Didn’t jttw’s publisher see the book’s success and wanted to replicate it with north, east, and south? I thought I read that somewhere but it’s been a while.

I can't say I know anything about that, or at least I haven't heard about it. If you find the link to where you read that I would love to see it! The story of Xiyouji was popular before Wu Cheng'en's version, hence why there were so many different versions around it, just that it was theorized that Wu Cheng'en was able to connect multiple of the one-off tales of them fighting demons and finally put it together in a coherent narrative. Wu Cheng'en's version started to become the 'canon' because of its popularity but that doesn't discredit the popularity or notoriety of previous Xiyouji media.

Xiyouji was based on The Story of How Tripitaka of the Great Tang Procures the Scriptures 大唐三藏取經詩話 which was released around the late-13th-century, giving a good few centuries for the story to rise in popularity before the Wu Chengen's 1592 cut. From there we do see other versions of the story, such as the early-Ming Journey to the West zaju play 西遊記雜劇 which was created between these productions.

If we want to see when the other novels were created it's just a matter of trying to put them in order.

I think that considering how close the publication dates (even the estimates) that it would be fair that most of these pieces of media were either inspired by previous interpretations of Xiyouji and it took some time before Wu Cheng'en's version finally became popular enough to be considered the 'canon' as it is referred to as today. I can't say how fast the spread of literature was back in the 16th century but I assume it would be much slower by today's standards at least.

Lego Monkie King Set Easter Egg

Lego Monkie Kid fans, the Dragon of the East Palace Lego set includes a subtle detail from chapter 14 of Journey to the West. It's a painting of Zhang Liang repeatedly retrieving and placing a shoe on the immortal Huang Shigong's foot. The Dragon King uses this tale to instill perseverance in Monkey.

My thanks to Irwen Wong of the Journey to the West Library blog for pointing out the painting on the Lego set.

Huang Shigong also appears in a Southeast Asian religious trinity associated with Sun Wukong.

It is naturally gratifying to see Tiansheng now, but she is worried about her father's reliance on Tang Wensheng, lest Tang Wensheng occupy her place in her father's heart. Zhu Laifu's lust was not dead, and he aimed at the Tang Chao again but Tang Chao pretended to accept it and used Zhu Laifu to stimulate Tiansheng. Sure enough, Tiansheng was fooled and advised Tang Chao to be careful of being deceived. He unconsciously clashed with Zhu Laifu in order to protect Tang Chao. Tang Chao's only confidant is Qingfang, and Qingfang's gentle tenderness makes her most envious. Cheng Huixin received a photo of his lost wife sent by Tang Youqiao abroad before his death. Cheng Huixin suddenly discovered that the young woman in the photo was Tang Wensheng's mother. Tang Wensheng was very surprised when he heard the news, but it was a pity that he was separated from his father forever, and he only sighed that good fortune made people fool.

In the end, Tang Chao, Tang Wensheng and others were all lured by Niu Shixiong into a deep mountain known as the stronghold of counterfeit medicines, but Tang Wensheng and others fell into a deep trap. Only then did Niu Shixiong show up, and they realized they had been fooled. LMK AU ~ The Journey to the East

I have no idea were to begin with this au but instead of Sun Wukong and Tripitaka and the Journey to the West it's about Macaque and Princess Iron Fan heading east. Why are they heading east? Well long story short after Wukong left Flower Fruit Mountain to join tjttw he was gone for a long time and after several years Macaque chases after Wukong and is pissed when he finds out about the fillet. He does try to kill Tripitaka but Wukong does stop his, after our monkie babies fight it out Macaque tries to get someone from heaven to remove the fillet but is told that they can't. But in the far East of China there is a temple with many magical artifacts including a scroll will an incantation that could remove the fillet. One problem, the artifacts are guarded by a ruthless demon king that doesn't like to share and rules with no mercy. So that explains Macaque is on this crazy road trip but why is PIF tagging along? Well at this moment PIF and DBK have met and fell in love but their families despise eachother in any effort to keep them apart PIF'S family gives DBK a list of impossible trials he must complete to marry PIF. Now you remember that temple of ancient artifacts, well apparently one of those artifacts once belonged to the Bull family but it was stolen and no member of the family was ever able to get it back. PIF task is the travel East, find the artifact, and bring it back.

I'm thinking about adding the Scorpion Queen but there is so much that happens here before and after the tjtte that by the end Macaque is referred to by to Monkey Queen and even Buddha is a litte scared of Sun Wukong and Macaque. Yes Buddha is still stronger but a fight between the three would cause more damage then it's worth. Tell me Tumblr, would you like to know more?

I have another ScotNor AU from when I spent a month in Orkney researching herring fishing in Scotland during the 1800s 🙈

Scotland is a fisherman and one day Norway shows up, sailing across the sea with this old boat and starts selling his herring at the docks - always catching more than the other boats. Scotland does not like this new guy who is not even local, and they strike up this sort of rivalry (because Norway can be snarky when he wants to), sending a few remarks each other's way when they cross paths at the docks or on the sea. Norway has good knowledge of the ocean and knows good herring spots, and Scotland ends up following him there some days. Then, one day, there is a sudden storm and they are too far from land. They get tossed around by the waves, and Norway's boat ends up shattering, flinging him into the dark water. Scotland manages to save him, and together they get his boat under control.
