dehradun days
you meet them for the first time,
knowing it's probably the last.
might as well make the most of this time,
since life comes at you fast.
you find the strangest of signals
in the no-network zones.
cross-tent communication with folks,
just rambling about the unknown.
there's the warmth of shared laughter,
that carries you through freezing nights,
and you look up at the flickering stars,
to finally see things in a different light.
and at 11,000 ft above sea level
you finally reach the peak,
just to realise the joy was in the journey,
and the friends you made that week.
you'll visit caves & splendid cafes,
and remember the city in mere parts,
but years later, you'll still tell everyone,
how dehradun captured your heart.

Old desiblr as a locality post
A day in Desiblr gully
It's 5am and some of them are going to sleep now after having a good screentime duration while posting, "I need to stop being chronically online." Some of the artists are busy decorating their walls with their dream vacation and outfits photos and calling it a moodboard. Their houses look the prettiest because everything is set according to an aesthetic.
It's 7am now. The early risers are posting good morning messages and other teens are getting ready for catching their school vehicles while liveblogging their activities before eating one last morsel of their breakfast. A random 18 year old is getting scolded by his friend to not skip meals again or she will come with a knife. College going peeps are watching all of this silently. Some are glad that they are done with school. No more waking up at 6 and getting ready while some feel nostalgic looking at these kids doing the things they once did.
"Guys aaj meine aloo paratha banayi hai!" A girl posts a photo of makhan maar ke aloo paratha and few others immediately rush inside her house to have her delicious parathe. Someone then says, "yaar mujhe bhi aisi parathe bannani hai."
It's 12pm. The gully is a little silent now. Students preparing for competitive exams are studying. School going kids are busy with school while desperately wanting to rush home to their Desiblr gully and narrate what Mrs A said to their friend or the latest drama in their lives. Some people have saved paintings and poetry quotes to tag their friends who always stand with them and appreciate their work. They never tell them this, but they know that if they make it big in publishing something, a major credit will go to their friends for reading or appreciating their work.
And finally it's 3pm. The sun is high up in the sky. The lanes are filled with chitter chatter of school kids coming back. Some are announcing that they finally proposed their crush while some are busy debating if the said person likes them or not. Their faces are a little tired but their hearts are brimming with enthusiasm. It's good to be home. They eagerly head home and freshen themselves.
'I need to thank didi for sharing those maths tips. Only due to her, I got 97% in maths."
Here everybody eats lunch together. There are tables and mats laid in the common garden. So many dishes belonging to different cuisines prepared by everyone from different states of India is served here. There are sweets and very spicy foods. Some got local desi refreshing drinks to beat the summer while some got their delicious homemade achaar.
Do you hear someone singing? Yeah they are the singers of our neighbourhood. It's a desi mehfil. Some of them have been training in music while some join in to vibe. It's a fun activity nevertheless. The mic is open, you can join in anytime.
It's 5pm. Some of them took an afternoon nap and woke up dazed. A tent is set up. It's a cultural evening today, I think. Wait for it, we may not have the best costumes and stage arrangements but we have got some talented performers. Love lorn poets have got their poems out, the dancers are dancing on movie songs while some choose devotional pieces. Look at her, she sings so well! The crowd is singing with her too. Wait for another hour and you will see some of our amazing photographers and painters with their brilliant artistry.
Now everybody is heading to study and take cars of their other jobs. Some are cleaning their homes (blogs) and painting the walls after they saw a movie and want their house (blog theme) to match the colour scheme. Is there a warm happy feeling in your heart? There is always this feeling in the air here.
Well this small neighbourhood is pretty and chaotic. Sometimes you might feel as if you do not fit in. Everyone looks intimidating. Their are scuffles and fights too at times. But just wait for a while and give time, you will find your own circle too. Be prepared to take care of some absolute unhinged friends too for they be taking some really impulsive decisions.
I think it's 10pm now. Some are having dinner right now with their friends. There is a boy busy completing his assignments after procrastinating the whole day (he made his friends bully him to make him complete it)
Do you know we maybe young, very young but we got hearts and somewhere a little wisdom too. This is the place to be yourself the way you are. You don't need to pretend here. We cry loudly and laugh loudly too. Our friends have seen the best and worst of us yet they choose to stay with us through thick and thin.
It's midnight. Someone announced that they are leaving this place saying, "it's time to move on friends. You all made my life brighter and I am so grateful for each on you." See how every person goes and hugs them. Some have started crying but they all choose to let them go. It's only for the best, they say. 'Just remember us in your memories. We wish you all the best, friend! Goodbye! Our doors will always be open for you if you ever decide to come back.'
It's dawn once again. Someone will come up with a new poem as an aubade to wake up sleepy heads for school. O look, a group of girls are singing devotional songs. It's a beautiful start, isn't it.
This is our colourful little community. Humari Desiblr gully...

hey girl! i hope you're doing well💗
would love some book recommendations from you<33
Hii girl!! I am doing great. Thanks for asking✨
Coming to your question it's kind of difficult to determine which genre you are looking for in recommendations.
I don't read self help books tbh. I am more of a fictional reader and books surrounding the area of my interests like politics, business, etc.
Still I can suggest some classic recs to you and manhuas (If you are into them like me):
1) Gone with the wind (Passionate. That's all)
2) The picture of Dorian Gray (I personally didn't find the story that engaging but it's best for vocabulary building)
3) The Great Gatsby (This one has kind of left me scarred, it's a deep one once you understand it)
4) Wuthering heights (Currently reading it but the pace seems slow in the start)
5) The dead poets society ( I bawled my eyes out for this one. 10/10 recommended)
Manhuas:
1) How to save the female lead's brother( Roxanne the main character is sooo badass. I hope it continues. Speedy recovery to the maker)
2) Beware of the Villainess
3) The Villainess is a Marionette (The art✨✨)
4) The Broken Ring (The emotional rollercoaster is just chef kiss)
5) Noragami (It's a manga but it's my all time favourite)
Non fictional books:
1) The India way
2) Wings of Fire
3) Indian Architecture ( I haven't completed reading this one)
That's all I have to share. Honestly I am a fictional reader at the core. So I hope I was able to suggest something helpful.

Twenty questions that he has to answer.
How is your sleep schedule like? Don't mess with Theodore's. I annoyed him for a year about it and finally he got it right. Tho I am sure he got it right because of someone else. (Aka you) 😏
What are your friends like? Explain in brief. Treat this like a three marks question.
What is your ideal way to spend weekends? Will you take Theodore to museums or not? Will you stay in and cancel your plans if Theodore doesn't feel like going? Without blaming him?
Do you know your love language? Do you know how to convey it? (You don't have to tell me what it is just say yes or no)
What's your favourite thing about dating my best friend? Treat this like a three marks question too.
What are some things you and him have in common?
Will you give all your chocolates to him if he asks?
What's your favourite movie?
Favourite way to relax?
Will you say sorry after an argument even if it wasn't exactly your fault? I believe that saying sorry doesn't mean that you are wrong it just means that you care enough to keep your ego aside and take accountability.
Do you like Spiderman/Percy Jackson? (Very important question)
Hobbies?
Any new hobbies you want to pick up?
Will you read a book just because it is Theodore's favourite?
Favourite poet, if any?
Will you get Theodore roses?
Will you help/ask whether you can help Theodore with his chores without him having to ask you?
Extroverted or introverted?
Most played song on your playlist?
If you could master any instrument than which one?
That's it. I guess. Hope you have a wonderful day, take care of yourself and him. Also, nice to meet you, I am Eleanor. Theodore is my best friend, I am his casual friend. I am from India. Eleanor is not my real name but that is what you can refer to me, for now. Any queries? Message me. Take care of my best friend for me. Give him hugs from my side. Time to time, lots of hugs. Theodore, give him a handshake from my side. Thank you.
passing the phone to him
Shalom!! Eleanor (can I call you Ellie?  Oo or even Elea ~pronounced Ella??~ if not that’s groovy too)
I’m very excited I’ve heard lots about you! All good don’t worry babes)
I try to sleep about seven hours a night but sometimes I sleep 8 but I couldn’t do anything less unless absolutely necessary I physically could not lose a day of beauty rest of it would ruin me
Friends….all pretty diverse actually and there are several different personalities.. I’ll give you my ride or dies so okay we All went to an alternative school not because we had disciplinary problems but because we had different problems that made normal schools challenging. Like I for example have dyslexia and ADD. Anyway my best friends and I sorta bonded over this and I’ve been friends with Elton since grade five and we still keep in touch even now but he decided to go to college and I did not he’s a literal fashion icon and the sweetest smartest cinnamon roll you could meet but if he’s not doing his work you need to get on him because he procrastinates like crazy. So now we only see each other on weekends. Kaleb on the other hand went overseas and we FaceTime every morning except Sundays because of church and she’s really into anime and I can’t tell you much about that stuff except the seven deadly sins is better than demon slayer and bleach is something Kaleb rewatchs every few weeks so you best expect that it’s going to be playing when you visit but my life really doesn’t have interesting drama thank goodness. (No offence starshine👀)
I love to spend my weekends exploring I used to hike a lot but Arc is not a fan of the outdoors though we’ve found he has a knack for gardening and does very good on the family farm he just really doesn’t see the point and I don’t really blame him I suppose it’s not for everyone and I know Arc is more of a moon person. Yes actually we do go to museums and no I wouldn’t ever get mad at him for that we all have our off days
Yes and yes but ours is not the same so it’s good to keep of communication in our relationship so we stay afloat. We really haven’t had any problems though as words of affirmation is something Arc is good at unknowingly because of his poetry addiction and I’ve always been a really touchy person
My favorite thing about dating Arc is his ability to express himself though body language for example we’re at a party I don’t have a ask in front of everyone if he’s tired from all the human interaction he just shows it with expressions or posture..or whatever he chooses to convey but I never have to ask. This can be a problem on the small occasion that I can’t see him because I cannot rely on him to tell me because I usually know.
We’re people pleasers and that’s one of things we sorta bonded over when we first met we feel horrible égéen if the thing wasn’t our problem or responsibility because it made whoever upset. We don’t have very good people skills I’m overbearing and him not enough which has lead a lot of people to sorta stay away unless of course you’re also like us. I’ve found that we both share an appreciation of art mine is more in fashion design and makeup while his is writing and visual sorta stuff
Without hesitation(I’m not a huge fan of chocolate)
Geek charming (I’m not sorry)
Meditation.
Yes because I will feel bad for making him upset though he’s probably right anyway as he’s more logical than me…but one cannot always choose mind over morals so maybe I might be right on the off occasion
Not really l…sorry..but I think wonder woman is cool if that’s the same fandom?
Crocheting, sewing, working out, and I love to sing but I’m not very good at it despite what Arc says but I do want to get into photography
I would if he asked me but I don’t really read them because he likes to tell me about them and I love hearing about them…he also probably wound be very happy at my reading for him because he knows reading is a struggle for me
Oh this is a good one! Probably the Edgar guy I like when Arc recites them especially Anabel Lee
No because he prefers Aster white aster to be exact..
Of course! Most our chores are mutual so we don’t have it set on who does what but if he’s doing something I’d definitely help him finish whatever it is
Extroverted
Teenage dirtbag by weetus I honestly have no Idea how I’m not tied of it yet and a close second is  in this shirt by the irrépressibles which I listen to while designing
Definitely guitar it’s just so pretty but Theodore might get me into piano he plays like a dream
I do Hope your next three days go spectacularly well and this was really fun I definitely might consider this app or the website at the very least thank you.

Punch out boxer's relationships with their mom!
Just a little thing for mother's day that I thought would be fun.
Glass Joe:
Good relationship. They've always been loving but grew closer after he left school. She supports him and his sister no matter what, so long as they're happy she is too. Mom hasn't always been able to protect him when he needed it but he still loves her and forgives her nonetheless.
Even when they disagree, they make an effort to see each other's perspective and find a middle ground. His boxing career really tests the poor woman's heart but she holds her fears back as to not discourage him too much- after all, he is his father's son.
Von Kaiser:
Never really knew her. She died when he was 3, leaving him with only a few fuzzy memories of her. If she were still alive, he likes to think they'd get along. He loved hearing about her from neighbors growing up and ended up thinking of her as a martyr. As an adult, he has a bit more nuance about her as a person, but still holds her on a pedestal.
The closest thing he had to a mother was a neighbor with kids of her own who kept a close eye on Kaiser and his brother and took care of them when she could. She left the city when he was still a child, but he never forgot her kindness.
Disco Kid:
Mother died when he was a baby. He knows nothing of her and tries not to think about her too often to avoid getting sad. When he does think about her, he ends up spiraling in grief about how much he's lost- his parents, his mom's culture, most of his family, even his name.
Has a mother figure in an old butch lady who runs a music shop not far from where he lives. She encouraged his musical interest and also introduced him to boxing as self defense. She's glad she could get him as far as he is now as his coach and proud of the effort he puts in as a boxer.
King Hippo:
Him and his mom were close when he was a kid but grew distant when he left the island to be a boxer. She didn't approve of his career, thinking he'd be better off taking in his father's job as a local storyteller and poet.
When his dad died, they reconciled and have returned to a close relationship. His mother still isn't a fan of his job, but understands that it's what her son wants to do with his life and how proud her husband was of Hippo's choice.
Piston Hondo:
Loves his mom... but whenever they spend time with each other she gets on his nerves. He knows she means well but hates how hard she is about his accomplishments. A part of him is scared that if he asserts himself, she'll disown him so he hasn't said anything about it. She's also pretty tough on his love life, always asking if he has a girlfriend and pointing out how he needs to get married and have kids like his sister.
Still, he can't help loving her for encouraging his preference for sports and convincing his dad to lay off academics. For her part, she does love him, but just wants him to be better (She's bitter about all the cheaters above him in rank)
Bear Hugger:
Great relationship! They spend as much time together as possible and get along very well. Their relationship is quite friendly and has only gotten better as he's gotten older. They like to make fun of each other and do woodworking projects.
The only major hiccup in their relationship was her initial wariness of his wife since she was 'city folk'. Bear put his foot down very quickly and she hasn't complained since. She's proud of his boxing career, but always teases him about being 'turned into an American/New Yorker'.
Great Tiger:
His mom is overprotective but he's long since accepted it as just her personality. He used to dislike her because of it but as an adult he sees things from her perspective much better and accepts her as she is. The best part is that he still gets a bunch of help with basic life stuff like laundry, cooking, and cleaning whenever he stays in India with his parents, which leaves him with a bunch more free time.
As a show of thanks, he pays for a lot of spa stuff for her and often joins the shorter trips. His mom wasn't too miffed about him using magic in the ring and finds it hilarious, unlike his dad. She's mostly happy he just found a job that's stable and that he likes, even if it's violent as hell.
Don Flamenco:
Loves his mom but they definitely have their disagreements. They butt heads quite a bit sometimes playfully, sometimes not. The big thing between them is his desire to marry Carmen.
She doesn't disapprove of Carmen as a person, but she doesn't like the idea of him marrying before 29- she got married young and wants her kids to enjoy their 20s. She also wishes he was more religious and doesn't approve of his flirtiness overall. She wasn't as bummed by his boxing career as his dad, but it still took her some time to come around to it.
Aran Ryan:
Gets along great with his mom! There was a dip in their relationship in his late teens/early 20s, but they've always loved each other a lot. Tons of playful ribbing and teasing between these two as well as a lot of open affection.
They're close enough that Aran often goes to her when he feels shitty about himself- she always knows what he needs to hear. Aran would definitely spoil her with nice things if she let him. She's very proud that he's made a name for himself as a boxer, even if he cheats (Pretty much everyone else does, so why the hell not?).
Soda Popinski:
Momma's boy. His mom is very honest with him and he adores her- to the point where she can do no wrong in his eyes (even when she is wrong). She doesn't actually care about what he chooses to do with his life, so long as he isn't malicious. Very supportive and protective of each other.
Fights with his sister if she points out any wrongdoing on their mom's part. She's proud of his career as a boxer, but much less so of his forced involvement with the Russian government or his doping to win.
Bald Bull:
So many mommy issues. Genuinely struggles to love his mom because of how bad she did at raising him/protecting him growing up. They disagree on so much it isn't even funny. There's always a lot of tension when they're in the same room. He feels like she's disappointed in him for his career choice (she is) and even hates him for how he's grown to react to the paparazzi (she does).
Still, there are moments where things are fine, almost even loving, between them. It made Bull hopeful for years that maybe his mom would become more tolerable or even work on herself but that has yet to happen. Nowadays, he avoids her if he can.
Super Macho Man:
Loves his mom to death. He isn't as close to her as his dad, but he likes spending time with her. They don't have as many shared interests as him and his dad but fish and swimming are big ones. She worries over his mental/physical health and, even if he never says it, he really appreciates her concern. Definitely close enough to rib on each other.
She's one of the few people he allows to touch his hair or drive him around. Always gives her big gifts and joins her to fancy parties when he can. She doesn't get his focus on boxing especially since he's safer pursuing one of his many other sporty interests, but at least appreciates that he isn't 100% devoted to modeling.
Mr. Sandman:
Loves his mom, but doesn't get along with her sometimes. They've had a lot of ups and downs, but they've both mellowed out as he's grown up. Their relationship was at its worst when he was a teenager. Every time they fight, they end up making up by the end of the week. They struggle to see each other's perspective and respect each other sometimes, but they always know that it's going to be okay between them.
Even with their problems, his mom is proud of her boy for having become and still trying to be a better person than he once was. Though she wishes he worked closer to home, she is very proud of his boxing career and how he doesn't let the fame get to his head.
Little Mac:
Never knew his mom. She died when he was an infant and he never had a mother figure under Doc's care. He doesn't mind that he never had a mother figure, or even a very prominent female one, but still wonders who his birth mother was. It makes him sad to have never known her but tries not to dwell on it.

This is my self-love altar. It's really small, but now I'm using one table for both studies and everything else, so I made this small and on a tray instead. It's really simple to make!
Things on my altar:
3 tealight candles - 2 pink and 1 white. I would rather put 1 white, 1 pink, and 1 red candle but honestly, it doesn't matter as long as the intention is there. The bad thing about tealights is that they don't last for so long, so I'm only going to light them when I say my affirmations.
1 sigil - I got the idea from Pinterest. I like how it turned out.
4 shells - these are also associated with love. I don't work with deities, but for those who do, shells are connected to Aphrodite. Water is generally connected to emotions, and I added them because my zodiac sign (both sun and moon) is Cancer ♋.
1 moonstone - also can be associated with my sign, and the moon, and intuitive abilities. I don't have a rose quartz but this is also associated with love sometimes. It's best to put a crystal that you like, and it doesn't always have to be associated with love.
4 jasmine flowers - also can be used if you don't have roses. There's a jasmine plant in my garden, and I pick the flowers from there. I also personally like it as it works well for intuition. Jasmine is also a popular flower in Kerala (my state, in India) so there's the cultural aspect of it too.
1 love poem - from the poet Rumi. The poem I chose is 'The Beauty of the Heart'. I read it when I'm working with my altar.
1 bracelet - which I enchanted. It was a gift to me from my dad, and I wear it whenever I go outside. It's also got diamonds, which are also associated with love.
1 lip balm - I enchanted this too with some intentions
1 mirror - because the only person that matters the most in your life is you! I look into it every day to say my affirmations.
The affirmations I use:
I am beautiful, inside and out.
I love myself, and so I attract love.

There is no one like him, or ever will be. Wishing the Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan a very Happy Birthday (11/10).
Amitabh Bachchan, born Amitabh Shrivastav on 11 October 1942, is a renowned Indian actor, producer, TV host, singer, and former politician.
With a film career spanning over 50 years, he has appeared in over 200 Hindi films. He's celebrated as one of Indian cinema's most influential figures, earning titles such as the "Shahenshah of Bollywood" and "Star of the Millennium." His cinematic dominance in the 1970s and 80s led French director François Truffaut to label him a "one-man industry."
Born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in 1942, Bachchan is the son of the famed Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. He studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. His cinematic journey began in 1969, narrating for the film Bhuvan Shome. By the 1970s, roles in films like Anand, Zanjeer, and Sholay solidified his reputation as India's "angry young man." His notable films from the 70s and 80s include Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, and Shakti. After a hiatus in the 1990s, he returned to prominence in the 2000s with films like Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Piku. In Piku, he earned his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor, a record achievement. He also featured in the Hollywood film, The Great Gatsby (2013).
Throughout his career, Bachchan has received numerous awards, including four National Film Awards for Best Actor and sixteen Filmfare Awards. Recognizing his contribution to the arts, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri (1984), Padma Bhushan (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2015), and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018). France also honored him with its highest civilian award, Knight of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
Apart from acting, Bachchan has been a playback singer, producer, and TV presenter. He hosted multiple seasons of India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" titled "Kaun Banega Crorepati." He briefly entered politics in the 1980s and is recognized for his humanitarian efforts. Beyond India, Bachchan has a significant international following, especially in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and the UK. He was voted the "greatest star of stage or screen" in a 1999 BBC poll and was dubbed the "Star of the Millennium" by TIME magazine in 2003.

At the point where the Assi River and the Ganges meet in the southernmost point of the city is Assi Ghat Varanasi. This ghat has great religious significance because it is thought that the Ramcharitmanas was written by the legendary poet Tulsidas there. From sunrise till sunset, pilgrims are taking holy dips, carrying out rituals, and asking for blessings at the ghat, which is a hive of activity. Assi Ghat is a popular destination for both locals and visitors because of its tranquil the environment, which provides the ideal setting for contemplation and meditation.
The Sacred Banaras Assi Ghat Aarti
Every day, the mesmerizing Aarti ritual at Banaras Assi Ghat attracts hundreds of devotees and visitors. Two times a day, at sunrise and sunset, the devotional song known as the Aarti is performed, followed by the waving of lit lamps. Usually, the evening Aarti starts at 6:30 PM, while the morning Aarti starts at approximately 5:00 AM. But depending on the season, these times may change somewhat. Getting there early guarantees you a prime location to take in the memorable event.
Priests dressed in traditional garb sing songs and prayers during the Aarti, creating a sacred and peaceful atmosphere. The experience is dreamlike due to the timing of the rhythmic chants, the scent of candles, and the sight of the flickering lighting on the river. This ceremony is a must-attend event for anybody visiting Varanasi, as it represents the purifying of the mind and soul.
Exploring Kashi Vishwanath Mandir
No visit to Varanasi is complete without paying homage to the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, one of the most sacred temples in Hinduism. Located just a short distance from Assi Ghat, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the city. The Kashi Vishwanath Mandir stands as a beacon of faith and devotion, attracting millions of pilgrims from across the globe.
The temple's history dates back to ancient times, with numerous reconstructions and renovations over the centuries. The current structure, built in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, features a magnificent gold-plated spire, earning it the nickname "Golden Temple." The temple complex houses several smaller shrines dedicated to various deities, making it a hub of religious activities.
Visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir requires adhering to certain protocols. Devotees are required to dress modestly and undergo a security check before entering the premises. The temple is open from 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with specific hours allocated for different rituals. Participating in the Mangala Aarti, which takes place early in the morning, is considered highly auspicious. It's advisable to check the official website or contact the temple administration for the latest timings and guidelines.
How to Reach Assi Ghat and Kashi Vishwanath Mandir
Varanasi is well-connected by air, rail, and road, making it accessible from major cities in India. The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is about 25 kilometers from the city center, with regular flights to and from major Indian cities. Varanasi Junction and Manduadih Railway Station are the primary railway hubs, connecting Varanasi to various parts of the country.
Once in Varanasi, you can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or cycle-rickshaw to reach Assi Ghat and Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. The city's narrow lanes can be a bit challenging to navigate, so it's often best to explore on foot or by cycle-rickshaw for an authentic experience. Many local guides offer walking tours that cover major ghats and temples, providing deeper insights into the city's spiritual and cultural heritage.

'Luxury Foods' in Medieval Islamic Societies by David Waines from World Archaeology, Vol. 34, No. 3, Luxury Foods (Feb., 2003)
"We may begin with the work entitled The Meadows of Gold written by the famous historian al-Mas'udi (d. AD 956). He was born in Baghdad and died in Cairo, having, in between, travelled widely in Persia and India in addition to Iraq, Palestine and Syria. The Meadows of Gold contains a number of anecdotes related to food. One involves the Abbasid Caliph, Harun al-Rashid (d. AD 809), of 1001 Arabian Nights fame. He was invited to dine by his brother Ibrahim b. al-Mahdi (d. AD 853), a noted poet and culinary expert, of whom more later.
Harun was served a dish of what appeared to be small and delicate slices of fish arranged in the shape of a fish. When informed that the dish was made from more than 150 fish tongues, the Caliph demanded to know its price and commanded that an equivalent of 1000 silver dirhams be distributed to the poor. This was in expiation, he said, for his brother's wastefulness. Moreover, he ordered a servant to take the fish on its plate, itself an expensive item worth five times as much as the fish preparation, and give it to the first beggar he met in the street.
A second anecdote involves another Caliph, al-Mutawakkil (d. AD 861), who was relaxing one day with his courtiers and singers beside one of the many canals that traversed Baghdad. He smelled the aroma of cooking drifting from a pot being prepared by a sailor on his boat. The Caliph ordered the pot - a beef sikbaj, a sweet and sour stew dish, brought immediately to him. The Caliph sampled the stew with a piece of bread, as did his courtiers and singers, until the pot was empty. He then ordered the pot filled with 2000 dirhams and returned to the boat; the coins that did not fit into the pot were placed in a pouch and given directly to the cook. In the Caliph's judgement the dish was the best sikbaj he had ever tasted."
I found this excerpt incredibly lovely and highly recommend you check out the whole thing on JSTOR (free to access when you make an account but also on scihub). Doing a short article review on it for my Global Connections module - covering Islamic history briefly has really touched me especially when I covered it quite begrudgingly as a child/pre-teen through Saturday-Sunday school. It was always a tug of war with my mother to make me go until at 16 I finally just refused outright and there was nothing she could do. Admittedly out of all the classes taught at the mosque Tahrikh and Seerah always engaged me. I'm glad I can revisit it with a warm heart and with no expectation to be something I'm not so I can love share and appreciate it with fresh eyes.

May 16th 1805 saw the birth of Scottish Explorer, military officer, and diplomat Alexander Burnes.
Born in Montrose, the fourth Son of James Burnes the local provost, who was first cousin to the poet Robert Burns. His brother was James Burnes  At the age of sixteen, Alexander joined the army of the East India Company and while serving in India, he learned Urdu and Persian, and obtained an appointment as interpreter at Surat in 1822.
Burnes was an adventurer at the age of only 26, he made two dangerous journeys beyond the frontiers of the Indian Empire, and brought back descriptions of Sind, Afghanistan and the Khanates of Central Asia including the hithertoe inaccessible Bokhara. He travelled simply with an ear for languages, which he combined with a boyish charm, insatiable curiosity and irrepressible enthusiasm. His travels was a best-seller in its day, and Travels into Bokhara is still readily available online from multiple sources. He has been described as a Victorian James Bond, he was also a dab hand as an artist as one of the pics shows. He was known as Sekundar or Sikandar, the Pashto version of Alexander.
His ancestor was Robert Burns, and it is said he did our Bard proud with his warm humanity, complete lack of racism, and Scottish enlightenment attitudes, his contributions to geology, archaeology and palaeontology, further showed Alexander’s intellectual range. Like Burns he was said to fond of the Ladies, this may have contributed to his downfall.
Alexander Burnes was one of the first agents to be sent to Afghanistan by British Intelligence in 1831 as tensions rose between Britain and Russia over ownership of India. He travelled in disguise, and while journeying 1,000 miles up the Indus river, Burnes was involved in double-crossing deals, secret mapping and espionage.
Burnes would be disguised as a traveller but counted his paces as he went in order to map these were drawn secretly at night in his tent. They would then be crushed down in amulets to be smuggled out and sent back by messengers who were themselves travelling in disguise.
There was lots of double dealing - intercepting letters from the Russians, the use of complex codes to foil the other side. All of the histories repeat claims that it was his active sex life with Afghan women which motivated the Afghan uprising…but no real evidence has been found of this.
Afghanistan has always been a dangerous place for westerners and on November 2nd, a mob gathered in front of his house. It might have played a role that Sekundar Burnes allegedly took a few liberties too many with the female population of Kabul, but the crowd set fire to the gates, tried to get in, Burnes and his staff defended valiantly, he slew 6 assailants with pistol and sword, was finally granted safe conduct to the British cantonment, left the house with his brother Charles and his assistant Lt William Broadfoot disguised as Afghans along with the servants, was recognised and literally cut to pieces by the mob in the streets, his brother was also killed.
Pics are of Burnes in two of his guises he used to blend in, the second is his drawing of the Buddhas of Bamiyan, said to date back to the 5th century AD and were once the tallest standing Buddhas in the world, the Taliban blew them to smithereens in 2001.
