Let me preface this by saying I’m not trying to be homophobic or anything. I absolutely love and support Spirk and their bandwagon of shippers. But

I think it would be so weird if Spirk were official canon.

Think about it. Generations have fought for Spirk, bled for Spirk, walked to school uphill both ways wearing holey sneakers in the snow just to get a peek at that sweet sweet fanfiction. On one hand, making it canon would feel like a battle had been won for the ancient veterans of the OG Trek. On the other, it takes the fantasy out of it.

Think of it in terms of the forbidden fruit theory: the less canon Spirk is, the more we want it. We fantasize. We write fanfics. We dream of it. But if it became real, could we still dream?

Maybe you have certain idols, certain celebrities that are alluring because you don’t know anything about them. You don’t actually want them, you simply want to fantasize, to love them solely as an idea. If you were actually able to meet and see them, it would again detract from that fantasy. To me, it’s the same way with Spirk. It’s a fleeting ghost in the corners of my mind, always just out of reach.

And, most importantly, we have to consider the possibility that it simply won’t be as great if it were written in. The writers might have them hold hands on the Bridge and kiss in every hallway and that would ruin the reason we shipped them so hard in the first place: because their love in TOS was deep, hidden, yet suffused everything they did. Even if it wasn’t technically written into the script, you could see the love in even the most platonic of actions. Billy Shatner’s twinkle eyes when he looks at Leonard Nimoy speak more words than an entire script can hold.

In the end, I don’t know how to cope with the erasure of the Big Gay in Star Trek. Neither Spock nor Kirk could be with anyone else, yet putting them together after all these years might end in disappointment if their relationship ends up getting totally butchered by ST writers’ weirdness. I know you might think differently, but frankly, I don’t like romance in sci-fi. I think it gets in the way of the cool sci-fi shit. I don’t care who’s dating and who’s kissing and who’s cheating when I’m waiting for them to do the cool wormhole time travelly thing.

But of course, wherever Spock and Kirk’s relationship may (boldly) go, be like a proper fleet captain and don’t stop with the ships.
