(bonus points if they’re about reptiles/amphibians/fish)

MarInk Day 8: Toad
I recently started watching The Animals of Farthing Wood series and while my opinions on it are mixed I do quite enjoy it. So for this prompt I wanted to draw Toad, he's probably one of my favorite characters from the show. I just love his always positive attitude.

My sister: "Hey do you remember that 90s or naughties book series that was apparently for kids but was just talking animals and extreme violence? The one you made OCs for?"
Me (not sure if she's talking about, Animals of Farthing Wood, Redwall, Animorphs, his Dark Materials, Ga'hoole or Warrior Cats or one of the other Erin Hunter books): "Yes!?"
Her: "Is the fandom still queer as hell?"
Me, enthusiasticly: "Hell Yeah!"

I feel like. I need to know. Where my other “Watched a cartoon with animals in it as a very very small child only to watch newborn mice babies be impaled on a thorn bush by a small angry bird” traumatized kids are?
Who else watched Animals of Farthing Wood without knowing what was going on or probably even being at the appropriate age to watch? (I know it was a children’s cartoon show, but I literally am not sure I remember understanding the concept of time when I was watching this. I remember associating it with being on when I managed to wake up before the sun did. So. even the horrifying animal murder might’ve been more than I was supposed to consume at that age. And there was *so much horrifying animal murder* in this show. I may not have seen Watership Down too young, but I did see a pheasant get shot because he was too grief struck by finding his wife, cooked and presented on the dining room table as supper, to run from the approaching farmer. So like. It balances out I guess...)

How many people remember this show? This was the kid version of Game of Thrones. So much death and sadness. Anyone could die at any moment. You kept watching hoping the animals would reach a sanctuary. And like Game of Thrones they kinda fucked up the final season. Not as bad as GOT mind you. That freaking rat Bully deserved worst.

‘We must all find a new home.' Books can help refugee children process traumatic experiences
Tumblr media
Farthing Wood is being bulldozed, and there's a drought. Fox, Badger, Toad, Tawny Owl, Mole and the other animals must band together and set off to a far-away nature reserve. Their journey is full of adventure and fraught with disasters, and the animals must work together to survive.

Pax was only a Fox cub when his family was killed and he was rescued by 'his boy', Peter. Now the country is at war and when his father enlists, Peter has no choice but to move in with his grandfather.
Far worse than leaving home is the fact that he has to leave Pax behind. But before Peter spends even one night under his grandfather's roof he sneaks out into the night, determined to find his beloved friend.

There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that's what April's father tells her when his scientific research takes them to this remote Arctic outpost for six months. But one endless summer night, April meets one. He is starving, lonely and a long way from home. Determined to save him, April begins the most important journey of her life...
The Last Bear is a moving story that will win the hearts of children the world over and show them that no one is too young or insignificant to make a difference. The Last Bear is a celebration of the love between a child and an animal, a battle cry for our world and an irresistible adventure with a heart as big as a bear's.
