McQ talking on Light the Fuse podcast about how Tom is able to place himself in the mind of the audience has reminded me of a point I wanted to make.
I’ve seen a number of people online comparing Tom Cruise to Christopher Nolan, because they both favor the practical over CGI and how they push the spectacle of the cinematic experience and while that is true, they have a very different focus in mind.
Christopher Nolan's first priority is the aesthetic of the film. Tom Cruise's first priority is the audience, which is why in Top Gun Maverick you can understand what the pilots are saying in the F-18 when they're wearing masks.
Now, some people will read that and go “well yeah. Of course we can understand them because they have radios,” and that’s my point. In Tenet, in both the opening and final sequences the characters would have had a radio in their helmets to allow them to communicate with their teams, but the inability to understand dialogue extended to the whole film, not just ones where characters wore masks.
“I don’t agree with the idea that you can only achieve clarity through dialogue,” Nolan continued. “Clarity of story, clarity of emotions — I try to achieve that in a very layered way using all the different things at my disposal — picture and sound. I’ve always loved films that approach sound in an impressionistic way and that is an unusual approach for a mainstream blockbuster, but I feel it’s the right approach for this experiential film.” [source x]
I understand what Nolan is saying here, but when you have a film which involved a rather complicated concept, where you had to understand the mechanics of who was traveling backwards or forwards in time and the stakes involved, it was very frustrating not to understand the dialogue. That approach felt like it was keeping me at arms length from the movie, rather than making me want to lean into it.
What Tom and McQ do by contrast, who have also spoken about communication with an audience via action and movement, is to ensure the movie invites the audience in and asks them to pay attention rather than challenging them to keep up.*
*And there's nothing wrong with challenging an audience, but you have to give me all the tools to be able to keep up

Hair
Tumblr media
Our Story Masterlist Summary: YN's reaction to Harry's new hairstyle.
Based on this request
Harry was always known for his curls or his long hair, especially during the band. His hair was just as famous as him. He had gone through a variation of styles.
The overgrown curls, the one that YN remembers trying to mess up when they first started dating. The one that outlined his baby face, despite having to grow up over night.
Next was the slightly trimmed hair style. Harry still had a good amount of hair but it meant his curls were shorter. It made him look more grown up.
The slicked back quiff was Harry’s go to hairstyle during the Take Me Home tour. YN used to spray half a can of hairspray on it each night before a show, to make sure the volume didn’t drop. But she didn’t mind because Harry’s hair matched his personality, sophisticated and playful.
Outgrown and pushed back, YN noticed that Harry no longer wanted his hair trimmed, only styled. Did she complain? No! She liked this new hairstyle, it screamed rockstar vibes and YN was living for it.
Due to not having his haircut for so long, Harry’s hair grew and grew. It was shoulder length for majority of the On The Road Again tour. Harry’s habit was running his fingers through it and flipping it to the side. YN and the fans went feral for this hairstyle, especially when he styled it into a bun. Dreamy!
When Harry got the role of Alex in Dunkirk, after One Direction went on a break, his luscious long locks didn’t suit the 1940’s vibe. So off with a chop they came. YN was seen hiding her face in Anne’s shoulder, repeating “I can’t look” as the hairstylist brushed Harry’s hair into a bobble and cut away his hair.
The shorter curls stayed for a while, and YN could see as they got older the shorter cut with a few curls sticking out suited him. It made Harry look older but some innocence still remained. But to YN’s liking, she still got to run her hand through his hair at any opportunity.
So like the rest of the world when Harry decided one day to shave his precious curls off, YN was absolutely heartbroken, and to some very dramatic.
YN knew Harry was going for a haircut that afternoon, but when he arrived back home later on with lack of hair, rather than his typical trim…you could say she was lost for words.
Harry entered their kitchen, and acted like nothing was out of the ordinary. “I’ll make veggie lasagna for dinner, if you fancy it?”.
YN was still stood by the kitchen sink as she had just finished washing some dishes. She just stared at Harry, wondering if he realised that his scalp was visible.
“Babe? Why are you looking at me like that?”. Harry noticed YN hadn’t moved a smidge since he arrived home. Of course he knew why, but there was no harm acting oblivious.
YN looked him directly in the eye. “Please tell me this is a joke?”. She wanted this to be a prank, where Harry said it was all a lie and his curls were actually hidden under a bald cap or something.
Still keeping up the act, Harry pretended to be confused. “What’s a joke?”.
“Where’s your fookin’ hair?”. YN questioned, already scared for the answer. Afraid it was going to be one she didn’t like.
Harry hesitated, before reaching up to touch his head. “AH! Where’s it gone?!”. He couldn’t keep the act up, and a loud chuckle left his mouth.
YN’s hand came up to cover her mouth for a second, as she realised that Harry intentionally asked for this haircut. “Why? Why have you done this?”.
Harry shrugged his shoulders, as though it wasn’t a big change. “Just fancied a change.”.
“A change…a change!”. YN couldn’t believe how calm he was being right now. “Dye your hair fookin’ pink, blue or like fookin’ rainbow if you want a change…don’t shave the whole lot fookin’ off!”. YN’s rant began.
“Is it bad?”. Harry grew nervous for a moment, worried he may have made a huge mistake.
“Well no…that’s what’s annoying..you can still look good even when you shave your fookin’ head!”. YN complimented the fact that there wasn’t a look Harry couldn’t pull off. “But I need to be dramatic right now…oh my..the fans…they’re going to be devastated.”.
“It’ll grow back, no big deal.”. Harry stated like that would solve everything.
“You better have your curls back in time for our wedding.”. YN warned him, to which he only smirked and saluted her playfully.
It was a short while later, when Harry realised that YN had been tucked away in their bedroom for a while. Gently peaking through the gap in the doorway, he wasn’t expecting to see YN sat on the floor, surrounded by multiple photos of himself.
Harry tucked his lips into his mouth, trying to hold his chuckle back. Deciding that this was a moment he wanted to catch, knowing nobody would believe him if he told them, Harry began to discreetly record on his phone.
“Babe? What are you doing?”. Harry asked, entering their bedroom, realising that the photos of himself were of all his variations of hairstyles over the years. But he was shocked when he saw a tear run down her cheek. “Are…are you crying?”.
YN was still sat on the floor, yet to say a word. She closed her eyes and wiped away the tear.
“Can I ask what you’re doing?…it’s like you’ve made a shrine of me.” Harry attempted another joke, still finding the whole thing amusing.
With her eyes still closed, posture still composed, YN explained. “I’m mourning the loss of your precious curls, if you could be respectful of all our loss.”.
Harry masked his giggle with a cough, not wanting to be “disrespectful”. “Babe? This is all a bit much…don’t you think?”.
“I told you I need to be dramatic right now…so please, leave me to grieve.”. YN knew she was being dramatic, she knew it wasn’t the end of the world, she knew it was only hair and it would grow back. But she was weak for his luscious locks.
Adding more fuel to the fire, when fans were quick to notice the lack of hair on Harry’s head after a photo was leaked. YN joined them on airing her feelings. She had made a TikTok of a compilation of photos of Harry over the years with hair covering his head, with Taylor Swift’s song Bigger Than The Whole Sky playing in the background.
YN made another TikTok, where she pretended to cry every time Harry walked passed her and repeating “The precious curls!”.
Fans were highly amused at YN’s video of her recording herself searching for “how to grow your hair quickly?” on Google and also researching rosemary hair oil as she had seen the trend on TikTok for hair growth.
But in all honestly, YN didn’t dislike the change but did she want Harry’s hair back? YES!

TC tag game
Thanks for the tags, @spudodell and @renaultphile, sorry it's taken me so long to actually get to this!
Rules: Answer the questions and tag other TC fans!
1. "He would not fucking say that" only they did and it's canon. When/who?
Laurie to Andrew, at their first meeting:
"... I read somewhere once, Tchaikovsky was queer."
It just feels a bit... 0-100 at that point for someone as repressed as Laurie is.
2. Did they kiss in the study? Yes/no + why you are 100% correct about this.
I think they did, and it was very much a peck rather than anything more. And I think Ralph's main motivation for it was to try and shock Laurie into backing off to save him being (as he sees it) corrupted by their continued association.
It makes sense of both their reactions, for me - I can see Ralph semi-angrily planting one on him more or less out of nowhere and then, when Laurie is (understandably) startled, going, "Now you see what I mean..." and then just steamrolling over Laurie's attempt to talk about it.
3. Mandatory question about Ralph's alleged tattoos.
I can see him having got one or two early in his career when he wanted to fit in. But somewhere easily covered (and possibly where he can't easily see them himself?), as I think they'd offend his desire for order and tidiness otherwise.
4. 53 vs 59 edition: quote a line or paragraph that is better in the edition you like the least.
I've only got the '53 edition to hand at the moment, but I think the hand on the knee in the car was cut for the '59... I like that little moment, it's just very clear what's going on there in comparison to a lot of their other interactions around that time.
I do also love the "Don't insult my intelligence" exchange that @spudodell picked out, I love Laurie - who's inclined to take himself a bit seriously - already being comfortable enough with Ralph to tease him like he does <3
5. Which TC character would feel right at home here on tumblr dot com?
Ralph. He'd be reblogging posts about polar exploration left, right and centre. And he'd be incredibly into The Terror but would never admit it.
6. Tag yourself at Alec's birthday party.
I'm definitely the "is it a queer book?" guy.
7. Post a TC meme.
Not actually a meme, but it always makes me think of TC...
Tumblr media
8. Easy to talk about who deserved better. Who deserved worse?
Possibly controversial - Alec. He doesn't seem to care about Sandy's feelings or respect him all that much, and strikes me as someone who likes being in a relationship so they've got company when they want it, but isn't all that interested in actually making a commitment himself.
9. You can break the fourth wall (at any point in the novel) and say a single sentence to our protagonist, Laurie Odell. What do you say?
I'd tell him not to dismiss Reg as abruptly as he does. That friendship could definitely have continued, because Reg clearly knew Laurie was queer and was determined to (albeit clumsily) make the point that he didn't view him differently because of it.
10. What's a question you have about TC? One you haven't found an answer for yet.
What was in Ralph's letter to Laurie, the one that was returned after Dunkirk?
I'm pretty sure everyone has already been tagged but if anyone hasn't, and wants to join in, then please do!

To be honest, buzz cuts are like one of those guy styles that you kind of just get used to and it’s fine. Do I think it’s going to be his best look? No. Will it be fine? Probably. It’s so just like, “meh guy cut”. Interested to see if he cut it for a purpose or if he was just tired of being defined by his hair. Shit grows back. It’s fine.
Yeah, this was my exact reaction. It’s definitely a surprise but so was his cut for Dunkirk. Of course my curiosity is absolutely piqued too. Your point of him being defined by his hair? I did wonder about that as a possibility. After reading Britney Spears’ memoir, her reflection and explanation on why she shaved her head was really beautiful and heartbreaking as it spoke to exactly that.
Or Harry could’ve lost a bet. It could be as simple as that, haha. I’d love for him to speak on it, I hope it was an empowering change for him whether if it was for work or not.

I feel like harry is so well known and so marketed as xyz that it’s almost impossible for people to see him mold himself into serious roles.
The HarryStyles™️ brand shows him as a womanizer rockstar wattpad guy. If he was in rom coms I think he would be getting rave reviews.
I think his team really messed his chances on seeming like a respectable actor. I remember he got good feedback for his acting in Dunkirk, even tho he was still hugely famous he wasn’t as overexposed going into his solo career so you could kind of forget it was Harry in that film and let your brain allow him to be the character.
I feel like the fan reactions to him in DWD show that… isn’t he like a manipulative ass who traps his ex wife?! No one cared, they see HarryStyles looking dapper and going down on someone and he’s the best husband and goals. None of those fans are absorbing his actual role they’re just absorbing him in a fantasy (which is obvy what O wanted for marketing and money). They can’t do that as much in My Policeman because he plays a gay character and they can’t fit him into this fantasy and the others are sick of his “queer baiting”.
He’s too famous that no one in the world will be able to give an unbiased opinion on his work.
I think DWD and the PR relationship and pushing this whole Watermelon Sugar eating pussy farce while also sprinkling Medicine and queer vibes but also allowing H to remain seemingly noncommittal on his sexuality really has come around and bit them in the ass. They created this mess and never once stepped in and tried to manage it because they were so busy playing both sides.
I really, really hope there are more reviews that see this film for what it is. And i really hope people give Harry the benefit of the doubt and see how much this film meant to him. It’s painful to see all of that being dismissed.

We'll meet again || Loki x Mortal! Fem! Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Loki x Mortal! Fem! Reader
Word count: 1.8k
Summary: They meet again in low lights and no tomorrows.
Warnings: mentions of war, mentions of blood, mentions of injuries, angst
Previous part || Series masterlist
War was not pretty. That was something she knew with a deep certainty. ''It was a torment'' she thought as she rinsed the blood off her hands. The red went down the sink's drain, leaving small droplets behind.
The soldiers' cries travelled throughout the hospital to her ears. She let a sigh escape her lips as she studied herself in the mirror. If her father would see her right now, he would say she should put some weight on. She even could picture his voice, raising in octaves with worry. "Oh my, Y/N, you look awful! Have you eaten?"
If she were a liar she would say yes, that she had eaten. Every day, every meal. Never skipping breakfast (it's the most important meal of the day!), but she was no liar. Undoubtedly so. She preferred the brutal truth. And the image starring right back at her was the truth. A rather raw one, but Y/N took things as they were. No sugar coating.
And war was certainly not pretty.
"Nurse Y/N?"
She turned around to the source of the sound and a kind face greeted her, red strands framing it. She wore the same red cross as Y/N did, a tag, a signature. Her frail figure betrayed her mature face. She looked eighteen, at most.
It broke her heart.
"Yes?" she said, forcing a smile.
"Head nurse is calling you into her office."
Walking through the hospital with her head held high was a skill she had mastered. Ignoring the soldiers whistles and cries gave her more stability than acknowledging them ever will. Ignorance is bliss.
If only she could erase some of her hurt too...
She knocked on the slightly ajar door, listening in for a response that came after a few seconds. "Come in!"
The head nurse was a woman in her late fifties who never actually talked about her past. But Y/N didn't actually try to pry either, she understood that there were walls you just can't break down, nor windows to open. She figured that respecting her was enough, even without the friendship she desperately missed these days.
"Oh, nurse Y/N! How have you been doing?" Her smile was warm, but reserved.
"I suppose the same as everyone here." she replied without much further ado.
The other nurse deeply sighed, casting her eyes downwards. "Yes, I understand. These are dark times. Hard ones."
She didn't reply this time, letting the silence speak for itself. The head nurse was pouting her lips, fumbling with her wedding ring. "How's your father?" she eventually asked.
"He's fine. A bit lonely, I reckon. I haven't turned up at home much."
She really didn't. Her nights were spent near hospital beds, tending to wounds and saving lives.
"He must miss you."
"I miss him, too."
The head nurse deeply inhaled, a strand of white hair falling out of the updo and into her eyes. "I think you should go pay a visit at home, nurse. As a goodbye, for now. More of us are needed near Dunkirk." She waited for a reaction and when Y/N's face remained impassible, she added in wavering voice. "I'm really sorry, sweetheart."
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
Loki often wondered in times like these why he chose to do what he did. He couldn't say it was because of boredom (Odin knew how much time he spent reading in the Asgardian library, there wasn't enough time as books), but he couldn't say he cared for it either. It just happened to be a solution at the right moment and time. And he may not ever admit it, but mortals could never carry their battles by themselves.
So maybe that was why he found himself looking into a mirror and seeing a captain, in green garments that only kept him warm because they were made of wool.
Wool.
It was what she wore the first time they met. A single red scarf.
She was the reason why he thought of coming back to a Midgard in full blown war. Things piled up and then he was captain, overlooking soldiers and seeing death.
But he still didn't see her.
Tonight was the last night he spent in London before he was departed to Dunkirk, already failing in finding her again. It would had been the fourth time he would had met her. Saying hello's and goodbye's like it was a first time took a toll on him, because everytime he did meet her, she didn't remember him. Memories of them, of kisses shared and love made were erased. And he was back to square zero.
But Y/N always did love him back in the end. Maybe, they were meant to meet again.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
She was slowly packing her things up to go at home. Finally. Just to leave it again the next morning. Life had a funny way of playing around and putting on a show.
Y/N felt a pair of eyes on her and she turned around coming face to face with the young, redheaded nurse, who blushed out of embarrassment. "I'm Sophie." she said.
"Hi, Sophie." smiled Y/N.
"Are you leaving?"
"To Dunkirk."
"Oh. Me too." Her voice was slightly strained. "Some of the nurses who are leaving tomorrow, go to a party tonight. Just a small gathering. There'll be soldiers too."
"One last dance before the inevitable?" replied Y/N, smiling sarcastically.
The young nurse nodded, oblivious to what she just said. "Yes. Are you coming too?"
Y/N wanted to say no, she wasn't coming. She used to love parties, and dancing was always one of her favourite things to do when she was feeling down (for some reason, she always felt she was missing the right partner though), but lately these started to wear down, no joy in them. But then, she took a good look at Sophie. Sophie who was far too young to tend to wounded soldiers. Sophie who probably just finished highschool and wouldn't go to university because these hard times just aren't letting her. Sophie who approached her shyly to invite her to a party because she probably was feeling alone. Sophie who was fidgeting on the spot, her red hair hiding her eyes.
"I'd love to." Y/N replied.

The dinner had been mostly quiet, just the scraping of knives and forks against plates filled the air. Her father kept briefly watching her, looking at her frail figure. ''You should put some weight on, Y/N.'' he had said. And she discarded his words, getting up and cleaning the dishes.
''I really missed you, little one. You're never home these days.'' Garwin said, his white hair falling into his eyes.
Y/N sighed. ''I know, father. It's not by choice-''
'I know.'' he interrupted her. ''Just know you're still my little girl and I love you very much, even if you're not my blood.''
Her eyes softened and she hugged him. ''I love you, too.''
Her words lingered in the air.

The fairy lights strewn across the room were flashing ember and there was some band playing in the corner. The trumpet rose up and down in notes and trills. Loki straightened his jacket and entered the room, shielding his eyes with his cap. His lanky legs carried him to the bar, his hands touching the smooth surface of the wood. It smelled like cheap cigarettes and alcohol. It was hard to find anything of quality these times. Money were rare, and so were luxurious goods.
"What can I do for you, sir?" the barman asked. His white, ivory shirt had the cuffs of the sleeves rolled up.
''Just some whiskey on the rocks.'' It wasn't the nectar he usually drank in Asgard, but mortals also had fine things, like the velvety clothes, or wool, or jazz. Or Y/N.
The barman handed Loki his drink and he picked it up. The cold surface made him forget for a moment about tomorrow .The alcohol touched his lips, burning his throat. He turned his back to the bar, leaning on it. The sight of a red dress adorning a familiar body made him choke on the drink. Her hair was pinned up, a red lipstick staining her lips. He wished to taste them, but kept his distance.
Loki put the glass away, straightening his jacket once more. The wool pinched his skin, but he didn't pay it any thought. His mind (and eyes) was on her. Y/N. She was speaking with a petite red-haired girl, her necklace shining under the lights. She was basked in golden light, in the afterglow. She looked like a movie star, Loki thought. One that deserved any minute of screen time.
Inhaling deeply, Loki made the first few steps towards before abruptly stopping. Her head turned around and her eyes wandered through the room before stopping on him. There were dark rings around her eyes, dark circles that told of sleepless nights and tiring days, but her eyes still sparkled like the stars in the inky sky. Her eyebrow lifted questionably and Loki found the courage to approach her.
The band started playing, once again, a sweet, feminine voice softly singing.
We'll meet again
Don't know where, don't know when
Loki took off his cap, slightly bowing before her. ''Miss.'' he said in a greeting.
Her gaze pierced through him, a glint in her eyes. ''Have we met before?''
His lips curled in a lopsided smile. ''Maybe in another life.''
Loki had lived this scene a million times before and not once did it fail to give him a thrilling feeling and rush. His chest fluttered at the sight of her and his cheeks blushed at the thought of her hand in his and her lips against his own. Déjà vu.
''May I have this dance, miss?'' he asked, reaching his hand out.
''You certainly may.'' she replied, smiling.
Her touch sent lightening throughout his whole body. He led her on the dance floor, like he did in the past too. His hand lingered on her back and she brought herself closer to him. Her hair smelled like roses. Loki let the scent envelop him, drinking it in.
Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
Y/N started humming, slow dancing in his arms. Loki fluttered his eyes shut, the song and her perfume washing over him. ''I feel like I know you from somewhere.'' she whispered.
His heart beat against his chest like drums, but he didn't reply, settling on squeezing her hand in his.
''What's your name, sir?''
''Loki.''
She tasted his name on her lips. ''Sounds familiar. I'm Y/N.''
I know. He almost replied that. Almost.
He twirled her around and she laughed, her skirt swishing around like the ocean waves. And suddenly she grew quiet. ''I'm afraid we won't see much of each other soon.'' she said.
Dunkirk. Loki thought about his departure and then looked down at the woman in his arms and his heart grew heavy. ''We have tonight.'' he replied, drawing her closer.
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day.

A/N: sorry for taking so long to write this chapter! This story is very intricate as it demands lots of history research. The song in the title and in the chapter was often played to the soldiers as a way of encouraging and reassuring them that they'll return home. It was a way of saying ''goodbye for now.''
Thank you so much for reading and please let me know your thoughts on it :)

'The first reactions to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer have dropped following a world premiere in Paris. Following the nearly three-hour screening, critics are praising Cillian Murphy’s performance and calling the film “awe-inspiring,” “staggering” and a “spectacular achievement.”
Total Film editor Matt Maytum said the film left him “stunned” and called Cillian Murphy’s performance “sublime.” “An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow,” he added.
Jonathan Dean of The Sunday Times says he was “totally absorbed” by the film calling it “a dense, talkie, tense film partly about the bomb, mostly about how doomed we are.”
“Murphy is good, but the support essential: Damon, Downey Jr & Ehrenreich even bring gags. An audacious, inventive, complex film to rattle its audience,” Dean added.
One negative point Dean mentioned was that the women in the cast “are badly served” noting “Emily Blunt only once gets out of her stressed mother role.” However, Dean has already ranked Oppenheimer in his top three Nolan films alongside Memento and The Prestige.
Bilge Ebiri of Vulture tweeted, “OPPENHEIMER is…incredible. The word that keeps coming to mind is ‘fearsome.’ A relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in the most astonishing, shattering way.”
Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr called Oppenheimer a “spectacular achievement” saying the story of the film “is a serious, philosophical, adult drama that’s as tense and exciting as Dunkirk. And the big moment – THAT MOMENT – is awe-inspiring.”
Collider’s editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub said the film “is incredible” adding, “Every aspect of the film is worth talking about from the brilliant performances, to #HoytevanHoytema’s amazing work behind the camera, to the way Nolan tells the story. The 3-hour run time flies by. See it in @IMAX 70mm if you can.”
Jeremy Mathai from Slash Film said Oppenheimer was “staggering in every sense of the word.”
“Might sound nuts to say this about a Chris Nolan movie that isn’t INCEPTION, DUNKIRK, or even TENET, but this could be his most formally daring work yet,” he added. “Sharp script, impeccable sound design, and Cillian Murphy is a *force*.”
Oppenheimer hits theaters on July 21 and it also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh, among others...'

I just read Yellowface in the span of like 3 hours and will need 3-5 business days to recover, but I think what I was most unexpectedly struck by after reading it is how passionate Kuang is about her subject matter. This shouldn't have surprised me considering her passion for anti-colonialism and research and language illuminates Babel to such a degree, but after hearing Yellowface described everywhere as a satire, a thriller, I came into this supposing a much more blasé tone. It is a thriller--at least its pacing is more like a thriller than any other genre--but I don't think it's fare to call it a satire. The points make themselves, without relying on metaphor. Kuang deconstructs the very worst of the literary industry, but its all drawn from real life. Some of those anecdotes are real (I recognized the one about the YA author who encouraged her fans to leave one-star reviews of another debut author's book. I don't know if I even know who the irl person was, but I remember the story). Of course, the casual racism is baked into it everywhere--most painful was the scene where June meets the guys from the Hollywood production company who immediately try to remake her novel as Dunkirk (complete with Tom Holland). Yes, it's funny, and its the kind of funny that makes you cringe with secondhand embarrassment of just how obvious pop culture is. But its also self-perpetuating and eternal because we who feel ourselves more sophisticated and nuanced and subtle in our media consumption can roll our eyes at it even while we partake of it.
In some ways, this novel is a Faust story. It's a story of two girls of different backgrounds who have to sell their integrity in order to get a modicum of recognition or payout because of the way the system works. It isn't enough to love writing and creating, as June seems to in her early years, or even after she publishes her disappointing debut. But what also seems dreadful is how once the cycle has started, it's impossible to get out of it. Once you're published, in the public eye, that's it. You're in the hands of a merciless crowd. And once you're torn apart, you can no longer publish, and the deal with the devil has failed, and the joy of writing itself has been torn away. Which is the true tragedy of this novel, for me. At the end, June tries to find ways to take back control of her story, but it reads (to me anyway) more like empty rantings than anything else she has told us as an unreliable narrator. She can't escape this circle of hell she's put herself in.
I wonder if this is intentional on Kuang's part or if she did intend to make the end hopeful--that anyone can spin the narrative back around to their favor. If the latter, it is still very much in keeping with the message of the whole book: that no truth is stable and everything is constructed by the biases of the audience. But the former is also in keeping with the book, as well: June has deluded herself and everyone else through. Why should this final stroke be any different?
As someone hoping to break into the publishing industry, this was a very cautionary tale. Also makes me want to wipe everything I've ever said off the Internet. But it'll definitely stick with me for a while. And it is rather amusing to see people's reactions on the Internet because they operate e x a c t l y as Kuang depicts them re: Athena and June. As I said. Self-perpetuating.

World on Fire - Season 2, Episode 2
It’s the second episode, and I’m already behind. Prepare yourselves for a long one, readers!
The Egyptian Storyline
Cue title card: Sahara Desert, Egypt
(that narrows it down)
Tumblr media
Harry arrives at the front and reunites with Stan and Joe from his old crew. He meets Rajib and Singh, who were introduced in the last episode, and new recruit George. Very quickly, it becomes apparent that Harry is again out of his element. Italian planes fly low overhead, and Harry immediately ducks (the standard reaction during the retreat) while Stan keeps walking.
Stan introduces Rajib with begrudging respect (“a bit full of himself, but then, I’d be full of myself if I single handedly blew a hole in a mountain so the Scottsguard could get through and chase the enemy.”) Aww, Stan’s becoming slightly less of a jerk this season…
Harry gets along with Rajib, which is nice. Rajib has the decisiveness Harry lacked for much of last season, so maybe that’ll set an example…
Their ensuing conversation reveals that Rajib had fought in Ethiopia. (I’ve tried to pin down which battle this would have been, but I’m not entirely sure yet.) What I am sure of is that they are trying to get to Bardia in Libya as part of Operation Compass, the British push into Libya that winter. Bardia would have its own battle in January, so that’s something to look out for next episode.
Rajib says something along the lines of: “It’s amazing what you can get the lower classes to do for three square meals and money home.” That’s an understatement. I get the sense that Rajib is holding back his actual opinions to avoid potential repercussions.
Rajib’s time in Northern and Eastern Africa would have run almost parallel to Harry’s evacuation from Dunkirk and journey home. He would have grown up under control of the British Empire in Asia, and is now fighting for that empire to stop the control of Italy’s expanding colonial powers in Africa. With those similarities in mind…is there much of a difference between one side or the other?
(The show obviously can’t go into a comparison of centuries of colonialism, empire-building, invasions, etc. in depth, but the past two episodes have done a good job of planting this question in the viewer’s mind, at least for me.)
In a later battle with Italian forces as they approach the Egyptian-Liberian border the two units discover a cave where some of the soldiers kept their supplies cool and clean from the sand and the heat. In the confusion of gunfire, Harry opens an old leg wound. Nothing that requires immediate surgery or amputation, but enough to be at risk of infection from sand. And judging from the way Harry seems to want to avoid the topic.
(Dude, Stan had this problem during Dunkirk. Don’t jeopardize your unit because you’re afraid to admit you have an injury that needs supervision!)
Also, I may be reading too much into this, but is the battle supposed to be Nibeiwa? December 9th, 1940? Or Sidi Barrani the next day? The episode ends on Christmas Day, and each episode covers roughly a month of time. Or is this not a battle but one of the many little skirmishes along the way? Or simply a made-up location to get away with some potential inaccuracies?
That night, Joe talks to the new guy George about life in the army and back home. Joe knows the ropes, so as long as George sticks with him, he should be fine. Cue Joe going off on his own for a late night bathroom break in the middle of a sandstorm. The next morning, Harry makes a grisly discovery. The sand buried Joe alive.
Tumblr media
It’s the wrong location, but the way Harry pulls up the rope makes me expect to hear “What have I done?” a la Alec Gusiness in Bridge on the River Kwai.
Also, kudos to the director Barney Cokeliss and cinemetographer Bastian Schiøtt. The journey through the desert looks horrifying.
What do you do when you’re fighting one war against enemy forces…and another war against nature (and nature is winning)?
Context
October 1935 - May 1936 - Italy invades and Ethiopia, one of the few remaining independent states, to expand their colonial power in Africa November 1936 - German and Italian alliance (the “Rome-Berlin Axis”) is announced June 10th, 1940 - Italy declares war on Britain and France and later invades southern France September 13th, 1940 - Italian forces start to invade Egypt (which occupied by the British for at least another decade) from Libya (then an Italian colony) December 1940 - January 1941 - Allied troops push Italian forces back into Libya
The British Storyline
The implications of the British plots are pretty dense this episode, and I have a lot of thoughts, so I’m going to break it up for clarity’s sake.
David
Tumblr media
In the face of losing friend after friend, acquaintance after acquaintance, coworker after coworker, David can only respond with a joke. When his superior officer confronts him about his reactions, David pointedly responds, “If you can’t laugh about half the world hating you, what can you laugh about?”
Later, he meets up with Grzegorz at the club. (Boys’ night!)
Then it turns out precious Grzegorz has sneakily tried to set up David with Lois.
Tumblr media
(He's so proud of himself, too!)
To be fair, I thought the two would make a nice couple the moment he was introduced. He reminds me of season 1 Lois, giving glib and clever responses to any pushback, maintaining an armor of humor to hide other emotions.
Lois is not up for a blind date, though, and tries to scare him off with a list of her losses, including Harry as “the love of my life.” So, no, she’s not doing well. He tries to salvage the situation and is promptly shot down in perhaps my favorite exchange of the episode:
“I’m bad luck.” “Maybe I’m the good luck you’ve been waiting for.” “Nah.” (shotguns a glass to David’s intimidation and arousal, but mostly intimidation)
Tumblr media
But it’s not a total loss. He meets Connie. They have a cute moment wearing night goggles at her flat…as Lois snores from the other side of the room. David asks if Lois has always been like this. Connie (taking the fact that the man sleeping next to her is more interested in talking about her roommate than her extremely well) acknowledges that Lois’s behavior has gotten more risky lately. David shares that he was raised by his grandparents instead of his birth parents, so maybe there’s hope for Vera after all if Lois does go off on her own.
Once again, David loses another pilot.
At the end of the episode, he watches Stephen (the pilot who had been making some antisemitic comments earlier) burn to death as his plane catches fire before he can bail out. The dog fight scenes can get a little repetitive, especially since green screen and post-production effects can only add so much variety, but kudos to Gregg Sulkin for selling the fear, adrenaline, and grief with just his eyes and eyebrows visible.
I’ll come back to the context of this dog fight later.
Lois
Covered in bricks last episode? Eh, we’ll give her a bandage and a scrape on the forehead. She’s fine. She’s traumatized and wants to get out of Manchester and away from anyone left who knows her, but she’s totally fiiiiiinnnne.
So Kasia takes one look at her and gets it. Lois takes great pains to say that she isn’t grieving her father, that she’d rather not have Vera than have her, that she doesn’t feel anything at all. Kasia points out that this isn’t true, or Lois wouldn’t try to say it often enough to make herself believe it.
Tumblr media
(Harry, who? These two women need more conversations together!)
The two have a mature conversation about the alienating nature of grief. Kasia reframes the situation for Lois and neither supports nor rejects the idea of getting away (even from Vera). She sees in this the choice she made in the very first episode with Jan.
But someone else is most certainly not on board with this decision, and it’s Tom (back for another single-scene appearance!). Tom and Lois bury Douglas’s remaining belongings at their mother’s grave. He jokes that it’s second billing, as Douglas would have always wanted. Then, because no one in this family can handle honest sentiment for long, quips:
“There Dad. Happy now? ‘Pacifist proves his point by getting killed by Hitler.’”
Tumblr media
Lois admits to Tom that she had wanted the bomb to kill her. By the end of the episode, she’s sought several ways to get permission to get out. At the bottom of a glass. Pushing away friends and acquaintances. A poster for the ATS that just so happens to be for a posting in Cairo.
Oh yeah, she’s totally fine. Totally over Harry. Totally going in a new direction in life. (Just when you think she’s out, the idea of Harry pulls her back in. Baby girl, no one will measure up to the person you thought Harry was because you won’t let them close enough to know them. He’s the love of your life? No, he’s the only love you’ll let hang onto your life, when it never did you any good. Move on with your life–not to the same country as him.)
But I digress.
Sir James
Tumblr media
I don’t know what to think of Sir James, and frankly I think that’s the point. Right off the bat, we’re introduced to his charm, humor, and wealth. He has the influence to get a bouquet of fresh white flowers for Robina. He is Sir James, already Robina’s social superior. He knows more about Robina than Robina does about him. He’s constantly throwing Robina off her guard for the rest of the episode, and while it’s fun to see her navigate situations where she’s on her back foot, this says something about his character in that every conversation is a surprise.
Is he being serious? Is he joking? Is he flirting? (Is he trying to get her to give him information?) It’s not clear what exactly he wants with Robina and the Tomaszeski siblings, but he certainly has something up his sleeve. In a single episode, he has:
Arrived several days early and without notice
Already known that Robina has a Polish refugee child living with her
Used his influence to resolve Kasia’s civil suit
Gotten Jan and Robina to trust him
Stolen a Christmas tree* from a churchyard
Just kidding, it was from the office
Sent out secret radio messages in the night
*A yuletide tradition originally from Germany
But what really grinds my gears about him is how he is all for Lois giving Vera over to Robina…who he suggests should give the baby to Kasia. Kasia’s a woman, so surely she’ll be fine looking after the child her husband fathered after cheating on her while she was mourning the murders of her mother and father, the thought of never seeing her brothers again, and her homeland being invaded. But women are interchangeable to babies, right?
(I know all babies are plot devices in shows, but it's like every single character is playing hot potato with the baby. At this rate, it’ll be Jan taking care of Vera before the end of the season!)
Though that could be a ruse to throw Kasia off his tail. Sir James has a line about guile that Kasia repeats at the end of the episode, impressing him (or arousing his suspicions!). Between Jan’s memory and Kasia’s finesse, they’d make a fine team. If Sir James is working for the Allies, that is…
Oooooooh, are we going to bring the storylines together with the Long Range Desert Group intel for the North African campaign?
Their motto (at least according to Wikipedia, so take this with a big grain of salt): Non Vi Sed Arte (Not by Strength, but by Guile)
Okay, so Sir James says something along the lines of “not by deceit, but by guile” instead. Which means this storyline may converge with one of the others. After all, he has a radio transmitter and receiver in his suitcase…and a German passport. Either he’s some Lord Haw Haw insert who is at Robina’s due to her past sympathies, or he is Allied and in touch with a resistance cell on the continent…and working with him will be Kasia’s next storyline. Maybe it will involve getting someone out of Occupied Paris…or someone into Berlin.
The German Storyline
I’m just now realizing that Marga’s story arc is shaping up to contrast with Lois’s relationship to motherhood.
While Lois decided to go through with the pregnancy in season one, even with the prospect of ever having any romantic relationship with Harry dimming, she now regrets becoming a mother, or at least no longer feels as if she can be an effective mother, and wants to give up her baby to Robina’s care, at least for awhile. (Though the slow-mo and dramatic music makes it seem like forever…) When the time comes for Marga to give birth and give up a baby, how will that affect her? Will she change her mind and have the baby forcibly taken from her?
But as for now, Marga is happy to have a child with a stranger and give the baby up for adoption as soon as the pregnancy is over. To her, this is an act of patriotism (as ghastly and violating as the idea is to us as a modern audience). As she can’t take part in combat like her brother, and career choices were limited for young women then, Marga must think this is her best chance at doing something patriotic.
This is Nazi Germany’s version of women “doing their bit.”
Ugh.
Marga’s ambition doesn’t come out of nowhere. Nazi Germany placed a high premium on having children. In fact, there was an award for mothers of large families (which meant more rations and social privileges) introduced in 1939. Concepts of beauty and womanhood pointed to marriage and motherhood, as that was (and still is) generally expected for women after a certain age, but doubly so in a country with a government obsessed with eugenics.
(I could write a long meta on the role of gender in the past two episodes alone.)
Having grown up being exposed to Nazi propaganda and strict gender expectations, it’s not unbelievable that a sixteen year old (who would not know much about the physical dangers of pregnancy and childbirth–especially for a young person) would think of this in vague terms of “honor” and “duty” instead of the way Gertha feels but can’t put into words–that this is a life-changing and invasive situation that she is too young to handle or see clearly. It’s a horrible irony that perhaps the first big choice Marga makes for her life is to get out from her parents’ control…and under the government’s.
Gertha and her teacher, Herr Trutz, are more worried for Marga than she herself is, and both are betrayed to the Gestapo. Marga turns Gertha in for treasonous activity, and Gertha is intimidated into giving up her teacher’s name to spare her parents. This is unfortunately not an overexaggeration of how many children were taught to put their country above their friends and family, even if it meant turning in those closest to them to avoid the taint of association with anti-Nazi sentiment. But while Marga does not see what happens to Gertha, Gertha once again gets a clearer picture of the sinister reality. She tearfully apologizes to Herr Trutz as he is dragged, bloody and hardly able to walk, through the prison. Her teacher responds with understanding, even in agony.
“We’re all going through hell, Gertha. We do what we must to survive.”
But there's a line between compromising yourself for survival and for benefit.
The French Storyline
We finally learn what happened to Henriette and Albert! And it’s…not great. They’re still alive, at least. Henriette is now a major part of the resistance cell in the American hospital in Paris, even as the Germans crack down on anyone with suspicious or missing identification papers (which, since Henriette admitted last season she was working under a false surname, is going to be a problem for her).
To complicate matters further, her little brother Luc shows up in the hospital and begs her to help him escape. Like a typical big sister, she berates him but agrees to help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We quickly learn that Henriette has gotten much deeper into the resistance since we last saw her. Now she has a gun concealed in a supply closet and does not hesitate to point it at the locked door when Germans try to enter the room. When the coast is clear, she points Luc to a secret exit through the cellar. They embrace and she says that they’ll be together again soon. But Luc is captured anyway.
He is taken to a local prison camp, the same one where Albert is, and the same one where Henriette drops off Red Cross packages for the prisoners. Albert recognizes her and agrees to help her get Luc out on the condition that she leave and not return. It’s the same thing he wanted for Webster last season. Hurt them to save them.
She gives him a package with a small vial and a note that says simply, “Drink me.”
Closing Thoughts
Tumblr media
So there’s one thing I’ve been holding off on mentioning thus far, as I don’t want to turn this into a rant instead of a review, but…they skipped the Christmas Blitz. It’s set in Manchester, and they skipped the Christmas Blitz…
The closest we get is David joking about how the Germans chose to attack on Hannukah after other pilots complain about it being almost Christmas, then the standard dog fight sequence, and Lois packing her things as the furniture trembles from distant bombs landing.
So………….if you haven’t seen my past posts and fanfic, this is a special interest topic for me. And I expected the show to cover it, seeing as the two night raids over Manchester with massive loads of firebombs and explosives destroyed so many significant cultural and industrial landmarks. The event was important enough to get a name, after all.
And yet. Nope.
It would have been very easy to move Lois’s injury from October to December. In fact, it would have given us more time to see what being an ambulance driver means to Lois and Connie while still tying this plot point into the bigger history of Manchester.
We could have seen how the Chase household (not being in Manchester proper) reacted and came together. Heck, we could have seen Robina and Sir James crammed together in an air raid shelter. Surely falling bombs would bring back Kasia’s memories of the invasion of Warsaw? No? What about Jan? Anyone?
I don’t understand this decision, and I don't like it.
But that’s my big complaint with this episode. And anyway, what else is fanfiction is for? More importantly, there are several books out there that touch on this long overlooked subject if you’re interested.

I am enjoying masters of the air but I will say my one critique with regard to acting is alot of them are struggling to eye act and convey emotions through their eyes. Cause your face is covered in these flight sequences you gotta use them eyes.
Tom hardy is really one of kind, I am thinking about how good he was in dunkirk and batman in just using his eyes to really capture the intensity of the moment.
I love Tom Hardy... He's one of the best 😊 He tends to stand out no matter what film he's in.
Re: MOTA... I don't know what will happen in the story as the series goes on, but so far I haven't felt that the cast is doing a bad job conveying emotion in the air imo. Most of them look pretty scared and intense to me lol. Also keep in mind that different characters will react differently depending on their role and rank among the other men. For example, when you're a Major, you can't be freaking out scared, cuz then your whole squad that you're leading will freak out if you're losing it up there lol.
Granted, you're probably not gonna get the same gut-level reaction as you would see in a film like say "Top Gun: Maverick", where the cast was actually LITERALLY in the air flying in F-14s and F/A-18s, etc lol. 😅 I don't think this series had that type of budget lol 😅
But overall, I feel like the cast is doing well so far? 🤷🏾‍♀️But you don't have to agree.

Hello Marte! So to draw attention away for a bit from what´s currently happening...what´s your opinion on DWD and MP? I know that like last week you mentioned that H can´t act and that´s why he was so bad at DWD while in MP he didn´t really act and it was much like being himself. Can you please tell me more about this because I´m curious about your opinion. And what about Dunkirk which basically started his acting career out of nowhere?
My opinions are that I kinda take MP as a document rather than film because it fits H´s life like crazy and in my theory he went for this role as a huge signal for everyone - to show everyone who he really is (while people still are blind and deaf to hear and see him). And also I find it very obvious now when I found out he was probably reading the book (there´s a photo of him where he has the book in his coat pocket) back in like Feb 2020 when still noone expected what will come next month and how his tour planned for that year will be postponed.
And DWD? Oh it´s just weird seeing him playing heterosexual husband but that´s probably as you mentioned - because he can´t act enough to make people at least believe his role.
Hi, anon!
Yes, i don't think harry can act. At all. It might just be a me problem. But when you've spent years and years analysing his every micro expression, and knows all his tells, nervous habits, when he's lying or playing straight, seeing him act just falls flat for me. He's going through the motions but there are no real emotions to tap into for him to be able to express them in a way that translates to film. Seeing him act in scenes with emma, who's great at acting, just makes harry's lack of skills painfully evident. It makes you wonder why he was cast in the first place (i know why...). He's also taking the opportunity away from other more skilled actors. I feel from the dunkirk interviews that his other castmates felt some resentment towards him for that reason. I don't think they got along very well. I do agree with you when it comes to his motivation for taking the role in mp.
I've only seen mp, i haven't seen dwd or dunkirk. Too much second hand embarrasment there. Mp was mostly okay, but some scenes he's just not skilled enough to handle. It was overplayed, his emotional reaction to his costars portrayed emotions was unproportional. I cringed watching those scenes. I hope he's got acting out of his system now and realised that he's better suited to other things. He's not got a talent for acting imo.

i’m like, so late, but for the writer asks: 7, 20, 39 and 56.
39 is optional!!
Oop, sorry, I took a nap. It is never late to send me some asks!!
Below the cut:
7. How do you choose which POV to write from? That's one of the first things that I "decide" when I start a fic. It's an unconscious thing, whichever POV feels more natural to me given the setting etc. I choose POV based on what ways I want to flesh out my characters: for example, I write from the POV of the character who I want to have more introspection, and then the other characters I flesh out through the eyes of my POV. I dunno, it just comes naturally, I never think about it consciously.
20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc? I've got a lot, lol. For example, I noticed that my past two Käärijan angst/denial of feelings prompts were quite the same. But I think my readers would find these patterns more easily than me. I dunno any examples right off the top of my head.
39. Share a snippet from a WIP Not my first ride. Rode, Jere assured him when Bojan tried and failed to mask his panic once it dawned on him that they've been snowed in.
Ridden, Bojan added in his head. There was only one ride to have in the cabin, and it wasn't going to happen.
A bit of cabin fever never hurt anyone, eh?
No wonder Jere was understandably hesitant at first when Bojan - out of the blue, and rather drunk (on courage and adrenaline) at the time - suggested that he visit Finland at the height of winter. Somewhere far north, where the sun never rises. Maybe his cabin fever developed back in the studio, locked inside a prison of his own creation, a solitary cell with a door that could only be opened from the outside. Deliberately designed by Bojan.
Sometimes being the damsel in distress was rather freeing.
59. Of the characters you write for, which is your favorite? Has that choice been swayed at all by your followers/readers’ reactions to certain ones? I love writing Bojan, of course, and for my SAS Rogue Heroes fics, I love writing Eoin McGonigal. For my Dunkirk fics, I loved writing Collins! And no, my choices are never swayed by others, I write what I feel like writing.

I agree with you wholeheartedly him being nominated would not be a good thing. Can't even begin to imagine the reaction.
It would be swift and unpleasant 😔

With some notable exceptions, the general critical consensus on Harry's performance in My Policeman is that he was not a skilled and/or experienced enough actor for the role, to the film's detriment. If he were to be nominated, I believe it would be a very unpopular move both in the industry and with general audiences. It would be seen as pandering to celebrity (and my personal opinion is that a Golden Globe nomination for Harry in My Policeman would be pandering to celebrity).
Harry's status as a hugely popular and successful singer means that he already has access to lucrative and leading roles that other more experienced but less well known actors do not have. I think Harry's approach to entering the movie business (going through a rigorous casting and auditioning process for Chris Nolan and securing the Dunkirk role on merit) helped him build a reputation as someone who's willing to put the work in, and that has stood to him.
But if he starts receiving hugely high profile and valuable award nominations that don't appear to be based on merit...? That reputation and the accompanying goodwill towards him will suffer.
