I cannot stress this enough do not walk your dogs in high temperatures

Even if it’s reasonable for you, the pavement is hotter than the air and will burn your dogs’ paws. I have seen my fair share of blistered pads this summer. I have seen a dog who was so badly injured he had to be carried everywhere for weeks.

If you must take them out, drive them to a field where there is grass to walk on. It will still be hot but will be infinitely better than walking on concrete or any other kind of heat absorbent material.

Also: take water for your dog! You can get collapsible bowls to pour water in but even just poking small holes in the top of an everyday plastic water bottle and squirting out a stream for your dog to drink from/cool off in!

Sincerely, someone who works with animals for a living and grew up in an extremely hot and open climate

Used, Abused, Discarded: Greyhound Gravesites in Ireland.

At lunchtime on the 31st of August, I was sent a link to a news article, published at half ten in the morning, about the discovery of a Greyhound Gravesite in Ireland, where the remains of multiple greyhounds were found. The most shocking part? This isn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last either. In this discovery, a number of Greyhound skeletons, skulls and remains were discovered by a member of the public walking at Roseberry Bog, Newbridge, just 2Km from Newbridge Greyhound Stadium. As of yet, we are unsure of just how many bodies were dumped at the location, but a chilling image from the scene shows multiple skeletons in the mud, with a kennel muzzle half buried beside them.

As mentioned above however, this is not the first time the public has stumbled across a dumping ground for greyhounds. In 2012, over the Easter bank holiday weekend, a man out walking in a disused quarry came across the remains of Greyhounds in varying stages of decomposition, with two bodies, a black female and a fawn male being very recently discarded due to the lack of decomposition. The greyhounds were believed to have been disposed of via a blow to the head.

Further back in 2010, the body of a Greyhound was found on Waterville Beach, with a concrete block tied around its neck. The body was discovered on the shore by a local veterinary nurse out for a walk. This event is not uncommon, and only recently, in mid-June of this year was another Greyhound drowned in this manner. In Yorkshire, UK, a greyhound was found in a canal, with a sandbag tied to her neck. Despite the fact she was microchipped, her last registered owner claimed to have rehomed her, and the person who took her claims to have no longer wanted her and given her to two others. So much for traceability eh?

This isn’t just an Irish issue however, as mass graves appear in practically every country where Commercial Greyhound Racing exists. In 2018, at a licensed greyhound trainer and breeders property in Sydney Australia, the bodies of 9 Greyhounds were discovered, along with a further 12 Greyhounds alive, but emaciated and suffering from a multitude of illnesses. According to an inspector with the NSW RSPCA, the living greyhounds had “such horrendous dental disease that you could actually smell the rotting in their mouths”.

Another 99 Greyhound bodies were discovered in a mass grave at a Hunter Valley Property in 2016. Investigations found most of the dogs had been killed by a blow to the head, either a gunshot or a blunt instrument. The vast majority of remains showed no sign of other injury, suggesting they were killed as emergency euthanisation over injury, but likely as “wastage” of the industry.

This latest greyhound grave / dumping ground is not the first, and it likely won’t be last. Across the globe, where gambling and greyhounds exist in the form of Commercial Racing, we will find Greyhounds who have been killed for failing to make the grade. The industry produces them at a much larger quantity than there are available homes for them. They have no plan for the lifetime of the animals, and rely on rescues, pounds and private charities to try and find homes for the dogs who have been discarded. And with global adoptions on the decline due to people returning to work and the ongoing cost of living crisis, more and more trainers won’t have the patience to wait for kennel space for their non-productive hounds. Every Monday on “dump day” we see calls from Vets who have young, healthy greyhounds coming in to be euthanised. We see County pounds putting out appeals to greyhound specific rescues, or rescues known for a soft spot for sighthounds to take some of the ex-racing or ex-coursing hounds who are nearing the end of their hold.

The onslaught of Greyhounds trying to come into rescue, trying to find homes, trying to experience life as beloved companions, not commodities, it never ends. And when there isn’t a place in rescue, we’ll, we can see what other alleys greyhound trainers go down to open up the kennel space…

The Dog That Fed On It's Owner

The door wept on it's henges open revealing an exhausted dog owner,

His paws clawed the wooden floor in chance she'd realize her continuous mistake.

His vicious barks occupied the vacant kitchen , clung onto his neck rattling on his every move how'd he miss the fresh morning breeze.

Blistering swollen gums for the last of her take out meals, he sacrificed his neck in reach for a chicken's bone.

Unable to feel the warmth of his owner's hands he slept on the creaking board where his legs couldn't move like the days he remembered as he whimpered in pain whist fleas dug into his veins.

Latched to a rusting chain he gain a mindset that left him in vain.

Why is he treated like fishes' scale needed for it's protection but left as a waste?.

One day, when she came home in a jolly mood she set him free with a bowl full of goodies and a collar-free neck.

Could this be another silly dream questioned the dog looking at his body shocked to a his thick fur all groomed and healthy grown once again.

But to his dismay , every time his mouth ajar into his bowl of deliciousness it seemed to vanish and appear feet's from it's original placing.

This time it stood waiting patiently on the newly furnished couch s, his tongue fell from his mouth and as he dug into his fantasy he was suddenly awaken from a blood-curdling scream.

Seated on the couch his owner sat , he'd been eating her face .

His eyes sunk into his stomach , her eyes glugging out her head and her lips tourn from her face.

He knew it was wrong but in a state of hunger he welcomed it to portray as his vicious sin.

In a state of hunger that overcomes him never would he thought it would consume him.

thinking about connor in prague saying "dad's theory was you got two fighting dogs, you send the weak one away, you punish the weak one." in relation to this episode, and the way the siblings view abuse inside their own family.

shiv and kendall and their belief that connor and roman are the weak dogs that got the brunt of logan's worst behavior, because abuse is reserved for the kids who can't behave - the ones who aren't smart and mature enough to make it in the world. abuse evokes pity, because abuse is what happens when you expect too much from people who obviously aren't capable of more.

and then they go forward in life, believing that they're just naturally more intelligent and more capable than connor and roman, as if being raised seeing what happens to you if you aren't a perfect child wasn't the entire point of the "punish the weak dog" mentality that logan instilled in them. the looming threat implied behind any praise they do receive that tacitly tells them "you're not like roman and connor" because everyone knows what happens to roman and connor.

the absolute height of the rich capitalist mindset. "we're succeeding because of our own merit, and other people fail because they don't have what it takes" when in reality they're succeeding because of arbitrary rules made up by someone who knows that infighting makes meaner dogs.

My post about not hitting children got some responses from people who said “I agree and also some young children who get hit by their parents have no respect for adults who doesn’t hit them and become unruly”

As it turns out, the same goes for animals.

I adopted this girl, Ellie, a year ago. Her previous owners were devastated that they had to give her up but their situation was less than ideal and they lived in their landlord’s house and he was apparently very rough with Ellie and blamed her for everything his own dogs did.

When Ellie first moved in she responded strongly to us talking sternly to her. Even saying her name in a deep voice made her tug her tail between her legs and hide. But eventually she realized we were never going to hurt her no matter how sternly we talked and now, a year later, we have a very sweet but cheeky dog who loves us very much but has zero respect. She will jump on tables and when we shout “Ellie! No!” she just looks at us like “What?”

Positive reinforcement works pretty well but her early experiences with “discipline” means she clearly doesn’t understand when we are displeased with her. So thanks previous assholes in her life for making this unnecessarily difficult. You’re lucky she’s such a sweet dog who doesn’t let life get her down.
