It was Y/N's last shift at the bar in Madripoor, as the owners surprised them with the sudden closure of the bar at the end of the working week.

Bucky and Sam (who was somewhat reluctant to come along) walked into the bar ten minutes before closing. They saw Y/N dancing behind the bar with the blonde curly-haired woman and a redhead woman, as they sang along with the title track from Lady Marmalade - it was one Sam had forced Bucky to watch.

"Voulez-vous coucher avec mou, ce soir? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?" The three women sang as Bucky and Sam made their way to the bartop.

"You do know what that means, don't you, babydoll?" Bucky asks, looking at his wife with a smirk.

She looks over at him with a matching smirk. "I'm surprised you know what it means, considering you were always skipping French class for that girl Dotty."

The smirk on Bucky's face slipped like a mask. "You knew about that?" His face pales considerably.

"Oh, please, James. I didn't know until you confirmed it," she tells him, leaning over and pressing a kiss to his nose. She had very nearly played him when Bucky reached his hands up to cup her face and plant a kiss on her lips.

When he pulled away, he looked her dead in the eyes. "I swear to you, babydoll, nothing happened with Dotty. Nothing happened with any of them. I know I had a bit of a reputation-"

Y/N snorted. "A bit? I'm pretty sure there was writing on the girls' bathroom at the diner. For a good time, find James Barnes. You were a total ladies' man."

"There was only one lady I wanted, and I married her."

"She better not find you here with me then. I think she might get very jealous."

Bucky chuckled to himself as the group behind the bar completed their shift for the final time. Y/N was counting the money in the till as Yasmine stood beside her with a calculator counting card receipts, whilst Mark went to properly lock the door (unlike last time when Bucky was able to get in).

Y/N finished counting the money and then looked at their manager (who had made a surprise visit, most likely to make sure they all got paid).

Their manager started counting out the money for their wages, as Y/N walked over to where Bucky and Sam were standing, waiting for her. "How are you, babydoll?" Bucky asks her, wrapping his metal arm around her waist and running his fingers through her hair - they had learnt what happens when Bucky's metal hand gets entangled with her hair. Safe to say, that was a somewhat embarrassing situation...

"I'm OK," she says half-heartedly. "I'm just going to have to find somewhere new to work," she tells him, as her manager hands her a small stack of $50s and $20s.

"Why don't you come back to Brooklyn with me?" He offers, slipping her purse from her shoulder, before handing over her wallet from said purse.

Y/N considers this. "Why not? It would be a nice change from this place."

Bucky tightly wrapped his arms around his wife. "You coming home with me, babydoll?"

"Did you honestly expect anything else?"

Bucky unlocked the door to his apartment, holding Y/N's suitcase in one hand with his backpack thrown over his shoulder.

"Welcome home, babydoll," he tells her, watching as his wife walks into the apartment. He sets down her suitcase and his bag as she takes a look around the room.

"James?"

"Yeah, babydoll?"

"What's that?"

'That' she was referring to just so happened to be the pile of sheets and lone pillowcase on the floor.

How the hell does he explain this to his wife...?

"Erm... that's where I sleep."

"Where's your bed?"

"In the bedroom," he says, looking away from her to their belongings.

He didn't see Y/N pursed her lips and mull over his words. For all he knew, they were going to be sleeping in separate places until he could finally deem himself worthy of sleeping in the same bed as his wife.

"James? Where did you go, my love?" She asks, which is when Bucky notices she is toe-to-toe with him, cradling his face with her hands. "You completely missed what I was saying."

"I'm sorry, babydoll."

She giggled and pressed a kiss to his nose before looking at him in his eyes. "We're going to take this at your speed, I don't mind sleeping on the floor, I just want to make sure you know you can talk to me and tell me when you're ready to sleep on the sofa and then possibly in our bed."

Bucky is silent as he takes her words in. What did he do to deserve her? He couldn't even form words to tell her just how much he loves her. So, he wrapped her up in the tightest hug known, hoping it was enough for her to understand the depth of his feelings.

I like that a big part of the Sambucky relationship is often just Sam giving Bucky full permission to be a little fucked up. Not in the sense that he recognizes his mental problems, but also because he sometimes just shrugs and allows Bucky's worst instincts to take over. (Which is mostly a fandom thing, but a small part of canon too, since Sam went with Bucky's plan to free Zemo with very little push-back, for example..)

It gave me the idea for a story where after Hydra everyone around Bucky wants him to move on from his traumas and heal, but Sam gives him the space to also be furious and unhinged about that. Like... all the other people would say: "what they did to you was awful, but the best revenge is to live a happy life <3". And Sam's like... "no, the best revenge is to wake them up with a gun to the temple in the middle of the night and to burn down their home, actually. here's a lighter, are you free this weekend, handsome?".

I don't mean to say that other people don't understand Bucky's anger, but they believe it'd be healthier for him to deal with the pain only by finding hobbies, adopting a pet, eating nice food etc. Whereas Sam offers all those things with an extra dose of pure vengeance. One night he takes Bucky out to a nice restaurant. The next night he stands aside as Bucky beats the shit out of some doctor, who experimented on him in 1989 and then helps him cover it up.

This dynamic would probably work better in a AU with no powers where they're regular people and where Bucky's been kidnapped or integrated into a cult that ruined his life. But it could apply to the canon too, in some ways.

I just like the the idea of all the well-meaning people in Bucky life trying to put as big of a distance between him and his abusers as possible... While Sam - who everyone sees as a rational almost-pacifist with a lot of empathy - helps his boyfriend hunt these abusers for sport.

For the ABO trope I'm such a sucker for courting hc/fics. What's your hc for how Gale courts Bucky? How long were they friends before Gale decides that "yes this is the one, this is the one I'm gonna marry and have babies with" then promptly have a tiny bit (massive) panic attack because how does one go about courting an omega like John Clarence Egan???

I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED! I also love courting fics, so I've thought long and hard about this.

In regards to how and when Buck decides to court Bucky, I think it's Curt who kicks his ass into gear. Gale would never be able to make himself reach out like that to Bucky because Bucky is so perfect and has never seemed to want to settle down like that in Gale's eyes. Curt knows better. He says something along the lines of "If you don't do it soon, I'm gonna. And I'm gonna romance the shit out of him until he forgets your name." (Not that Bucky ever would forget about his Buck, but the threat is enough to have Gale actually scared to his boots.) (Also I hc Curt as an Omega, and Bucky isn't so waylaid by stereotypes about if Omegas can court each other, so if Curt tried, he may have actually accepted. Gale knows this. Gale fears this.)

Gale is an emotionally repressed kind of guy who needs his ass kicked into gear (please see the train scene where he doesn't confess his love and friendship to Bucky until he actually thinks they're both gonna die), and he turns into the world's biggest anxious mess now that he has decided to court Bucky. It keeps him up at night.

Buck starts to anonymously court Bucky when they're still in the US, before they're both Majors, but after flight school, I think. They've been friends a while, and Buck's been in love with Bucky nearly the whole time, I'd say.

He's still too unsure of himself to loudly declare himself, so he wants to quietly and softly court Bucky for now. He leaves a small bundle of flowers (baby's breathe and white carnations) on Bucky's bunk with a small unsigned letter asking permission to court him, which Bucky spends the whole day crowing about. Bucky stares at those flowers like they're the prettiest things in the world, showing them off to anyone who walks by. Curt jokingly snags a branch of baby's breath and tucks a few of the buds in Bucky's curls, which nearly sends Buck to his knees. Bucky starts to do that whenever he can, and boy does he look like a vision with pretty curls and pretty flowers. Buck leaves more flowers on his pillow, and Bucky wears them.

Gale has to write Marge for help because he's losing his mind, and if he asks Curt, Curt will say what he would do, which Gale can't handle because he's possessive and still scared Curt will make good on his threats. She says to just talk to Bucky, which Gale can't do because he's an idiot.

Buck starts to leave more letters for Bucky with more flowers and things that remind Gale of Bucky (a ribbon the same shade of blue as Bucky's eyes, a book about baseball, new laces for his boots because Bucky was complaining about them, things that show he cares and listens to Bucky). It's only once Bucky actually learns that he'll be heading to England first that Buck starts to ramp things up. It sends him into a bit of tailspin when he learns Bucky is going to be alone in England for weeks without him. Marge urges him to make his move, and Curt stares at him with a clear look of 'now or never idiot,' so he makes his move. He leaves a scented blanket on his bunk, as close as he can get to signing his name really.

Buck hides out waiting for Bucky to find the blanket and find him. He's actually scared Bucky will reject him, so he goes where he thinks no one will find him at the edge of one of the runways. But of course Bucky finds him, and Bucky tackles him in a hug, giddy and happy that the person he'd loved since they met was asking to court him.

"Took you long enough," Bucky breathes out just before he dips down and kisses Buck for the first time. Bucky hadn't had any clue about who was courting him, but he'd had one person he wanted it to be.

Just before Bucky leaves for England, Buck gives him a small silver ring with one sapphire and one turquoise stone inlaid (both stones are considered like wearing a piece of the sky which is just too poetic for me to handle). It's their birthstones, and it's the closest Buck can get to a mating mark until after the war. Bucky loops the ring onto his dog tags, and when he misses Buck, he presses the ring to his lips. (Not to make this angst, but when Bucky thinks Buck had gone down/died, he shakily pulls the ring off the chain and puts it on his finger. Wearing it is the closest he can get to Buck now, he thinks.)

I want someone to caress Bucky's cheek before cupping his tenderly. Looking at him with hooded eyes filled with anguish. Looking at his blue blue eyes so dull from the magnesium flare they have before. And say with voice so soft and tender "Who did this to you?"

And Bucky would laugh it off, giving the excuse that he is fine, had never felt better. But that someone heard the crack in his tone and barely noticible shake of his fingers.

Rage will burns bright and hot within them but none is shown, so they will slowly pull Bucky's face down and kiss each of his eyelids. "Are they alive? Because they won't be for long"
