with them, can't live without them." Much has been made of the peaks and troughs of his Hollywood career. At one point in the early aughts, he'd missed out on multiple high-profile roles (Henry Cavill: Hollywood's unluckiest actor?) Finally bagging Superman in 2013 with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, he proved capable of big returns and even bigger popularity (Henry Cavill: Superman for a new generation).

This makes news of his recent departure from both Netflix's The Witcher (ostensibly because of creative differences), and DC's Superman franchise (due to the recent hiring of James Gunn as the studio's creative leader), all the more stupefying. But whether or not he really is Hollywood's 'unluckiest' actor, this isn't a term that reflects his life outside of the job, something which definitely marks him out from his contemporaries. In addition to a much-protected relationship (neither he nor his publicist confirms the status of it despite appearing to wear a wedding ring), he hails from a loving family and has a close-knit group of friends. He withdrew from a recent project (for reasons unrelated to the project itself), but is now in talks to appear in and produce an adaptation of Warhammer 40, 000 after Amazon recently secured the rights to the popular tabletop game.

It's actually not the first time I've met Henry. Our paths once crossed some years ago in a hotel lobby though this brief encounter was part of a jam-packed press tour. Today's meeting isn't scheduled for a considerably longer time, but there's more than enough to discuss. A colleague did however warn me that despite a more ingenuous nature, he can make for a difficult interviewee. For the first part of our interview, I would be inclined to agree. Though pleasant, his answers border on glib and this is perhaps unsurprising given the recent twists and turns of his career. Happily, he warms up as our fourty minutes go by and on this occasion, is more revealing about life away from the cameras…

J: First thing's first, are you watching the Six Nations (an annual international men's rugby union competition)?

H: Yeah, it's been dismal though (England won just two out of five matches)… doesn't bode well for the World Cup does it?

J: No it doesn't. Now I know you can't say much at the moment about more recent as well as upcoming projects, but I wanted to get your take on the development of IPs for modern audiences. More than ever it seems a rather precarious business…

H: I think that's a fair assessment. There's lots of competition and only a finite amount of resources, so balancing what audiences want against the financial gains is tricky.

J: So what's the solution?

H: Are you trying to get me into trouble (laughs)? It depends. I mean, you can experiment a bit more with big projects. But for niche ventures, I think it's probably better to lean on the source material and fanbases already there.

J: But do you think there's a general fatigue with certain genres at the moment?

H: Perhaps, but that's why it's all the more important to look at the project as a whole. More often than not, if a project sinks it's on the project, not the audience.

J: Surely events such as the pandemic have had a huge impact though?

H: Yeah, definitely. But I don't think it's that difficult to produce big and/or successful entertainment because if anything, the need has never been stronger. It may just require studios to slow down a bit and think harder about each stage of development.

J: Do you feel more at peace with your career these days?

H: I would say so. I mean it's not an industry you ever feel secure in because that's not really the nature of it. But I still feel the same rush and excitement. I think there's a tendency to forget that actors act for the same reason people enjoy consuming our work. We like to escape and have fun as well.

J: What has it taught you about yourself?

H: Well for one it's bettered my patience (laughs). There's also nothing like acting to improve your physique (laughs).

J: Do you still feel the same pressures to look and perform a certain way?

H: I mean to an extent it's just the expectation and I completely respect that - if you're spending millions bringing, say, Superman to life, whoever plays him must at the very least, look like him.

J: And what are your thoughts now that that franchise will be moving ahead without you?

H: Well, for one, I'm not as devastated as everyone seems to think (laughs). I had a blast making those films and I was looking forward to expanding on what was created but the workouts were something else. As were the press tours (laugh).

J: Would you say that's one of the biggest drawbacks now for actors?

H: I suppose. I mean who honestly wants to be hooked up to a lie detector and asked leading questions (laughs)? I find it a bit unfair at times. I'm not suggesting for one minute that actors aren't immensely lucky or privileged. Of course, what we do is comparatively easy. But the amount of exposure will always be a double-edged sword, no question.

J: You've said in the past you're not a huge fan of social media, do you think it's essential to what you do?

H: Perhaps not essential but it's undeniably very useful. And I have no issue in sharing parts of my life with those who find it interesting. But I also don’t see the harm in a bit of mystery, there's no need to upload and share absolutely everything.

J: More male stars are speaking up about the double standards in how they're treated by fans and the wider public. Are those sentiments you share?

H: Yes and no. I mean most of the time it's harmless and of course very flattering, but I think it's always best to put others at ease rather than risk making them uncomfortable. Of course, everyone has different ideas on how to do that (laughs) but as the old saying goes, do unto others…

J: I imagine it's different when that attention is also directed at those closest to you?

H: Oh absolutely. My friends and family didn't sign up for that but luckily they're good-natured about it.

J: It seems the lines are becoming more and more blurred though…

H: Yeah, and that's a shame. But it's also why you need to be prudent about how much of it you elicit and engage in.

J: But do you take issue with the amount of gossip? I imagine it's hard knowing it's out there when there's not much you can do about it.

H: I try and look for the silver linings, I mean if people are that invested it means you at least have some relevance still. Besides, I have a very happy, successful life outside of what I do and that makes all the difference.

J: I am curious to know how you've managed to make that work…

H: Well I don't want to give the impression that it's easy because it's not. Spending so much time away from the people you love is easily the worst thing about this job and it's something I'm always trying to improve.

J: You're also approaching 40, has that caused you to stop and take stock?

H: Thanks for the reminder (laughs). Nah I'm in a good place about it actually. Well, for now… (laughs).

J: Are there any roles, in particular, you still wish to play?

H: Not really. I think most people see me as an action star and I'm happy to remain so. It seems to be what I excel at though I've also enjoyed branching out into more comedic roles. More of those would be nice.

J: So you've no burning desires for the future? What about regrets?

H: I wouldn't say that (laughs). There's some stuff I've yet to get around to, as for regrets I've very few.

J: Such as?

H: Well, some of the films I've made for starters (laughs). Although that's not really fair as there's always something to take away from those experiences.

J: What about personally?

H: Um (pauses), nothing springs to mind. I wish I'd met my better half a lot sooner. But we've been together for over seven years so I can't complain.

J: If I remember rightly you'd just started seeing each other the last time we spoke.

H: That's right! God, where's the time gone?

J: How were the lockdowns for you both?

H: You know, as scary and traumatic as that time was, I can honestly say it reaffirmed to me that I'd made the right choices.

J: Did she feel similarly?

H: Perhaps not at first (laughs).

J: You certainly seem to share the same sense of humour. You know she introduced herself as the maid?

H: (Looks around) I hope you didn't fall for it… (laughs). And she's far more warped, trust me. She's just better at hiding it (laughs).

J: Care to give some examples?

H: Oh God, where do I start (laughs)? To be honest I'm not sure I can without making her look completely mad… though that wouldn't be an unfair assessment (laughs) (slight pause). She's a nightmare to text. Her idea of messaging me usually involves repeating a word until I manage to guess what on earth she's on about (laughs). I was in London a few days back and I messaged her asking how her morning had gone and she just kept responding with the word 'log' (laughs). So there I was, in a meeting with my business manager, trying to figure out at the back of my mind what she meant. Did she want to log a complaint (laughs)? Was I supposed to bring home a chocolate log? Did we need more firewood (laughs)? Turns out she'd just tripped over one while walking the dogs. See? Mad (grins).

J: My wife's like that but with GIFs.

H: Yeah, I get those less often but to maximum effect (laughs). Like I remember when I was getting fitted for the suits I wore in The Man from Uncle. I sent her a picture of my favourite and she immediately winged back a gif of Sterling Archer (from FX's 2009 animated sitcom Archer) (laughs).

J: Is she indifferent to what you do?

H: It's not that she's indifferent, she's just not taken in by it and thank God because it helps keep me sane.

J: So she likes to keep you on your toes?

H: Oh yeah, our life's never dull (laugh). The last time I was away filming, I'd stupidly warned her beforehand not to go anywhere near this rare Warhammer figurine that a friend sent me. So cue the photos of it in the dust container of the Dyson, at the edge of Kal's food bowl as his face was in it… she even sent me one of it in the washing machine just as it was filling up with water. That one warranted a phone call (laughs).

J: Oh dear. Did it survive?

H: Annoyingly it was absolutely fine… she's done worse (laughs).

J: Such as?

H: Er, well there was the time I was in New Zealand shooting the helicopter sequence for Mission Impossible: Fallout. I've talked about it before so I'm not going to rehash it but the conditions were extreme so everyone was pretty miserable. What made it worse was that a few weeks before, she'd broken her hand - the story of how she did that is actually funnier than the one I'm about to tell—

J: What happened?

H: … No, I can't say. She'd kill me (laughs). Anyway, being halfway across the world I couldn't get back to her and was in a bit of a state about it. So to cheer me up, one afternoon she sends me a video of her at the physio's office and in it (laughs)… she's wearing one of those old-fashioned prosthetic split hooks (laughs). What's amazing is how she somehow managed to rope the physio in, like as soon as he comes into the room she puts her phone down so as not to film him (laughs).

J: Where on earth did she get a split hook?

H: I know right? She told me Etsy but God knows… apparently the physio provided the arm it was attached to (laughs). So there I was, suspended above the Southern Alps, laughing the hardest I've ever laughed in my life.

J: Did you show it to Tom Cruise?

H: Oh yeah.

J: And what did he say?

H: She's a keeper (laughs). I'd play it for you but it got deleted when I changed phones a little while back.

J: Well, that's disappointing. What happened to the hook?

H: When I finally came home we had some champagne to celebrate and when I went to the drawer, I found she'd chucked it in there with the bottle openers (laughs).

J: Are there any more stories you can share?

H: Yeah, but I think I've said enough (laughs).

J: What makes the two of you such a good match do you think?

H: She's got a long fuse which certainly helps (laughs). We were just meant for each other (shrugs).

J: Did it feel that way quite early on? I know it did with my wife.

H: Oh yeah, almost instantly. When you know, you know.

A week after we meet I receive a gift at the office - a box of homemade cookies (which are heavenly) and a beautiful baby blanket. Accompanied is a note which first apologises for the gift's tardiness 'Henry ate the first batch,' thanks me for a good interview and then encourages some skepticism of the tales told as 'they're only mostly true.' Either way, I concede that he is indeed a lucky man.

This post is in three parts:

When Harry got the Heart tattoo

70 Heart Kisses (1D years), and

70 Heart Kisses continued. (Solo career)

The amazing @womanexile and @this-daydream-is-dangerous-13started this off with finding a good chunk of these. This is by no means a complete list, I think that would be impossible. It’s also important to note that only Harry knows what this tattoo is about, why he kisses it or if that is for one person and who that is.

2017

After no performances in 2016 the heart kiss returned with HS1 but less frequently. In early 2016 Harry and Taylor had been close but by 2017 Taylor was dating Joe and Harry was very emotional on stage. See 2017 timeline. Harry also started performing with a guitar which gave his arms something to do and I think less kisses as a result.

Late March 2017 - London- During his Behind the Album performance for HS1, he not only kissed the heart, he also kisses the guitar it’s thought she had given him as a gift! This was a major moment for Harry and one he was emotional in. He is good at first but there’s a head in hands moment at 28:10. Then, emotional. Time stamps 32:09 during Sweet Creature 37:48 guitar kiss during ESNY 52:45 kisses OTHER arm during SOTT (when he was explaining the rest of the concert to that nervous fan in July, he described this song as “emotional but hopeful” so maybe that’s a hopeful thing, that arm has ‘Things I can’/the Eagle)

13 May 2017 - London- secret gig at the Garage in Islington - pink pants black shirt 7:52 during Sweet Creature

19 May 2017 - Troubadour, LA, on the eve of their 5 year anniversary of May 20th, while performing Leather and Lace with Stevie Nicks (1:18), Harry started crying and kissed the heart. Harry was really excited throughout the show, they performed two ghosts as a duet after which he said he was losing his s*** (but in a cool way, with a point to presumably James).

28 September 2017 - Radio City NY - Story of my life may have an aborted arm kiss (2:30) FTDT also (3:35). On Harry and Taylor’s 28 September anniversary. Taylor marked the day with a 70 song ‘Taylor loves’ Spotify playlist.

14 October 2017 - Phoenix - During Meet me in the Hallway (1:39). After “I walked the streets all day” before “running with the thieves”. This was Harry's last US show and he returned to Europe. His next show was in Paris where he cried twice in FTDT on 'even my phone misses your call' twice. (1:55 and again 3:30)

2 November 2017 - Glasgow- Sweet Creature on “you bring me home” (maybe, this tour had tricky lighting) (2:19) Kiwi and Reputation were released soon after.

2018

12 June 2018 - Nashville - Sweet Creature (2:45) Harry moves to kiss his arm but doesn’t after “you bring me home” he was in Taylor’s home city.

30 June 2018 - Chicago - Sweet Creature, a possible other arm kiss (5:11). Taylor and Harry were both in Chicago, Taylor played New Years Day with an introduction about jumping into icy pools that Taylor Nation has cut from their version.

2 July 2018 - St Paul - Only Angel - the other arm at 3:30 and the heart at 4:33. On the same night Harry changed the lyric of “running with wolves” to “running with you” (2:00) Taylor had played this stadium the night she had the temper trap song as arm lyrics which Harry tattooed on its anniversary. Taylor had been in nearby Chicago when Harry was there the day before and not seen this day.

In July 2020 Taylor released Cardigan with a reference to a ‘Tattoo Kiss’:

The later we go the less we really know about what is going on. The heart kisses may also have different meanings.

The 2021 timeline is interesting, starting with talking at the Grammy’s then the Brits, Harry finished writing Harry’s House and Taylor started Midnights in this period.

22 September 2021 - St Paul - Falling, with Two Ghosts intro (4:31). Wildest Dreams TV was released a few days earlier, Harry and Taylor had spent time in St Paul in the past.

25 September 2021 - Chicago - Falling, at the end twice with a smile and again during Adore you. When Harry last played Chicago Taylor was also there.

21 October 2021 - Uncasville, during thank you speech. Harry and Taylor had been in Nashville at the same time earlier that month when Harry had written Satellite.

25 October 2021 - Boston - Falling. An old selfie of Joe and Taylor from 2016 leaked a few days earlier.

27 October 2021 - Atlanta - the start of Falling (0:09) right arm kiss. On the anniversary of 1989’s release. On the same day Taylor posted an instagram reel captioned ‘Basic autumn lovers RISE’ reenacting a 2014 Tumblr post including trying lyrics to ATW ‘Just between us did he love affair maim you too?’

10 November 2021 - Sacramento - Falling - on ‘it kills me we have run out of things to say’ link. Harry wore Red to celebrate the Re-record of Red TV, which is the first of Taylor's albums with songs about Harry.

13 November 2021 - Arizona, Falling with Two Ghosts intro (2:17), Red TV was released the day before.

19 November 2021 - LA, The Forum, in the welcome speech after thanking his support act. Taylor was in Panama to visit Joe, after Taylor returned for the All Too Well premier she wrote the majority of Midnights including You’re Losing Me.

28 November 2021 - Long Island - Falling (4:08) Right arm kiss. After this show Harry was MIA and Olivia seen alone. The next week, Taylor wrote You’re Losing me and wore a Gucci Lion Ring to a party.

2022

As above, we know less about Harry’s relationships now, however the 2022 timeline is also interesting. Taylor completed Midnights and based on it’s lyrics, her relationship with Joe was not great. Harry released Harry’s House and at the end of the year broke up with Olivia.

20 May 2022 - NYC - ONO - start of Satellite (1:13) another link. On Harry’s House Release, an important life event, in New York, on the anniversary of 20 May at the start of performing Satellite for the first time.

26 June 2022 - Hamburg during his welcome speech when introducing the support act. Harry was on his European tour dates, in the last months of dating OW. These were the first months of Harry touring the Harry’s House songs.

29 June 2022 - Stockholm - introducing Matilda (1:12 and again at 1:36) Harry said it was great to be back in Sweden (he once tweeted that same phrasing at a time Taylor was MIA in Europe and he posted a colour IG photo) and that he is happiest performing.

1 July 2022 - Oslo when inducing Matilda, Harry told the story about the party bus, that Oslo has a special place in his heart then that Matilda has nothing to do with that story but is special. (1:50) and again when introducing WMYB (0:06)

11 July 2022 - Munich during Adore You and LOML.

16 July 2022 Vienna - during Adore you, after the crowd saying let me adore you and him saying “okay”

5 July 2022 - Paris - after saying “I love Paris” while introducing As It Was. Harry and Taylor have referenced Paris many times as special to them.

31 July 2022 - Lisbon - start of Kiwi (12:49)

1 August 2022 - Toronto - cinema - kissed the eagle covering ‘things I can’ after “it’s you, and I’m not getting over it” previous kisses have been after break ups indicating wanting to change something

10 September 2022- Madison Square Garden Night 12, LOML. Harry and Taylor were both in NY, Harry started a 5 week stint of wearing the Peace Ring. Neither Harry & Olivia or Taylor & Joe seemed friendly, with both break ups announced in coming months.

27 October 2022 - LA - introducing WMYB (day music for a sushi restaurant dropped and 1989 anniversary). Taylor was on the Graham Norton show talking about the re-records and announcing the Eras tour.

13 June 2023 - Wembley - kissed other arm (0:06) during Grapejuice and kissed the Heart Tattoo during As It Was after “...and I’m the one who will stay” (0:41) The day before Taylor played All You Had to Do was Stay as a Surprise Song on the 10th June. Harry played Best Song Ever intro to WMYB.

17 June 2023 - Wembley - at the end of Sweet Creature Harry went to kiss the tattoo and stopped himself then looked at the crowd with a cheeky embarrassed look. (3:16). Gemma had a baby 8 months later. Taylor had a particularly emotional show that night. She gave an extra wild Champagne Problems speech and extra long and weird Betty Speech and had Aaron Dessner out to play Seven and hugs Taylor at the end. Later a photo of TR sitting with Jeff in one of the Wembley crowds surfaced months later. Interestingly, this is the anniversary of Taylors 2011 Lover Journal entry days after Harry was MIA in the US when Taylor had the Temper Trap arm lyrics in St Paul.

18 June 2023 - Wembley link Wembley n1 during as it was another link. I think the show above sums this up. Cruel Summer was officially released as a single 2 days later.

Even when you managed to fall asleep, you were plagued by nightmares of Bella. Bloodless faces of newborns tear your pack limb from limb. All felt lost.

The following morning you awoke with dread in your chest that weighed you down into your mattress. Tomorrow was the day. So many lives were on the line and you were now allowing it to sink into you. If you all failed. . . The people of Forks and La Push would be in imminent danger and there would be no one to protect them. It would be a free for all for the newborn army, hungry after a battle.

Your parents and your friends could all be dead by the end of tomorrow. Now your side had lost the element of surprise by having Bella’s scent. Everyone was waiting for a surprise attack from Victoria.

“(Y/n)? Are you still in bed?” Your mom tentatively knocks on your door. Normally if they know you’ve been out on patrol, your parents will allow you to sleep in. Lately they could sense your anxiety and checked in on you frequently.

You roll yourself up, rubbing the heel of your palm against your eyes. Only able to get about three hours worth of sleep, you were not prepared to go out into the world. “Yes. But I’ve been awake for a while.”

The door opens and your mom’s concerned face pokes in. “Breakfast is ready. Why don’t you come out and eat with us.”

Nodding you start to slip out of bed, eyes still closed and struggling to flutter open. Once you finally do manage to wake up a bit and head toward your bedroom door, your mom gently stops you; putting her left hand against your cheek where the scab had been long gone. Now there was a dark scar that plagued your complexion.

So easy was it to read how your mom was feeling. Her eyes had always been so expressive. Now you read the deep worry that plagued her thoughts when she looked upon your face. Knowing that it was your fault made your chest throb uncomfortably. “Why don’t you call Sam and tell him to let you have the day off. You can use the rest.”

You would love nothing more than to do just that. But you couldn’t. Not now. Your pack needed everyone in attendance. “I can’t, ma.” She presses her lips together yet yields and bows her head lightly. “(Y/n), you don’t have to do this. You know that right? No matter what everyone else says, it’s your choice. Don’t put yourself in danger because you think you have to.”

A little laugh escapes you. “Ma. . . Thanks for saying that, but I don’t really have a choice. Not really. What else would I do with this gift?” Gift, you called it. But it felt more like a curse. It’s made you do things that you would have never done had you been just a normal human. Originally you had thought turning into a wolf was the coolest thing in the world. Come to learn that there was so many strings attached to it. Now it was ruining your life.

Closing her eyes, your mom gathers you into her arms. “I want you to be happy and safe, (y/n).”

If she only knew the extent of your duties. Lately you had neither been happy nor safe. Tomorrow you might not even be alive.

Negative thoughts swirled in your head like a snow globe. Knowing that you could die very soon made you cling to your mother in comfort. At least you were safe in her arms for a few moments.

You finished your breakfast just in time to catch the ring of your front door. Your dad had already been getting up to clear the table, but at the announcement of a guest he puts down the plates and hurries over.

“Afternoon Mr. (l/n).” Embry’s voice rang clear and it makes you rise and stride over to where your father stood.

“Hello Embry.” Managing an awkward smile, your dad glances at you for a moment. “That time, huh?”

“I didn’t get a call from Sam or anyone else in the pack.”

“They’re all out at the Cullen border.” Embry quietly informs you, unsure of how much to share while your dad was present. “Charlie is with them.”

You were great up that you at least had been giv en enough time to finish your.breakfast before throwing yourself back into the dangerous world of vampires and wolves. Giving your dad a brief side hug and saying goodbye to your mom, you head out with Embry.

No words had been spoken between the two of you since Edward’s phone call yesterday. Even passing the crest of the forest that lined your home, Embry remained quiet.

And when he did speak, it wasn’t about the hurt he had felt seeing you so enamored by Edward’s voice. “Charlie showed up at Billy’s a little while ago. He insists that he has a hand in the plan to save his daughter.”

“He definitely can’t join the actual fighting. The best thing he could do for us is make sure no human is around this area tomorrow.” Quietly musing, you hop over a large tree root that you used to make forts in. If you were missing, your parents always searched there first.

Embry nods. “Yeah, that’s what Sam said. But that doesn’t mean he can’t know about the plan. He just can’t participate physically.”

“So why are they at the Cullen border?”

“Best to have everyone present. Especially now since Charlie is involved. The Cullens can better explain the history leading up to Bella’s kidnapping. They have much to explain about all of Bella’s previous injuries.” When you found yourselves into the heart of the forest, both of you turn around and start to strip before changing into your wolf skin.

Once inside of your wolf, you hear the voices of your other pack members. The louder their voices grew in your head, the closer you grew to your destination. Even before then you smelled Edward’s scent. The one you try to retain each time. Vainly attempting to remember it while you went to sleep.

”Looks like (y/n) and Embry are finally here.” You heard Leah sneer.

Of course she couldn’t be nice for once. Not even when a startled Charlie accidentally bumps into her at the sight of you and Embry’s wolf forms. Recognition crosses his eyes when he takes a good look in your direction.

“You’re the one that saved me.” He acknowledges you.

Your tail sways cordially and you nod your head.

“That’s (y/n).” Carlisle smiles.

“And which one is Jacob?”

A deep russet wolf walks forward, meeting Charlie’s gaze. Cautiously, Charlie holds out his hand in front of him.

“That’s really you, Jake?”

Jacob bumps Charlie’s hand with his nose. ”Yeah, it’s me Charlie. I promise we’ll get Bella back.”

“He says that we’ll get Bella back.” Edward translates for everyone else who couldn’t hear what Jacob was thinking.

Charlie pats Jacob’s muzzle. “I know.”

You noticed how warm Charlie was toward Jacob, having his back turned to Edward and nearly treating him as if he weren’t there. Perhaps because the truth was out and Edward had failed to protect Bella from a supernatural foe that not even Charlie could deal with. He had entrusted his daughter to him. Charlie couldn’t fight this foe himself which must have frustrated the mortal man to no end.

Sympathy for Edward arose in your conscience. For such a powerful man, he looked helpless being ignored by Charlie. Bella’s kidnapping distressed him greatly; perhaps more than Charlie. For Edward did consider himself guilty. He wasn’t there to protect her. In fact, some may argue that he had brought all this danger to her because he was a vampire. If he had been normal, Bella would not have had to know this kind of world. A world where creatures drank blood to survive.

“Chief Swan.” Carlisle pulls his attention back to why they were all gathered. Human, wolf, and vampire alike. While the treaty rules were still up, at least all three of you could still manage to unite at least for Bella’s sake. Bella connected all three worlds to each other. “The confrontation with Victoria’s newborn army will be upon us tomorrow. Alice can still confirm that much. But Bella’s role in it has not been seen. We don’t know what Victoria plans for Bella.”

“Obviously nothing good.” If Jacob had his human face, you knew he’d have it scrunched up, like he thought Carlisle an idiot.

Thankfully Edward didn’t translate Jacob’s internal musing.

Charlie puts his hands in his pant pocket, perhaps out of a nervous fashion. “So you guys plan on fighting them while luring this Victoria away?”

“That was our original plan. We were going to use Bella’s scent to lure her in but now they might have the same idea.”

“Does she know about the wolves?”

“Yes. A while ago the wolves and Victoria crossed paths. But I don’t think she knows of us working together.” Carlisle admits.

Emmett, who had been unusually quiet, scoffed and narrowed his eyes at your side. “She probably thinks we’re enemies thanks to that big guy crashing into me.”

Paul snaps his jaws in Emmett’s direction. ”That leech was the one who got in my way!”

Sending Paul a silencing growl, Sam reprimands him. ”Stop acting like a child. Put aside your petty grievances.”

Having heard that prompted a small smile from Edward. Sam was giving him a little more respect since saving him.

“And Alice. . . ?” There was a tone of hopefulness in Charlie’s voice. Alice regretted shaking her head in reply.

“I can’t force my visions. They come at random. I’m sorry Charlie. . .” Alice bit her lip and darted her eyes away, unable to look at him anymore.

The man managed to maintain his calm composure although you did detect the reddening of his eyes. He didn’t let his emotions sway his actions. Something no one in your pack would be able to successfully achieve. Intense emotions sparked the wolf in you and made you do many things you would regret. The chances of saving Bella before the fight was unlikely.

Sam told the younger wolves (including yourself) to get some rest for tomorrow. He and the other seasoned pack members would be doing the patrol. How could anyone sleep with doom being held over your head? Nothing had comforted you in the conversation with Charlie. At least he would do his part in keeping any human away from the battlefield. That much he was able to do.

While Emily forced Seth to head home, you and your trio of boys go in the other direction where your homes waited. All four of you were quiet and contemplative. Quil, Jacob, and Embry hung out in the back. You noted that it had been a while since all three of them had been together. Ever since becoming part of Sam’s pack, there was a derisive split between them which saddened you. In your childhood, they had always been seen together like the Three Stooges. They were iconic among La Push. Now they were splintered.

Your parents were surprised that you were home so early, despite it only being fifteen after four in the afternoon. They were used to you coming home late at night or early in the morning.

“Is everything okay?” Your dad asks, double checking the hands on his watch. He must have just come home for work as he was now in his house slippers.

Looking at your dad, you force a small smile on your face to make his worried look disappear. “Yeah.” Once you’re safely inside of your bedroom, you sit on the floor and stare into space. Unconsciously your fingertips run along the scar on your face, your mind replaying the image of Xiomara’s contorted face and black eyes. You had been able to see your own terrified face staring back at you through her glossy eyes.

Thinking back on it always made your body begin to shake as you relive the horror. Seeing the dead body of the witch who was supposed to help you. The sounds that emitted from Xiomara’s twisted mouth as it morphed into a beak.

A cold sweat buds on your skin and you feel sick as you shut your eyes. But you could still see her. You were alive and she was dead, but Xiomara’s monstrous features never left you.

Bella came to mind suddenly.

She must be feeling the same terror. Believing that she was about to die at the hands of a hideous monster. Alone.

Like a reflex, you were on your feet and hand on the doorknob. Your heart raced. You couldn’t leave Bella like that. To wait and wonder all while suffering torment from the vampires. Feeling like a helpless child.

“Oh no.” You breathed, unable to remove your hand from the knob. “I’m about to do something stupid.” Hadn’t you learned from last night not to act hastily. But imagining Bella by herself killed you more than you thought it would. Shouldn’t you be taking this time to rejoice that they might kill her? Then you would have Edward all to yourself. You weren’t that kind of person, no matter how much you wanted not to care about her. “I’m about to do something stupid. . . I’m sorry Sam.”

Alice doubled over where she stood, her hands clamping down on either side of her head as she suppressed a cry. Jasper was at her side in seconds, helping her to sit down until it passed. She could even hear the concerned voices of her other family members. Just a piercing pain that struck her head and deafening ringing in her ears. Eyes squeezed shut, streaks like lightening rip through her mind. In them were like slow moving videos. (y/n) appeared to be the star as Alice could see her exiting a thicket of trees to come across a paved highway. She was in her human form and at first looked uncertain until she seems to confirm her actions and continues onward.

Her head pulsated when she struggled to look further, knowing that the only other occasion she had felt like this was when (y/n) was in grave danger. The future wouldn't let her though and soon the ringing in her ears faded out. Drilling in her skull slowly dissipated as well. This vision left her feeling weak, weaker than the last one. Alice was breathing heavily, allowing Jasper to mellow her.

When she opened her eyes, everyone was staring at her; only Edward knowing what was going on. He knew that stretch of highway. He had been there last night. With (y/n). She was going to find Bella by herself. Despite Sam's orders, she was going alone with no one else; taking it upon herself to rescue the girl that was her rival.

"I know where she is." Edward said quickly. He didn't want to waste anytime. This wouldn't be something she could do alone, as noble as it was. She needed help.

With her head in her hands, Alice gazes at Edward. "Hurry. Even if she is in her human form, who knows how far she'll make it before she runs into trouble."

Edward nods and in a flash he's already out the door, crossing the front lawn and into the depths of the woods.
