Jasper and his twin brother, Dylan, were born in Cold Lake, Alberta, and spent most of their youth shuffling between Edmonton and Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake, where their father served as a medical officer. Timothy and Edna were loving parents, wanting what was best for their sons and pushing them to excel. And Dylan did. He proved adept academically and socially, and seemed set to follow in his father’s footsteps as a surgeon.
Jasper, however, never felt he quite measured up to his twin. Jasper got good grades and proved to be a talented athlete and musician, but nothing came quite as easily to him. As they got older, he grew to resent Dylan’s easy grace and the way everyone seemed to fawn over him. By the time they entered high school, they’d begun to drift apart. When it came time to leave for university, they barely spoke. Dylan went east to study science at Western; Jasper went west to study arts at UBC.
His first year went well. Away from the pressures of home and his twin’s shadow, Jasper proved to himself he could succeed on his own. Things took a turn in second year, however, and the seemingly minor, undiagnosed mental illnesses that had shadowed him for most of his life came to the fore. He lost the will to attend school and failed out. Ashamed and without even knowing how to ask for help, he hid the truth from his friends and family alike and told everyone he was going to take a year off to travel.
He didn’t make it far, instead bouncing from town to town in rural BC. It was in Smithers, during October, that he fell in with a pack of nomads. Eventually, they invited Jasper to join them. They spoke of blood oaths and moon phases, and he thought it would be amusing to travel around with a cult, never suspecting the truth: they were a werewolf pack, and joining meant surviving the bite of one of their Alphas.
Remarkably, Jasper lived. He followed the pack around as their Omega for almost a year before he fled. He hopped a Greyhound and landed back in Vancouver, a city large enough to hide in. Which he did for seven years, working minimum wage jobs and busking on the street when it wasn’t raining.
He may have stayed in that life for decades more, if he hadn’t overheard the location manager on a TV set where he was working as a PA. The woman was whispering about a free grant for students at a Caribbean university—and what was more, it seemed the place had some sort of connection to the supernatural. Thinking he’d finally found a way out of the rain and into something useful, something he could take back to his family as penance, Jasper gathered his meager savings and booked his flight the next day. He was going to get a degree, in medicine like his father had always wanted, and then return home: the prodigal son.
Unfortunately, he never paused long enough to consider what the true cost of a purportedly free education might be.
