I honestly really wish the plate scene was just a tad longer, or what I mean is, I wish the scene lingered for a bit more, for the audience to REALLY take in what was going on. Don’t get me wrong, the scene itself was perfectly slow and quiet to set the mood of realization and heartbreak, but at the same time I thought it moved by just a teeny too fast, especially since I’m one of those people who thought the movie’s pacing started to go really fast once Mirabel met Bruno.
Tumblr media
Now I will be honest, one of the problems I actually had here was how Mirabel reacts to all of this. Basically, I didn’t really like how after she sees the carved plate on the table, and learns how Bruno’s been eating dinner with them for the past 10 years as well as hear him express how much he loves his family, she immediately just…..asks him about the vision and nothing else. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Mirabel doesn’t care or was selfish, I just expected a bigger reaction, or a few lines at least before she brings the vision back up. This scene alone is a heart wrenching realization for the audience, but since Mirabel as a character doesn’t really say or do anything that relates to this, it kinda irks me in a way. Now again, don’t get me wrong, because we clearly see by her amazing facial expressions when she looks at the plate how torn up she is about this, learning that her uncle the entire time DID care about his family and she immediately has sympathy for him, but still, I was expecting her to attempt to comfort him, or say SOMETHING before the subject of the vision was brought back up again to not ruin the emotional moment. Now her being concerned about the vision obviously isn’t a bad thing within itself, it’s a big deal and she needs to know the answer to why she’s in it, she’s eager and wants to help, ESPECIALLY since time is of the essence because of the magic dying, but the fact that she learns her uncle has been here the entire time for 10 years, that he’s alive and deeply cares for his family, only to immediately ask about what she came here for without really fully reacting or accurately processing this information was kind of a let down for me. However, I will say that I don’t think Mirabel herself or the writing is at fault, I just think it’s clear that this was the point of the film where they REALLY had to move things along. I just bring this up because had Mirabel said a line or two relating to what she saw regarding the plate and all before she gets back to asking about the vision, this scene would have flowed better in my opinion, and would have been even more emotional than it already was. Heck, the other big reveal with Bruno didn’t really flow well in my eyes either, where they reveal he left to protect her. Mirabel realizes it and asks, but then Bruno eventually makes a joke and tries to rush her out, and there just…….isn’t enough time to really process this emotional realization, for the character AND the audience. Again though, I don’t blame the writers or anything, it just sucks that in some scenes, you can tell they had to move things along.
Anyway, this scene overall is still REALLY good of course, gets me in the feels every time. I love Mirabel and Bruno as a duo, how they both want the same thing, and how they both are the sort of outcasts who deeply care for their family. The emotional moments with them will always get me, I do wish there were more scenes with them interacting because they’re just amazing characters to bounce off of one another! With that said, feel free to disagree with me on anything I’ve said, this was just a personal opinion that I wanted to get out. Thank you for reading!

So I’ve said before that I have a few critiques with Encanto here and there, (even though the movie is amazing of course) and I felt like sharing one small critique today!
Tumblr media
So since the movie starts out with Antonio’s ceremony, then goes from that to Isabela’s engagement to the ending, I feel as if we never really got to know any of the characters as THEMSELVES fully without the plot, if that makes sense. (For example, I don’t know if the way Isabela treated Mirabel was how she NORMALLY acted all her life, or was just acting like that for the events of the movie or not) What I mean is, since all these things in the movie are happening that would make the characters under stress or react to something, we never fully get to know how they are on a normal day, what they’re like in general without a big event happening. While it is easy to predict how some characters would act by what we’ve seen (like Mirabel and Félix would be upbeat, or Julieta and Luisa would be caring) I feel like the movie should have started out a few days before Antonio’s ceremony, so then we can get a feel of how each character and each dynamic is, or at least most of them since the family is so big. Like maybe it would open with Mirabel telling stories to the kids about what her family is like, (just like the song but longer) and we have a short montage of how things run in the casita, THEN skip to the day preparing for Antonio’s ceremony. Now you could say Encanto is one of those movies where you figure out what some of the characters and dynamics are like THROUGH the events of the movie, and yeah I agree, but I still feel like if the movie had given a little time to the characters and even the setting (because I’m curious on the village, mainly how the village views Mirabel personally and her family) before the plot moved forward, (because I will admit the beginning is a little fast paced to take in everything) it would have been better, better than it already WAS though that is lol.
Encanto is still one of my current obsessions, so I certainly plan on sharing more critiques because I have a few more, and the reason why I say “critiques” is because even though there’s a shitload to praise, I can’t really say what anyone else has already said about this movie, it’s just phenomenal in so many ways, at least to me, so it would kinda be boring if I kept saying “this movie is good” over and over again, so why not share a few nitpicks and stuff I had right? So stay tuned for that, though I probably will praise it from here and there once and awhile.
Also I don’t know how this fandom is, so I’m a little scared to be honest to share critiques in general with this movie since it’s so huge, so please do not harass in the comments! I love this movie to bits but I still would love to share personal issues I had in the near future! ❤️

All this aroace character shipcourse has proven to me that a majority of people that interact in fandom cannot actually interact with characters and media outside of shipping and genuinely I believe you need to learn how to interact with media outside of shipping.

Thinking about the Dawnfather. A god of light, a god of harvest, a god of the sun itself. Good but not nice, kind but not soft. Life-giving but also scorching. Protective, warm, and kind, but also stern, harsh, and abrasive. His light can foster growth, can protect and guide, but it can also scorch and burn. The sun is warm and nurturing but don’t stare at it too long, child, it’ll blind you.
Was he always so hard? Did he always hide his face with the harsh light of the sun? Or was there a time when he smiled and laughed, let others see him as he truly was?
Thinking about the Schism. Was the Dawnfather close to the Betrayer Gods before they turned? He must have been, Asmodeus wouldn’t be so hung up on him if he wasn’t. Speaking of Asmodeus, he was once a being of light, like the Dawnfather and the Everlight are now. Were they closer than the others? When the Gods came to Exandria, did they come from the same place or were they scattered, a ragtag group of survivors fleeing from predators seeking to devour them? And if the latter is true, did these three beings of light come from the same place? Siblings, born from the same stuff, forever tied to one another?
If this was the case, then, what was their relationship before the Schism? Did they call each other “Brother” and “Sister”? Did they hold each other when they were scared, dry each other’s tears, laugh and joke and tease and fight and make up because they were siblings and they’d always be together, and they loved each other with every fiber of their being and they only had each other. When Predathos came, when it devoured two of their newfound siblings, did the Dawnfather hold them both and promise them that everything was going to be okay because he was their brother and he was going to protect them, all of them. The gods, mortals, the world itself, they would not be devoured, they would not be destroyed, because he was there and would fight until his very last breath to keep them safe.
Wondering then, was that the moment when Asmodeus truly grew to hate their creations? Seeing his brother and sister and siblings risk their lives just to protect some mewling mortal wretches when they could just leave it all behind and start somewhere new. Was that the moment when he realized that mortals had done something to them, changed them when they were not supposed to change. Why else would they risk being devoured by Predathos, why else would they suffer through war with the Primordials? Why else would they choose them over him!? Was this the moment when he decided to conspire with the Primordials and the other Betrayer Gods? To destroy this world and the mortals on it so they could finally leave. And they would leave, of course, because the Dawnfather was his brother and the Everlight was his sister and the Gods were a family, and at the end of the day, they would always be together, and once the corrupting influence of those mortals was gone, they would surely all see reason.
And when the Dawnfather discovered this betrayal, when all the Prime Deities did, he must have been furious. How could they!? His kin, his brother, who had always been by his side through everything, how could they turn around and destroy their creations, their children. And so he and the other Primes took up arms and fought against their own family to protect this world they had created, and their children who inhabited it. Those battles must have been brutal, bonds of comradery broken, kin clashing against kin, screaming curses as they tore each other apart.
During those final battles of the Schism, when the Dawnfather clashed against Asmodeus, did they scream at each other in rage? A twisted reflection of previous squabbles, different because this time it was real, this time there is no forgiveness, no making up. When the Dawnfather knocked Asmodeus down, crushed his throat under his foot and banished him to the Hells, was he yelling when he disowned him? Or was he quiet when he did it, his voice going into a low growl, deadly calm as he told him that he was not his brother anymore. And moments previously, when the Dawnfather could have easily killed him, did he look into Asmodeus’s eyes and see his brother? Scared and hurt by his hands, hands that once held him and swore to protect him. In that moment, did the Dawnfather realize he couldn’t kill him? Because that was his brother and despite everything, he still loved him, and hurting him brought him more grief and pain than he could ever imagine. So instead, he banished him, locked him and all the other Betrayers away because he and the other Primes couldn’t bring themselves to kill their family, but they also couldn’t let them free.
Was this when the Dawnfather obscured his face? Hardened his heart because otherwise he would break, and he cannot break, because the other gods need him to be strong, because Exandria needs him to be strong. And so he stayed strong, despite the grief, despite the guilt, despite the pain of heartbreak, of hurting the ones he loved to protect the ones he loved. And this hardening must have continued, running himself ragged during Calamity, beating back Tharizdun, protecting Ioun after she almost died, sheltering the Everlight after Asmodeus once again betrayed her, stabbed her in the back and left her broken and weak when all she wanted was to do was get her brother back, to save him from his own wrath. Failure after failure after failure to protect those he cared about, to protect his siblings and mortals and Exandria itself. The guilt of his failures must be overwhelming, and these are his failures: Predathos devoured his siblings under his watch, his siblings betrayed them under his watch, Calamity ravaged Exandria under his watch, and even now, the threat of Predathos has once again returned under his watch.
No wonder he is so harsh now, so controlling now: because every time he has failed in his vigilance the world has suffered for it. He can’t fail again; he can’t lose any more siblings. And so, he continues hardening his heart, continues fighting, because the sun must always rise again in the morning, no matter what.

Round Three - Phytomancy (plants, vegetation) 1/4
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut (beware of potential spoilers!!)
Keyleth:
No propaganda :(
Isabela:
Isabela has NO apparent limits to her Gift, it's versatile, she doesn't need plants to already exist, there doesn't seem to be any limit to what sort of plants she can grow, or how much of a plant, even - like 90% of her Gift use was just flowers, maybe with a bit of greenery - she can disappear the plants at will, she can replace petals with a different color, even fast enough for the cool visuals during What Else Can I Do?, she made plants that don't even exist irl(the dye plants) plus also she is gorgeous.

The "male favoritism" in the encanto fandom was insane
People really watched a movie about amazingly well written female characters suffering from generational trauma and decided to make everything about this dude who had 3 minutes of screentime

Isabela, complaining: There's so many beautiful girls and I have nobody in my family to discuss them with...
Bubo: Uh... What about Luisa? She has a girlfriend, right?
Isabela, throwing her hands dramatically: Exactly! Who did allow her to get relationship before me?

Sorry, we took your story’s themes about healing and compassion and decided that it’s actually apologism. Yeah, stories should only have the audience empathise with unproblematic characters. Humanising a character is now the same as excusing their actions.
Also redemption must be reserved only for characters that we deem acceptable of change.

I Finally Watched Encanto
And it was very underwhelming. I don't get what the hype was about. It was mid at best. The best thing about it was probably the visuals. Oh, I loved the variety of skin tones! Usually, I don't care about skin colour in movies but for some reason, it stood out to me in this one. The intro and outro scenes were good too.
I am not a film expert so I can't convey what made the film fall flat for me. But here are some things that I found lacking:
The music is not memorable and I found it hard to immerse myself in it. I absolutely hated Surface Pressure. Some parts of We Don't Talk About Bruno were nice to listen to but it still wouldn't make the top 10 of my Disney songs list. It's not a song I would sing to myself. I can't even remember any of the lyrics besides the title namesake. I think my favourite piece was the Caterpillar song that played for Abuela Alma and Pedro. Maybe partly because it's in Spanish so I have lower expectations for it lol. Since I barely speak Spanish and all.
The family members kind of felt like plot devices? That just appeared when the plot called for it? I am not sure how to explain it but the main culprit for me was Isabela. She was basically a nothing character who was just there in the background being a prima donna and rolling her eyes. Then once Mirabel supposedly has to confront her, she has all this major development in like 2 mins and finally cracks? Luisa was way better because I saw her insecurities and how weakness made her feel worthless throughout the movie. I don't understand why Cousin Camilo was needed in the movie. His dad was good enough comic relief. I loved Antonio at the start and his relationship with Mirabel. I wanted to see that relationship more in the movie so much. But then even he began to feel like a cheap plot device.
How Bruno was handled was unsatisfying. The whole plot about Bruno just felt contrived. Bruno is supposed to be the family undesirable who no one talks about...but Dolores knew about him the entire time? The ending with Abuela and Bruno felt so rushed too. I thought the climax would have involved Bruno more but he just showed up at the end and now everything is ok? Bruno was just a way to show Mirabel how special she was and once that happened, everything about Bruno was wrapped up in a neat tidy bow.
The plot development was poor and felt like a plot in an adventure game. Gave me similar vibes to the plot in The Rise of Skywalker. How Luisa just happens to know Mirabel's starting point. How Mirabel just happens to find Bruno when the dude has been living unnoticed for how long. Even the ending with the butterfly almost made me roll my eyes.
The powers felt underdeveloped. I don't understand the limits of them and why only the Madrigals have them. Well, I guess it makes sense for the family to have the miracle to themselves as a kind of comfort for Pedro dying...like men don't sacrifice themselves for their families nobly all the time. How much weight can Luisa lift? What is the range of Pepa's powers? Mirabel said in her song that her mood affects the weather but the movie mainly shows the weather just affects her individual space. How do they control them? What if someone abuses their powers?
Anyway, its not a bad movie but I wouldn't watch it again. I preferred Coco over Encanto. The family relationship felt more developed and the focus was just on the family members relevant to the plot. The Abuela in Coco was more sympathetic and the generational trauma was way more justified there. Plus the music was better and the plot development felt more organic. I would watch Coco again. Encanto is just meh and seems a tad overrated.
