惡魔聖經

惡魔聖經的名字Codex Gigas，意為巨大的書，是目前現存最大的中世紀手抄本，92x50公分，厚22公分，重72公斤，需要兩個人才能搬起這本巨書。

而惡魔聖經這個名字，則來自於它的傳說：有一名修道院的修士，因為犯了戒律即將被處以活人圍牆之刑，這是一種將活人用磚瓦密封住，活活將犯人餓死或窒息而死的刑罰。

修士為了逃避罪罰，提出要用一個晚上寫一本囊括了所有人類知識的書籍作為交換。但時間到了半夜，修士認識到這是一項不可能的任務，因此向惡魔祈禱，交出了自己的靈魂換取到這一本惡魔聖經，而修士在聖經上畫下了惡魔的肖像，以感謝惡魔的幫助。

但修士並沒有因為這本聖經而逃過一死，隨著惡魔那一頁漸漸如燒焦一般黑化，修士也迎來同樣的命運。

當然你我都知道事實並非如此。

惡魔之書？

這本書是出自犯罪修士的說法，出自於對署名Hermann Inclusus的誤解。當然這本聖經也並非歌頌惡魔，內容包含《新約》、《舊約》、塞維爾大主教聖伊西多爾所著百科全書《詞源》、《猶太古史》、《波希米亞編年史》，以及其他咒語、驅魔儀式、修道士名單和亡者錄的曆書等等。

也許是那巨大的整頁惡魔插圖增添了邪惡的色彩，不過其實惡魔的對面一頁也畫了整頁的天堂呢！

詛咒黑化？

而黑化其實也不僅限於惡魔那一面，其實天堂那一面也是有變黑的，實際上是因為這面插畫最常公開展示，長久以來受到光照和環境影響導致羊皮紙黑化，並非什麼超自然現象。

一夜完成？

至於一夜完成的傳說，是因為這本抄本內容非常巨量，若不考慮佚失的部分，頁數高達320個跨頁。關於惡魔聖經要���多少時間完成，��專家說法不一，從五年到二十年的理論都有。

而惡魔聖經另一個精妙的地方，就在於這麼多年字跡居然從頭到尾都居然都一樣，因此有了「惡魔一夜完成」的傳說出現。

內容如此龐大的書，字跡能這麼一致當然相當不凡，但說是惡魔完成的也真是太小看中世紀的藝術家和抄寫員了！ 實際上，整本書字跡保持高度一致也不是沒有其他的例子：

▼舉女王克勞德法蘭西的時禱書(Prayer Book of Claude de France)為例，下面兩頁分別是書的前期和後期的內容，字跡也是高度一致

和巨大的惡魔聖經相比，女王克勞德法蘭西的時禱書可以說非常的袖珍可愛！ 僅僅只有4.9x6.9公分！ 熱愛藝術的克勞德·德·法蘭西在1517年加冕時，希望能收到一本袖珍時禱書作為禮物，這本書因此得名。

當然惡魔聖經的字數和抄寫的工整程度，使它成為了抄本中的精品，也讓惡魔的傳說更精彩。

最小的中世紀手抄本

補充一個小知識，世界上最大的中世紀手抄本是惡魔聖經，最小的並不是上面分享的女王克勞德法蘭西的時禱書，而是下面這本科隆瑪尼法典(Cologne Mani-Codex)。

科隆瑪尼法典成書約在公元五世紀，一頁尺寸就和火柴盒一樣迷你，只有4.5x3.8 cm。 這本法典不是基督教典籍，而是摩尼教 (傳入中國後稱為明教)，目前大部分摩尼教的典籍都已佚失，這本科隆瑪尼法典內容由希臘文寫成，大概講的是創教人摩尼的生平和教誨。
