This morning, I asked the cards "What journey am I beginning today?" I drew the Knight of Wands from The Tarot of Curious Creatures. 🦎 This Knight moves forward with joy. She looks at the world as something to explore, not conquer. Lizard brains tend to be overly cautious, but she is a balance between caution and exploration. My Soul’s agenda (2021)

Writing is my soul’s work, and I keep a day job because I am totally unwilling to compromise my writing. Writing for someone else means facilitating someone else’s agenda. But I realised after a time that I don’t care about anyone else’s agenda. I’m only interested in my own agenda. My own Soul’s agenda. To give an illustration of the importance of my Soul agenda to me: not even Michael could tell me what to do with my Soul. I think that’s as clear an illustration as I could possibly give: that the person most important to me in my life, and the person who’s soul I feel the closest to -- couldn’t even tell me what to do. (And he doesn’t want to either; I’m just painting a hypothetical.) How would this play out in real world? Let’s say we were working on a stage show together, and he was doing the choreography. Of course I’d let him do that, because he’s very good. In dancing, his creativity is relentless -- there’s no point getting in the way of it. At no point in Michael’s life did he go: “I don’t know what move should come after this one.” Would I let him choreograph me? Yes. But in this show I’d be a prop, a puppet who executes moves in order to facilitate his vision. Then I’d go home and think to myself: I am a dancer in Mike’s show, this is wonderful. But what about my vision? Do I have one? Do I have an opinion about anything in the world? What am I interested in? I think the basic issue here is self determination. It’s about resisting the ‘culture-wide gaslighting’ that I’ve mentioned in other pieces -- the idea that someone somewhere else always knows better, and that you should discount your own opinion and feelings in favour of that someone else’s. No! You have to face yourself, ask yourself the hard questions, and give yourself the hard answers. There’s a great resistance to this today, a great passivity. A “someone else will take care of it”. No, they won’t. And if you let them, you’ll get some half-assed thing, and you’ll never open your own channel, as Martha Graham so stressed the importance of. My soul must therefore be very powerful because it is so relentless. I thought about Jimi being called “not a man, but a force of nature.” He was similarly uncompromising. He had to be himself, or nothing. And he came through to me in my reading too, so clearly we have a connection. We’re on the same page on this issue. Frank Zappa is another such ‘force of nature’ soul. I remember him on a 1973 Australian TV show interview responding to the audience question “How much should an artist comprise themselves at the start of their career?” with “As little as possible.” It is a source of eternal frustration for me that people don’t understand us forces of nature. But then, why would they? Their creative force is simply not strong enough. I guess we just have to get on with our work, despite the fact that people don’t understand it. And at the end of all this work, we will at least have satisfied our own Soul to some degree, and that’s acceptable to me.

You can’t get water from an empty well, and the well of inspiration works the same way. If you want to take things out, sometimes you have to put things in. Your challenge for this weekend is to do just that. Go to a museum. Play with your kids. Pretend YOU are the kid—get out some finger paint, or sidewalk chalk, or build with LEGO. Draw with your non-dominant hand. Read your favorite picture book from when you were a kid. Go to a concert. Put on some music and dance like no one can see you. . If you want to feel the creative force of life, you have to put yourself IN that force from time to time. Feel it move through you.
