Welcome to The Journey to the West (西游记) Daily!
You are about to beging a reading journey to get the hidden Buddhist texts accompanied by the monk Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie and Bai Long Ma.
To beging this journey you must subscribe to the newsletter, which you will find at https://journeytothewestdaily.substack.com/. You wil receive your first email this week, welcoming you and sharing information about what's to come and what I will include in the emails.
However, beforehand I want to tell you already that you won't receive a daily email, despite the name of the newsletter. The chapters are dense and full of references to folklore or religion references that you might be unfamiliar with, so you will receive an email every 2 or 3 days maximum.
If this is the first time that you hear about this newsletter and you don't know what Journey to the West is...
The classical Chinese novel Journey to the West is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to the "Western Regions" (Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sūtras (sacred texts) and returned after many trials and much suffering. Gautama Buddha gives this task to the monk, whose name in the novel is Tang Sanzang, and provides him with three protectors who agree to help him as an atonement for their sins. These disciples are the Monkey King, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as the monk's steed, a white horse. The group of pilgrims journey towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation.
The novel is perfect for the epistolary format, since it's is divided in different and disconnected adventures, so you don't have to always remember what happened in the previous chapter to read the next!
We'll be reading Anthony C. Yu's translation since it is the first unabridged version that we have available in English. It is about 100 chapters long.
As I said, you will receive a first email as soon as you subscribe and an introductory email in a few days. Please, share this post so more people can read along. Use the hashtag #jttwdaily if you want to comment your impressions. I'll share the most important dates soon.
May the Buddha help you in your endeavours.

daily poll: Who wins:
A. FLOP wangji (couldn't save wei ying from death) (can't accept that hes cringe and ends up pushing wwx away) (just goes around all day playing his cringe mixtape and gets endless praise for being depressed about his dead boyfriend)
B. Shang Qinghua (put his whole qingussy into saving mbj from death and succeeded) (epic and fully accepts his cringe so he can make bank) (runs the entire administrative branch of a major sect without any accolades)

hello i am here to remind you that lan wangji did not wait for wei wuxian for 13/16 years because wei wuxian died. (now with edits!)
people don't come back from death! what happened to wei wuxian was the first time it had ever happened and probably the only time i would happen (at least in a long time) because the riutal can only be done under certain conditions, i.e. someone has to be willing to sacrifice themself, you have to call a spirit that is vicious enough etc. and most importantly, lan wangji had no idea about any of it being a possibility! [edit: only four people had used to ritual before mo xuanyu - so my point still stands i just forgot that detail - source: "only three or four examples [of using the sacrificial ritual] have been proven to be true" novel chapter 2]
lan wangji did not wait because waiting implies that he knew wei wuxian would come back, which he didn't because he died. he spent those 13/16 years mouring and taking care of lan sizhui, the only connection he still has with wei wuxian. he spent those years preparing to spend the rest of his life in mourning and wearing white mourning robes!
he played inquiry [edit: lan wangji does this in the donghua, consider that canon or fanon] to try to talk to wei wuxian but lan wangji's cultivation and skill with the qin language is so powerful that spirits he calls must answer him truthfully! so when he'd call for wei wuxian and get no answer: that was his proof that he had died. then he would ask other spirits if they knew what happened to wei wuxian, where he was, how he was etc. none of them knew anything about wei wuxian. [edit: spirits cannot lie to lwj when he uses inquiry (as seen in chapter 22: "Under his [lwj's] control, the spirit who came was unable to lie, and had definitely been answering the truth.") and lsz reveals that some people have the power to ensure spirits must answer in chapter 37: "the spirit that i summon will be able to avoid answering, but will not be able to lie. so, if it is willing to answer, then it will definitely speak the truth." this doesn't exactly mean that lwj has this skill but when speaking with jin ling, it says that lwj has mastered qin language in chapter 22: "As he mastered the language, without any hesitation, Lan WangJi confidently played a few limpid notes."]
because wei wuxian hasn't born to a sect, he didn't go through the rituals to make sure his spirit would reincarnate so when he died he turned into a spirit but because even his spirit was torn apart by ghosts and demons he was unable to do anything. [edit: i worded this weirdly - i was trying to say that the ritual prevented people from becoming ghosts and that wwx didn't have this ritual because he was the son of a servant and wasn't raised in a sect. this is mentioned in chapter 60: "disciples of famous clans, like Jiang FengMian and Yu ZiYuan, had been affected by their clan and their clan’s treasures since they were young. When they grew up, they’d receive countless soul-calming ceremonies so that there was only a miniscule chance of them becoming ferocious ghosts. But Wei WuXian was different. He was the son of a servant. He didn’t grow up in the Jiang Sect since birth, either. He didn’t have the chance to go through so many ceremonies. If after he really died with too much resentful energy and became a ferocious ghost to haunt them, it’d be quite a pain."] he spent those 13/16 years being fully unconscious and aware of what was happening but not having the power to do anything about it. he was in literal hell for 13/16 years! [edit: this you'll have to bare with me because i read it in a tweet and can no longer find it ;-; basically it stated what i said] so no spirits knew what happened to him and he couldn't answer to lan wangji's inquiry!
in conclusion, lan wangji did not wait!! [edit: it's still wrong to say that lwj waited for wwx even if i got stuff wrong lmao]

Thing that kind of frustrates me about mdzs modern AUs, as someone with chronic illness: Jiang Yanli (pretty much always) and Wen Ning (usually) are written as totally healthy. In canon, Yanli almost passes out from the exertion of... throwing a flower (mdzs), and Wen Ning needs to spend time in bed recovering after a night hunt (cql, I'm not sure about mdzs) because his soul got damaged when he was a kid. They're both sickly, with weak cultivation and much less physical stamina that other characters. But in modern AUs, Yanli is bustling around the house with a kid balanced on her hip, making food for everyone with a smile, and Wen Ning is generally quiet and socially anxious but still active and up for every wacky escapade that might be happening. I'm not saying every fic has to focus on their health issues, but it would be nice to have it mentioned once in a while. Maybe Jin Zixuan is taking care of the baby because Yanli is too exhausted to get out of bed, or maybe she has to duck out of a party early because she feels a migraine coming on. Maybe Wen Ning keeps painkillers and an inhaler in his backpack because he needs them so often, maybe he has to check his blood sugar before deciding whether he wants dessert because he's diabetic - just some little thing like that.

let it unfold [link click, mdzs fic]
Fandom: Mo Dao Zu Shi, Chen Qing Ling, Link Click, Shiguang Dailiren
Relationship: WangXian, ShiGuang
Premise: Qiao Ling has a new mission for Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang. Except, it isn't what they thought it was. Or; the wangxian and shiguang crossover I didn't know I needed.
Tags: Modern AU, First kisses
Note: This fic is written for a dear fandom moot who donated to a Gaza GoFundMe.

“Ah, the cruel landlady is here!” Cheng Xiaoshi called out lazily as he played a game on his phone, sprawled across the couch in the studio front office. “This is how you greet your boss?” Qiao Ling scowled and smacked the boy’s legs, forcing him to sit upright. “Look at you! Lazing around while Lu Guang does all the work!” She snapped as she glanced over her shoulder at the white-haired boy who was going through the account book to tally the week’s business. “The studio has closed and it’s Friday,” Cheng Xiaoshi put down his phone and looked at her pointedly. “So technically, you’re not my boss right now,” he smirked as he stood up and towered over her smugly. “You!” Qiao Ling punched him in the chest before spinning around and walking to Lu Guang, ignoring the exaggerated theatrics of Cheng Xiaoshi as he clutched his chest. “Qiao Ling-jie,” Lu Guang greeted her simply, closing the thick book and putting it back in its place under the counter. “I can’t believe you’re the younger one, Guang-Guang!” Qiao Ling rolled her eyes before smiling at Lu Guang sweetly. “Pffft!” Cheng Xiaoshi cackled and joined her at the counter, leaning forward and gazing at Lu Guang cheekily. “Guang-Guang!” He cooed and reached out for the boy’s cheek with one finger. “Idiot,” Lu Guang caught Cheng Xiaoshi’s finger before it could poke his cheek, his expression still impassive and unfazed, long used to his friend slash business partner slash roommate’s antics. “Actually,” Qiao Ling ignored Cheng Xiaoshi and went on, “Shanshan had a request…maybe a potential client,” she pulled out her phone and opened the chat with her college friend. “Dong Yi and her are trying to help their grad school friends…these two guys…” she scrolled up the chat, “I forget their name…but one of them confided in Shanshan about his crush on the other guy and thinks he-”

Ok, major pet peeve moment.
I really don't understand why people use acronyms for names of fictional Chinese characters. The names themselves aren't any longer than Christian white people names—so why? Why is it WWX and not Wei Wuxian, and why LWJ and not Lan Wangji. Why CXS and not Cheng Xiaoshi and LG and not Lu Guang. IT'S NOT HARD.
Like, I understand using acronyms for show and book names that can be as long as a whole phrase. But with names it's so unnecessary. Feels like copping out from actually learning and using them. I've never seen anyone do this with Japanese or Korean names. (And even if they did, it would still annoy me.)
