I’m actually crying right now and I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense I’m emotional, but the marvels comes out in a week and I am so overwhelmed by emotions but at the moment I’m upset. Upset because of all the toxic backlash it’s been getting and now DAYS before it comes out I’m seeing HUGE reporters and resources say that it’s destained to fail and that’s so upsetting

This movie truly means the world to me, these characters and the stories they tell are SO important to see especially from such a huge franchise Carol Danvers is a strong female lead that means so much to me and so many other girls and Kamala! Not only does she make fans feel seen by such a big company but she’s a Muslim girl! I’ve never seen a Muslim superhero until I saw her and I think that’s it’s so important to have that representation! And Monica too! She’s so strong and such a powerful lead and honestly she stole the show for me in wandavision!

These are such a diverse group of people and I think that STILL there isn’t enough representation in marvel but this movie really pushes those limits and shows people that it can happen.

And maybe I’m just gullible and stupid but seeing all these negative things EVERYWHERE is starting to make me think they’re true… seeing rumors that Brie Larson is gonna quit (I know it’s selfish of me but I really hope she doesn’t but I get it if she cant deal with the constant harassment) is devastating to me, she’s such an amazing person and has brought so much light into my life and so many others.

Thinking of all this and really seeing all this has made me think a lot about how difficult and isolating it is to be someone who ISNT a straight white man! And that’s exactly what these characters and these movies are trying to prove that we can overcome that yet!

I just wish I could tell Brie and Iman and Teyonah just how much I love and appreciate them and to never stop, I wish that every The Marvels fan could hear that but that’s just not how it is.

I still have so much hope for this movie and these people am even if everyone hates it, it won’t stop me from loving it with all my heart <3

Okay I just found out something. So we all know Captain Marvel. (BTW this post is for marvel fans) and her movie. I've watched that movie multiple times. Love it, I think it's written fairly well, great CGI, funny script, good lore and story, love how everything ties in, overall its a really good movie; and captain marvel is one of my favourite superheroes, and one of the most badass.

WHY THE F*CK do people think she's a "bad movie and bad superhero" like it's one of the really good B.E movies! (Before Endgame)

**I'm using B.E as Befoee Endgame because A.E (after endgame) is arguably the worse marvel era. Don't get me wrong, it has some great stuff in A.E, but B.E is just better overall.

Anyways, back to what I was saying. I think k Brie Larson was a great actress and did really well portraying the character Captain Marvel. Not to mention captain marvel was one of the overpowered superheroes in the B.E era, before they started making everyone OP to defeat big CGI villains and to make their movies more action packed to get more views and stuff. She had good plotline, good powers, cool backstory, funny, and genuinely one of my favourite female superheroes.

I would love to see her as the new face of the MCU, A.E. considering they killed off what was generally considered the "face" of the MCU, Iron Man and Captain America, they haven't put much focus on one or two specific people to be aforementioned face.

Captain marvel hasn't been killed off, she has amazing potential, and she's personally one of my favourite 'Big Badass Backup To Fight Big Strong Villain" in those "No hope left" moments.

I don't understand the hate on her. May e its because she was, along with Natasha Romanff, one of the first female superheroes on-screen in the MCU. Sexism is a big thing in movies and stuff, but I have some reasons why I think she and another person- who I will mention later- should be the next 'Face of the MCU'.

1: the previous 'face' duo was Iron man and Captain America. So it sta ds to reason, along with what marvel has been doing to be more racially and gender inclusive, that we should have 2 female superheroes.

Yes I know the whole 'really overexaggerated feminist film superhero plotline new budget annoying superhero to earn more money and get higher ratings' thing is annoying; but hear me out.

Point 2: I have a few options, but to continue off of point 1; I feel like a good combo would be The Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel. (Wanda Maximoff and Carol Danvers)

They are both powerful, badass, good storyline, great actors behind them heroes/characters. They could make for a good duo to contrast from the B.E duo of men.

Point 3: yes u know that Wanda is 'dead' BUT before the rocks fell on her, you could clearly see a flash of RED MAGIC in the rocks. After the entire Dr Strange MoM (multiverse of madness) plotline was 'Scarlet Witch has grown in power she's following us into DUFFERENT DIMENSIONS and was prophesied since the DAWN OF TIME, and has unlocked much more of her powers, I HIGHLY doubt some normal old rocks would kill her.

It's just unlikely considering how obscure some of marvels foreshadowing has been, we know that they foreshadow films that come out like 3 years later.

Point 4: moving away from Captain Marvel and Wanda, how about a new duo.

Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova. Its similar to the old duo of Captain America (man out of time, from 1940, soldier) and Iron Man (normal human, with special training/ gear that is one of the only things that makes them super.)

This duo would be interesting, especially as we've seen both bucky AND yelena on an official marvel movie poster together.

I personally love both characters;and it pays homage to the golden age of marvel B.E.

Bucky is homage to Captain America (obviously) and Yelena is homage to both Iron Man AND Natasha Romanoff.

And it could allow for more opportunity of the old age to come shining back through the new age, in the form of two humans, who have a rivalry,

(I think it would be interesting to have bucky and yelena to have a mild rivalry at least, considering we chose them due to there similarities with the old duo, cap and stark)

Who are also enhanced in ways that gives them an advantage in fighting, and it could give a lot of opportunity to save marvel. And bucky is a fan favourite character, so considering marvels reputation going down now their movies are getting worse COMPARED TO B.E, I think this could be a great way to bring the nostalgia of the old movies back.

So my original rant was about captain marvel being hated. Sorry for making you read all this, and if you have read everything here, I thank you immensely for giving me the time and chance.

I really miss the B.E era, and hate how they kill off all the OG great characters for new, sh*ttier superheros like Kamala Khan.

So here is just some ideas in my passionate rant which I would love to see. I love Wanda and Captain marvel, but personally I think I would prefer the Winter Soldier and White Widow duo because it would need less fancy magic CGI, and give the film(s) they appear in a more B.E and better quality feel then just a bunch of CGI that takes away from the quality of the movie and storyline, and the lack of CGI ( I mean the bright magic flashy stuff they constantly use in A.E, not the general cgi they more often use in B.E)

Would give the film(s) a better, more enostalgic, more authentic, emotional, just overall better film quality and plotline.

It’s three in the morning when you finally wake to hear Carol’s feet come thumping down the corridor outside your room. She must be barefoot, but she walks like an elephant anyway. Not subtle, that woman.

And it becomes glaringly obvious that she’s not trying to be, either: she shoves the door open and flicks the overhead lamp on even though she knows you’re in bed and she recognises that it’s three am. The light startles you, burning through your eyelids.

“Oh, you dick,” you grunt, shoving yourself up on your elbows. You try to glare at her but you can’t even tell where she is, through tear-choked narrowed eyes. You blink and blink the light away and when you’ve finally got a focus on the room, that’s when she pulls her hoodie off and flings it right at your face. You scramble to disentangle yourself. So she’s in a mood. Well, two can play this game.

“Morning,” Carol says, facing the window and the dresser, and she grabs the hem of her t-shirt, arms crossed, and peels it off over her head. You get a nice big eyeful of all those flexing scapula muscles under the straps of her sports bra before she discards the t-shirt onto a nearby chair. She knows how much you hate the mess. So she’s trying to entice you and enrage you. Interesting tactics.

“Where the hell have you been?” you ask, rubbing furiously at your still-stinging eyes. Carol eyes you over her shoulder, studiously.

“Out,” she says. She reconsiders, digging her thumbs past the waistband of her leggings to pull them down. “Exercising.”

“Exercising,” you repeat, dry as you can muster. “It’s pitch black out there.”

Carol just rolls her eyes, turning back to the window, and that’s the final straw. You’re out of bed and up behind her before she has time to even tug her leggings halfway down her ass, and you smack her hands away sharply and shove her up against the dresser with your body. Her hips hit the wood with a satisfying thud.

“Hey,” she protests, but you can hear the telltale shudder in her voice. “I need a shower.”

You place your hand flat on her back, against her warm skin, and lean close to speak into her ear. “Don’t try and tell me what you need, Danvers.” You feel her tense a little. Good. The crawl of her muscle makes that vindictive heat in your chest fan and flame. “Bend over.”

She ignores you. You give her two of her lung-filling, shaky breaths to rectify the situation. She continues to ignore you.

You give her a hard shove at the top of her spine that surprises her and she folds and catches herself, palms to the wooden top of the dresser. Not a sound from her mouth, now. Those beautiful muscles over and under her shoulder blades contract and roll, and you trace them with the tips of your fingers, breath held in admiration.

You love to know how able she is to throw you off any time. How that shows how much she really wants this, given the fact that she’s collapsed under you so easily.

Your hand settles on the back of her neck and you pause to brush your thumb over the short hair at the base of her skull. Then you shove her face into the wood.

Carol grunts, though not on purpose, you think. Her elbows are up, hands still flat down, and she turns her face just a little to breathe. She’s warm under your palm: always so warm, like her blood’s running at a hundred and ten degrees beneath her skin. You trace the hem of her sports bra, then the line of her spine all the way down her back with just the tips of your fingers. She’s breathing hard.

Your hand reaches her waistband and you release the back of her neck, settling your hand on her axis instead, and you slip your fingers under the elastic of her leggings.

“Tell me to stop and I will,” you say. And though she’s now panting furiously and glaring half at you out of the corner of her eye, she says nothing. Just a slight nod to tell you that she understands. That she wants this. You slide your hand into her hair and tighten it into a fist. In response, Carol bites down on a low sound that you can feel through your knuckles. “Quiet,” you say, and you grab her waistband, boxers too, and yank them down hard over her hips, down to her mid-thigh, and leave them there. You reach out once more and snap the waistband playfully against her skin.

Then you consider. You’re still pissed off, your thoughts flooded with the sharp anger of being woken so rudely, and you know you want to make her feel it. But you also know that there’s something she needs, otherwise, she wouldn’t have run the risk of provoking you. You pull a little on her hair.

And she’s being so patient. If you didn’t know her any better, you’d think the wait would be enough to make her beg for it, but Carol doesn’t beg. You’ve never managed to coax so much as a single Please out of her.

You nudge her left foot out a little, spreading her legs as much you can while she’s still trapped by her leggings. You lean down and kiss her shoulder, the side of her neck.

“Don’t ever pull that shit again,” you say, against her hairline where you know she can feel it through the bone. Then you grab the inside of her thigh, shift it sideways and tuck your knee in to keep her there, and you push two fingers inside of her. She’s so wet there’s no resistance - you knew she’d be dripping even before you’d pulled her pants down - and she rocks shamelessly back onto your fingers. Fair enough.

You can tell she’s attempting to watch you over her shoulder: you catch her at it when you’re pulling out a little, her brown eyes narrowing to lazy slits. Her cheeks are flushed red and when she rocks against you, her arms and shoulders tense. You start fucking her harder, and you hoist her leg up with your knee to give yourself more room. Carol digs her fingernails into the wood of the dresser, mouth falling open, eyes falling closed. Those might be sparks at her fingertips, scorching the wood. She’s tense in the lines of her back and her thighs, as if relaxing to pleasure means she loses to you. If you’d bother to articulate it, you’d tell her she lost the minute she let you bend her over the dresser.

The wood isn’t made for this kind of exertion. It smacks against the wall as you thrust, hips behind your fingers to give yourself momentum, and Carol flinches at the sound.

She’s trying so hard not to make a sound herself that she’s biting into her lip, eyes screwed closed now. She’s so warm, and slippery-wet, so much so that you release her hair and hold her hips down against the dresser instead to get a purchase on her. You love seeing her like this, devoid of all that sure control she usually exudes, trying so desperately hard not to show you how much she loves it.

You know her better than to be fooled. You know her so well you can see the rise of her orgasm in the minuscule ripple of tension across her shoulders and you know when to speed up the pace until it’s obviously almost unbearable and she’s crushing herself against the wood of the dresser, legs shaking, clenching around your fingers.

And then you pull out. And you step back. Carol gives a great shudder, still tense, still expecting, and you’ve moved away before she even realises she’s not come yet. You slap her on the ass and make for the bathroom.

“Oh, what the fuck?” you hear her groan: that’s her finally coming to her senses, speaking directly into the wood of the dresser. You stick your hands under the faucet and scrub away her slick from your fingers, unable to stop a triumphant grin from spreading across your face. Got her back.

When you emerge from the bathroom, drying your hands on your sweatpants, Carol is shakily ridding herself of her leggings and boxers, hands braced on the edge of the dresser. She looks up as you pull open a drawer in the other dresser by the bathroom door, and scowls at the look on your face.

“You’re such a-” You fling a t-shirt at her and it wraps around her face, cutting off the rest of her sentence. She grasps at it and rips it away, a scorching glare ready.

“Yep,” you say, popping the p. You climb back onto the bed and draw the covers back up to your waist, collapsing face-first into the pillow. “Takes one to know one. Get a shower and come warm up my bed, sweetheart.”

Back from seeing The Marvels! Initial braindump ahead.

Let me first start by saying that it was…fun?

But man, I feel like it suffered from the same problem as all recent Marvel releases...pacing. I feel like this was too rushed and potentially edited down to a point where it kind of hindered the film. There wasn't enough time spent with quite a few pivotal moments (especially the heavier moments because GOD FORBID MARVEL YOU LET SOMETHING BE HEAVY WITHOUT BREEZING PAST IT IMMEDIATELY). This could have been fleshed out more in certain areas. It was too surface-level to me which is disappointing but this is a universal Marvel issue though so nothing new here.

Brie + Teyonah + Iman had great chemistry. Loved every bit of it. I mean the training montage was cute.

Fight choreography was fun to watch (effects were a little rough during all the switching though).

IT'S NICE TO SEE FURY BE SILLY AGAIN. He's only like this with Carol and I love it so much but I still wanted more of those two. Their little banter/argument on the ship was hilarious I just wanted more of them because I love their dynamic so much.

Goose is a goddamn menace.

Dar-Benn, while another forgettable villain...I get her motive but still murder. Again, I wish she was fleshed out more because she really did have a legit reason to be pissed at Captain Marvel

Valkyrie/Carol was total fanservice AND I DON'T GIVE A DAMN. YOU GOT ME. FANFIC WRITERS TAG ME I WANT IT ALL. THERE WAS NOTHING STRAIGHT ABOUT THAT MOMENT. I NEED DETAILS NOW LADIES.

Guys...I'm just going to say it. I hated the Aladin (Aladna? what was it called? THE WATER PLANET) scene. It was just too cringe for me. Not a fan.

I KNEW Carol was on Earth with Maria while Monica was blipped. It didn't make sense for her not to be. But again, thanks to that good ol' Marvel pacing, WE JUST BREEZED PAST THIS PIVOTAL REVEAL AND I AM STILL ANNOYED ABOUT IT. Also? Endgame haircut reason confirmed.

Oh and Goose being with Maria the whole time...ugh my heart.

Kamala recruiting the Young Avengers is adorable and I LOVE THAT KATE IS FIRST MY GIRL I'VE MISSED HER.

I wish I could get excited about X-men but I don't trust Marvel right now.

Carol wrestling with the consequences of her actions (and the damage she’s caused, being known as “annihilator” across the universe and the guilt that comes with that)…again, I wish they would have spent more time with this because that's a central character attribute of hers that should be explored deeper. There’s so much meat there and I’m just left here starving. Like, the moment when she yells at Kamala about how they have to save as many Skrulls as they can which isn’t all…that’s a big-time Captain call that once again, has consequences and fallout. THIS IS THE CONTENT I WANT. Maybe if she had her own proper sequel which we probably won't ever get now. Do I sound bitter?

I'm seeing it again on Saturday (is it bad I don’t really feel compelled to though now) so now that I know what happens maybe I can settle and enjoy it more? I don’t know. Like I said in the beginning, it was fun, light, charming…but overall? This came across too superficial to me. I mean I’m not asking for a 3 hour movie just more depth. I just love Carol Danvers so much, I’ll always want more okay??

Even if there's plenty of problems with how the MCU writes women that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of criticism made in bad faith. Like, people where complaining about She-Hulk when the only thing out was the Logo. "Why does there have to be a female Hulk." Ask as if she wasn't a character who's been around for over 40 years.

Yes, it is important for women and girls to be their own heroes but there's nothing wrong with female counterparts. There can actually be a lot value in them. Sometimes it's good for children to see themselves in not just a hero, but THE hero. It's great that a black kid can see that they can be Captain America or Spider-Man, the hero everyone knows and adores. Same hold true for girls. That there's Carol Danvers is equal to her male predecessor. It's important that the Bat-Family is a family and that Kathy and Barbara wear the logo.

Anyway, point is that the Distaff Counterpart is simply a character that can be done well or poorly and that "Why girl version of guy character, but not boy version of Lady character" is not a real criticism. Jessica is going to be in n Spider-verse 2 and I'm so excited

There is a lot of criticism done in bad faith, I couldn't agree more with you!

The She-Hulk craze was a dumpster-fire in the worst possible way. I didn't watch the show and I only criticized her speech to Bruce regarding catcalling (mainly because it was a lost opportunity to introduce a new character and instead of talking about her personal experiences she went on a general rant on what all women go through + she invalidated Bruce's struggles), but a lot of the criticism I heard about her was ridiculous. Remember all that madness about her twerking? That was a post-credit scene meant to be fun, nothing more, but the amount of hate I saw made my skin crawl - and a lot of it was utterly misogynistic too.

And of course her obsession with Steve and his sexual experiences didn't help. You can't have a series that is supposedly trying to make a point of saying objectifying someone is wrong and then have the title character do just that and frame it as funny.

I'll be honest though and say that I'm not a big fan of female counterparts of male heroes unless they're done well. I didn't mind Kate because she has her own personality and story and she has a great arc throughout the Hawkeye series, but Captain Carter? She's absolutely terrible and she has no story of her own: her What If ep is a copy&paste of TFA where all of Bucky's scenes are given to her. I think the criticism of "this woman is only a male version" only happens when it's done badly, as we saw in Into the Spiderverse that when done well we're all big fans of the outcome.

With that said, reading people trying to pair all women in Phase Four together as something Marvel is doing out of "representation" and claiming they're all just the "female version" of a male hero gets on my nerves, especially when those fans include Shuri in all this. Shuri was introduced in BP1, she's her own character way before she took the Black Panther suit and put it on. It sounds like that type of criticism is in bad faith because it assumes those women need to earn their place on the screen whereas the men are accepted at face value.

As long as we're getting women written well, who cares if instead of Clint we have Kate? Why is it a problem now that it's a woman when it wasn't a problem earlier when the mantle had been given to a man? Or to claim Valkyrie is replacing Thor because she's the King of New Asgard (that's not how it works, she's not female Thor now that she's ruling). It's the same bullshit I read post-Wakanda Forever: if there are more than 2 or 3 women on screen some people start whining and claiming it's all an agenda. So, do we want more women on screen or not? 🤔

Mini-Review: This was… wild. Got to finally read about Sonny Burch, Walton Goggins character in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), didn't realize he was a character originating in the comics. I was pleased the little amount of Rumiko in it, I'm not a big Rumiko fan. And I just want to know who thought it would be a good idea to make Tony Stark the Secretary of Defense.

Synopsis: As Spidey battles Dr. Minerva, he sees how Kamala is frozen in shock since she still lacks the experience for this kind of situation. He appeals to her fandom for Carol in order to snap her out of the shock by using the "Slingshot" maneuver he created with Carol. Kamala wants to keep fighting, suggesting they try a "Fastball Special" next, but Spidey tells her that they must focus on retrieving the cocoon. As they approach, one of the thugs complains that he accepted the job because Minerva wasn't an enemy of Spider-Man (since he refuses to take any jobs that involves Spider-Man), but takes advantage of the situation so he can modify his Sonic Scanner into a weapon. Spidey and Kamala try to escape with the cocoon, but Kamala's size makes her an easy target, and as she fights against Minerva the cocoon starts to hatch.

Meanwhile, as Cindy Moon ponders on her rent status, she is called to assist Natalie Long at the Fact Channel. Natalie reviews the battle between Silk and Electro and considers making her their "exclusive" just like the Bugle did with Spider-Man, but criticizes Silk's outfit as tacky. Just as Natalie gets a report on two crimes, one being Spidey's battle, Cindy escapes to deal with the other situation, determined to become the Fact Channel's exclusive by making herself a new outfit.

The cocoon hatches revealing a seemingly human baby inside, which Kamala takes to keep him safe while Spidey battles Minerva. The henchmen take down Kamala while she keeps the baby safe, but as she confronts them one of the henchmen turns against the rest, showing moral qualms about attacking someone carrying a baby. The henchman takes off his mask so that he won't scare the baby and then joins Spider-Man, who explains that Kamala knows everything about the Kree thanks to her knowledge of Carol Danvers, while the henchman is a local. This prompts Spidey to ask Minerva if she is indeed working for the Kree Empire, since it's rare that she's using local people instead of Kree Soldiers, and Minerva insists that her activities are fully sanctioned by the Kree Empire. Spidey fakes a call to Jarvis in Avengers Tower to ask the Kree if they know about Minerva's activities in order to call her bluff, which succeeds, forcing her her escape the site.

At the other robbery site, The Ringer attempts to escape, only to be taken down quickly by Silk, making her first appearance in her new outfit in front of Natalie Long and the cameras of the Fact Channel, saying that it was time for a change.

Spidey and Kamala bring the baby to the hospital so he can be taken care of with his parents. Kamala worries since they don't know what powers she might have, but Spider-Man insists that they love her and that will be a good start. He says he has to leave to make an alert at Avengers Tower about Minerva and compliments Kamala, seeing a reflection of his past self when he was a teenage superhero dealing with the double life. He encourages her, saying that she'll do fine, then confronts the henchman, who swears that he was trying to find legit work but nobody wants to hire a man with a criminal record since juvie, only to be stunned when Spidey recognizes him as Clayton Cole, his first rival, formerly known as Clash, which surprised Clayton. Spidey sees that Clayton really wants to go straight and change his life, but no one wants to hire a man with "Supervillain since fifteen" on their resume, so he gives him a card from Parker Industries, claiming that Parker believes in second chances and to tell him he sent him. He takes it and by the next day he is officially hired into Peter's company. Peter reflects that his company now gives him great power and great responsibility to help depower and reform former villains.

The Marvels: 2 New HQ Images Show Off Carol Danvers and Dar-Benn

"It's been a weird year for Disney with movies that seemed like sure things, like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, underperforming and more unlikely things, like Elemental, starting out slow and eventually making its way into the green. For Marvel, it's been a tough year; while everyone seemed to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion did not elicit praise from critics and fans alike. Between season two of Loki and The Marvels later this year, the once-thought-untouchable studio is looking to redeem itself a little bit. The Marvels will be interesting because the Discourse around Captain Marvel remains as dumb as it was four years ago, and it looks like we're in for round two later this year. We'll have to see, but for now, we have some new images featuring star and "person-who-exists-and-pisses-off-a-certain-group-of-men" Brie Larson as Carol Danvers.."

Bleeding Cool mag is owned by Avatar Press. Specialties include Horror, Sci-fi, all things Alan Moore and 'cheesecake' comics (Pin up Girls) They also released the Warrior Nun graphic novel, which a shitload of trolls helped get picked back up by Netflix. It's like they're inviting/hoping Brie Larson will be harassed again, like last time.

Larsen is a very good actress. She feels a lot more natural and relatable than some of the ones from Britain being pushed lately (Pugh, Bridges, Atwell). And maybe that was part of the reason for attacks on her. Just like Johnny Depp. American actors and actresses are being replaced by mostly British. Benedict is an exception, being that he's been abused just as much; resentment at him helping to make money for what some in the British Film Industry see as their competition. They want the big bucks, siphoned back to their economy.

What If...? (Big Hero 6 Edition)

So the next Marvel series set to release is What If...?, a series of nine episodes that will focus on alternate events and timelines that occur within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The series, based off of the comic series of the same name, will premiere on August 11th, running straight through October 6th. The show was suppose to have ten episodes in both Season 1 and 2 (which is already being worked on), but producer Brad Winderbaum mentions in an interview that they had to push an episode back because of, you guessed it, the pandemic:

"We had to push an episode into Season 2. It was just, honestly, like everything else, that was a COVID impact," Winderbaum told Collider. "There was an episode that just wouldn't hit the completion date, but luckily we do get to see it in the second season of the show."

Judging by both the poster and the trailer, we know of a few scenarios: Peggy Carter becoming Captain America, an alternate Avengers lineup battling at New York, Black Panther as Star Lord, Marvel Zombies (of course there’s zombies), and Spider-Man as the Sorcerer Supreme.  Inverse has an article breaking all of the possibilities down.

A lot of the actors who portray their characters in live action will reprise their roles for the animated series, including the late Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther/Star Lord.  Star...Panther?  Black Lord? That last one sounds wrong. Among those not coming back are Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and Dave Bautista as Drax.  Bautista was, according to the man himself, wasn’t even asked to come back to voice Drax.  Others include Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, James Spader as Ultron, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Elizabeth Olson as the Scarlet Witch, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Gweneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and various members of the Dora Milaje.  They have all apparently been confirmed to be appearing in What If...? in some form or another, but voiced by different people.

It will certainly be an interesting show, but I hope you can see where I’m going with this.

The Big Hero 6 fanbase has a lot of burning questions for the show and movie, and it’s not all just unanswered ones about what happens after the show ended.  I think collectively there are a few common “what-ifs” that we have in our minds about the team.  I think the most obvious one involves one of the Hamada brothers, and that branches off into other what-ifs as well.

Granted, not all of these are reality-altering hypotheticals like there are in the show or comics, but they can still change the course of the movie or show in a huge way.

1.) What if...Tadashi had survived the fire?

Tadashi being a survivor of the fire that takes down the exhibition hall brings up a few interesting conundrums.  Would he be scarred for life?  Would he even be able to complete school?

And if Hiro still made the team, would he end up becoming Sunfire like a lot of fans theorize?

The thing is that Callaghan knows that Tadashi died in the fire.  If he knew that he didn’t, would that change his motivations?  Would he still be using the Microbots knowing that the person that was trying to “stop” him was still alive? Alternatively, you also have...

2.) What if...Hiro had died instead of Tadashi?

Hiro was probably about two seconds away from being fully engulfed in that giant fireball.  It’s entirely plausible that he (or possibly both Hamadas) could have perished in the fire instead of his brother, which sort of leads to the same circumstances as the first question, just with different powersets.  Tadashi would no longer be tied to fire-based powers but the magnetic equipment that that Hiro currently uses.

But one has to think about whether Tadashi would be in the right state of mind to be a hero long term.  Seeing his kid brother perish in the accident would probably cause him to go insane, and perhaps the rest of the team would have to reel him in.

3.) What if...Baymax had killed Callaghan?

It’s worth noting that if Honey Lemon had been about three seconds later on getting the healthcare chip back into Baymax, this wouldn’t have been a “What If?” question.

And sure, the team would have saved the day, but at what cost?  The permanent scarring of a fourteen-year-old?  And what would have come of the major revelations after that fight concerning Project Silent Sparrow and Abigail?

Maybe they would have been the ones to build the portal to the other dimension to try to save her.  That would similar to what happened in the original manga (where Tadashi actually helps with the construction of the original portal and got sucked in as a result). 4.) What if...Baymax had saved Obake in “Countdown to Catastrophe”?

Obake dismissed Baymax after his hideout started collapsing near the end of Part 2, and you could tell that Baymax was seriously considering rescuing him before leaving him in his chair amongst the rubble.  Ultimately, however, he did leave him behind after Obake’s insistence.

Imagine what would have happened if he had gone against his programming and saved his life.

The relieved group hug on the beach would have been replaced with a disheveled (and probably a little damp) Obake.  Hiro would have been staring hiim down in disbelief.  Perhaps there would even be another fight, or at least the makings of one.

And then Obake would give himself up for arrest.

Maybe that’s where Chief Cruz could have been introduced.  It would have given a good lead into the next season, and it would give Megan’s meeting with Hiro in Season 2 a little bit more meaning.

And finally, because I’m a shipper and we have to go there:

5.) What if...Karmi had never left SFIT at the end of “City of Monsters”?

We know from the boards that Bob Schooley posted that “City of Monsters” was originally going to end very differently than what actually made the final cut.  It seemed that Karmi, in addition to getting a nonsensical boyfriend named “Flammarion”, was not suppose to leave SFIT in the early draft.

So what if Hiro had shown up to her lab, and instead of seeing this...

He saw this?

Or...something a little less dramatic?  Maybe just her packing up stuff because she’s in the process of leaving?  And Hiro had to say something in order for her to stop what she was doing? And how exactly would you achieve that? See, if that scenario happened, I think that this particular point would be where Hiro told her about being in Big Hero 6.  And of course Karmi wouldn’t believe him, even though she’s now in love with him crushing on him.

Then, he takes her to the base.

And she turns back to him with an incredulous look.

And roll credits.  What a cliffhanger to go into Season 3 with. I vaguely remember fanart depicting that exact scene (Hiro taking Karmi to the base), but I don’t remember who did it.  I would like to give them the proper credit. Season 3 would have looked totally different if that took place.  Maybe it would have been an actual season and not a bunch of mini stories.  Also...perhaps Karmi would have joined the team proper.

And maybe we would have finally had a giant canonical Karmiro moment.

...Now that is a big “What if?”.

So for AAW this year i decided to explore some QPRs since ive never done that before (does that even qualify for AAW?). So without further ado (i'll try to keep it quick) these are the relationships that give me the strongest QPR vibes theres no particular order just a attempted color gradient

1. Joan Watson and Sherlock Holmes (Elementary)

Ive talked about these two before for AAW 2019(?) so ill touch on them briefly (and i'll put the link in the notes). Disclaimer: This is a show that i watched in bits and pieces, almost primarily from reruns. The longterm focus of this show is clearly these two's relationship. In the beginning they were stuck together, and then they chose to be together but they still had issues, at one point they stop talking to each other (like legit didnt talk one of them moved away and they didnt stay in contact), were together with issues again, and then they were primarily okay, and at one point left/fled the country together even though only one of them had to. Throughout the show there are these spoken moments that really tell the depth of their relationship, from either them or other characters. Off the top of my head theres "you named a species of bee after me," "i think shes the person you love most in this world," "i consider you to be a exceptional person. So i make a exceptional effort to accommodate you," "this is your home," "i'll stay. Of course i'll stay," and that line in the picture. They dont seem to struggle that much when it comes to describing their relationship and believe "partners" sums it up best. They live together, see each other as the most important/favorite person in their lives, and are raising a child together.

2. Aziraphale and Crowley (Good Omens)

Im not sure these two count, being not human and all. In the show and in the fandom (and i assume the book) people, and they themselves, struggle to understand their relationship and on top of that they arent supposed to be on good terms with each other (one is a angel and one is a demon). Are they friends? Enemies? Boyfriends? Best friends? Crowley at one point comes to the conclusion that never having Aziraphale in his life again is worse than the end of the world. One of the definitions for a QPR is "undefinable relationship," which fits nicely here.

3. Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket (Pacific Rim)

Disclaimer: i havent seen this movie since it was in theaters and therefore dont remember much. If i had know what a QPR was when i saw this movie it would have made so much more sense. One of the background themes is strong relationships (you cant power the robots without it) which includes familial, platonic, and romantic. These two were left ambiguous, all the shots were framed in that typical "they're gonna end up together by the end" way only for nothing to confirm it at the end. It was wonderful. You follow two different gendered strangers who become super important to each other and share all their darkest secrets and memories and give each other soft looks to not end up dating at the end. Wether or not you see it as a QPR its a movie that doesnt erase m/f friendship and thats just fantastic.

4. Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel)

Before Carol disappeared it was clear she was living with Maria, her best friend, and helping her raise Monica, Maria's daughter, from a young age. Its clear her "death" greatly effected them.

5. Maka Albarn and Soul Eater Evans (Soul Eater)

I recently rewatched this show and their relationship on the surface seems like Two Kids Who Are Opposites And Dont Like Each Other Are Forced To Do Group Project type relationship but its actually so much deeper. They're roommates and best friends and each think the other one is the greatest person they know. They both have arcs centered around protecting the other. Soul states on multiple occasions that he's not into Maka, and Maka compares their partnership to her parents' marriage but never actually expects or acts like Soul is her boyfriend. Its clear they're gonna stay together for a long time coming.

6. Clint Barton and Kate Bishop (Marvel Comics)

Okay so i could say so much on this but let me start this off with a big Disclaimer: i have not read these comics, all of my knowledge comes from fan works (like the entirety of ao3 and tumblr) and wiki pages. These two. THESE TWO. Ahhh i dont even know what to say because i dont know if this is a thing where fanon versions are entirely OOC. These guys have something like a 12 year age difference, so from the outside their relationship seems weird. People (real or fictional idr) keep trying to slot them into familial roles (big brother and little sister, uncle and niece, dad and daughter) but the truth is they're friends and partners. Ya its a little weird with their age difference but if they were both 10 years older most people wouldn't even notice the age difference. Clint makes it clear to us just how much he loves Kate. She's super important to him. Just looking for pics for this post i saw so many panels displaying how close they are. Idk if its canon or not but fanfic really gave the impression Kate basically lives part time at his place. These two give me vibes that they have the kind of closeness where they could cuddle on the couch together and it wouldnt be weird. And i mean full horizontal doing a balancing act in order to get them both to stay on the couch between the backrest and the edge so they could nap. Like if one of them was married their spouse wouldnt be surprised to wake up in the morning and find them both eating breakfast in their PJs. Like these two would kiss on the mouth but it wouldnt be romantic at all just a way to express emotion. They just give me this vibe thats led to so many headcanons and idek if its canon

So now we have “BatCatPussyGate” or whatever, and I have some thoughts on it—I mean, it does intersect with my area of research.

In case you missed it: a scene where Batman goes down on Catwoman was not included in the Harley Quinn animated series, because, basically, a Batman who gives oral is bad marketing, and makes merchandise hard to sell (they did use the word “toy” in the statement, but you just know they meant action figures aka collectibles aka whatever older male fans buy). It is not even the first such scandal involving Batman in recent years, but we’ll get to that later.

There is a LOT to unpack here, so let’s get started. I’ll try to make it as coherent as I can, but this post still might be a bit of a mess.

First of all, we have to make one thing clear in which Marvel and DC differ from each other (I think I might have talked about this before, but it bears repeating): it’s what I like to call “hierarchical structure of characters.” Basically, Marvel’s structure is like the nervous system: there are interconnected nodes, but no one, clearly defined center. The Avengers are important, but so are the X-Men, and Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four… Plus Wolverine has been an X-Man and an Avenger, Spider-Man has his own lore, but he has been a member of the F4… you get the picture. A big pro of this structure is if that one node falls (a series doesn’t sell), it’s no big deal, because the system remains standing, so, basically, you can experiment with stories. If it doesn’t stick, it doesn’t stick, you move on. DC’s structure, on the other hand, is more like a spider web: you have the Holy Trinity—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman—in the middle, and everything else connects through them. And if the center falls… everything falls. Which means that even though the Holy Trinity has HUGE cultural visibility (greater than of any single Marvel character), they are pretty much set in their ways. They cannot change much, because what they are now is what sells, and any significant change in representation might lead to failure, which then in turn would lead to the failure of the whole spider web. (I have a like 40 pages long paper on how, because of this, Wonder Woman needs to continuously appeal to both the male—sexualizing male gaze—and the female—identifying female gaze—gazes, compared to Carol Danvers, who keeps jumping between the two ends throughout her publication history.)

And within this scheme, Batman is the picture of hypermasculinity. He is powerful, intelligent, cannot do wrong, closed off from his emotions, and women fall for him, even if he cannot properly commit to a romantic relationship (this last thing is something that goes back to the Silver Age of comics, because male heroes just cannot have love, because nothing can be more important than their vigilantism, while female superheroes are lesser, because they are ready to hang up their capes for love).

Then what does academia has to say about this? Note: I’m going to be talking a lot about stuff that film criticism came up with, but since both movies and comics are a visual narrative medium, I’ve found that you can pretty much project everything about movies to comics.

So, first of all, one big shortcoming of feminist film criticism is that (not entirely unjustly) it is mostly focused on how women are portrayed in movies—especially how they are oppressed and objectified, while it leaves men/male characters… unstudied. Masculinity studies exists, but it’s pretty new and marginal. The availability of male bodies in film to the female gaze is also mostly unexamined (but I’ve dabbled in it! Talking about sexy male bodies in a detached academic manner is fun!), and it’s somewhat of a problem.

Richard Dyer studied the peculiarities of male pinups, and he came up with three instabilities: 1, it violates the codes of looking (because traditionally it’s the men who look, and women who are being looked at), 2, it rejects passivity (because being looked at is read as being passive, and the male body is supposed to be active, so, usually, male and female pinups are posed in a totally different way), and 3, it breaks the myth of the phallus (male power signified by the penis)—because once we start looking into it, we’ll discover that the phallus just… cannot live up to the hype. Therefore not studying the male body/male presence and focusing on the female body/presence actually serves the patriarchy, because the phallus can only keep its central, dominant position until it remains unexamined. Once we look into it, we discover that it’s not that great, and then we can displace patriarchy.

And then what does it mean in practice? Here comes the other Batman scandal I mentioned: about three years ago, DC came up with their new line of comics, where the big draw was the total lack of censoring. It was promised to be super bloody and full of gore and cursing and stuff. The first series of this line was Batman Damned, and the first issue featured the… batawang. I mean Batman’s penis. Returning from some mission, Batman starts undressing the moment he steps into the Batcave, stripping naked, and on some panels one can clearly see… little Bruce. It had no point. It could have easily been brushed out, and it would not have looked out of place. Or course, the internet had a field day with it, about the same way they are having a field day with his lack of oral sex now. It grew so big that within a couple of days DC announced that they’d airbrush out the batawang in the second printing and in any subsequently sold digital editions (which then caused the price of the first print editions skyrocket, to some $300, I believe). So to sum up: DC showed Batman’s penis for shock value. Seeing Batman’s penis wasn’t awe-inspiring, a show of power, but the butt of the joke—because examining the phallus shows that it cannot live up to the hype! So Batman’s power, his standing as a masculine ideal/male power fantasy was misplaced in a moment. (Something similar was happening behind the scenes of the Watchmen series as well: when Tom Mison had a full frontal nude scene, they actually used a penis-double—as there was no shot where his face and penis was shown at the same time—now imagine the casting for that role!)

In some way, this is happening now as well—not showing Batman performing oral sex is not because it “hurts toy sales;” it’s because it breaks the myth of the phallus, thus it breaks the myth of the Batman as an immaculate male power fantasy. Batman receives—power, admiration, and, of course, sex. But within the framework of sex, he needs to be the one that dominates, the one that mostly on the receiving end of the pleasure. What is important is that 1, he gets the woman and 2, he gets off. Whether the woman gets off is unimportant within this framework, because it doesn’t serve the myth of Batman/the male power fantasy. Within the fantasy, women need to want to sleep with him because he is Batman (because the male reader identifies with Batman, and he needs to feels as if the women in the comic want him just because he is him/Batman), but if he performs oral sex on the woman, it presupposes an active need for effort from his part from her to want him. It gives her agency, which elevates her to a partner, not an object to-be-looked-at.

So if Batman performs oral sex, his body will be put on display as something beyond the realm of the male power fantasy; it will be examined, and thus determined he is not all-powerful. His dominance within the narrative will be questioned. The role of the woman will be elevated. The patriarchal dominance displaced. So, yeah, that’s why Batman can’t give oral—not because it will hurt the toy sales.

I mean, it might. But because it will hurt Batman as a hypermasculine ideal

Honestly I enjoyed the dark world if anything just for the Loki content/development, I’ve never been interested in mcu!Jane because she’s just used to further Thor’s plot with inconsistent characterization. But it’s disappointing that Natalie Portman would choose THIS movie to come back in. Like...why?? I don’t trust Taika with any topics of importance, but especially not something as serious as cancer, something that hits home for a LOT of people. Whatever garbage he spews into the movie will just be praised by “ThOr FaNs” or paraded as “jUsT a JoKe” either way, but it really does suck.

The female characters in the mcu have always been given shitty storylines and underpowered for the sake of the plot (bc let’s be honest, if they were given their full power the movie would be over in 5mins bc the plot is so fucken weak), and then both Gamora AND Natasha are tragically killed and don’t get to come back - unless it’s a prequel movie or every ounce of character development they had is erased. And they bring in Carol, which is fine, but the marketing team made it seem like she was the First and Only female superhero in the mcu, when that’s just not true??? Natasha has been there since the beginning and, as you said, she had to literally DIE to get her own film. Gamora isn’t even the real Gamora we all came to know and love. Wanda is whitewashed and severely underpowered. Valkyrie is an alcoholic slave-trader whose “redemption” is wrapped up in getting revenge. Carol Danvers is Tony Stark 2.0. There’s no happy ending for Nebula, who should’ve been the one to kill Thanos. Who handles these characters?? WHO?? I JUST WANNA TALK.

I refuse to watch any new spiderman movie from the mcu. I just won’t. The way they introduced Peter to their universe was to literally make him a tonky fanboy who was blackmailed into going to a foreign country as a teenager, who also was not told what exactly he was fighting for/against and then abandoned by the guy who brought him there. And then his whole storyline from then on is just Iron Man Jr. and copying Miles Morales like. Why. Just why. They killed tonky, but to what end? What was the point if they were just going to bring him back for cameos, spin-offs, prequels, and cram him into every marvel movie after?? Sure, the public only knows what has been released. They don’t know all the shit tonky is responsible for. At the same time, they know a lot? All the shit and murder he caused in the middle east? The destruction of Sokovia? How many supervillains does tonky have to create before we stop making monuments? ENOUGH.

The mcu has a gross history of sexism, racism, and terrible storytelling. But arguably one of my biggest problems with their movies, is that they show you who the bad guy actually is (who’s not the Big Bad of the film, but the Hero themself or -most times- the Government) and paint them as good. There was nuance to Captain America bc, while he IS pro military to an extent, his story is only pro military/government when those parties are actually doing their jobs. When shield is infested with Hydra, Steve says it ALL has to go. There’s no allegiance or hidden loyalty to the government in any way. Whereas with the Iron Man movies, especially the first, it’s pro military through and through. The message is “it’s okay when WE kill people, but not anyone else”. That theme is carried through most of the movies in general where you’re expected to see the Government as good and trustworthy. And while there ARE subtle hints that they’re corrupt or not so trustworthy, they’re so subtle that 99% of their fanbase misses the point. And marvel seems to be okay with that.
