Summary:

When Bucky had asked if Sam minded if he took the lead on his special day because he wanted everything to be a surprise, Sam had been, well, surprised. No, they hadn’t been together on Bucky’s birthday, but Sam had insisted they hang out, and the whole thing was like pulling teeth — not the hanging out part, but the celebrating Bucky’s birthday part. So, yeah, Sam was definitely a little surprised by Bucky’s offer, but he had readily agreed. Birthdays were pretty much tailor made for surprises, and Sam wasn’t any more immune to enjoying them than anyone else.

Or: Sam just wants to have a good birthday, Bucky just wants to give Sam, well, everything, and Sarah just wants Bucky to get it together.

“Hey,” whispered Bucky as his hand met Sam’s, “Hey, I’m here.” Sam opened his eyes; he squinted blearily into the dim light of their reading lamps on. Above him, was Bucky. Loving, intense eyes. A soft, easy smile. Bucky sat on the bed with a bed tray in hand. With something on it, the smells of fresh coffee and something more on that tray. “You spill that, I kill you,” croaked Sam, “My grandmother’s quilt is on this bed.” Bucky snorted as he leaned down and gave Sam a soft kiss. “Love you too,” whispered Bucky, “Good morning.” “Morning,” mumbled Sam, wanting a little more from that slow, casual kiss.

Happy 10th year of me doing this dorky comic! Hope people don't mind the fact that I haven't really dabbled in Cap stuff for a few years, except for my weird yearly July 4th ritual. “Long day at work?” asked Bucky, and Sam wobbled his head. “Sort of. Nothing too busy. A lot of school visits, which are always fun,” said Sam, his smile softer, “A lot of gyms full of children singing happy birthday to me on an off-key.” “That’s wonderful,” breathed Bucky, because Bucky was so utterly in love with this man that it was probably written on his face. How he got lost in that gap-toothed smile of Sam’s.
