#i headcanon yaz as bi

It's almost 7 in the morning after I woke up at midnight, and I have a lot on this weekend so I may be promising too much, but
I think with the end of Thirteen's run on Doctor Who, I'm finally going to knuckle down and write Yaz's Extraordinarily Bisexual Playlist.
The goal of it is to explore potential romantic feelings with Ryan, Dan, The Doctor and an OC (who may not be an OC, but a canon-compliant character), paired with a story about grand larceny and deceit, set to a Spotify algorithm that's way out of whack for Yaz's liking but which begins to sync up with her life as she changes over time.
It's a real-world AU, Ryan and Graham run an activity centre for low-income youths and Yaz uses what standing she has on the police force to help them secure better funding and better accommodate the centre in the community. Through that, she meets Dan and the Doctor at a support group held at the centre, and the plan is for the different relationship vibes to ebb and flow over the course of in-story months. Yaz shares a tender moment with Ryan at a Bonfire Night picnic, she goes to dinner with Dan for Valentine's Day. The Doctor pops up all over the place in her dark blue Honda Accord, and Yaz has a great time whenever she does.
Endgame couple should be pretty obvious if you know my AO3 account - which I'm almost certain you don't - and with the title referring to a playlist, it's also going to be a songfic-lite with lyrics opening and closing each chapter. Some songs I wanna use are:
1000 Times - Sara Bareilles ("kiss me goodnight, like a good friend might")
Gray or Blue - Jaymay ("Your eyes are either gray or blue, I'm never close enough to say")
Subway Song - Julianne Zachirou ("Sway left, sway right, slow-dancing in the middle of the subway") + others!
I'm thinking 24 chapters if I can help it.

So I'm thinking about the Fourteenth Doctor, and the bi-generation, and how he may have come to an end. What happened to him after those years he spent with Donna and her family, and with so many other friends on Earth (oh, I am headcanon-ing, friends), existing day-to-day and beginning to heal? After he learned how to let himself be loved, and shown compassion, and forgiven—and, eventually, learned to love, forgive, and care for himself? What happened when, at the end of this journey, his regeneration energy (I assume?) traveled back (in some hand-wavey fashion) to become the Fifteenth Doctor, who is born out of that love and forgiveness and compassion and is ready to move forward in the universe?
Fourteen becomes Fifteen—but what about the TARDIS?
Tumblr media
Fourteen's TARDIS was created for the same reason Fourteen was: they needed to slow down, to be gentle. They needed to find a home that wasn't moving at the speed of light. So maybe this TARDIS is a little gentler, too. Maybe she's a little more careful of herself and her charges.
When Fourteen takes Rose to Mars, they land right where they're supposed to, and Rose sees wonders. Nothing bad happens, and they return home five minutes after they left.
When Shaun wants to see a football match from 1988, he opens the TARDIS door and she takes him right there, flying all by herself, to Fourteen's chagrin.
When Fourteen takes Mel to New York, they have adventures that don't involve running, or hiding, or screaming with anything but laughter. When Fourteen takes Jo, Ace, and Tegan to the Jurassic era, the only danger he faces is when he makes an age joke.
When, after Sarah Jane dies (yeeeears in the future, tyvm), Fourteen takes Luke, Maria, Clyde, and Rani to see Florana—the place he promised to take Sarah Jane all those years ago—the TARDIS chooses the safest, most beautiful moment in time for them to honor her memory.
When Donna and Martha and Yaz and Shirley sneak in for a joyride, they have the time of their lives, and the TARDIS covers for them. (Fourteen suspects, but can't prove it.)
When Fourteen is struggling, and chafing at life on Earth, and just needs to run, to fix things, to solve puzzles, to get away from the day-to-day of it all, the TARDIS lets him. She takes him so many places he's never been before, and they're all beautiful and wild and remind him what he loves about the universe.
(He tries, a few times, to go places that might bring him pain, and she gently refuses.)
And every now and then, someone will try to get in. This TARDIS doesn't have a key; she just opens to those in her care, and refuses entry to those she doesn't trust. She is safe, and so are they.
When Donna's in her eighties and can't get around as easily, the TARDIS takes her where she can manage. When Rose is overwhelmed with the pain of the world, the TARDIS takes her to places where none of that pain exists, and lets her stay as long as she needs to.
They live magnificent lives, and the TARDIS takes care of them. And then, at the end of it, Fourteen is ready for what comes next, and he becomes Fifteen. There's only one Doctor again.
But this TARDIS...
I think she stays, right in the corner of that yard. She leaves and then lands so precisely that roots and ivy grow over her. The Doctor is gone, and eventually Mel and Sarah Jane and Jo and Donna and Martha and everyone that traveled with the Doctor once upon a time in a different TARDIS are gone too.
But Rose is still there. Luke, Maria, Rani, and Clyde are still there. Their families, their kids. The TARDIS opens to them, and shows them the universe. She takes them only where she chooses to, and it's always exactly where they need to go.
She always takes them home, to the garden that once belonged to Donna Noble.
The Doctor finds new companions. Some of them come home to Earth after awhile, but they're not stuck dreaming of the universe. You showed me the furthest reaches of the galaxy, Sarah Jane said. You showed me supernovas, intergalactic battles, and then you just dropped me back on Earth. How could anything compare to that? We get a taste of that splendor, but then we have to go back.
These new companions, they return to Earth and their lives there, but every now and then, they swing by that old house that the Noble family has lived in for generations. They say hello to this old/new box, and she invites them in.
They don't have to say goodbye to the universe. She's right there in Chiswick, waiting for them.
And sometimes—on rare occasions, when they need it, or when he (or she, or they) does—she takes them to the Doctor.

Do you know if Sammy has a canon sexuality? Obviously she's sapphic but like does she have a specific identity? If not, can you say what your headcanon would be?
I don't think the writers really gave any of the campers specific romantic preferences. In an earlier draft of Yaz's coming out episode I think she was more clearly implied to be bi, but that's about it. While on the show I did latch onto the headcanon/soft canon of Yaz being bi (because I'm also bi as well as demi so being unsure of labels was very relatable to me). As for Sammy, she's more of a mystery to me! I think whatever you read into characters and headcanon yourself is completely valid.

Hi what Do you think of bi!Clara? Do you think its canon and what are your headcanons for (canon or Campervan/any of your other AUs) Clara?
Pretty sure Clara is bi in canon, right? And ngl, anon, I don't really think about Clara all that much (she's cool, but not my favourite companion). I've mostly only really thought about her in redacted!au, where she's Koschei's ex boss and also like, his only friend lol. They meet up once a month for coffee because she says that if she didn't and then he died somewhere or went missing, then no one would notice. She's also his emergency contact. I do know that he told her about John/The Doctor from when they were kids, though, which is interesting.
Canon wise, I have a softspot for spyclara as a ship - I haven't read much of it but I think that Clara and Missy/The Master have a really interesting dynamic compared to other companion/master duos (although Yaz and the Master are also interesting, especially Yaz and the Master!Doctor). Clara's just the right amount of unhinged for her to be really interesting when paired with the Master - especially Missy or Dhawan, who are also unhinged. I also think the Master could actually talk to Clara about the Doctor and she would actually be more objective (or, maybe, more open to hearing about the less than nice sides of the Doctor) than some of the other companions sksksks, which is interesting to me.

Canon characters in my LGBT headcanons
So I wanted to do this, and I have some of the characters from tv shows and movies in my own Lgbtq headcanons sexualities (Even if some of them are canon though).

That was SO FUCKING GOOD. I really, really enjoyed that.
Let’s get the big one out of the way: Yaz is now officially, canonically, explicitly, undeniably queer!! (Although her exact identity is up for debate; I lean towards seeing her as bi, but lesbian or pan or any other sapphic identity Yaz headcanons are cool too.) Just in case there was any doubt left, although, frankly, you’d have a hard time not seeing it by now anyway.
I did say that I thought we would get, at the very least, a love confession from Yaz before this era was out. I love being right.
The exact nature of the Doctor’s feelings is still somewhat ambiguous, but they’re pretty heavily implying that her feelings for Yaz are just as romantic as Yaz’s feelings are for her, I think (the way she was looking at Yaz while they watched the fireworks...). I think they might just leave the Doctor’s feelings implicit, given there’s only two more specials, but who knows.
I liked Sarah and Nick. Sarah in particular was great, I would LOVE to see her come back someday as a proper companion.
I do agree with some of the complaints I’ve seen that the writing for Nick was a bit... awkward, and at times made him come off a bit more as “creepy” than as “socially awkward man with a crush”. But those times were few enough that I can simply brush them off as writing errors and still like him overall! It helps that his actor was good. Also, he’s another one for the list of Doctor Who characters I totally headcanon as autistic.
Speaking of autism, the Doctor exhibited some rather autistic body language tonight, didn’t she? I don’t remember the exact scene that really struck me, I think it was around the time she gave the “you beautiful humans” speech, I just remember there was this one scene that I just couldn’t stop watching her body language because it reminded me so much of myself. I’ll share what it is whenever I get round to rewatching the episode, haha. (Yeah yeah yeah I know the Doctor’s an alien and a lot of people don’t like autistic-coded aliens and all that. But personally, I love autistic-coded aliens, so I am always very happy to see the Doctor showing autistic traits.)
Uh. I think I had more thoughts on this episode, but I got kind of sidetracked there. But yeah, at any rate, I also just loved that Doctor speech so there was that. I don’t think Whittaker’s really had a proper Iconic Doctor Speech moment before, has she? I think tonight’s episode finally gave her that moment.
The next special looks like a lot of fun too! I haven’t seen any classic Who (I know, I know... I’ll get round to it someday!), so the fandom excitement about the Sea Devils doesn’t really mean much to me. But it looks good, at any rate. And what DOES excite me about the special is that it has Crystal Yu, probably best known to many of my followers as the actress who played Lily Chao in Casualty, in it. So I’m hyped to see her in DW. :D

Do you think Yas is bisexual, multisexual or a lesbian? Whatever sort of queer identity she has, Yas is awesome. You know I looked at a blog post one time that accused Doctor Who, before 13’s debut season of not having a lot of South Asian individuals and other Asian people despite them being a large minority in Britain. I am so glad for Yas
Personally I headcanon her as gay, but it's very open for interpretation. If you think she's bi or pan, you can point to her mom asking her if she's dating both Thirteen and Ryan. If you think she's gay, you can point to her not being at all impressed with Jack despite his established ability to charm almost anyone he comes into contact with. Whatever your theory, there's evidence to back it up. That's just the vibe I get, so no shade on anyone with a different interpretation.
I've seen that mentioned before! Yaz is the first Asian main character in the show's sixty-year history. Not just the first South Asian one, the first one of any Asian ethnicity. That's part of why I say it's objectively untrue that the era didn't add anything to the show. Not liking a writing decision or even a handful of writing decisions doesn't make it okay to erase that.

rose martha and nine for the ask meme!
thank you… excellent taste. i already did nine so here’s rose and martha
Rose:
Sexuality Headcanon: bi but i also feel like. she’s just in love with the doctor and the gender is not relevant
Gender Headcanon: woman honestly i usually think of her as cis but i also think she could be trans 🤔 of course this applies to every character but you know. maybe everyone is just trans 🤔
A ship I have with said character: OBVIOUSLY doctor/rose. any doctor but ten and thirteen have a special place in my heart as rose ships
A BROTP I have with said character: honestly any other companion but especially yaz. they’re very similar and i want them to be friends
A NOTP I have with said character: uhhh i don’t know i feel like she needed to break up with mickey sooner but i don’t feel so strongly as to call it a NOTP, i more just think that relationship was written in a way that normalized a lot of unhealthy dynamics and the writers didn’t do much to unpack that. again i haven’t seen anything too egregious although everything exists somewhere on ao3
A random headcanon: she definitely Did Not look into the heart of the tardis and come out physically unscathed. like she’s definitely immortal now and like VERY connected to the tardis they’re best friends. OH maybe that’s a BROTP ❤️
General Opinion over said character: i love her. light of my life. is this just because she was the first character i saw in the show and my 13-year-old self imprinted on her like a baby bird? maybe so. and yet here we are today living in a world where people who have never seen doctor who know about rose tyler because of me
Martha:
Sexuality Headcanon: hmmm definitely bi. i feel like rtd era has a lot of bi energy.
Gender Headcanon: cis woman
A ship I have with said character: okay we’re going deep for this one stay with me. i have for YEARS shipped her with river but i’ve never finished ONE FIC for it. maybe it is not meant to be. and yet…
A BROTP I have with said character: if the doctor was nicer to her they would be such cute friends :( but nooooo i will have to say donna… or rose like. in s4. honestly similar to rose i would like to see her being friends with any companion. OR like a later doctor after some time has passed for both of them
A NOTP I have with said character: the doctor literally does not deserve her :( i get it you’re grieving but be NICE!
A random headcanon: ohhh well i like to think about her finishing her medical degree after she leaves, pretty sure that’s just canon though(?). but like i think she lives a really nice life on earth being a doctor and working for UNIT and all that. i wonder if she ever introduces herself like “i’m the doctor” just for a laugh
General Opinion over said character: i love her and like when i was first watching age 13 my brothers and i were NOT impressed by the idea of anyone replacing rose, like we read a new name in the netflix episode descriptions and were like >:( sight unseen, so poor martha had a lot to live up to and she lived up to it!!! she is so cool. also like the doctor should not have treated her like that But watching her be able to say “i deserve better” and walk out was like. formative moments for adolescent me.

a few headcanons about how i imagine the sexuality of the marauders era characters (+ a little of dating history on some of them) bc i'm bored
- remus: he's TOTALLY a bi disaster and i know that bc i'm a bi disaster too and we spot each other miles away. he had a preference for boys. sirius was the love of his life and he never really got over him, but he loved grant (from the great fanfic atyd pls read it) and tonks in his own way.
- sirius: i know a lot of people see him as gay and that's okay but in my hc he's pan, i totally see him not caring about gender at all, only about personality. he dated a few people before wolfstar happened but remus was the only person he ever loved.
- james: straight but the most supportful and enthusiastic friend ever; he would hex anyone who dared to say shit about remus and sirius and in modern days he would go to gay pride parades with them, and be absolutely proud of harry's bisexuality (james is alive with lily thank you very much)
- lily: bi; her first girl crush was emmeline and they dated sometime around fourth and fifth year
- peter: straight; he dated dorcas for a short time when they were young and he was very scared of voldemort when she died
- marlene: a badass lesbian; her first crush was mary, but they never became a thing; her first love was dorcas, then yaz (again from atyd i'm serious pls read it)
- dorcas: adorable pansexual; she thought marlene was cute since the first time they met. marlene always acted like "don't call me cute" but secretly loved it
- mary: bi; she dated a lot of very different people, including sirius, emmeline and a few drunk kisses with lily. she ended up marrying a muggle guy from her neighbourhood. also, when she was with sirius she already noticed the signs of him being into remus, even before himself knew it
- emmeline: bi; she dated sirius but they were terrible together, and had a on and off relationship with lily but eventually they separated
- regulus: gayyy but i think he never really accepted it because of his family and the other purebloods on slytherin at the time
- fabian prewett: gay and in love with caradoc dearborn
- gideon prewett: straight and scared of commitment
- caradoc dearborn: bi and in love with fabian
- frank longbottom: pan and in love with alice
- alice fortescue/longbottom: unlabeled and in love with frank
that's it thank you

Let Graham have a bi flag.
And let Graham and Yaz bond over being bisexuals.
(BTW Grace knew Graham was bi because I have a headcanon that they watched like a Samuel L Jackson film together and Graham just muttered something very gay and Grace heard it and they stared at one another which ended with Graham going. “I’m bi.” and Grace going. “So am I.”)
- Yaz asks the Doctor to take them to Pride. Very slight Thasmin. -
"Ryan?" Yaz blinks in wonderment. "Where did you get the sunhat from?"
Ryan turns around, grinning. "Dunno, some guy gave it to me when he called me handsome."
"I love a hat," The Doctor beams. Smile growing even wider when Ryan takes his hat off and places it on her head.
"You can have it, Doctor," Ryan nods, before frowning and looking at the pair of them. "Have you seen Graham?"
"He's not with you?" The Doctor asks with slight worry.
"I lost him a while back now," Ryan confesses. "The crowd got pretty big, he was there one moment and gone the next, you know what he's like." He shrugs. "You take your eyes off him for a second, and in that second he's got distracted by something."
"Do you know where it was?" Yaz probes, metaphorical police hat slipping on.
"What?"
"The last place you saw him, Ryan." Yaz rolls her eyes. "What did you think I was asking?"
"Uh," Ryan mumbles, turning on the spot and glancing around. "It was by a woman handing out packages of Pride flags to people."
"A woman?"
Ryan turns and faces Yaz. "I remember her; she probably was the last one to see him."
Yaz gestures for Ryan to lead the way through the crowd, people parting the way like fish.
"There she is," Ryan points her out. He makes his way over with Yaz and the Doctor following behind. "Excuse me-"
The woman turns around, her smile reaching her eyes as she glances across the three of them. There's a flash, brief as it may be when she realises that none of them has a flag. "Did you want one?" She gestures to her Satchel. "I have pretty much everything in here that you would need-"
"Oh, no thank you," The Doctor says, stepping forward. "We were just wondering if you saw our friend?"
The woman blinks, standing straighter with a focused look on her face. "I've seen a lot of people today, can you describe them? It would help me if you could."
Yaz comes forth. "He's a bit shorter than Ryan here, older as well, late fifties, got a brown leather jacket on."
Her eyes widen, and she nods. "I've seen him." She smiles. "Kind man, slightly nervous when he asked-
"You did?" Ryan says, not meaning to cut her off, but doing so anyway. "Did he say where he was going?"
"Mentioned something about getting food after speaking to me," The woman informs them. "The stands are over there." She gestures towards her right.
Ryan laughs with amusement. "Honestly, why didn't we go and check the food stands first?" He asks with disbelief. "That should've been our first call." He says, turning and marching away.
Yaz sighs and laughs after Ryan before turning back to the woman again. "Sorry about him, it's his grandad we're looking for." She explains. "And thank you; you've been a great help!"
"My pleasure."
Yaz smiles at her before turning and following after Ryan and the Doctor. Once again their focused steps split the crowd and soon enough they're standing around the pop-up stands, eyes searching for the telltale brown leather jacket and finding nothing. "He could be anywhere."
The Doctor scrunches her face. "Too many people around to get an exact location on him with the sonic."
"What do we do then?"
"The tried and tested option?" Yaz suggests with a shrug. "I'll go this way, and you two go in the opposite direction."
"Sounds good-"
"Meet back up here in ten minutes?" The Doctor orders before turning away from them. "With or without him." She calls out over her shoulder.
Ryan gives Yaz a nod, and she watches him as he walks away. "Where would Graham go?" She murmurs to herself, feet taking her away from the spot.
She glances around, looking for the brown leather. It's difficult though, shirts and jackets covered by flags. "Graham?" Yaz calls out, hopeful that her voice can break over the crowd.
"Yaz?" A voice says from behind her. "What are you yelling my name for?"
Yaz turns and smiles when she spots Graham, one hand holding an ice cream. "There you are, we couldn't find-" She frowns, spotting the fabric draped around his shoulders. "What is that?"
Graham catches where she's looking, shifting on his feet. "A woman was handing them out, and I wanted one."
"Do you know what it means?" Yaz asks.
"What?"
"It's a bi flag, Graham," Yaz informs him, feeling awkward for pointing it out. "For people who identify as bise-"
"I know what it is, Yaz," Graham interjects in a neutral tone, but she picks up a hint of panic buried within it. "I wouldn't be wearing it if I didn't know what it was."
Yaz blinks at Graham, her brain slowly catching on to what Graham is saying, or better yet, telling her. "You're- Oh!"
"Yeah," Graham murmurs, rubbing the back of his head with his free hand. "I don't make a habit of telling people, mind, so don't go blurting this out to any old body."
"I wouldn't tell anyone, Graham," Yaz reassures. "You can trust me on that."
"Good, then."
"Are you planning on wearing that when you meet up with Ryan and the Doctor?"
"I guess," Graham shrugs. "I expect Ryan will have a bookful load of questions though, stuff I don't necessarily want to answer, but probably will have to."
Yaz nods as she steps forward, arm linking in Graham's and causing the man to look at her with a quirked eyebrow. "Think that flag is big enough for the pair of us?" Graham blinks in surprise at Yaz. "Come on, Graham, you telling me you never realised?"
"I mean," Graham starts while smirking slightly at her. "I wasn't ever gonna ask you, but I saw the way you looked at the Doc."
"That obvious?"
"Very much so," Graham retorts with a smile. "You're as subtle as a brick to the face, cockle."

Long thasmin (mostly Yaz) rambles under the cut. I have a lot of feelings about it, but that’s nothing new.
tl;dr Yaz is queer and I really hope this is where they actually plan on going with it.
I wish we knew if they’re planning on making Yaz canonically queer. If they are, I’m so interested in where she’s at in terms of her relationship with her identity. We’ve gotten a glimpse into her past, but there’s still so much we don’t know, like why she was bullied and what prompted her to run off. She’s clearly had to pull herself out of a very dark place, yet we hardly know any details about what bought her there (funny how that sounds exactly like the Doctor).
I know a lot of people are of the belief that Najia is the captain of the thasmin ship, but I’ve personally never felt that way. To me, she doesn’t look or sound thrilled by the concept of Yaz seeing the Doctor when she asks about it. And Yaz doesn’t seem very comfortable with the question. She initially responds with a disgruntled, “Not now!” and punctuates the exchange with, “Please, can we not have this conversation now? And not in front of [Robertson].” And between those lines, neither she nor the Doctor give Najia a clear answer.
This is just my take and it could very well be wrong, but the fact that Yaz expresses multiple times that she doesn’t want to talk about it tells me that a conversation of this nature has happened before. And judging by the tension between them, it probably didn’t go very smoothly.
I mean, nothing about this exchange looked or sounded comfortable to me:
Tumblr media
It’s notably different from how Najia and Yaz interact later when the same question is asked about her and Ryan. The two respond with an immediate and definitive, “No.” Najia seems disappointed by their answer, yet she doesn’t press the topic and the story moves forward. This exchange ends up being significantly shorter than the first, solely because Najia accepted their answer the first time around.
Does anyone smell some heteronormativity in the air? Queer people are painfully familiar with having to spend time explaining their identity to others. It’s a conversation we’re forced to have over and over throughout our lives. That definitely sounds like an experience Yaz can relate to.
Ryan and Yaz look uncomfortable when she asks (which is understandable), but Najia looks much happier about the concept and disappointed when she finds out they aren’t dating:
Tumblr media
And even the staging is interesting. Najia is positioned between Yaz and Ryan in the second scene, as opposed to being placed next to Yaz with a desk between them and the Doctor. When she’s talking to Yaz and Ryan, she’s on the same level as them and sounds friendlier. But when she’s talking to the Doctor, Yaz is sitting while she stands and assumes a more authoritative position/tone.
Sure, the Doctor is a stranger and Ryan is a childhood friend, but the Doctor was so nice to Najia when she met her. As far as I can remember, she never gave her a solid reason to be suspicious. If anything, she was too nice, given the way Najia reacts to the hug and compliment about her daughter, then proceeds to distance herself. She’s not Yaz’s mum, she’s Najia. And at the end of the episode, she continues to press Yaz about the Doctor, but never mentions Ryan again.
We know that there’s been a strain on her home life at some point after hearing her conversation with that officer, because she mentions Yaz’s parents not understanding her (not getting “what’s up”). As they they talk, the officer mentions Yaz wanting to run away from everyone, including herself. In trying to convince her that these feelings will pass, she essentially tells her there’s something good waiting on the other side if she runs toward herself instead—which is something queer people really need to hear.
It’s obviously not the only factor, and like I said, I could be wrong but...this sure does look like something that would make a person run from who they are:
Tumblr media
After all, Yaz did promise her mom she would tell her about the Doctor when she got back from picking up bread, then proceeded to run off with her. As far as we know, Najia is still in the dark about their relationship—whatever that happens to be.
Aside from that, Yaz is the only one in the fam who hasn’t had any romantic interactions outside of the Doctor and the Master. I guess we could also count Ryan (I’m not against it because I headcanon her as bi) but I genuinely get more of a sibling vibe from them. Regardless, we all know the Master cozied up to Yaz because she fits the mold of who the Doctor has traveled with in the past. I can’t speak to classic who, but from Nine and on, the Doctor’s got a type and we all know it, including the Master.
Then we have all of the parallels between thasmin and various couples in the show. I’m not even going to begin to list them, but the crumbs are abundant and delicious. That gay cop and astronaut? I mean, come on.
On top of all that, the one really Yaz centric episode we’ve had dealt with themes of prejudice and a love within her own family that broke away from societal norms. Like, shit. The Doctor married Prem and Umbreen in a small, private ceremony because she was the only one who was willing to look past their religions. And because this was a relationship that went unknown to Yaz (for a vastly different reason, but still), even she wasn’t happy with the Doctor for agreeing to it at first.
Though private, their marriage was an act of rebellion against outside forces. And who did Umbreen specifically have tension with about the concept of marrying someone who was Hindu? Her mother. But she and Prem even created a new wedding tradition that celebrated their own love by tying their hands with the rope that fell in the water. “Now it can be our thing, if we want it to be,” Umbreen said.
(This is a side note, but if Najia truly isn’t chill about Yaz being queer, I really want to see Umbreen tell her about Prem. I want to hear her recount her experiences with her own love being scrutinized and challenged. I think it would be a cool way for Najia to learn who the Doctor really is, and just how much of a positive impact she and Yaz have made on her life already.)
Yaz struggled in Demons of the Punjab because everything she believed to be true about Umbreen’s life (and her own by extension) turned out to be so different from what she expected. But what she witnessed in that episode helped her understand that people deserve to share their experiences on their own terms. If that doesn’t translate into a narrative about Yaz’s own identity, I don’t know what will.
In season 12, Yaz spent this entire time focusing on the Doctor, but it was executed in a way that furthered her own development. Yaz clearly has feelings for her, but now we have a better understanding of what traveling with the Doctor means to her as a whole. Yaz idolizes her, constantly thinks about what she would say or do. She wants to impress her, prove herself capable of solving problems and saving people. In the process of doing this, she’s grown more confident in her own abilities, independently breathing hope and action into situations that feel paralyzing and hopeless. This is exactly what Yaz has wanted all along, with or without the Doctor. Yaz wants to matter and she wants to do work that matters. The Doctor gives her this. She tells her they can’t have a universe without her. She gives her the chance to make an impact in a way she doesn’t feel like she can at home.
I think their relationship could serve as such a wonderful catalyst for Yaz to step into her own identity and eventually find her place without needing the Doctor. Like Graham said, she doesn’t have a time machine or a sonic, but she’s doing the whole human race proud. Yaz deserves a “You were fantastic. And know what? So was I” moment.
I love thasmin as much as the next person, but I’m honestly less interested in seeing her feelings reciprocated by the Doctor than I am in witnessing Yaz’s journey to confront her feelings in the first place. I want to see or hear her express them in a way that leaves no room for doubt. Everything feels so blatantly intentional at this point, but there’s still just enough ambiguity for me to worry that they’re not going to follow through. They’ve planted all these wonderful little seeds along the way, it would be such a disservice to all fans (not just queer fans) if we never get to see them bloom.

look, while it may not be absolutely perfect, Doctor Who has always (since its revival) handled lgbt+ representation much better than most other shows. yes, there's quite a significant trope of "Bury your gays" here and there (looking at you chibnall), but the fact that for 15 years, the show has had lgbt+ representation here and there, is just incredible.
Doctor Who is an amazingly inclusive show. we've had gay characters, trans characters, bi characters, lesbian characters, pan characters, ace characters, loads of characters from throughout the spectrum and it's amazing. how many other shows have done that? no, the representation isn't perfect, it will never be truly perfect. there'll always be that one thing someone said or the fact that most lgbt+ characters aren't often main characters, but there's always that safety and acceptance in Doctor Who and its always trying.
I mean, the main character's gender and sexuality is literally fluid, the Doctor doesn't give a fuck about gender and the fact that trans and non-binary people can relate to the Doctor about something like that is amazing. I've seen so many people headcannoning the Doctor as whatever gender identity/sexuality they want and the fact that they can find themselves in the Doctor is just brilliant, it makes me so happy.
we're now able to have the possibility of seeing the 13th Doctor kiss a woman. it's absolutely canon that the 13th Doctor is still attracted to women. it's canon that's she's married to a woman. it is canon that we have a wlw Doctor and that's great! that's something that will never, ever be taken away from us. and even then, before the Doctor became a woman, they've been in mlm relationships, kissed men and admitted to having a man-crush on the Master. the Doctor is not and never has been straight. we have Bill, the first explicitly lesbian companion and that's wonderful! we have jenny and vastra, a lesbian couple in the 19th century. we have Captain Jack, an omnisexual man, played by an explicitly gay man. we have Clara, Yaz and possibly Graham all hinted at being bi (although, most people find that these characters are bi due to personal headcanons, but because of these hints, these headcanons are possible. I am in no way saying that these characters are explicitly bi, especially Graham). we have loads of lgbt+ characters and that's something that will never change.
the representation in series 11, wasn't perfect, no, far from it, but series 11 had the most lgbt+ random side characters that I've seen in years. however, as I've stated, it unfortunately fell into the "Bury your gays" trope which is really shit. series 12, so far, has been a massive improvement on that trope, giving us a gay couple who was important to the story and both of them survived. yeah, it's not the greatest rep ever, but it's getting better.
Doctor Who is and has always been about inclusivity and that's one of the reasons why I love it so much. the fact that so many lgbt+ fans can find themselves in these characters and relate to them is fucking wonderful and I absolutely love it. the show loves and cares for its lgbt+ fans and always tries to represent them in some way. you can tell that lgbt+ representation is important to every showrunner so far and they have all, in one way or another, brought lgbt+ representation to Doctor Who.

John, John, John and Smith: Headcanons
Based on the Roommates AU by @valc0
I was enabled into this by @ichabodcranemills and @maizenacompany
Clara Oswin Oswald
She went to school with Eleven, ended up as Twelve’s TA, then became Ten’s coworker in the form of the English Teacher.
She and Thirteen dated (She knows Thirteen’s real name too)
Clara’s just… Getting Bi
Seriously though, she adores teaching and history, currently she’s planning on working up to being a University professor as well.
She is the only outside force that can get BOTH groups to shut the fuck up just by being in the building.
Gets coffee with Missy at least once a week, rocks up and scares Missy’s students by looking very punk rock but being really sweet and sassy.
Her and Twelve have an ongoing bet to see if Ten and Saxon will get back together within the year, her guess is before Christmas, Twelve claims before Easter.
Will grocery shop for the older gents in the building who live in the floors above the Doctors and Masters.
She is small, but she is TERRIFYING, woman can not only run in heels, she WILL run in heels.
Can roast you into oblivion in less then one minute.
Bill Potts
Twelve’s Current TA, she’s met Thirteen and Missy, but only knows of the others by name
There is a reason for that, a very good reason.
(That reason is because it would either end in chaos or chaos, she would also not hesitate to push Saxon out of a window and Ten would love her just for that.)
Makes sure Twelve eats during the school day, can competently teach the lectures if he doesn’t show up.
She is Done(™) all the time, without fail, always.
Very chill and down to earth.
Can and will own anyone in Smash Bros
Provider of Thirteen’s rainbow fashion.
Thirteen is trying to set her up with a pretty police officer
Her and Clara often get coffee and vibe, Bill tells her everything that Twelve and Missy have done wrong that week.
Can cook moderately well.
Will also roast you into oblivion within a minute.
Yasmin Khan
You know that one officer who is always called to deal with one household?
Meet the Doctors and the Masters’
Is treated to tea whenever she gets called over, gets on well with Nine, the Landlord.
Wonders how Clara functions when everyone who lives there is....Pretty
#Done with the Doctors and their shenanigans.
Confused by the Masters, all of them, there are no exceptions.
Is trying to make detective within the next few years, has no doubt she’ll still be called to deal with this lot.
Gets on well with Thirteen, still done with her though, even if she’s an interesting person to talk to.
Her and Ryan are Bi Buddies and no one can take this from me.
Only cop at pride is Yasmin Khan.
Really chill and all that, wonders how she ended up friends with a bunch of people who act like younger siblings when she has a younger sister at home she deals with daily.
Pretends to be a voice of reason for five seconds before she reveals herself as an enabler to the chaos.
Will also roast you into oblivion.
Ryan Sinclair
A GOOD MAN
Intern in the R&D department under Thirteen, that’s how he knows her, has NOT met any of the other roommates or the Masters because Thirteen will protect him from them for as long as she can.
Is ACTUALLY a voice of reason when it comes down to it
That being said there’s a reason “Inappropriately pushed buttons 442 times” is on his CV.
Bi BUDDIES WITH YAZ AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THIS FROM ME
Lives on his own in a nice little flat
He has a cat.
Tell a lie, he has met O, briefly, he mostly knows him as that one guy thirteen will disappear to see for about an hour.
Is the guy to go to when you need a pick me up or a quick smile.
Has met Bill once or twice by chance
Sets Yaz up with friends he knows and thinks she’ll like.
A bit of a flirt, but a respectful flirt.
Really good at engineering and designing bits of kit.
Makes great tea
Good with children
Will also only need one word to roast you into oblivion.
And that’s it for now folks!
