Femmes of tumblr, what does femme identity mean to YOU?

I’m a baby femme so I’m still new to this and would love to hear some more personal thoughts on femme identity <3

To me:

Femme is taking femininity in a cishet society and viewing it through an undeniably queer lens. When I express myself, I do so with intentions completely unrelated to society’s expectation of fem-aligned people. I am soft, and gentle, flowing and warm. And it is not with the intention of the “American dream” that I am easy on the eyes for cishet men, like something to look at through a bakery shop window for one man to eventually choose me for the taking.

It is with connection to my sapphic identity, ESPECIALLY in relation to my community (butches and other femmes alike). And yes, butchfemme romantic relationships are beautiful and holy, but also, it’s about family to me. That is where I am safe. This is the same culture that our lesbian predecessors lived in. Femmes and butches protect one another in a manner that you just don’t see every day.

In my relationship with my masc girlfriend, we compliment each other so well. I bake her cookies and send pictures whenever I buy a new dress. I deliver letters covered in lipstick prints and my perfume. She cracks open geodes to find pretty crystals for me. She has plans to build me a gazebo with her own two hands just because I said I always wanted one. She’s ready to throw hands at the drop of a hat to protect me. She makes me feel safer and more understood than anyone ever could.

It has also given me unprecedented levels of confidence in confirming my femme identity as a major middle finger to patriarchy. I saw a tiktok by another femme (@toothfairyfemme) describing how they want their femininity to be so extreme it makes men squirm, that it is sickly sweet and nauseating and “too much”, and oh my god YES. My femininity is PERFORMANCE. I want society to see me and feel threatened by how MUCH I am. I will not tone it down, or try to fit into a little box of what is expected of me. I am unapologetically lesbian and femme and I WILL NOT SHUT UP!!!
