Léon Cogniet (1794-1880) "Métabus et Camille" In Virgil's Aeneid, Camilla is the daughter of King Metabus and Casmilla. Driven from his throne, Metabus is chased into the wilderness by armed Volsci, his infant daughter in his hands. The river Amasenus blocked his path, and, fearing for his child's welfare, Metabus bound her to a spear. He promised Diana that Camilla would be her servant, a warrior virgin. He then safely threw her to the other side, and swam across to retrieve her. The baby Camilla was suckled by a mare, and once her "first firm steps had [been] taken, the small palms were armed with a keen javelin; her sire a bow and quiver from her shoulder slung." She was raised in her childhood to be a huntress and kept the companionship of her father and the shepherds in the hills and woods.

Camilla is maybe one of the greatest character in the whole Vergil's masterpiece. She's an Italic warrior and queen of a little Italic tribe named "Volsci" and she can be assimilated with plenty of lost poems about the Troy war talking about the Amazons' queen Pentesileia, daughter of Mars himself. The way they both fight: with both bow and arrows and spears, and with one breast exposed, suggest the obvious inspiration Vergil took from the Greek tales to create his own character. She's the human daughter of the King Metabus and Queen Casmilla -who probably died after giving birth to her- but she's protected and sacred to the huntress goddess Diana (Artemis). She fights along with Turnus against Aeneas but she's bound to a tragic fate of death by the prophecy claiming the birth of Rome, but her death is a matter of tricks since she couldn't be killed in a honest fight due to her unique skill, making her the greatest warrior of the whole poem and the only one claiming a whole book to her.

Frosinone: vernissage per il Parco dell'Arte al Matusa. Frosinone. Una platea festante ha salutato, ieri, l'inaugurazione del Parco dell'Arte del Matusa. Al vernissage, insieme al Sindaco di Frosinone Riccardo Mastrangeli, erano presenti l'on. Nicola Ottaviani, il questore Domenico Condello, il direttore dell'Accademia di Belle Arti Loredana Rea, il dirigente dell'IIS Bragaglia Fabio Giona, gli assessori Rossella Testa e Angelo Retrosi, i consiglieri Corrado Renzi e Andrea Turriziani, Alfio Borghese e una nutrita rappresentanza degli alunni dei quattro comprensivi e del Cpia di Frosinone, accompagnati dai propri docenti. Madrina dell'iniziativa, Adriana Russo. "Cultura e bellezza si incontrano in questo bellissimo parco – ha dichiarato il Sindaco Mastrageli - Il Parco Matusa, già 'casa' dei Canarini, è diventato, dal 2018, un punto di riferimento per l'incontro e l'aggregazione intergenerazionale di giovani, famiglie, bambini, anziani e sportivi. È oggetto di un importante progetto di riqualificazione, che prevede tra l'altro un nuovo impianto di illuminazione ecosostenibile e la creazione di un'area polivalente per il fitness". Quattro le nuove sculture, figurative e astratte, nel Parco del Matusa di Frosinone, che sono state installate allo scopo di ampliare il Parco dell'arte, voluto dall'ex primo cittadino Nicola Ottaviani e confermato fortemente dal sindaco Riccardo Mastrangeli. Di Enrico Roberti "L'Espressione del Libero Arbitrio" in ferro, del 2021, opera che è stata esposta anche nella Biennale di Arte Contemporanea del 2023 ad Anagni; di Leonardo Antonucci "Immutabili Legami", in marmo di Carrara, del 2023, che l'affianca contribuendo a ribadire l'importanza della figura geometrica nella nuova tendenza dell'arte internazionale. Luciano Sarracino, con "La Chiave", bronzo del 2016, propone un elemento importante della sua ricerca portata avanti anche con una scultura che è stata installata presso l'ospedale di Frosinone. Pierluigi Proietti, con "Il Calciatore", acciaio commerciale del 2022, torna al tema originario del Matusa, proponendo una doppia immagine di quelli che sono stati i primi protagonisti a vivere i campi verdi del vecchio stadio di Frosinone. Le opere sono state donate dagli autori e sistemate sui basamenti a cura del Presidente della Biennale di Arte Contemporanea, Alfio Borghese, in collaborazione con l'Assessore alla Cultura Simona Geralico e il Sindaco Riccardo Mastrangeli. I lavori sono stati diretti dall'architetto Bruno Sacchetti. Le quattro opere si affiancano così alle due già installate al centro dell'ingresso nel 2020. L'opera più alta, circa due metri, di Elena Sevi, in bronzo, raffigura Camilla, regina dei Volsci, la mitologica amazzone figlia leggendaria della nostra terra, citata da Virgilio, Dante, Boccaccio, Torquato Tasso e altri poeti e raffigurata da tanti pittori nel corso dei secoli. L'opera è fortemente dedicata al coraggio delle donne, alle donne guerriere e agli uomini che non hanno paura di amarle. La scultura è stata immaginata come se fosse stata rinvenuta nel greto del fiume Amaseno, carezzata dall'acqua e dai secoli. Elena Sevi, diplomata in scultura presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Frosinone, ha esposto in Italia e in tutto il mondo. La seconda, Viola, mezzobusto in bronzo alto 80 centimetri, rappresenta le donne violentate dai militari marocchini incorporati nell'esercito francese, i famigerati goumier, ai quali, dopo aver attraversato la linea Gustav tedesca a Cassino, il generale Alphonse Juin avrebbe concesso 50 ore di diritto di preda. Lo stupro come ricompensa, il furto e la violenza come premio. Ore terribili per le popolazioni inermi e stremate della Ciociaria e non solo. Gente che aspettava fiduciosa l'arrivo dei liberatori e non il nemico. Sono state stuprate più di 60 mila donne, molte uccise insieme a mariti, bambini e genitori. E ancora sofferenza e morte, dopo le violenze subite, per suicidi e malattie. Viola, testimone e testimonianza di questi atroci delitti, è stata realizzata dalle allora allieve del Liceo Artistico di Frosinone: Cecilia e Veronica Caponera, Sara Carbone, Valentina Coccarelli, Giulia Iacovacci, Alice Napoli e Michela Reali nel 2015, in creta, in occasione della manifestazione "Sculture in Piazza" a piazzale Vittorio Veneto, ed è stata poi fusa in bronzo da Alfio Borghese. Classicism: (Classical) What is your favorite Greek or Roman myth and what’s it about?

There’s a lot I really love, for different reasons. Anything to do with Medea is always a hit, and I do like Orpheus and Euridice, basic as it may be. I also have a fascination with Apollo and Daphne, mostly because it was the first bit of Ovid we read in the original in my Latin class in undergrad, and (as is usual for him) there’s something so horrifying about the beauty of the language as it relates Daphne’s pain and fear when Apollo chases her that the images stay with you forever. [For those who don’t know, Daphne is transformed into a Laurel tree to escape his grasp.] Thinking more about specific works, Anne Carson’s take on Elektra in the Oresteia connected with me in a very particular way. And on a lighter note, I would marry Camilla of the Volsci in a heartbeat.

Romanticism: (Emotion) What is the most impulsive thing you’ve done, or that you want to do?

That’s a tough one, because on the whole I think I’m the sort of person who overthinks things by a mile. The ‘want to do’ is odd because if you think on it then it’s not impulsive anymore, is it? I might like to be more impulsive in my relationships with people though. And the most impulsive thing I wish I’d done is go back to Cambridge early in the fall and do my online semester from there, hanging out with my friends to the extent that distancing and eventual lockdown permitted.
