Hey guys! I’m back! After seeing how popular this series became I knew I had to shift my focus to it! I hope you guys enjoy Part 3

You woke up the next morning, and everything went the way it usually did. Alfred knocked on your door to announce breakfast, Tim walked right past by you in the hall, and the rest of your siblings made plans you would never be invited to. You finished up breakfast quickly, thanked Alfred for the delicious food, gave him a quick peck on the cheek, and then were on your way.

Instead of taking the limo to school with Tim and Damian, you preferred the less stressful option of riding your bike to Gotham Academy. You hadn’t really cared much about going to school with Tim, but now that Damian was about to enroll as a freshman a part of you wished you had gone to school in Metropolis. Damian was a difficult person to deal with on the best of days, since his status as Bruce Wayne’s only legitimate son gave him more than a big ego. But the truth was you really just didn’t want another Wayne brother to have to compete with. At least if you had gone to school in Metropolis you would have been closer to your best friend Kara.

Kara and you had become fast friends when you first moved into the manor. She would tag along with her cousin, Clark Kent, who had a close relationship with your father despite living in a different city and having very different occupations. According to Kara since you were the same age it was a sign you two were meant to be best friends. While you didn’t really believe in things like “signs” you were glad to have Kara in your life. She was kind, funny, strong, but most importantly she saw you. It didn’t matter to her that you weren’t a prodigy like your brothers. She loved you for you, and that meant the world.

You sighed before chaining up your bike outside of the school. ‘What’s done is done’ you thought as you approached the large marble building of your school. Even if you didn’t like going to school with Damian, there wasn’t anything to be done about it. After his elementary school graduation Damian would be attending Gotham Academy whether you liked it or not.

As you entered the school building you noticed a large group of students crowded around the announcement board. You tried to catch a glimpse of what they were looking at, but there were too many people in the way. Eventually you found your friend Olive in the crowd and asked her what was happening.

“You haven’t heard (y/n)?” She pulled you to the side of the crowd whether there was a small gap just wide enough to see the poster that had caught everyone’s attention.

“Your father is coming to give a speech about running a successful corporation”

You whipped your head around in shock. Olive continued talking, but all you heard was static. Your mouth felt like cotton, your ears started ringing. You were about to start spiraling, but before you could you felt a hand clamp down on your shoulder. You turned around and saw Olive looking at you with worry.

“Are you okay, (y/n)? Maybe you should sit down? Come on, just a few classes before lunch with Kyle and I”

She guided you away from the crowd and the board so that you could calm down.

“Homeroom is about to start (y/n). Why don’t we head to class?”

You nodded mutely, but your mind was still on your father. You may not fight for his attention anymore, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t affect you. You knew that as soon as the event was over everyone would be swarming you and Tim for info about your father. While Tim may not like being pestered with questions at least he wouldn’t have to reopen all those wounds of neglect you would.

Eventually you must have reached your homeroom because Olive started to waving at her boyfriend Kyle and pulled the two of you over to where he sat. Kyle smiled warmly at you and her before gesturing to the seats around him.

“Don’t leave a poor boy alone guys”

Olive laughed before putting her bag down and sitting next to him. The three of you were desk mates with Kyle sitting closest to the window, Olive in the middle, and you in the isle. Seeing that they were waiting for you to join them you shook your head free of the negative thoughts that filled your head

Eventually the three of you settled into a light conversation over one thing or another, and before you knew it the class had started. You were grateful to have Biology as your homeroom since it is one of your best subjects. When you first moved to Gotham you had wanted to be a Doctor like the men and women who took care of your mother before she passed. While you didn’t want to be a Doctor anymore, you were still reaping the rewards of study from your childhood dream.

The class came to an end, and after that the rest of the day went by in a haze. By the time you realized it you were on your way back to the Biology Lab for second homeroom. You had left your book bag open by accident, and a girl pushed by you knocking all of your school supplies out in the process. She threw out a half hearted apology and a tight smile before rushing by. You decided not to let it bother you, even though there were very few students in the hallway the hall is very narrow which made it difficult for you to pick up your things without getting in someone’s way.

Eventually you decided to wait for your classmates to trickle out of the hall before grabbing your things. When you were almost finished picking up your things you heard some footsteps approaching the hallways. You looked up and saw the Dean of Gotham Academy turn into the hallway while talking to none other than Harvey Dent. You were incredibly surprised to see him again so quickly after the party. While you were staring the Dean finally became aware of your presence and moved to introduce you to him, but before she could Harvey stepped forward and held out his hand

“Ms. Wayne, it’s a pleasure to see you again after the gala”

You laughed awkwardly before accepting his hand and giving it a shake.

“It’s nice to see you again to Mr. Dent”

The Dean noticed your familiarity with Harvey Dent and started going on and on about your accomplishments at the school.

‘She’s probably looking for a donation’ you wryly thought.

The whole time Dent just nodded his head and listened with what seemed like rapt attention. Eventually the two started to wrap up their conversation. Once again Harvey turned to you, and started to chat

“I don’t want to seem pushy, but it really would be nice to have you work with me. Have you given my offer any thought?”

You bit your lip and fidgeted awkwardly before finding some inner courage and saying

“I want to take you up on your offer please!”

Dent gave you a million dollar smile, shook your hand, and said

“Congratulations, kid. You’re my newest intern! You start Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Don’t be late!”

Oliver as a Dad

I feel like if there was ever a more patient and nurturing man, it would be Oliver. As a father, that shines through. I do not see him having a huge family (like Bruno, James, Jake, Gary, Bobby). One to two kids would be his ideal family size. His first born is a girl and his second is a boy.

🌺 When his two kids were born, Oliver didn’t sob, but he did cry. He was almost scared to touch them because they were so small compared to him. He was scared he’d break them. But once they looked up into his eyes, he was smitten. No love could ever compare to the love he has for his children.

🌺 Oliver as a girl dad is incredibly sweet. He tries to be strong with her, but she is so much like him that he can’t resist when she gives him her big brown eyes. He sees so much of himself in her. She has all of his mannerisms and quirks. She is Oliver’s little twin.

🌺 Oliver as a boy dad is energetic! His son keeps him on his toes, and always pushing boundaries. You’d think his daughter would be that way, but no, his son is his complete opposite. He’s always getting into something. Cannot leave him alone for a second! Dandelion gets exhausted being his partner in crime.

🌺 He loves reading bedtime stories!

🌺 Breakfast is a busy time in this household. Food cooking, people rushing around, it gets crazy. Oliver likes to be the one cooking. He makes breakfast every single morning before work and school. Includes little pictures he drew in the kids’ lunch boxes, too.

🌺 Dandelion rotates sleeping in the kids’ rooms. She likes to check up on them through the night. She’s their cat-mom. And she is insanely protective of them. No one messes with her human babies. 🐈

🌺 Oliver actually gets along with his kids as teenagers. He’s laid back and pretty easy-going. He knows when to give them space. He’s not quite up on a lot of the trends, in which case his kids will kindly educate him.

🌺 His daughter’s friends have crushes on him and his son’s friends are intimidated by him (at first). He thinks it’s funny.

🌺 Oliver is Southeast Asian, so he loves to teach his kids all about his culture. He’s very proud of that. He likes to make a traditional dish a few times a week for dinner, and invite his nan over. He’s very close with her.

🌺 As a tattoo artist, Oliver’s kids have been hanging out at the shop since they were newborns. His daughter actually wants to follow in his footsteps, and would love to be his apprentice. She’s insanely gifted at art and can draw anything that pops into her head. Her specialty is portraits. Oliver’s proud to teach her everything he knows. His son would “rather die than work here…” (actual quote from him).

🌺 Bruno got his first tattoo by Oliver, and they frequently hang out at each other’s houses. Their families are pretty close. Every now and then Will and Kobi hangs out with them, too.

🌺 Oliver’s parenting style is just vibing and going with the flow. He has raised his kids to be genuinely good people. He is a proud father, and encourages them daily to chase their dreams. No matter what happens in life, he will always stand right beside his children and guide them. He melts my heart so much.

AOT FINAL SEASON SPOILERS !!!! Some angst for the soul

The memory of Connie opening the door to where you stood replays one too many times. Over and over, you hear his words fall out his lips and see the tear roll down his face.

It hurt. It hurt to the point to where you wanted to go out and find a way to be with her. It’s stupid that you were in the room next door to where it happened yet you were alive and she was not.

The whole point of making the trip to retrieve Eren was to find a way to not lose anymore lives. Very naive of everyone to think you wouldn’t lose an asset like Sasha.

I’m front of her gravestone Mikasa sits bunched into a ball. You stand in front of her only able to replay memories of that night. She looks up at you waiting to say something - nothing is said. All you give her is a blank stare. The overthinking of the situation makes you light headed, causing you to sway a little in place.

Seeing your body move, Jean flies next to you to help you balance yourself before you fell. You regain yourself and put a hand up to stop him letting him know you were fine.

“I’ll be going. I’m tired of coming here”

A blunt emotionless response to the silence. You had already gave your condolences to Sasha’s family. They knew how much she meant to you. The chef was the one who had so much going on that you. Just had to go.

“And you. Please shut up ….what was your name ? …..doesn’t matter just pile down” you walk passed him.

Nicolo grabs. Your shoulder with a grip that you were able to break. Your sharp glare striking fear into his eyes. It did not stop him from yelling at you.

“Does it not hurt you ?! You two were close ?! How the hell is it that you’re acting this way”

“C’mon Nicolo Y/n is also grieving”

“Doesn’t seem like she is” he answers to Connie.

Mikasa looks over to you. Your tears at the brim - ready to spill. Your eyes were so irritated from crying. It was crazy to you how this imbecile had not noticed.

“Listen here, you aren’t the only one hurting. Sasha was very much important to me like she was to you. She was my first love - my first everything !”

Your eyes let the tears roll down your face as you talk to him. Sasha’s father steps in when he sees you step towards the taller male.

“It’s okay sweetheart, let it out. Ya needa let the pain heal” her fathers voice calms you. He was like a father figure after all. You didn’t want to alter the situation. You wiped the tears away and let Mikasa guide your once again swaying body back to headquarters.

“You need to lay down. You haven’t slept in days”

Mikasa cracks a smile towards you trying to pry your long olive colored coat off you to get you to bed. The bed was somewhere where you didn’t want to be. You wanted to stand by the window looking out at the scenery that was going dark as the sun set.

The day ended and a new started. That morning you’re walking towards Levi’s office when you’re informed that the child that shot and killed Sasha has escaped along with the little boy that tagged along with her.

“She’s related to Reiner. The stupid little button nose says it all”

You laugh at the situation before continuing to walk your way.

“I Sasha, Eren is going to be the end of us with all this havoc”

9-1-1 6x11 "In Another Life": Thoughts

Okay it took me a while because oh boy i was really overwhelmed after this episode.

I must start my thoughts by saying I'm so in love with this episode. I didn't feel so tense and focused since idk May Day. It's probably in my top 3 episodes of the series.

I do understand Eddie's absence since this seems like to be an episode addressing Father/Kid relationship's the most, and it's surrounding Buck, which is the reason we see a highlight of specific relevant people in Buck's life during the dream he has.

Bobby (father and guidance figure),

Chris (Kid, the one Buck feels responsible and even guilt for failing),

Buckley parents (The source of his trauma)

Daniel (a presence that embodies the trauma in Buck's mind)

Maddie with Doug (a presence that is an extension of his trauma of not being able to fix everything).

I am really happy they chose to make Buck comeback not for the anyone but by himself, by realizing his worthy and how he did change the lives of many even if the world he lives is one where he couldn't control/fix what happened to Maddie and Daniel.

I'm obviously biased here but I'm soo in love with how they did Buck and Bobby scenes (lol unhinged deranged Bobby must have been so fun for PK and Oliver) plus I love that even unhinged Bobby is being a simp for Athena and a dad for Buck. But one thing I must highlight is Bobby being the voice of reason in Buck's subconscious.

Bobby is someone that Buck looks up to and admires, so it makes sense to be Bobby the figure guiding Buck to the answer, except it's a messy version of Bobby that we get. Confusing of course, but I say it makes totally sense that the Bobby playing the the voice of reason in Buck's subconscious to be a messy Bobby, because Buck himself is messy and this is all in Buck's mind. He has been struggling with this trauma since his childhood, this trauma messed with his entire life, so making the voice of reason figure a messy one, was a really cool touch.

I'm kinda a fan of how the guidance of Buck until he find the answer happened with through Chim, Hen and mostly Bobby, since it's how it started. These 4 together. There could have been more scenes of Eddie outside the dream though.

And honestly I think calling whatever The Buckleys and Chimney's father are doing of redemption is a reach. I mean redemption means to pay the debt, make up for your mistakes and the only thing they were doing was the bare minimum. I mean the Buckley being there in a moment their child needed, meanwhile Mr. Han couldn't even voice his feeling, his wife had to do it for convince Chimney.

What we saw was the bare minimum, and we still saw more of the team and Bobby than them... The Buckleys behavior to me indicates it's simply a band-aid on a open wound, it's actually the very same pattern they did their whole life "Buck get's hurt and just them they give him attention". They're in the final scenes most probably because Buck is still hoping it works. The recovery might as well just be him realizing that it won't and is fine, because he still has a family to go back.

The episode made it very clear that the parents might be the Buckley's, but Buck's dad is Bobby.

So to me it was a 10/10 episode.

Is there any piece of British media you enjoy a lot? I want to learn the British accent (for my career, ofc) and it's the best way to get myself into it

Ooh, that's a really intriguing question, and I'd love to hear about your career if you don't mind sharing because it sounds interesting! I like to do voiceovers for a hobby so I definitely get the importance of having media to compare and go off of. Of course, I have no clue about specific accents so you might have to do additional research if you need a very specific region, but I'll try my best to give a few pieces of media that might be able to help.

•The Magnus Archives/The Magnus Protocol: It's a horror podcast about an institute that takes in statements on the paranormal, and has a wide array of characters to use for reference. And since it's an audio performance, it might be easier to pick up inflections and things like that. Not to mention it's incredibly entertaining.

•The Outlaws: I never got around to finishing this show, but it's pretty good. It's about a group of people doing community service that end up getting involved in a drug gang ring. It's pretty funny even though quite a bit of the comedy comes from second-hand embarrassment, but it's definitely not bad.

•End of the F***ing World: That's another show I haven't finished primarily because I was watching it with my brother. From what I can remember, it's about two kids (one a moody teen girl and the other a teen boy who thinks he's a psychopath) who run off to find the girl's estranged father. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about it, but from what I do know it was entertaining.

•Extras: It's sort've like The Office (in fact it was written and stars two of the guys who wrote the UK Office) but it follows a guy who's trying to become a prominent actor and fails miserably. It's got a lot of guest appearances and it's a relatively short series as well. I personally hate shows like The Office, but this was one I liked.

•Haunting of Bly Manor: Not as good as Haunting of Hill House in my opinion, but it's still an incredibly good although short horror series. It's about a woman who goes to care for two kids for their uncle after they were orphaned. It'll definitely be entertaining to watch and it's worth a try.

•Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show/TV Series: You already know what Hitchhiker's Guide is so I won't explain it, but if I had to choose one or the other to suggest I would go with the radio show. The TV series is amazing, don't get me wrong, but for your purposes I find that audio-only pieces of media would work best. This is the version I prefer to listen to.

•Anything Monty Python: I can't guarantee that this would be the best source because it genuinely might be too entertaining. I fuckin love Monty Python with everything I have and there's not much I can say about it because it's just something you have to experience.

Of course, you can also look towards prominent British actors like Tim Curry, Angela Lansbury, and John Oliver, which is something I would suggest doing as well. Personally another thing that I've found to be helpful is also practicing a transatlantic accent, which is basically halfway between an American accent and a British accent. The only two people I can think of off the top of my head that have a very good transatlantic accent are Vincent Price and David Ogden Stiers (specifically as his role as Charles Winchester in M*A*S*H), so that might be some good warm-up. Hopefully this was of some help!

Oliver’s been sitting at the kitchen table for— he’s not sure how long. The bowl of cereal in front of him has gotten soggy, having lost his appetite more than half an hour ago. His parents had gone to another outing and left this afternoon. Her mother had promised they’d return before he had to go to bed, that they’d at least get to have dinner together.

They still haven’t gotten back.

“Oliver, dear?” Mary, the maid, quietly calls out to him, candle in hand as she steps into the room. Her white hair is still evident in the darkness, despite only being in her fifties. It’s clear she had been in her quarters before she came in, still in her long sleepwear. “You have to go to bed.”

“Mother isn’t home yet.” He could care less about his father. If he had known Oliver stayed up so late waiting for them, he’d get the scold of a lifetime, maybe even a slap to the face for being too sensitive. No matter how rare the physical approach may be (his father was careful about leaving any marks on him when he got angry), he wouldn’t put it past him.

Mary sighs, stepping closer to him and benignly brushing her fingers through his hair. It’s comforting, and the exhaustion he’s feeling finally settles over him. This was pointless, wasn’t it? They would always do this. He spends every one of his nights waiting by the door for them to arrive so they can have dinner together, and when they never do, he stays up until he can’t anymore or until Mary comes to take him back to bed. Just like tonight.

“They’ll be here in the morning. You need to get some rest. A growing boy needs his sleep.” She replies, a small smile evident in her voice. At least Oliver had Mary and his friends. That was enough for when his parents weren’t here.

Before he can protest, perhaps see if he can get five more minutes of waiting, he hears it from the shadows in front of him, a whisper that follows the drift inside the house.

With a dejected sigh, he finally stands up from the table, reaching for Mary’s hand and holding on tightly while she guides him back to his room. They pass the front door on the way to the stairs, and he almost convinces himself they’ll suddenly burst in, his mother still impeccably dressed and exhausted yet eager to greet him.

Obviously that doesn’t happen, but it wouldn’t be the first time his hopes are proven to be useless in the end.

What would the bois do to make a very shy, skittish Darling feel comfortable with them?

Jacob would tell you stories... it's one of the things he's good at, and it's an easy way to spend time with you. He'd talk and talk and watch you relax to the sound of his voice until you were comfortable around him.

Markus would stay near you. He'd help you, guide you, make sure that you could rely on him. He'd has a warm presence most of the time, so it should be extremely easy to be comfortable around him. He has golden retriever vibes.

Oliver would bring you gifts. Fruits, flowers, interesting leaves... he'd show you the things that bring him joy and hope that you would start to feel comfortable around him. He'd teach you about his passion and hope that you'll teach him about yours.

Torrin is the father friend... he'd make sure that you could feel safe around him. He has a warm voice and has no issue telling off one of the guys if they make you uncomfortable.

Michael... well, he wouldn't make you feel comfortable around him until he falls for you. He's a dick when he first meets you, after all. He will push you away. Once he falls though... he'll show you that he can be sweet.

Nicolas would let you play with his hair or hold his hand if you needed something to ground yourself. He'd joke around with you, with lots of bad puns to make you either laugh or roll your eyes.

actually, tell us everything about your LoZ AU

Sorry I had so much to say apparently so whacking this all under the cut o7

So my first thought was what game do they fit into best. Ocarina of time is an interesting choice, Sheik Bruce is pretty cool and Navi could be a fun take on a lantern ring as she’s a source of information and such, which is the same reason Fi and Skyward Sword also has potential (that and FLYING!! Oh Hal you would love a Loftwing). But I settled on Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom because of course I did.

The Sheikah Slate/Funky arm work soooo well as a lantern ring replacement, and Hal gets to glide around and build planes so boom, perfect Link role for Hal. And BOTW Zelda is a big ‘ol over worked nerd with the weight of the world on her shoulders which is very Bruce.

So they meet when they’re both teens, only around 16 or so when Hal is assigned Prince Bruce’s personal knight, which Bruce hates because he can handle himself thank you very much, but Hal is persistent and carries out his duty. They argue a lot. Bruce feels like Hal is looking down at him for being unable to figure out how to seal Ganon (Who is Ganon is this au? Darkseid I guess) away, which is just him projecting his own insecurities. He also doesn’t understand why a reckless idiot like Hal would be chosen as their hero and wielder of the master sword. Hal, who’s spent years training to fill his late father’s shoes and prove himself as a knight is angry that Bruce won’t see him and his skills for what they are and assumes that Bruce dislikes him because he’s not from a noble background. Things between the two of them are pretty tense.

They’re not in this alone however! Four champions from the rest of Hyrule join them in an attempt to beat Darkseid. Clark (Daruk), Diana (Urbosa), Arthur (Mipha) and Oliver (Rivali) join them and become the pilots of the divine beasts. Up to you if they stay human/Hylian or become one of Zelda’s fantasy races. They try to repair the frosty relationship between Hal and Bruce, trying to get them to put aside their nonsense and see each other properly, but it doesn’t work until Bruce is caught in a surprise attack by Darkseid’s cult followers and Hal saves him. It’s the first time Hal has gotten to show off his skills properly and Bruce has a little “Oh.” moment about it. 

After that the two of them are more open with each other. Hal finally tells Bruce that his father was a knight who died trying to protect Bruce’s parents, the former King and Queen of Hyrule, on the night they were murdered. He always wanted to follow in his fathers footsteps despite his mother’s resistance to the idea, but he also always wanted to become a knight because he knew Bruce was like him and he felt an urge to protect him. Bruce tells Hal he’s scared that without his parents guidance he’ll never unlock the powers he’s said to have that would allow him to seal Darkseid away. A friendship blooms between the two of them and the baby idiot pining goes into full swing. 

Between experimenting with the guardian tech, training with the champions and visiting the goddess springs, Bruce is exhausted. He’s working himself to the bone in hopes of being ready when Darkseid arrives. And Hal can do is watch over him. Bruce’s 17th birthday arrives and he is finally permitted to go to the spring of wisdom to hopefully awaken his power, but to no avail. Darkseid appears, all the champions fall, you know the drill. They’ve failed, Bruce has failed. Hal gets mortally injured protecting Bruce, and to save him Bruce puts him in the shrine of resurrection, knowing that doing so will mean the loss of his memories and the potential that they will never meet again. He doesn’t care. He just wants to save Hal, he can’t let Hal die too. 

Hal wakes up, 100 years later, with no memories of who he is or what he’s doing. He just knows he trusts the voice of the boy asking for his help in his head more than anything. An old man (Alfred), helps guide him and get him back on his feet and accustomed to the powers of the Sheikah Slate before explaining what has happened. Hal sets off to regain his memories and save Bruce. He meets the new champions (it would be fun if they were the Robins?) and sets his friends' souls free from the divine beasts. Said friends grant him their powers and their spirits join him on his journey (This means constant jokes from Ollie, constant worrying from Clark, and Diana and Arthur making so many comments about his fighting form. All his friends are dead but they still find ways to be annoying. It’s a ghostly road trip.). 

With their help Hal gets all his memories back and then sets off to defeat Darkseid and save Bruce. They do, and as Bruce and Hal hug it out the spirits of their friends finally move on and the two of them set out to restore the kingdom. 

NOW. Tears of the Kingdom! Is the perfect Link for Hal, he can literally make constructs. I don’t wanna get too far into spoiler territory with this game since I know a lot of people are still playing, but I don’t think Zelda’s story in it fits Bruce as well as BOTW’s does. So maybe we can just smush the two together and Hal get’s the Zonai arm early.

I’ll just leave you with thoughts of them rebuilding Hyrule together and living up in Hal’s little house. Oh and Dinah is Kass. And Barry is… Beedle. Because I’d miss him otherwise. That is all.

The Neverending Story, Chapter 2 - Atreyu's Mission

(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Neverending Story, read this one!)

In which I go on a rant or two about anti-Indigenous bias, conscious or otherwise.

Because(1) of their special importance, deliberations concerning the welfare of all Fantastica were held in the great throne room of the palace, which was situated only a few floors below the Magnolia Pavilion.

499 of the best doctors in all Fantastica have all examined the Childlike Empress, and are discussing their findings. The 500th enters, after spending several hours with her.

A tangent is made to describe how the many doctors are varied in species, and not all of them are "conducive to good health."

A second tangent is taken to describe how the Childlike Empress doesn't precisely rule Fantastica, but her existence is so critical to Fantastica's existence somehow(2) that every creature owes their existence to her, so her health is of concern to all.

Off of that tangent, Bastian takes one to think about when his mother died in hospital. How, afterward, even though he had every thing he could have asked for, his relationship with his father was never able to heal.(3)

We return back all the way up the tangent chain to the doctors, discussing how the Childlike Empress (henceforth CLE when I remember I can do that) shows no traditional symptoms. The 500th doctor, Cairon the centaur,(4) stills them to silence by his very presence. He wears an amulet everyone recognizes: a light and a dark snake twisted together into an oval, biting each other's tails. The A U R Y N,(5) the symbol of the CLE.

Bastian notes that this must be the same symbol as is on the front of the book.

Cairon reassures them that he's only wearing the Auryn until he can locate the intended bearer. The CLE's illness requires a hero and a Great Quest,(6) and the CLE herself has entrusted to Cairon the locating and bestowing of such. He says the hero's name is Atreyu, and says where Atreyu lives, and tells them that's "all there is to know" and leaves. The doctors have no idea who this Atreyu might be.

Bastian hears the great clock strike 10. He's surprised at how fast the time is passing(7) compared to when he's in class.

The people of the Grassy Ocean behind the Silver Mountains are known as Grass People or Greenskins, for their olive green skin. They have blue-black hair, often worn in long pigtails by men and women. Several more paragraphs are spent describing their lifestyle, and how news of the CLE's illness and the horrors happening elsewhere haven't reached them yet.(8)

Cairon arrives, exhausted from his journey, and tells them he needs them to retrieve Atreyu from the hunt. The people are reluctant, but an old woman recognizes Cairon, and a young girl volunteers to go find him. When she's gone, Cairon faints.

When he wakes, Atreyu has come, and he's just a boy. He complains that Cairon has interrupted his manhood ceremonial hunt and he can't be a man now for another whole year, and demands to know why. Cairon asks if there's another Atreyu, someone older, but Atreyu says no, he's the only one. Cairon says the CLE's choices are "hard to fathom" and if he'd known this would be a child's journey he'd have refused to find him.(9)

Cairon says Atreyu must choose whether to accept this quest now, but it is a true choice, and he's sure the CLE will find someone else if he rejects it. Atreyu asks what the mission is, and Cairon says, to find a cure for the CLE. Atreyu is shocked that she's sick, so Cairon explains, and they talk well into the night.

Finally, Atreyu accepts the Great Quest, and Cairon transfers Auryn to Atreyu's neck.

'A U R Y N gives you great power,' he said solemnly, 'but you must not make use of it. For the Childlike Empress herself never makes use of her power. A U R Y N will protect you and guide you, but whatever comes your way you must never interfere, because from this moment on your own opinion ceases to count. For that same reason you must go unarmed. You must let what happens happen. Everything must be equal in your eyes, good and evil, beautiful and ugly, foolish and wise, just as it is in the eyes of the Childlike Empress.(10) You may only search and inquire, never judge. Always remember that, Atreyu!'

Atreyu says he will be worth of Auryn, and Cairon tells him to say goodbye to his parents and begin immediately. Atreyu has no parents, they died when he was small, and the whole village raised him, which is why he was named the word for "Son of All".

Bastian reflects on how he can relate. Even though his father is still alive, he's so distant that it feels as though Bastian has no one raising him at all. He's glad to have this much in common with Atreyu, because otherwise they have nothing similar except being on Great Quests.(11)

Atreyu asks where to begin, but Cairon says from this point, no one can advise him until the Great Quest ends.(12) Atreyu bids Cairon farewell, and goes to mount his horse, Artax, and explain the Great Quest as best he can, since Artax is a sapient horse.(13) Then, they ride off into the darkness.

In another part of Fantastica, unnoticed by anyone, the darkness condenses, takes physical form, four legs with eyes of green fire and a "huge shaggy head." It sniffs the air, finds the scent it's looking for, growls, and takes off after its prey.

Bastian pretends to be Atreyu on a gym horse(14) until he realizes he's being childish and someone could hear him. He almost starts eating his packed sandwich lunch, but decides to save his food, as he's not sure how long it will have to last.

(1) The B illumination is someone, I think Atreyu, and the centaur. (2) Since she's fallen ill at the same time that Fantastica is disappearing to nothing/Nothing, it only makes sense the two are related in such a fantastical world. (Subtlety is for cowards, give me the tell with the show.) (3) At the risk of overexplaining, I think the implication here is that Bastian's mother was as essential to his and his father's ability to exist as the Childlike Empress is to Fantastica, and the loss of her changed them both. Though, I think the fact that Fantastica is disappearing into nothing, while Bastian still has a chance with his father, is the unspoken hope. (4) You may recognize "Chiron" more readily. Centaur son of Cronus, and the greatest healer of all time (exaggeration), among other things. (5) Yes, that's how it's stylized in my book. No, I will not type it like that again outside of direct quotes. (6) Would it even be a children's fantasy book without a quest? (7) The side effect of this sort of commentary deep read is that I have to take my time, which is how it's been 5 pages and with distractions and lethargy from the heat, I've been at this almost an hour. So, time is not going fast for me at all. In fact, in a great divine irony, I have so little in common with Bastian that I find it difficult to relate to or feel eager to keep reading his part of the story in anything but an academic sense. (8) I knew this was going to deal poorly with some issues, it's inevitable in a book so old, but this is sure feeling pointedly like bad stereotyping of Indigenous people, especially after the smoke signals bit in the intro. Many Indigenous people have what humans have termed olive toned skin, but making them "olive green" feels more like trying to reverse the old and racist way of calling us "red", possibly (in the way authors still do) to try and dodge accusations of racism. I know some of that is just me being cynical, but unfortunately it's something I have to try and get out of my system here so I don't keep harping on it in my commentary for the rest of Atreyu's appearances in the book. (9) There's something so paternalistic about this in context of (8). Oh no, we couldn't possibly rely on such a [slur here] child to save the world. (And again, I know that's probably not really how it's intended, nor how most people would read it, but I can't help but see what I see through my experiences.) (10) I'm saying this as an adult with my own baggage on the subject, but this seems like a really junk form of government, just so we're all clear. (Not acting is allowing the status quo to continue, with all its injustices. I'm not a fan.) But, I can remember it feeling so idealistic as a child who didn't know better. (11) What does Bastian think his Great Quest is? Running away from home to hide his thievery? (12) Again, this feels like bad advice to suggest that children might want to follow ever. (13) The word's not used in the text, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people call intelligent conversational creatures "sentient" because the way I learned it, that just means has senses. Most, perhaps all animals are sentient. Sapient is the word for thinking, like homo sapiens. (I am also fully aware that common usage is what defines a word, not a dictionary, which is meant to reflect common usage and not define it, and my argument is petty. That's also why "and I" is becoming acceptable grammar in all instances even when "me and" would be the grammatically correct sentence fragment if you removed the other person/people from the situation, which is how we used to be taught to tell the difference. Something something my hypothetical lawn.) (14) At first I got confused, and had to flip back to the introduction. Indeed, he remarks on gymnasium equipment and then horse, separate from the stuffed animals, so it must be the gymnastics routine sort.

“Finally, Zeus Soter was an important god of the household. With other deities such as Hygieia (Health) and Agathos Daimon (the Good God), he traditionally received the third libation at symposia. The first libation was poured to Zeus and the Olympian gods, who represent the cosmos; the second to the heroes, who stand for the city; and the third to Zeus Soter, the patron of home and family. Because of his position as head of the divine family of Olympian deities, Zeus was the archetype of the patriarchal father. In myth, Zeus’ many amorous alliances with mortal women produced heroes, who gave rise to aristocratic lineages. Thus he was worshiped as Zeus Patroös (Ancestor) by Dorians, who traced their lineage to his son Herakles, and more generally as a god of familial bonds. At Athens, Zeus Phratrios and Athena Phratria presided over the enrollment of boys into the phratries, or brotherhoods, that guaranteed their status as legitimate offspring of citizens. Shrines of individual phratries sometimes had altars dedicated to the pair. But most widespread of all were Zeus’ many domestic cults. Zeus Herkeios (of the Courtyard) received sacrifices on behalf of the household at an open-air altar. An anecdote from Herodotus (6.67–68) illustrates the role that Zeus played as the guarantor of the male line. When confronted by his enemies with claims that he was illegitimate, the Spartan king Demaratos sacrificed to Zeus and brought his mother a portion of the entrails. Placing them in her hand, he beseeched her in the name of Zeus Herkeios to tell him the truth about his parentage, and she complied. Zeus Herkeios is attested as early as Homer (Od. 22.333–37), who mentions that Odysseus and his father sacrifice to the god outside their ancestral home. Zeus’ importance to fathers may also explain the unusual votive offerings uncovered in the hilltop sanctuary at Messapeai near Sparta. The sanctuary of Zeus Messapeus contained weapons, armor, and athletic gear, but these were far outnumbered by crude, handmade clay statuettes of males with huge, erect phalloi. The site was frequented mostly by men, who may have sought Zeus’ aid in becoming fathers.

Zeus Ktesios (of Possessions) was a humbler deity. In Athens, it was customary for the head of the household to wreathe a two-handled jar with wool tufts around its “ears” and “from its right shoulder to its forehead,”and to empty into the jar a mixture of pure water, olive oil, and various fruits and grains, referred to as ambrosia. The finished jar stood in the storeroom as a “sign” of Zeus and acted as a charm to increase the household goods. That the ritual has many points of contact with funerary customs suggests a relationship to domestic ancestor cults. Though he had public altars in some cities, Zeus Ktesios was primarily an intimate, family god. The orator Isaeus (8.16) tells of an Athenian who admitted only family members to the sacrifice for this god, though his practice was not necessarily universal.”

One of Tam's most prized possessions is a book on the language of flowers, that her father had gifted her in the third grade.  The page for is belladonna is wrinkled thin from how many times its been flipped open to, rhodohedron has had it's dog-eared corner torn off and and coriander sticks out from where it had been slightly torn off out of the binding. Without further ado, lemme answer all that you have asked!!

2-How easy is it for your character to laugh? Laughter?? Antoine?? Dear Gods, Laughter is to Antoine what the Sun is to a Vampire! She grew up directly under her father’s strict tutelage, and laughter or any kind of sign of spontaneity were definitely not encouraged at all. So, she never laughed much as a child, and growing up, due to all that has happened in her life, she still doesn’t laugh much, if at all. She wishes she could, though. She is so aware of how serious she is, how strict she is toward herself, how in control of her emotions she always is, but she doesn’t enjoy being the way she is, and even if she doesn’t show it, she is always wounded whenever someone calls her a killjoy. She wants to be happy and laugh, but she doesn’t know how anymore.

8-What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child? As a child, Antoine was partially subjected to a most peculiar education: her father wanted her to be the son he knew Mathias would never be, and her mother instead wanted her to grow up to be as a refined lady as she herself was, and this caused her a huge conflict within herself. Her natural instinct and her natural strong personality made her feel more attuned with what her father wanted her to be, but her mother still insisted that she was to be poised and graceful. So, as a child, she was always told to act like a lady, to be elegant, sophisticated, polite, and becoming, and she hated it because she could never be enough, could never live up to what they expected of her. She was not a boy, so she could not live up to be the son her father wanted, and she was not feminine enough to fulfill her mother’s wishes to become the next Mistress of the House, and this brought her to reject all that’s feminine and delicate and graceful. Her rocky relationship with Dorothea, at least in the beginning, stems also from all of this.

10-What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them? The biggest lies Antoine has ever said are connected to the darkest secret she carries in her heart. No one knows about this and no one ever will. She has sworn to herself that she would carry this secret to her grave because she knows what would happen to Mathias and Colette, and Claude, if she were to reveal it, and she is terrified of losing them. On a lighter tone, the lie she most frequently remember telling is connected to her name. Her birth name was Antoinette and her twin usually refers to her as "Toinette" but DEAR GODS ABOVE, DO NOT DARE TO CALL HER WITH THAT NAME. She goes by Antoine for a reason, and she will VERY MUCH glare if anyone dares to try to tell her that she is lying about her name.

13-What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color? Antoine thinks that the best colours for her is olive green, tawny, and cream, and she looks extremely handsome when wearing this palette. However, she was once convinced into wearing the darkest shade of black, white, and red, and she truly looked stunning in that palette. Still, she prefers to see herself in the modest shades of her Assassin’s garb.

30-Who do they most regret meeting? François-Thomas Germain. Dear Gods, Germain is the one she regrets the most meeting. To him and his persona are connected all her shame and her secrets, all that she has kept from her family in order to protect them and provide for them when Mathias was injured and Colette was too young to do anything to help. Sometimes, when she allows herself to feel fragile -and it happens very rarely - she wished she had done things differently and she wished she had had someone that could have guided her through the most difficult moments of her life. Sometimes she wonders what person she would have been, had she not met Germain, for she truly believes part of the reason her heart has become so hard is due to her connection to him.

42-How badly do they want to reach their end goal? It depends on the goal. Antoine has no interest in pursuing any personal gain or glory, at least not to the same extent like when she was younger and still very much influenced by her father’s indoctrination and teachings. But she does believe that the Brotherhood tenets and the creed should be respected and followed and she believes that there cannot be compromises with the Templars, on any level. She applies the same passionate intransigence, even in respect of her siblings safety and well-being. So, to protect the Brotherhood, her brothers-in-arms and her blood siblings, she is truly willing to go above and beyond. She is ready to face the consequences that will come with her choices, if it means to ensure the safety of the people around her.

QUESTIONS FOR THE CREATOR A.K.A ME

B-What inspired you to create them? I can definitely say that Antoine was born as the “reworked” version of her sister Colette. You see, when I created Colette, back in 2020, she was an only child, much like Dorothea is in Syndicate. However, over time, I wanted to give her a more ample entourage of OCs to interact with, and I wanted them to belong to the Brotherhood(Colette herself is a civilian. Sympathizer, sure, but still civilian and inactive in the Assassins/Templars War). So, first I decided to make Mathias (aka my own version of Greencoat) her elder brother. But then I wasn’t satisfied. I felt I might need to retooled Colette’s character, so I went to the draftboard and started reworking on her whole personality and motivation, and it was in that moment that Antoine was actually born, albeit, at that moment, it was still under the name of Colette. Then, I was kinda missing the spontaneous, sweet, veracious personality my Colette had in the beginning, but I had also grown attached to my emotionally constipated new brainchild. And so, I decided to keep what I came up with and Antoine was born, the eldest of the De Beaumont children, tough as nails but with a soft heart for her siblings.

D-Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look? Her physical appearance was pretty clear in my brain from the moment I took the decision to keep the character I had come up with. I wanted her to have a tough look, a sort of dangerous beauty, someone that you DON’T WANT to have at your tail, because once she has tracked you, she won’t let you go until she has completed her mission. Also, I wanted her to bear resemblance to her twin Mathias and her younger sister Colette. So, in that sense, I only edit her colouring, verging on a palette that would make it clear that she was Mathias’ twin and that she was connected also to his role as Greencoat, so to speak, AND with her hair and eyes instead verging more towards Colette’s own palette.

E-Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you? I would say yes and no to both question. Antoine is hard, stubborn, ruthless in her own right and ready to truly do anything for the people she loves. But she is too adamant, too harsh, and too difficult to reason with sometimes, so I think that we would butt heads ALL THE TIME (we both also have quite the fiery temper, so mmmm I think we would truly argue a lot, in virtue of the fact that we might be A TAD too similar in the way we reacts). But in general, she is motivated by the immense terror of losing the people she loves the most, she fears that some ill could befall them if she is not around to protect them, and I can relate to that to an extent, which is why I think this would be a point where the two of us would definitely see eye to eye.

F-What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)? Pride. Oh so very much pride. She is one of my most favourite ocs out there, I truly respect her strength of mind, her cold blood and how she is able to lead people, and how much of a warrior she is. I just overall adore her (and I honestly live for the fact that she is super protective of both her siblings AND WILL MESS with the people that are in love with them -aka Arno and Dorothea. She has no problems letting them both have the shovel talk and tells them both that she WILL BE watching them, and if they dare to hurt either Mathias or Colette, they better pray to God to have mercy because she will have none lol). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 4

Today was the day I finally had the "holy crap, I'm in Greece" moment. At 12:30, a small group of us (thank god) departed and made our way to Cape Sounion. Cape Sounion is well known for the Temple of Poseidon that stands on the top of the hill, greeting incoming boats. It is involved in two famous myths. The creation of the olive tree, and the journey of Theseus.

The first one goes like this:

When trying to determine who would be the patron god of the city of Athens, Poseidon and Athena both stood out. They began to fight for the patronage, and when she realized that fighting was futile, Athena suggested a competition. Her and Poseidon would create something for the city, and the inhabitants would select the best one. Poseidon, struck his trident to the ground, and salt water began to flow. His gift to the inhabitants was a salt water fountain. Athena, created the very first olive tree. The inhabitants recognized that they could use every bit of the olive tree for fuel, food, and trade so they named the city after her. However, Athens was a very naval central power. They needed to stay on good terms with the god of the seas if they wished to survive. So to appease him, they built the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion and would travel before every voyage to receive his blessing.

The second is a bit more complex.

In the myth, there is a creature called a Minotaur. The king of Crete held it in a Labyrinth beneath the city, and would hold a blood tax every five years. Since Crete was the power at the time, he would call seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls to be brought to Crete to be thrown into the Labyrinth to die. Each boat that left Athens with children held black sails. Tired of the death of children, Theseus, the prince of Athens asked his father to be allowed to travel to Crete with the children in order to kill the Minotaur. Aegeus, his father, was reluctant as Theseus was his only child, but he relented when Theseus promised to return on a ship with white sails, symbolizing his success. Theseus did in fact slaughter the beast with the help of the Cretan princess Ariadne whoh gifted him a magic ball of thread to guide him out of the maze. Taking her home as his wife, they stopped at another small island along the way. When Theseus discovered her flirting with the god of wine, Dionysus, he left quietly, abandoning her there. She was so furious, she cursed him. It wasn't anything seemingly gorey, but her curse of forgetfulness caused Theseus to return with black sails, not white. When Aegeus saw the sails from the cliff at Cape Sounion, he believed his only son dead. In despair, he flung himself off the cliff, killing himself. The sea is now called the Aegean Sea, in honor of him.

While these stories aren't very happy-go-lucky they make sense when you're standing in the same spot. It really feels as if these things could have happened. It seems magical almost. I sat on an ancient piece of marble and I struggled to respond to M as she talked to me about something. I am in Greece. I'm sitting on a chunk of rock that was mined, shaped, and placed thousands of years ago by people who were so technologically and emotionally advanced that they created my favorite thing in the world: theatre. I mean, it doesn't get much cooler than that.

After we left, we drove a bit before stopping at a beach. We got some swimming in before having an amazing lunch that had 6 courses, including zucchini fries and the best calamari I've ever eaten. On the way back, once the ocean is out of sight, I promptly fell asleep. Currently, I'm sitting with my roommate R and eating some chicken kabobs with tzatzikis sauce and that rocking lemonade. Over all, best day so far. And hopefully, you'll see me again Cape Sounion.

Things I've taken away from today:

Yes, the water is that clear.

Don't bike in Greece, you'll die.

No food goes to waste, which is why the strays are so well fed/taken care of/

Greek gelato is the best I've had so far.

The water is really salty, so floating is easy in the Aegean.

I'm in love with this place.
