i think it is extremely weird that parts of this fandom have just definitively decided that the principle antagonist is an irredeemably evil monster because he has his minion burn down a brothel (where said antagonist was born and abused and watched his mother suffer and die) with people still inside it, then hires a bunch of sex workers to rape his rapist dad (who raped so many women that he lost track of who his victims were, and ended up approving of a marriage between said antagonist and his own half-sister as a result) to death

when the protagonist’s chosen means of killing the people who razed the only home he’s ever known and murdered his foster parents involves 1) choking a woman to death by forcing a table leg down her throat, 2) forcing that dead woman to bite off a man’s genitals, and 3) forcing that man to eat his own legs. this plus the protagonist’s multiple day-long murder-torture bender where he kills and tortures a bunch of other wen sect disciples in front of each other, and owns doing this because it was fun and would have been too boring to kill then quickly. like jiang cheng and lan wangji find wwx by following the trail of bodies he leaves in his wake ok, that’s pretty awful

if wei wuxian can do these things and and still be considered good, then that only makes it harder for me to understand why jin guangyao is denied goodness

fun fact: when i describe both of these characters to people who are totally canon-blind and know nothing about mdzs, cql, or any of the other adaptations, the initial response from most people isn’t “hmmm but what was the protagonist’s interiority while he was making that woman’s corpse eat that man’s junk? was he very sad about it? that will surely tell me whether his corpse desecration and autocannibalism is morally defensible or not.” most of the time what they say is “ray what the fuck are you reading, both of those guys sound like evil people, i don’t care what their motivations are! also get help”

it just seems weird!! that certain corners of this fandom have decided that goodness is not only a quality that wwx intrinsically possesses (something i don’t necessarily disagree with fwiw), but that he gets to be defined by this goodness above all else. wwx gets situated at the centre of all subsequent discourse as the moral lighthouse of the whole novel—even though he has done objectively heinous shit entirely to satisfy his own desire for vengeance. doing all of those things does not detract from his fundamental goodness, in their estimation. or if it does, it doesn’t detract enough to significantly impact his role for them as the goodness barometer in the novel.

and that’s fine with me actually! if this is where the bar for what it means to be good in this novel is set, then it should logically follow that jin guangyao’s heinous actions can similarly be ‘offset’ by paying the appropriate ‘goodness tax’ through his other canon actions (e.g., loving and remaining filial to his mother, saving and protecting lan xichen, saving nie mingjue, funding the rebuilding of the cloud recesses, caring for his orphaned nephew, etc). he has done yuckydisgusting things, yes, but so has wwx! and as we all know, wwx is not evil! so jgy isn’t evil either!

…but this isn’t what happens in these conversations, because jgy seems to begin all fandom discourse at a goodness deficit that is depressingly reflective of the goodness deficit he experiences in the novel post-canon. (or, honestly, at the beginning of his life as meng yao.) and unlike wwx whose character gets to be defined principally by his goodness in spite of his genuinely horrendous acts of violence, jin guangyao’s whole character becomes defined by his horrendous acts of violence in spite of his goodness, even though the text demonstrates clearly that their capacity for both good and evil is evenly matched.

tl;dr it would be nice if the goodness goalposts would stop moving around so much in these discussions. maybe we should just get rid of them entirely.

Here are my thoughts on mdzs avatar au:

wwx can do 2 elements bending: water-bending and earth-bending (water-bending from his father and earth-bending from his mother) and he is considered a prodigy and a genius for it. (but he's no avatar 😂, just an rare case)

JC takes after his mother's element so he does fire-bending, thus feeling alienated in a water-bending clan.

Jyl is a natural healer, her water-bending can heal even the deadliest wounds, but it leaves her significantly exhausted and almost sick. Even then she still manages to heal as often as she can.

The lans are air-benders, naturally.

I'll think of something for the rest of the characters when I feel like it.

Mdzs/the untamed x avatar au because I just got into the untamed - although, I’m not very far in so I don’t know the specifics and chronology of all that happens, and I’ve only watched the original avatar fully

Lan is Air, Jiang is Water, Jin is Earth, Nie is also Earth or maybe just specifically metal bending, and of course, Wen is Fire

Wwx is obviously the Avatar

I haven’t decided which element I want him to originate from, but let’s say it’s Fire, if only because his colours are red and black and he likes spicy food

No one knew he was the Avatar when he was born, because his parents were always travelling on their own, so there wasn’t any of the tests or anything

Then Jiang Fengmian brings wwx back to Yunmeng, and he starts learning along with Shijie and Jiang Cheng and discovers he can waterbend, which is entirely plausible because maybe one of his parents or ancestors was a waterbender? So they’re like ay he’s a waterbender

But for a while there’s no Avatar, and as Wen Ruohan becomes more and more tyrannical, everyone is like, where is the Avatar when we need them the most?? Let’s say the last Avatar’s original element was Earth, so they’re expecting the new Avatar to be from Wen or other Fire clans, so maybe people assume Ruohan is hiding them as his secret weapon, or have held them captive, or outright killed them

The different sects regularly invite guest disciples of other elements to their region because as Uncle Iroh said (not a direct quote), everything is connected, we can learn from each other, etc

So like they all go to the Cloud Recesses to learn their culture and forms and see how they can apply them to their own bending

And Wen Qing and Wen Ning don’t only come for the Yin Iron, because Ruohan still doesn’t know who the new Avatar is, and on the off-chance the new Avatar died unknown, the next one would be Air, hence coming to Gusu Lan to see if it’s any of them.

As wwx learns the ways of the Lan he accidentally airbends one day and uh. Shit, why can he do that?? So turns out he’s the new Avatar???? Surprise!! But luckily only a few people (who are on his side) saw it and agree to keep it a secret because revealing him would paint a giant fucking target on his back

Hehe Lan Zhan helps him with his air bending in secret which means more time for wangxian moments

Oh! And the Gusu Lan use musical instruments for their bending by manipulating the sound waves in the air? Or something?

And then I’m not too sure what happens here because I haven’t watched it yet in the untamed buuuut

Jiang Cheng losing his golden core is him losing his bending, wwx as the Avatar gives it back to him, but at the cost of severing his connection to Raava

So he can only use his bending by connecting with Vaatu - and people think he’s become a rogue/evil Avatar!!! Which I know people have always wondered about

And that slowly corrupts him and eventually people are like, the Avatar cannot be evil, we need to kill him and restart the cycle for the sake of the balance of the world

And then I haven’t quite figured out how Mo Xuanyu resurrects him into his body? Maybe we’ll stick with the whole ancient ritual thing and maybe it’s connected to Raava. I also don’t know what bender Mo Xuanyu is

Also at this point, no one knows which nation the next Avatar is coming from

Aaaaand,,,that’s as far as I got

Yearly Word Count: 120684

Well. This year’s writing was kind of awful word count wise. I’m amazed at how much was posted compared to total word count. Usually I have twice as much written as posted, but it feels pretty even this time around. I moved this year, which definitely impacted writing, but in general I’ve not felt like writing as much as I used to, which has led to far shorter daily word counts. I averaged about 330/day, where I’m usually closer to 500, but so it goes. Maybe next year will be better. Here’s to a new year.
