Mort Safe - A New Audio Drama
Tumblr media
[ID: A semi-realistic drawing of a hand, in the palm of which sits a lit candle. It’s flame illuminates the darkness around it, but the wax is dripping down onto the hand, and slowly turns red as it seeps down the wrist, mimicking veins. Above it is written in curling brassy letters, “Mort Safe”]
Ethics, Edinburgh, Exhumation. 1829.
Mort Safe is a new, ten episode audio drama coming in 2023, created by Oran Talbot and Sam Drake.
Edinburgh. 1829. The medical curiosity of the western world has taken hold of the city, with doctors-to-be travelling from as far as America to study at the prestigious university. However, budding young surgeons can be impatient, and with the Anatomy Act still a few years off, the medical schools are only granted one body per year on which to conduct their studies. Enter Cillian Hayes, an ambitious student with lofty expectations, Adelaide Farris, a young woman finding herself at the helm of her deceased father’s candle making business, and Jules Green, the unfortunate soul who seems to have found themself at the wrong end of the gravedigger’s shovel. Mort Safe is a show about how far we’ll go to achieve our goals, and the culture we build around death.

Coffin dolls found at Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh, 1836.
17 coffins were found, but unfortunately only eight survive today due to damage or simply being lost. According to the National Museum of Scotland, “The tiny coffins were arranged under slates in three tiers: two tiers of eight and one solitary coffin on the top. Each coffin, only 95mm in length, contained a little wooden figure, carved and dressed in custom-made clothes that had been stitched and glued around them.”
There are a few theories for what the dolls represent, some at the time believed they were a curse, meant to literally entomb enemies, whereas many other theories involve a more positive version of this, believing the coffins were meant to put distant deceased friends to rest, or giving those lost at sea a Christian burial. A popular theory is that the coffins represent the victims of Burke and Hare, infamous murderers who sold the bodies of their victims to science, profiting from the lack of legal bodies supplied to doctors. The pair killed at least 16 people, their victims were always vulnerable, as they targeted the elderly, immigrants, and disabled people. The number of victims lines up with the original number of coffins enough for many people to support this theory.
For more information, check the NMS website- I can’t post links but the article is called ‘The mystery of the miniature coffins’!

Henry’s past headcanons
Please note all of them involve historical events and people.
Before he was shot in 1814:
He treated discharged military personnel who fought in the Napoleonic wars
He met Dr James Barry at a medical conference in London 1813. They become good friends and believed in better environments for sick patients to be treated. Henry tells James that he bears a resemblance to an Irish woman called Margaret he met in 1806. He treated her after she was thrown onto the street by a racist man. While she was recovering, Henry lend her some books about medicine and was curious about what he was doing to make her better. Some time later at a private meeting, James reveals that he is Margaret and that he chose to be a man. Henry responds by saying that he is a brave person for becoming a man and a doctor. He also promises James to never tell everyone that he was AFAB.
He met the Chevalier D’Eon as a teenager in the 1790s. During the meeting the Chevalier taught him how to improve on his fencing and had a conversation in French.
After he was shot:
He was murdered by Burke and Hare and almost got dissected since they sold their victims to be dissected for science.
He took part in the Peterloo protest since he believed in equality for all.
In 1865, Henry hears from the staff working at the hospital that the acclaimed Dr James Barry is terribly ill and close to death. Henry visits him and James (now about 75–76) is amazed that he never aged. He then proceeds to tell him about his immortality and his first death back in 1814. James promises never to tell Henry about his secret.

On  Wednesday 28th January 1829, the notorious William Burke was hanged in Edinburgh.
He and his accomplice William Hare, who escaped the death penalty by turning King’s Evidence against Burke, were caught murdering people in the city and selling the cadavers to anatomist Robert Knox.
The hanging took place in Edinburgh at Libberton’s Wynd, this street ran from High Street/Lawnmarket down to Cowgate, roughly where the East pavement of George IV Bridge is now.
Below is the story The Scotsman ran about the execution
Pursuant to sentence passed in the High Court of Justiciary, Burke this morning suffered the last sentence of the law, at the common place of execution, head of Libberton’s Wynd.
From the hour in which he heard that his associate Hare was to be admitted an evidence against him, he abandoned all hopes of acquittal, and resigned himself to his awful fate. When consigned to the silence and solitude of his cell, he eagerly availed himself of the consolations of religion and sedulously prepared for the awful change he was soon to undergo. Sincerely anxious to hear of the premises of pardon and acceptance which the gospel holds out to the contrite and repentant sinner, on one occasion when a Catholic Priest and the Rev. Mr Marshall arrived at once at the jail, he exclaimed “admit them both”.
In a short time, however, he dispensed with the visits of Mr Marshall, and resolved to die professing the faith of his forefathers. Thought he talked freely over his murders at all time, he spent much of his time in reading such books as were left by his spiritual instructors, and in deep and serious meditation.
Heavily manacled as he was, and confined to the murderer’s diet – bread and water – he uniformly manifested an astonishing calmness and contentment. One gentleman, by whom he was visited, remarked that his cell was very cold, “Yes, yes,” he promptly replied, “but since matters have come to this, I must just bear it all.”
Though dreadfully afflicted by an excruciating disease and tormented by the approach of an ignominious death, he acted with deliberation; and talked with perfect coherence.
Shortly after eight o’clock, the procession set out for the place of execution. Bailies Crichton and Small, with a party of town officers, first ascended the scaffold and they were followed by Burke, supported by two Catholic Clergymen. He was dressed in decent black clothes, and was perfectly firm and composed. The moment he appeared the crowd set up an appalling shout, which continued for several minutes. The murderer and the Catholic clergymen knelt down and spent a few minutes in devotion. During the time a deep silence prevailed among the assemblage, but the devotions were succeeded by vehement cheering from every quarter, mingled with groans and hisses. When the cheers had subsided, the wretched man was assailed with every epithet of contempt and abhorrence.
As soon as the executioner proceeded to do his duty, the cries of “Burke him, Burke him, give him no rope,” and many others of a similar complexion, were vociferated in voices loud with indignation. Burke in the meantime, stood perfectly unmoved, and gazed around till the cap was drawn over his face, and shut the world forever from his view.
The executioner having completed his preparations and placed the signal in Burke’s hand, the magistrates ministers, and attendants left the scaffold. The crowd again set up another long and loud cheer, which was followed by cries for “Hare, Hare, where is Hare.” Burke lifted his hands and ejaculated a prayer of a few sentences then dropped the napkin and momently the drop fell.
The struggle was neither long nor apparently severe, but at every convulsive motion, a loud huzza arose from the multitude, which was several times repeated after the last agonies of humanity were past.

Crimes That Shocked Britain (Edinburgh)
Tumblr media
Child Killer Robert Black On 8 July 1988, Caroline Hogg, 5, was playing at the fairground on Portobello Promenade. Only, after riding the carousel, the little girl disappeared. Playmates had spotted her walking away with a 'scruffy' man who had paid the 15p for her carousel turn. Ten days later, her naked body was found in a Leicestershire ditch.
Susan Maxwell, 11, had been killed in similar circumstances a year earlier. Police linked the cases and in 1990, they got a breakthrough.
Delivery driver, Robert Black was caught with a 6-year-old in his van in a Scottish borders village. Detectives then spent four years piecing together his past movements.
It turned out that the day Caroline vanished, Black had been delivering posters nearby. In 1994, Black was jailed for life for the abduction and murder of Caroline, Susan, and Sarah Harper, 10, in 1986.
In 2011, he was convicted of the 1981 sexual assault and murder of nine-year-old Jennifer Cardy. Police suspected that he'd actually murdered many more, but they will never know for sure. Black died at the age of 68 behind bars in January 2016.

Burke and Hare Irishmen William Burke and William Hare met in 1827 when Burke moved into Hare's Edinburgh boarding house. On 25 November 1827, an elderly lodger died owing Hare £4. Burke and Hare stole his body and sold it to anatomist Dr Robert Knox st the Royal College of Surgeons.
In early 1828, another lodger was dying of a fever. The men smothered him, selling his corpse to Dr Knox for £10. Burke and Hare murdered 16 people over the following year, selling their corpses.
The body of their final victim, Mrs. Docherty, was discovered before Burke and Hare sold it. In court, Hare blamed Burke, in return for his freedom. Burke was hanged in January 1829. Hare fled Scotland and Knox was cleared.

Murder of Suzanne Pilley On 4 May 2010, Suzanne Pilley, 38, vanished while making her way to work in Thistle Street, Edinburgh.
A murder inquiry was launched police suspected Suzanne's ex-lover and colleague David Gilroy, Suzanne had recently ended their affair. Officers believed jealous Gilroy lured her into the office's underground car park as she arrived for work, then dumped her body in the countryside.
In June 2010, Gilroy was charged with murder, later convicted, and jailed for life. In 2012, his appeal against the sentencing was rejected. Despite searches, including an area near Loch Long, Suzanne's body has never been found.

Donald Forbes In 1958, Donald 'Ginger' Forbes was sentenced to death for murder. He'd bludgeoned nightwatchman Alan Fisher, 66, to death while robbing a fishing factory.
Only, public letters of support for Forbes poured in, and his sentence was reduced to life. He was released in May 1970. Weeks later, he stabbed ex-soldier Charles Gilroy, 27, to death during a pub brawl.
With the death penalty now outlawed, Forbes was convicted of murder, sentenced to life again. He was released in 1998, only to be jailed for 12 years in 2003 for running a cocaine and cannabis factory. Forbes, 73, died in 2008, handcuffed to a hospital bed.

World's End Murders In October 1977, Helen Scott and Christine Eadie, both 17, were raped and killed after a night at Edinburgh's World's End pub. For decades, the case went cold - until a forensic review found a DNA profile, matching Angus Sinclair.
Sinclair had been serving life since 1982 for raping and indecently assaulting 11 girls. He'd received another life sentence in 2001, after DNA matched him to the 1978 murder of Mary Gallacher.
In 2007, he stood trial accused of murdering Helen and Christine, with his late brother-in-law Gordon Hamilton, who'd died in 1996. The case collapsed, Sinclair was acquitted. However, in November 2014, Sinclair was re-tried, finally convicted, and jailed for life.

Did you know that Hare actually snitched Burke out for the 16 notorious murders throughout Edinburgh in the 19th century?
The police caught Hare and questioned him under suspicion. They offered him immunity if he could snitch Burke out, which he did. The police were under pressure to catch the killers but they had no physical evidence to prosecute either of them, so had to resort to this method.
Burke was hanged shortly afterwards. And Hare escaped with a new identity. And vanished in history.
