#I love the swamp tribe

Text
I like to think that at least once, the Avatar cycle seemed to skip the Water Tribe—like people knew it was the water tribe’s turn, everyone was looking for them, the tests are done on all the kids, but like 60-80 years go by and no avatar until some Earth Kingdom kid shows up. People wonder if the cycle skipped a generation or what, but nothing serious was going on at that time so they shrug and move on.
It’s only many many years later that someone is researching Swampbender oral history and someone tells the story of “Ol Stinky Jess, she was a funny one, could light the swamp on fire an’ all sorts o’ shenanigans! Best catfishgator catcher in the tribe, she was” and thats literally it, she just lived a totally chill life in the swamp and nobody knew what an avatar was at the time so they just rolled with that funny gal’s odd bending ways.

that swamp tribe korra au idea sounds g e n i u s
JSAIDOJSAJIODAS THANK YOU ANON!! YOU JUST MADE MY NIGHT!! here, have some more of my thoughts since I've been thinking of this AU non-stop and have been researching a LOT:
Korra's animal guide is still Naga, but I'm changing her species to fit Korra and the Swamp Tribe more! Here's a sketch I made a few days ago of Naga, the Wolverine-Deer!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
+ Some other sketches of animal guide ideas!
Naga's deer side is more inspired by the Sika Deer, since their adults tend to keep their spots! I chose the wolverine rather than the badger because wolverines are typically loner animals that can take down both predators and prey DOUBLE the size of them, which I think fits Korra's character more!
I've also been doodling around with Korra's design a little bit, since I don't think it would be a 1-to-1 copy of her canon design. Still, I haven't been able to settle down on anything just yet - especially since I've been trying to give the Foggy Swamp Tribe more of a culture rather than just being the Water Tribe's hillbilly cousins. I'm trying to combine both Native American tribes that lived in Florida and other wetlands with the obvious Vietnamese inspiration their tribe has! It's...taking me a bit, though, since I am researching multiple things at once while also being A Responsible Adult, skldjaldaja
So far, I'm settling down on these facts for my fic (cause I WILL BE WRITING THIS - SOMEDAY!!):
Senna is from the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Tonraq is still from the NWT. After his banishment, his ship veered off course and ran into the Swamp Tribe's delta, where he met Senna and decided to stay! He's not the chief, however, as I'm thinking that the most enlightened elders of the tribe are the elected leaders (maybe one has to meditate at the Banyan-Grove tree first before leading the FST?), and it is someone else at this current moment in time.
Sokka isn't dead! I headcanon that he died due to injuries in the Red Lotus attack, and..well...I don't think that goes exactly as planned in this AU, sjadkajdlade. Due to this, and thanks to him figuring out first that the water avatar was most likely Swamp Tribe, he has a bit of influence in Korra's life!
(Zukka will be in this btw, since I Love Them, but they won't take priority.)
Korra wasn't taken by the White Lotus when they discovered who she is. The Foggy Swamp Tribe is very protective of their own and who they see as family, loyal down to the bone, and when the White Lotus says that Korra has to go to their Southern Water Tribe facilities to be taught bending, they REFUSED it. I like to think that the family unit and community is INSANELY important to the Foggy Swamp Tribe, and just because Korra is the avatar doesn't mean that she needs to be taken away from her home.
So, basically, Korra grew up with her community and has childhood friends rather than being isolated like in canon! This changes a bit in how she approaches Mako, Bolin, and Asami when she meets up with them eventually. (AKA, fuck the romance triangle, I ain't doing that)
The entire plot of Korra has changed - due to Sokka being alive, Korra's stance on non-benders is different. Due to growing up in the Foggy Swamp Tribe, who teaches the ideals of everything and everyone is connected and that connection is important, Korra also goes about defeating Vaatu differently. Due to Tonraq never making it to the SWT, almost everyone thinks he's dead (mail can't exactly get through tall trees or extremely vicious animals), so Korra never even met Unalaq either...
That's all that I have thought of for now! Thank you for the ask, Im so SO HAPPY that you like my silly lil FST Korra AU!!!!

#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original characters#I’m slowly working on getting past my burnout and felt like I got enough rest#at least enough to draw something more or less simple#to keep my hand from forgetting how to hold a stylus#and wow. original characters that aren’t suiren or midori. a shocker#their names are nuying and afarin btw#and I have. So Many thoughts about them#watch me shower myself in praise lmao. *chidi anagonye voice* shut up I’m confident now#I really like how different their demeanours turned out#this is supposed to be like. six to eight months before afarin’s death#so she’s really living her best life#has a loving husband and two wonderful children and spends her days working outside in the warm sun#showing off her muscles and tattoos to anyone who chooses to look#oh yeah those are tattoos on her forearms like the ones ghazan has it’s hard to tell in black and white#between her and her husband (who I can’t decide on a name for rip) they make enough for a comfortable life. a good life#before the sickness came. that is.#meanwhile the swamp tribes are full on being ravaged by it#nuying’s high risk so she’s almost completely isolated safe for her toddler daughter#even for someone living in a polluted swamp her health is worse off than most#she had a hard pregnancy. a hard birth. miscarriages before and after#but she cares little for herself. her daughter is always at the forefront of her mind#she’s already lost her husband. she can’t lose her only child too#she doesn’t know if she’d rather someone less likely to get sick watch over her. or have her close by so she could ensure she was safe#not that anyone would bother to look after her little flower anyway. not with everyone calling her a curse#I could go on about the tragedy of nuying for so so long but sadly tag limits are a thing#I might colour this later idk we’ll see. also might draw them again but with liu this time and label it dead mom club or smth#oh also yes nuying is ming-hua’s mom and afarin is ghazan’s mom if it wasn’t obvious

Can I request a floyd x fem!kpop troll who was in her own group and Floyd’s reaction when he finds out? (If you need help w groups I suggest girls generation/SNSD or twice :D)
@!; I never knew! Floyd / Fem!Kpop Troll! Reader
"Tag list"! @writergal02 @chamille-trash @valvalentine69 @starzwithapen @ykvlanq
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ꨄ︎ Having met Floyd after your group had blew up, you were hesitant to tell him about your career. Not because you didn't trust him nor were you ashamed of yourself or your group members, yet... he was one of the first people who didn't know who you were. He didn't know your K-pop group, he didn't know your stage name, he didn't call you or fangirl over you when he saw you. It was honestly refreshing, really refreshing.
ꨄ︎ You had joint your group for fun, at first; you thought having a group of other like minded people to rise to fame with would be fucking amazing. And while it was, the amount of fans you guys got swamped with was, well, unbearable. You loved the support, you loved your fans, yet finally finding someone who didn't know who you were was like finding a needle in a hay stack. Especially when your management had managed to get your groups music in every tribe after the events at the Hard Rock tribe. It not only blasted your popularity within the K-Pop trolls group, and their following, yet throughout the other tribes. And you didn't want to ruin the thing you had going with Floyd; so you kept your mouth shut.
ꨄ︎ Every time you had to do something with your group, you always made up an excuse for Floyd. Little yet believable things, like "Oh my sister is sick, I have to take care of her", "I'm spending time with family", "I had a long day and need a moment to myself", "I'm baking with friends", "girls only sleep over sorry", "I'm not in the village right now!". You know, simple white lies that had some sort of truth behind them. You hated lying to Floyd, especially when you two were really clicking, yet you also couldn't tell him the truth; not yet. And Floyd always seemed to not mind, always respected your plans and you, so you thought it was alright.
ꨄ︎ Meanwhile, when you weren't hanging out with Floyd, Floyd was hanging out with his brothers, Poppy, and Viva. It was always casual hangouts either in Branch's bunker, Poppy's pod, or else where around the village. Yet, one day while hanging out in Branch's bunker, Poppy brought out Branch's record player. She began exclaiming, basically shouting and springing with excitement, with how Branch had got her a new vinyl of this band that Poppy loves! Bruce encouraged her to play it, and well Poppy and Viva squealed and danced around while listening to it. "Oh hey, it's that new band." Bruce mumbled, recognizing the tune and lyrics, as well as the voices, of the k-pop band that was currently running a rampage in his house. "My kids love these girls."
ꨄ︎ That was the first time Floyd was exposed to your music, or k-pop in general. He enjoyed it, so he had asked Branch where he bought it and went to go buy himself a copy so he could listen to it at his own pod. He even sent you a photo of the vinyl after he got it!
ꨄ︎ "Hey, look at this new group my brothers introduced me to! Do you know them? They sound really good."
ꨄ︎ As soon as you got that message, and looked at the vinyl record, you freaked out. You scared the shit out of your fellow members, who stared at you so confused and concerned; Even your make-up stylist was concerned. "Hey, hey! What's wrong?" One of them would asked, panickily rushing to your side. You were sure they thought that you just got a message of Floyd cheating on you with another guy. But nope, "He bought one of our vinyls! He knows about our music!" "Oh. you know I thought this would be more serious-" "THIS IS SERIOUS!"
ꨄ︎ You accidentality left Floyd on read for 10 minutes as you explained to the others that you had never told Floyd about your association with this group. You had never told him you sang, or you were apart of this big K-pop group that blew up globally and you weren't sure how to tell him and it's not like you want to tell him incase that somehow ruined your current relationship! It was a lot to confess, especially when you all were getting ready for a show. Your other members stared at you like you were a little mental for your line of reasoning. And maybe you were, but you didn't want to out yourself now! You've been keeping this up for 7 months!
ꨄ︎ That's when Floyd texted you again: "Hey, are you okay? I saw you read my message and you don't usually leave me on read. Unless something happened?"
ꨄ︎ And you had no choice but to respond! You couldn't leave him on read twice. "Hey, sorry something just came up. Yeah, I've heard of them they're pretty good."
ꨄ︎ "Did you really just call us good?" Your group was now peaking over your shoulder, silently reading the conversation to themselves as it played out. They had always been curious about you and this Floyd fellow, and now they understood why you never introduced them. "That's either really egotistical or just sad you think we're so bad." Commented one of them to your left, and you would have agreed with her in you weren't under a lot of pressure right now! "I don't know, I'm panicking!"
ꨄ︎ You somehow managed to get through that conversation without outing yourself, but you couldn't spare yourself from your groups disappointment about your actions; And, to be fair, you were disappointed in yourself. They would pull chairs around, forming a circle around you that kind of made you feel like you were in rehab, or in some sort of intervention. "You know you're going to have to tell him at some point, right?" They would point out, "You cannot possibly keep all of this a secret forever. I don't even know how you've managed to hid it from him for seven months!" You would only sigh, "I know! I know... I just don't know how to say it without sounding..." "Insane?", "Mental?", "Like you're a big fat lair?" "Okay rude- but yes!"
ꨄ︎ "Invite him to a show!" Was the agreement you had all came to, even thought it made you queasy even thinking about mixing your K-pop life with your personal life. You were so comfortable with Floyd and you didn't want to mess anything up; You also didn't want to accidentally out your relationship to your fans and cause some sort of havoc that had to be cleared up by your PR team. Nor did you want any of them to go to Floyd's way and do who knows what. But, knowing you also couldn't lie to him forever, you caved in and sent him the tickets in the mail along with a letter:
ꨄ︎ "Floyd! You have mail." JD called from the elevator as he came back into the bunker with mail. Everyone was gathered around in the kitchen, talking and slowly waking up; JD only dumped the pile of letters, party invites, and anything else that got stuck in mail onto the counter. He handed Floyd' letter to him personally, with a playful wiggle of the eyebrow. Confused, but a little intrigued, Floyd opened the envelope and read the letter, taking his time and not minding the peeping eyes of everyone around. His brothers, seemed to interested with this letter. "It's tickets?" Floyd mumbled when he reached the end of your letter, noticing the lipstick kiss on the bottom. His cheeks flushed a little, a dorky smile wobbling onto his lips before he coughed and tried to compose himself. He knew he would never hear the end of it from his brothers, who were already snickering! All but for Branch, "Tickets to what?" "Tickets to that band you introduced us to." Floyd mumbled, pulling out 7 VIP tickets to your next concert in Pop Village. Poppy nor Viva could contain their screams as soon as they saw the tickets!
ꨄ︎ Floyd texted you later in the day, thanking you for the tickets. Yet, just as you knew he would, he couldn't help but question where you got them (and if you bought them, how he would pay you back) and why there was only 7 and not 8 (where you not coming?). You could only text him back that he would understand during the concert; which was in a few days time.
ꨄ︎ And then you may or may not have ghosted him... Listen, you were completely freaking out about this new change. Even if it hadn't started yet, you had so much fear you half hoped that you ghosting Floyd would end in him thinking you hated him and he wouldn't come and you never will have to face with the consequences of your own actions. Wow, that actually not sounded so shitty thinking about it. "Oh hey, lover boy is here!" "WHAT?!"
ꨄ︎ Your plan didn't work, Floyd sort of figured everything out after hearing Poppy infodump about the group a day before the show. He was still a little iffy about his assumption that you were a member of this group, yet thought he might right. After all, it would explain a lot about your odd schedule and your recent ghosting. And while Floyd was sitting down, getting comfortable next to his brothers and the ever so excited Poppy, Viva, and surprisingly Clay and Branch, you were freaking out! The others literally kept having to splash water in your face to keep you from backing out, or maybe even passing out. You couldn't believe this was happening, you couldn't believe that he actually came, you couldn't believe- "Come on ladies, we need you on stage now!"
ꨄ︎ During the performance, you kept glancing over where Floyd and his brothers were, so nervous about his reaction. You saw, on several occasions, Viva and Poppy shouting and cheering, dancing with both Clay and Branch and between themselves. Bruce acted like any other dad that was brought to this concert because of his teenage daughter, and Floyd... Oh you were too nervous to get a good look at him. Yet, what you didn't see was that Floyd was your biggest supporter. He was shouted your name with the biggest smile, singing your lyrics (that he so didn't memorize since he got the tickets and even more so when he pieced things together).
ꨄ︎ He's so supportive! <3
ꨄ︎ He was slightly shocked when he first realized who you were, but quickly became your biggest fan! Literally ran to you after the show, couldn't hold himself back from pulling you into such a big hug. Literally was gushing over how amazing your performance was and he was so sorry he ever made you feel like you had to hide this from him. You had to reassure him it wasn't because of anything he did.
ꨄ︎ "Wha- Floyd no! I didn't keep this away from you because you were the problem!" You rushed how instantly as soon as you heart Floyd apologize. You couldn't even believe he would even begin to think that this was somehow his fault, when it was the opposite. "It.. it wasn't?" His look of confusion pulled at your heart so much. The way he pulled away from the hug for a moment, hands still on your shoulders, as he gave you a confused wide-eyed look. You cursed yourself for not telling him earlier! "No, of course not! I was-..." You paused for a moment, biting at the edge of your lip. You thought over your words carefully, "It was... nice to have someone who didn't know who I was. It felt like I could be, you know, normal around you. I didn't have to worry about being stage me because I could just be me!" "Oh..." Floyd seemed like he understood that feeling all too well. You stared at him, your eyebrows scrunching a little in confusion. "What?" "Why do you look like you know exactly what I'm talking about like you've experienced it before?" "Because I do!" Floyd would give you a small smile, "Back in my Brozone days-" "YOU WERE IN BROZONE?!"
ꨄ︎ Floyd may or may not have forgotten to mention he had been a member of BroZone; Whoops!

Thinking about how underrated the Foggy Swamp Tribe was in Avatar.
In the show they’re mostly played for laughs. They don’t wear pants, they have thick accents, they don’t seem to know much about the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. But they're a lot wiser than they're given credit for. Not to mention they're big dang heroes.
The Banyan-grove tree
Philosophically, the swamp is fascinating. Their home is centered around a banyan-grove tree, a cross between a mangrove and a banyan—two trees symbolizing life and death.
Mangrove trees are the nurseries of the ocean. Sea life migrates to mangrove forests to lay eggs in the protection of their murky root systems. Bato may look down on the swamp people and make a snide comment about them not wearing pants, but the swamp people are the stewards of ocean life.
Banyan trees are trees of death. The banyan is a parasitic plant that grows by latching onto another host plant, eventually choking the host to death. Banyan figs are also pollinated through death. Wasps crawl into the immature fig, lay their eggs, and die inside it.
So this tree needs death in order to live. And it can’t provide shelter and food for animals without the death of other animals. You can see how this cycle of life and death is reflected in their worldview—which is completely ride or die.
Everything is connected.
The first thing they do once the gaang stops attacking them is call them kin. They bring them home and treat them like family. And I think the swamp people really do see them that way.
They could have comfortably sat out the war. They didn’t. The war might not have affected them personally, but they still felt responsibility to help.
Death is an illusion.
They’re not even scared on the Day of Black Sun. They don’t seem afraid of death at all. They keep cat-gators as pets! For fun! Katara and Sokka are distraught by the visions of dead loved ones they see in the swamp gas. The swamp people live in the swamp gas all the time. Death is all around and they do. not. care. In fact, they embrace it, treat it like a normal, necessary part of life.
Sometimes I wonder what happened to the swamp people after the Day of Black Sun. They surrendered along with the other adults, buying the children time to flee. The swamp people have their own section in the crowd at Zuko’s coronation, so presumably they were released. But released from where? Were they locked in a prison for water benders like the horrific one Hama was imprisoned in? What happened to them in Legend of Korra when Kuvira harvested the banyan-grove’s vines? Where was their kin when they needed help?

wof headcanons but theyre oddly food and substance related for some reason
Although I understand why Tui didn't include very much info abt alchohol or drugs in a kids book there is an extreme lack of culinary related world building so here are some ideas I had while on this train of thought :)
SeaWings tend to be foodies and are generally given cooking classes in school. Which if you think about it, is rather important, because like 60 percent of the creatures in the ocean are poisonous and the rest have parasites and nasty germs so they need to know whats up when it comes to food safety.
SeaWings use a lot of citrus in their food and drinks and they also use it for fragrances and stuff they just really like it
SeaWing nobles commonly eat fugu and there have been assassinations where a chef was bribed to not properly take out the poison so the dragon eating it would die
SeaWings drink to taste. SkyWings drink to forget what century it is.
SkyWings typically eat their meat raw but on special occasions they will barbecue it and put some spices n stuff on it. They don't eat much else besides meat but they do like spicy things like peppers and they also like strong onion or garlic flavors. The little masochists. Anyway,
SkyWings don't really like sweet things and many of them can't even taste them so they're like wtf is a dessert
man do they love them some olives tho. Olives everywhere. In their drink. Out of the jar. On their meat. Oil on their scales. Oil in their hygiene products. They started trading them from the Sand and SeaWings millennia ago but theyve selectively bred ones that grow in the mountains
This one's more drugs than food but SkyWings will sometimes take some kind of stimulant before battle like a beserker so they're all fired up heheh
MudWings are excellent meal preparers and sibs like to all cook together so they'll make a big pot of stew or something
They like bread and desserts, they have easy access to sugar cane being along the east coast and they also use a lot of honey. They're re into canning stuff too, they have a lot of raspberries and blackberries and strawberries in their temperate forest areas and they grow them to make jam and wine and they use honey to make mead
basically they are Cottagecore(TM) and I love them
They also eat lots of freshwater fish and crawfish and whatnot
And they also eat a lot of tatoes
Vanilla grows in the swamps, they use that in their cakes
MudWings deserve some appreciation goddamnit their kingdom is biologically diverse and beautiful
SandWings have tequila because. Yknow. Cactus.
They eat a lot of bugs and lizards, they don't really need to eat every day so it's not a huge deal
they do like coconuts tho and they use coconut oil in a lot of their hygiene products as well as in their cooking
They deep fry a lot of shit. Idk where i got this but trust me. They love things with lots of fat in it bc they need all they can get
Really sticky sweet desserts and candy; enjoyers of those one lollipops with the mealworms or whatever tf in them
also canning stuff like bone broth is very important
pickled cactus as well
rhey probably have a festival when cactus fruit goes in season
what even is IceWing cuisine.
Well way up north where there's nothing but ice it's pretty bad and the dragons have to eat just plain ass meat and seafood, but down into the tundras there's some pretty good stuff like cinnamon, pines for tea, honey berries, and other foraging as well as more diversity of meats
They would probably eat sushi
All the other tribes like to make fun of them and rightfully so bc their food is so plain
they make good honey berry wine tho
Maube that's why theyre so damn grumpy
RainWings are expert foragers ofc but they don't really feel the need to prepare their food in any way
They are, however, in constant dire need of sodium because they get absolutely none from their fruit
So anything salty is wow
Maybe rhey have a place near the mud kingdom border where they can grow some asparagus for salt
they are also the only tribe besides Night that can eat chocolate but forgor 💀 how to make it so the NightWings and them have to re figure it out together
Salted dark chocolate bing bang boom instant delicacy
NightWings used to be able to cook really well, especially desserts and pastry, but they forgor while they were trying to not die on the volcano

Anyone saying the live adaptation of ATLA was bad, does not remember the series well and/or does not understand how adaptation from cartoon to live action has to function. Is it identical to the original? No. Should it be? No. It's called adaptation not remake/remaster, dummies. I loved shifting more of the Zuko/Iroh relationship earlier and to the forefront. Y'all do not remember Iroh well from season 1. His ass got a whole retcon/rewrite to gloss over the very anime trope of "gluttonous pervy old man" to "talented and emotional statesman who is playing a role". THAT is this Iroh, just from the start.
Is the series "darker"? Yes. Is it ANY different from the darkness of the original? Nope, we just freak out watching real people burn to death. Because yeah a FUCKTON of people burned to death and most of the characters are orphaned, lost one parent, or were traumatized by their parents (or all three Zuko you over achiever). If you just now realized that or disagree, go rewatch the series. The message was always "the world is bleak but the youth will always fight for a better one, so we should listen and help them". In what way was that altered?
Oh you didn't get to see the canyon crawlers or elephant seal riding?? Ooooh poor baby, you miss the filler arcs. Yup, they were fun episodes, but they were very much episodes about teaching little kids morality. That's not this show. It is clearly geared towards an older audience. I am rewatching the ATLA cartoon and I skimmed most of season one, watching it but doing other stuff, because it was a bunch of filler. And the live action literally name drops that those things happen!!!! They just do not have the time or inclination to make a shot-for-shot live action remake. Because that's not what this is. Again, ADAPTATION.
It is more blatant about the message now, and somehow y'all still missed it. It added more lore from the books, cooler fights, more spirit world, more relationship movement. All the things from the original, just moved up a season. Which, my sweet ding dongs, will mean MORE OF THE SEASON 2 AND 3 CAN BE DONE SHOT FOR SHOT. Starting emotional arcs sooner rather than later could mean we get more later, when there is less filler! We could get the swamp benders episode in full. We could get the entire wrestling match. Hama. Boiling Rock. EMBER ISLAND PLAYERS. We could get everything! Yeah I could be wrong, but I could be right. And isn't the god damn Jeezy creezy point of the show that it's not all bad? To find the good?
In closing, any adaptation that gives me this June, Azula, Kyoshi, and the hottest tribe ever (how is everyone on the water tribe so attractive?!?!?) is not bad in my eyes. The acting was great, bending was sick, writing was solid as the original (y'all don't remember how corny and dramatic the show was so you? EIP were there for a reason). Give this an honest chance. It's not the original, but it shouldn't be. Because we already have that, we don't need another.

A Precariously Stacked Pile of Random Season 2 Thoughts
These are notes I took as I watched the season. Usually after I’d already posted about the episode in question, and I thought of something I would have added to the post. Rather than edit them into my posts, I’m rounding them up and posting them all at once. As such, they are vaguely chronological. Unfortunately, because I made the notes legible to me and me only, I didn't bother to write down what episode I was referring to. I've also added some notes in as I was editing these notes. So this is also a bit of a scavenger hunt. Enjoy!
Iroh poisoning himself: dumbass moment or 5D chess?
My autocorrect corrects “Sokka” to Sock, and “Sokka’s” to socks. This causes double takes when editing.
Badgermoles have excellent eyeliner. Is that where the Kyoshi Warriors get their jaw dropping cat eye?
Why is Ty Lee spelled Ty Lee and not Tai Li? Why is Dai Li spelled Dai Li and not Dy Lee?
Sometimes Sokka makes me think of Mulan. Am I crazy?
Are the swampbenders’ moves based on a real martial art style too?
Why didn’t Aang use his swamp sense to locate Appa post-appanapping?
Where did Toph, who spent her whole life as a prisoner of her parents’ house and a moonlighting WWE wrestler until Team Avatar busted her out, get such emotional intelligence?
Why did Zuko’s dad put forward the plan to disinherit Iron in favour of him less than 24 hours after Lu Ten’s death? Why did he think that moving quickly was the right approach? Does the Fire Nation not do grieving periods? In what world was 'strike while the iron is hot' the correct course of action here?
Looking back, I’m amazed that season 2 didn’t end in Zuko’s redemption. I didn’t much like Zuko Alone, but I was sure that a season that included that much set up for a Zuko redemption arc would prioritise finishing that arc.
I haven’t even met this Firelord guy yet, but I am peeved that that twerp has a name as cool as Ozai.
Why haven't I met that Firelord guy yet?
I really thought that the older brother character in Zuko Alone would make an appearance later on in the season, giving Zuko a chance to flex some newly acquired morals. But the parallel to Lu Ten and the general message about the evils of war lands better if we never hear of him again.
Zuko in the first half of season 2 had me so annoyed that I was incredibly uncharitable to him in my write ups. Reading through some of the stuff I wrote while watching episodes, I kind of wince now. Zuko in the second half of the season was much less annoying. Which I feel bad for saying, because he’s clearly not in a good place in the second half of the season.
I would love to know why the writers decided to have Toph and Iroh meet in the wilderness. I think it’s a good choice, but I want to know how they came up with it, and why those characters? Is there anything about Toph (especially at that point, when we’ve known her for 1 episode) that suggests that she and Iroh should meet? Or would get along if they did?
Zuko has so many rock bottom fake outs this season: Zuko Alone? Nope, he gets worse in The Chase. The Chase? Nope, he gets worse in Bitter Work. Bitter Work? Nope, he gets worse in the finale.
I’m still peeved that Azula won a 6 on 1 showdown. Sorry, but that breaks immersion.
I bet the Blue Spirit could make lightning.
If water is the element of change, why does the Northern Water Tribe have such strictly defined traditions? I get that it's literally the element of change, in that water can exist in different physical states, but shouldn't the metaphorical interpretation also be true?
I like that Toph can think like an Airbender sooner than Aang can think like an earthbender.
What is Sokka’s boomerang made of? Is it metal? Because if it’s metal, does that mean that there’s a blacksmith somewhere in the South Pole? With a forge?
I still can’t get over how dumb the whole eclipse plot was.

I mocked this guy’s 80s aerobics video leotard aesthetic, and I stand by that mockery, because this guy is ugly. Those colours are awful. But do you know who else has those colours?

Jet this season fascinates me. He’s positioned as genuinely repentant and legitimately seeking a second chance and I don’t believe him for one minute. Why don’t I believe him? This show has a theme of learning from mistakes and doing better, so shouldn’t Jet be a perfect fit for this show’s themes? I should be primed to believe him. And yet I don’t.
I have to applaud Iron’s enthusiasm for their new life in Ba Sing Se. A lot of that cheer (at least before the tea shop) is put on for Zuko’s sake. I don’t know where Iroh gets the energy to keep trying with Zuko after years of minimal results, but I’m glad he does.
I think Aang and Ty Lee should hang out. They have similar circus energy. Or maybe it’s that they’re the only two characters in the show so far who are remotely playful.
Aang = surface silliness, core of calm. Not that the silliness doesn't run deep, but he seems to have an untouchable anchor of calm deep within that rarely gets disturbed. Gyatso raised him well.
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~Poetry bouncer ~~*~~*~~*~~*~~
I need next season to have more Appa & Mono subplots à la their escapades in The Swamp. Not à la Momo’s Tale.
Tales of Ba Sing Se definitive ranking: Momo Aang Sokka Zuko Iroh Katara & Toph
I love that Momo still sleeps in the Momo bag from The Blind Bandit
Are Suki and her warriors sitting in the middle of some Earth Kingdom forest in their underwear?
So are Smellerbee and Longshot just done? Will they be back in season 3? What happens to their life now? They are known associates of an enemy of the state who was just executed. It doesn't look good.
Everyone on this show has big ears. Zuko has the smallest ears simply because he has the least amount of ears remaining. But everyone else? Big ears.
Can I have more Gyatso? I forgot how cool he was. More Guru too please.
Hakodilf.
Everyone in the SWT has such wonderfully fluffy hair.
I like Sokka’s boots. Southern Water Tribe boots in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this is the grand total of the SWT, I have some bad news about population dynamics.
Is there a proper naval term for what the SWT are doing? They’re a stealth strike force that seems to be going after individual enemy ships, using both direct and indirect tactics. Not pirates, because as far as we know they aren't going for FN supplies. They're doing what submarines do, but above water. There’s got to be a proper name for that.
Is there a raft of FN corpses chilling in the waters in front of the NWT's big wall?
I saw ATLA described as a show where all the characters are Asian-inspired people of colour, but isn’t Suki a blue-eyed redhead?
I had no idea that you could decline an Agni Kai. Zuko should have done that.
Why are the Dai Li so in love with Azula? I get that they're pissed with Long Feng for getting arrested, but wouldn't the logical choice be to direct their loyalties to the Earth King rather than a wildcard princess? I'm not going to pretend for a minute that the Dai Li are loyal to the Earth Kingdom or to Ba Sing Se, but the Earth King is a known quantity. Seems to me that it would be easier for them to re-puppetify him, rather than a FN princess.
Katara & Zuko bonding over their missing mothers is the same “makes sense until you think about it for five seconds” as Song & Zuko bonding over losing their fathers to war. Technically the same, sort of, on paper, but actually kind of rude to equate them once you know the full story. Same with the parallel between Lu Ten and the older brother in Zuko Alone. The proper dead mom parallel is Katara and Jet. Although Katara doesn’t object to the Zuko comparison, so I have no grounds to do so.
I’m really glad that Katara didn’t remove Zuko’s scar with her spirit oasis water. Both because she kind of really needed that water, but also because one thing this show has always done right is permanence. No quick fixes, no fake outs, no take backs. Lu Ten is dead, and he stays that way. Princess Yue is the moon, and she stays that way. Half a dozen people’s moms are dead, and they stay that way. Aang is the last Airbender, and he stays that way. Zuko is scarred, and he stays that way. There are no hand waves, no easy fixes. All the characters can do is learn to live with it, and go forward. And I’m grateful the show is like that, because that permanence, as well as being a good lesson to learn, functions as a reward for audience investment.
Aang did come to a crossroads of destiny in the finale, chose his duties to the world over his friends, and got aggressively slapped down for it. I have a feeling that he’ll take the wrong lesson from that, since he was already inclined to shun that path.
Overall Season 1 was prettier.
Ty Lee was the cause of more than one Beat Up Sokka Quota fulfillment this season. Make of that what you will.
Will Zuko & Azula spend season 3 bouncing between the FN and Ba Sing Se? They could be heavily involved with establishing the FN governance over Ba Sing Se, since the city is already inclined towards royalty.
Favourite episode this season? The Guru. The Blind Bandit and The Swamp are tied for second place.

Hi, I love your work and was wondering if you've done a post breaking down Earth Kingdom clothing inspiration and what the pieces are called. I'm writing a fanfiction and having a hard time finding info. Thanks!
The thing about the Earth Kingdom is that it's the most populated and diverse of the four nations in-universe. Meaning that each area of the Earth Kingdom has its own unique flavor. Some places are based off of specific Chinese dynasties, others around the various ethnic minorities of China, and some are other Asian cultures entirely.
Tumblr media
Ba Sing Se's aesthetic is based off of the later years of China's Qing Dynasty (1636-1912):

Toph's family and background are meant to appear refined and wealthy so their look is based off of the later years of China's opulent Tang Dynasty (618-907):

Bumi likes to wear Chinese opera clothing and his character is broadly inspired by Lu Bu of the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280):

Kyoshi Island is Heian & Edo period Japan mixed with Ainu culture:

The tribes of the Si Wong Desert are North African crossed with Mongolian:

Chong and Lily (Secret Tunnel Hippies) wear Tibetan and Hmong clothing, respectively:

The refugee family with the pregnant wife is inspired by Yi people:

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 2 (tumblr.com)
And, with the exception of culturally isolated areas like Ba Sing Se/Si Wong Desert/Omashu/Kyoshi/Foggy Swamp, most men in the EK wear their hair in Taoist topknots:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Earth Kingdom Top Knots (tumblr.com)
So the sort of clothing your characters will be wearing in the EK depends on where in the country they are or are from. If you plan on inventing a new setting that takes place in the Earth Kingdom, try to choose a culture and period that reflects the mood or theme you're trying to get across.

stuff about the taz atla au:
Taako and Lup are the last surviving air nomads (and by extension, elves). Lup is the Avatar. I established Taako as an airbender but I think it could go either way; if he's a nonbender, he's still got the high-dex rogue-y vibes of an airbender for any fighting.
Barry is a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, and the one who finds the twins. He's extremely unnaturally gifted at bloodbending, but shit at most other waterbending until they find a master. (He can bloodbend when it's not the full moon, but usually only to shift someone's balance, shove a limb, etc. Can be very handy when used right, though!)
Lup's hardest element is water. She has the instinct to directly blast stuff, which pushes against the give-and-take nature of waterbending. Once she gets it she likes making huge, scary, ocean-like waves. She's progressively faster at learning earthbending and, of course, firebending comes easiest & becomes a favorite.
Lucretia is also water tribe, probably in the North, though I would love for her to be friends with Barry somehow. She may not be a bender, but she's for sure attuned to spirits, especially the moon. Possibly the whole North Pole spirit imbalance is because of some well-intentioned thing she does while they're trying to repel the fire nation.
Prince Kravitz is trying to capture the Avatar but the Avatar's brother keeps flirting with him and it's very confusing. I don't know if I want to make the Raven Queen be the Firelord but if she's anyone she might be Ursa.
Kravitz is accompanied by Davenport (tell me captain "haven't we earned a little wrath" davenport isn't a firebender), a family member or close advisor who has been secretly a traitor/spy for like a decade. He's mostly coming along to keep his own eye on the Avatar and make sure she doesn't get captured or killed. White Lotus member.
Merle is a swamp waterbender with plantbending and, to everyone's shock in a dire moment, healing powers. He was a good friend of Lup's 100 years ago. Also White Lotus.
Magnus is an earthbender, Julia is a Kyoshi warrior. "Why isn't Magnus the token nonbender" well you see this whole thing is an elaborate AU of that one stretch of SC where Taako learned fighting and Magnus learned wizarding (joke)
Magnus is desperate to interact with spirits but is not attuned to them at all. He's excited to meet Lup because she is obviously the bridge to him getting to pet spirit dogs. Might have a pet dog or bear fusion variant.

Pyrrhian religions
All Pyrrhian dragons have the Legend of the Scorching, on why dragons should be in charge over scavengers. Most Pyrrhian religions believe the tribe they're from is the first dragon tribe.
Mudwings:
In the beginning, there was no life on Pyrrhia, no rivers, no swamps, no mud even. One day, the First Sib Group came to Pyrrhia and their Bigwings used her talons to dig rivers into the land, she used her claws to press into the ground to create the lakes, creating the swamps and mud puddles of the Mud Kingdom. The second oldest sib designed the mountain range in the middle of Pyrrhia, the third sib designed the vast desert on the other side of the mountains, the fourth sib designed the Rainforest south of the swamps, the fifth sib designed the Bay of a thousand Scales above the swamps, the sixth sib created the frosty tundra on the northern peninsula. (the legend in Darkstalker's time talked about the seventh and youngest sib who designed the canyons and ravines of the southern peninsula). The sibs then brought out the creatures of Pyrrhia, the animals and the birds, and finally the scavengers and dragons who she put in charge of Pyrrhia.
Before the scorching, all dragons lived in groups of sibs the way the Mudwings do.
After the scorching, the first tribe were the Mudwings who lived in groups of sibs, as the first sib group taught. Then one day, some dragons became too attached to their kids and their breeding partners and ran with them to other parts of the world, where the mud washed off their bodies and changed them into other dragons.
While Skywing or Sandwing priests are picked from youth and specially taught, A Mudwing can choose priest as a job when they turn 6 and is trained for about two years before becoming an official priest. They do not have any special rules to follow, like not marrying, and they can be male or female. They're basically just some dragon who cleans the temple.
Mudwings believe that when a dragon dies, since the spirit has left, there is no point in preserving the body, so they just leave the body in a mud puddle for that specific purpose. Which is why the Mudwings left the bodies in the mud at the end of the first book.
Sandwings:
(I based this off of Octopath Traveler)
In the beginning there was only the desert and the night sky. The desert and sky eventually fell in love, and then gave birth to 8 more gods and goddesses: goddess of the sun; the god of healers; goddess of the dancers; goddess of prey and feasting; goddess of the merchants; god of learning; god of thievery; and the goddess of wars. The gods then created the different areas of Pyrrhia and the animals and dragons to live on Pyrrhia.
After the Scorching, there was only one tribe, made of a mix of colors and abilities. One day, a dragon discovered a dead scorpion mother and her babies. The dragon then raised the baby scorpions, and in gratitude, the scorpions told her the secrets of wisdom, which she then passed on to her children, and then she became the leader of the new Sandwing tribe.
The Sandwings have priests who are from noble families and are promised to the temple at birth. The priests must be from royal families The Priests cannot marry nor enter taverns. They live in the temple but can come and go and receive visitors. The priests are normally female but can be male.
There is a temple and priest for every city. The temples symbolically connect heaven and earth and is viewed as the home of the sun god, who gave the Sandwings the code of laws. There is a private room where the priests leave bread and wine as an offering to the gods, and an inner chamber where the gods live, of which only Queens and high priests can visit.  Sandwings play music and leave gifts outside the temples; the gifts are then used to feed the temple workers.
Skywings:
In the beginning there was only the Sky and the water, no land or life had inhabited the planet yet. Then one day, the Sky created the land of Pyrrhia. First, she created the mountain range in the middle of Pyrrhia, then she created the vast desert east of the range, then the swamps and marshes between the mountains and the sea, then the rainforest southeast of the mountains, the islands that make up the tail of Pyrrhia, and the icy northern peninsula (during Darkstalker's time, the legend says then finally, the Sky created the cliffs and valleys of the southern peninsula under the desert). Then the Sky created the fish and creatures in the seas and rivers, then the plants and animals across the land of Pyrrhia; the snakes and scorpions of the desert, the swamp birds and bugs of the marshes, the birds and sloths of the rainforest, the penguins and polar bears of the icy north, and the scavengers to live all over Pyrrhia.
The mountain range invited many animals to live in its peaks: the mountain lions and goats and the elegant birds of prey. She then observed the birds of prey and how clever they were. She turned the cleverest of these birds into dragons, the first of the dragons and the decedents of the modern Skywings.
(This part actually comes from @wof-reworked Skywing headcanons) After the scorching, many dragons strayed from the path of the Skywings. Some dragons fell too low into the mud and it coated their scales and dulled their minds, these dragons became the Mudwings. Some dragons became infatuated with scorpions and snakes, and it made them cruel and cunning, these dragons became the Sandwings. Some dragons swam into the sea, and stayed there so long they grew gills; these Dragons became the Seawings. Some dragons flew to the rainforest, with plentiful food, and stayed there until they became used to the easier life and got lazy, these dragons became the Rainwings. Some dragons flew to the icy north, which hardened their hearts and made them arrogant, these dragons became the Icewings. Some dragons flew too long under the moons, and it gave them unheard of, unnatural powers, these dragons became the Nightwings.
They have a priest, always female, who conducts religious rites. The priest is also a scholar, healer, teacher, and settles conflicts. The High priest, the head of the priest who lives in the Palace, is one of the highest authorities of the Sky Kingdom, second only to the Queen. The priests, unlike Sandwing priest, can get married. There is a priest for every town.
Skywings worship the sky. They leave their dead wrapped in a silk blanket on the top of an open mountain as an offering to the Sky for seven days, so their spirit reincarnate as Skywings instead of any other kind of dragon.
Seawings:
(This comes from Warrior Cats)
After the Scorching, the dragons at first lived together in small groups, instead of tribes. There were no boarders and the dragons fought constantly, it was a lawless, bloody time, and many dragons died.
One night, on the night of all three full moons, the dragons agreed to meet up on the Bay of a Thousand Scales. There was a terrible battle, and many dragons died. When the survivors awoke, they saw the spirits of their dead fellow dragons, who then told them to unite or die. The dragons united and became the first members of the Seawings.
There is one Seawing priest for every town. The priest is always female, and is picked by the previous priests. Any female Seawing over the age of 7 can choose to try out to be a priest and learns how to interpret signs from the Seawing spirits. The Seawing priest is highly respected and is not allowed to marry.
The Seawings believe that when a dragon dies, they go to live with the other dead Seawings in the Sea of the Stars (the night sky). If the Seawings are not remembered, they will disappear, so the Seawing temples make sure to keep remembrances for all the dead Seawings in the town.
Queen Coral told the Seawings to not eat the dolphins, as they are too closely related to Seawings.
Rainwings:
Rainwings have never had a creation myth or gods, but do have reference for Queen Jacaranda, who was queen 2,000 years ago.
Many moons ago, Rainwings were said to be as violent as the other tribes and fought for the throne by killing the previous queen, but then the Rainwings went through eight queens in one moon cycle. The ninth queen, Queen Jacaranda, then put a stop to the killing, saying that if we killed all the strongest smartest Rainwings, our tribe would fall apart, instead they had a series of competitions to become the next queen, such as treetop racing or camouflage
Queen Jacaranda then had a war with the Skywings and the Mudwings. The other tribes then burned down half the rainforest and killed half of the Rainwings. After this, Queen Jacaranda put a stop to the fighting and signed a peace treaty with the other tribes. She then taught her tribe to be less violent and gave them a new set of laws about not harming another dragon.
The laws are: Never use your venom on other dragons or animals. Do not steal any dragon's items. Do not tell a harmful lie. No Rainwing is above another, even the queen.
Rainwings do not have priests or temples like other tribes, but before the rotating queens, they had special Rainwings who were taught the stories and beliefs of Queen Jacaranda, like the bards of the Icewings. The rotating queens did not train any new Rainwing bards, so the stories were only remembered by the older Rainwings. Queen Glory is trying to bring back the Rainwing bards and their stories.
Icewings:
In the Beginning, the Great Ice Dragon created Pyrrhia and separated it into seven distinct areas, then she created the freshwater lakes and rivers for drinking, then she created the trees and plants, then she created the animals and placed them based on their environments, she created the scavengers and gave them the entire continent, finally, she created the dragons and gave them the best area, the frozen tundra of the north that would eventually become the Ice Kingdom. The Great Ice Dragon even gave the dragons the give of animus dragons, a dragon with rare but incredible magic that was passed down in a family. The animus was made by the Queen.
After the Scorching, all dragons were IceWings, but then one day, some of the IceWings were led astray by the Snow Monsters and were then chased out of the Ice Kingdom, eventually becoming the other dragon tribes, which is why some other tribes have animi, but the IceWings are the only ones to know how to use it. To keep her tribe safe, the first animus created the Great Ice Cliff, to keep the traitors out.
Icewings don't have priests, the temples are maintained by volunteers. They instead have bards, who are picked based on a dragon's memorizing and presenting skills and travel from village to village telling stories of the Great Ice Dragon and Icewing heroes.
Icewings worship the Great Ice Dragon and have temples for her. The temples have food so even a hungry dragon with no money can get fed. They also believe in Ice spirits, which are the ghosts of dead dragons who live in our world, invisible to dragons. They belief the Auroura borealis is the Ice Dragons frost breath. Icewings also believe in Snow monsters, who are evil spirits bent on harm.
Nightwings:
At first their was only the Three Moons: Oracle, the smallest, Perception, the brightest, and Imperial, the largest and wisest of the three. The Moons created Pyrrhia and the plants and animals on it. The Moons then created the scavengers and dragons, the scavengers lived in the day, and the dragons lived in the night.
After the Scorching, the Moons gave some of the dragons the gift of mindreading and future seeing. The Moons explained this was a special power that came from their light, so only eggs hatched under the full moons could receive their power. To remind them to thank the moons, as this is where their powers came from, the dragons were instructed to stay awake at night and hatch their eggs in the moonlight on top of the highest peaks.
Some dragons, however, decided to ignore the Moons and not praise them for their powers. To punish them, the Moons changed their sleep cycles so they would be awake during the day, causing them to loose their powers. The day dragons then ran away in shame to the rest of Pyrrhia, and became the other tribes.
Many Nightwing scholors believe the creation myth is exaggerated, at the very least.
Post-Darkstalker:
The only scroll the Nightwings had on the volcano about their old religion is "Tales of the Nightwings," which has more stories aside from Comet's tale about the Three Moons and the Nightwing heroes. The Nightwings spread this scroll all around Pyrrhia as Nightwing propaganda. This scroll became so popular that many non Nightwings on Pyrrhia use the expression "Three Moons!" The Nightwings themselves use this scroll as a study guide on old believes and stories for dragonets. They do teach their dragons the names of the Three Moons.
They did not have any priests or temples, as those would have been hard to build on the island.
Recently, Renewal has also found an island temple dedicated to the moons as well as one dedicated to the first librarians who wrote down the knowledge of the Nightwings.
Pre-Darkstalker:
The Nightwings in Darkstalker's time had some superstitious, such as the belief that Nightwing eggs must hatch in the moonlight on top of the highest peaks.
The Nightwings had more religious texts then just Tales of the Nightwings. They also had How the Moons Created Pyrrhia, Great Nightwing Heroes, and The Fantastical History of the Night Kingdom.
As the old Night Kingdom was small, they only had one temple, on an island, dedicated to both the Moons and the Nightwing heroes.
The priests were strong seers who would tell the future of the individual Nightwings. They would tell a Nightwing who to marry and which career path to choose. It was frowned upon to not follow the seer's visions.
Nightwings had a full moon festival, honoring the gifts of the Nightwing tribe. The Full Moon festival had traditional Nightwing music played by orchestras and also amateur musicians, and the mind readers reading the minds of the Nightwings and future seers seeing the future of the tribe.
Queen Vigilance build another island temple to honor the first librarians, as she believed that the dragons who risked their lives to write down the knowledge of the Nightwings should be honored as well as the Moons.

whats ur opinion on dragons having different houses bc of class or tribe? i love dragon architecture </3
I'm such a fan of dragon architecture oh my god. One of my biggest worldbuilding gripes (besides the lack of clarity around food/cooking) is that the actual housing arrangements of the dragons are so vague????? Like towns are a thing but also Tui seems to imply most dragons sleep in caves even though it makes no sense for any of the other tribes???? like ma'am most of your dragons live in swamps, jungles, or deserts where the hell are they even finding them
Basically, we have functionally no point of reference for anyone who isn't royalty (Winter, Turtle) or grew up in such specific circumstances that don't reflect back onto broader dragon society to the point where their input is rather moot (Moon, the DoD, Peril, Qibli). Qibli is the closest thing we have but the Scorpion Den is a combination of a shanty town and refugee camp that makes it harder to draw conclusions for the rest of the population. (We're also not counting Darkstalker bc. well. 2000 years)
For my writing, my stance is usually that dragons are primarily nomadic. Dragons who live in/around towns stay there primarily for reasons like child-raising, business, injury, apprenticeships, or just laying low/blending into a crowd. Like with how dragons don't need to cook their food to eat it, dragons are not dependent on housing and are able to comfortably sleep and live outside (barring extremes such as the central desert or really the entire Ice Kingdom). So, the exact permanence of a dragon's stay in town is situational and tribe/job-dependent more than anything else.
As far as the tribes go, Icewings and Nightwings are the most home/town oriented tribes- both tribes have the rarest approach to housing in that almost all members of both tribes live and sleep primarily in one home location that they return to for the majority of their life. For Icewings, this usually looks like multi-generational families that split off into new homes/houses only once there's a real need for it. On the other hand, Nightwings living on the volcano lived primarily together in caves/dormitories divided by age- even though this no longer exists, most Nightwing towns and houses involve many shared buildings and resemble something more like tight clumps of houses or caves.
For the majority of the tribes (Skywings, Sandwings, Mudwings, Rainwings), most dragons will have multiple houses that they move between as needed or wanted. While outliers exist, most dragons have at minimum two homes/dens: one in a more populated area that might operate as a job homebase or a place to receive guests, and a more isolated, private home that exists for the dragon in question to stash any items of importance or valuables, as well as eat and sleep. For more nomadic dragons, banks exist in towns to hold treasure, freeing up their secondary/non-work den to be little more than a shack or burrow with sleeping arrangements. More houses usually equals more money/class power, up to a certain point, where you start to see buildings more akin to Vulture's mansion or even the Royal Palaces, where one building or collection of buildings is large/grandiose enough to host other people's jobs and living spaces (on a related note, gardening is a very stereotypical high class hobby to have, as it shows both an abundance of leisure time and of space).
Between these tribes, Skywings are the most town and home oriented- Skywings often live primarily in towns and only leave for what is essentially a nesting den, as without rudimentary flight skills, Skywing towns are borderline unnavigable and occasionally hazardous for dragonets. Even with their relative isolation, nesting dens in the past have often been located near other nesting dens, creating something of a nesting village for Skywings parents to socialize and raise their hatchlings. Queen Scarlet's reign did irreparable damage to this style of collective child-rearing and nesting dens as a whole. With her breeding programs, most Skywings were forced into partnerships for the sole reason of producing more future Skywing soldiers, and the majority of eggs were instead stored in mass hatcheries until their hatching day.
On the other hand, Mudwings are the most isolated and nomadic, in part due to the structure of sib groups creating a situation where most Mudwings hatch into life with a social network already established. The Mud Kingdom is also temperate enough that housing isn't always necessary, and most Mudwings only congregate in towns for business or seeking a mate.
Finally, Seawings are almost entirely nomadic, and will usually move between a territory, with small dens and hoards scattered within. These territories can hold many multiple families, or they can exist for a single dragon- Seawing property laws are almost nonexistent and mostly maintained by honor and frequent patrolling of the territory to maintain order and mark it as lived space. These territories aren't uninhabited land either- Seawings will grow seaweed and herd schools of fish on their territory, and many take a certain landscaper-esque role, shaping the terrain into something aesthetically pleasing or useful to the inhabitant and helping signal to other Seawings that the land is occupied. One of the few times Seawings will settle in one den or space is for a hatching den- this lasts from the laying of the eggs until the hatchlings become able to swim well enough to keep up with their parents.
I've been pretty burnt out on WOF writing for a while, but this was honestly a refreshing change of pace from what I've been working on recently. Thanks for giving me an excuse to ramble about dragon housing !! I'd love to hear what other ppl think, the more headcanons the merrier :>

I love your mdzs avatar the last airbender au so so sooooo much!!! Do you have any thoughts on what kind of benders/nations the other mdzs characters might be? (Also your art is so wonderful in general I've loved everything you've posted for this fandom, thank you for sharing your art with us!)
I’m glad you like it!! ATLA and MDZS are some of my pieces of media, so I love being able to weave their worlds together. I struggled between whether to make Wei Wuxian an airbender or a firebender, and that really played into my world building for this AU. While I think the dynamic, kick & flip-heavy fire bending martial style (alongside their dress code) really fits Wei Wuxian, I decided to make wwx an airbender due to his carefree and fun-loving personality, and Baoshan Sanren being an airbender.
Backstory-wise, Baoshan Sanren is the leader of a small collective of remaining air nomads living secluded on a mountain. Air bender Cangse Sanren left to roam the world, and she eventually met Wei Changze, a water bender from the Jiang swamp tribe.
The Nie live in hostile mountainous regions and are earthbenders renowned for their extraordinary strength.
The Jin make up another part of the earth kingdom, and are specialty metal benders. They’re very affluent due to their weapons and jewelry trade. I like to headcanon the Mo clan being sand benders— for no actual reason. I just think sand bending is neat. If Wei Wuxian were to be reborn as Mo Xuanyu in this AU, that’d make him one of them.
The Lan are the equivalent of the northern water tribe; they live far north & are surrounded by snow and ice. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji are the first and second princes, respectively.
The Wen are the fire nation— as much as I didn’t want to fall into stereotypes, it just works too well. They literally live on a volcano & attack the other kingdoms in order to “share their wealth of knowledge”. They have the Jin crafting their metal tanks because Jin Guangshan is a power-hungry POS.
Additional points:
I like to think of Meng Yao as a really crafty non-bender; constantly underestimated because of his perceived weakness. He uses that against them.
Nie Huaisang is an earthbender. He just pretends he isn’t. All non-benders in the Nie clan are still extraordinary warriors— like the kyoshi warriors!
The Meishan Yu tribe are firebenders; lightning benders, to be exact. Madam Yu is a lightning bender. I’m as of yet undecided on whether Jiang Cheng's bending takes after his mother or father.
Jiang Yanli is a healer!! A really good one!!
Wen Ning is a non-bender, but a very good archer. Wen Qing uses lightning bending to defibrillate people.
Lan Qiren IS master pakku.
Wei Wuxian can see spirits!! He is a very spiritual boy!! Instead of inventing demonic cultivation, he invents spirit-bending and learns energy-bending from the lion turtles.
Blood bending is forbidden in the Lan Sect. Lan Wangji's mother was secluded for practicing blood bending.

u know what. im in the mood to piss ppl off. heres my ranking of the 10 strongest waterbenders in atla and lok (not including avatars, and im not including anything from kiyoshi or yangchen’s era. i havent read those hehe. sowwy. strictly going off the shows).
now im doing this bc waterbending is by FAR my fav form of bending. and in MY OPINION!!!!!,,, people overlook some pretty important facts and feats and decide based more on who their favs are. this is my opinion anyways so im sure i inevitably did that too! but anyways. here we go.
10 strongest waterbenders:
honorable mentions: kya- listen. she is my GIRL. and also she is very strong, but at the end of the day, shes a healer. she has very little combat experience, and she was up against some real monsters in tlok. and shes known to be a great healer, but we dont even see that much of that. for this reason, she cant be top 10:/. eska and desna- they are GOOD. and their synchronized waterbending is super interesting. unfortunately i just kinda think everyone else in the top 10 is stronger. and i feel like the reason they are so strong is because they’re a unit. if they were separated, i have doubts.
10. tonraq- right off the bat im wondering if im going off biases LOL. but i love him. i love his style of bending. he is arguably my fav waterbender to watch waterbend. but unfortunately, in most of his fights, he’s kindaaaa getting worked (im on s2 of lok rewatch now. so i may be forgetting some stuff. but the big fights that stick out for me are him vs unalaq where he gets worked and him vs zaheer and korra where again, he gets kinda worked.) very clearly strong, but does not have all that much to show for it in the show. but he fights with all the big shots for a reason, and he led the water tribe army or something like that. so. hes good.
9. huu- i honestly don’t remember a whole lot of him, but swamp style of water bending is super interesting, and he clearly does it the best. i know we dont see a whole lot of him, but i cant overlook that he is THEE swamp bender.
8. pakku- obv. hes a member of the white lotus and was the master waterbender of the northern tribe. a slayer for his time but i do think he is outclassed by most waterbenders we see in tlok. cannot deny his strength tho. he was the goat at one time for a reason!
7. hama- as far as we know, she is the first blood bender. aka the strongest aspect of waterbending. she is a LEGEND. but again, i think she was a master for her time, but would have trouble holding her own in modern day bending esp without a fully moon.
6. ming hua- the way she uses waterbending as an extension of herself is clearly masterful. and i feel like we never see anyone utilize waterbending anything like how she does. unfortunately, she cant be any higher bc we dont see any extraordinary sub-water feats (healing… i think???? don’t remember lol. bloodbending, spirit healing). but clearly, she was an insane threat to everyone around her.
5. unalaq- so like. MAYBE he should be 4, but i really hate him lol. but i cannot deny he is an EXCEPTIONAL waterbender and pretty much no other waterbender (that we see in s2) can even TOUCH him. hes got the spirit healing, and hes got the skill. somethin somethin vaatu vaatu. idk. i hate him and i dont rly like this season lol. moving on.
4. katara- ok. she was the best in atla. no ifs and or buts. HOWEVER. she gets outclassed in lok and i think we know why. BUT. she was a complete prodigy as soon as she started training with pakku. there was no extension of waterbending that she could not do. she clearly thrived learning waterbending how she did, in such a fast paced, high pressure, and high stakes situation, and thats not even HER PRIME! she was waterbending for under a year when we see her. and we still got the greatest waterbender of that time. there was no one like her, and no waterbender could hold a candle to her by the end of atla. and once again, was only 14. only waterbending for a year. whos doing it like my sis?!
3. tarrlok- unfortunately for katara, the bloodbending family, without a doubt, outdoes her. bloodbending without a full moon? done and done. sorry! i believe katara COULD bloodbend outside of a full moon given the extensive training tarrlok and noatak were given but unfortunately, we will never know, so i cannot in good conscience put her any higher than 4. tarrlok was a master waterbender in itself and pretty much a master blood bender.
2. yakone- he bloodbent. a whole courtroom. with his mind. we dont see anything else from him, and we really dont need to. sorry. it is what it is.
1. amon- he bloodbends with his mind. and learned to take away someone’s bending ability with blood bending. katara, the best healer in the world, could not restore korras bending. granted, she was probably going about it wrong, but the point is, she couldnt do it. taking away someones bending with bloodbending just takes the cake. that aside, even in a combat setting, when he wasnt even trying he was wooping on all other benders of all kinds bc he was controling their movements w his mind. imagine him openly using waterbending AND having his mind control technique?! he would be unstoppable. im ngl i dont love how lok handles waterbending/bloodbending in general. i kinda think they made it TOO strong with little reasoning). also we do see him do an awesome lil water tornado at the end. so. not that we needed that, but its a cute lil cherry on top to his waterbending. hes the strongest waterbender. sorry!
want to finish this by saying had katara learnt to bloodbend outside of a full moon, she would be number one. and i do believe she could have learned. but she didnt. so she cant be first.

Wolf Games - From the Wolves and Crocodiles activity book
"This is boring," a white Wolf named Windra muttered.
Worriz, resting against a nearby tree, said nothing.
Windra glared at him. "I said—this is BORING!"
Tumblr media
"I heard you the first time," Worriz snapped, "but we have to stay here.Cragger wants us to guard this pass to keep the Lions from getting at the weapons the Crocs have stored, so that's what we're going to do."
Windra stood up and stalked over to Worriz. She looked at him with suspicion in her eyes. "Is that the only reason we're here?" she hissed.
Worriz knew better than to lie to her. Windra could smell deceit a mile away. Though she was one of the prettiest Wolves in the pack, she was also one of the most vicious.
"Cragger says we move around too much," Worriz finally replied. "He never knows where we are. 'How am I supposed to beat the Lions and get the CHI if I can't count on you to be where I need you?' he says. So we're supposed to stay here and guard the Crocs' secret stash of weapons."
Windra's eyes narrowed. "Since when do we take orders from Crocodiles?" she sneered.
"Since we joined the Crocs in the battle for CHI," Worriz answered. Then he flashed a savage grin. "At least until we take the CHI from them. Now, come on. We need to check the bottom of the mountain to make sure there aren't any Lions sneaking about."
Windra Followed after him, though she wasn't happy about it. Staying in one place wasn't in her nature.
In fact, it wasn't in any Wolf's nature. This was the third day in a row that the Wolves had been stuck in this spot, and the entire pack was going crazy.
Tumblr media
A group of Wolves watched Worriz and Windra head down the mountain.
"I'm so bored," a Wolf groaned once they were out of earshot. "I don't know how much longer I can take this."
"Hey, l've got an idea." Another Wolf suddenly ran up alongside them. "Let's play Hide-and-Go-Howl!"
Everyone nodded eagerly. Hide-and-Go-Howl is the packs favorite game. The rules were simple, one Wolf was “it” and all the rest went and hid. (If there was one thing anyone knew about the wolves, is that they loved to hide.)
When a hidden wolf was found, he became “it” and had to howl to let everyone know.
Plus, it was nighttime. That meant they could play Hide-and-Go-Howl-in-the-Dark!
While Worriz and Windra were off scouting the rest of the Wolves quickly determined who would be "it." Then they ran off and hid while the "It" Wolf counted. Some darted behind trees. Others dug holes and jumped inside. One wolf even dove into a nearby creek.
"Ready or not, howl I come!" cried the "It" Wolf.
He began searching for the other members of the pack. Everyone was relieved to finally have something to do other than just stand around on the Crocs' orders.
Little did they know, they weren't the only ones enjoying themselves. A small group of Lions was hidden nearby, watching the game.
"Come on," whispered Laval, the Prince of the Lion Tribe. He grinned. "This is our chance, while the Wolves are busy playing!"
Under the cover of darkness, Laval led the Lions through the pass and right to where the Crocodiles were storing their weapons for their next attack. The Lions took as many as they could carry and slipped away again without being spotted.
Tumblr media
The next day, after Worriz and Windra had returned from checking the base of the mountain, Cragger came to visit the camp.
"Are my weapons safe?" he snarled.
"Of course," said Worriz. "When Wolves guard something, it stays safe!" The two went to see the cave where the spears and axes and swords had been stored. To their shock, they discovered that most of the weapons were gone!
"I thought I told you Wolves to stay here and protect these things!" Cragger cried.
Tumblr media
Just then, Winzar came bounding into the cave. "Ha! Found you! Now you're 'It!' Great hiding place, by the way."
Before Worriz or Cragger could respond, the Wolf scampered away, howling as he went.
While Worriz gathered the pack to reprimand them, Cragger went back to the swamp very, very angry. When he finally calmed down, he decided that maybe the Wolves just weren't meant to stay in one spot and be guards.
Maybe it would be better to let them go where they wanted and cause trouble for the Lions. At least then something productive would come out of their wandering.
He went back to the pass to tell Worriz the Wolves could leave... only to find they had already left. Off in the distance, the Crocodile heard a Wolf howling, "I'm 'It!' I'm 'It!' Howl I come!"
—————
This is the cutest the wolves have ever acted.

Little channeled message for the collective. This one’s really general, I didn’t pull any piles or anything I just let the cards come out so so take what resonates and leave what doesn’t, I love you! ❤️
***
collective is growing flawlessly. Great deal of you have broken a large amount of general curses and trudged through some deep waters for a really long time and came out on the other side unscathed and ready for better. I’m getting imagery of a bayou or a swamp, one with crocs in it or various other organisms that could attack you or become an issue if they really wanted to but there’s something about a select few of you that has made it to the other side protected, that has defied all odds, for those of you who are African American have ancestors who’ve passed away within the United States during the antebellum era who are watching you very closely and protecting you. Some of them are asking that you light candles for them or come and speak to them soon or connect with them or your roots. The color purple, orange, green, and red are significant. The color purple the movie could be significant as well, I wasn’t thinking that originally but that could be something you need to see or need to watch soon. You could be feeling nostalgic or be feeling a pull to the past, be interested in historical themes at the moment or be feeling pulled by a past version of yourself from a past life.
Those of you who are connected to your spirit guides or have had past life guided meditations done or awakenings, may need to revisit, or speak to your ancestors and spirit guides soon. Those of you who work with deities and gods and goddesses they wanna speak to you as they’ve been quite lately. Deep spiritual awakenings and enlightenment is on the horizon. The other side is calling. Answer. The number 22 is significant. Tap into your power, turn within. Rise. Some of you could be feeling a little primal lately or feeling very ambitious, driven, or aggressive. Spirit says they’re fueling you to go after your dreams. Especially if you’re African American, ancestors are pulling up with all their energy, they’re offering it to you, they said we wanna see you win. There’s a lot of pride here, there’s something very deep, ancestral and strong in the air right now. Spirit says we wanna see how special you are. Call your friend or reach out to someone apart of your soul tribe today or tonight or whenever you see this.
You know who I’m speaking of. Spirit says we want you stand tall in your decisions, don’t let anything knock you down, don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. Some of you have answers that we’re waiting on your arrival, you’re a generational curse breaker, the baton is in your hands. You’ve got people in your past who haven’t changed, who you’ve left behind or moved on from who want your attention, your forgiveness, and want access to you but you’ve left and opened up new doors. Something is in store for you in about one week. In one week a new part of your life begins or something important is about to happen. People adore you, past and present. You may be out of sight but you’re not out of mind and the people who are watching feel drawn to you. Some of you have met a new soulmate or divine counterpart as well whose in your energy and wants to spend more time with you and who thinks you’re the bees knees and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Good luck, and I love you. ❤️
