“‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” —Acts 17:28 (NIV)
“It is through him that we are able to live, to do what we do, and to be who we are. As your own poets have said, ‘We all come from him.’” —Acts 17:28 (ERV)
“Wonderfully made” devotional by Allie Marie Smith - Day 3: “You Are Made to Glorify God:”
“We live in a self-glorifying culture. The path to happiness seems paved with self-worship and self-promotion. We see celebrities, athletes, and influencers get rewarded for their self-exaltation, while the rest of us try to follow suit or wonder why we’re not quite good enough. This lifestyle might sparkle and shine, but eventually, the glitter wears off. The “likes” stop coming. Someone else shinier comes along. Thankfully, we have been made for so much more than a life that’s all about us.
Our true purpose is popularly summarized in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, which says our chief end or purpose is “to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.” As God’s image-bearers, we have been made to glorify God with our lives, to enjoy His goodness, and to make Him known.
We can’t add to or take away from God’s glory, but we can honor, praise, and worship Him through our thoughts, actions, and relationships. When we live in a way that shines the spotlight on God, rather than ourselves, we are the most alive and happy. We have purpose and joy.
When we turn away from self-focus and fix our eyes above, we live in gratitude to God who is the giver of an ever good and perfect gift. We humbly acknowledge that apart from God we are nothing. We begin to really shine as we relax into the destiny God has for us: to be loved by Christ, to bring Him glory, and to love others well.
You have been made to glorify God and as you do you will find true purpose and peace.
Reflect: How can you glorify God through the gifts and passions He’s given you?
Prayer: God, Thank You for inviting me into a greater story — to live fully alive and satisfied in You. I acknowledge that every good and perfect gift in my life comes from You, and I resolve to glorify You in all I do and say so that others may know of Your goodness and love.”

Hello. I've already read the Kingston Cycle, Half a Soul and I'm about to finish the Stariel books. Do you have more recommendations? Thank you in advance.
Oh absolutely!
A Matter of Magic, by Patricia C. Wrede (for cross-country Regency romps, rogues, magicians, spies, and Ladies of Quality)
A Marvellous Light, by Freya Marske (for murder and mystery and secret Edwardian wizardry, romance, grand old houses and creepy curses)
Spellbound, by Allie Therin (for forbidden love, found family, and frightening magic in 1920s New York)
Shades of Milk and Honey, by Mary Robinette Kowal (for frothy and impeccably evocative Regency magic)
Sorcerer to the Crown, by Zen Cho (for schemes both magical and mundane and the world of fairy crossing into the world of the tonne)
To Say Nothing of the Dog, by Connie Willis (for laugh-out-loud time travel shenanigans and questionable Victorian aesthetic choices)
Soulless, by Gail Carriger (for vampire assassins, werewolf aristocrats, interrupted tea time, and other terrible inconveniences which may beset a young lady)
A little darker:
The Magpie Lord, by KJ Charles (for semi-secret magical society, creepy family estate, steamy romance all in an Extremely Victorian Gothic setting)
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, by Susanna Clarke (clever and deeply atmospheric tour of a magical 19th century England, but definitely not romance)
Salt Magic, Skin Magic, by Lee Welch (for curses and magical bonds and frightening fairies)
Widdershins, by Jordan L Hawk (for Gilded Age mystery and romance featuring Lovecraftian horror and humor)
More fantasy:
Uprooted, by Naomi Novik (for fairytale magic and whimsy, adventure and romance and creepy trees)
Seducing the Sorcerer, by Lee Welch (for wizard fashion, romance and humor and whimsical magic)
Stardust, by Neil Gaiman (for wild romps in the fairyland next door, alternately humorous and haunting)
More historical:
The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ Charles (for saucy Regency romance and determined social scheming)
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (for dry humor, wacky hijinx, and extended family shenanigans)
Hither Page or The Missing Page by Cat Sebastian (village and manor house mysteries respectively, featuring lots of queer romance and found family with a dash of jaded post-war espionage)
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (for yearning and laughs and first love and an eccentric family living in an increasingly run down castle)
A little farther from the brief, but might be worth checking out On Vibes:
The Left Handed Booksellers of London, by Garth Nix
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, by Diana Wynne Jones
His Majesty's Dragon, by Naomi Novik (more Regency fantasy, but full on Age of Sail adventure rather than comedy of manners, romance, or secret magic)
Among Others, by Jo Walton
Arabella of Mars, by David D. Levine
A Natural History of Dragons, by Marie Brennan
It also sounds like a Georgette Heyer or Jeeves and Wooster binge would be really fun right now!

james potter variants bc i've come across so many recently and i need to share them:
pavitr prabhakar (atsv)
i feel like he needs no explanation
any marauders stan who's watched across the spider-verse saw pav come on screen and went "yep, that's jamie"
he totally lectured his friends on the whole "chai tea" thing more than once
really just everything about him screams james fleamont potter
give him a pair of glasses and it's the exact same guy
also spidey james means everything to me
niall james horan
really what brought me to this conclusion was his new album
(stream the show by niall horan everyone)
must be love is suuuuch a james coded song
hc that he has an extensive collection of cardigans
grandpa sweaters might be remus' thing but this man owns every and any cardigan you could possibly imagine
while we're on the topic, seeing blind (flicker) is just james falling for reg
every 1D boy is assigned to a marauder and it just so happens that niall is a james guy
sunil jha (loveless)
alice oseman thought they could write james potter with a different name and we wouldn't notice?
just the way he, no questions asked, helps georgia when she needs them is as james potter as it gets
ace james, anyone?
also he/they jamie ftw
sunil verbally destroying that little twink (justin? i think?) really was everything
honorable mention to their "could've gone harder with the pride flags" quote
smith parker (iksw)
popular guy, captain of the football team, who everyone thinks is arrogant but is actually the sweetest person you'll ever meet
he just has so many layers
james is totally genderqueer, at least demiboy but that man is not cis
(i'm here to push the "every marauder is some shade of trans" agenda)
dating the most popular girl just so he could keep an eye on his ex best friend who he was secretly in love with?
on that note, the whole childhood best friends to enemies/rivals to allies to friends to lovers with rory is insanely jegulus coded
(also rory is so reg but more on that later)
WHEN HE PUTS FLOWERS IN HIS HAIR?????
his friendship with chloe reminds me so much of james and mary
(chloe is def mary but again, i'll elaborate later)
casey mcquiston knows how to write marauders variants and it shows
q (xo kitty)
ok yes, i see a fluffy poc jock and i think james potter
but you have to understand that q is simply james
him and kitty give platonic flowerpott vibes
you would think that the obvious choice for a james variant in xo kitty is dae but you'd be wrong bc james is not a selfish dickhead with his head so far up his ass it's basically a hat (can u tell i hate dae?)
also q bending his morals for florian? otb jegulus
q being the captain of the KISS outdoors club is so james coded

“Your sins were like a big cloud, but I wiped them all away. Your sins are gone, like a cloud that disappeared into thin air. I rescued and protected you, so come back to me.” —Isaiah 44:22 (ERV)
“I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.” —Isaiah 44:22 (NLT)
“Jacob, the Lord created you. Israel, he made you, and now he says, “Don’t be afraid. I saved you. I named you. You are mine.” —Isaiah 43:1 (ERV)
“Wonderfully made” devotional by Allie Marie Smith - Day 4: “You Are Made to Be Redeemed:”
“The world won’t love you broken. But Jesus—He will run to you. We all break. We all come apart, and experience heartbreak, disappointment, and hardship. Sometimes terrible things happen to us that don’t make sense.
Our struggles are not our identities, and with God, our brokenness never has the final say. As Elisabeth Elliot said, “Of one thing I am perfectly sure: God’s story never ends with ‘ashes.’”Redemption means to take back our buyback. It is “the action of saving or being saved from sin, error or evil” and “the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or the clearing of a debt.” Jesus has come to redeem our lives and bring beauty and purpose from even the most broken and painful parts of our stories.
Like a piece of Japanese Kintsugi pottery that has been shattered and then mended by a gold lacquer, by breaking and coming to God, not only can we become more whole, we can become more beautiful. Christ’s power that has overcome death mends the places we are crushed, making us whole to shine like gold.
God’s eternal plan for you is good. Sometimes we experience our mending on this side of eternity. Sometimes we just get glimpses of it in this life. But if we don’t, we know it is coming in heaven, and that one day every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4). There will be no more mourning, no more death, or loss, or heartache. Restoration, healing, and wholeness are coming. Do not let your heart be troubled.
Reflect: How can you surrender the broken parts of your life to Christ?
Prayer: God, Thank You that You promise to redeem the pain and brokenness in my life. Thank You that Your eternal plan for me is good. I choose to trust that in Your perfect time, You will mend every shattered piece of my life and bring beauty from brokenness.”

Women’s History Month: More Nonfiction Recommendations
The Barbizon by Paulina Bren
Welcome to New York's legendary hotel for women.
Liberated from home and hearth by World War I, politically enfranchised and ready to work, women arrived to take their place in the dazzling new skyscrapers of Manhattan. But they did not want to stay in uncomfortable boarding houses. They wanted what men already had - exclusive residential hotels with maid service, workout rooms, and private dining.
Built in 1927, at the height of the Roaring Twenties, the Barbizon Hotel was designed as a luxurious safe haven for the "Modern Woman" hoping for a career in the arts. Over time, it became the place to stay for any ambitious young woman hoping for fame and fortune. Sylvia Plath fictionalized her time there in The Bell Jar, and, over the years, it's almost 700 tiny rooms with matching floral curtains and bedspreads housed, among many others, Titanic survivor Molly Brown; actresses Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli, Ali MacGraw, Jaclyn Smith; and writers Joan Didion, Gael Greene, Diane Johnson, Meg Wolitzer. Mademoiselle magazine boarded its summer interns there, as did Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School its students and the Ford Modeling Agency its young models. Before the hotel's residents were household names, they were young women arriving at the Barbizon with a suitcase and a dream.
Not everyone who passed through the Barbizon's doors was destined for success - for some, it was a story of dashed hopes - but until 1981, when men were finally let in, the Barbizon offered its residents a room of their own and a life without family obligations. It gave women a chance to remake themselves however they pleased; it was the hotel that set them free. No place had existed like it before or has since.
D-Day Girls by Sarah Rose
In 1942, the Allies were losing, Germany seemed unstoppable, and every able man in England was on the front lines. To “set Europe ablaze,” in the words of Winston Churchill, the Special Operations Executive  (SOE), whose spies were trained in everything from demolition to sharpshooting, was forced to do something unprecedented: recruit women. Thirty-nine answered the call, leaving their lives and families to become saboteurs in France.
In D-Day Girls, Sarah Rose draws on recently declassified files, diaries, and oral histories to tell the thrilling story of three of these remarkable women. There’s Andrée Borrel, a scrappy and streetwise Parisian who blew up power lines with the Gestapo hot on her heels; Odette Sansom, an unhappily married suburban mother who saw the SOE as her ticket out of domestic life and into a meaningful adventure; and Lise de Baissac, a fiercely independent member of French colonial high society and the SOE’s unflappable “queen.” Together, they destroyed train lines, ambushed Nazis, plotted prison breaks, and gathered crucial intelligence - laying the groundwork for the D-Day invasion that proved to be the turning point in the war.
Heiresses by Laura Thompson
Heiresses: surely they are among the luckiest women on earth. Are they not to be envied, with their private jets and Chanel wardrobes and endless funds? Yet all too often those gilded lives have been beset with trauma and despair. Before the 20th century a wife’s inheritance was the property of her husband, making her vulnerable to kidnap, forced marriages, even confinement in an asylum. And in modern times, heiresses fell victim to fortune-hunters who squandered their millions.
Heiresses tells the stories of these million dollar babies: Mary Davies, who inherited London’s most valuable real estate, and was bartered from the age of twelve; Consuelo Vanderbilt, the original American “Dollar Heiress”, forced into a loveless marriage; Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress who married seven times and died almost penniless; and Patty Hearst, heiress to a newspaper fortune who was arrested for terrorism. However, there are also stories of independence and achievement: Angela Burdett-Coutts, who became one of the greatest philanthropists of Victorian England; Nancy Cunard, who lived off her mother's fortune and became a pioneer of the civil rights movement; and Daisy Fellowes, elegant linchpin of interwar high society and noted fashion editor.
Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.
Among these problem-solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation. Originally relegated to teaching math in the South’s segregated public schools, they were called into service during the labor shortages of World War II, when America’s aeronautics industry was in dire need of anyone who had the right stuff. Suddenly, these overlooked math whizzes had a shot at jobs worthy of their skills, and they answered Uncle Sam’s call, moving to Hampton, Virginia and the fascinating, high-energy world of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory.
Even as Virginia’s Jim Crow laws required them to be segregated from their white counterparts, the women of Langley’s all-black “West Computing” group helped America achieve one of the things it desired most: a decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War, and complete domination of the heavens.
Starting in World War II and moving through to the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and the Space Race, Hidden Figures follows the interwoven accounts of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden, four African American women who participated in some of NASA’s greatest successes. It chronicles their careers over nearly three decades they faced challenges, forged alliances and used their intellect to change their own lives, and their country’s future.

Hey, I like your GI Joe ocs! Do you have any more info on them to share?
Ah! I haven't thought about them in a long time I'm surprised to see someone interested in them. Well...
Risa: Just like how Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes are a reflection of each other, Risa is a reflection for Jinx. Both are heiresses to a powerful ninja clan, but where Jinx freely chooses to join the Joes, Risa is forced to ally with Cobra via her fiance. She despises them, but loves Storm Shadow, creating an internal conflict with her personal feelings. She believes he still has good in him. While he reciprocates he's too obsessed in his revenge to realize his actions are hurting her and the future of their clan. Eventually Risa realizes she does have a choice and takes control of the clan back from her fiance and cut ties with Cobra. I have not created a codename for her but her costume is purple
Shawnee: She doesn't have a particularly deep backstory, but she joined the joes mainly for fun and because she didn't know what to do after school. Diamond is tough but she's also knowledgeable in geography. Her codename is Diamond.
Spell-Lunky/Meredith Rogers: She comes from a witch species in Ireland. She joined the Joes after foiling Cobra's plot to use her people's magic for their world domination schemes. Meredith come off as intimidating and aloof to some, but she is a friendly soul. Just don't prank her.
Siren Call/Melody Jones: she's based on Satin from the 80s cartoon, sharing a similar backstory. She works mainly in communication and partnered with Silent Knight on missions. Her beauty and voice draws the male joes attention making Nitelite a bit jealous.
Nitelite/Xandra Harrison: Party animal and best friend of Shawnee. Loves loves LOVES to flirt with the male Joes with varying degrees of success. She's responsible for handling sensors and other equipment used for night time. Also she had a very eccentric style of dress as a civilian.
Genevieve Colton: I created her because I think having a character descended from the original toy is a great concept that somehow hasn't been explored much in canon. So she's the General's grandkid or daughter depending on continuity. And since Duke is arguably the main face of the brand, I thought it be cool for him to have a love interest. That and the horror of finding out the woman you're dating is related to THE namesake. Don't worry Genevieve is more than your token love interest: she's a spitfire and the head trauma surgeon. I haven't seen a lot of medics in GI Joe (correct me) and I think GI Nurse could use a retool since Hasbro keeps pretending she doesn't exist.
Silent Knight/Mary Smith: Deaf, communicates with ASL so she and Snake Eyes have their own little language. Pretty chivalrous and goofy, but also honest. Basically she's a human version of Silverbolt from BW.
