Hi! Can I request how the Slashers will react to their favorite nurse having an engagement ring on her? And they actually fell in love with her. (Also, can you add Five please 🥲, he's very much my comfort character.)
Five Hargreeves :
Tumblr media
Five was the first to know.
He knew just by looking at you. The way you almost glowed and were smiling from ear to ear all week made him suspicious. And then, the coup de grace…The ring. He was sitting at his own private bar when you joined him and his eyes were immediately drawn to the shiny ring. Suddenly, everything clicked and he stared at the drink in his hand…his hand shaking slightly.
"…So, you found someone ?"
He was happy for you, or at least he tried to convince himself he was.
He wished you would say no. He wished you would realise how much you meant to him at that exact moment…but you didn’t.
Your smile almost burnt him when you answered affirmatively. He took a big gulp of his whiskey—savouring the burn. He knew it was impossible. You were a nurse. And he was…just a kid. You would have never seen him as anything else. And it made him rage against himself for even entertaining the idea you would ever consider a future with him. Physically, he was too young. And mentally ? He was too old…You would have never worked.
So, he smiled and raised his glass to you.
"Congratulations, Y/N. You deserve it."
Once you were out of the room, that glass went flying across the room to end up shattered against a wall…shattered like Five was.
Jack Torrance :
Tumblr media
Jack is good at hiding his emotions—even from himself. He had spent weeks wondering if he should ask you out on a date. He had spent his time thinking and planning and rehearsing what he would say and do. He thought it would be his moment to shine and leave all the bad shit behind…But then, he saw the ring.
"Hey. That’s a…That’s a nice ring you got there."
He smiled and said he was happy for you. And you believed it. Of course you did. Because, he was a good comedian. The best. He had learnt to just drown his emotions when he died, because if he was to feel anything…He’d lose himself. He had to suffer the loss of his family, his career, his life…What was one more loss to the lot ?
However, once you were out of the room ? He lowered his glass and his shoulders shook as he gripped the glass tightly in his hand to breaking point…He was too late. Again.
"Damn it…"
That was Jack’s true reaction to the news. He was disappointed for sure. He knew he should have acted before…But, what was the point ?
What would you have done with the ghost of a past long forgotten ?
He just started drinking again and chuckled bitterly at his own misery. He had wished for a better end, but that end had just slipped through his fingers like a dream…He would maybe write about it later ? But, what was the point ? He could write his feelings, but you’d never read them.
Pennywise :
Tumblr media
You were at the dinner table and when Pennywise sat in front of you, he could feel that something was different. The other slashers were strangely quiet, so of course he’d have to ask.
"Why is everyone so quiet ?! Please. Tell me someone died !" He snickered, but nobody answered. Finally, he looked at you and tried to find the reason for the sudden silence…You then showed him your ring.
"Pennywise. I am engaged.", you announced with a smile. His own smile dropped.
He knew perfectly well what engagement meant. He understood now why all the others were so quiet. He could read their emotions. All of them were disappointed…He just didn’t know why until you had shown the ring…
"…Congrats."
"…Thanks."
That was the most awkward congratulations you had ever heard. He glanced back at your hand. Even though he had tried to sound genuine, he couldn’t bring himself to smile again. It was the first time you had seen Pennywise so serious.
He then decided to avoid you. You didn’t understand why, but he simply vanished. He didn’t even show up at meals anymore…
When something upsets Pennywise, he tends to avoid it. So, he decided to avoid you. He knew it was a childish and nonsensical reaction to the news…But, he couldn’t being himself to care. Because, he understood perfectly the feelings of the other slashers.
He never thought he would have to deal with emotions again…But, it seemed like he was wrong.
Michael Myers :
Tumblr media
Michael stayed silent. He had nothing to say…
Well, he normally doesn’t say much, but this time you could actually feel the awkwardness in the room. He knew he didn’t have the right to dream…but, he still did. You were the only one who truly understood him and that Myers had ever spared. He wanted you to love him. But, it didn’t matter at the end…
He wrote down on his notebook:
Congratulations.
Even you could feel that he didn’t mean it, but you didn’t comment on it. However, he didn’t expect it when you removed his mask and stared at his face—studying his features. He wasn’t smiling. His teeth were clenched and his eyes were dark.
"…Michael.", you muttered softly and raised your hand to stroke his cheek…but he grabbed it before you could.
"Don’t."
He could see the pity in your eyes and it hurt more than anything. He then retrieved his mask and walked away. He couldn’t pretend to be happy about the news. And now, you knew about his feelings too.
Bo Sinclair :
Tumblr media
Bo was working on a car when he asked you to hand him a tool. When you did, his eyes caught the ring around your finger and he suddenly forgot all about the tool. He grabbed your arm and stared at the offensive jewel in frightening silence.
"…Bo ?", you called him after a while.
When he saw you with that ring, it made him tick and realise that you had a life outside of the hospital—one he had no idea about. And it made him mad. You had never seen him so quiet before and he didn’t answer. He finally released your arm and left without a word. After that, you had trouble catching him and when you eventually did ? His reaction wasn’t the one you expected.
"…Whatya want from me, Y/N ?! A congrats and pat on the fuckin’ back ?! Alright. Congrats ! And hope you have a great life with yer fucker !"
He took out his frustration on you. Bo usually handles his emotions with his fists and his words. But, of course he wouldn’t come to hands with you. So, he’d either ignore you or be harsh with his words. Or, he’d go out to a bar and start a fight. Anything but confront you about his feelings and confess that he was jealous.
Jason Voorhees :
Tumblr media
Jason was angry. The moment he saw the ring on your finger, he knew what it meant. His mother had carried hers for years and he had inherited it. He thought you’d be the one carrying his ring, but it seemed he had waited too long. His reaction would first be denial before he would suddenly break everything in his path and try to start a fight with anyone he’d come across. Jason doesn’t handle emotions very well and most often than not, he’d break things in order to let his frustration out.
He spent hours in the forest chopping wood and no one dared come to check on him—except you.
"Jason…?"
He didn’t answer, but he was there. You could hear him breathing and you sighed before sitting on a log. You waited for him and soon enough, he sat down next to you and you noticed how his whole body seemed tense.
"Jason…It’s not because I am engaged that I will forget about you, you know that right ?"
He still didn’t answer. He was doing his best to remain calm and when you moved to touch his shoulder—he recoiled from your touch. It was the first time Jason was reacting this way with you. And what he did next made your eyes widen in shock. He retrieved his mother’s ring from his pocket and wordless put it in your hand.
By the time you understood what he meant to say, he was already gone.
Freddy Krueger :
Tumblr media
"~How sweet…"
He gave you the best fake smile he could muster before turning around and leaving. Truth is ? Freddy was the less angry out of all the slashers. He doesn’t believe in marriage or engagement or anything…The only problem he had with you being engaged was that he had lost his chance getting into your pants. Or, that’s the reason he’d give to anyone who would ask. Because of course you’d be faithful. You were the only person in the hospital who ever gave a shit about him.
You were kind and honest and fuckin’ perfect. So, of course Freddy didn’t stand a chance in hell. You were the complete opposite of him. You were an angel and Freddy was a demon. And that made him love you and hate you even more. It hurt…But, it didn’t matter. Because, he was already broken to begin with.
Norman Bates :
Tumblr media
He thought he had a chance, but the moment he saw the ring…something snapped in Norman. It started with a twitch of his jaw and suddenly, his smile was gone. There was nothing left in his gaze than an intense emptiness—a void which seemed to swallow you whole. He took a step forward and for the first time…You were scared of him.
There was something murderous in his eyes—something dark.
When he leant forward, your heart hammered in your chest, but he simply smiled knowingly before kissing your cheek.
"Congratulations, my little angel."
There was not a single word in that sentence that he truly meant, and you both knew it all too well. But, you smiled and tried to hold back the tears. You left and Norman was left with his regrets.
Penny :
Tumblr media
"Why ?"
You turned around to face Penny. He was the last one. He didn’t understand, but his expression changed to cold numbness as he repeated.
"Why, Y/N ? You know how we all feel about you…That ring. You knew what that ring would do to us…So, why ? Why hurt us like this ?"
You had always suspected Penny to be smarter than he pretended to be…but you didn’t think he would be the first one to figure it out. Your expression softened as you tried not to cry.
"I’m sorry, Penny. Turns out I wasn’t as special as you all thought I was…"
It was simpler this way…It was better than to admit that you were scared. You thought you were past the fear…but, it seemed not. There was still a fear to be conquered. You had grown too attached to the slashers. And of course you knew how they felt about you, but so did you. You felt so strongly…but, you couldn’t do anything about it.
You were human. And you still had a life outside of the hospital. They couldn’t understand…but, you hoped that with time they’d understand. You only had one life, and you couldn’t give them false hope. You couldn’t be with them forever, and that ring was a reminder. Not only for them, but for you as well.
Penny snarled and grabbed the hand where the ring was to glare at it. He hated it. He didn’t want to see you belonging to someone else than him…It affected him more than he cared to admit.
Suddenly, he wrapped his hand around your ring finger and you suddenly felt a sharp pain. He released you, but then you heard a series of metallic sounds hitting the floor. When you looked down, your eyes widened as you saw your ring—shattered in pieces.
You looked back up at him, but he was gone.
The message was clear though.
He would never accept it…

Tumblr media
“Have you picked out a costume yet?” You said as you reached your arm to turn down the volume on the radio cassette. Eddie was sitting next to you on the roof of your garage. It was an autumn day, you were enjoying the sunset more than ever because of the cool air and the fragrance of the season, but mostly because of the companion you were with.
“What for, tangerine?” Eddie asks as he pulls out a cigarette from its box and lights it carefully, protecting the flame with his hand. Tangerine was one of his favorite names to call you, you haven’t told him but it was one of your favorites too.
“You are kidding right? I told you! Robin’s having a Halloween party this Friday!” You were whining a little “She’s even having a fortune teller!” You exclaim, grabbing him by his leather jacket and turning him a little towards you.
“Geez baby, I can read your fortune” He exhales the smoke putting his head back before he continues “It says you’re a nerd!” He lets out a happy grin, apparently feeling very proud of his joke and he leans back, stretching out his legs and supporting himself on his elbows to continue smoking.
You feel the heat going up your cheeks, he has never called you baby before, that was new. You could totally let him call you nerd everyday if he is going to call you baby too. You've been hiding for so long the feelings you have for him, that him just lying there on your roof looking so pretty has made you totally forget about the sunset. “Wait! What about your costume?” you asked when you noticed you didn’t even get an answer.
♡ ⋆。˚ — — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —
“I heard the houses here give out huge candy bars” Eddie chuckled as he drove to Robin’s place.  The streets leading to her house were full of kids wearing all kinds of costumes, little and big carved pumpkins everywhere you look, and almost every porch was lit up with Halloween lights. It was quite a nice neighborhood.
You finally convinced him to go as Jack Torrance from The Shining, he was wearing one of his uncle Wayne checkered shirt and his red jacket, so he was pretty much dressed as his uncle instead but with an axe twist. And since you picked his costume, naturally he has to pick yours. You were wearing a black lantern long sleeve dress, plaited right just below your breast and combat boots, he ruffled your hair, made you wear red lipstick and said you were a vampire.
“If you ever get scared, you can hold my hand, vamp” he tilts his head to the side, offering his arm for you to hold when you jump outside of his van.
“I don’t think people will get my costume, at least you have an axe” you told him, holding his arm and feeling like his girlfriend for a moment. The truth is, you thought he would pick a much scarier costume for you, but you actually feel cute in it.
“Hey you didn’t want to wear the stockings; they were the most important part!” He grinned and those little dimples appeared on his face.
You smiled and gently nudged him with your shoulder. “Shut up, butthead”.
The house was a little more crowded than you thought it would be, after all it was Robin's party but you quickly connect the dots, people spread the word that Steve Harrington was going to be there. But that didn’t stop you from having a great time at the party, Eddie ran to chase Dustin with his axe around the house the moment he saw him and Robin was the first one to compliment your costume and you told her that hers was the coolest “Thanks I stole everything from Steve” she said. After having a few drinks and sharing small talks with your classmates Eddie told you he was going outside to have a smoke and disappeared for an hour.
Not that you were not having fun anymore, but at some point, you started to miss Eddie, you rolled up your sleeve to look at your watch and saw that it was almost time to leave, so you started gazing at the crowd for a familiar bulk of hair. You saw Robin laughing her ass off with some of her friends from the band, Steve hitting on some girls and not too many feet apart, you even saw Nancy Wheeler kissing the camera boy Byers, but no sight of your friend.
“Hey, Robin, have you seen Eddie?” You asked when you approached the girl wearing the Pete Maverick costume. You took a sip of your drink as you waited for her response.
“Yeah… I think I saw him going upstairs…” She replied, you nodded and turned around to start looking again “Hey, tell him upstairs is off limits please!” You heard her yell at you when you were at the bottom of the stairs about to carefully jump over the little rope with the clear "off limits" sign hanging from it.
You didn’t find Eddie in the firsts rooms, nor in the bathroom, if he was indeed upstairs, he was going to be in the last room down the hall, so you head to the door finally sure he was going to be inside.
“Eddie? Are you ready to…”? You froze in your spot when you opened the door. You finally have found Eddie but he wasn’t alone, he was sitting in a bed and fully making out with some girl dressed as a slutty pirate. Instantly you feel nauseous and a big weight dropping at the bottom of your stomach and Eddie didn’t even notice you there until you dropped the red cup you were holding.
“Oh, Hi Vamps!” He said when he finally stepped aside from the girl’s face. “I guess… Here's someone I want you to meet…”
You slammed the door loudly when you finally regained control of your body but you stood still holding the knob on the other side unable to move again. What the fuck was that?  You felt your whole world turning upside down in what seemed like an eternity, but the truth was that everything had happened in mere seconds. “Y/N?” You let go of the door knob when you heard your name on the other side, and began to run towards the exit.
You were breaking slowly as you ran downstairs, you knew this day would come, someone would eventually notice how delightful Eddie was, how fun he was to be around, and how charming and thoughtful he can be. You just wished it would happen when you were no longer around.
You knocked down the off-limits sign when you ran towards the exit door with your head down. You were a step away when your head hit what could only be a boy's chest, you look up and with the tears about to burst blurring your vision you try to see who it is
“…” Steve Harrington was standing there holding the door knob apparently ready to leave as well. He took a look at your face and sighed as he spoke “Yeah, I couldn’t stand it anymore, either”
You ended up in Steve’s car. You know exactly how Eddie feels about him, “the rich prick who has it all” you could hear Eddie’s voice in your head.  But Steve just offered you a ride home, and you definitely are not going home in the van.
“It looks like I won’t be the only one here crying tonight, huh?” Steve said softly as an empathic smile appeared on his face. “You ok?”  he asked, frowning and tilting his head down trying to see your face.
“I… I just saw E-Eddie with…with…”  With who? Who the hell was she?
“The pirate chick? Yeah I saw them going upstairs a while ago"
A while ago? How long have they been doing that?
“I feel sick” you speak in a muted tone, covering your face with your hands.
“Yeah, I know exactly how…”
“No! I’m not figuratively speaking!” You barely managed to say those words before you opened the car door and threw up on the pavement.
“Thank you for not doing that inside” he sighed in relief while putting one hand on his chest and the other on top of the steering wheel.
You shrank in your seat and stared out the window as Steve drove to your house. He knew your address from driving Robin to your house a couple of times. You cross your arms over your chest and try really hard not to sob in front of Steve. You failed miserably. It wasn’t the first time Eddie’s attention was focused on a girl, he is a guy after all, but it was the first time you saw him with someone, and you beg to stop seeing it every time you close your eyes.
You need to let go of this unrequited love and you swear that you’ve tried, but every time he sees you with those big doe eyes, your heart skips a beat. And it’s been like that since the first time he called you sweetheart.
♡ ⋆。˚ — — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —
“Honey, It’s for you!” You hear your mom's voice downstairs and you get up from your self-pity puddle in your bed and drag your feet to your bedroom door. It's the morning after all the shit that's happened and you don't feel like talking to anyone.
“Who is it, mom?” You ask, heading downstairs. But your mom was already in the kitchen humming Girls Just Want to Have Fun as she does the shores you were supposed to be doing.
“What the hell Y/N? I was supposed to take you home last night! Where were you?” Eddie exclaims, as soon as you put the phone in your ear. You instantly tighten your hand around the handset and feel the bubbling anger going up your throat.
“You were too busy Eddie!” You spat, your voice dripping venom “Steve Harrington gave me a ride, not that it's any of your business by the way” Your head was throbbing painfully, it was too early to be having this conversation.
“That douchebag took you home?” he asks, totally ignoring the first part of what you just said. “And what the hell do you mean? Of course, you are my business, tangerine” He wasn’t mad, he was worried about you. “He didn’t pull any of his bullshit with you, didn’t he?”
“You don’t know him, Eddie!” You yelled at him, and hung up the phone.
Between the hangover and the headache, there shouldn't be room to feel guilty about snapping at him like that but how come that was the first thing you feel after hanging up.
The truth was you didn’t really know Steve either, almost throwing up in his car and a hell of an awkward ride back home was the longest interaction you'd had with him. Although he was pretty kind with you and he's probably not used to having crying girls as his co-pilot.
You spend your weekend cleaning your room, and doing chores and homework, all with a hollow feeling in your chest, and trying just to feel a little better you painted your nails your favorite color. That didn’t help as much as you wanted it to. You were still feeling frustrated and confused by what you saw, was he really that bored with you at the party?
Finally, Sunday afternoon the phone rang again.
“It’s for you again” Your mom says. “It’s the charming boy” She whispers to you perhaps a little too loudly to your liking. She hands you over the handset and when you are about to take it she quickly pulls it back to her “Say hi to your Uncle for me, will you Edward?” You can hear Eddie reply something “Thank you! … Oh? She is fine, a little grumpy… … isn’t she?”
“Mom! The phone please” You ask a little embarrassed.
“Hey” He speaks softly, his voice sounding almost apologetic.
“Hey” You murmur, not sure what to say next.
“So…Can I come over tonight?”
“…” You were a little surprised, you didn't expect to see him until tomorrow at the school where you were planning to apologize for hanging up on him.
“Y/N?”
“Sure, I miss your stupid face” You finally said with a big relieved smile on your face.
You went to the store on your bike to buy Eddie's favorite snacks anticipating he would bring a movie to watch, it was his time to choose so you were expecting a slasher. You were waiting in your bed listening to one of the many cassettes that Eddie had lent you, when you heard him knock at the front door, your mom welcomed him cheerfully and told him that you were in your room.
“I knew you would like Stevie Nicks!” He chuckled as he entered your room.
“Just this-“
“Just like the white winged dove!” He interrupted you, he was already singing and pretending the VHS on his right hand was the mic. “Sings a song, sounds like she’s singing, ooh baby, ooh said ooh! '' Eddie sang, throwing his head back and clutching his left hand to his chest. He was wearing his denim jacket, a Metallica t-shirt half tucked in a pair of blue jeans torn at one knee, a red plaid shirt tied at his waist, and his usual white reeboks.
You let out a laugh “Please continue”
“That’s the only part I know” He shrugged and grinned at you. Boy do you miss the dork. You had to resist the urge to go hug him. You didn’t want to think about it, but you figured your relationship couldn’t be the same if he was dating someone.  Was he?
“You ready?” He asks, tilting his head to the side and pointing at the VHS on his hand.
“Freddy? Again?” You complain, trying really hard not to think about last Friday. If Eddie is not going to mention it then you for sure wouldn’t either.
“Oh no sweets, this one is the second part” He told you, then got down on his knees to put the video on the VCR. “This shit is not rewound all the way!” Eddie tsked and ejected the video. “It’s not that difficult!” He mumbled to himself as he reached into his jeans pocket for the Swiss Army knife his uncle gave him for his birthday to finish rewinding the tape.
“Was Steve at the Family Video?” You asked without really thinking, you couldn't remember if you had thanked the guy for the drive when you got out of his car in tears, so over the weekend you had thought about going to the store to do it.
Eddie clenched the knife at the very mention of his name but you didn’t realize it. “Nah, it was some other guy” he answers, finally getting ready the movie.
You heard his vague reply and you climbed down from the bed and sat on the floor with your back leaning against the side of the mattress, as you were staring at Eddie you noticed that his bangs were starting to get in the way of his eyes when he's crouched down in front of the TV.
“Hey, do you want me to cut your bangs this week?” You question him when he was crawling to you to sit at your side.
“Sure thing, sweetheart. I’ll appreciate it” He looked at you over his shoulder and felt a little heat rise to his face, then he grinned when you met his eyes.
When he looks at you like that, what did he expect? To you not to fall in love? Yeah right.
♡ ⋆。˚ — — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —— — —
You went to school the next day feeling much better, Eddie had not said a word about a girl and he wasn’t at all mad at you for leaving at the party. That part was a little weird for you but you didn’t care, as long as he wasn’t dating anyone without telling you. After all, he wouldn’t do that, the boy tells you everything.
You were late for lunch at the cafeteria because you went to return a book at the library, and when you finally arrived you tighten your grip on the food tray when you looked down at the hellfire table. Your heart aches at the sight of someone sitting in your usual place right next to Eddie. It was her, the pirate chick playing around with Eddie’s hair. You hesitate whether to sit with them or not, but you only have to look around to see that you have nowhere else to sit.
“Great, now that we are all together” Eddie started to speak the moment you took a seat and left the food tray on the table. “I want to introduce you to someone, this is Rachel, I met her at Robin’s Halloween party…”
“Great party, isn’t y/n?” Dustin turned his head towards you to talk to you as Eddie continued talking to everybody. He was sitting next to you at the other end of the table.
“Yeah, great…” You answer full of bitterness as you take a bite of your suddenly super dry sandwich.  Stupid Halloween party, I didn’t even want to go in the first place.
“… she plays bass and she’s even repeating senior year too”
“Shocker” you speak under your breath, luckily Dustin is the only one that hears you.
“…anyway what I’m pathetically trying to say is…” Eddie speaks as you take a sip of your yoohoo wondering why he is suddenly acting so nervous.
“We are dating!” Rachel interrupts and puts both of her hands on top of the hand of Eddie, while showing all her perfect teeth in a big smile.
You choked with the chocolate milk and started coughing loudly trying to understand what she just said and trying to breathe again.
“You ok, tangerine?” Eddie stretches his neck trying to see as far as where you were sitting.
“Tangerine? That’s a silly name, isn’t it?” She laughed covering her mouth with one hand.
“Uh… yeah, it’s just a dumb name I came up with” Eddie teased with her.
That right there was your cue to leave.
“You are an asshole, you know that?!” You shout at him when you stand up and storm out of the cafeteria.
“Shit…” Eddie mutters when you go away. Your other friends at the table just stared at you with surprise and shared awkward glances with each other once you left.
You spend the rest of the classes zoned out and not putting attention at all to what your teachers are saying. Did you just make a scene at the cafeteria? That wasn’t a surprise for the school, coming from the hellfire table, of course, but you never thought you'd join that specific club.
After class you stayed at school to watch the band practice at the field. It was a little chilly but you figured your sweater was thick enough. You sit in the bleachers and watch from a distance as the band marches on. We are dating! her high-pitched voice echoes in your head and you feel the jealousy in your gut. Just a dumb name I came up with, you heard his voice next and just hurts. You thought you knew him better than that, why didn't he mention anything to you last night?
You put your face in your hands and sighed with exasperation.
“Alright, who am I beating up?” The familiar voice pulls you out of sinking back into the cave of sadness, you look at her through your fingers.
The girl with the band uniform was standing in front of you with her hands on her waist.
“Is he being a dipshit again?”
“A total dipshit” You mutter cleaning your face with the sleeves of your sweater. “You got time?” She nods, you sigh and begin to tell her the summon version of what happened that weekend from the party and up until this morning.
“That dingus! You don’t deserve that shit!”
“… I thought I was his best friend” You tried to smile at Robin, she smiled at you too and reached her arm to grab your hand. “You’ll be okay with time, believe me, I know”
“Thank you, Robin” You put your other hand in hers and gently pat it before letting go.
“Oh shit, Steve! Just give me a minute to change…!” She did a little jump when he saw Steve coming to the bleachers.
“C’mon Robin, we’ll be late again” He complained, and took a seat at your side, resigned to wait.
“Sorry I got a little distracted… just wait!” She turned back and began to run through the field “both of you!” you heard when she slowed down to get some breath.
Robin left you alone with Steve before you could say anything. You immediately felt a little embarrassed and shrugged your shoulders and smirked at him. “Hi, Steve”
“Hey, Y/N are you feeling better?” He gently puts his hand over your shoulder.
“Erm…” You struggle to reply “Honestly? Everything sucks right now…” You sigh “But hey… I was meaning to tell you thank you for the ride the other night, I am so sorry for making it that uncomfortable for you” You talked looking at the grass in front of you, arms crossed and shrugging in the cool autumn breeze.
“Don't worry about it, believe me I've had worse rides in my car” He answers, while rubbing the back of his neck. "Are you cold? Do you want my jacket?"  He offers it to you nonchalantly, Robin never told you how nice Steve was, maybe things would be a lot easier if you fall in love with a guy like him, but instead you longed for a guy who smells like smoke too often and sells weed to high schoolers. But also, can soothe you with one word of him and makes you feel safe and above all understood whenever you are near him.
You hesitate but finally accept the jacket. He takes it off and hands it over to you, still warm. Its scent was very different from Eddie's jacket as you can tell immediately. Steve smelled like some expensive cologne and something else that you couldn't quite tell what it was.
“It suits you” You look at him, he looks pleased and puts his hand through his hair. Hairspray, it was hairspray.
“Thank you” The two of you saw Robin rushing to get to you. You both get up and start walking towards the parking lot.
“Y/N, are you going to work at the shoe store this afternoon?” Robin asked once she caught up to you. “Want a ride?”
“Shit, I totally forgot! I wasn’t supposed to, but they are doing inventory and they need all the hands…. Shit! Shit!” You cursed, tapping your temple with your fist.
“What is it?” The girl raised an eyebrow. “We’ll take you…”
“No…My mom's car is in the shop… she can’t pick me up after! I was going to ask… Eddie…” There it was the hollow feeling in your chest again.
“I can take you home again”
“Really?” Said robin and you in unison, turning to look at Steve.
“Sure, the shoe store isn’t that far from the family video, I’ll be there once your done” Said Steve like it really wasn’t that big of a deal.
“Oh, thank you thank you thank you! You are such a good guy Steve! I promise I won’t cry this time” You praised and they both laughed.

Doing inventory was so boring but at least it keeps you distracted from your intrusive thoughts about Eddie and whatever he was doing with his girlfriend. “Rachel” you mumble, doing a grin of disgust. What is it about me that isn't good enough?  There have been days when you were almost sure Eddie shared your feelings, but then he would do something like make you sniff his armpit and reduce you to being just his friend again, in fact maybe just “one of the guys”.
The manager gave you the task of closing the store while he retired earlier, justifying himself by saying he had a life. "Yeah, enjoy it for me," you replied when he left you alone in the store.  You were still wearing Steve’s jacket when you step out of the store, good thing you did because outside it was too cold for your liking. “Stupid keys!” you murmur, struggling to lock the front door.
“Need a hand?”
You froze, clenching the keys. His honey voice never failed to comfort your heart, even if he was the reason your heart ached in the first place.
“What are you doing here, Eddie?” You confronted him once you turned around.
“I called and your mom told me where you were…” He was standing leaning against the front of the van with his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket.  “Y/N, what happened?” He stops looking at your face for a second and notices the jacket you are wearing. "Wait, whose jacket is that?" he asked frowning, but he knew well whose it was, he had seen him wearing it on several occasions.
"My mother shouldn't have told you shit... … I'm tired Eddie, just go home..." More than tired you were worried you’d snap at him like you've been doing recently. You can’t handle jealousy without also being angry at him for not telling you anything.
“C’mon, Tangerine” He leaves the van behind and walks towards you.
“Don’t call me that!” He stopped his walk dead in his tracks when you shouted out “I hate your stupid pet names; I've always hated them!”
“I-I thought that...”
“You thought wrong!”
Your soul ached to see Eddie so confused, his brown eyes staring at you almost without recognizing you. You saw that he was about to say something else when you heard a different voice next to you.
“Is everything okay?” Steve was standing on the sidewalk for God knows how long and looked at you a little concerned.
“Yeah, Steve… we're done… so done” You pronounce and walk over to Steve, leaving Eddie behind.
Once again you ended up in Steve's car, trying not to break your promise and cry on him one more time. Your whole body was tense and you rub your palms on your thighs trying with all your might to focus only on your breathing.
“Did I ever tell you the time I was pulled over for speeding?” Steve's voice pulled you out of the spiral of self-loathing into which you were about to sink.
“What?”
“Well, it wasn’t the first time but this particular time…”
“Is it the time you were about to shit yourself?”
“What! Robin told you?! I- I wasn’t even going to tell you that story!”
Surprisingly to you, you were laughing with him. In fact, it hadn't been Robin, it had been Dustin but you let Robin take the blame this time. You sigh, leaving the laugh behind and put your hands together while fidgeting with your thumbs and breathe in slowly, you are pretty sure you’ve fucked up big this time and you’ve just ended your friendship with Eddie. He won’t talk with you like nothing happened tomorrow at school, hell, he probably won't talk to you at all again. Without realizing the tears starting rolling down your face. You try to hide it by turning your head to the side to put your belt on but for your bad luck it gets stuck.
“Here, let me…” Steve leans into your seat and reaches around you to pull the belt and loosen it. "There" he says as he buckles it for you.
Steve didn't try to make you laugh again on the way home, instead he drove quietly to your house giving you time to recover.
He knew well what you were feeling and sympathized with you.
When you get home, you go straight to your bedroom window and open it all the way. There you realize that you didn't return Steve's jacket, you take it off with disdain and throw it on your bed. You wish hard that it was Eddie's leather jacket, the one he was wearing when you went to see him for the first time at the Hideout, the one he wore when he gave you a taste of your first joint, the one he wore when he defended you from the bullies at school and the one he was wearing tonight when you said you were done with him.
You sit down on the floor and lean against the window sill, silently yearning to hear the familiar sound of the engine of the van you adore.
You fall asleep on the floor and wake up in the morning feeling a little under the weather so you decide to skip school, you wanted to go see Eddie but you weren’t feeling ready just yet.  You went down to the kitchen to grab a glass of water and stared at the muffin pan a little too long when you opened the kitchen cabinet to grab the glass.
“Hey, sunshine! What are you up to?”  He said as he walked through the kitchen door. You were at the counter next to the kitchen sink, mixing batter with a wooden spoon. “Sorry to intrude but my shitty neighbors were cursing at each other again and got tired of it” He added when he walked towards you and leaned his arm on the sink to support his body on it and be closer to you.
“You know you don’t have to apologize for coming Eddie” You spoke, turning your body towards him. “I’m making your favorite, double chocolate muffins, I am almost done”
“You are gonna make me gain some weight, tangerine!” He beamed and reached out to grab the spoon from you and lick the batter of it.
“Don’t worry about that, just make sure you share with your uncle this time” You grinned at him, remembering the last time you made him brownies and he told you he ate the whole batch without realizing it while he worked on his d&d campaign.
You turned your back on Eddie and looked for the muffin pan near the oven and started putting the cupcake liners on it, you finished your task and realized your friend was oddly quiet behind you. You turned your head towards him and saw him sitting quietly on the counter still eating the mix.
“Hey! Quit eating the batter, or well have no muffins at all” You demanded while rushing towards him to grab the spoon from him.
He smirked at you. “Wait! You… sorry, you just got a little something on your face” He gently holds your chin up while he wipes your face with his other hand. You stood there unsure of what to do, he had brought his face unnecessarily close to yours and you can feel his breath on yours. His big brown eyes looked into yours and for a moment his gaze lowered to your lips. “A-All good!” He stuttered when he felt his face getting hot, he sat up straight and brought his arms to his waist while avoiding your eyes.
“T-thank you” You mumbled getting back to finish the muffins.
Sometimes you think you imagine things, that you exaggerate your memories making them seem better than they were, fooling yourself sometimes. But what if it wasn't that way? What if he was as scared as you were to step forward with you? With all the feelings that have been haunting you these past few days, you wish you could ask him, but it was a little too late, now he's with that cute girl and you're about to cry over a muffin pan.
Robin called you to check on you in the afternoon and you made sure to tell her you were just fine as you don’t want to bother her again with your sad girl pity party. She was such a good friend to you. A friend. Wait, you could still be his friend! So what if he was with that girl? you can bite the bullet and carry on with your friendship. You are more than willing to let your feelings die as long as you still can be near him.
You made up your mind to go to his trailer before school but you remembered it was Tuesday, so he’ll be at Gareth’s getting ready to go to the Hideout at night. You figured you couldn’t go to the bar since your mom’s car was still at the shop, and it was way too far to bike there at night. Fuck
You made up a thousand plans to get there but none of them were good or even realistic, calling Steve and asking him to give you a ride was the best one of all, but you couldn't force yourself to pick up the phone and call Robin to ask for his number, you decided it was better to let the poor guy rest from you.
“Ugh, c’mon…” You grunted, letting yourself fall heavily on your bed, and you didn't know at what point you fell asleep.
A little clicking noise wakes you up from your sleep, you slowly straighten up in your bed and half asleep you can't figure out what it's, but it sounds like hitting a glass with something metal. You jump out of bed quickly and wipe your cheek with your forearm before going straight to your window.
It was dark, you couldn’t see his face, but there he was kneeling over your window.
“Hey, Tan… I mean Y/N” he softly speaks.
“Eddie come in, what’s going on?”  you stepped back to give him space to jump inside your room. “Let me turn on the lights…”
“No, wait!” He suddenly grabs your wrist to stop you from doing so. “Just your night stand lamp, please”
You nodded and did as he told you, and you loudly gasped when the light from your lamp hit his face. He was injured, his left eyebrow was bleeding and the blood was running to his eye forcing it closed, his lower lip was swollen and also bleeding a little from the corners of his mouth.
“Eddie! What happened?! Did you have an accident?!” You exclaimed as you examined your friend looking for another injury or trace of a car accident.
“No, relax… it was a fight…” He stated rubbing the nape of his neck.
“What? With who?” Your thoughts immediately went to the hard looking guys and drunks that used to hang around at the Hideout a lot.
He hesitates “Rachel dumped me…”
At first you thought it was a lie.
“She did this to you?!”
“No way!... turns out she wanted to make his ex-boyfriend jealous and who better than the loveless freak, right?” He said without making eye contact with you, instead he kept his hand on the back of his neck and shifted his weight between his feet.
“Oh, Eds… wait here…”
You rushed out of your room to go to the bathroom to get the first aid kit, you didn’t consider yourself as a violent person but right now you swear if you ever see that little pirate brat near Eddie again you will slap her in the face, with a chair.
When you returned Eddie was sitting on your bed, you approached him and dragged the chair from your desk to sit in front of him and began to clean his wounds without saying a word. You were wiping the blood from his injuries trying not to stare at him, although it wouldn't have mattered because he, with his eyebrows frowned, was staring at the floor.
Eddie didn't know where to start, he felt he had to tell you so many things, but also that he had lost the right to say them. He didn't even care that much about the whole thing with Rachel, he was more upset that he was being used in such a pathetic way. Besides, to be honest with himself, she herself was a distraction for him. A distraction from how you were making him feel, even now with you cleaning his wounds and trying to make him feel better, he felt something in his chest. He felt a heaviness ever since you called him an asshole in the cafeteria and a bitterness on his tongue when he saw Steve bend over you in his car. That prick. He clenched his hands on his thighs as he remembered the image and looked over his shoulder, there's that damn jacket on your pillow again!
“It's not enough that he has it all, now he's actually stealing you!” He tsked with anger when he quickly stood up.
“What? What are you talking about?” You said looking up totally confused, the bloodstained cotton still in your hand.
“I am talking about Steve! You are with him now!”
“I am not…” You stated while slowly getting up from your chair.
“Don’t lie to me! I saw you in his car last night!” He shook his head and his hands tightened into fists again.
“What? You followed us to his car?!”
“Of course I fucking did!” He exposed, totally frustrated.
“And what if I am? You started dating Rachel first, you know?” There was jealousy and  anger again stuck deep in your throat.  “What was wrong with you all of a sudden? How badly had you been hit? What does it matter if I am with Steve?”
“Because…you!... Because I can’t compete with him!!”
“What?” Your heart skipped a beat, could it be?
“I mean, shit! … he can take you places I can't afford to go…” he mumbled the last part as he settled down on your bed again. He ducked his head and looked down at his empty hands through his bangs. “You deserve so much better than me… Everything I touch I fucking ruin! and what If I hurt you?”
“Eddie, can you look at me, please?”
You had to blink down your tears when he lifted his head to you, those big eyes gazed back at you, he looked like nothing more than a wounded puppy, with his hair in a mess and traces of the fight still on him. You covered your mouth with your hand when he suddenly stood up and leaned closer to you.
“If I could be a different person, I promise, I would be” He said “but I can't bear the thought of losing you because I've been a stupid selfish jerk and wanted you all to myself…” He had finally pulled that plug and was telling you everything whether he had the right to say it or not. “Cause I rather go fucking blind, than let you down Y/N”
You looked at him not believing what you just heard, he wanted me all to himself, you smiled underneath your hand still in your mouth but he couldn't see it. He was looking at you with his lips pressed together and not sure if he wanted any response from you.
“Eds…would you go on a date with me?” You said calmly as you removed your hand.
“Wait, what? Did you not hear what I …”
“I hear, so, would you?”  You were more than sure that he was more than enough for you, so from now on you had to let him know.
“Shit! I’d love to!” He shrugged his shoulders and for the first time since he came through the window you could see the hints of a smile on his face. You smiled back at him and wrapped your arms around him slowly, trying not to hurt him.  “Y/N, one more thing…” He said into your ear as he held you tighter.
“Hmm?”
“Can I go back and call you my tangerine?”

7 Comfort Movies
so I was tagged by one bestie of all time @wretcheddthing and man I can’t wait for you to judge me on these
1. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tumblr media
This movie is number one because it’s quite literally when I gained sentience. It’s my first true memory. My dad came home from Blockbuster and held the VHS up in his hands for little 3 year old me to see, and told me he got it just for us. Jack truly has become a father figure to me over the years and he makes me cry from how much I love him. Plus Henry Selleck and stop motion animation my fucking beloved.
2. Sinister
Okay I can explain. This was one of the first horror movies I genuinely enjoyed when it came out and it still holds up. I love it and I’ll defend it with my life. It’s got good jump scares, and the married couple remind me so much of the Torrance’s from the Shining if they actually loved each other. It’s heartbreaking. And sphookie.
3. Howl’s Moving Castle
This stupid wizard gave me so much gender euphoria as a kid for real. That and it always made me hope one day I’d go on a grand adventure like this, before realising life can be what I make it. I’d say so far it’s going the way I want it to.
4. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Tumblr media
I’m always a slut for a team of people who really fucking shouldn’t get along who end up being a found family fighting side by side against all odds. That, and I’m very happy to see someone who’s mental health trauma reaction is almost like mine. Idk. Makes my little brain go brr and do a little dance. Anyway, I love westerns and this is a very good film because I said so.
5. Before Sunrise
Tumblr media
Get fucked I love this movie KSNSKSKSK 🤍 I’m a sucker for romance movies where you never know if they’re going to get back together, and both characters are so fucking interesting.
6. The Woman in Black
Oh look another horror film on here! I really loved the book growing up and I enjoyed the different yet still very heartbreaking approach they took with the film. Like sinister, the scares still hold up and it’s very sphookie. But also prepare to get your heart ripped out.
7. Midnight Mass
I know I’m cheating on this one, but I don’t watch a whole lot of “comfort films”. They rarely get to me like tv series do, and this one deserves to be on this list. Exploring how the divine can be a monster if you let it, mental health issues and religious trauma… chefs kiss. If you somehow have missed this Netflix series, I highly highly implore you to check it out.
And now I shall tag! @whitefoxes @somethingscarlet13 @vexchief iiiii don’t have a whole lot of people to tag so if you wanna do this feel free to ?

The New Beginning pt.2
Tumblr media
TW: mentions of self harm
You wake up in your room, like everyday, but something’s different, you feel hands wrapped around your waste and feel a warm breath on the back of your neck. It’s Eddie, you remember what had occurred last night and start sobbing at the thought of your ex coming back again. Eddie, who was already awake and was just watching you sleep, kissed you on the back of your neck and whispered “you’re safe with me, baby”, you smile before being taken by the thoughts of what your ex might do to you again.
Eddie notices that and says “Don’t worry, that bastard is never going to harm you again”, you nod and get off the bed, “where are you going, sweetheart?” says Eddie, worried that you’ll do something to yourself again, he blinks and then he’s back at that horrible scenario, you, crying and saying “what have i done” over and over again, Eddie, driving as fast as possible to get to you, and to think that was just two months ago..
“Im going to go get some tea, you want anything?” you say, “a coffee would be nice” says Eddie, not wanting to make you do too much because of the traumatic experience you had yesterday, “ok!” you say. A few minutes pass and Eddie is still on the bed, waiting for you, you enter the room and give Eddie his coffee and sit on the bed next to him with your cup of tea. You knew this was going to be one of your morning rituals, you could just feel it.

okidoki!
Tumblr media
Jack and you never really got along, specially after what happened at the Christmas party, you were both drunk and started making out (even though he was married) but at least both of you regretted it (or did you?).
Unfortunately you were both selected to take care of the hotel in the winter season. It’s not like you two hated each other but you both regretted that night and didn’t want to see each other after that.
First day: Since the budget was low you both had to share a room (a room for couples, with one bed) you were in your room and then Jack came in but you didn’t notice until he spoke “well, well, well, I guess the best duo is back at it again” “just shut up, Jack” you said. Jack walked out of the room and didn’t bother you for the rest of the day.
Second day: You woke up in the middle of the night, you had a weird dream, more like a nightmare to you, it was a sex dream with you and Jack. You went to the bathroom and then you felt strong hands around your waste, and a warm kiss on your neck. “Jack..?”, he didn’t respond, “J-Jack..?” you said, again, “don’t think I didn’t hear you talk in your sleep about me, kitten~”. “W-what??” you said, “yeah i heard you, you big simp” he laughs. You didn’t speak to each other for the rest of the day.
Third day: Jack was writing on his typing machine, you approached him, “h-hey, about yesterday..” you said, “sit on my lap, kitten” he said with a warm smile on his face “o-ok” you said. You sat on his lap, he began to write again. “Ya know I love you right?” he said, “yeah” you said, “do you love me too?” he said with a smirk, already knowing the answer, “y-yeah i do” you said.
Forth day, Night time: You went to bed a little earlier than usual, Jack usually went to bed around midnight or 3AM, and you usually waited for him, you were under the sheets and started to fall asleep, you were suddenly woken by a soft kiss on your lips, “hi” he says “hi” you say, “just wanted to say goodnight” he said,”aww thank you” you said
10th day: You woke up a little earlier than usual so you decided to go to downstairs, to check what Jack was writing. You approached his desk, you touched the big stack of papers he had left there from the night before. You only saw one thing written over and over again “i love Y/N” you got scared and took a step back, when you did you felt a warm breath on your neck “how do you like it?“ he said, “u-uh” you said, you knew Jack loved you but you didn’t know he loved you THAT much.
11th day: You woke up, Jack had his face on your chest, you sarted playing with his hair. “Y/N” he said, “yeah?” you said, “ya know I would do anything for you don’t ya?” he said, while wrapping his arms around your waste “yeah i do” you said with a warm comforting smile. You both knew you were bad for each other but you were also perfect for each other. Kinda like an addiction that kept growing and growing and it never ended.

The New Beginning
Tumblr media
Summary: After your boyfriend broke up with you, you were comforted by your good friend Eddie, but then you and him let your emotions get the best of you
TW: argument, aggressive language (swearing), abusive ex
E/B/N = Ex Boyfriend’s Name
You were devastated. You and your boyfriend had been together for 3 years. You just spent your whole day in bed listening to mitski and Billie Eilish and crying your eyes out.
Thank god your friend Eddie was going to visit you today, he was the only person who could comfort you right now. Yes of course he was great friends with your, now, ex. But he still cared about you. Like a lot.
“Y/N! I’m here!” said Eddie entering your small apartment. “Y/N?” Eddie got a little panicked from not seeing you near the door to greet him. “In here” you said, with your tired voice and eye bags from crying so much last night.
Eddie enters your room, his smile turns into a sad face. He was really sad that you were in such pain, but also kinda relieved that you were finally out of that toxic relationship. He sits in your bed, next to you, “Y/N…”, he says, while playing with your hair.
Eddie gets up and claps his hands “Come on! It’s time to get up!” you look at him and in your mind you’re just thinking “dammit he looks so good today”. Eddie looks at you with a warm smile, he helps you get up and you go eat lunch.
After lunch Eddie helps you with your self-care routine, he tells you to go take a shower to freshen up and he sits in the bed, waiting for you to finish. After that you two go for a walk in the park, Eddie picks up a flower and puts it in your hair, and you start blushing (intensely). Luckily he didn’t notice (or did he?)
When you get home you both sit on the bed and just start talking about the rain, music, anything. But then your sweet conversation gets interrupted by an aggressive knock on the door “I go get it!” says Eddie (not knowing what is about to happen)
Eddie opens the door only to find your ex standing in the entrance of your apartment “they don’t wanna talk to you, E/B/N” says Eddie with a cold face “shut the fuck up and let me in” says your ex “No.” says Eddie while trying to close the door. Your ex grabs the door and tries to barge in. Eddie starts screaming at him saying that he’s “a fucking psycho” and to “leave Y/N alone”.
You’re still sitting in the bed waiting for Eddie to get back, but then you hear screaming. You get out of your room only to see your ex trying to get in and Eddie holding the door “Get back to your room Y/N!” says Eddie “is that bitch Y/N here!?” says your ex. You run back to your room, with tears in your eyes, you could still hear your ex saying that you’re cheating on him with his friend and that that’s not fair.
Eddie was finally able to close the door after saying that he could easily call the police and tell them what he did to you, your ex got scared and stoped trying to get in. Eddie went into your room only to see you on your bed holding a plushie, crying. “I’m so sorry” you say “Sorry? Sorry for what?” says Eddie “for him” you said. You and Eddie look at each other in silence.
Eddie gets close to you, you start to blush again, eddie puts a hand on your cheek and gives you a kiss on the forehead “it’s all going to be ok” he says. You only believed those words when they went out of Eddie’s mouth. Eddie looks at you and realises that he’s the only person who’s right for you. He gives you another kiss, but this time on the mouth, you’re shocked, you didn’t know that Eddie liked you too. He pulls out of the kiss and you are blushing more. Eddie laughs and gives you a hug. “I love you baby, there, I said it” you start getting overwhelmed but try to take it in “I-I love you too”

My #1 post of 2022
Eddie Munson reacting to their S/O wearing his shirt to sleep
Tumblr media
-This night was very cold and you only had a shirt on, Eddie decided to give you his hellfire shirt and, wow;
-You looked stunning, yeah of course you’d look stunning in any clothes but this specific outfit seemed to turn Eddie on;
-You and Eddie are on the bed and Eddie starts kissing your neck passionately, seeing you in his hellfire shirt just really did something to him;
-You seem to notice how Eddie acts when you’re wearing that shirt so you decide to tease him here and there, wearing his shirt to do chores and other things around the house;
-Even though Eddie gets kinda sad when you take off his shirt he LOVES to see what’s underneath it

THE SHINING (Sorta) Book Review
The Shining
By Stephen King
Oh boy, oh boy, was this book nothing like I expected. I’ll start by  saying I’d never seen the movie and that I knew . . . well, essentially nothing about the book. Actually, the only thing I knew about The Shining was the few seconds of it shown at the drive-in theater in the movie Twister. And that was only after my mom said, “Hey, look, it’s The Shining.”
I’ve never been a horror connoisseur. Probably the opposite. I was the kid that jumped and yelped when tapped on the shoulder, and the scariest thing I’d seen was Alien through my fingers at age fifteen. But after meeting my significant other and his love of most things dark and spooky, I found myself at the tip of a compromise to watch more horror so long as I got to watch something cute after—though my love of movie romances died very quickly upon the re-watch and analysis of a few old favorites. But we’re not here to discuss that.
We’re here for Jack Torrance and his family. This isn’t a book review. Really. I don’t have enough exposure to the horror genre of  books (this was the first of its kind I’ve picked up) to give an actual review. But I can tell you what I thought was neat and (probably the  biggest reason this blog post might make someone argue with me) why I really disliked the movie.
So let’s jump in! I’ll do my best not to be super spoiler-y, but take this as your warning, just in case.
As far as horror goes, The Shining had a surprisingly sedate  pace. This isn’t a bad thing; it was just the exact opposite of the “BOO! AH!” I had been expecting. Instead, The Shining takes on the slow, steady feel of something approaching you from behind. Which . .  . okay, that might be worse. I freely admit I had to put the book down at least twice from getting so creeped out. Anytime Danny was alone, I braced for impact.
Jack’s rather rapid descent (that’s not a spoiler, right?) into the realm of those-that-are-very-mentally-unsound wasn’t a surprise. Even if I wasn’t sure who exactly had that axe when I saw the snippet of film, it wasn’t hard to figure out from about page—and here’s a laugh for  you—thirteen.
Unfortunately, I’ve discovered I’m one of those people that once they know what the source of “the scary” is, they’re not really that scared anymore. Fun facts about Anna. The scariest part of the book, for me, was well before the climax of the story. That’s not a critique in any way. Quite a few instances after the spoiler-y part I’m talking about—think outside with snow and, if you’ve read it, you’ll get it—were  pretty unsettling.
I definitely preferred reading the sections that were from Danny’s point of view. King does a nice job letting us into the child’s head without making him seem too much like an adult. That’s a hard balance to strike.
Now . . . the movie. I was well on my way to strongly disliking The Shining in movie format long before a friend told me that Stephen King hated it. I know. I know. It’s a “classic.” But it really shouldn’t even be called The Shining as there is very little to do with King’s book within that screenplay. I was, and continue to be, disappointed. Most of my major complaints are complaints King had about the movie himself, so let’s get into a few of those.
Problem #1? Jack Torrance’s character. In the movie, you know immediately that Jack is out of his mind. There’s no mystery.  No saying to yourself, “Hey, this guy is genuinely trying to be better, even if he’s sorta failing at it. He’s owned up to his mistakes (mostly) and a begrudging try is better than none at all.” Trying is a huge part  of redemption arcs, and King’s novel gives Jack tons and tons of chances to be better. Jack not taking every opportunity to be better is a part of Jack being human. It allows for a rounded and character-driven story.
Problem #2? The movie made Wendy look like a terrible mother. If you’ve read the book, you know she showed care and love for her son and would do anything to protect him even if she was frightened too. Movie-Wendy may as well have been a cardboard cutout placed on set.
Problem #3? Danny has almost nothing to do with the plot of the movie besides a few takeaways adjacent to the novel’s content. As I said for #1, The Shining is a character-driven novel. You have nothing without those characters and their flaws and feelings and fears. This is the main reason the movie flopped for me. It was just a two and a half hour calliope loop of incoherence with no character development anywhere in sight.
Now, before someone comes after me, unlike Stephen King, I didn’t hate the movie with a passion. I can appreciate the cinematography and Jack Nicholson’s unhinged performance along with the creep factor, but the movie credits really should have said “inspired by” rather than  “based upon” Stephen King’s novel.

1) what were your initial impressions of the book? my first impression on the shining was how much I loved the small family dynamic, and how stephen stuck to just one storyline throughout the book. I loved everything about the overlook hotel and danny’s ability to “shine” and how much he loved his dad even though he was far from perfect.
2) who was your favorite character? why? my favorite characters were dick hollorann and wendy torrance. I loved how dick was always there to mentor and comfort danny when his special ability scared or confused him. I also loved how wendy always put danny before herself. (for example, coming out of their room to get food for danny when jack was somewhere in the hotel forced to try to kill his family because of the ghosts of the overlook.)
3) who was your least favorite character? why? my least favorite character was the man dressed as a dog! that really creeped my sister and I out. not only was he weird, he said some very questionable things to and about danny.
4) favorite part of the book?
my favorite part of the book was when jack was chasing danny with his roque mallet, and just as he was about to be forced to kill his own son because of the spirits possessing him, his love for his son danny really shows when he pushes the hundreds of spirits away and told his son to run far away from him so that he wouldn’t get hurt when the spirits pushed jack back over the edge.
5) what was the theme? this one is kind of tricky for me! I would have to say that the theme is fear is only as real as you make it, and love overcomes everything, even being “possessed” by spirits at the overlook :)
6) what would I rate this book out of a scale from 1-10? I would rate this book an 8/10. the book is way better than the movie, first off. second off, the book isn’t just “horror”, it has a meaning as we discussed above.
now it’s YOUR turn to answer these questions! if you don’t feel like answering all of these, rate the book out of a scale from 1-10, and leave your personal thoughts on the book as I’m curious and would love to know :)

Heya, shining tags- but I'm so glad someone else agrees, like I said I *just* finished it and I can't stop thinking of comparisons, like just how intense that climax was- I do love the movie Danny tricking his father because he was so preoccupied with staying inside that he didn't know how to get out of it. But the pure emotions of the book is driving me insane hours later. That it was the Overlook that killed itself, it was too busy trying to get to Danny it couldn't even take care of itself- the fact its last words were "I win!" Is terrifying before it finally blows.
And also! I just have to mention this but Hallorann getting possessed himself for a minute! Inside the shed, he grabbed a mallet and it just flooded him: the dying lash of the hotel but it wasn't enough. It really shows how insidious the hotel really was, that it was playing with the Torrances the entire time! Until it finally thought it had Jack ready to do anything. But he still loved his kid, he beat Wendy and Hallorann but God's Danny standing before him saying "it's almost over." Before kissing his bloody hand- 😭
I know I just rambled some more but omg this book is driving me insane and I was so glad you were positive about my long ass tags, I don't normally leave tags and that but I just had to. Lol
I’m also really glad I found someone who agrees with me! And all of this, just totally yes - I love the hotel trying to drag Hallorann into it as well, and then Dick pushing the urge out because he needed to help Danny. Stephen King is just so good at writing chilling endings that feel more sinister than anything else in the book
This book and in fact my post about it sparked a nearly 10 minute long ramble to my history class at one point about how different the book and movie were, so don’t even worry about rambling! I do it all the time - The Shining is my Roman Empire lol

Ten People From Horror Movies That I Want to Kill With My Bare Hands (plus reasons cause I know y'all are gonna ask)
Trigger Warnings: mentions of attempted rape, incest, and abuse
1. Chucky (Child's Play series)
Tumblr media
He doesn't deserve Tiffany. This fine ass woman waited for him for ten years and he has the gall to laugh in her face when she thought that the ring he left was because he wanted to propose and then proceeded to trap her the same way he was trapped. Not to mention the first thing he says to her after being gone for ten years is literally "I thought you were gonna let yourself go" oh my GOD Tiffany please love yourself. He's a little bitch and Tiffany needs to raise her standards. Also, he tries to kill a child for like three movies straight? While I love the Chucky movies, I get no greater satisfaction then from watching him die at the end of all of them. (The exception being Cult of Chucky)
2. Frank Cotton (Hellraiser)
Tumblr media
Steals his brother's wife and then tries to force himself onto his niece. Knowingly opened the puzzle box because he's a literal dumbass and then gets upset when he gets sent to hell. Kills his brother and wears his skin. Come here you skinless freak I'm gonna send you back to the Cenobites myself.
3. Alex Le Domas (Ready or Not)
Tumblr media
The fact that homeboy was even willing to chance having Grace pull the card proves that he's a bitch. Why don't you try being honest with the woman you supposedly love and tell her about your family's weird curse? I'm pretty fucking sure that'll get her to stop asking to tie the knot if she knows there's a chance she's gonna pull a card and all of her in-laws are gonna proceed to try to kill her. And the fact that this man had the audacity to chance sides and try to kill his WIFE??? Sorry, but I hope you enjoy being in hell get fucked Alex
4. Max (The Lost Boys)
Tumblr media
This man saw that his son was dead and just went "haha guess he misbehaved" and I'm not exaggerating that was literally the dialogue. He also tells a woman, Lucy, how to parent her kids and tries to manipulate her into becoming a vampire instead of just, maybe, I don't know? Getting to know her, building a solid foundation for a relationship, and being honest about it? Instead of basically holding her children hostage by turning them into vampires and using her love for them against her. Basically I would kill this man with my bare hands for both his sons and Lucy and that's on that.
5. Guy Woodhouse (RoseMarys Baby)
Tumblr media
This man can catch these hands any day of the week. He lets SATAN r*** his goddamn WIFE, and then proceeds to gaslight her for nine fucking MONTHS about how her pregnancy is totally normal and how she's not carrying the actual anti-christ even when it seems she's inches from actual and literal death. Just so he can be an actor. I'm going to beat his ass all the way to hell, Satan come get your man
6. Christian Hughes (Midsommar)
Tumblr media
This cheating, lying piece of shit. The movie starts with how he plans on breaking up with his girlfriend but refuses to because he's too chicken shit and then he proceeds to make plans to leave for a month (?) without telling said girlfriend and is never honest with her. THEN, he fucking steals his friends thesis before finally cheating on his girlfriend. I hate, hate, HATE this man, and I'm not saying he deserved to get put into a bear skin and then set on fire, but he definitely deserved something
7. Chris Hargensen (Carrie)
Tumblr media
It's no wonder Carrie had a nervous fucking breakdown when this is her school bully. Chris traumatizes Carrie when she gets her first period, and refuses to accept that she was in the wrong??? And instead blames Carrie for her and her friends detention/suspension from prom when they were the ones that literally threw tampons and pads at a girl who thought she was dying all while chanting "plug it up"? And, to top it off, she gets a girl who's been ostracized her entire life elected prom queen just to pour pigs blood on her in front of the entire senior class. Chris Hargensen can rot in hell and I can only think about fighting her every time I watch it.
8. Jack Torrance (The Shining)
Tumblr media
The scene where he specifically yells at Wendy when she comes into his study and you can see the way her face falls really solidified my hatred for this man. Jack is the only other adult around for Wendy to talk to and he shames her for wanting human connection and a conversation from her fucking husband. Not only that, but he once broke the arm of his child and this was pre-hotel. So, basically, the hotel turning him insane or not, Jack was always a piece of shit and I'm glad Danny was able to later confront his feelings about his father in Doctor Sleep.
9. Charley Brewster (Fright Night)
Tumblr media
Within the first five minutes of the film, we literally see him ignoring his girlfriend's lack of consent and pressuring her into having sex with him. Then, he stalks and obsesses over his neighbor and just so happens to find out that his neighbor is a vampire. Since he has absolutely no survival instincts, he makes this unfortunately clear that he knows and even denies the chance to pretend that he didn't see anything when Jerry confronts him. All I'm saying is that Charley really shouldn't have been surprised that Jerry was going to try to kill him and that all of the decisions that Charley made were bad ones. Especially the ones that lead to Ed (his bestfriend) dying and Amy (his girlfriend) almost being turned into a vampire. 10/10 would stake
10. Michael "Mike" Williams (the Blair Witch Project)
Tumblr media
As someone who used to camp regularly and has experience in survivalist training, Mike is a prime example of what NOT to do during a survival situation. He is the FIRST to panic, the first to point fingers, and he fucking throws away the map. He. Fucking. Throws. Away. The. Map. All of his decisions are made on impulse and he never even tries to be logical in this entire situation. His character makes my blood boil because even if there wasn't a witch keeping them trapped there someone like that will end up making chances of survival slim anyways. Go stand in the corner and think about what you've done.

If it isn’t too much to ask can I please get a headcanon of Jack Torrance, Micheal and hannibal reacting to their s/o calling them daddy. Thank u and I really love u and ur blog 👉👈🥺
Jack Torrance
“What did you call me?”
Shocked at first but immediately excited. He gets that snide little grin spread across his lips as he all but pounces on you
Probably one to fall into the Daddy category with the most grace
I’m talking feeling you up, biting your neck and smirking into your skin as you wiggle all over him
“Do you want Daddy’s cock that bad? Then you’re going to have to earn it, babydoll.”
Asks you to call him Daddy outside of sex too sometimes and it embarrasses the hell out of you, but its SUCH A TURN ON TO HIM IF YOU DO
He rides a high all day when he hears those words leave your lips. He loves making you beg Daddy to let you cum or ask him for something you really want
Awfully unfair Daddy but is a-okay with his s/o calling him that!
Michael Myers
Michael just kind of pauses in what he’s doing and tilts his head to let himself process what the hell it was you just said to him
Then immediately keeps fucking you or doing whatever it was he was doing before you stopped to call him that
It doesn’t particularly phase him. I feel like you could call Michael anything and he’d be just like ‘yeah whatever’
It kind of riles him up more than he lets on though
Do it at just the right time during sex and you’ll find your throat being gripped a little harder and his breaths coming a little faster as he pounds into you, all but smothering you in him as he pushes over you
If you’re annoying him and teasingly comment ‘What’s Daddy gonna do, spank me~?” HE STRAIGHT UP WILL SPANK YOU JUST. ON HIS LAP HAND ON ASS SMACKS.
Give him more time and he may adapt to the role a bit better but for the most part unphased by the phrasing, so you can always just keep calling him that
Hannibal Lecter
The one most caught off guard by the statement, but quickest recovery time
“Is that what you want, Y/N? For Daddy to take care of you? Use your words, love.”
Flawless transition into Daddy and also the most responsible Daddy!
Mostly in it for your pleasure and your enjoyment, but has a secret love of hearing the words fall from your mouth as you beg him to ravish you more
Cheeky about it too. Will sometimes tease you about it by whispering into your ear at parties, where he knows people could hear you, “I love the outfit you’re wearing, little one. Did you put it on just for Daddy?”
Man if any of these characters were my Daddy I’d want it to be Hannibal okay.

The Haunting of Bly Manor: Episode Analysis
*SPOILERS*
Episode 7 - The Two Faces, Part Two
Episode 7 of The Haunting of Bly Manor is mainly a continuation of Episode 3, which has the same name, as we explore more of Peter and Rebecca’s backstory and a lot more questions also start to get answered.
Tumblr media
The episode starts as Dani has been tied up and is coming back into consciousness after Miles (possessed by Peter) hit her over the head at the end of Episode 6. As Peter is trying to set his plan in motion, for him and Rebecca to possess Miles and Flora’s bodies permanently, he suddenly gets thrown into a memory. Unlike Hannah, Rebecca and Flora who ‘dream-hop’ through many of their memories, Peter only ever gets put into one of his memories.
Tumblr media
The memory that Peter repeatedly gets pulled into is the memory of a time when his mother came to visit him. Peter’s mother knocks on the door and when Peter lets her in, she tells him “I’m out” and that this time she’s out “forever”, because she says “I suppose they’d say I’m cured”. It’s never explicitly made clear where she’s “out” from, but it’s most likely that she’s been released from a mental institution for her failure to help her son when she knew that her husband was molesting him (which is something that is insinuated later in the episode).
Peter’s mother tells Peter that she needs money from him now that she’s been released and so she blackmails him, saying that she’ll show Henry his “juvenile records”, if he doesn’t give her any money.
The scene then moves to the memory which Rebecca has entered, where we find out that “priceless heirlooms” have been stolen from the manor and that Peter had been embezzling money from Henry. From this it becomes apparent that in Episode 5 when Hannah saw Peter stealing a necklace from Charlotte’s vanity, he was stealing it so that he could sell it and give the money to his other to keep her quiet. It seems that Peter was stealing the “priceless heirlooms”, such as the necklace, to give the money to his mother. However, the “quarter million pounds” that Peter embezzled from Henry most likely really was for the purpose that he said - so that he could run away to make a life in America with Rebecca and free himself from his mother’s blackmailing.
Tumblr media
A small little detail; is that after Rebecca finds out that Peter is dead, we see her zoned out in one of Miles and Flora’s lessons. On the desk that Rebecca is sitting behind, there are some word blocks that spell out “redrum”, which is a nod to the 1980’s film ‘The Shining’. Mike Flanagan created The Haunting of Bly Manor and also directed the 2019 sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.
It’s interesting to note that in The Shining “redrum” spells “murder” backwards, and Rebecca ends up being murdered by Peter.
This is not the only reference to The Shining, as there was another one in Episode 1. When we see Dani leaving the hostel which she’s been staying at, as she’s shutting the door behind her, we can see that her room number was 217. In the original book of The Shining by Steven King, the haunted room that Jack Torrance enters is room 217 (but in the movie it’s room 237).
As well as these two instances, there is yet another reference to The Shining, also in Episode 1. When Miles and Flora are locking Dani in the cupboard, we get a shot of them just before the shut the door on her. The shot of Miles and Flora standing side by side with one another evokes the memorable shot of the twins in The Shining.
Tumblr media
Rebecca tries to suggest to Peter that they still continue their previous plan to run off to America and tells him that she doesn’t mind if people think that she’s “some batty old witch who talks to thin air”. Peter tells her that they can’t do that because he “can’t leave Bly” and he “can’t get past the end of the drive”, but then he discovers that he can possess Rebecca’s body just like he can with Miles’. The two of them devise a plan where Peter will possess Rebecca’s body and he’ll try to leave while still in her body. They carry out the plan the next morning but as Rebecca runs to the boundary of the grounds, Peter is ejected from her body.
This brings up a question of confusion, as in Episode 9 Dani manages to leave Bly with The Lady in the Lake in partial possession of her body and neither of them were thrown out from Dani’s body. Since Dani is able to leave the grounds, the reason that Peter was pushed out of Rebecca’s body must be because he exited her body himself. As he was about to cross the boundary he probably came to the realisation that if he left while still in Rebecca’s body, then he and Rebecca will never be able to be properly together again and so he pulled himself out so that he could think of another way that they could be together. However it also could be that Dani stopped Viola’s gravity well when she invited Viola into herself (we see all the other ghosts are released when this happens in Episode 9), but this still wouldn’t explain Peter’s oddly quiet reaction when he gets pushed out of Rebecca’s body at the manor’s boundary.
This would also make sense of a lot of a few other things as well. It would make sense of the odd reaction that Peter gives after the failed attempt at escape, when Rebecca says “it didn’t work” - he doesn’t look particularly sad that it didn’t work, even though he was so enthusiastic to finally be able leave and be with Rebecca. It would also make sense of when Older Jamie says that “Peter had not been back to find her, he had left her at the boundary of Bly”. Peter disappears for so long because he’s trying to come up with a different plan for them to be able to be with one another.
Tumblr media
After trying to leave the manor in Rebecca’ body doesn’t work, for whatever reason, Peter then comes back to Rebecca with his new plan. Peter explains that when he tries to take possession of Rebecca’s body, neither of them mean to, but he always tries to push her out and she always tries to push him out and so the possession is “temporary”. He tells her that there is a way that they can be together forever and able to touch each other but to do this he says he needs to be given permanent possession of her body and for this to happen she needs to invite him in and give him consent. However when he’s explaining this to Rebecca, Peter doesn’t explain that his grand plan for them to be together means that he’ll take over her body and they’ll only be together by being tucked away in a memory together.
After being given consent from Rebecca to have permanent control over her body, which he gets through the phrase “it’s you, it’s me, it’s us”, Peter carries out his plan. Rebecca gets tucked away “in a memory of them”, and although they are together and can touch one another, this is not what she wanted (nor is this what he really promised to her when he got her to give him her consent) and it’s not ideal for him either as he is now left in Rebecca’s body “here, alone”.
Tumblr media
Since Peter is now alone in Rebecca’s body and he doesn’t want to continue to be alone, he decides that he’ll drown her body so that they’ll both become ghosts and they will both be together that way. We see Rebecca (possessed by Peter) crying as she walks into the lake, and then we see Peter crying in bed with Rebecca in the tucked away memory, which is how we know that Peter was in possession of Rebecca’s body when she drowned.
But then as the water starts to enter Rebecca’s body’s lungs, Peter leaves and Rebecca herself is forced back into control of her own body again. We see just what type of a person he is, as he leaves her on her own to feel the pain of the drowning. In a parallel to this, this shows us just how much Rebecca cares for Flora, as in Episode 9 she tells Flora that she’ll take over her body before she’s dragged into the lake and she’ll feel everything for her - a completely selfless action considering that she’s already had to endure the pain once.
Like Peter and Hannah, Rebecca immediately turns into a ghost and we see her mourning her body and the betrayal of her trust, as she stands by the side of the lake and cries. This explains to us why, when Rebecca was possessing Flora’s body, she always walked to the lake - because she sits by the lake and mourns her life.
This is the most prominent example of the love versus possession conversation that Dani and Jamie were having in Episode 3. Peter says that he loves Rebecca, but he displays no true love for her at all, to ask for her complete trust and consent and then to betray her by stealing her life. Peter is acting completely on selfishness and is treating Rebecca like a possession who he manipulate for his own personal benefit. To truly love someone is to want the absolute best for them, even if that comes at your own expense; but when Peter makes this decision he isn’t thinking about Rebecca at all, he’s only thinking about his own desires and loneliness.
After Peter drowns her body, Rebecca returns once more to the memory of when Peter gave her Charlotte’s fur coat. The memory was once a very happy one for Rebecca, but now it’s been tainted by Peter’s selfish actions. Rebecca now sees how Peter manipulated her as she says that “I didn’t agree”, she only agreed to them being together not for him to take her life from her.
Tumblr media
Peter suddenly gets pulled back into the only memory that he gets pulled into, the memory of his mother coming to visit him. Peter says that from constantly having to return to this memory he feels “like I’m in hell” and his mother says “well, where else would you go”, stating that there is nowhere else that he could go after what he did to to Rebecca.
Tumblr media
Peter then gets released from the memory he was being tucked away in and he returns to the attic, where Miles and Flora are in the process of freeing Dani. Peter stops Miles and Flora from letting Dani go and Rebecca returns from her dream hopping.
To try and convince Miles and Flora to give consent for their bodies to be possessed, Peter says that they’ll be able to go to their “forever house” where they’ll be with their parents forever. The “forever house” is a reference to The Haunting of Hill House where Olivia made blueprints of a “forever home” for the family to live in once they got enough money from flipping Hill House (but when Olivia dies, Hill House becomes the forever home). The “forever house/home” is something that is supposed to symbolise safety and family, however in both Hill House and Bly Manor this isn’t really the case. In Hill house the promise of the “forever home” that Olivia dreamt of was never fulfilled; and in Bly Manor the “forever house” that Peter is talking about is just for Miles and Flora to be permanently tucked away in false memories.
Despite Peter’s manipulation, he does know what love really looks like. He tells Miles that, when he’s tucked away in the “forever house” with his parents, he’ll be “with two people who love you so much, so much. That makes you the luckiest man in the world, the richest person, I wish I could be that rich”. Peter recognises that being in a safe place with two people who love you makes you the “richest person” and was something that he never got to experience himself. Not that this makes his behaviour acceptable, but it may from his childhood where Peter developed a distorted view of love and posession, and so this is why he manipulates others and treats them as his possessions - while Peter is supposed to be the conventional ‘villain’, this fleshing out of his past makes his character much more multifaceted and complex, as well as making his actions much less black and white. This added depth and complication is one of the things that makes Bly Manor and its characters so deeply flawed yet extremely relatable.
Tumblr media
When Peter takes permanent possession of Miles’ body, when Miles gets up we can see that his right eye is still blue but his left eye is now brown. This is a sign that the person is no longer completely themselves anymore and we see the same thing happen to Dani’s eyes in Episode 9.
Tumblr media
We then see Miles (possessed by Peter) walking with Hannah to the well, to try and get her to come to the realisation that she’s dead. He compares Hannah to the cartoon Wile E. Coyote, who would run off a cliff and just keep going, just as Hannah has died (run off the cliff) but she just keeps going and doesn’t become a proper ghost. Miles explains to Hannah that “when Wile E. Coyote looked down, then he’d fall, only when he looked down”, so he tells Hannah that she also needs to look down in order for her to come to terms with her situation and then she’ll also fall (become a ghost). The looking down that Miles wants Hannah to do is not just an actual looking down the well to see her corpse, but this is also a metaphorical looking down of her seeing the ‘big picture’ and for her to stop being in denial.
Hannah finally looks down the well and sees her corpse. She isn’t interrupted (like when Dani interrupted her doing this in Episode 1), but she’s given a proper moment to take in what she’s seeing, and so she is able to come to process and accept her death - just like Peter got to see and accept his body being dragged away by The Lady in the Lake; and just like Rebecca saw and mourned for her body by the side of the lake.
We then return to Flora and Dani in the attic and we find out that Rebecca only pretended to go along with Peter’s plan and possess Flora’s body. Rebecca tells Flora that “no one should ever need that much help”, showing us that she understands true, selfless love and to ask that much of someone is not caring for them at all. This also relates back to what Peter did to Rebecca, he should have never needed “that much help” from Rebecca as to take her entire life from her.
As well as this, it shows us how much Peter is like his mother. Peter’s mother asked too much of him and, in a way, ended up killing him by blackmailing him for money, which is just as he told her that “I hope you know that, late at night, that you killed your own son”. Peter is just as manipulative as his mother when he persuades Rebecca and Miles to trust him so that he can possess their bodies - needing to ask for “that much help” from a person is not love.

Book Eighty-One: Billy Summers
“Maybe a chilly story needs a chilly writing room, he thinks. It’s as good an explanation as any, since the whole process is a mystery to him, anyway.”
Tumblr media
Well hello there, Constant Readers! Have you missed me and my half-assed reviews of Steve books?
Crickets.
I know I’ve promised book reviews, television recaps... all the things. But I’m kind of busy living and enjoying life at the moment, without the need to take notes or screen grabs. That being said, I really did enjoy Billy Summers, and it took me almost a hundred pages to remember how this blogging thing worked. I was supposed to take notes? Dark Tower references? DePere, Wisconsin? Should I remember that for some reason? But don’t worry, it was like riding a bike. This blog is full of all the stuff you’ve come to know and love, as well as SPOILERS!!! So, if you have not finished the book yet, stop reading and come back once you’ve turned the last page.
SPOILERS!!! Consider yourselves adequately warned.
Billy Summers doesn’t really include anything supernatural, and it’s more suspenseful and plot driven than some of Steve’s other books. In other words, it’s another great recommendation for people who don’t claim they don’t like Stephen King.
Billy is an assassin who has mastered the art of “dumb like a fox”.
Tumblr media
He’s hired for a new assignment, but something seems off. Billy has been in the assassin game long enough to know when something is foul in the state of Denmark. He doesn’t trust the people who hired him, and he has the distinct impression he’s going to end up as the patsy in the end. But, he plays along as Dave Lockridge, single man and writer. He moves onto a charming street in Midwood (I kept reading this as Midworld... thanks, Steve), makes friends with all the neighbors, and beats all the neighborhood kids at Monopoly on the weekends. This part of the book was so tender, it reminded me a lot of Ted Brautigan and the kids from Hearts in Atlantis. Of all the things Billy later regrets, it’s letting these kids down, and having them trust him when he was obviously so untrustworthy.
During the day, Billy writes  at his office in Gerald Tower. There’s always a tower, isn’t there? And this tower takes on more significance, because it’s the spot from which Billy is supposed to shoot Joel Allen. Joel is due to be transferred to Midwood, and marched up the steps of the courthouse just like in The Outsider. Constant Readers remember how well that worked out...
Tumblr media
Billy has an assassins creed: he only shoots bad guys. On the scale of bad guys, Joel Allen isn’t quite Ted Bundy, but he’s not Mr. Rodgers either. He had something of a “me too” moment when he accidentally mistook a feminist writer for a sex worker; and there was a gun fight outside of a poker game. It’s enough for Billy to work with.
Billy is waiting for Joel to be transferred to the Midworld Midwood county lock-up; and he bides his time by actually doing some writing. He covers his tragic childhood (his mom worked in a laundry facility, just like Steve’s mom), and his time in the military. This is where Steve really shines. Billy’s book is written in a childish tone that just WORKS. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a simple-minded assassin. But still waters, friends. As the story goes on, Billy’s voice grows and improves. Well done, Steve, it’s like two books for the price of one.
In between writing, Billy assumes another fake identity (Dalton Smith), and secures a bolt hole to hide out in once his job is complete. Believe it or not, the murder of Joel Allen is such an insignificant part of the book. Billy successfully takes him out, and makes it to his bolt hole undetected. And this is really where the second part of the book starts.
One rainy night, Billy hears random noises outside his apartment. He looks out the window in time to see a van full of guys dump a female body into a gutter. Billy should have just anonymously called the police... but if he had done that, we wouldn’t have a story. Instead, Billy goes full on Captain Save A Ho, and pulls the young woman from the gutter. It’s clear she had been drugged and assaulted, and she manages to puke all over Billy’s place.
Neat.
When Alice wakes up in the morning, she recognizes Billy from the police sketches, but promises not to rat him out for the Joel Allen murder. They form an unlikely friendship that includes watering the neighbor’s plants, watching Blacklist, and Alice reading Billy’s book. Basically, they were sheltering in place before that was even a thing; something Steve jokes about. Eventually, Billy knows he needs to get the rest of his money for the Joel Allen hit, and punish the guys who raped Alice.
Y’all. I’m still having nightmares over the most creative use of a hand mixer I have ever read. I thought the can-opener in Lisey’s Story was bad... this was worse. But the kind of worse you feel good about, if that makes sense.
Tumblr media
After finding out the name of the guy behind the Joel Allen hit, killing a few bad dudes, and pissing off a bitch named Marge (fucking Marge if you’re nasty), Billy and Alice hunker down in Colorado with Billy’s assassin booking agent, Bucky.
As soon as Billy and Alice entered Colorado and the town of Sidewinder was mentioned, I knew where we were headed. Yeah buddy, Overlook time!
Tumblr media
Billy takes to writing in a little shack behind Bucky’s house, and inside the shack is a Polaroid picture of the topiary animals at the Overlook. Every time Billy looks at the picture, the animals seem to have shifted. It gives him a cold sense of dread.
There’s a certain parallel I picked up on in Colorado: Jack Torrance and Billy Summers are both haunted men running away from things. The Overlook was where Jack went to dry out, and work on his writing. He wanted to work on his marriage, and become a better father to Danny. We all know he failed spectacularly. Then, we’ve got Billy. Billy actually gets writing accomplished, and becomes an unlikely father-figure to Alice. Despite having just as much, if not more baggage than Jack, Billy doesn’t let it define him. He acknowledges it, and moves past it. It’s almost like Billy accomplishes what Jack couldn’t. And it took the Overlook burning to the ground for that to happen.
While we’re on the topic of Billy and Alice, one of the things I love about Steve’s characters is he never forces romance where there doesn’t need to be any. While Billy acknowledges the age gap between him and Alice, nothing untoward ever happens between them. There’s obvious love, but never the romantic kind. Steve is one of the few contemporary writers to get this right.
The story ends with Billy killing the guy behind Joel’s hit, getting shot by Marge as he leaves the crime scene (fucking Marge), Alice nursing him back to health, and getting him back to Colorado where they all live happily ever after.
I wish.
I wish I had stopped reading twenty-three pages before the book ended, because the actual end was more realistic, but heartbreaking. In reality, fucking Marge shot Billy in the stomach, and he died of an infection in the back of a Walmart parking lot. Fucking Marge indeed. But this was the way the book should have ended. Needed to end. Anything else would have been unrealistic. But damn, I hated to see Billy go out like that.
There was one Wisconsin reference: after Billy kills Joel Allen, he’s supposed to be transferred to a safe house in De Pere. You know... where Steve lived when he was in a kid.
Other than Gerald Tower, we were also graced with “the world has moved on-” just to remind us that we all follow The Beam.

How would the slashers react to nurse y/n that smokes cigarettes? (if you could add Arthur I would LOVE IT💗)
Arthur Fleck :
Tumblr media
"...I won't tell on you if you don't tell on me ?", you said when you saw Arthur at your favorite hiding spot.
He laughed—the distinctive smell of cigarette filling your senses as he winked cheekily at you.
"Come on, sweetheart. What do you take me for ? A snitch ?"
He even helped you lit your cigarette and you took a deep breath before releasing the smoke into the air.
It felt good.
It helped you relax after a long day and Arthur seemed to understand as he tapped the butt of his cigarette against the edge of one of the windows absent-mindedly.
"...Don't overwork yourself, nurse Y/N."
You smiled and nodded at his kind words.
"Duly noted."
Arthur wouldn't judge and even though he would feel a little concerned—he'd understand.
Everyone had their way to relax—you just happened to have the same destructive one as him.
Freddy Krueger :
Tumblr media
You were out of cigarettes and cursed as you knew only one other person who could procure you some...Freddy.
He was smoking a lot himself and even though you had no idea how he kept finding ways to get some—you were grateful he could for once.
But, when you asked him...he just had to gloat.
Freddy *pretends not to have heard you*: "What's that ? Oh, you better speak up...Didn't hear ya quite well the first time."
You *roll your eyes and extend your hand forward* : "Don't be an idiot. Smoke now."
Context : You had repeated one thousand times to Freddy not to smoke inside and now that you were desperate, he had decided to be a jerk and not give you a cigarette.
Freddy *sneers* : "Yeah nah...Don't think so. 'It's bad for your lungs', remember ?", he teased you before taking a long puff and blowing it in your face.
You couldn't help but cough and he smirked triumphantly, but didn't expect it when you suddenly stole the cigarette he had in his mouth to take a long inhale.
He was shocked for a few seconds before his face split with a large grin.
Freddy : "Ya know...That kinda counts like a kiss."
You rolled your eyes before leaving.
He wouldn't get to you. Not today.
Jack Torrance :
Tumblr media
"Give me a cigarette.", you requested and Jack's eyes widened in surprise, but he immediately denied.
"Me ?! Why...I would never. Don't you know that it's forbidden ?!"
You rolled you eyes at his overdramatic expression of disbelief and shook your head before sighing.
"Yeah yeah...I'm desperate, okay ?."
He was about to protest—but reconsidered when he saw how tired you seemed.
"Fine.", he finally answered you before pulling out his pack and giving you one.
"...But, it's gonna cost ya."
You rolled your eyes again. Of course...
Jack *smoking next to you* : "...So even the great nurse Y/N can have a break, huh ?", he joked and you playfully rolled your eyes at him before taking another puff.
"Sorry to disappoint..."
He shook his head with a small smile.
"Not disappointed. Just surprised you're not a workaholic cyborg from another dimension here to abduct us all."
You snorted before taking another drag of your cigarette with a small enigmatic smile on your lips.
"Who says I'm not ?"
Jack *laughs* : "Point taken."
Jason Voorhees :
Tumblr media
Jason : "Bad...Bad for Y/N..."
Jason won't necessarily act, but he'll give you the disapproving stare.
His ma' used to be a heavy smoker, so he got used to it. But, it doesn't mean he approves.
Jason *stares at you*
You *stare back*
Jason *scrunches his nose in disgust at the cigarette*
You *sigh* : "Look...I know I should quit. But, I just have to relax, okay ? I spent all morning with Freddy. I need it."
Jason *nods understandingly before standing up and walking away*
He may not approve, but he won't stop you.
He knows what it's like and would allow you to smoke from time to time—if it doesn't become a recurrent thing that is.
Then, he'd have to call on Brahms.
And you don't want that. Definitely not.
Brahms Heelshire :
Tumblr media
He's the smoking police.
Smoke kills. And he doesn't want you dead.
Brahms *shakes his head and throws all of your cigarettes away*
You : "NO ! MY PRECIOUS !"
He would actually do a better job at finding the people smoking than the members of staff themselves.
He'd be invested in tracking down everyone with a cigarette at hand.
And since he can travel through the walls, you don't even see or hear him coming.
He'd be deadly and silent. Dawning on you when you least expect it.
You *think you finally found a place to smoke in peace*
Him *waiting in the shadows for his moment to strike*
Michael Myers :
Tumblr media
Michael is a blood hound.
He can smell smoke from a mile away.
You can't hide from him, and you can't fight him either.
He'll get you to quit...eventually. Even if it hurts.
Him *walking away with your cigarettes with you—trying to slow him down by gripping his leg and being dragged behind him*
You : "YOU CAN'T ! MY PRECIOUS ! GIMME !"
Michael *no*
You : "But—"
Michael *no*
You : "LET ME—!"
Michael *glares down at you**NO*
No means no. He won't allow you to kill yourself slowly with the toxins while he could do something about it. There are already a lot of things that could kill you, he doesn't need another to worry about.
Michael *throws them in the toilet and flushes them down the drain*
You *in tears* : "NOOOOO !"
Michael *walks away**mission accomplished*
Norman Bates :
Tumblr media
Norman *waiting for you* : "Where were you ?"
You *jump out of your skin when you see him standing there* : "NORMAN ! Jesus...You scared the living crap out of me."
Norman *unmoved* : "Where were you ?"
You *smiles nervously* : "I was huh...taking a walk ?"
Norman *hums—unconvinced* : "In the middle of the night ?"
You : "...Midnight stroll ?"
Him *sighs before going down the stairs and gently grabbing your chin for you to look at him* : "Y/N...You know I don't like liars."
You *gulp before admitting* : "I...I was smoking."
Norman *sighs in disappointment* : "I know."
You *look away guiltily*
Norman : "...I told you many times over that those things will kill you. But, if you think you know best ? Keep at it, sweetie. You won't be the one crying at the funeral..."
Your eyes widened at his harsh words and you opened your mouth to reply—but he didn't let you.
He wordlessly went back into the house and you blinked twice before looking at the cigarette you had just managed to hide behind your back before Norman arrived.
You threw it away.
Having a disappointed Norman was the worst feeling.
Bo Sinclair :
Tumblr media
You *sigh when you see Bo arriving* : "...What are you doing here, Sinclair ?"
Him *snorts* : "Ain't I allowed outside ?"
You *roll your eyes before taking a puff of your cigarette*
Him *fidgets while staring at the cigarette in your hand* : "...Ain't you gonna offer me one ?"
You *sigh and shake your head* : "It's my spot, Bo. My break. Go get your damn smoke elsewhere. And I ain't giving you my lighter either."
He groaned loudly and you thought he was actually going to give up when he suddenly had a wicked idea and smirked.
"No problem. I'll just find another way."
You were about to ask what he was talking about when you realized just as close he was to you now.
He then grabbed your jaw and opened your mouth so he may inhale the smoke, before you could protest.
You were so shocked—you couldn't move...until he took a step back and walked away nonchalantly with a smug grin on his face.
You *flipping him off* : "BO SINCLAIR, YOU ARE A PIG !"
Him *responds in kind* : "Yeah yeah...Thanks for the smoke, darlin'."

@deathrazed  sent      /      meme.                   ↳   11.   an  entry  discussing  their  fears  and  anxieties.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑  𝟏 ,  𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕.
i  always  thought  this  year  would  be  the  year  i  joined   the  27  club.   i  mean ,  my  entire  adult  life ,  i’d  never  considered  anything  else.  for  twelve  years ,  all  i’ve  known  is  isolation ,  pain ,  rage ,  insanity ,  et  cetera.  i  don’t  remember  what  life  was  life  with  hope.  i  haven’t  been  sober  or  been  around  people  who   wholeheartedly   cared  about  me  for  ten  years.  but . . .  then  i  found  myself  in  frazier ,  i  found  family ,  i  found  everything  i  longed  for  and  yearned  over  for  so  many  years.  no ,  no.  it’d  be  an  injustice  to  dan  to  simply  say  i   found   myself  here.
the  truth  is ,  mom  doesn’t  want  anything  to  do  with  me  after  the  book  release.  i’ve  had  to  accept  the  thing  i  feared  most —   she  doesn’t  love  me.   she  chose  not  to  when  i  was  five  years – old  and  i  held  onto  so  much  hope  for  so  long  that  maybe  she  mourned  dad ,  maybe  her  grief  was  so  much  so  that  seeing  me  was  a  reminder  of  the  love  she  lost.  but  that  was  never  the  case.  if  i  fucked  up  or  she  got  a  call  saying   ariel  did  this ,   or   ariel  did  that ,   i  was  met  with  her  venomous  spite  for  dad’s  family.  using  the  pen  name   ‘ jackie  torrance ’   was  the  final  straw  and  the  reason  to  leave  me  physically ,  just  as  she’d  done  emotionally  when  i  was  only  a   child.
so  i  was  forced  out.  i  stayed  in  the  only  shitty  and  extremely   shady   motel  in  castle  rock  and  drank  my  anxieties  away.  i  isolated  myself  for  so  long ,  so  hesitant  to  let  anyone  in ,  that  when  my  own  flesh  and  blood  disowned  me . . .  i  truly  was   alone.   but  i  remember  in  one  of  mom’s  rants  that  uncle  jack’s  son’s  name  was  daniel.  i  didn’t  know  if  he  was  alive ,  i  didn’t  know  if  he  knew  about  me.  but  i  took  a  shot  in  the  dark  and  looked  him  up.  finding  things  no  one  wants  me  to  find  is  kinda   my  specialty.  and  that’s  exactly  what i  did —   i  found  him  living  in  frazier ,  new  hampshire.  an  hour  away ,  that’s  all.  i  felt  so  many  things  about  this ,  both  good  and  bad.  but  i  decided  that  i  would  take  a  chance.  that’s  how  i   found  myself   in  frazier.
turns  out ,  alcoholism   does   run  in  the  family  and  dan’s  been  sober  for  sixteen  years.  and  i  have  to  get  clean  too.  because  if  i  don’t ,  i  can’t  be  around  him.  i’m  a  risk  to  his  own  well – being  and  dammit ,  i  like  this  whole  aspect  of  having  someone  who  was   never  obligated   to  take  me  in ,  but  did  it  because  maybe  he  had  more  faith  in  me  than  i  do  myself.  i’ve  gone  so  many  years  without  familial  love  that  when  i  found  it  again ,  however  awkward  it  was ,  i  knew  i  had  to  make  this  work.  and  that  meant  putting  the  bottle  down  today.  but  i’m  scared ,  i’m   terrified   actually.
what  if  i’m  too  weak?  what  if  i  crack  and  fall  off  the  wagon?  there’s  so  many  things  i  could  do  wrong.  and  sydney   always   said  i  was  weak.  just  as  weak  as  my  father  for  taking  the  easy  way  out  and  just  as  weak  as  my  mother  for  being  spineless  and  cold.  i  have  a  family  now.  or ,  well ,  i’m  starting  to  piece  one  together.  we  don’t  know  each  other  all  that  well  yet  but  my  dad’s  family?  dan’s  dad’s  family?  they  lied.  they  shut  dan  and  his  mother  out  and  i  always  was  led  to  believe  it  was  because  they  were  these   horrible  people ,  but  it  turns  out  the  torrance  family  that  decided  dan  and  his  mother  didn’t  deserve  their  support  were  the  horrible  people.
all  i  can  think  is   how  well   he’s  done  for  himself  in  spite  of  everything.  both  of  our  fathers  died  when  we  were  five.  we’ve  both  gone  through  shit  we  should’ve  have  had  to.  we’ve  both  had  issues  with  substance  and  alcohol.  it  seems  like  the  only  difference  between  us  is  that  he  had  a  mother  who  gave  the  world  for  him  and  i  didn’t.  but  he’s  giving  me  this  chance  to  change  my  life  and  not  end  up  in  a  body  bag  at  27.
god ,  i  want  to  do  it  so  badly.  i  want  to  get  clean ,  i  want  to  be  sober.  my  career  might  depend  on  it.  my   life   depends  on  it.  i  could  have  family ,  i  could  have  my  career ,  i  could  exist  in  a  world  less  shitty  with  my  cousin  at  my  side.  i  have  that  chance.  i  haven’t  touched  a  drink  today  but  i  crave  it  so ,  so  much.  it’s  like  bad  rash ,  always  nagging  at  you  and  demanding  to  be  treated.  you  don’t  think  about  it  and  there’s  less  of  an  itch  to  give  in.  but  when  you’re  alone  in  your  thoughts  you  remember  it’s  there  and  it   demands   to  be  taken  care  of.  it’s  what  makes  me  think  i’m  too  weak  for  this.  well ,  added  to  the  list  of  many  things.
i  circle  back  around  though ,  sorting  through  the  reasons  this  would  be  good  for  me  and  the  benefits  before  coming  back  to  my  fears  and  the  biggest  fear  i  have  in  getting  sober  is  simple :   what  if  i   disappoint   dan?  if  i  do  become  too  weak ,  if  i  do  cave . . .  will  i  just  disappoint  him  like  i’ve  disappointed  my  mother  all  these  years?  do  i  have  enough  strength  and  courage  to  get  through  this?  i  don’t  know  if  i  do.  but  i  have  to  try ,  don’t  i?  i  have  to  try  and  maybe  i’ll  fail.  i’ll  get  to  that  if  the  time  comes.  but  maybe ,  just  maybe  i’ll  persevere.  maybe  i  can  make  dan   proud   of  me  and  maybe  that  will  give  me  the  oomph  to  be  proud  of  myself.

Bearable | A Reddie Fanfiction
Read it from the beginning
Chapter 6.5
After 8:00 pm Stanley hadn't expected any more customers- Mrs. Earnshaw had told him he could close just after 9:00, which was a mere 30 minutes away. Curled up behind the counter with The Shining held in shaking hands, he was letting the time slip slowly by as the sweet aroma of flora and fauna soothed the otherwise expected fear from his veins. Despite the steadily rising intensity of the book, Stan simply couldn't feel afraid. Even as Jack Torrance ran from bloodthirsty hedge animals, the atmosphere was too pleasant to be spoiled by nerves. Roses on Deane was a beautiful little shop and Stan had discovered a newfound interest in plant life because of it; with only one day of work experience, he was already captivated by the leaves and the petals, the different soils, the surprising amount of knowledge and care it took to nurse and mother a plant. The shop wore dark Jacobean-toned paneling, shelves and shelves of flourishing plants lining each and every one. The lights were dim during the evening, allowing the red-hued artificial ones to feed the plants as needed throughout the course of the night, giving everything the feel as if he were disconnected from the world. If he let his imagination wander, he could convince himself that this building, his building, was floating in a state of suspension, where time had stilled and he could sit, silent, for the rest of eternity.
Ever since he was a child he had used this state of suspension as a getaway. From the ages two to seven, the trigger, the gateway, the one thing that allowed the disconnect had been his nightlight. To Stan, that nightlight in the shape of a star, giving off it's warm gold hue, had meant safety and youth. As he grew, the nightlight passed away and instead his trigger was the space in his closet, where he had stuck small luminescent stars and hidden away whenever anything grew difficult. He'd go through his bird books and drown out the sounds of his parents fighting downstairs in the kitchen. After the closet, the disconnect came with more of a scenario than a place or an object. This scenario was harder to achieve, but when it happened, when he managed to let his mind float away, he had felt safer than ever before. This scenario was the feeling of the Barrens with Eddie and Bill. The endless hum of the Kenduskeag rushing on it's endless course often grabbed hold of his thoughts and carried them away right with it, down towards the ocean and out to sea. It often washed away everything except for his two closest friends. Together, in silence, the three would do nothing but sit and bask in the still nothingness, the timeless sense of being with one another and needing not to worry about school or bullies or the future. Roses on Deane was already emanating the soft, enveloping comfort, the warm tones and safe hues of a gateway. Without needing to debate it, Stanley knew that he would never be harmed here, among the plants and the flowers, surrounded by the rich scent of life and growth.
With his nose in his book, minutes passed though he hardly felt them. To be entirely honest, Stan could have sat there until long past closing time, time both entirely unmoving and racing past him all at once. The only reason he didn't was because he was given a customer- at least, he thought it was a customer until he placed his origami crane, folded out of deep blue gold-star speckled paper and used as a bookmark, into it's place and glanced up to greet them with a smile. That smile grew soft, surprised, almost, at the sight Bill Denbrough rather than anyone else who would have actually been interested in plants.
"H-Hey," He said with a gentle grin, approaching the counter, "Just w-wanted to stop by and say h-hello," Stanley rose from his seat, setting the book aside. He was about to greet Bill right back, maybe ask what he was doing out so late at night, but before he could Bill swiped the book from the countertop and flipped open to where Stan had left off. Reading a few lines with gently squinted eyes (it was difficult for Bill to read in the low-light, especially since he would soon discover he needed low-prescription reading glasses) he was reminded of exactly what had happened up to that point, and returned the book once more. "Great book, hu-huh? It only gets bu-better, trust me." Bill hopped up onto the counter, "So, h-how was the fir-irst day?" Stan had expected the tender atmosphere to wane, or maybe to shatter completely, at the sense of another presence- but Bill's being here only made it better. Stan leaned forwards, forearms rested on the aged wood of the cashiers till, and shrugged his shoulders.
"Slow, but... pleasant." A silence fell over the two like a weighted blanket. They didn't need to speak. If anyone understood Stan's need to retreat into silence, into this other world of the disconnect, it was Bill. He had never judged or laughed or mocked- Eddie hadn't, either, of course, but anyone could tell that he sometimes thought Stan to be... almost silly, in the way that he so often craved the quiet, the slowness. "What are you doing out so late?" At last Stanley voiced his question in a gentle, fuzzy tone, delicate like the soft pink petals of the flowers on display beside his elbow. They stood tall and proud from an intricate blue-glass vase, flourishing in the perfect conditions the shop provided. Just as it promised safety to Stan, it promised it to these plants. Bill scanned around, soaking in the details, relishing in them in the same way as his friend, and then finally responded, his voice just as light,
"Me and Eddie went to Richie's for dinner," He explained, "There aren't any leftovers but I can help you make something for yourself when we get home." Quirking a brow, Stan was met with a soft wave of questions, popping up like small green buds breaking from the dirt.
"You and Eddie? Willingly?" Stan asked with a hum, tilting his head and running his fingers gently through his curls, "And what do you mean 'we'? Are you... staying here?"
"It was... actually Eddie's idea, for dinner. Well... he got the call from Richie. I think he just wanted an excuse to hang up on his mom. She called him," Bill toed off his shoes and pulled his feet up onto the counter to sit cross-legged, in order to better look at Stan. The soft lighting bathed his face in an orange colour, giving him the image of a statue of gold. "It was actually pretty nice. We watched The Birds. I was thinking of how much you would've liked that movie the entire time- horror might not be your favourite, but I think you'd actually laugh," With a chuckle, Bill flashed his handsome grin, "It's stupid. And," he moved on to address Stan's last question, "If you didn't mind, I thought, maybe... I could stick around until you have to close up. I have nothing else planned and I missed you today."
"Oh," Stan straightened up, clasping his hands together, "I," He struggled for the words, something he rarely did, and then swallowed the lump in his throat and recomposed himself, "That would be nice, I think. If you really don't mind." Joining Bill on the counter, Stan removed his own shoes. Now, the two were sitting facing one another, legs crossed. It was no secret, at least to himself, that he had a crush on Bill. He had known it for years now- Bill was... perfect, in every form of the word. He was handsome and smart, and he had an extroverted self-assurance that Stan envied more than anything; but what Stan had really fallen for was the kindness, the endless fields of it. Bill was always kind. It amazed Stanley sometimes. There was music in the shop, so silent that he had hardly noticed it until now, in the total stillness. Mrs. Earnshaw enjoyed classical. He enjoyed classical all the same. "Hey, Bill?" Stan asked, his hands clasped in his lap. Bill met his gaze with his own, steady, steady.
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever... miss Derry? I know we haven't been gone for long, but..." Stan shrugged. He suddenly felt very silly for even asking. Again, Bill chuckled, a low sound that was anything but mocking. It was almost sad, the timbre of it, and Stan realized he wanted to take Bill's hand. He didn't.
"Yeah, I do."
"What do you miss most?" For a moment, Bill pondered, and then he said,
"The Barrens." Stan agreed with a small nod. Silence again, warm and comfortable. "What about you?"
"Probably the river. Sitting in the sunlight, surrounded by the nature and the water, even though it didn't always smell the best." As if having read his thoughts, Bill reached forwards and took both of Stan's hands in his. Bill's blue eyes were the same shade as the sky above the Barren's treetops. He didn't have to explain what he meant when he spoke,
"We'll find a new place like that here, I promise. It'll happen, soon, I'm sure. A new place where we can all just... sit. And be. Maybe a place where everyone else can be with us, too." Stan felt that this moment, right now, with his hands in Bill's, their faces inches apart- he felt like this moment was more important than it seemed to be on the surface. Like there was more to it than just a promise between friends. It felt almost like the day before, in Portland Authentic with Richie, with Ben, with Mike and Eddie and Beverly behind the counter. Something similar yet drastically different from the disconnect weighed on his shoulders, something else that was comforting but in an entirely different way. The disconnection comforted him because he felt nothing- this new weight, the overbearing presence he had felt for no more than a moment, had been like that of a mothers love. For the briefest moment the solidity fell out from under him and he really was floating- but then, he was right back there with Bill in front of him and his whole entire future stretching wide and endless like the oceans led to by the Kenduskeag.

Movies About Writers: 20 Great Examples Of Authors In Cinema
Tumblr media
Best movies about writing: our 20 picks Let’s dive into our 20 picks.
We’ve chosen movies from different genres and ages. Our main criteria is what we already discussed. These movies about famous writers—or fictional ones—take you on a journey. Every movie will teach you something.
1. An Angel at My Table – Jane Campion This 1990 biography of Janet Frame is among Jane Campion’s earliest work. It’s filled with empathy among its three main stages. You’ll see how Janet goes through a troublesome childhood. The film takes you through an erroneous schizophrenia diagnosis, leading to tortuous therapy. However, her work literally saves her, much to our heart’s content.
2. Adaptation – Spike Jonze Jonze’s 2002 amazing comedy has Charlie Kaufman as the main character. Played by Nicolas Cage, he’s working to adapt The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean’s. It deals with topics like writer’s block and drug usage. It’s a crazy tale—definitely one of the best roles by Cage.
3. Providence – Alain Resnais 1977’s Providence is a character study of a novelist’s mind. It’s an astonishing movie about writing at a psychological level. It’s an impressive fim detailing how real-life merges with the work of a writer.
4. Bright Star – Jane Campion If you’re a John Keats reader, this 2009 movie is for you. Jane Campion’s second film on this list is just as amazing as our first entry. Bright Star is more about the romance between Keats and Fanny Brawne. Honestly, it’s one of the sweetest films you’ll ever watch.
5. The Hours – Stephen Daldry Nicole Kidman is simply stunning in this 2002 title. Playing Virginia Woolf, it’s a slow-paced drama that’ll keep you hooked until it ends. It’s a powerful trip into Woolf’s mind as she prepares to meet her fate in the River Ouse.
6. Before Night Falls – Julian Schnabel Schnabel’s 2000 film about Reinaldo Arenas definitely earned its Academy Award nomination. It takes viewers into the shoes of the Cuban writer, but it’s not pretty. It’s a beautiful but infuriating movie about homophobia and political tensions in the 70’s.
7. Misery – Rob Reiner Of course, we can’t leave out this 1990 pioneer of the psychological thriller genre. If you haven’t seen it, you need to stop reading and do it. Kathy Bates kills this movie as the kidnapper of a famous writer. It’s a mind-blowing movie about writing and addiction that everyone should see at least once.
8. The Motorcycle Diaries – Walter Salles Somewhat similar to Schnable’s film, this one is also very political. However, it’s a great character study of Che Guevara before his uprising. It’s a retelling of his diary entries while he was still studying medicine. He wrote these as he travelled with his best friend around South America. It details how he grew his political ideals.
9. Shakespeare In Love – John Madden If you want light-hearted films about writers, this 1998 title is a must-watch. It details how Shakespeare got his inspiration for some of his greatest work. It’s hilarious while still winning over your heart.
10. The Shining – Stanley Kubrick We’re back with Stephen King now. Horror movies about writers aren’t too common. However, 1980’s The Shining more than makes up for it. It pictures the quick descent into madness for Jack Torrance. It quickly goes from a creepy movie about writer’s block to a spiral of frantic and horrific scenes, one after the other.
11. Reprise – Joachim Trier The 2006 film, Reprise, is a lovely story about success, struggle, and friendship. It takes unexpected twists and turns. You can’t really expect what’s about to throw at you. It’s also the perfect French new wave experience.
12. The World According To Garp – George Roy Hill Any film with Robin Williams is a great experience. This 1982 movie is one of the best films about writers if you’re looking for a twist. We’ll just say Garp is the main character. He’s a novelist. But, his mother is the one finding success. It’s also an interesting look into gender roles released almost four decades ago.
13. Midnight in Paris – Woody Allen Despite how you might feel about Allen, this 2011 film is great. It features Owen Wilson at its charmest. It’s also very nostalgic, and sometimes hilarious, in all the right ways. If you’re an aspiring writer, it might become one of your favorite movies.
14. Kill Your Darlings – John Krokidas Daniel Radcliffe spearheads this 2013 drama, which is a good sign. This film is interesting because it depicts incredibly successful artists. Yet, the plot is elsewhere. The main story follows a murder mystery. It’s perfect if you’re looking for twists and intricate plots.
15. The Royal Tenenbaums – Wes Anderson We have another film with Owen Wilson. Combined with Gwyneth Paltrow, they depict a depressed family. It’s hardly as sad as it sounds, though. Wilson’s character is an amazing parody of masculinity, and the film will make you smile often. The duo is simply perfect here.
16. The Pillow Book – Peter Greenaway This 1996 is actually about one of the oldest records of a “book.” It depicts a deep story about obsession, poetry, writing, and lust. It builds on Sei Shonagon’s (the original author) ideas to create one of the craziest art films ever.
17. Sylvia – Christine Jeffs Sylvia is one of the most interesting movies about writers. It’s basically the only true biopic, yet they failed to get her poetry’s rights. As is, it’s a beautiful film with a great mood. It might not be for everyone, but Plath readers should definitely give it a chance.
18. My Brilliant Career – Gillian Armstrong This 1979 film plays a surprising twist on the love triangle trope. The protagonist is a woman struggling to choose between two men. However, she goes for a much more promising third option. You just have to see the rest to find out more.
19. Sunset Boulevard – Billy Wilder We just had to include this 50’s film since noir and writers go hand-in-hand. It tells the tale of a faded star and an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis. They end up together thanks to mere promises of stardom. That said, the film does begin with Gillis’ dead body. Why is it there? You’ll have to find out.
20. Certified Copy – Abbas Kiarostami If you enjoy pseudo-fourth-wall-breaking meta-commentary, then this film is for you. The film kicks off by telling us that authenticity in art is irrelevant. From there, it’s a unique experience you simply need to watch.
HERE IS ANOTHER LIST
I would also add:
21. Can You Ever Forgive Me? -  Marielle Heller  Melissa McCarthy stars in this  true story of writer Lee Israel, who, despite being an accomplished author, earned the legacy of “forger” after embarking on a side career of writing fake letters from literary figures and selling them to collectors. The script is based on Israel’s memoir of the same name, and the story picks up in 1991, when she has fallen on hard times both financially and professionally. Through the forgeries, Israel finds a new way to both make money and restore a sense of pride in her work.
