@erisweek2023 Day 6 - Arranged Marriage
Somehow combined my desire for Eris to have nice things with my want for Nesta to be away from the Night Court, and for Cassian to follow her somewhere for once.

Then There Were Three:
A Neapolitan Bonds Fic
Day One of @polyacotarweek : Beginnings
Summary: You are invited to the Autumn celebrations as an emissary of Dawn. The High Lord’s mate invites you to meet him after the party is over. Alternatively: The night the mating bond snapped.
MasterPost | Poly Week MasterPost| AO3 Link |
Pairing: Azriel/Eris/Reader | Rating: E🌶️ | Word Count: 4962
Warnings: heavy flirtations, slightly rough sex, Reader does panic near the end.
A/N: I did my best to be vague about the reader’s origins. I realized it leaves autumn out of her home court choices but you can pretend she’s from there if you squint and pretend she was raised elsewhere 😅

You grabbed a flute of champagne off the table in the corner and took a sip. Autumn champagne was so different. The breed of champagne fruit grown in Autumn retained some of the sweetness like those grown in the warmer courts. However, it had a crisp undertone from the chill air. It was one of your favorites and you needed to remind yourself to buy a bottle from the market before leaving the Court.
You looked out at the party taking another sip to steel your nerves. They called you the floating emissary behind your back. Not that you would deny that name. You’d made your home in almost the same amount of courts as your friend Lucien. You were no spy- just versed in law and good at making fair treaties. Thanks to that, you had a good reputation with the High Lords.
At the moment, you were employed by Dawn, sent with a few others to represent the court for the Autumn festival week. It’s been held since Eris Vanserra became High Lord but this was your first time attending it. The ballroom was filled with delegates and courtiers. There were also natives of Autumn, high fae and not, intermingling. The party continued out the door to the courtyard.
The courtyard itself was beautiful. The trees were so vibrant, more than the last time you saw them. You’d been here once before under Beron’s reign. That one visit was enough to have you never come back to Autumn while he lived. Thankfully, you never had an excuse to come back until now.
So much changed in the past few decades.
You decided you’d rejoin the mingling, maybe find a few other courtiers to chat up. You held your glass tight and went to step away when a tall male seemed to stop and turn to you. You immediately recognized him, his black hair and Illyrian wings giving him away.
“Lord Azriel,” you curtsied, free hand fanning out the skirt of the maroon dress you wore for the occasion.
“Just Azriel.” A smile ghosted his lips. His gaze never left your own as he asked, “I don’t believe we’ve met, Lady?”
“Y/N,” you replied. “Just Y/N.”
Amusement flashed in his eyes and across his face.
“And where are you from, Just Y/N?”
You knew in your mind that he was just being polite but your stomach still flipped on itself. If this was the High Lord’s mate and famed shadowsinger being polite you were terrified of what he could do when he was truly flirting.
“Depends. I’m a liaison for the Dawn Court, currently.”
“The Floating Emissary, I’ve heard of you.” His gaze raked over you and you felt your cheeks heat. “You’re much prettier than Lucien.”
“I would hope,” you laughed. “Handsome male that he is, I have to surpass his reputation somehow.”
His laughter rang out like a song. You steeled yourself again. The last thing you needed was the High Lord of Autumn catching you speaking with his mate and assuming you were flirting. Why it worried you, you weren’t certain. Possibly because Azriel was devastatingly handsome and easy to flirt with.
“Was there a reason you were hiding out over here by the drinks?”
“Taking a break. Parties require more small talk than some might suspect.”
He hummed in agreement. “Would you be up for a dance?”
Your mind seemed to stop working, trying to process what was just asked of you. You glance at the throne and the High Lord is gone. Part of you was disappointed at that. You decided to down the rest of your champagne.
“Of course.”
Azriel grinned at you. “I like your style.”
He held out his hand and you took it in yours. Your stomach flipped on itself again and the texture of his hand had heat flaring between your legs. You smiled and mentally shook yourself, trying to keep it together. Some of the crowd parted as he led you to the dance floor, though no one seemed to care.
“An Autumn dance?” Asked, his hand went to your waist and you inhaled sharply. “Or a Night Court dance.”
You told yourself the look in his eyes was just him being impressed. It was not the look of someone who wanted to devour you whole in the middle of the throne room with everyone watching. You watched his shadows swirl around your arms. Like they were studying you.
“Autumn,” he replied as the band started the next song. “Let’s see if you can keep up.”
You knew the song and took it as a challenge. Of course the dance he wanted was faster, and involved a lot of footwork and being close to your partner. Thank the mother your skirt slit, though hidden due to volume, was high.
“You must have a lot of practice,” you said as he guided you backwards. “It’s not the easiest dance with wings.”
He twirled you and pulled you back.
“It’s not. Nesta spent two weeks teaching me for my mating ceremony.”
Right. Azriel was mated to the High Lord. You glanced around, letting him guide you again. Your eyes widened when you made eye contact with that very male. He was watching you intensely. And speak of the Weaver and she shall appear. Beside him was Nesta Archeron herself, watching you just as closely until a tall Illyrian male- her mate, walked up beside her.
“Don’t mind them.” His hands didn’t leave your shoulder and waist but it felt like he’d gently tugged your chin. “They’re just enjoying the show.”
He said it as if he wasn’t doing a Fire Waltz with you. Thankfully you two were not the only ones dancing. You’d be mortified if everyone was watching. He twirled you again and pulled you flush to his back. You spent the whole time he walked you around like that focused on not letting your scent get away from you. Another twirl and you were back in front. You were imagining it, you told yourself; the slight sweetness of his own scent.
Thankfully the song ended. There were claps from the crowd for you and the others who danced. The High Lord nor Nesta and Cassian (you believed that was his name) were where you last saw them as you looked around. You thought Azriel would bid you good night, and part from you. Instead he leaned into you, and you held your breath.
He whispered into your ear. “A left from the main hall, three doors on the right. Be there after the party.” You could only nod. “See you then, Y/N.”
You didn’t exhale until he moved away, leaving you slightly dizzy and flushed.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
By the mother, what were you doing? A smart female would go to her room and forget whatever the Shadowsinger said. A smart female would walk in, explain her apologies and how she must go. The irrational part of you saw this as just an unconventional in for negotiations. It’s not bribery to flirt. Nor is it that unethical to speak in private with one of the heads of court.
You arrived at the door and could feel something like a tug in your chest to go in. Your nerves were getting the better of you. You looked down the hallway both ways twice. You could leave and write a note, explaining it’s improper for you to meet him this late. He would have to understand. However before you could make a decision the door opened.
In front of you was not Azriel. It was the High Lord, Eris. You’d never been up close to him before. The front of his long red hair was pulled back into braids, and his whole being glowing in his power. Amber eyes stared back into yours. You scrambled to gain your bearings, still too stunned to explain your presence. He raised a brow at you, expression like steel and your mouth opened and closed. You took a breath.
“High Lord,” you bowed. “Good evening.”
You straightened and you watched his gaze run over you.
“Come in, Y/N.”
You could have swooned with how your name rolled off his tongue. Gods what was wrong with you? He stepped aside and held the door. You forgot what you were thinking, stepping in past him. His scent made your eyes flutter.
You scolded yourself. You were a trained emissary; one of the best. Yet here you were losing your mind over a High Lord and his mate. Which said mate was sprawled out on a chair, wings spread and legs opened like he owned the place. He looked at you smugly when you raked your eyes over him.
“You requested to meet with me Lord Azriel?” Your voice was calmer than you felt.
Lord Eris shut the door, drawing your attention back to him. Even without the power radiating off of him, he was devastatingly handsome. He went past you and sat on the couch. Looking between the two of them; it was night and day almost.
“Just Azriel. Would you like a drink?”
“No, thank you. I think I had enough at your ball.” You looked at Eris. “It was very lively. Thank you for inviting us.”
Your subtle reminder that you did not come alone caught his attention. You could see it flash in his eyes. That didn’t seem to deter him.
“Have a seat,” he gestured to the chairs behind you.
You brushed the back of your skirt, pulled them forward so you didn’t sit on them awkwardly. You looked between the two males in front of you.
“Thank you for inviting me to meet you.” You used your most polite and naive tone. “Though I am uncertain what has warranted a private meeting.”
The High Lord and Azriel already had their own drinks on the tables beside them. The High Lord picked his drink up and took a sip.
“Azriel was explaining to me what a famous emissary you are,” he leaned back in his chair and crossed one leg over the other. “Giving my brother a run for his money.”
“I don’t know about all that,” you replied and straightened the front of your skirt.
“I think I do,” Azriel grinned at you.
The next few minutes encompassed Azriel listing out your achievements- the Summer Court trade route, for one. He brought the peace treaty between Spring and the Night Court. You argued Lucien did more work with that, considering he was mated to the High Lady’s sister. A few laws you overlooked during your brief time in Winter came up as well.
“Should I feel left out that I’ve never received the honor of you working in my court?” Eris asked.
“Are you trying to recruit me to be your emissary, High Lord?” You teased.
“You can rest easy knowing I’m not trying to steal you from Thesan,” he joked back. “However, I might invite you back more often if you can dance like that.”
“I saw you watching.” You crossed your legs. Unintentionally, the slit fell open. You ignored it even if the two males in front of you were eyeballing your legs now. “You’re mate is a very skilled dancer.
“He learned from the best.” Eris took a sip from his glass. “I almost married her for it.”
That you didn’t know. You filed that away in your mind to examine later.
“Don’t lie. You did that to piss off Cassian,” Azriel countered.
Eris rolled his eyes. You wondered if you should continue the small talk or be direct. Both the High Lord and his mate seemed to like the direct approach so you finally asked them.
“Why was I really invited here?”
“You know why.” Azriel kept a heated gaze on you as he downed the rest of the alcohol in his glass. “I wasn’t lying when I said you were pretty.”
Your mind was telling you to leave. The solar courts were more lax but this was Autumn. If anyone saw you, your reputation could be ruined. But you couldn’t move with both very handsome males staring at you like they wanted to eat you alive. Situations like this didn’t happen to you. Was it so terrible that you were enjoying the attention?
“You can leave and neither of us will stop you.” Eris reassured you. “Nor will it be held against you. This is strictly off record. It’ll be as if it never happened.”
“As if staying is any better?” You countered.
“Do you think so little of us that we’d allow your reputation to be ruined?” Eris chuckled.
“A female can never be too careful.” You wished you had taken another drink. If only to give your hands something to do. “Do you always recruit a female from your parties or am I special?”
It was meant to be a joke. A tease really. There was nothing teasing in Azriel’s eyes when he replied.
“You’re the only one we’ve ever agreed to make an offer to together.”
Heat flared between your legs and you knew your scent betrayed you. Especially with that wicked grin Eris had on his face. You squeezed your legs together and barely kept your composure.
“What would you like me to do?” You whispered.
Azriel held up his hand, fingers curling to beckon you over.
“Come here baby girl and let me show you.”
~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*`*~*~*~*~*~*~
If you told yourself yesterday you’d be falling into bed with a High Lord and his mate, you would have laughed. Then you would have asked in what world Helion would agree to share his bed after centuries of waiting for his mate to be free. Falling into the High Lord of Autumn’s bed? Impossible.
And yet.
Azriel was behind you, kissing your neck. His hands had pushed down the top of your dress on one side so he could cup your breast and roll your nipple between his fingers. Eris sat on the edge of the bed, hands up your skirt and pulling down your panties. Once they were off he pulled you forward by the hips and moved your knees onto the bed so you straddled him.
You fell back against Azriel, moaning when Eris wasted no time slipping a hand up your skirt and pushing two fingers into your slick heat. Azriel chuckled at you, pulling his mouth off your neck. You reached your arm back, hand grabbing his hair if only to hold onto something. Eris didn’t even move; you rode his fingers, thighs brushing against his pants.
You whined when he removed them only to be silenced when he stuck them into your open mouth. You hummed against them, sucking on them. He didn’t anticipate you would lower yourself on his lap and rub against the bulge in his pants, by the groan he made. Azriel had worked the zipper in the back of your dress down and it was hanging limply on your arms.
“Soon pretty girl,” Eris said and took his fingers out of your mouth.
Azriel removed your hand and arm off of him and Eris pushed up your dress. Azriel tossed it aside just like Eris had your undergarments. You were about to protest, you being nude while they were not, then Eris snapped his fingers. The clothes on himself vanished, and you inhaled sharply at the feel of his bare skin against your own. Azriel was naked as well, judging from the hard length against your back.
“Nifty trick,” you said, running your fingers over the dusting of hair on his chest.
“It is useful.” He looked about as hyper aware of the fact his cock was pressed against your cunt as you were. “Who do you want first?”
“Depends on how you want me.”
They invited you. You were not going to insult one by picking the other first. Eris’s gaze went behind you to Azriel. He looked back at you with a knowing smirk.
“How is your reflex?”
His hand came up and cupped around your neck. He didn’t squeeze, just brushed his thumb against your skin. You wonder if he knew what a power move he just made. Surely he could feel how wet you were. Az put his hands on your waist, waiting.
“Okay, I guess.” You replied. “It’s decent.”
He hummed, removing his hand. “Azriel gets you first then. He can be rough and we don’t want to ruin that pretty throat of yours yet. Are you okay with taking me in your mouth while he fucks you?”
“Yes,” you replied very quickly.
“Good.”
Several things happened at once. Eris moved from under you and down the bed, while Azriel lifted you up with his arms. He hooked his hands and arms under your thighs and lifted you up, carrying you for a moment before dropping you back onto the bed. You screamed when he did that, which had them both laughing at you.
“Not used to being handled properly?” Azriel bent you forward over Eris’s lap, your hands propping yourself up.
“No.”
You couldn’t think of a witty response. Not when his hands were lifting up your hips to positions exactly how he wanted you. And Eris- the scent of him surrounded you while you watched him stroke himself.
“Open your mouth, princess.”
You opened your mouth and stuck out your tongue. When you did that, Azriel grabbed your ass and you felt him spread you open. He pushed into you and you forgot what you were doing, dropping your head with a moan. Azriel was big, you gave him that much. He held you by the hips until he was damn near pressing into your stomach. There was no movement from him as you adjusted. Until he grabbed you by the hair to lift your head. You were looking at Eris again.
He whispered into your ear, “open your mouth.”
You did so again. He let go of your hair and lowered your mouth onto Eris’ cock. He was big too. You went down as far as you were comfortable with and rubbed your tongue against him.
“Good girl,” Eris murmured.
That made you clench around Azriel. There seemed to be an understanding in that moment. When you bobbed your head, Azriel pulled out and slammed back into you. Azriel was indeed rough. He took exactly what he wanted from you, your whole body moving in time with him. Eris was stroking your hair while you used one hand to make up for what you couldn’t take into your mouth. You finally pulled off of Eris, salvia stringing from your mouth to the head of his cock.
“Touch me,” you turned to almost look back at Azriel. “Please, I can’t,” you didn’t know how to express what you wanted or why. Your hand still stroked Eris, your other arm starting to shake.
You felt the weight of Azriel shift on your back and his arm hook around your waist. You fell face first into Eris’s thigh when Azriel’s fingers found your clit. You even stopped stroking the High Lord. How were you supposed to think when Azriel was hitting all the right spots inside and outside of you?
Then Azriel pulled out of you. You yelled in protest- until he was lifting you up and spinning you around. These two males had to have a routine. Azriel put you right into Eris’s hard length like it was nothing. Before you could think, his hand was in your hair, pushing his length into your mouth. You could taste yourself on him and it made you dizzy. More movement behind you: Eris had shifted onto his knees.
They moved in sync, more so than before leaving you to sit there and take it. Eris lifted your hip up at a different angle that had you seeing stars. Azriel was gagging you and being just as rough as Eris promised. In no time, your orgasm was rushing through you with unstoppable force. Your muffled moans had Azriel spilling down your throat. You’re certain Eris followed and came inside you.
You were a wreck when they both pulled out of you.
“You did so well.” Azriel wiped the tears off your cheek while you caught your breath.
There was drool all over your mouth and you could feel Eris’s cum slipping out of you. You needed to clean yourself up. You went to move off the bed and ask where the bathroom was. Instead you pulled back onto the bed with an invisible force. You were held there on your back by your arms; shadows pinning you down. Eris snapped his fingers and you were mostly clean again.
Eris grinned down at you. “Oh love, did you think we were done with you? We’re just getting started.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
You waited until their breathing evened out before easing out of bed. Looking for your dress in the dark on wobbly and sore legs wasn’t ideal, but you needed to get back to your room before someone noticed you were missing. Samira would not believe you if you got caught sneaking into your guest chambers. You found it and slipped it on, fighting with the zipper and giving up when you got it halfway up your back. Shoes were next. Your underwear was nowhere to be found.
You huffed. The last thing you wanted was for them to find it and return it with a smug grin. You finally found it by the bathing room door. Slipping them on, you didn’t hear bed creak or the sound of footsteps until something whispered your name.
“By the cauldron,” your whole body jolted, heart racing. You turned to see Azriel behind you, thankfully wearing pants.
“Sorry,” Azriel chuckled. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s fine.” You caught your breath and whispered. “I didn’t want to bother you.”
“It’s no bother. I can winnow you into your room so you don’t have to walk.”
“That’s kind of you.”
He put his hand on your arm and when you looked him in his eyes- your whole body recoiled and you inhaled sharply. That tightness in your chest you felt all evening snapped. You took several steps back staring at him horrified. Your hand went to your chest. You stared at him with eyes wide and he stared back in what you were certain was horror.
What just happened was impossible. Azriel was with the High Lord. You needed to leave. Panic ripped through you at the implications. It was not possible- you were imagining it. You needed to leave. You took several steps back, not looking at Azriel. Maybe it was just you. Maybe you lost your mind. It had to be. There was no way-
Someone was calling your name.
You blinked. You’d backed yourself into a corner. You couldn’t catch your breath no matter how much you breathed in and out. A warm hand made you startle; you focused on amber eyes staring back at you and it happened again. That sharp tug in your chest like a rope going taunt.
“Look at me.”
A soft but firm command of a High Lord you couldn’t ignore. You blinked and you were crying. Strange emotions that weren’t your own were overwhelming you. It was too much, the sudden wave of feelings hitting you. Something cold wrapped around your wrists. You looked down and screamed, shaking your arms when you saw black lines.
“It’s just shadows,” Azriel said calmly from behind Eris. “They’re trying to help.”
“It’s alright,” Eris whispered, brushing your hair back with his hand. “Take a deep breath.” You did as you were told. “Good girl. Now breathe out.”
You found your voice even if it was laced with your tears. I didn’t. I swear it, I don’t know how.”
How do you explain that this wasn’t a trick? They had to think that. If they felt it then they had to believe you cast a spell on them. They could throw you in the dungeons for this or worse. What were the odds you climbed into their bed and- two tugs halted your thoughts. Warmth flooded your chest. You choked back a sob.
Eris sighed. “Az can you go get a calming tonic from the infirmary please?”
If he disappeared, you didn’t know. Eris dropped his hands to your shoulder and gently guided you backwards. Your legs hit the back of a chair; he gently sat you down into it and then knelt so he was eye level with you.
“I know this is a lot to take in. I promise you, we are not upset.” He took your hand in his and rubbed his thumb over your knuckles.
“I don’t understand,” you whispered. You swallowed and blinked profusely. “Aren’t you afraid I’ve placed a spell on you?”
You couldn’t say it out loud. Not yet. Eris laughed.
“We invited you to our bed. Was it that good you suddenly thought of a spell to cast in between orgasms to trap us?”
Your face heated at his remarks. Thankfully out of the darkness Azriel appeared with a vial. He handed it to you and you took it with shaky hands. You felt dramatic for your reaction but there was nothing you could do about it. Eris took it from you and uncorked it before handing it back. You downed it quickly. He stood and took the bottle from you, vanishing it into thin air.
“Well?” You looked between them after a moment passed. “Aren’t you going to say something about this?” You gestured between yourself and them, specifically pointing at your chest.
“It’s a mating bond, what else is there to say about it?” Eris replied.
Your stomach flipped at his candor and Azriel hummed in agreement. As if this happened all the time. Maybe they took a calming tonic also when you weren’t looking.
“How are you both calm? Mating bonds,” you forced the term out, still not believing it was real, “are between two fae not three!”
Azriel and Eris glanced at each other. Both of them had a knowing look. Azriel shrugged and Eris sighed. He turned to you, meeting your gaze again.
“Years ago we were told this could happen.” You blinked, something akin to shock washing over you. He continued. “We were told specifically that the light of dawn would bring forth a third bond.”
“Like a prophecy? That’s the corniest shit I’ve ever heard,” you replied without thinking.
Azriel bursted out with laughter. “I’m going to tell her you said that.”
You scoffed in response, uncertain of who she was. “You also said you didn’t plan to steal me from Thesan. You, High Lord Eris, are a liar.”
Now it was Eris who laughed. “Glad to see the tonic is working.”
If they had been told before- “So you knew it was me?”
“No, we did not. I felt a draw to you but,” he looked you up and down. “I think the reason is self explanatory.”
“My shadows took a liking to you out in the throne room,” Azriel added sheepishly. “But they didn’t tell me. The bond snapped for me when I touched you.”
Mates.
Mates, plural.
You had mates.
Realization sunk in and you slumped against the chair. You never entertained the idea of having a mate. For you it was an old wives tale, a fictional love story you read about in romance novels. Yes, they existed. But it seemed like it was reserved for High Lords and other important fae. You weren’t anyone special.
“I think,” Eris interrupted your thoughts. “We should rest. Azriel can winnow you to your room. We can talk in the morning if you are up for it.”
“Can I stay?” You whispered.
You had no right to ask that of a mated pair, let alone a High Lord you didn’t really know. However, the idea of leaving made you uneasy. Your friends would understand. Gods, how were you going to explain this? Yes, well a High Lord and his mate asked me for a threesome and surprise seems like I’m their mate too! You mentally groaned at how ridiculous this all was.
“Of course.” Eris pulled you out of your thoughts. “Azriel can get you a change of clothes from your room. If that’s alright with you.”
You nodded. This time you saw the shadows envelop Azriel. It was amazing to watch him disappear almost into a puff of smoke. However, that left you alone with Eris. Not that you cared. The potion was deeply in effect. You realized he was shirtless and your gaze ran over his bare chest and arms.
“We have a guest bed you can sleep in.” You looked up to see Eris with a slight smirk on his face.
“A guest bed?” You furrowed your brows. “In your own chambers?”
“Az’s wings are sensitive. Sometimes he doesn’t like to share a bed.” He paused. “I know I speak for us both that while this isn’t an ideal situation, we would like to get to know you. If you wish.”
“Are you asking for permission to court me, High Lord?” That did something for him because you could feel it before he shut it down. “I need to process it, I think.”
“That’s reasonable.” He gave you a soft smile.
You didn’t have to wait awkwardly for long as Azriel returned quickly with your bag. There was indeed a guest room right next to the High Lord’s bedroom, which still shocked you. As surreal as the past few minutes were, you were exhausted. You bid them an awkward good night and when Eris shut the door and you swore you heard him whisper something to Azriel, about how they owed his sister-in-law a lengthy apology.

Eris Week Day One: Family
Summary// As you prepare to birth your first child, Eris is taken back to when his mother went into labor with Lucien, especially as the same problem seems to arise. When you reach out your hand for him to stay, will he take it or will he be just like his father?
(The first fic of Eris week is here and I hope you guys love it so much!! It is pretty emotional and shows a softer, tormented side of Eris that I feel we definitely need to see more of in the books!)
@erisweek2023
WARNINGS: Childbirth, Trauma, PTSD, Blood
The contractions were coming in waves as Eris watched you hold onto one of the banisters of the bed, your entire body covered in sweat as you let out another scream of pain. You had been in labor since last night and now that the sun was setting once more, everyone was growing concerned about you and the baby.
“My lord,” One of the healers pulled him aside as your back arched, hand flying to your belly. “My lord, the baby…”
“What about the baby? What is wrong?” He snapped, his nerves on edge as the healer fumbled over his words. “Spit it out. What is wrong?”
“The baby is breech, my lord. He is coming feet first.” The healer explained quickly, dabbing a cloth across his face as Eris glared at him. “We need you to make a decision.”
“It is not his decision to make, it is mine.” You gritted out through your teeth, rocking back and forth as your body began to try and push your child out. The doctor warned you to stop but you couldn’t fight it, every muscle in your abdomen tightening as you looked at your mate, frightened. “Eris, please.”
“Are you asking me to decide between my mate and my child?” Eris whispered, face pale as the healer nodded. As another scream tore from your throat he was suddenly pulled back into a long-forgotten memory, his hands shaking as your body was transformed into his mother's.
“We need to get the High Lord. He has to decide.” The healer mumbled to his assistant as the Lady of Autumn laid on her back, legs spread while guttaral screams tore from her throat. “Hurry, there is no time.”
The healer left the room, poking his head out, only to find a young Eris waiting across the doorway. He immediately stood and walked to the door, palms sweaty. “What is it? Has she given birth?”
“We need your father.” The healer began, voice nervous. “There are complications that-”
Eris jumped when he heard his mother screech in pain, his eyebrows furrowing as he shook his head and tried to get into the room. “My father has left to hunt as he always does. He is not here. What decision needs to be made? Why is my mother not making it?”
“Tradition stands that your father needs to be the one to make the call. How soon can you fetch him?” The assistant pressed, turning when he heard his master calling his name in urgency. “Hurry! The baby is coming!”
“It would take hours. Please, tell me, what is happening?” Eris pleaded, his voice shaking as the assistant looked around for anyone else before sighing and allowing the young man inside. “Mother!”
“Eris,” The Lady of Autumn moaned, her clammy hand reaching out as her body urged her to push. “Eris, the baby…something is wrong-”
“The baby is breech. If it comes down to it, who would your father want to be saved?” The healer bluntly asked, blood staining his hands and forearms. “Who?”
“Should this not be up to my mother? Is this not her body?” Eris asked angrily, holding onto his mother tightly. “It is her decision. Mother, what do you want?”
“It is not-” The healer began but before he could finish the sentence Eris had flames circling his neck, not hot enough to burn but enough to let the man know he had no hesitation in ending his life.
“Do whatever she wants or you will regret it.” Eris threatened, turning to his mom who was watching him with fascination. “Hang on for me. You are so strong.”
She opened her mouth to respond but before she could reply, her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she went limp. Eris started shaking her, screaming her name, but she wouldn’t wake up.
The healer jumped into action while the doors flew open, Beron standing in the doorway in his hunting gear as he asked gruffly, “Well? What is it?”
“The babe has not been born yet, my lord. She is having complications and-” The assistant tried to explain but Eris cut him off, slamming his hand on the bed as he looked at his father.
“She is unresponsive. She is losing too much blood.” He spat through his teeth, turning her face towards him in worry. “She’s not going to make it if they don’t get it out of her.”
Beron took a deep breath, watching the flurry of moments of everyone in the room with disinterest, before turning and walking out the door and down the hall. Despite the chaos going on around him all Eris could hear was his father’s footsteps as he walked away from his mother, leaving her to die without a second thought.
As the healer and assistant were finally able to save his mother and deliver the baby, “Lucien” his mother had whispered when she finally came to, Eris swore that he would never, ever become his father.
“My lord?” The healer repeated, Eris blinking rapidly as he was brought back to the present. He turned to look at you, at your large, round belly, and finally at the blood that was dripping onto the floor as you squatted down and wailed.
“You will save both of them or I will have your head. Do you understand?” Eris said quietly, his voice dripping with venom as the man’s face paled and he swallowed thickly. He didn’t wait for a reply before rushing to your side and cupping your face, pressing your forehead against his own as he closed his eyes and breathed.
“I know you’re scared and I know you’re tired, my love. You have been so strong and I just need you to hold on a little longer, okay?” Eris cooed into your ear, wincing as you gripped painfully on his upper arm as the healer instructed you to finally push. “You are an amazing woman and although our child seems to have my stubbornness, I know everything will be alright.”
“Do you promise?” You pleaded, cheeks puffing out as you prepared to push again. “Do you promise everything will be okay?”
“I promise.” He nodded, kissing your cheek before taking your hand and looking to the doctor. “Now push.”
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
“Twins,” You whispered incredosouly as you held them both in your arms, the pillows soft against your back while you rested for the first time in days. “I can’t believe we had twins.”
“We still have to name them…” Eris smiled as he crawled in beside you, careful not to jostle the bed too much as he rested his cheek on the top of your head.
“I’ve already named them.” You smiled sheepishly, turning to the gaze at their sleeping faces. “Say hello to Sienna and Arista.”
“Sienna and Arista,” He hummed, pretending to be in deep thought while you rolled your eyes. “I love it. I love you.”
“I love you too.” You said softly, turning your face to kiss him and basking in the safe haven of your family of four. Eris wrapped his arms around the three of you, squeezing you for a moment before bending down to kiss each of their heads.
“I love you all too.”

By the time Nesta finished the last rotation, that absurd defiance of basic laws of movement and space, Eris had her hand again, spinning her three more times, his red hair glinting like fire as if in echo to the unchecked, dark joy bursting from her.
for day 5 of @erisweek2023 - dancing
this scene between eris and nesta was so iconic and absolutely breathtaking to read that i just HAD to do something with this prompt.
eris and nesta seriously made the most perfect dancing duo!! they complimented each other SO well with the whole ~nesta's inner fire matching eris' aura~, that it rly did birth the ship for me (and probably for other neris lovers as well). i need eris to dance again with nesta because it is in my humble opinion that nesta is the only dancing partner to have ever matched eris' energy...AND vise versa !!

“Knock knock,” came a soft, sweet voice. Arina turned from her usual haunt in the window, surprised to see an actual, living woman standing in the doorframe. She wasn’t from Avalonia if her high, starched neckline and her chestnut colored hair hidden beneath a pearl studded net was any indication. Arina sat up a little straighter as the woman stepped nervously inside. “I hope you don’t mind. Lucien mentioned you might welcome some non-Vanserra company.”
“I would,” Arina replied without mentioning she’d have welcomed any company that wasn’t the sneering, smug face of Eris Vanserra. He came every evening to insult her while seeming genuinely surprised she didn’t like him, hovering in the doorway until he was satisfied he’d done his duty and vanished.
“I’m Elain,” Elain told her, extending a delicate, gloved hand. Arina rose from her spot in order to shake it, delighting in the friendship etched over Elain’s face.
“Oh,” Arina said, because she’d heard the ladies at court gossiping about Elain. “I thought—”
“That I’d be pregnant?” Elain asked with a gleam in her eye. “Yes, I heard that rumor was going around. Lucien was caught kissing me and my father overreacted just a tad.”
“I’ll say,” Arina replied with a laugh.
“Don’t tell anyone, but it worked out for me. He never would have been allowed to ask me to marry him otherwise.”
“And that’s what you wanted?” Arina questioned.
Elain smiled, biting her bottom lip. “Yes, it is.”
“Well, someone should be happy to be married,” Arina declared, ignoring the look of curiosity Elain shot her. There would be time to confide everything given they were about to become sisters through marriage, but right then all Arina wanted was a reprieve from Eris.
That meant thinking about him and talking about him. Anything to escape him, even temporarily.
Unfortunately, it was all Elain wanted to talk about. For the first time since Arina had arrived, she allowed Elain to take her out of her bedroom. “When is the wedding?” Elain asked her, adding, “Lucien isn’t allowed to get married before Eris.”
Eris had such a big ego that Arina believed that was true.
“The end of the month,” she said with her usual glumness.
Elain’s smile brightened. “Rest assured, princess, that nothing happens on time in the palace. If they told you a month, expect six at minimum.”
“You’d wait half a year?” Arina questioned, wondering if Elain knew that Lucien had once been meant for Arina before he was caught. Did it bother Elain? Would it bother Arina were the circumstances reversed? Maybe, if she loved the man and thought the other woman loved him. The problem was Arina’s apathy. Lucien and Eris were nearly interchangeable given how little she knew about them. Maybe she and Lucien would have gotten on better, or maybe they would have been antagonists right from the start, too.
Maybe there was something about her when it came to Vanserra men. Whatever the case, Arina decided it was better to say nothing to Elain rather than risk the budding friendship between them. She couldn’t take another week locked up in her room with the company of a man she suspected had tried to kill her.
“I’d wait half my life,” Elain assured her cheerfully with a bounce in her step. “If you saw my home, you’d understand.”
“Where—”
“The North,” Elain interrupted, as though she’d been dying to say it. “It’s cold and dreary and even when it’s warm it's not. Here, at least, you have the benefit of all four seasons and proper warmth, you know?”
Arina could only nod her head.
“Have you seen the gardens?” Elain continued, plowing forward Arina’s emotional defenses with a single minded determination that could have made a soldier weep. “They were the first place I visited when I was brought here. You can tell a lot about a kingdom based on their royal gardens.”
Arina hadn’t seen anything in the palace and it hadn’t occurred to her to ask. Every time she considered it, Eris would appear with that disdainful smile of his and Arina was angry all over again. He acted as if she had done something to cause this marriage—like it was her fault. Arina hadn’t been consulted. She’d been a baby when the details had first been arranged. It was tempting to try and tell him that but Eris wasn’t stupid.
He wanted someone easy to blame.
And she refused to give him the satisfaction of trying just so he could break her down. If Eris wanted to be at odds then that’s what they’d be. Arina mulled it over as Elain dragged her out into warm sunshine toward a sprawling garden of greenery Arina just did not care about. A building in the distance caught her attention, though.
“Do you know what that is?”
“A kennel, I think,” Elain said, cheerful as ever. “Filled with hunting dogs so I’d stay away if I were you.”
Dogs?
Arina followed Elain, steps slowing as she recalled the little stray that she’d spent the better part of six months feeding, trying to coax it into the palace. She’d almost managed before her father spotted her and forced her to watch as one of his guards killed the animal outright. It was one of many hard, brutal lessons her father inflicted on her. She needed to be harder, colder, less compassionate.
But Arina still thought about that dog, so skinny she could see his ribs poking through spotted fur, and the big, warm eyes that had trusted her. What a mistake that was for the animal. Arina carried the guilt around like a sack of stones tied to her back, wishing she could go back and save it somehow. Save it from her father or herself, whichever was easier.
Did the king treat his animals well? It was all she could think about as her and Elain took a tour around the garden. Arina recognized she wasn’t being a good friend to Elain, who was clearly trying. Elain’s passion laid in the flowers around them, pointing each one out to tell Arina the names and little plant facts she’d gathered over the years.
“Do you know if there is a library in the palace?” Arina heard herself asking Elain as they began to double back through the maze of shrubs and trees all artfully planted around an immaculate lawn and careful, stone laid pathways.
“I’m sure there is. All palaces have one, right? Maybe Eris would know?”
Yeah, Arina bet he would. Perhaps Elain noticed her hesitation because she added, “I could ask Lucien? We could go together, if you like?”
Relief flooded through Arina. “I would like that.”
“I’ll get you a sun hat for the garden,” Elain continued undeterred by Arina’s lack of enthusiasm. “You read, I’ll plant.”
“Only if we can have a picnic while we do it,” Arina agreed, the scene stretching before her easily. Perhaps life wouldn’t be so bad with Elain around. Wherever Lucien was sent to once he was married could likely support her, too. They could be friends, living far from the palace having little adventures and general fun while Eris terrorized the capital.
Elain and Arina split ways once inside, leaving Arina to double back toward the kennels. No one paid her any attention, though a few guards watched with bemused expression until she got close enough she could smell the dogs in the air. Only then did someone in a fluttering, red cape and a white and gold uniform say, “Those dogs could kill you.”
“I won’t touch,” she promised, drawing her hands close to her chest. “The prince said I could be here.”
That was a lie and one that was likely to get her in trouble if Eris ever learned about it. But for the moment it also gained her access which was all Arina cared about. The inside smelled heavily of dog and some kind of minty cleaner, with rows of large, spacious cages that housed the animals. Arina didn’t know what she’d expected.
Something small and hungry like the dog from home. These creatures were big, tall enough that when one stood, blue eyes watching her with interest, the shoulders of the creature would have reached her hip. They weren’t starving with no ribs to be found, and glossy gray coats that were reminiscent of smoke.
They looked fast. Smart, too. No one was inside to watch her—the guards had turned their backs and were chatting amongst themselves. Arina dared to step closer to the cage of the dog standing and looking at her, palm held out in what she hoped was a friendly gesture.
“Hi,” she whispered, watching the dog also creep closer, ears perked up high and tail wagging ever so slightly. That seemed like a good sign, she thought. The two of them came closer and closer, until Arina dared to press her palm to the bars of the cage and the dog sniffed cautiously, his curiosity overriding his instincts. Or, perhaps, they weren’t as mean as the guards made them out to be. After all, all the dogs were sitting at the edge of the crates, some with thumping tails and others with soft, low whines.
Arina was looking at the dog in the next crate when the one smelling her hand offered her palm a tentative lick. She smiled, exhaling as she did. The dog licked again, tail thudding behind him and Arina whispered, “Good boy.”
She went around to all twelve dogs, daring to stick her fingers between the bars to scratch their noses as she became bolder. No one tried to chew off her fingers and by the end of the day, Arina was in a better mood than she’d been in months. She was going to wash her hands, dress herself nicely, sit beside Eris and beg him to let her take them out for a walk. She’d do whatever Eris asked, no matter how absurd.
Maybe things weren’t so bad, she reasoned. Her marriage was a political farce but there were other good things happening around her. Maybe she didn’t need love. Maybe having friends and a fulfilling life could be enough. Arina wasn’t one to give into pessimism if she could help it. The sun always returned, was still a force to be reckoned with and maybe she could be, too.
At least, she thought so right up until she felt something wrap brutally tight against her throat. Arina tried to pull, tried to struggle but whoever held her had an ironclad grip. Arina went down, lungs aching, thinking of the dogs in the kennel.
ERIS:
Eris hadn’t intended to meet his youngest brother’s fiance before the wedding. In his mind he figured he’d have to attend the wedding and he could introduce himself there. Tucked away in his study, lounging in a chair, Eris found himself taken by surprise when Princess Elain stepped inside without knocking, her arms crossed over her stiff dress.
“We need to get you a more interesting wardrobe,” Eris said the moment the door clicked shut behind her. The clothing of the north wasn’t practical or fashionable and had always been his one annoyance about Elain’s older sister Nesta. They were beautiful women dressed like nuns. Elain was, perhaps, the most egregious of the three given how effortlessly beautiful she was. It seemed a shame to put her in those heavy coats and tightly boned corsets.
“Oh?” Elain Archeron asked, her pretty, pink lips upturned with a smile. “Perhaps we could pick out a new wardrobe at the same time we work on your manners?”
“I deserved that,” Eris conceded, sitting up in his chair. “What can I do for you?”
“Where is the library?”
“Off-limits to you,” Eris replied with a small amount of curiosity. “Have Lucien give you the key.”
“It’s not for me. It’s for Arina.”
Eris loathed the way his body seemed to twitch with interest almost as much as he loathed himself for noticing. Elain didn’t notice and Eris refused to give in to the sensation even as his traitorous mouth said, “If she wants access, she’ll have to ask me.”
“She hates you.”
Eris stared at Elain. “I was told you were sweet.”
“I can be,” Elain replied, offering him a truly saccharine smile. “I don’t suppose you want to hear what I was told about you.”
No, Eris was certain he didn’t want to learn the court gossip that surrounded himself. Cruel bastard was likely the most common refrain—but Eris didn’t want to hear it, all the same.
“Well, as compelling as an argument that was, I’m going to regretfully decline. If my beloved wants to visit the library, she can ask me.”
“And you’ll take her?”
Eris didn’t believe for one moment Arina could read. His father had lamented how woefully uneducated women just a little further west to them were—how a formal education was often eschewed in favor of creating a dutiful wife, of which Arina seemed also unskilled at. No, if Arina wanted in the library it meant she was up to something nefarious and Eris would be there.
Supervising.
“Anywhere she likes,” Eris replied, flashing Elain his most convincing smile. Not that it worked on her, of course. Elain merely watched, brown eyes narrowed with suspicion. When had the palace become filled with women who hated him, he wondered? Once, Eris had walked these halls like a god. Now women stared him down with disdain in their eyes.
Well. Elain and Arina did.
But how long before their bad attitude affected everyone else?
“It was nice to meet you,” Elain assured him, her tone betraying that meeting him had been the exact opposite. Eris inclined his head, allowing Elain to leave as he reclined back in his chair, chin resting against his fingertips. So. Lucien’s former and current fiances had teamed up, had they? Formed a little alliance at court?
That annoyed him.
He could have gone to complain to Lucien, who was irritated that Eris was going to marry Arina even after Lucien himself had wrecked everything. Lucien had never considered the consequences of his actions and figured everything would work itself out because it always had.
For him. Not for anyone else, of course, but for him it always had and always would. Lucien got the woman he wanted but had to face down the reality that in doing so, Arina got Eris.
He considered going to his father and demanding Arina be kept away from Elain. Beron would see it done which was precisely what kept Eris in his chair. If his father thought secluding Arina away from court and isolating her from all potential friends was a good idea, that told Eris he was being unreasonably awful.
He didn’t want to align with his father on the personal. Rarely on the political. That didn’t mean Eris was going to stop what he was doing and rush to see Arina. He was in no mood for another showdown with a woman and instead returned to his work with renewed vigor. If there was one thing Eris always found motivating, it was avoidance. He didn’t want to talk to Arina and so work suddenly became fascinating.
His duties, once mundane, seemed to him almost special in comparison. And as Eris finished, well aware he needed to go see her, he had the realization that he wished he could grasp her by the shoulders and make her see that he had not wanted this either. That he had begged and negotiated and argued in circles trying to avoid the fate they’d now found themselves in.
If he could have freed her, he would have. Without hesitation.
He couldn’t. Not without enraging his father and risking a lot of people’s lives. Beron would hurt Eris but he wouldn’t kill him, not after the years spent grooming him to one day become king. In his way, Beron seemed to like Eris better than anyone else in his family. Perhaps it was being the hoped for, first born son that softened Beron—if Beron’s treatment of Eris could ever have been called soft.
He’d suggested just killing Arina’s father, absorbing the territory, and installing Arina at court. It had seemed like Beron might agree for a time before his advisors caught wind of the plan and promptly shut it down. There was nothing nobles hated more than seeing one of their own so easily deposed. It made them restless—hungry for blood. As far as Eris was concerned, this was their punishment for throwing their little tantrum.
Diplomacy had won the day, which meant none of their daughters would ever sit on a throne.
Arina had saved him from that, at least—he liked sleeping with the ladies at court but he didn’t want to be married to them. They lacked ambition, were merely puppets to their more powerful fathers who would attempt to weaponize their daughters against Eris and though Eris knew it wasn’t their fault, he resented them for it.
Was it so wrong to want someone to want him? Yes—and he knew better than to want it. Eris had pushed those notions away until they were so deeply buried he was convinced they didn’t exist anymore. Boys wanted love but men knew better. It was that thought that kept Eris from seeking out Arina until she didn’t come to dinner. Predictable behavior, he thought with some irritation—and rich, too, given she’d accused him of being a coward. Eris spent the better part of the evening preparing his speech to her in which he’d demand her silence as he informed her there was no escaping this marriage.
And to get used to it. They could figure the rest out later, though Eris wanted separate lives. He’d offer her up any of their numerous estates if she wanted to live somewhere else—after she gave him a son. Just one, he thought privately. The idea of having to sleep with an unwilling woman more than he was required to made his stomach turn.
Every step brought him closer to the proverbial hang man’s noose. Hells, but he did not want to have this conversation with her. Eris had nearly convinced himself not to go into her room at all when he arrived. But Arina had called him a coward and Eris needed to prove to her—and maybe himself—that he was no coward. He could do hard things.
He could…walk in on Arina laying dead on the floor.
“Fuck,” he breathed, crossing the room quickly only to slam to the ground, his knees screaming in protest. “If you godsdamn die right now—”
There was a cord twisted around her throat, tight enough it had left a bruise against her otherwise unblemished throat, but not so tight Eris couldn’t slide his fingers through and relieve the pressure against her airway. With his other hand, Eris lifted her floppy, lifeless body into his lap so he could undo the knot behind her tangle of thick hair.
She wasn’t dead. As he worked he saw the faint, frantic flutter of her throat pulsating against her skin. Close, maybe, but not dead and that was all that mattered. Arina began to take deeper breaths as color returned to the gold of her cheeks, chasing away the blue tinge of her lips.
Eris was certain he’d aged a decade in the frantic minutes it took to free her. Arina opened eyes filled with panic as she gripped his forearm, looking around wildly.
“Don’t speak,” he warned, pocketing the cord. “Just breathe.”
“You,” she rasped, the word an accusation. Did she truly believe he’d order her dead only to revive her? It would have been all too easy to slit her throat while she laid there and blame it on someone else. Eris shifted, spreading his legs a little wider as Arina pushed herself from his lap only to collapse between his thighs, palms flat on the marble floor.
“What did you do to make someone so vengeful?” Eris asked, more curious than anything. That was twice now—surely it wasn’t a jilted courtier coming after her. There was something deeply personal about this second attack, though Eris couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Poisoning was detached, removed from the person being killed but strangling seemed intimate. Angry, even.
Arina didn’t answer, turning those too-big eyes on him. “Is there a bruise?”
Eris clenched his jaw. “Yes.”
“I think I’d like to be alone,” Arina whispered, pushing herself off the floor like she’d practiced this before. Eris recognized what was happening—the way she set her jaw, swallowing the urge to cry so she could look at him with blank, dead eyes. No emotion, just a numb sort of detachment he’d perfected himself. For a moment he remained exactly where he was, his mind unable to process what was happening.
And then he stood. “You need a guard.”
“I want to be alone,” she repeated, her voice whisper soft. “Thank you for this.”
It wasn’t good enough. Eris hated her dismissal even more. “Tell me who did this.”
“I don’t know,” she said, refusing to look at him.
“I’ll—”
“Eris, she whispered, twisting her fingers nervously in front of her body. “Please.”
Growling in frustration, Eris stalked from the room unsure what he wanted to do. He heard the lock click behind him, shutting him out definitively. Fine. She didn’t want his help then he wouldn’t offer it.
But all night, all Eris could see when he closed his eyes was Arina lifeless on the floor in a heap, her face hidden beneath all that soft hair. His mind forced him to replay her wrapping those long fingers around her throat, feeling for the dark bruise already forming against her skin as the light winked out of her gaze.
It wasn’t the first time someone had hurt her that way.
But Eris swore it would be the last.

Using it as an excuse to draw the autumn family picture. I know with this many sons it can be difficult to tell who's who especially with all the names that they definitely have. I put a handy guide on who's who under cut to avoid confusion :)

Az woke to his shadows hissing in his ear. He tried to ignore them. Then they started physically nudging him. With a groaning sigh he buried his face in his pillow.
Our mate will not listen.
He will not come to bed.
That got his attention.
He lifted his head, blinking as he focused in the darkness. Beside him you were sleeping, facing away from him, his wing draped over you. He glanced further and realized the other side of the bed was indeed empty.
He needs rest.
“I’m going,” he whispered.
He used them to move off the bed silently so you wouldn’t wake. He stood by the bed and rubbed his eyes before following the shadows clearly showing him where to go. A light coming from his study was obvious in the dead of night. When Az came to the door, he watched shadows flurry around Eris. Eris was hunched over papers, waving his hand half heartedly to shoo them.
“They’ll stop if you come to bed,” Az said, his voice rougher from just waking up.
Eris’s head snapped up. His eyes meet Az’s then drop down his body.
“Put some pants on. You’re indecent.”
Az glanced down at himself. He was indeed nude. He forgot he hadn’t put pants on, so focused on getting the shadows to leave him alone.
“It’s the dead of night. If anyone besides us is in these chambers at this hour, they deserve what they get.” He crossed his arms. “It’s late. Come to bed.”
Eris propped his elbow on his desk and rubbed his eye. “I’m almost done reviewing these reports. I’ll come to bed in a few minutes.”
“You said that when you sent us to bed hours ago.” His shadows agreed. Hissing that Eris was a liar. “Whatever it is can wait.”
“No, it can’t,” he snapped. He paused immediately and took a breath. “What I mean is that these reports are important to the trade agreement. I have to make sure I don’t miss anything.”
“You have advisors for that. You have me for that.” Shadows hissed at him again. “My shadows aren’t going to let you stay up. So you can come willingly or I can come over there and force you.”
Eris leaned his elbows on the desk and started rubbing his temples. The shadows told Az to just be done with it and pick him up. His chuckle had Eris sighing loudly.
“Fine. But just so you know, I used to stay up all night doing this and I was fine.”
“You’re not three hundred years old anymore, Eris.”
“Neither are you,” he grumbled.
Az watched him straighten up his desk, tucking away reports while shadows kept a sharp eye on him. Once everything was sorted and he couldn’t stall longer, Eris brushed back his hair and sighed. Az tucked his wings in and stepped back into the corridor as Eris finally came out of the study.
“Don’t trust me to follow you,” he asked Az, a tired smirk gracing his lips.
“You know I don’t.”
When they both snuck back into the bedroom, his shadows allowed him to slip back into bed with ease. They didn’t provide Eris that same courtesy after he shed his own clothes. As soon as the bed moved, Az felt you move.
“Hmm?” Your sleepy hum came out like a whisper.
“It’s just me, love. Go back to sleep,” Eris whispered back.
You didn’t listen. You sat up on your elbows and Az did his best not to laugh.
“Er? What time is it?”
“Time for you to go back to sleep. Come here.”
You mumbled something even Az couldn’t understand but moved over to Eris. Az didn’t complain. That gave him more room to spread out his wings, scooting himself over as well to drape one over you and Eris. With his shadows settled he easily went back to sleep.
Az woke in the morning and Eris was already gone from bed.
Our mate is stubborn, the shadows whispered.
He was but there wasn’t much Az could do about it at that moment. What he could do is scoot closer to you and your end of the bed. A soft grumble escaped your lips when he wrapped his arm around you and draped his leg over yours.
“Morning,” Azriel buried his face in your hair. You groaned back. That made him chuckle. “We should take the puppies for a walk today.”
That woke you up. You inhaled sharply and let out a sigh as you rolled over in his arms.
“What time is it?” You reached up and rubbed one of your eyes.
“Past time to get up,” Az grinned.
You moved out of his grasp and sat up. He tried to not let his mind wander as he watched the blanket fall, your bare chest exposed to the chill air. He focused on how your hair stuck up at odd angles instead.
“Did Eris even come to bed last night?” You frowned.
He laughed. “You don’t remember? He woke you up.”
You scrunched up your face and made a noise. “It’s a free day, is he seriously working?”
You stretched your arms to the sky and Azriel’s gaze fell right back to your breasts. You yawned again, and dropped your arms, slumping forward.
“I can smell you,” you turned your head and sharply glared at him. “Are you ever not horny?”
“With you it’s hard not to be.”
He brushed the back of his fingers against your arm. For a moment you looked as if you’d take the bait, but you sighed again and threw back the covers.
“Let’s get dressed and go drag Eris for a walk,” you said getting off the bed.
His shadows agreed with him and nudged at him to get out of bed as well. Resigned, he rolled out of bed and stretched his wings. You both dressed, Az in his normal leather pants, dark blue top, and his boots; you in flowy brown trousers and deep rust blouse under a gold stay with your own leather boots.
“Where is he?”
Az turned to you, his expression asking the question for him. The shadows knew what you meant. One curled up by his ear and whispered Eris was in the High Lord’s office with the door locked. Azriel frowned.
“Office. We have to winnow in.”
The way sadness washed over you and poured into the bond- he knew you knew the door was locked and what that meant.
“It’s getting bad again, isn’t it?” You whispered. You came up and took his hand. Your fingers rubbed along Az’s own.
“Not like last time. He’s just a little overworked.”
A little was probably an understatement. Eris went through waves; he would balance his work and personal life, and slowly start to unbalance it. Azriel was used to it when it was just him. The first time it happened with you as part of the family, however- Azriel’s free hand twitched at the memory.
It was the only fight the three of you had since you’d been together. It got very ugly. Since then it’s happened three more times but you all managed to work through it. It didn’t stop you from immediately going back to that first one, remembering how bad it was. He and Eris would regret that for the rest of their lives.
“Come on baby, we will get him to go with us. He just needs a break.”
You squeezed his hand and he shadow walked you both into Eris’s office.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Eris felt like his eyes were crossing. He’d poured over this treaty ten times noting every possible loophole and vague wording that could cause misinterpretation. He run his hand through hair, brushing back unruly red locks. He’d been working on this treaty all week and felt no closer to finishing it. His inability to focus wasn’t helped by the cloudy skies. Days like these he wanted nothing more than to say in bed.
He looked over at the stack of reports he poured over until Azriel forced him to bed. He reached over and grabbed them while frustratation welled in him. There could have been something he missed. If Az and his shadows had simply left him alone, he would be done by now. Azriel never understood the pressure he was under.
After all this time, his father’s legacy still haunted him. They were still finding old laws set by Beron, missed during the reviews in the first years of Eris’s reign. He still felt the need to ensure Autumn subjects he was just and fair. And despite both of his mates’ skills, he was not going to burden them with it. As if summoned, the room darkened in front of his desk. It took all his might to not groan in annoyance when you and Azriel appeared in front of him.
“Yes, loves?” He put on an air of indifference and shoved down the other feelings.
You walked around his desk and stopped by his chair.
“We are going for a walk. The three of us.” You put your hands on your hips.
“I’m busy, my love. Go on without me.”
You scowled at him. “No. It’s a free day; the end of the week. We are taking the puppies for a walk and you’re going with us.”
“I don’t have time-“
“You’re making time.”
He cut his eyes to you as his anger burned in his gut because you cut him off but you didn’t falter. He felt the coolness of a shadow wrapped around his wrist, urging him to calm down. He glanced to Az who was stanced as if he was ready to grab you up if Eris lost it. That alone dampened any anger in him. He sighed and ran his hand through his hair again.
“Where exactly are we taking our puppies, my stubborn fire?”
Eris hated how you and Azriel both visibly relaxed. Sometimes he felt like he didn’t deserve you both, especially when you had to weather his anger. But you smiled at him with genuine affection and he shoved those thoughts away.
“The mum field.” You held out your hand. “Let’s go.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The second that the three of you winnowed into the kennels, the puppies started to bark. The other hounds were trained by Eris himself. The puppies were still learning; training with a handler daily. It took one whistle from Eris to get them to silence and sit at attention.
His prized smoke hounds sat behind the fenced wall, their sleek gray fur gleaming under the natural light of the windows. Of course when you approached the door, the new litter began to thump their tails despite not being commanded to be at ease.
“Have you been coming out here on your own?” Eris side-eyed you.
“No.”
Your tone and the way you ducked your head and that told him everything he needed to know. Azriel of course snickered.
What was he going to do with you?
“These dogs are not house pets, Y/N.”
You sighed, unlatching the door. “They’re just puppies, Eris. You come and play with the others all the time.”
Play was a subjective term. He ran exercises with his hounds once a week. He did dote on them; he wasn’t a monster to withhold affection. New litters needed balance in order to retain training in their later years. He couldn’t stay mad, however. Not when you opened the door and he clicked twice for all of them to go at ease. The squeal of laughter you made when the puppies and other hounds ran up to you when you entered the kennel was worth it.
He and Azriel walked in, Az shutting the door behind him, as the hounds gathered around for attention. It was surprising how quickly they took to you and Az; though he was certain they could tell what you were to him. Eris in particular zoned in on Jora, mother to the current litter of pups.
“Hi, sweet girl,” he whispered. He knelt down, scratching her behind her floppy ear as she tried to lick at him. “Do you want to go for a walk with us?”
The hounds heard the word walk and immediately all of them became excited. Eris kissed Jora’s forehead and stood up, snapping his fingers. All silenced their yelping and stood still on all fours, tails still wagging. He ushered his mates out and with another signal, had the hounds follow behind them.
Leaving the kennels and walking along the trail had to be a sight to see. You jogged ahead a little ways, the litter of pups chasing after you and stumbling some on their feet. Azriel laughed each time a pup took a small tumble. Eris suppressed his own. He and Az walked side by side a bit behind you, the hounds in a formal line behind them as they were trained to do. Jora was allowed to walk beside him to keep an eye on her pups.
It was still cloudy when you reached the field.
The next few hours were spent in the meadow. Azriel eventually fell asleep lying on his stomach, wings spread out and warming under the sun once the clouds parted. Eris watched you play with the pups until you tired, shadows taking over and running all the hounds in circles using the shadows in the flowers and grass. Eris propped himself against a tree at the edge of the meadow.
You had come and sat in front of Eris, between his stretched out legs. You rested back against his chest and he wrapped his arms around you. He couldn’t remember the last time he sat with you like this. It was nice, the two of you sitting in silence together.
“Should we wake him?” You nodded your head to Az.
“Probably,” he mused and rested his chin on your shoulder. “He’s quite the baby when his wings get sunburned.”
You hummed, amusement in your tone. “Thank you,” you whispered. You put your hand over where his rested on your waist. “For coming with us.”
“Thank you for making me,” he pressed a kiss to your cheek.
“You know we can help you. We don’t mind.” You turned your head and gave him a smirk. “I was one of the best emissaries before you stole me away.”
“It’s not stealing when you're willing.”
“Thesan disagrees.”
Thesan did in fact hold a slight grudge against Eris after the bond snapped. Not that he didn’t understand. You were damn good at what you did. Also why he offered you a reprieve after the mating ceremony. In that moment, Eris could see how he was being hypocritical. He offered you a break but never took one of his own. He didn’t further examine that thought- lest he ruin the moment the two of you were sharing. Instead he watched the hounds, including the pups, wander over to your area of the field and seek shade under the trees.
“We should wake Azriel.” He said. “Even the pups are tired.”
He looked over and tugged on the bond to Az. Azriel grumbled. You must have tugged as well, as he turned his head away from you both. When he didn’t get up, you shifted in Eris’s lap and gave him a wicked grin.
“What’s the signal for a playful attack?”
Eris grinned back. He let out a long whistle, alerting the hounds. Then he snapped his fingers and pointed at Azriel. Three of the closest hounds: Lo, Thebe, and Klaus, ran over to Azriel and immediately started to lick at his face. You erupted with laughter and Az jolted awake.
“What the fuck,” Az, shooed at the hounds but the were not deterred. “Okay I’m up, call them back.”
Eris whistled again and the hounds came bounding over.
“Good boy,” he scratched at Klaus’s ear, while you gave Lo and Thebe loving pets as well.
Az sat up in the field, and stretched both his arms and wings. He let out a yawn before getting up and walking over to the shade.
“Was that necessary?” He scowled, hands on his hips.
“Yes,” you replied. “You would get burned if you didn’t get up.”
”We both know what a baby you are when that happens,” Eris added.
Az sat down and made a gesture Eris was certain was vulgar in Illyria. Now that he was in the shade, his shadows came out. Two slithered around the sunlight shining through the trees and came around you and Eris. One went to his wrist, the other in your hair and both rested contently. The three of you sat in silence, before Azriel brought up some courtier gossip. You excitedly explained what you had heard on the same topic.
Eris sat there and listened, and anuncomfortable feeling sank into his chest. When was the last time he sat and listened to his mates? Even just to hear idle gossip about a court member he didn’t recognize. His mind kept spiraling. When was the last time he had dinner with the two of you? He had no idea what you both did with your time. Last night was the first time in weeks he’d been in bed and held you. The shadow tightened on his wrist and you turned in his lap, moving back to rest on your knees between his legs.
“Eris?” You and Azriel both were staring at him. “Where did you go?”
If Eris was capable of crying he would have. You and those eyes, searching him to see what past horrors were triggered when the truth was it was he who was the horror.
“No where,” he whispered. “I simply realized what a terrible mate I am.”
Something hit him in the head. He looked down to see an acorn rolling in the grass. He looked up to see Azriel glaring.
“Did you just hit me with an acorn?” Eris was truthfully too dumbfounded to do anything but gap at his mate.
“I’d punch you if Y/N wasn’t in the way.”
At that Eris heard Jora growl but not get up from where she laid with her pups. She recognized the empty threat, the smart hound she was. But she still didn’t like Az smarting off at him.
“Az-“ you tried to interject.
“No.” He jumped to his feet, wings flaring to balance him. “I'm not going to sit and listen to Eris feel sorry for himself.” His gaze turned to Eris. “You need a break. A real one.”
Eris remained silent. You had sat back on the grass, arms around your knees. He could feel sadness in your side of the bond. He locked his side down- he didn’t want to further your discomfort.
“He’s right Ere,” you said so softly he almost didn’t hear it over the breeze. “You’re slipping away from us again.”
That hurt him more than any physical blow he had endured. Now he really could cry. Why was he cursed? He didn’t deserve you or Azriel. And he was doing it again- burying himself in work and ignoring the two of you. He was a terrible husband and mate. He was so lost in his own thoughts, he startled when you moved up to him and put your hand on his cheek.
“We cannot help you if you don’t let us.” You said softly. “I know you’re set in your ways and think you have to do everything alone. But you don’t.”
“Do what you have to do tomorrow.” Az said. He could see him cross his arms, shadows still agitated but not as much. “Then we will spend three days together. Not working.”
“That caldron damned treaty is not going to be done by tomorrow.” Eris grumbled.
“And it won’t be done by the end of next week, either.” You pulled your hand back and missed your touch already. “Your governors still have to sign it before it even goes out to the other courts.”
“I hate when you're right.” He didn’t suppress the small smile forming on his lips. “Fine. I will finish it up tomorrow and we will take three days to ourselves.” You grinned, Azriel stood there smug. “Let me guess, you two have something planned?”
Your grin became wicked. “Maybe.”
That stirred something in him but he suppressed it. He huffed and rose to his feet, dusting off his pants. The hounds watched him, knowing he would signal them to do the same in a moment. You stood as well.
“Let’s go back,” he pointed between you and Azriel. “And you two can explain to me this plan of yours.”
“Deal.” Az smirked.
Eris tried to not roll his eyes at his mate. He gave the alert and all the hounds rose to their feet. Except for the pups. Eris signaled again and two of them whined but didn’t rise.
“Poor babies,” you cooed. You picked one up and placed them on your shoulder. The pup didn’t even wake. “So sleepy.”
“You’re spoiling them.” Eris scowled.
“They’re just babies,” Azriel retorted, picking up another and placing them on his shoulder. “It won’t hurt to carry them.”
Eris realized he wasn’t winning this battle. Azriel grabbed another to put over his other shoulder and with an exaggerated sigh, Eris picked up the last one. He refused to admit it was adorable how the puppy in his arm snuggled against his neck, no doubt loving the warmth he radiated. Jora watched them, head moving between the three of them to make sure her babies were fine. Eris knelt down and scratched her ear.
“It’s okay girl,” he said. He gave another signal for the hounds to follow. “Come on. Let’s go home.”

Coronation Day (Eris Vanserra x Reader)
Tumblr media
Eris Week Day Two: High Lord
Summary// The day of Eris's coronation is finally here and while everyone is getting ready you realize your mate is nowhere to be found. After searching everywhere you finally find him in the gardens and you see a side of him that he rarely ever shows.
(I’m sorry that these are so short but I hope you guys are still liking them! This fic was one of my favorites to write and I think it’s just the detail and imagery that really ties it in. I also love writing about vulnerable Eris so it has definitely been fun for me! <3 Thank you guys for reading!)
(I also had pictured what the dress, crown, and shoes looked like so here are the references but of course I want you all to picture what you like! It is you, after all :))
Your Dress / Crown / Shoes / Eris's Outfit (but gold instead of silver) / Garden Gates
(Also I listened to Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift while writing!)

WARNINGS: None
You look up at the grand clock as the seamstress puts the final touches on your gown, your stomach in knots as you look over yourself in the mirror. It was Eris’s coronation day and everything had to be perfect, including you. The gown was exquisite, the exact dress you would expect from a High Lord’s mate, and your hair and makeup enhanced your entire aura into royalty.
The gown was the color of golden leaves with large sleeves and beaded foliage around the top to pay homage to your court. It swept the floor and had a grand trail, almost like a wedding dress, while the crown that was atop your head matched perfectly to Eris’s.
“There, my lady, you are perfect.” The seamstress beamed in the mirror as she stepped back, taking in the entire outfit as you matched her smile with your own. “I have never seen a more beautiful and deserving woman to be our Lady of Autumn than you.”
“You are too kind, Cressida.” You blush, stepping off the pedestal and testing out your specially made-heels. “All this beauty is truly owed to you. I was but a blank canvas to your brilliant mind.”
“Now it is you who is being too kind, my lady.” She bows while she gathers her things and walks towards the door. “I will see you at the coronation!”
“I’ll be the one on the throne!” You laugh, waving to her before turning to your handmaidens with a nervous sigh. They all gush over your outfit, their voices intermingling into a crescendo before you shush them. “Have you heard from Eris?”
“Well…about that…” Luci begins, her mouth twisting down as she looks to the others who immediately look to the ground.
“What? What is wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong, my lady, it’s just-” Luci tries to explain before Nikolet steps forward, finally caving.
“No one has seen him since this morning!” She confessed, her hands wringing together in front of her. “He was getting ready and when the seamstress came to check on everything he had vanished. They didn’t want to tell you since you were also in the middle of-”
“They didn’t want to tell me that my mate was missing…on his coronation day?!” You raise an eyebrow, trying to control your anger as the girls sheepishly nod. You pinch the bridge of your nose and take a deep breath, shaking your head. “I will go find him, just finish getting ready.”
“But my lady-” Luci tries to interject but you hold out a hand, silencing her.
“He is my mate. Wherever he has run off to and why he has run off is nobody’s business but our own. Now please, get ready. I will see you all there.” You urge, shooing them, before picking up your skirts and walking out the door.
The castle is bustling with activity while you try to find him. People were running around making sure everything was in its place, that the flowers were set and the food was prepared. You try to look neutral as you pass everyone, barely acknowledging their bows and awes of beauty as you search everywhere. You weaved and waded through the crowds of fellow court members, peeking through the doors of rooms and studies until you stopped at the grand entrance doors.
Where on Earth could he be?
You bite your lip, looking side to side, before you catch a glimpse of sunlight coming in from the window above. As you turn to see its path, noting how it hits the painting of the garden so beautifully, you get an idea.
The pace of your steps picks up as you hold your skirts tightly and all but run through the kitchen, apologizing to the staff as you almost run into the cake. They shout out, wondering where you are off to in such a hurry, but you ignore them as you push through the back doors and glide down the outdoor steps.
Leaves rustle above you as the autumn air greets you like a lover, wrapping around your bare shoulders in a soft caress while your heels click against the cobblestone walkway. The trees grow thicker as you make your way to the very back of the estate, to your and Eris’s small garden of Eden.
Tall stone walls and oak trees guard it from prying eyes, secluding it for everyone except the two of you as you slow your pace and walk through the iron gate. Autumn leaves cover most of the pathway leading to the small bench at the back of the garden where you spot Eris with his head in his hands, the tree above rustling and whispering things you think only he can hear.
“Eris?” You say softly, smiling softly when he raises his head to look at you. He looks beautiful in his dark red suit, golden embellishments lining the wrists and collar, with a white shirt and dark pants to match. His hair was styled neatly, as always, but what stood out to you the most was his pained, troubled eyes. “Oh, Eris.”
“You look beautiful, Y/N,” He says, watching as you walk over to him and crouch in front of him. Your dress rustles against the ground but you don’t pay any attention, all of your focus is on him. “A true Lady of Autumn.”
“What’s wrong, love?” You ask, grasping his hands in yours. “Cold feet already?”
He gives you a small smile and your heart flips. “You could say that…though it is very hard for me to get cold.” Eris chuckles though his voice falls flat at the end as he looks down, frowning. “What if I can’t do this? What if I can’t lead an entire court?”
“You can do this. If anyone can, you can, Eris.” You squeeze his hands tightly, bending down until you catch his gaze. “I have never had as much confidence in anyone leading as I do with you. This court has been through so much and you are going to bring it back to life.”
“This court has been through so much because of my father,” He scowled, standing abruptly while you sighed and stood with him. He began to pace back and forth as he continued his rant. “My father almost ruined this court and I know what the people think of him…what they probably think of me. I am my father’s son and what if, what if I become him? What if that is my destiny?”
The air stood still as he stopped in his tracks, looking at you with fear and sadness and doubt and vulnerability. You had only seen him like this once before when your mating bond had snapped. He hated to show weakness, especially when it came to his family, and your heart broke at his confession.
“What if I am no better than my father? A monster’s prodigy?”
You walk to him slowly and cup his face, caressing his cheek with your thumb as you pull him towards you and wrap your arms around his neck. Eris immediately crumbles at your touch and pulls you as close as he can, burying his face in your neck as your hands run down his back soothingly.
Something wet falls against your shoulder but you don’t draw attention to it nor to the shuddering of his shoulders. You just hold him as tight as you can while you whisper your truth into his ear.
“Eris Vanserra, I want you to listen to me.” You begin gently. “You are more than your father’s legacy. You are the creator of your own story, the holder of the pen, and right now is the first chapter of it. You have more kindness, bravery, and leadership in your pinky finger than your father ever had.”
His shoulder slowly came to a stop as you continued, pulling back so that you could press your forehead against his and look into his eyes. “My love, I wish you could see yourself as I see you. Because do you know what I see?” You ask, placing a finger under his chin when he tries to look away. “I see a man who is brilliant. A man who is loyal to his court and saved them from war. A man who may hide behind a mask but cares more than he cares to admit.”
“I see my mate, my handsome soon-to-be High Lord.” You smile, kissing his cheek. “The mere fact that you are afraid tells me, tells everyone, just how worthy you will be for this crown. You will do amazing things for this court, for all of Pyrthian. I have never had more confidence in anything in my life.”
“Y/N…” Eris trails off, lost for words, but you shush him with a finger to his lips.
“And if you happen to falter just remember I will be right by your side ready to set you straight.” You grin, giggling when he nods in agreement. “But seriously, you are going to be a wonderful High Lord.”
Eris takes a deep breath and whispers, “Have I ever told you how lucky I am to have been given you?”
“You could do to remind me more often…” You trail off teasingly. “Perhaps tonight after your coronation?”
He smirked and tried to give you a kiss but you cheekily turn at the last second, letting his lips land on your cheek and smiling when he let out a huff of frustration. You grab his hand and begin to walk out of the garden, turning back to him and saying, “Now, now, High Lord, we mustn’t keep everyone waiting. Come, let’s start this journey together.”
The two of you walk back into the Forest House, smiling and laughing, while everyone looks on in confusion. You arrive quickly at the doors of the grand hall where you can hear everyone talking, wondering what was taking so long. The advisors look worn out as they get in their places, just glad that Eris has been found, while you turn to look at him adoringly.
“Ready?” You ask.
Rays of sun shone through the windows again, catching him in just the right light to give him an ethereal glow that highlighted his amber eyes and cheekbones. “As long as you are by my side.”
“Always.” You promise, kissing him tenderly before pulling away as the doors open. “Let’s go get your crown.”
As the doors open the applause nearly deafens you, everyone cheering and smiling as the two of you walk into the room and down the aisle. At the end sits two thrones of equal size, both of your crowns sitting on the cushions as you walk hand in hand towards your destiny.

no but something that i’ve been thinking is that elain and lucian give off more persephone and hades vibes than azriel and her.
before you roll your eyes listen out why—
ok so we all relate hades to azriel because of the shadows, but he has absolutely no hades personality. in every myth hades is intelligent and calculating like a certain redhead. also he is super respectful towards his wife (in greek mythology world he is technically the best husband so don’t come for me 💀) and yk who else is super respectful towards his mate? lucian.
i might be super wrong but what inspired this thinking was this gorgeous art by @itswibell-art
