warning: mildly nsfw implications under the cut
Mirabel: it’s almost time for dinner, has anyone seen Bruno?
Isabela: not lately. I think he may still be in town.
Abuela: still? He usually comes back in the early evening, at the latest.
Julieta: Dolores, do you hear him anywhere?
Dolores: (listens out/ her eyes widen a little and she blushes) don’t worry, he’s at Y/n’s house… and I don’t think we’ll have to wait up.
Pepa: (firmly presses her lips together to try and hide her smile)
Félix: (hides chuckle with a fake cough)
Mirabel: (kinda gets it & looks away)
Julieta: I’ll, uh… ahem- save some food for him for tomorrow.
Abuela: (considers inviting y/n over for dinner soon)

I've finished my contribution to @glitternightingale's Draw This in Your Style challenge! This was so much fun. It's my first time drawing Julieta, Agustín, Pepa, and Félix, so it's a learning experience. I'm especially happy with how Pepa's hair came out.

Julieta: Who would do that? Openly admit to loving one child more than the other.
Bruno: Any reasonable Tía or Tío.
Agustín: Oh, so you have a favourite?
Bruno: Of course I do.
Pepa: Well, who is it?
Bruno: Antonio.
Félix: …You said that very quickly.
Bruno: Because it didn’t require any thought.

Camilo Analysis
Bruh, who even is Camilo? He is arguably the Madrigal we get the least real characterization for, other than Teenage Boy, which is a very broad category of person. So as per usual, it helps me to get my thoughts in order if I write this stuff down.
First, Mirabel introduces Camilo through song and we right of way see him shapeshift into a young mother so he can sooth her baby while she takes a nap. That's actually a really great way to imply several things about his character (oh my god guys, this movie is so well written).
Thoughtful enough to offer a new mom a chance to rest
Comfortable caring for infants (probs helped care for Antonio?)
More patient than I would have thought, because taking care of a baby while the mother rests is not a quick and easy favor
Sort of implies that he likes kids
Then Mirabel sings he "won't stop until he makes you smile today" while he turns into multiple people and doing goofy stuff. Everybody already knows he's an entertainer at heart but I gotta add it to the list anyways.
5. Likes making people laugh
6. Plays around with his gift a lot
Moving on to Antonio's party, he's the guy greeting all the villagers by name, and he changes his energy to match each person.
7. Knows a lot of the villagers
8. Charming and personable
9. Respects his elders (kisses the old woman on the cheek)
He jokes around with Antonio, probably in an attempt to soothe his nerves, and teases his Pa. This reinforces points one, four, five and six. If this was a different list, I would talk about what it means that Camilo is clearly comfortable teasing his father, despite the seemingly stern reaction Félix has, but I digress.
He stands with Julieta while Antonio and Mirabel walk to the door, giving birth to a lot headcanons about them being especially close, and I'm going to roll with it.
10. Of his siblings, he's closest to Julieta.
Then he's very excited for Antonio as he discovers his room, it's actually the happiest we see him in the movie (other than perhaps when he's dancing in We Don't Talk About Bruno). So:
11. Supportive? Or maybe just enjoys seeing other people happy?
Plot happens, fast forward to breakfast when he pretends to be Dolores so he can get double the food. Then teases Isabela about Mariano, something he does a lot in the movie.
12. Likes food.
13. In his Little Shit era
Fast forward some more, all the way to We Don't Talk About Bruno. He absolutely kills it, and clearly enjoys the whole production. If you're like me and you headcanon that the musical numbers happen in universe then we can conclude:
13.5. Fucking loves living in a musical
And if you headcanon they don't:
14. Enjoys telling stories.
15. Probably hasn't thought through the consequences of telling everybody his Tío is a seven foot tall boogy man that feasts on screams. Which is very normal for a fifteen year old boy.
Teases Isabela about Mariano again. More plot happens. Time For Dinner. Dolores gossips to him as soon as she can, then he immediately gossips to his Pá. When Félix accidentally spits his drink onto Mariano, Camilo has to hold in a laugh. It's possible he doesn't really like Mariano, he keeps making jokes about the guy, at the very least he doesn't take him seriously. I wonder if he's the sort of guy that prefers to hang out with women?
16. Close to his sister.
17. Close to his father.
18. Shapeshifts reflexively/accidentally.
More plot. We see him try to soothe his mother.
19. Takes care of his Má. Pepa is literally unable to hide her emotions, so it would make sense that, through no real fault of her own, the kids slowly learn to take care of her as they grow up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and all. On the flip side, the fact that sun beams come out whenever they get home from school or learn a new skill probs means the kids can never doubt that Pepa loves them. Plus, she likely has the easiest time transitioning from a parent-child relationship to a parent-adult offspring relationship of all the adults. So Camilo might be growing closer to his Má as he gets closer to adulthood.
The longer the plot goes on the less we see him. He's clearly frustrated with his gift glitching on him, but that doesn't really tell me much. It's a situation that would frustrate anyone and they don't show us how he handles those negative emotions. They also don't show us how he handles hearing the end of Mirabel's and Abuela's argument. Rude. They do show us him leaping to the candle's aid while the house crashes down around him so clearly:
20. Sees the Miracle as more important than his own safety.
The house falls, the candle goes out, in the background we hear him first remark on his gift being gone, then wonder how this will effect his little brother. We already know he enjoys using his gift, I can theorize he's made Being a Shapeshifter an important part of his identity, but all we have that's concrete is:
21: He doesn't just enjoy his gift, it is important to him.
22. Empathetic.
Mirabel runs off, resolution happens, Mirabel comes back. He is the one who cuts through the reunion to point out their house is gone, and even gets a little exasperated when he catches a bit of flack from Félix.
23. Not an optimist. Might be a pessimist, but most likely just not particularly sentimental.
For the rest of the scene he exists in a state of confusion. The hits start coming and they don't stop coming. Apparently Tío Bruno is just suddenly back now? And it kind of seems like half the family isn't surprised or asking any questions?! There's not a lot of conclusions I can draw from him being shocked and confused that Bruno just sort of appeared out of nowhere, I think most people would be. And unlike the parents or the older cousins, he doesn't have enough memories from when Bruno was around to be swept up in the joy of seeing him again. His reaction is relatable and endearing, but not very revealing.
The last character moment we get is when he tries to twirl the shovel around all fancy, almost drops it, then checks to make sure Mirabel wasn't watching. It reinforces things already mentioned, like him being showy, and wanting to entertain those around him, but also:
24. Wants to be seen as cool. Another very normal trait for a teenage boy.
It is interesting that the first person he looks at is Mirabel, I can't help but wonder if that would have been the case at the beginning of the movie. There's room for interpretation there, but regardless, by the end of the movie:
25. Respects Mirabel's opinion.

Encantober Day 3: Reunion
“You can let go now.” Bruno squirmed uncomfortably in Pepa’s grasp.
“Ay, but I missed you so much, hermanito.” Pepa squeezed him more tightly. “Can’t I have this moment of joy?”
“Can’t- breathe-“ Bruno gasped out, fighting against Pepa.
“Easy, Pepa.” Julieta placed her hand on Pepa’s shoulder. “His eyes are starting to pop out of his head.”
Reluctantly, Pepa loosened her grip.
Relieved, Bruno took a deep breath, just as Julieta pounced on him.
“What do all of you have against breathing?” He griped, sinking limply into the hug.
“Brunito, we haven’t seen you in ten years.” Alma said, her eyes misty with tears. “Surely you understand.”
“I do, but you won’t get to see me much longer if you don’t let me breathe!” He finally managed to wriggle out of the hug.
Pepa and Julieta looked at him, hurt.
Bruno sighed. “Alright, come here.” He held his arms open. “Ah, one arm hugs. One arm hugs!” He put up his hands preemptively.
This time, his sisters were gentler with him.
Bruno closed his eyes contentedly, enjoying the hug. “It’s good to see you, guys. I missed you.”
“We missed you too.” Suddenly, Pepa pulled away from the hug. “Don’t you ever disappear on us like that again!” She smacked him in the arm.
Wincing, Bruno shook out his arm. “Easy, Pepa. Keep me in one piece.” He covered his mouth with his hand and turned towards Julieta. “I forgot how strong she was.”
Hearing that, Pepa scooped him up in his arms and twirled him around. “Strong enough to pick you up, and don’t you forget it!” Realizing something, she frowned, setting him down on the ground. “Bruno, you’re so light. Have you been eating?”
He shrugged. “I got enough food. Sometimes it was hard to sneak some from the kitchen because someone would always be in there, but I’d get the rats to grab me a few arepas to tide me over.”
“Rats-“ Julieta looked horrified then sighed, smiling contentedly. “It’s over now. You can eat as much as you’d like, and no more rats in my kitchen!”
“What about other animals?” Antonio piped up, eyes shining eagerly.
“Toñito, I think Parce might be bigger than the kitchen,” Félix pointed out with a chuckle.
Everyone laughed.
“Food actually sounds pretty good,” Bruno admitted. “I haven’t eaten since,” he put up a few fingers, counting, “no matter, I’m hungry!”
Camilo’s stomach grumbled in agreement. “Let’s eat!”
“Great idea, Milo.” Julieta nodded approvingly. “I can go get started on dinner.”
“We’ll join you,” Pepa said, joining her side.
Bruno looked between the two warily. “Uh, Pepa’s allowed in the kitchen now?”
Félix shook his head “no” at Bruno but stilled his motion at a glare from Pepa.
Bruno nodded. “So, uh, dinner!” He said brightly. “Let’s go!” He stopped walking when he noticed Camilo examining him through narrowed eyes. “Something wrong, Camilo?”
Camilo gave him a disappointed once over. “You’re so…short,” Camilo pronounced.
Bruno blinked, confused. “Thank you?”
“Camilo!” Pepa whirled on her son. “That’s so rude.”
“You called him short all the time,” Agustín pointed out, becoming the latest victim of her glare.
“That’s different. That’s sibling privilege,” Pepa countered. “Camilo, you can’t say things like that to your tío.”
“Why not? He’s so short.” Camilo blew his bangs out of his eyes. “I thought he’d be like seven feet tall!”
“Sorry to burst your bubble, kid. I’m not some kind of boogeyman. Just your regular, everyday tío with a pack of rats at his service.” He bowed with a flourish.
Dolores slid in alongside him. “About the rats…tío, now that you’re finally here…” She trailed off. “Not that you were ever really gone, I could hear you in the walls, you know,” she mentioned proudly as an aside.
Bruno chuckled. “I’m guessing you were the one responsible for the conveniently ‘forgotten’ food left in the kitchen?”
Dolores’ face assumed a guilty expression. “Guilty?” She glanced out of the corner of her eye towards Julieta, who wasn’t paying attention.
Bruno waved off her concern. “Hey, no sweat. You might’ve just saved my life with that, so thank you. So what’s up?”
“Well, since I could hear you in there…” Dolores brushed a strand of hair behind her ear nervously. “I heard some of your performances.” Her voice sounded more confident now. “And I am just dying to know what happens with José and María!”
“Oh.” Bruno appeared taken aback.
“Do they end up together? Or does Carmen break them up? What happens next? I need to know!” Dolores squealed, gripping his arm tightly.
“You really are your mother’s daughter, aren’t you?” Bruno shook his head good-naturedly. “Okay, so I don’t have all of it planned out yet, but here’s what I was thinking…”
They walked together as he narrated to her, his words punctuated by excited gasps and squeals.
Eventually, the family meandered inside. The kitchen became a whirlwind of activity, underscored by overlapping conversations. Finally, dinner was ready, and everyone took their places at the table, with Bruno at the head.
Next to him, Alma stood up, raising her glass. “To our family. May we never be separated again.”
Glasses clinked together at the first of many reunited Madrigal family dinners.

DT17 x Encanto AU
I already see some Ducktales x Encanto AUs and they were really good

♪ They say she saw the future, one day she disappeared ♪
It’s all canon. Della is gone. They don’t talk about her. The end.
Just kidding, I’ll tell you about her fate later
Beakley as Julieta or Agustín
Beakley is not bound to this family by blood, she entered it like Agustín, but not by marriage, but as an approximation.
I couldn’t choose one character, as I found it interesting that even without the gift Beakley would have the skills of cooking and «magic» to even be able to prepare healing food
Webby as Mirabel
Mirabel has no gift, and Webby is not tied to the McDuck family in blood, so she has no gift either. In fact, nobody even allowed such a thought, so they even didn’t try. I’d like to end the story with Webby’s becoming the new the Number One Dime the Miracle Candle’s keeper.
As far as their family ties are concerned, everything here remains like the cartoon, and does not change under the state of affairs in Encanto. Beakley is still Webby’s grandmother. Scrooge has just become the father of Della and Donald. Donald and Daisy are the parents of May and June. Dell is the mother of triplets.
It’s not that the relationship between Webby and Scrooge is that important. I love this storyline twist in dt17 and it can be in this au too, but I can’t say that it is absolutely necessary, it seems to be superfluous
The main character will be Webby. On the day of receiving gifts, May and June, born on the same day, were afraid to go alone and refused to do it without Webby.
Ugh, going all the way up to two doors knowing that she would never be a part of the family and get any gift... it must hurt
It was Webby who noticed how the house began to collapse, because there was discord in the family. With their quarrels, the gifts weaken. So she intended to help everyone.
Their main conflict was Della, or rather her disappearance. So the Webby began to reveal this secret.
She found a prophecy by which Della flew away and suffered a plane crash. Unlike Bruno, whose poor predictions were not believed, Della herself did not believe her predictions. She believed she had the right to change her fate with her gift.
I don’t really want to take a flight into space because a rocket crash is too much
Why did Scrooge cover it up and get angry at every mention of his daughter? Because he kept Della’s faith in the ability to change her destiny. But after the crash, he changed his mind. For this reason, he ignored Webby’s words about the destruction of the house because he had seen the prophecy about it, and he was convinced that fate cannot be changed.
Scrooge broke it. But Webby collected it and saw herself in the end against the background of the destruction of the house.
Webby loved her family so much, so she decided to go out on emotion to prevent it. But during the escape, Della caught her. She was quite alive, ha
Della had indeed crashed the plane, but she had survived with the loss of her leg. She lived inside the walls of the house, unwilling to return.
She gave an answer to Webby’s questions. It was not only Scrooge who looked at the prediction incomplete. Della dropped the memory first, splintered from it a small piece that did not allow one to look beyond the image of Webby. There was Della too. And just like Webby, she loves her family too, but she thought it’s better without her
Kinda similar, right?
It’s only then Webby realized how stupid and wrong they both are when they run away
They rerun Della’s gift and watch the entire memory to learn how to prevent it.
Della looked at the girl condescendingly, seeing herself in her, but allowed her to. Because if the outcome is predetermined, her efforts will not make it worse.
Webby really saw how she helped her family, in particular, the triplets who first quarrelled when they began to slowly discover the secret of Della.
At this time, Gosalyn as Mariano came to court with Dewey.
I don’t mind them as a couple, but I just want them to feel like friends in that au
Later, Webby extorted the confession that Dewey did not want to marry, he did not know if he loves Gosalyn in that way
So… Webby was trying to make up with everyone and she’s even doing it well until Scrooge told her that he didn’t see the good in her actions
How do those words of Abuela resemble those of Scrooge "you are not part of the family!"
And the house collapsed…
Webby escaped. Scrooge talked to her heart-in-heart. They found an understanding. Della jumped on the donkey, said it’s her fault, she had predicted it. Tearful reunion of father and daughter. Repair of the house. Webby is a new keeper.
The end :з

Camilo: So how did Tío Bruno get such a terrible reputation?

Encanto Ficlet: One Fear
Welp, horror and spooky stuff is difficult. I hope this is bearable 😭 Written for @wdtajn Week 2: Horror.
...
Bruno is straddling that fuzzy edge between slumber and wakefulness when he feels it. A squeezing sensation that undulates along his torso—starting at his hips, compressing his belly until it reaches his chest.
Tight, tight, tighter. In the dim light he chokes out a gasp and gives a jerk of his arm. The flailing limb whips up the quilt on his bed like a tent, sends the rats scattering. Suddenly, the awful pressure ceases. Going still, peaceful, Bruno soon tips back toward sleep. The last thing that catches his senses is the sharp bray of a donkey, coming from somewhere in the Encanto…
“Nngh,” Bruno groans. It’s morning. Or at least, time to get up.
He extracts himself from the tangle of blankets and rubs a palm over his face. “…Typical,” he mumbles when he prods the area around his ribs gingerly and doesn’t find the soreness he half-expects. It must’ve been some dream: some leaking vision, twisted into a nightmare. Nothing’s wrong. But he takes a handful of salt from the box beside his bed, and tosses it over his shoulder.
A rumble of his belly pushes away any further thoughts of whatever the dream was. Bruno springs up to get dressed and head downstairs.
It turns out he’s missed breakfast with the family. Casita has fallen completely silent. The kitchen and dining room are devoid their usual noises and laughter as Bruno shuffles about, making quick work of a plate of leftover ground beef and red beans over rice, with a bit of fried egg on top.
Juli must be in town already, Bruno thinks, climbing the stairs above the lifeless courtyard. He’s decided to grab a few things from his room before joining his sister and the others. Pepa might still be home, he realizes; the middle triplet had talked about having a day off.
A voice cuts through the quiet: “I thought I heard you!” Bruno sees Antonio rushing over. The boy barely gets in a hug when he pulls away with a harsh shout, as though burned. His eyes widen; Bruno watches tears form in them while Antonio stares, takes a step back, then another.
“¿T-tío Bruno? But… why? I don’t- No, no!”
“W-huh-wha—? What is it??” Bruno flaps his hands in distress. He tries to understand, to offer comfort, too, but Antonio is crying in earnest now, his small face fearful and disbelieving. With one final wail of No! Antonio runs in the direction of his mother’s bedroom.
A chill sweeps through Bruno’s gut, making him feel faintly ill for a passing second. The dream he had flickers across his mind, and he pushes down the chill, throws more salt and some sugar for good measure. He has to follow Antonio (his stomach clenches; this time from recalling the look on his sobrinito’s face), and hopes Pepa can help.
The air shifts, becoming damp and dense, crackling with electricity, the closer Bruno gets to Pepa and Félix’s room. He can hear sniffles within, and just as he’s reaching for the doorknob, the door flies open.
Pepa’s thunderclouds burst over their heads. “What the hell, Bruno?!”
The younger sibling flinches. “Peps!” He squeaks. “I-I-I don’t know! Wait, t-there was this dream—ah, no, it doesn’t matter. I-I just. Didn’t mean to make Toñito cry!”
“Then what. Happened.” Pepa delivers two good pokes to Bruno’s waist, followed by a sharp, shocked gasp and a blast of frigid wind as she recoils, yanking her hands to her chest.
She breathes, “Dios.” It starts to snow. “Oh. Oh. Brunito. ¿Qué? No… We need… Julieta—Does she know?!”
Bruno feels that chill again, and this time, he allows himself to shudder.
“What is going on?” He asks, voice coming out steadier than he feels.
His sister responds by taking him by the hand and tugging him into her room, where Antonio is seated on the bed with his knees drawn up and tucked beneath his chin.
“…You haven't noticed?”
“Clearly not," he deadpans as he's positioned in front of the full length mirror.
“Mira,” Pepa says cautiously. She gestures at his shirt before moving back to sit next to her son.
Bruno sighs, and starts undoing the buttons there. As his shirt falls open, he sucks in a breath. Oh, no.
Where his belly should be, fattened over time and from many healing meals—
He shivers, squeezes his eyes shut.
It’s worse than he could’ve imagined...
—A firm plane of sculpted muscle.

Mamá Julieta AU
An AU where Julieta (and Agustín) take care and basically adopt the warm kids as well!
Enjoy!
While Julieta and Agustín were happy to be parents, Pepa and Félix weren't.
The yellow couple, especially Pepa, would complain and complain about having to actually take care of Dolores, and even left the baby whenever it's convenient for them.
That left Julieta and Agustín taking care of both Isabela and Dolores.. Not that they're complaining, but they (and Alma) did call out Pepa and Félix for neglecting their daughter. Unfortunately, the yellow couple didn't care.
But strangely, after Isabela's and Dolores' ceremonies, Pepa and Félix suddenly started to pay attention to Isabela, calling her their princess and angel and calling her the daughter they never had.
5 year old Isabela felt quite uncomfortable about this, and distanced herself from her Tía and Tío, as well as her Abuela.
But Alma and Pepa wouldn't let that happen, and tried to steer Isabela away from Julieta and Agustín.
That again, was a failure, as Isa distanced herself from them.
Julieta and Agustín called Alma and Pepa on their behavior out yet again, but that didn't help.
Once Camilo was born and Pepa and Félix refused to take care of him as well, did the blue couple give up, and cared for their nephew as well.
Julieta and Agustín were raising 5 kids now, and while it was hard, they didn't want it any other way.
But things got tense again after Mirabel's failed ceremony...
"It would be best for the family if you just give that girl away, Julieta." Pepa said to her sister. "She will only be a burden for us anyways."
But Julieta absolutely refused that, and yelled at her sister for even thinking about that.
After some discussion, Mirabel would move into Luisa's room. Julieta and Agustín didn't want their daughter to stay in the nursery any longer.
As time passed, all 5 of the Madrigal kids were happy, spending time with the blue couple, who Dolores and Camilo saw as their real parents.
When Antonio was born, Julieta and Agustín cared for him as well after Pepa and Félix didn't want to again.
The blue family couldn't be happier, feeling that their family was complete with 6 kids.

Sooo tomorrow is Encanto fools day, launched by @hectic-hector and I decided to post something for the day!
Tomorrow I'll also post a fanart! But until now, here is a ficlet you can also find here on Ao3!
Fluff/attempt at humor/arguing/pranks
931 words
Couldn't find anyone to proofread it so it's not proofread.
Who did the prank?
Summary:
Mirabel got down the stairs to find Camilo surrounded by his parents, her parents, Isabela and their Abuela Alma. Feeling curious, she approached to hear him whining, “I did nothing! I swear!”
Another day was starting at Casa Madrigal. Mirabel got down the stairs to find Camilo surrounded by his parents, her parents, Isabela and their Abuela Alma. Feeling curious, she approached to hear him whining, “I did nothing! I swear!”
Julieta sighed, counterarguing with sadness, “It can hardly be anyone else though.”
“But I didn’t! I didn’t have time to do any of my April’s fools jokes!” Then, pouting a bit, he admitted, ”I wanted to hide the oil so you would have to look for it all around Casita! But, when I arrived, you were already pranked.”
Julieta looked sceptical, but didn’t reply anything. She mused on it, locking eyes with the other Madrigals as if looking for their opinion.
Mirabel felt so bad for Camilo! She knew he wouldn’t deny any of his pranks. The boy was always happy to let people know they had been pranked! In order to help him, she asked as she stopped just beside her cousin, “Can’t it be someone else?”
To which, Julieta replied with embarrassment, “He was the only one up when I came down to cook, and I noticed the switch right away.”
“I’m innocent!” insisted Camilo, keeping whining.
While she was trying to find a way to help his cousin out of this situation, Félix noted with a thoughtful look, "It's possible it really wasn't him. He isn't the only naughty one in the family and some of us have distance gifts."
He pointed at Isabela to mean she was another possibility. As she followed his finger, Mirabel finally noticed her sister was busy removing googly eyes from the leaves on her dress, her face scrunched in frustration. Not bothering looking up at them, she brushed it off by claiming, "I would have loved to have done it, but I unfortunately didn’t think about it.”
"It's not me though!" argued Camilo.
"And you’re not the one who put these things on my plants either, I guess?” she growled, finally looking at him with suspicion.
He denied, shocked, “No! Again, I didn’t have time to do any prank!” Then, doing his best to manage a smile, he remarked, “One of them could have been made by Tío Bruno! He proved he can be pretty sneaky when he wants to."
Bruno arrived just at that moment, getting down the stairs with a confused look. WIth his messy hair, his tired eyes and his lack of energy, he looked like he just woke up. “Huh? What’s happening?”
“Bruno! Did you switch the salt and the sugar?” Pepa asked him bluntly. “Or put googly eyes on-”
“Someone switched the salt and the sugar?” he replied, suddenly worried.
He started looking in his pockets, while Félix added, “I also woke up with a streak of my hair dyed.” He pointed at his head, which was bearing a red section of hair, before keeping going, glancing at Camilo, “I immediately thought it could be Isabela since she has her way to do so but it honestly could be someone else.”
“It’s not me either!” denied Camilo, clearly frustrated.
“And I didn’t dye it,” shrugged Isabela. “Could be Tía Pepa, she sleeps beside you.”
He turned to his wife at the argument, admitting, “Good point! Amor, did you-”
Pepa started to thunder, complaining, “What? No! You really think I’d use that position to prank you?”
He joked, “Well, I wouldn’t mind if it had been you!” Then, turning to others with confusion, he asked, “Who is it then?”
Before any of them could reply anything, Bruno beat them to it by complaining, “Someone strapped weird hats on my rats’ heads.”
The rat he was holding was wearing a funny banana hat, which it was trying to remove by shaking its head. Bruno was helping it, glancing nervously at another one with a capybara head hat on his shoulder. Mirabel hurried to help him, though she was holding back a laugh.
Sighing, Pepa revealed, "I've been pranked too anyway. Someone moved my dresser on the other side of my room. I thought it was you, Félix."
"Mi amor! I'm so happy you think I'm strong enough to do that alone," he laughed, genuine. Then, in a more curious tone, he asked, "Someone pranked you?"
She nodded. Then, she turned to Isabela. "Now that I think of it, your plants are strong enough to move them.”
“I did nothing!” claimed Isabela, before explaining with a sigh, “I wanted to wrap Mirabel’s room with wrapping paper but I hadn’t got time to do so.”
Between shock and laughter, Mirabel exclaimed, “You wanted to wrap my room?”
“Yeah...It would have been so fun...” Isabela said, saddened.
“Well, if it’s not you then who is it? Can’t be that many people who are strong enough for that.”
"Luisa would be," remarked Camilo.
Mirabel saw her Abuela visibly worrying, before easing when Pepa discarded it. "No way! That girl would never prank anyone."
While the family kept arguing, accusing one another of the bad deed, Mirabel got closer to her to whisper, “Abuela, did Luisa do it?”
Alma nodded, confessing in a low voice, “We did it together, she and I.”
Then, she put a finger on her lips to signal her to keep quiet. She seemed to have a lot of fun watching her family looking for the trickster. Mirabel couldn’t blame her for that! It was great to see her family actually communicating after all they went through. Why she decided to stay on the side, watching the scene with her abuela, both of them enjoying themselves watching their family arguing.

I feel you on the burnout. I think I'm there too.
Crack idea: The rats actually go to confession.
The slightly less crack idea: The family trying to organize all of the animal friends that live in Casita for the Feast of Saint Francis (I've been doing research!)
Rat confession rat confession rat confession!

“This is Nodgraedxil-”
Bruno blinked and shook his head. “No, no, that’s Jorge Junior, because of that time he got a thimble stuck on his head when he was a baby.”
“Tío.” The tone in Antonio’s voice was far too close to the disappointed-and-exasperated one Félix used sometimes. “That’s not his real name. And he says you promised not to tell anyone about that again, was that a lie?”
“...technically, I guess?” Bruno looked helplessly at José, who shrugged.
“I’ll put it on your tab,” the priest muttered, then leaned down to get a closer look at the rat in Antonio’s hands. To his credit he kept his expression neutral; Bruno knew he was not convinced of the little creatures’ charms, which made him agreeing to do this an act of professional courtesy. “And what does, uh, Nadgerd-”
“Nodgraedxil.”
“-have to confess?”
After ruling out the confessional itself they’d opted to do this in the little chapel off the main altar, as it offered both privacy and an appropriate level of formality for the proceedings. Bruno perched on the edge of a pew, José - dressed in his frock and collar - sat on a chair facing him, and between them stood Antonio, who had taken the rat from his uncle and presented him to the priest for absolution.
“He steals berries from Señor Queso because he’s jealous. He wants to play Ratón Pérez in a concert some time. So…he confesses to theft. And envy.”
“I see,” José said gravely. His gaze shifted from the rodent to Bruno and managed to convey exactly how delighted he was by this ridiculous situation, and Bruno felt his heart melt a little. Maybe it wasn’t just professional courtesy. “And is he sorry for what he has done?”
Antonio waggled a finger at Nodgraedxil, who sat up on his haunches and grasped it in his front paws, then nuzzled his fuzzy face against it. The boy hummed. “He says yes, but that he still wants a chance to be Ratón Pérez.”
This particular rat, Bruno knew, had proven difficult to train and simply refused to stay in one spot not matter how much positive reinforcement he received. Still, it was worth another try, so he shrugged and nodded.
“Alright. Next time, Jorg- Nodgraedxil will have a turn. But only if he stops stealing berries.”
“Yes, he has to…show penitence,” José agreed while failing to keep a straight face. He sat back and cleared his throat. “Nodgraedxil, I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The humans made the sign of the cross. The rat squeaked and scratched behind his ear with a back foot.
“Can he have a bread snack now?” Antonio asked in a stage whisper.
José thought about this, then folded his hands. “Not right now, but when your tío brings him up to the altar next Mass, he will.”
Bruno’s jaw dropped and he  looked from his nephew to his rat to his…whatever they were, about to protest, but Antotio was beaming at him happily, and José gave him a wink, and he settled back in the pew, sighing.
“Fine. But I’ve got like four more rats in this ruana so you’d better make sure you’ve got enough rodent-sized sacraments to go around.”
“And grape juice!” Antonio enthused. “He says he wants the grape juice too.”
Bruno snorted. “Maybe you can serve it to them in a thimble.”
Nodgraedxil, outraged, leaped over and gave Bruno a reproachful nip on the hand. This caused some swearing, which resulted in a whole new round of confessions.

Mirabel: I thought you’d never ask. *reading from list* Balloons?
Antonio: Check! I made them into an arch!
Mirabel: Cake?
Félix: Check, one for each of them to avoid any repeated arguments from last year.
Mirabel: Drinks? Both alcoholic and child-friendly?
Agustín: Check and check!
Mirabel: Flowers?
Isabela: I changed it to mammillaria, but yeah, I decorated.
Luisa: I threw the cacti out and bought flowers from a shop. So, check.
Isabela:
Mirabel: Onions along the perimeter of Casita so Camilo won't come in early?
Dolores: Check.
Mariano: Why are we using onions to ward off Camilo like he's some kind of vampire?
Dolores: He doesn't like onions.

FABril day 6 - Photograph
G, 1385 words, Camilo & Isabela, implied Félix/Agustín/Bruno
Camilo and Isabela find incriminating pictures and have a few thoughts about them.
--
Camilo is not proud of the meltdown he had when he found out his mami dated other guys before his dad. What he holds in his hands right now somehow feels even worse.
In the back of his dad’s hobby cabinet that once stood in his parents’ room — now part of the pile of selectively sorted rubble next to what remains of Casita — he’s found a tintype photograph faded at the edges of his father kissing another woman.
It makes no sense. His dad is plighted to Mom, his eternal devotion to her as clear as the morning sun. Surely this has been the case since the dawn of time; like the moon has the sun, like the night sky has the stars, his father has his mother and vice versa.
His mouth twitches. The pair doesn’t even look that young. The envelope he pulled it out of said ‘1923-1925’. Pa must’ve seen the woman right before Mami.
An intense cocktail of fury and denial swirls inside his chest and dries out his lips. Before he has time to process any of this, his cousin pops up behind him.
“Woah, is that tío Bruno?” Isabela says, peeking over his shoulder. Her words drop like stones from great heights because woah, is it? That’s absurd, and, no fucking way, no way no way no way.
“No,” Camilo croaks dismissively. “No way. I’m the only changeling here.” He squints and presses his nose against the paper to inspect the woman to confirm that she is not, in fact, their tío Bruno. But it’s a little difficult because the photo is in black and white and her face is turned toward…she’s kissing Papi. And Camilo’s hands are shaking.
He can’t color-type the woman in order to determine if she’s wearing Bruno green or Abuela maroon. Her hair is dark and curly like tía Julieta’s, falling to her shoulders, and parted with a bow the way Mami does it. She wears a modest dress that covers her from wrist to neck, a lace shroud draped over her shoulders; Abuela’s signature look. In her ears hang large hoops that look like Mami’s and her nose is kind of big for a lady-
“Guess you got it from him, then,” Isabela says. “Two dads! Wow. Good for you, Milo.”
He twists around. “He’s not my dad. This is probably just one of his telenovela things, right?” That last word comes out a tad too desperate, so he tries to rectify it with a weaker “right?”.
Isabela shrugs her shoulders. “He’s probably just goofing around.” Camilo can only hope so. Their uncle does that a lot. “Are there more?
In fact, there are more photographs. The two cousins huddle behind the cabinet, hidden from view from the others working around the construction site. There’s a bunch more in the envelope Camilo found the first offending tintype in, but a lot of them are simply pictures of their parents from when they were younger: tía Julieta without her worry lines. Mami and Papi — these feel much more correct. Young Abuela with braids, so weird. Tío Bruno in more dresses. Tío Agustín- oh.
“Well, would you look at this,” Camilo says, waving the picture in his cousin’s face, hoping the anxious beating in his chest will disappear if he taunts her. “Seems like tío Bruno’s been getting around.”
Isabela snatches the tintype out of his hand. Sure enough, it’s tío Bruno and her father. Bruno wears a different top Camilo thinks is one of tía Julieta’s, bare at the shoulders with a shawl draped over them. His face is clean-shaven, softened with make-up, and he’s looking up at Agustín with an arm around his waist. Tío Gus looks down equally smitten. It’s a damn near exact copy of how he and tía Julieta always stand together, at ease like the unit they are. Having each other for support.
“He’s…He’s probably copying my mother,” Isabela says coolly. But she adds an equally fragile “right?” after. “It’s a joke.”
The problem is that it looks genuine, their affection. And not in a way Camilo knows Bruno roleplays. It’s the face he makes when he dreams away with a romantic story.
Barring the contentious truth that Papi used to date other people before Mami, the pictures make him feel weird. Like they’re snapshots into relationships Camilo isn’t supposed to be privy to. Hidden in the back of his father’s cabinet. Not both his parents’. Who has ever heard of three men in love?
“They look pretty into it,” Camilo says, feigning casualness. “But that would mean that our dads are…and…they’re not like that…are they?”
“It’s hard to imagine.”
“Not that I think anything is wrong with that,” Camilo says, just in case. It would be hypocritical of him, after all. It’s just…it’s a bit of a blow to consider that Papi could be like him. “It’s like you said. Hard to imagine.”
Isabela gives him a queer, scrutinizing look. “No. I wouldn’t mind either.”
For a second, the world stands still against Camilo’s wish that it should get on with it.
Frowning, Isabela studies the picture for a moment longer. Then her face slackens a little as she gets used to the idea of her dad getting it on with their uncle. “If this is what we think it is, and that’s a big if, do you think they’re still…”
Camilo shrugs.
Having tío Bruno back with the family is weird. Suddenly there’s this new guy messing up the dynamic between everyone. Mirabel has become an emotional support niece, like a crutch that Bruno uses to lean on whenever the family and the neighbors get to be too much. The triplets are a triad again, the unspoken gap filled with someone they have evidently missed between them. The stories that are coming out from the adults now don’t need to accord for one missing member. They no longer trip and fall over the guy they’re supposed to forget, or close the door on him like he’s a boogeyman to banish.
That last one is a very fun but problematic image Camilo helped perpetrate and hasn’t quite reconciled with. Really, Camilo kind of likes the guy. Bruno is shy but creative and outwardly odd. He’s nothing what he thought Bruno was.
No signs of a rekindling romance between Papi and los Tíos Ridículos though. Not that Camilo noticed, anyway.
“Doesn’t look like it,” he says to Isabela.
“No?” she offers. “You don’t see tío Bruno looking all moony for no reason and wonder what he’s thinking about?”
“Sure I do. Just don’t think it’s about our dads. I mean, I kinda assumed that he did that because he’s Bruno.”
“Yeah,” Isabela agrees. “I’m not about to ask him, by the way.”
“You’re not?” Camilo asks disappointed. It’s been a while since he’s had an adventure — everyone else in the family seems to get one. “Then how are we supposed to find out-”
She places her hand on his shoulder. “Milo, maybe this is one of those things that’ll come out when it’s time.”
Isabela’s secret weapon is congeniality. Camilo has always thought that poking and bullying that mask of perfection off of her is fun, knowing there’s a loser like him underneath the princess. But being on the receiving end of that generous face makes it hard to deny the resemblance between her and Abuela. Ergo, he crumples like a little boy under her gaze.
“If tío Bruno and our dads need to have a conversation,” she says sternly, “that’s between them. There’s no way I’m asking tío Bruno and freaking him out — if these photographs are what we think they are and he’s not just putting on a play.”
She has a point. There’s a chance he’ll flat out deny or skirt the issue, which Bruno has done before with less thrilling subjects than forbidden romance. It has been two months since the house fell down and their uncle got plastered back into their lives like a gob of spackle. He’s barely getting used to everyone seeing him. Literally.
“Or maybe it’s nothing and he just likes wearing lady’s dresses.” She shrugs with a smile.
The two of them gather all the photographs back into the envelope and place it in the back of Papi’s cabinet where Camilo found it, hiding the memories a little while longer until they’re ready to come out.
