Modern mdzs character headcanons
The Lans
Lan Qiren absolutely keeps a Burn Book. He uses it to keep records of every misdemeanour. Of every transgression. He has an entire chapter dedicated to Wei Wuxian.
Lan Xichen keeps a hidden stash of hard candies in his room. He likes to suck on them when he meditates.
Lan Wangji records his guqin playing and listens to it on his airpods when he's practising his sword techniques.
Lan Sizhui likes to sketch people. When he has a few free moments, he will find a spot, either in a park or a bench on a street, and will pull out his sketch pad and pencils and discreetly sketch people's expressions.
Lan Jingyi is a gamer. He plays games like Horizon: Zero Dawn; Yakuza; Minecraft; Kingdom Hearts. All his games (including his ps4 console) are hand-me-downs from an older cousin. He has a page or two in Lan Qiren's Burn Book.
Other sects under the cut ⬇️
The Jins
Jin Guangyao is a philanthropist. When he's not busy being the Chief Cultivator, he likes to (anonymously) donate huge swathes of money to various humanitarian and environmental causes. The only people who know he does this are Lan Xichen and Jin Ling.
An unfortunate accident (involving Wei Wuxian) left Jin Zixuan paralysed from the waist down. He competed in Para canoe in two Paralympics. He is now an editor of a publishing company.
Qin Su did not marry Jin Guangyao. (From an early age, she knew that their relationship was that of siblings.) She owns and manages a law firm that helps victims of sexual assault. Her firm has a high success rate.
A few times a month, Jin Ling helps out at a local dog shelter. He takes Fairy, and together, they help socialise some of the more timid dogs. Jin Ling prefers animals over people.
The Jiangs
Jiang Cheng is a bit of a tea connoisseur. When he's not busy managing his Sect, he likes to unwind with a pot of tea. He has sampled teas from all over the world and has a pantry full of jars of all sorts of teas.
Jiang Yanli is a successful cook/chef who owns her own restaurant and who has her own TV show and cookbook. Her husband, Jin Zixuan, edited and helped fast track the publication of her book.
Wei Wuxian loves eating chilli chocolate. To the point where he makes his own and experiments with the heat of the chilli.
The Wens
Wen Qing owns three cats. One munchkin and two rescues. Her house has been decked out with shelves, ladders, platforms, and scratching trees. She has an entire room dedicated to the cats with an indoor jungle gym.
Wen Ning likes travelling. He's been to over a dozen or so countries and plans to go to more. It was Wei Wuxian who got him into travelling.
The Nies
Nie Huaisang runs an art blog (as well as a few social media pages). As well as his art, he posts pictures of his pet birds as well as any wild birds he sees. His artworks are phenomenal, with a nod to more traditional styles. He has thousands of followers.
Despite his tough exterior, Nie Mingjue has sensitive taste buds and can't handle food that is too spicy, too sweet, or too hot in temperature.

I. favourite colours: This answer changes all the time for me. Currently my favourite colour is green, followed very closely by white and blue.
II. favourite flavours: Intense! If the recipe asks for 1 garlic clove no it didn't it wants the whole damn garlic — I love curry dishes especially, anything with strong flavour has my whole heart (I think that comes from a childhood of the saddest bland foods imaginable haha).
III. favourite genres: High fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery. I think that sums up my general interests.
IV. favourite music: If it reminds me of my blorbos I'll listen to it. I have playlists on my phone so I can listen to character-inspired bops on the go. Ashnikko, AURORA, Cloudy June, Elle King and Stela Cole get honourable mentions. I also love soundtrack music. Final Fantasy XIV soundtracks by Masayoshi Soken are top rated, and I know I was once pretty obsessed with Ramin Djawadi's work on Game of Thrones.
V. favourite movies: The Lion King and The Mummy for nostalgic reasons. James Cameron's Avatar franchise for showing me what cinema could be. My favourite of all time is a tough one to choose, probably Princess Mononoke.
VI. favourite series: Beef, Brooklyn 99, Community, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Game of Thrones, Midnight Mass, Samurai Champloo, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Glory, The Haunting of Hill House / Bly Manor, The Last of Us, The Witcher.
VII. last song: ENDWALKER: FINAL FANTASY XIV Original Soundtrack — Flow.
VIII. last series: The Fall of the House of Usher. Carla Gugino is absolutely my celebrity crush.
IX. last movie: It has been so long since I last watched a movie, I think it was Barbie back in August of 2023. It was okay at best, wouldn't want to spend the money on a ticket if I knew what I was walking into. Disappointed because I thought it was going to be a silly little time from the trailers, it looked like something that would be fun and quirky with more humour in the plot (especially since it seemed marketed as something kids would love to come watch too) but its attempts at existentialism and feminist commentary fell flat for me.
X. currently reading: Nothing currently, unless RecipeTin Eats cookbook counts. Dinner by Nagi Maehashi has been an absolute winner for me.
XI. currently watching: At the moment I'm only really watching things on Youtube, specifically Charlotte Dobre and Gab Smolders.
XII. currently working on: The bigger and more meaningful things are weight loss and keeping up with a skincare routine. Next on my list is a new makeup routine but foundation is far too expensive for me to replace right now. I'm also finishing off abandoned videogames, I blasted through Breath of the Wild (and desperately want to chew on Tears of the Kingdom now) and I have Resident Evil 4 sitting there and taunting me.

Note
also, about MC, I think she shined in Sariel’s route when it came to being proactive about everything. I was hoping that meant it would be the case more often in the routes afterwards but from your reaction to Gil’s route, is MC back to square one in the unreleased routes? (I have not read translations for the ones out in JP)
I've only played Cheva, Yves, and Clavis's route till the end. For Gilbert, I'm only at his 3rd chapter. So far, this is my outlook on their MC's:
In Cheva's route, Emma....I hate to say this, but she's an eyesore. She is unreasonably scared of Cheva for no reason. Yes, he pointed a sword at her in their first meeting and it's understandable that she's a little scared to approach him after that. But this goes on for way too long. Emma becomes scared even at the sight of Cheva. Cheva would be doing his work and won't even be looking at her, but she stands in front of him frozen like a statue. Cheva is like---"If you don't have anything to say, then get out of my sight. You're an eyesore." At this point, I had to agree with Cheva, because it was getting annoying. She does warm up to him later on when they started sharing stories, but again, she messes it up by insulting Cheva on the battlefield, calling him a cold-hearted beast. A war..WAR..was taking place, and Emma invites herself for some reason. Why? Because she's Belle guys..she has to be a burden to the male leads and get herself kidnapped so that the male leads can leave the battlefield and come rescue her. Anyways, she goes and stands on the battlefield and sees one soldier dying in front of her. The dying soldier entrusts her with a note that she must give to Cheva. Cheva receives his letter, reads it and puts it in his pocket, and goes back to the battlefield and our pure-hearted Emma is like---"How can you be so cruel? Your man just died in front of you and you act like you don't care?" Like seriously, woman! we're standing in the middle of a battlefield. Do you even know what that means? It's natural for soldiers to die on a battlefield, and the war can't be stopped just because one soldier died in front of you. Did you really think that Cheva would stop a war for 1 minute, so he could take mourn the soldier's dead? That's not how this happens. She was warming up to Cheva a few days ago, so by this point, she must know at least a little bit about Cheva's behavior but no, she has to be an eyesore for everyone. In the next scene, she was seen to have a cut on her finger or something and when Cheva was worried about her, she was like "DON'T TOUCH!" like physically she moves far away from him. At that point, I gave up on her.
She's fine in Yves route, but she hasn't done anything that memorable to me. Maybe she did something good in the other ending IDK, I only played one end.
In Clavis's route, however, she's 50/50. In the 2nd half of Clavis's route, she supports Clavis in helping him escape the people from Obsidian, also encourages him to not give up, helps him with his plans, and even decided not to judge Clavis until she finds his true intention of him betraying his Kingdom. These are all very good things that are actually commendable. But in the first half, she is seen to be very rude towards Clavis. For example, there was this one scene, where Clavis tells Emma that he won't be able to make breakfast for her because he will be going away for some time and curiously asks if she will miss him. Emma on the other hand ruthlessly comments that she's happy that at least for a few days she won't have to eat Clavis's bad cooking. You should have seen Clavis's face! His face literally crumbled at her comment. It's not like he purposefully gave her trash or unedible food or anything, my boy when out of his way to borrow cookbooks so he can make her breakfast every day AND SHE KNOWS THAT TOO!! Sure it's not as appealing as Yves's cooking, but it was still edible and how can she say no to a cake covered in pink frosting that has two horns on them. This is why I'm only 50/50 about Emma in this route because Clavis is an angel and he's too good for someone like Emma.
Also, I've been spoiled about Emma in Nockto's route. There was this scene, where Licht saved her from getting killed and Emma being the most pure-hearted in all Rhodolite doesn't even thank him and instead, shouts at him for Nockto behind. Yes, Emma...that's exactly how you must treat a person who saved your life instead his own brother, you make him feel even more miserable.
That's Emma in the first prologue. In the 2nd prologue, however, she's much braver and mature when standing next to someone like Gilbert. In my opinion, I never thought Cheva was scary, but Gilbert...yeah, he's a little scary for me as well, because I don't know much about him and what pisses him off. So I wouldn't be surprised if Emma froze in front of Gilbert. But to my surprise, she didn't. Even though she's trembling from the inside, she still manages to have a normal conversation with Gilbert, which is kinda new. I only finished like what 3 chapters of Gilbert's route and in those whole three chapters, even though Emma was slightly trembling from the inside, she still have a decent conversation with Gilbert. In addition to that, the next moment, she even catches Gilbert off guard and Gilbert reacts to her in the cutest way possible. GOD!! THAT SCENE IS TOO CUTE!! It gave me diabetes, give me more scenes like that Cybird!!! Full of cuteness. Every chapter must have at least one cute scene like that one! Pls!!
So, that's why I want Emma to be brave and also kind throughout the whole route. When she's always trembling, it's annoying. I want her to be kind and considerate about others...if she is the pure-hearted Belle as everyone says.
The other princes....I honestly don't care about them at all. You say in Sariel's route she's good, but I don't care about Sariel enough to play his route in the first place. No one else other than Gilbert, Clavis, and Silvio stands out to me. Probably after Silvio's route, I'll stop playing the game, unless they introduce a character that is like Gilbert or even better than Gilbert, then maybe.

Magical Malady | AO3
Rating: PG
Warnings: MAJOR Leon route spoilers, blood
Characters: Leon Dompteur & Clavis Lelouch
Word Count: ~3.7k
Summary: Rhodolite is harboring a secret. One big enough to shake the very foundations of the continent if it were ever to be found out. One that has just been found out by the kingdom's biggest secret-keeper and biggest blabber-mouth.
A/N: Part of the Different Universe Same, Love Content Creation Challenge hosted by @xxsycamore and @queengiuliettafirstlady
Last shot at this CCC. Shoutout to @yukina-otome for having a discussion with me a while back about magic in the ikepri universe that was the inspiration for this fic, and to @atelieredux for being my motivation to write it. (Hope you both don't mind the tag)
Prompt: Fantasy AU
Tumblr media
Hours after the birds chirped their last songs of the day, the servants finished their duties and left for home, and the king safely tucked himself in bed, movement stirred on the grounds of the palace. A tiny cloaked blob purposefully weaved its way through the shadows of the pillars until it stopped just under a balcony jutting out in one of the highest levels. Slowly, methodically, the figure hoisted itself on the ivy-clad brick wall and began the climb upward.
The figure hauled itself over the edge and onto the veranda, pausing a bit to peer back down the edge, then made its way towards the glass door. Producing a thin metal pin from within one of the cloak’s many pockets, the figure inserted it into the ornate keyhole and proceeded to jiggle it in slow, calculated motions until a sharp click sounded. The figure pocketed the pin and carefully pushed the door inward. It opened without resistance, paving a path for the lazy night breeze to enter and slightly ruffle the curtains blocking the view inside the room. Before setting a foot inward, the figure tapped a finger on the windowpane, making sure to keep the volume just high enough for the inside inhabitant to hear.
“Leon, are you awake?” the figure whispered.
Like a spit in the face of the figure’s attempt at surreptitiousness, a loud thud echoed in the room, followed by a frantic shuffling of blankets.
“Clavis, is that you?” a hoarse voice called.
Clavis Lelouch entered the bedroom with an air of familiarity. He pulled down the hood of his cloak, his fair hair glistening like gossamer under the full moon pouring in through the now parted curtains, and frowned at his younger brother.
“Don’t you know you’re supposed to keep quiet on covert missions?” he asked with a hint of irk in his tone. He tiptoed towards the bed and ducked low, popping only the top of his head over the mattress to observe the room’s main door exiting to the hallway. Waiting and confirming they were absolutely sure no one would be coming in, Clavis stood and crossed over to the other side of the bed. A thick leather-bound tome sat open face-down on the floor. He picked it up with great difficulty and observed the cover.
“Genealogy of the Rhodolitian Royal Family? But we studied this last year,” he said looking at his brother.
“Just a refresher,” Leon Dompteur said, sitting up in his bed. Even the mix of the pale moonlight and his already pallid features couldn’t hide the obvious tint of embarrassment sprouting in the boy’s cheeks, clashing wildly with his raven locks and golden eyes.
“Right. Wouldn’t want to forget about dear-old great grandfather Murder Beard, now would we?” Clavis said, closing the book and propping it on the nightstand. “You know big brother loves you with all his heart, but I will never forgive you if you end up a bookworm like Chevalier.”
“Then you’d better not waste your time here. I heard Yves has been flipping through cookbooks in the library the other day.”
“How quaint of you to think I wasn’t aware of that. No, all I needed was the help of a sprinkling of itching powder and I’ve made sure Yves won’t even look at a book for at least a month!” He reached into his cloak, pulled out a tiny corked bottle of a sinister-looking red and white powder, and dangled it precariously in between his fingers. “Ah, the things I do to make sure my baby brothers grow up on the right path.”
Leon’s face flushed even deeper. “I’m not a baby anymore, Clavis.”
“But didn’t you know? No matter how old they get, younger siblings will always be babies in the eyes of their older siblings.”
“So that means you’ll always be just a baby to Chevalier.”
Clavis glowered. “I’d heard you’ve been having trouble falling asleep lately, so your gracious big brother took it upon himself to visit you and read you a bedtime story. But seeing as you’re wide awake enough to bare your fangs at me, I think we can find a more amusing way to tire you out.” He set the bottle on top of the book and leapt beside Leon on the bed. “And since you’re so keen on studying history, I’m giving you a pop quiz!”
“That’ll definitely put me to sleep,” said Leon, yawning. “It can’t be anything as bad as Sariel’s tests”
“Ah, but this will not be anything like that Four-eyes’s examinations you’re used to. This quiz will have two possible outcomes. Answer all my questions correctly, and I’ll give you a special prize. But the game ends the moment you give three incorrect answers, and you’ll get a one-way ticket to a night of incurable rashes and scratches!” Clavis began to laugh, but quickly clapped his palm over his mouth and swallowed his giggles.
Leon caught on to his hesitation and smirked. “I’ll just call the guards in.”
“I know you won’t. I promise, the prize I’ve got is really really special,”  Clavis said, removing his hand and extending it. Leon studied him for a moment before grasping it with a weak grip, and the two shook.
“Excellent!” Clavis said. He pulled the hood over his eyes again and grabbed the ends of his cloak, spreading his arms like wings and blanketing Leon’s view. “First question. How many nations is our home continent split into?”
“Four: Rhodolite, Obsidian, Benitoite, and Jade,” Leon answered without hesitation.
“Bzzzzzt! Incorrect! That’s one strike for the fourth prince!”
“Excuse me? Have you seen a map recently?” Leon retorted.
“Uh-uh-uh, only the examiner may ask questions.”
Leon sulked and slinked back against the headboard. “Proceed.”
“Thank you.” Clavis stood on the bed and swished the cloak around his torso. “Next question. What is the historical nature of the relationships with our neighbors?”
“Rocky,” said Leon. “Lots of wars and battles for as long as Rhodolite has been an independent nation.”
“Bzzzzzt! Wrong again! One more strike, and the fourth prince will need aloe to soothe more than just his bruised ego!”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Leon fumed. “You’re the one who’s got the answers all wrong!”
“Can he turn things around with this last question?” Clavis said, twirling on the bed, completely ignoring Leon’s protests. “It’s the final gambit, but will he be too much of a baby to accept the gauntlet?”
Leon squinted his eyes and folded his arms. “This is your final gambit, Clavis.”
Clavis grinned. “A duel then? Very well, the final question is: Why are our neighbors currently at odds with our fair Rhodolite?”
Leon tightened his lips and closed his eyes, not wanting the sight of Clavis bouncing around the bed with his whisking cloak to mar his focus. He sat still for a while before shooting his eyes open and glaring triumphantly at his brother.
“Resources. Rhodolite is known for its ample farmland and impeccable arts. Our neighbors want to snatch as much of those riches as they can get before the others do.”
Clavis ceased his parading and collapsed cross-legged in front of Leon. “Bzzzzzt. Game over.”
Leon grabbed his pillow and swung it directly at Clavis’s face, but the third prince’s reflexes were sharp. He snatched it midair and rebounded it on his younger brother. Leon ducked at the last second and lunged at Clavis’s chest, pinning him by the arms on the bed as he glared down.
“You cheated,” Leon snarled. “All my answers were correct.”
“Maybe by your deluded impression they were, ahahaha!” Clavis laughed, straining his arms to push back.
“What are you talking about? Open up any history book in the library and you’ll see I’m right!” Leon doubled down and jammed his knee into Clavis’s trachea. “Or better yet, ask Chevalier. He’ll tell you just how wrong you are.”
“Perhaps… the Chevalier… of not so long ago… would have…” Clavis choked in between his words. He wriggled his own knee sideways and landed a clean jab at Leon’s elbow, effectively slackening the grip. Clavis then wormed his newly freed arm to push Leon’s leg aside and slipped himself off the bed. Leon tried to pursue, but was halted in place by a noisy bout of throaty coughs.
The coughing forced Leon to curl up over his stomach and retch until they passed. Once the last bits of phlegm left his system, Leon wiped his eyes and raised his arms defensively. Clavis stood at the side of the bed with a pitcher and a glass of water, the dueling spirit faded from his eyes. Leon swiped the cup and gulped the contents in one swig.
“You’re still a liar,” Leon said, heaving and handing back the cup.
“You know I am many unsavory things, but a liar is not one of them,” Clavis said, refilling the glass and offering it again. Leon accepted it but took more conserved sips as Clavis continued to speak. “Though, I admit you were set up to fail with that quiz. Yours is a handicap that has plagued the entirety of our kingdom, I’m afraid.”
Leon scoffed. “Right. Like you’re going to tell me it’s totally normal for people to stop in the middle of the road and start coughing up their lungs around here.”
“I’m not talking about your physical ailment, but a mental one. The one of ignorance.”
“I don’t know what that word means.”
“Neither did I until I looked it up this morning, and that’s exactly the point! There are so many things we don’t know we don’t know, because no one bothered to tell us to go looking for them ourselves!” Clavis said brightly.
“I’m still not following.”
“Think of it this way. I told you the answers you gave to the quiz were all mistaken. What does that make you want to do right now?”
“Wring your neck until you admit you’re wrong,” said Leon.
“We’ve moved past that. What next?”
Leon spun the now empty glass in his hands as he pondered. “I guess I’d want to find out how you’d answer them.”
“My baby brother’s thinking for himself. I’m so proud.” Clavis smiled, and the glass almost slipped out of his grasp after Leon threw it at him.
“Just tell me what you think the answers are or I’m calling the guards,” Leon said.
“Straight to the point. You’re growing even more into a prince right before my eyes.” Clavis set the pitcher and cup on the nightstand and reclaimed his seat on the bed. “First, there are actually five nations on our continent, but the last one has not appeared on any maps in the past millennium. Of course, that’s because cartographers haven’t been able to find it since, hahaha.”
Leon was about to protest, such an absurd proposition Clavis claimed, but he felt a second round of coughs threatening to riot in his chest and held his tongue. “Sure, what about our relationship with the other three?”
“I’ll give you that we’re not exactly all chums today, but wouldn’t you be surprised to learn that we were actually all the best of friends once upon a time? It’s true! Back when Rhodolite was first founded, the five nations sat side-by-side in complete solidarity. They aided each other on all matters, from politics and defense to food and health. A union separated only by location.”
Leon felt his throat twitch. “Clavis, I swear, if this last one is anywhere near as ridiculous as those other two, you’re finished.”
“Oh, but the last is the best one of all!” Clavis exclaimed, grabbing his cloak again and flapping the ends merrily. “Even the best of brothers can have a fallout, but what could possibly separate such a close-knit band of kingdoms? One word, and it was powerful enough to throw the entire continent into chaos.” Clavis inched closer to the curious boy and cupped his hands around Leon’s ear to whisper, “Magic.”
“Mother!” Leon called, and Clavis scrambled to cover the boy’s mouth before he could yell anymore. They wrestled again for a bit, but Clavis quickly got the upper hand when Leon relapsed into another coughing fit, and he seized the opportunity and wrapped his cloak around the two of them.
“What was that for? I just told you the darkest secret in Rhodolite’s history!” Clavis hissed.
“You’re crazy!” Leon said, attempting to push Clavis away from him. “Get out of my room!”
“I’m not crazy, and I can prove it!” Clavis said. Leon halted his assault to look his brother up and down skeptically. “No really, I can!”
“Uhuh, sure you can,” Leon said, reaching for another pillow. But Clavis leapt off the bed and dug his hands behind his back before the pillow struck. It fell to the floor and Clavis kicked it aside with the toe of his boot as he approached Leon again.
“Don’t think I’ve forgotten about the special prize. Close your eyes and hold out your hands.”
“Do I look like an idiot to you?” Leon seethed, raising his arms for another fight.
“Fine fine, you can keep your eyes open. But I promise I won’t do anything else to you.” Clavis beamed the most genuine smile he could muster. Leon sighed and warily held out his right hand, onto which Clavis deposited a flawlessly snow-white rose.
“All that trouble, for a rose?” Leon asked, disappointment evident in his voice.
“Not just any rose, a magic rose. Hold it steady, would you?” Clavis said, pulling a knife out from his cloak.
“Wait, what are you—” Leon began, but stopped midway when Clavis ran the knife along his own palm. “Clavis!”
“Don’t move a muscle” Clavis commanded, unperturbed by his steadily oozing palm. He approached the bed, and Leon stiffened when he brought his hand just above the rose and flipped it downward. Leon nearly vomited when he saw the blood trickle downward, but instead gasped when the drops left no stain on the crisp white petals. Rather, they appeared to dissolve the moment they touched a surface, and as it soaked up more and more the petals started to tint a darker shade, almost as though the liquid pooled within the blossom itself. But instead of the dark crimson of the blood, the rose sprouted a soft lilac sheen. Leon stared at the flower, afraid one wrong move could reverse the effect and splatter him and his sheets with its stored blood, but Clavis daintily extracted the rose from his grip and nothing changed.
“If you thought that was impressive, check this out,” he said, then inverted the flower and pressed it down onto his injured hand. A gentle sizzling sound and a muted light emerged where the flower touched his skin, and after a few moments the tip of the stem turned an onyx black that spread across the stalk until the entire rose was blanketed in a darkness so polar to how the plant started out. A light gust of wind carried in through the still-open veranda and scattered the fragments of the once-rose into the air like ash. Clavis dusted off the remains and raised his unscathed palm to Leon.
“See? No wound.”
Leon grabbed the hand and ran his finger across the groove where the cut once lay. The palm was still sticky with some blood residue, but otherwise the skin was perfectly intact.
“H-how did you do that?” he asked shakily.
“I already told you. It’s magic,” Clavis said contentedly. He retracted his hand, walked over to the nightstand, dunked one of his cloak tails into the pitcher, and started wiping away the remaining blood. Leon watched him with unblinking eyes.
“Where did you learn that?”
“Much as I hate to admit it, I wasn’t the first to stumble upon this discovery. But, I suppose being second isn’t too bad, even if it is to that loathsome brother of ours.” Clavis finished cleaning and closed his eyes. “He’s been acting more reclusive than usual lately, and he spends hours in the rose gardens, but not for reading. That’s not normal, not for Chev anyways, so I’ve been spying on him any time he’s out of his room. And then a few days ago, I saw him sneaking back into the palace late at night with a big bag, long after dinner, and his clothes were all ripped and dirty. That’s not like Chev at all! So I secretly followed him to his room. He has a whole pile of these ancient looking books set up there, I’m talking they’d probably fall apart if you just looked at them! But he flipped through some notes he wrote for a bit then opened the bag. It was filled with these white roses. You’d never find those around Rhodolite, well I’ve never seen them at least. I watched him a little longer, and he cut his hand and poured the blood on some of the flowers and they turned golden!”
“Did they heal his hand up, too?” Leon asked impatiently.
“Err, didn’t catch that part. I tried getting a closer look and he caught me. I barely managed to get out of there alive! But I did swipe a few flowers before I left.” Clavis reached in his cloak again and pulled out another pure-white rose. “I promised you a prize.”
Leon eyed the flower cautiously, but Clavis walked up to him and wrapped the stem in his fingers. “I still don’t know much about this history or magic stuff, I only read a few pages of Chevalier’s notes before he chased me out, but if I can heal my hand knowing this little, just imagine what I can do if I actually studied up on it.”
Leon stayed silent as Clavis continued. “Don’t you see? I could heal you. I could fix up your heart, and you won’t be stuck in this room anymore. Then we can find out what your magic could do, we can learn together!”
“But, Clavis,” Leon finally piped up. “I don’t want to be fixed if it means you have to hurt yourself to do it.”
“Oh, Leon.” Clavis cupped his hands over Leon’s around the rose and smiled sadly. “Big brother loves you so much, you don’t know the depths to which he would sink to see you grow up on the right path.”
“But—” Leon was cut off as the bedroom door flung open.
“Prince Clavis!” Sariel called, tightening the grip on his whip. “You and I are going to have a nice long chat in my office about midnight lurking!”
“I’ll consider it, if you can answer my pop quiz in the time limit!” Clavis replied. He pulled the bed covers over Leon’s head, straightened his own hood, and grabbed the bottle from the nightstand. “Question one! What do you get when you mix powdered rosehip with dried pepper flakes?”
Sariel didn’t even get a chance to answer before Clavis uncorked the bottle and flung it at him. The doorway exploded in a cloud of itchy dust as Clavis retreated back to the veranda and vaulted over the edge, his maniacal laughter dying away as he descended. It took several minutes for the dust to settle, and Sariel approached the bed where Leon still sat protected under his blankets.
“Cough cough—I pray he did not harm you, Prince Leon?” The blanket swayed side-to-side as Leon shook his head. “Very well. I do not wish to expose you to these noxious fumes, so I will come back to check on you in the morning. Rest assured, I will have apprehended that bratty prince by then.” Then Sariel closed the door behind him as he left, scratching his arms and face the entire time.
And Leon was left alone, under his blanket fortress, until morning would strike. Or so, that was what Sariel and Clavis were led to believe.
A tiny head peeked out from underneath the bed, with hair as dark and eyes as yellow as the prince above. “Is it safe to come out now?”
“Not yet. The air’s filled with itching powder, so you should probably stay down there tonight. Sorry,” Leon replied.
“That’s fine. It’s miles better than sleeping on rocks anyways. But next time, warn me before you knock me overboard. That genealogy book had me snoozing by the time I hit the ground,” the boy said. He cautiously reached for the abandoned pillow then retreated back under the bed. “So, that was the third prince? He’s as wild as you say.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you think Sariel will catch him?”
“Yeah.”
“What time is it?”
“Yeah.”
“You’re pretty calm for someone who just found out his brothers could use magic.”
“I’m tired,” Leon said, lying down. He was starting to feel warm under the blankets, but he didn’t dare uncover the shield Clavis left him. The two stayed silent a little longer before the boy under the bed piped up again.
“Does anyone else know about the magic? The king? Sariel? Jin? Can anyone use it? Do you need the roses to use it? Where did those roses even come from? Are the other kingdoms still trying to get the magic? And what was that about a fifth nation?”
“Can’t you hold off on the questions until morning?” Leon groaned.
“No I can’t, and I don’t get why you’re pretending you can,” the boy said, but slowed down his interrogation to a final question. “Do you think he can heal you in time?”
Leon hugged the rose to his chest and pressed his nose to the petals. No scent filled his nostrils, but he couldn’t tell if that was because his illness robbed his sense of smell. “If he doesn’t, promise me you’ll do whatever you can to make him believe he did.”
There was a pause before the boy responded. “I can do that. But what about when he said you’d learn magic together? What if it’s just a royal thing?”
“If you can convince an entire continent you’re the fourth prince of Rhodolite, I’ll bet you can fool Clavis that you’re a sorcerer,” Leon said.
Neither made any comment after that, and the two boys soon fell asleep to the sounds of balmy breezes slowly carrying the itching powder fumes out into the moonlit sky.
Tumblr media
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks we needs more of Leon and Clavis hanging out? These two would be chaos incarnate, and every time the game makes a point to say they interacted but offscreen feels like a jab in the gut. Just slap them with backpacks, a couple of horses and an ancient treasure map and let the hilarity begin.
Also I just love red and purple together ❤️💜

Total Reads For 2023: 95
My goal was to read 90 books and I beat that by 5. I think I’m going to set my reading goal to just 80 this year. Just to give myself a little more freedom. I did read a lot of really short books just to get my number up and I’d rather just focus on reading whatever I want.
Shortest book read: Ice Planet Honeymoon: Raahosh and Liz by Ruby Dixon
Longest book read: Winter by Marissa Meyer
Current read started in 2023 but will finish in 2024: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

For this meme: Dream for Maddox, Run for Nana, Spring for Iris and Proof for Kat?
Ahdhsjfhd SORRY IT TOOK ME A DAY BUT THANK YOU FOR THESE!!!
dream: does your OC have a driving dream or goal? what is it? how far would they go to achieve it?
Maddoxs big dream is to give his daughters the best lives possible. He wants to get his own property out on the lake outside of Domino City, get to watch them grow with Rishid and live the rest of his life happily.
But, his dream for the longest time was cooking. After the magician dream fizzled out, cooking became his life's passion. He wanted to maybe open his own restaurant, but he knew for sure he wanted to publish his own cookbook. He had even been taking culinary classes in college. Then Paige left him with one month old twins and he knew what he needed to do was provide for them the best he could. His dreams were put on the backburner and he focused on his girls and dedicating himself to the family company.
Vance and Chelsea are still trying to encourage him. They want to see him happy, and they want to see him go for his dreams. But Rishid might be the person that coaxes him back to where he wanted to go to begin with.
I genuinely think he starts just random cooking tiktoks and then Rishid encourages him every time and he starts getting more and more views. Rishids there to make him coffee and give him shoulder rubs when he finally starts to write, or help make sure the girls can give him some quiet time so he can focus on the book. He's the one that points out to Maddox he always tells him that whatever he wants to do in the world, whatever he wants to experience, to take it by the horns and go for it; he'll tell Maddox the exact same.
run: what’s one relationship or experience your OC has mixed feelings about? are they good at finding joy in sad things, or vice versa?
One word: Yami.
Nana cares about the Pharaoh. Of course she does; he's a part of her brother she loves dearly, how could she not care about him? She wants to see him get better, to grow and become himself, wholly, fully and unashamedly. When he inevitably moves onto the afterlife, she cries because she's going to miss him and he really impacted all of their lives; he was just as important to them.
But, that's not to say her feelings towards him weren't complicated; they very much were. We have to look at it from her perspective; her little brother -- sweet, kind hearted, would never hurt a fly Yugi -- is being possessed by a 5,000 year old ghost solely focused on winning and making that a big part of his identity, and has been either a) sending people into mental breakdowns or b) murdering them as he saw fit. That's fucking terrifying!
And let's not forget what she saw both when Kaiba and Yugi/Yami Duel in Duelist Kingdom and she saw how much what Yami tried to do broke Yugi. And let's not forget how Yami fucking played the Seal of Orichalcos in his first Duel with Raphael and it cost them Yugis soul. They didn't fully understand how the Orichalcos worked; she genuinely could have lost her brother forever without any way to get him back, for all she knew!
Yamis arc is learning how to be a better man because of Yugi. And Nana is glad to see it happen and she's proud of Yugi for doing so; but those complicated feelings for Yami, even as they repair the relationship, is still going to be there.
Nana also is someone who finds joy in the sadness. She always makes sure everyone knows its okay to sit there with your sorrows, to sit there with negative emotions and let yourself feel them because that's healthy. But she's also just the literal Sunbeam of the group; even in the darkest times, she still fights to find the light.
spring: what does your OC miss most? will they ever be reunited? how would they feel about that?
Mental stability. The first 5 years of her life where she didn't feel like she had to protect and take care of everyone. Her sanity.
It's Alister. At the end of the day, after everything that happened, it's still Alister. Iris thinks about him every day after their Duel, worried if he's okay wherever he is. Is he healing? Is he safe? Is he with people that can help him? Is he dead in a ditch somewhere?
By all means, she knows she should hate him. She shouldn't want anything to do with him. But she saw that pain in his eyes during their Duel. She's seen him at his most vulnerable even before that. She feels like something in their relationship had to be real and even if it wasn't for him, it was for her.
She wants to talk to him. Get closure. Maybe rebuild, if that's in the cards for them but if not then it would be enough for her to know he was getting help and had people to rely on. That he wouldn't be alone.
When they do reunite post series and start rebuilding, there's nothing but patience. They both know they're having to pick the pieces back up, of both themselves, each other and their relationship. But they put it back together, bit by bit, it just takes that little bit of patience and a whole lot of stubbornness.
proof: what is your OC looking forward to? what best moments in their life are yet to come?
Kat looks forward to what the next chapter of her life will hold. She knows that, good and bad, every little memory she can make will matter.
Post Series, she's very much struggling with depression, especially in those first few weeks after. But she will inevitably have the brighter days; reuniting with her father and cousins, the birth of her son, the start of a new relationship, tournaments, the release of Synchro Summoning and inevitably taking over I2.
Because yes she's the VP but she's also the heiress. Whenever Max decides he's going to step down, she will take over the company and it's going to flourish in her leadership.
She also ends up really looking forward to a joint venture with KaibaCorp; a children's hospital in memoriam to Cecelia. Because she carries her sister with her everywhere, knowing she's watching on in pride.

What about 3 and 5?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
weirdly specific artist ask meme
3. What ideas come from when you were little
Well my username for one! I came up with humming-flies way back in 6th grade - I rarely draw the critter but it's become my online brand at this point :V
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
it's fun to draw characters interacting with each other closely but I always have trouble managing it when there's multiple folks touching one another. Also really love nature stuff but anything purely organic is a huuge pain to convey properly, especially water
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
hmmm, well counting the art blog I think I probably post like, 80% of it? maybe 85? The majority of it does wind up online at some point via some sort of sketch compilation, but there is a healthy pile of doodles that live purely in discord chats or on my computer/in my notebook margins (actually if we count marginalia probs closer to only 70% of stuff winds up online lol)
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
ooooh yes haha - I try to keep a list of most of them on my carrd over here, my art portfolio also lists some of them, but my personal favorites have been the FMA Tarot project (my first ever zine! :D) and the FMA cookbook which like, genuinely slaps, the recipes are all so good. My most recent zine was actually a kingdom hearts tarot I was helping out with, and since then I haven't actually been in any super recently, more cause I haven't seen any projects that appeal to me atm rather than disinterest, I love being in zines, they're fun! (I even made my own that's available on my etsy haha - the shop's closed atm cause i'm out of town but will be back up later this week)

Ginger’s Signature Diary - Chapter 3
Just the thought of never cooking again stung like a knife. I've known it was a true calling ever since my Dark Forest cookout.
Growing up in the Dark Forest didn't have all the glamour of a fairytale kingdom, but nothing could beat our cookouts. All the families from nearby hallows and cottages showed up for our famous Candy Witch spreads.
Mom and I spent days preparing all kinds of spellicious food, from steamed wyvern claws to barbequed dragon steaks to 3-magicbean salad. But my favorite was always the desserts. As I mixed cupcake batter, I dreamed of hosting my own cooking show. Then at the cookout, when people ate my food, I savored every "This is better than last year," and "I must have this recipe."
However, I also felt conflicted. Mom and Mrs. Thorn got into a bragging match over whose daughter was better.
"My Faybelle has already mastered sleeping spells. It's been three weeks and we still haven't been able to wake up the goblin guards," Mrs. Thorn beamed.
"Well, Ginger not only memorized the family cookbook, she created a few new wicked treats, too," Mom cackled. "Care for seconds? She baked it herself."
Over at the kid's table, Faybelle and I rolled our eyes and laughed at them. But it happened again next year, and the year after that. Eventually, Faybelle took her mother's pride to heart. She saw me as a competition, not as a friend.
Fortunately, there were other kids at from the Dark Forest, like a quiet girl from Hood Hallow named Cerise, who's now one of my best friends forever after at school.
