#Mans was accused of queerbaiting again

Note
People are commenting on how Harry’s whole persona and style feel extremely performative. Since his vogue cover he has not worn a dress either, so it seems very much like an act he put on to make more money, while never actually being interested in fashion like that. Also he’s never actually served any looks or dated a man so that could also be why ppl think he’s straight lol.
So I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt anon because english is not my first language but for me it sounds like you’re one of those people you’re talking about… Anyhow
Yes I saw the accusations about him queerbaiting. And to be honest with you I really really hate it. Not only because of Harry but also because of the massage that sends to all those baby queers who now think they have to act, dress or look a certain way to call themselves queer. Again:
The word queerbaiting came from fictional characters who often were invented from straight people who used to tease the queerness of said character as a marketing strategy to attract a wider audience for their show or movie even though in the end nothing queer ever happened to not make the homophobic part of the audience mad.
I don’t know how often it has to be said until it reaches every single brain out there but here we go again
A real person can’t queerbait.
Clothes don’t have a gender and don’t have a sexuality, there is no right way to look queer or straight. And there is no right or wrong way to dress queer.
Apart from that it’s totally normal to dress differently while being on stage then when you’re travelling/ at home/ in your comfort clothes. That fact has nothing to do with Harry’s interests in fashion. For real do you expect him to go on a train ride in one of his stage outfits? Not very comfy and not really clever if he doesn’t want to attract a bunch of fans.
Also, how do you know he never wore a dress since?
Everyone is so fast to judge as soon as it’s a celebrity often forgetting that they are humans too just like me and you. And humans have layers. Thousands of them. There is no way to know someone’s sexuality based on a different hairstyle and a few pictures.
And about your last point. Well you wrote an anonymous massage to a larry blog. So I think my opinion about if he ever dated men or not is pretty clear.

queer signalling: louis and harry living their beautiful queer lives, collected by me
since we must take note of our fellow queers when they signal that they are very much one of us, despite being closeted. since i've had a very very queer few years thanks to them, thanks to their signalling, thanks to them being brave.
(!! this list isn't exhaustive, and if i've forgotten your favorite, by all means let me know. there's always room for another edition. it's been a while since i made a compilation and felt there was a need of a new one on my blog. this one goes a few years back, since my last one dates from 2021 :'o. so yeah. here we go.)
harry in my policeman, playing a closeted queer man, based on the book that's long been one of his favorites. lauded by the director and co-stars for how well he portrayed this character, how well he understood.

louis's merch graphic where a boy is trying to smash a glass ceiling
harry posing for david hockney, actual living legend, gay artist of the ages. "Styles seems to know how lucky he is, adding, with a tinge of disbelief: “I’m in awe of the man with enough one-liners for a lifetime.” As to what those one-liners might be? My creations at the time were met with nothing but criticism for being “too feminine” or “costume”, teachers said I should focus on “menswear” or “womenswear”. l remember it really wasn’t until I started dressing for myself and who I was that it all clicked. @harrystyles was my first ever client who embraced the fun, fluid and expressive clothing I was creating."

I'm so happy to be a part of a fandom that's not overwhelming toxic, but some of y'all....
Like I'm sure you're meaning well, some of you probably young and new, but the constant targeting of Neil Gaiman and accusing him of not supporting the LGBTQA+ community and of queerbaiting is such bullshit.
"But when someone asked him if he supports the community he replied with 'guess'!!!"
bestie... I hate to break it to you, but clearly you have no fucking idea what you're talking about. So many of you have somehow taken that specific response of his as the exact opposite of what it actually was. Just do a simple Google search, go for it, search whatever you need to in order to uncover this biiiiig mystery of his stance on the community.
Hint: It's no mystery, he openly supports the community and represents us in his works in very beautiful ways, you just didn't care and wanted something to be upset about.
Want something real to be upset about? Go through his posts and read about the strikes, be mad with him for reasons that actually make sense. Stop hating on this man for your knee-jerk reactions to posts you’ve seen without context.
I hate to admit that I'm as pissed as I am about this, but I've been watching this happen for years and it's genuinely disheartening to see the exact same accusations be made over and over again.
Also, please for the love of someone, learn what queerbating actually is before insisting it's happening. I'll give another free hint because I'm feeling generous, it's not queerbating when the characters are the subject of a love story.
I'm not looking to argue with anyone, this is just something that's been frustrating me, like brother I could feel my blood pressure rising the more I thought about it, I had to say something for my own sake.

Matty Healy has found himself at the centre of controversy again as he took aim at Harry Styles during a recent interview.
The 1975 singer, who is the son of Loose Women star Denise Welch, is no stranger to making headlines, from making out with fans during concerts to mocking an Irish girl’s name in a viral video.
Now the musician has become the Twitter Main Character once again as social media erupts following comments Matty made about Grammy-winner Harry.
Speaking on The Adam Friedland Show podcast, Matty said the One Direction star, who has not labeled his sexuality, gets a ‘pass’ for ‘queerbaiting’ but he doesn’t know why.
He then added: ‘I don’t think the gays really like it. I think it’s young girls who think it’s a new thing who are like “Oh my God.”‘
‘Queerbaiting’ relates to a ploy most often seen in TV and films that aim to appeal to an LGBT+ audience by teasing, suggesting but never confirming, that a character or characters are queer.
The hosts suggested that gay men don’t care when a straight man pretends to be gay, describing it as ‘prancing around saying “Who wants to f*** my a**,’ and shockingly said it was as though Harry had ‘got the N-word pass from the gay community.’
Matty half-heartedly attempted to push back, saying ‘maybe it’s not all gay guys, but a lot of them,’ before the conversation moved on again.
The comments have caused uproar online, with even fans of The 1975 saying they were ‘disappointed’ by the comments and podcast as a whole, with some accusing him of homophobia.
Elsewhere on the podcast, the hosts and Matty mockingly discussed women’s periods, did impressions of Chinese accents and complained about ‘p***y drying up.’
One fan asked how the musician was ‘getting on stage every night and mocking toxic masculinity and then going on a podcast and undoing the whole thing by being wildly ignorant, misogynistic, homophobic, racist, everything else under the sun.’
Harry has not labeled his sexuality or gender identity, though he has only publicly been in relationships with women, and previously said he wasn’t using sexual ambiguity to be ‘more interesting’.
He later told Rolling Stone: ‘I think everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it.’
Matty, meanwhile, is not sexually attracted to men but kisses male fans at his concerts ‘men can be objectively beautiful,’ but he doesn’t ‘want to f*** them.’
In 2019, the Chocolate singer made out with a male fan on stage at a concert in Dubai, where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Matty says he was threatened with arrest for the act, but was able to jet off to Japan to continue his world tour.
He was criticised online for endangering the fan he kissed, admitting to The Sunday Times later he felt ‘pretty irresponsible’ at first but then went ‘f*** that’ as he wanted to ‘be an ally for people who don’t have a voice.’
Metro.co.uk has reached out to reps for Matty and podcast host Adam for comment

im gona say it once and never again. a guy is not queerbaiting just because he can admire and compliment another man. women do it all the time and uplift each other and feel secure in complimenting other woman, but if a man does it to another man you need to question his sexuality or accuse him of queerbaiting? im sorry but like-

Hey so I'm the anon from earlier with the long essay about the closeting thing and sorry I came across very angry but it wasnt directed at you as much as everyone in general who say queer celebs have a jollie good time in hollywood being queer and don't need beards because all's well in utopia and that frustrates me and I directed it at you which I shouldn't have
But I still stand by the general opinions I said and honestly, if you ask me about taylor, I am queer and when I hear her lyrics, I feel quite strongly that certain songs couldn't have been written unless she has experienced some deep longing for a woman. But what a lot of ppl seem to think is that just because she might be queer means she is a good person and that simply is not true. I mean look at Ellen DeGeneres. She is very gay and she is also an asshole. Taylor Swift, in my view, is very much an Ellen kinda queer
And her being queer doesn't erase her racism, her anti-Semitism, her white feminism none of it. I just think we can criticise her without saying she "queerbaits" because sexuality is not something that exists in a box like a costume that people can just try on. Sexuality is not a political thing, it's human nature. If you ask me, none of us are probably totally straight and I understand that there's a lot of heteronormative societal structures that prevent people from understanding this but when it comes down to biology, it's really as simple as that. That's why i do loathe the accusations being leveled these days at real people for queerbaiting because that's not the definition of queerbaiting nor has it ever been.
And I think if she chooses to be closeted, she is going to behave like a closeted, publicly straight artist like many others do. I also don't think she chooses to hide because she is afraid of discrimination but I think it's cos she is so attached to her fame and the attention she gets from dating men, she wouldn't sacrifice it by revealing certain truths about herself. She is too narcissistic for that imo
There's no shortage of problematic things taylor has done without needing to bring up the sexuality aspect that's all
Sorry this got long, I've had this on my mind for a while now
that very well could be true about her, but as long as she identifies as straight I’m going to also identify her as straight and I feel like it’s leaning into problematic territory not to. she could’ve felt something for a woman at some time in her life but still identifies as straight. I don’t think we’ll ever know and frankly it’s none of our business. all you should know is what she tells you, and she’s straight up told us that she’s straight in interviews. so no matter what she writes about, I’m not saying OR speculating that she could be anything else. I think that’s the biggest issue with saying not to speculate is that most people still speculate anyway to some degree, and it just needs to stop. you’re more than welcome to hear her music however you hear it and have the opinions you have. but as far as taylor specifically is concerned, she identifies as straight.
the way I view the queerbaiting situation with taylor specifically, is there’s taylor the person and Taylor™️ the brand. Taylor™️ the brand makes money. she can be whatever she wants in her personal life. the problem is when Taylor™️ the brand is putting out a song about herself with one or two throwaway lines that are either just ambiguous or are intentionally placed to make the song seem ambiguous and claims it’s a queer anthem, during pride month, and then never again is just straight up rainbow capitalism at best. but the songs she releases and only claims later they’re from the pov of a man when questioned if it’s about her expressing queer feelings because The Brand, that’s queerbaity to me. she seems fine letting fans praise her and hail her as a queer icon when it benefits her until it stands to affect her perception to her conservative fanbase, and then she tells the truth that’s it’s from the pov of a man. does this make sense? like things like that feel deliberate. there’s a couple she hasn’t spoken on to my knowledge, but for those specific two instances, it feels like rainbow capitalism and queerbaiting as Taylor™️ the brand that makes money off of people like gaylors who obsessed over her sexuality and “hints” she may be queer.
I can’t speak to other situations with other celebs, this is just my perspective on taylor specifically, and it’s totally okay if you disagree.

My brother is gay (he's 28) so I'm used to hanging out with him and his friendship circle. We live in Manchester. All of these guys except one have buzzcuts or very short hair and dress in a stereotypically masculine way. Only one has longish hair and none of them wear rings or nail varnish. What I'm saying is that Harry isn't conforming to British gay culture by looking fluffy and feminine like you claim he is. Look at this pic of London Pride if you don't believe me. All short hair.
https://images.app.goo.gl/KjDhq82Yus1Eo7sg9
Hi, anon!
I fully believe you! Again, i think some of you are misunderstanding the topic of conversation. I know that there are different subcultures of queer culture. Not every gay man has long hair and wear hotpants. But the general public does harbour some queer stereotypes that are yes, very outdated and many times untrue, but it still doesn't change the fact that these old stereotypes still exists in the general public. The more feminine looking and acting gay men are more easily clocked as gay, both by the general public and by the queer community. So these old stereotypes also still exists within the queer community. That's why Harry gets so many queerbaiter accusations from his own community when presenting a more straight looking image, because they go by old stereotypes. It's just how things are currently. In order to rid ourselves of and challenge these old stereotypes, more straight passing gay men needs to come out, and they need to get attention and exposure in the mainstream media.

I have never watched a single episode of iasip but i've been hearing about macdennis for years so i just have to ask. What's going on there? Is it entirely a fandom thing? Is it a queerbaiting situation? Will it actually happen? I can't tell and i need to know!
Anon I thank you deeply for this question the short answer is all of them and none of them all at once…
The long answer is that these are two canonically queer men who have been in a sexual relationship and has multiple episodes dedicated to their relationship where it is framed as romantic but have never kissed on screen.
The EVEN longer answer is
that Mac has been intentionally written as a gay man since s8 (aired in 2012) and came out of the closet in the s11 finale (2016), went back in for 6 episodes and came out fully midway through s12 (2017) in the legendary episode Hero or Hate Crime?, which was partly due to backlash from fans during the break about Mac not staying out. They also did a seminal episode ifor the s13 finale (2018) called Mac Finds His Pride where they break from their usual format and made a very emotional episode culminating in Mac doing a dramatic dance expressing his feelings as a gay catholic man who has daddy issues in front of a prison (it is almost guaranteed to make you cry). Whereas Dennis was clearly written as queer in the early seasons, (2005-9) but as the show went on he started being written more as a man who values himself partly bc of his ability to sleep with women and he sees them as conquests, a famous example is the s5 (2009) episode The D.E.N.N.I.S System wherein he reveals to the gang his meticulous system for winning a woman (ofc it is ridiculous and would never work). And in later seasons (12-14) became especially stringent in emphasising he was a straight man (partly in reaction to Mac coming out and being open about being gay for the first time in their lives). HOWEVER in the most recent season, s16 (2023) it was revealed that Dennis Also has a S.I.N.N.E.D system, which was designed to get men to sleep with you, he teaches this to Mac and Dee and when they ask why on earth he has a system for sleeping with men, that he says is guaranteed to work because it has been tested, he merely shushes them and proceeds, heavily implying that he IS a queer man and HAS slept with men before!! So. Now both of them are canonically queer. It is also worth mentioning that they have been roommates for 20+ years (with a years gap in between s12-13 when Dennis left to go to North Dakota to raise a son he had as a result of a one night stand and had been keeping secret from the gang for two years) and have consciously chosen to keep living together even when their apartment burnt down and they had to sleep at Dee’s for a year (Dennis’ twin sister), after which Mac fully rebuilds their place down to every last detail. Also in the sinned system episode I mentioned earlier (called Frank vs Russia if you’re curious) Dennis reveals at the end of the episode that he had been catfishing Mac the entire episode who thought he was in a relationship with a man named Johnny who communicated with him via anal beads up his ass controlled by an app on Dennis’ phone…. Mac says he is in love with this man!! They do not address it again for the rest of the season!!! As mentioned there are multiple episodes where they are portrayed as a couple, the most notable being Mac and Dennis Break Up a s5 (2009) episode where well they break up, and in the commentary from the time show creators Charlie Day and Rob McElenney (with the latter playing Mac) literally state that this is an episode about two gay men who are in love with each other break up because they have been accused of being codependent…… and that is exactly how it plays! Another is Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs, a s11 (2016) episode where they, well, move to suburbs and take on the roles of lonely housewife and frustrated husband in the spirit of a psychological horror movie from the 50s and Mac feeds Dennis dog.
The slightly shorter but still longish answer, the creators/actors have said on many occasions that all their characters are at least a little bit gay and have followed through with these two!! (especially Mac) There also have definitely been queer baiting techniques used in the past, etc posting a picture of the two of them in bed before the season airs (you’ve probably seen the meme it created tbh), but have never gone very far with that and mostly seems in good humour (note: that picture was posted by Megan Ganz, a writer on the show who joined in s11 (2016) and quickly became one of the main writers, and she is a known shipper of Macdennis, she had been watching the show for years before she started writing on it and it’s clear that she at least somewhat (but probably a whole lot) is on board with the ship). While I would never claim that the show doesn’t have faults and they haven’t fucked up things over the years when it comes to representation they have been pretty good at writing queer storylines and being respectful about it so I do have a level of trust in them!! There is also a Whole Host of other things I could mention in regards to simply how Mac and Dennis’ storyline makes the most sense when read as romantic (hell Mac openly had a crush on Dennis is s12-14, including dreaming that Dennis was going to kiss him and poisoning him so he could take care of Dennis!) and while I got back and forth constantly on whether I think Macdennis will actually become canon, I do genuinely think there is a good chance and currently we are at a moment where we have the best shot we’ve ever had of it succeeding!! Also to have a show that’s been running since 2005 have a genuine queer will they won’t they romance that has been building for 16 seasons would be a Momentous occasion and I cannot let that possibility go until either it happens or the show ends!! (Though hopefully we will not have a destiel situation on our hands, I’ve already had my brain broken in that particular way I would like a different way this time please)
In conclusion I did not expect to write Quite this much on this topic and hopefully some things have been cleared up for you, though they very much might not have….. but that’s what I get for writing about brain rot material in the middle of the night!! And the shortest answer to your question is Yes And No.

I totally understand people's frustration with the lack of Buddie interaction but let me just say one thing. If Kristen really disliked Buddie why open with such a beautiful family scene. The dim lighting, the lasagna, the roasting, the couch metaphor that has been in play since Taylor!!! Where is that couch by the way. Lucy better not being sitting where family game nights were held lol.
But seriously you could have just had Buddie in the locker room with a 3 sentence exchange "end scene".
None of us can promise they will be Canon but if I had my doubts it's not because of the beginning of the season. If I am actually being really honest if you asked me in S3 which one could have been gay I would have guessed Buck. Baby me then would never had guessed that in S6 I was more sure Eddie Diaz was queer and Buck may not be TBH. I only had that thought back then because that was actually my worst fear if they didn't go Canon. That one of them would end up with a man and the other with a women. I should probably see a therapist about that!!!
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for the lovely ask!
(Since I’m falling a bit behind on answering asks despite doing my best, with your permission, I’ll answer you and then two more Kristen asks in this post)
Yes, I fully agree. I was going to mention in this ask reply the lasagna scene as something that says that 911 obviously wants us to know they have not forgotten about Buddifer or are ignoring it, but I had so much to say, I ended up forgetting that bit, so thank you for adding it in! And you phrased it so well, too. Everything about that scene was very deliberate.
And yes, I’ve said it time and again, I can’t know that Buddie will go canon, I’m just out here, hoping for it and explaining why, based on the story as it’s been told so far, I can’t see another other satisfactory resolution for either Buck or Eddie (or for that matter, even Chris in terms of getting both of the people he sees at a certain point as his parents under one roof, as we’ve seen is his secret wish in 210).
As for Buck, I’ve always thought he oozed bi energy since 107 and his bonding with the gay vic. That was only reinforced along the way, and now we have stuff like Buck casually quoting gay anthems to Eddie like it’s nothing. I’m sorry, no matter who his partners end up being canonically by the time the show is over, there is no way that boy is straight. IDK if that helps you, but that is the one thing I will insist on. Queer Buck is real and deserves all the love.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! xoxox
You're so lovely, and I hope you're write about kr and 6b. In my opinion she's separating them cause she has no intention of doing buddie canon, but not to stop us from since she knows it's impossibile, but I think she's afraid of being accused of queerbaiting again from journalists. I mean she brought back Carla after 20 episodes to avoid buck being there, not to the dance, but just helping chris dress, and that scene with buck hen and denny? Like see he hangs out with all the 118 kids
Awwww, thank you so much for the kind words! You’re lovely, too! *hugs* As for Kristen... I don’t think she wants to stop us from shipping Buddie, she has stuff to gain from us shipping (Keeps the current viewership and gets a very active fandom that through online content is bringing in new viewers even during s6), and she can lose things if we stop shipping (she’s lose viewers, she’ll lose the active online fandom, and those fans who get frustrated and give up? They’ll accuse her of queerbaiting for sure). And yes, I do believe the 601 scene is a sign that’s not the direction Kristen means to follow. Am I right? We’ll get a better idea once 6b airs. Last season, 5b made it clear that the distance in 5a was not meant to tear Buddie apart, so I tend to believe that’s what we’ll have this year, too. But if s6 wraps up without Buddie coming back together, then I guess we’ll have an answer (not necessarily a definitive one. I've said before that you can’t judge a show on the issue of queerbaiting until it’s off the air, ‘coz as long as it’s on, the execs can always choose to change direction and make the same sex ship happen. This would be especially true in the case of 911, if Tim decides to step back in and change the course Kristen set).
I hope this helps? Sending hugs! xoxox
Hey! So I know you talked about this thing a lot but there's something that I don't understand about what kristen said about exploring other dynamics. What I don't understand is that yes we had some more hen/buck and chim/eddie scenes, but the only dynamic that was pratically absent from 6a was just buddie, we still got some hen/chim scenes. And while i get don't make them talk about the donor for now, I think they could still make some space for some buddie scenes, what do you think?
Hi Nonnie! You’re right, we did get some Hen & Chim. But TBH, Hen & Buck isn’t that new either, we just got a bit more of it than in previous seasons. Neither is Eddie & Carla that new. Carla was used in the past as well when they needed some stuff to happen away from Buck, like in 312 when it absolutely could NOT be Buck there when Eddie first meets Ana or you know our moron Diaz boy wouldn’t have even looked at her. And Carla was also used in 510, so that when Eddie announces he’s leaving, it came as a shock to Buck. None of that kept Buddie from being intense and domestic and there for each other in the long run. And the Chim & Eddie stuff we got this season was hardly substantial. It’s not like it feels as if these two are suddenly each other’s new besties. I think Kristen does wanna keep Buddie apart for a bit, and she uses other dynamics to solidify the sense of A TEAM, while also preparing us for Buddie coming back together in 6b. I could be wrong, of course, as I told the previous Nonnie! But that’s how the story telling so far this season feels to me. And I also wouldn’t take any interviews too seriously. Cast and show runners alike, when they do PR for their show, they have one job: to get you to keep watching. So they will say whatever they think will do that. If Kristen doesn’t wanna reveal her real 6b plans, but she does want us to be patient and wait for Buddie’s return in 6b, and she thinks that will best be served by saying she’s just exploring new dynamics, then that’s what she’ll say, whether it’s accurate or not.
Again, I hope this helped! Have a great day, all of you! And as always, here's my ask tag. xoxox

It Harry’s team didn’t push the straight man / female hetero sex dream agenda so much I don’t think he would get as many queer baiting accusations. I feel like he tries to offset the narrative when he can but it comes off as disingenuous to the masses because all of the evidence they’re fed shows the opposite. I also don’t think there would be such a desire for him to come out with his sexuality because right now he hints in some areas that he’s part of the queer community but again as far as the general public is concerned he is as straight as an arrow. We’re supposed to believe some things he says but not others and I think it’s confusing for fans and makes it seem like he’s trying to play all sides to remain as popular as possible. At the end of the day it must be a shit position for him to be in.
Yeah, it’s a mess and it’s been headed this way for a very long time. Most people outside of fandom are only going to read a few headlines and make up their mind about who he is. And those headlines are full of click bait gross headlines about queerbaiter womanizer Harry Styles. His team really have done themselves zero favors with what they’ve done to his image.

I was reading an article the other day which was published by one of the biggest lgbtq+ organizations and unfortunately I forgot which one but it was a recent article and it talked about how the lgbtq+ community has been hijacked by trolls and a vocal minority of people with extremist views (the same happened with BLM), and that the majority of lgbtq+ people just want equal rights and better representation. They're not trying to force people out the closet or force people to make a statement on their sexuality or going around accusing people of queerbaiting or cancelling everyone (unless it's politicians). They're pretty chill people who just want more support. I was thinking about this in reference to Harry. The majority of the queerbaiting comments I see come from trolls who use it as a go to insult if they don't like him for whatever reason, and the ones who aren't trolls are so entitled and willfully ignorant. If you present them with any evidence or facts (politely) they get so defensive and angry. They're so set on their views that they will never change, even if Harry comes out. Even if he publicly had a male partner and kids, I'm sure they'd still accuse him of queerbaiting! It bothers me but it seems to be a vocal minority and they won't have any impact on Harry's career. I agree with what you said, the majority of people seem to either think he is closeted or are skeptical about his sexuality. So I guess it is much better to think of the positive. His image has drastically changed over the years. Hopefully his team doesn't mess this up.
That sounds so interesting. I’d love to read the article if you ever come across it again, anon. It’s such a complicated issue, isn’t it? I love and welcome all forms of representation. We’ve come so far as a community and it’s still so amazing to get the opportunity to celebrate a public figure that feels safe and supported enough to come out.
But just last month, Lil Nas X spoke out against BET for failing to recognize Montero with any nominations. And we had JoJo Siwa not getting invited to the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards after she got a haircut some people consider too queer. I watched the newest episode of Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars today with Ben Platt as a guest judge. In Untucked (the after show), he spoke to the competing queens backstage about how challenging it’s been to navigate his career as a gay man who happens to be feminine because the industry still very much upholds these standards that “leading men” should be masc presenting in order to be considered for a role.
It really hurts me to see people use their (both Louis and Harry’s) closet as a way to vilify them. Some people take for granted that despite their privilege, they’re both in an industry that continues to work against them in a lot of ways.
But as you said, we should consider the positive because they really have come so far. There will always be that very loud minority, unfortunately, but we can continue to be loud with our support too. And whether out or not, I feel very strongly that they feel that support and it must mean the world.
Thank you for sharing. ❤️

oh boy... the way i've been too ill to answer messages all week and now diving into this...😩 i would be thrilled to never ever see a headline about this man again. would fall to my knees and rejoice if i could erase his name from my mind. alas.
so, of course, the most upsetting issue here is the oppressive and prejudiced government, and i admittedly know very little that i can speak of about the geopolitical situation in malayasia, so i'm going to defer to the people who are more aware, and who live there, commenting on this (and i read a bunch of discussion that was informative and distressing), as to WHY him doing this was not only obnoxious, but potentially causes additional harm to the very community he was... attempting to defend? i guess? his statement is rambling, inelegant, and vulgar (typical), he can't even try to address their cruelty towards the lgbtq+ community without using a slur (stop using the r-word, matthew!), and making the entire thing about himself, despite the fact that he's a straight rich white dude who can go right back to england without any repercussions, meanwhile the festival is cancelled and anyone working it is out of a job, he got money from his fans for a show that they didn't even fully play, and his performative edgelord "activism" has hurt the vulnerable people who actually have to live in and fight against the oppression in their country.
ALSO, very very absurd that he throws around accusations of queerbaiting at other artists but then pulls stunts like this. that make things worse for queer people. zero self-awareness whatsoever. he's exhausting and self-serving and i am just so sick of him.

Real People Cannot Queerbait: In Support of Kit Conner and Harry Styles
When the news about Kit Conner being outed came out a few days ago, I was angered just like many others. I'm not much older than Kit Conner myself and I can't imagine what it must be like to be outed like this so openly and publicly before you're ready. Young adulthood is so tumultuous and vulnerable and to have the autonomy over your sexual identity taken away from you simply because people couldn't mind their own business is such a terrible thing. As a straight, cis girl, I can't imagine what it must be like to be forced to out yourself like that on social media. I never want to speak over the LGBT community but as a staunch ally, there are certain things that I want to discuss.
For years I have seen the term "queerbaiting" thrown around, mainly in a real-world context and I've seen multiple celebrities accused of queerbaiting. I think it is very important right now, to acknowledge the fact that real people cannot queerbait (Queerbaiting - Wikipedia). Queerbaiting is a term that was meant to be applied to fictional media, not real life living breathing humans. The way a person dresses does not define their sexuality.
Celebrities deserve to have privacy too. Simply being in the public spotlight does not mean that you or anyone else is entitled to know about their private life. Even if you are part of the LGBTQ community, it does not give you, or anyone else, the right to speculate about someone's sexuality. A person who dresses or acts a certain way is not queerbaiting.
This applies to Harry Styles too. Harry is someone who has been in the public eye since the age of sixteen and he has thus grown up being watched very closely. His behavior and his style have changed the same way anyone's style would change over time. Tell me, do you still dress and act the same way you did at sixteen? I have seen some people say that he began wearing dresses and dressing femininely when he realized that "there was a market" for it but this could not be further from the truth. If anything, he has only grown comfortable in his own skin and feels like he is able to dress the way he wants to. Harry has said before "Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No." He's simply dressing how he wants to dress. This has nothing to do with his sexuality.
Furthermore, I find it crazy that people feel they are entitled to know what his sexuality is. How is it any of your business? What makes you think he owes it to you, a random stranger, to come out and label his sexuality for your satisfaction? The amount of self-important, nosy, indignation someone must feel to expect that from a celebrity is mindboggling. In addition, Harry Styles is someone who has hinted at not solely being attracted to women in multiple interviews. He even has an unreleased song called "Medicine" where he mentions both men and women (Harry Styles - Medicine (St Paul) - YouTube).
"The boys and the girls are in I mess around with them And I'm okay with it."
Also, just because he has only ever publicly dated women does not mean that his sexuality is any less valid. And once again, his dating history is no one's business but his.
Harry has never called himself a "queer icon" nor has he ever tried to act like he's the "first man to wear a dress". He's not the first man to wear a dress by any means. It is other people, mainly his younger fans, who love to attribute these sorts of embellishments to him. Is the fact that he gets credited like this his fault? No, this is not his fault, and he does not deserve to get hated on because of this.
I was talking to someone who called Harry Styles a "queerbaiting piece of shit" a few weeks ago. Because they are part of the community, they felt that they had the right to assess whether or not he was worthy of being considered it a part of it as well. This had angered me greatly because it made me want to say, "who are you to decide whether someone is queer or not?" When I met them again just yesterday, I brought up how real people cannot queerbait in relation to the Kit Conner situation and this time they talked about Harry Styles very differently, acting like they hadn't called him a "queerbaiter" just a few weeks earlier. "He doesn't owe it to anyone to label his sexuality," they said. While I obviously agree, it annoyed me so much that they wanted to act like they hadn't said what they'd said about him not too long ago. I am however glad that they realized the error of their ways and changed their mindset.
I hope the people who outed Kit Conner feel ashamed of themselves. I also do hope that they take the time to reflect on what they've done and how their internet bullying and "queerbaiting accusations" have had a such harmful effect on a teenage boy who was not ready to come out.
Learn to leave celebrities alone. They owe you nothing.

tell me more abt child star johnny storm!!
okay, I already answered the other anon that asked me about this but thank you for another opportunity to talk about my favorite flaming boy! Let's talk about Johnny Storm's compulsive heterosexuality!
Also I'm not dumb. Marvel will never make Johnny Storm canonically queer. They recently had the opportunity and the author that tried to hint at it more explictly has not written for them since. Comics have a tendency to create new queer characters but are hesitant to confirm anything about old ones and while I see the appeal of new characters, it's undeniable that the old ones have more cultural significance and can be very powerful representation. Unless comic readership changes drastically, Johnny Storm and Peter Parker will never be queer. This is not "proof" this is not an accusation of queerbait. This is an interpretation.
so for those that don't know compulsive heterosexuality is this phenomenon where gay people—because of societal pressure—convince themselves that they do feel heterosexual attraction. It's being sick to your stomach around people of the opposite gender and thinking "oh this is what people mean when they say they've got butterflies in their stomach." It's picking a person of the opposite gender that is unthreatening and convenient to date rather than how they look or if they have a nice personality. It's picking a boy at random because all the other girls are talking about their crush. It's having celebrity crushes on nonthreatening gnc people of the opposite gender that are so out of reach that you can't even conceptualize dating them. For example, my first comphet crush was on David tenant, a skinny flamboyant middle-aged man acting in my favorite tv show next to an actress that I found much more attractive but didn't have the words to describe that yet. Like my "crush" on Tenant went away the minute he wasn't next to Billie Piper or was several years younger or he wasn't in the Doctor costume.
So... Johnny Storm. So first off, Johnny is queer-coded to hell and back in the 60s comics. Which like he's literally flaming, the jokes write themselves. But he's consistently damseled, demasculinized, and mocked for caring about his appearance and vanity. And if you look at the early art of him kissing women, he always looks so uncomfortable and sure that could just be bad art except, no marvel comics did know how to draw kissing, Johnny just doesn't like it. But he's not gay! Look, he's a playboy and always has a girlfriend. But by comic book rules, he doesn't have a girlfriend because there isn't one girl he's constantly interested in especially in the early years. So there's no one to have relationship drama with and so to fill in the personal storyline, they play up his rivalry with Spider-Man. So textually Spider-Man is Johnny's love interest in the 60s. And then in the 70s Spider-Man has the Skip Westcott storyline and suddenly the human torch and Spider-Man team-ups are few and far between.
But Johnny does have named love interests. But the people he dates that stick around long enough to make a story out of are rarely below him in social status. Like he dates Medusa, the queen of the inhumans who is also married. Like she's the impossible perfect woman and they have nothing in common. He dates and marries Alicia Masters, Ben Grimms' long-term girlfriend whom he has known since he was a kid she's a very familiar person to him. Except no he doesn't because she's actually a skrull, a shape-shifting alien, and he's not that pissed that she's been lying to him. There's a beard couple metaphor in there somewhere. He also dates Namorita, an Atlantian princess that he has an on and off again thing with. The relationship is very public they're clearly using each other to get into the tabloids and annoy their exes. And then Johnny makes her a member of the fantastic four when he has to go dimension hopping I think he does this with another girl that doesn't have superpowers?? and he also does this with spider-man. So the people Johnny votes into the fantastic four are his girlfriends and Peter Parker. Like all his relationships are so public, they're a performance, an attention-seeking thing, and incredibly short-lived because he isn't interested in them and they're not interested in him.
And he has this thing with Akihiro, wolverine's son/clone??? Listen despite the fact that I'm gay, I really don't know that much about the x-men. The author of Dark Wolverine said that she was under the impression that they were dating in past stories. After Akihiro came back from the dead, she intentionally wrote sexual tension between them because what do you do when your boyfriend is back from the dead. So Johnny is written as a bi man, but the marvel statement is: no, he's straight. Although Akihiro is bi, is attracted to Johnny, has pheromones that can make people attracted to him, and he has used them in the past to intestate physical contact as well as real relationships. He either is not using his powers on Johnny or that is how Johnny acts around people he's attracted to, which is deeply concerned while emotionally unavailable.
And don't even get me started on his relationship with Peter Parker!! which is private and intimate and long-lasting which is in stark contrast to all of his romantic relationships. Like they have a special spot just for the two of them. And the only other people Peter has that with are MJ and Gwen Stacy, Johnny is that important to him. They have a roommate era where Johnny is in full housewife mode. He tells Peter to look after his family when he's gone because he's the only one he trusts to love and care for them like he does because Peter is his found family. They are constantly drawn in suggestive poses and scenarios. They're always saving each other both in a dynamic duo way but also in a damsel in distress way. Johnny asks Peter to watch his sex tape with him! When Peter uses a memory wipe spell to protect his secret identity (it's not like no way home) he reveals himself again to two people, Felicia Hardy and Johnny Storm who both have the same reaction: I knew I felt something about you but I couldn't place it until I saw your face and now it's all rushing back.
Johnny also has a thing for Dazzler briefly. Recently it's become a joke in marvel fandom that being a Dazzler Fan is code for homosexual because most of her named fans are queer and she's basically the marvel comics version of Lady Gaga. Like if you're a dude that has a crush on Lady Gaga, I'm not judging but you should be asking yourself some questions.

“back for a minute. i’m bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye,” the British actor wrote.
His declaration came following months of relentless speculation, discussion and obsession from fans around the actor’s sexuality.
Heartstopper premiered on Netflix earlier this year as a streaming adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novel of the same name. The series follows two boys in high school, Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Connor) as they fall in love and navigate friendships, coming out and questions of identity. The series was praised for its sweet and warm depictions of young love— particularly the exploration of Nick’s bisexuality—and for its diverse cast of queer and trans youth.
But until now, unlike many of his castmates, Connor hadn’t publicly identified his sexuality. And many fans seemed to take issue with that absent label, particularly when images of Connor holding hands with actress Maia Reficco circulated in September with suggestions that the actor was straight playing gay—despite bisexual people who date other genders definitely being real! Connor temporarily left Twitter due to the public scrutiny and accusations that he was “queerbaiting.”
Ultimately, this entire situation shows a fundamental flaw in our cultural expectation of what makes for “good” queer representation onscreen and off, and how we still have some work to do in its understanding of identity and representation.
What does queerbaiting mean?
The notion of queerbaiting is pretty nebulous these days, with fans quick to use it in reference to everything from Harry Styles’s magazine covers to Madonna’s TikTok.
But in its origin, queerbaiting was meant to describe a marketing technique, often for a piece of media, that hinted at queer content, but didn’t actually follow through. For fellow members of my very specific generation on Tumblr, the prime example is Supernatural, a show that teased a central gay relationship between Dean and Castial, but didn’t pay off until the series’ end. Or the BBC Sherlock series that features its fair share of longing glances between Watson and Holmes, but no actual acknowledgement of anything queer going on.
But it’s a lot more complicated when we start talking about real people. Were Queer Eye stars Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Porowski queerbaiting when they teased a new brand partnership with language and social media posts that hinted they were dating last month? Is a straight—or at least apparently straight—actor queerbaiting when they play a queer character?
To put it simply: no! A straight or straight-passing actor playing an openly queer character is not queerbaiting! It’s a whole different thing, and the fact that that term has continually been tossed around shows fans’ fundamental misunderstanding of what’s going on here. The entire situation with Connor highlights a reductive sense of identity politics when it comes to queer (or not) actors and the portrayal of queer characters. In 2022, it’s not as simple as queer actor playing queer = good, straight actor playing queer = bad.
When straight playing gay is okay
Yeah, there have been some pretty egregious examples of straight/cis (or apparently straight/cis) actors playing queer or trans characters (hi, Eddie Redmayne), but there are a slew of actors who are celebrated for playing queer despite all indications that they’re straight. Fans cheered when director Rian Johnson described Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc from the Knives Out films as being queer. And Cate Blanchett (who my partner described as being married to the most boring-looking man in the world) is garnering rave reviews and Oscars buzz for her climactic turn as a lesbian in Tár—just as she did a decade ago in Carol.
Those two know what they’re doing, have stated who they are and have also demonstrated a fondness and allyship to queer folks again and again (just look to Blanchett’s many interviews on the subject and Craig’s noted adoration of gay bars alongside wife and fellow frequent player of gay, Rachel Weisz).
“I will fight to the death for the right to suspend disbelief and play roles beyond my experience. I think reality television and all that that entails had an extraordinary impact, a profound impact on the way we view the creation of character,” Blanchett told the Hollywood Reporter in 2018.
Blanchett’s comments speak to the ideal world I and many others aspire to when it comes to representation in film: queer actors can play straight just as a bisexual actor can play gay or a straight actor can play bi, so long as they’re doing it right. I like to optimistically think we’ve moved past an era of queer people only getting cast (and paid) for queer roles.
But one key thing separating Criag and Blanchett from Connor is age. He’s 18. I don’t know about you, but when I was 18 I thought I was a very different person and used very different labels to describe myself than I do 10 years later. At that time in my life I leaned toward avoiding labels altogether, because I didn’t know which one quite fit.
One of the great things about the progress we’ve made as a culture in LGBTQ2S+ representation is how we don’t have to put people into neat boxes any more. Genders change. Sexualities change. The words we use to describe them and ourselves are constantly in flux. It’s an exciting time to be a young person, because ostensibly you don’t have to have all of the answers right away. You don’t have to “come out” as straight or gay or anything until you’re ready. It’s part of the reason young people are increasingly identifying as non-binary: why stick to one gender and box yourself in?
It’s the sort of utopia so many of our queer and trans ancestors who came before us have fought for. Or so it seems: what happened to Connor shows that fans haven’t moved as far forward as maybe we’ve hoped.
I ran a fandom Tumblr account for years, so I understand how important and meaningful it can feel for the person who made your favourite piece of media that reflects your identity to also reflect your identity themselves. But it’s more complicated than that, and we’ve got to remember that performers are real people—and in this case a young person just coming into adulthood with this huge spotlight on him. Give them time, give them grace and celebrate the fact that they get to figure this out on their own.
When they’re ready, they’ll tell us.
