I'm thinking about the digital footprints we leave behind. Pictures, blogs, videos, comments. They stay even if we don't. Sometimes we just move on from an interest- abandon old blogs or get bored of a website. Sometimes we die. But the posts, usernames, and profiles stay. They become a memorial shrine for your family to tell that they miss you. A blog can become a record of your final days.

Tonight I found out that one of my old mutuals passed away. We lost touch a few years ago, and I'm only finding out about his death a solid three years after it happened. So I cannot claim that we were close friends or that this news is impacting me in a profound way.

But it is having an impact in that "fucks you up to think about it" kind of way. He was so young. He died almost three years ago and I had no idea. I would still have no idea if I hadn't stumbled across his url on an old post of mine. Pure chance.

I'm also thinking about the ripple effect we have when we create these digital footprints. It's not just that we're here and we take up digital space by having usernames and profile pages. It's how our posts influence the people who see them. My old mutual was an activist and I looked up to that. He used his voice both online and offline, which I found aspirational at the time in my life when we interacted the most. I don't remember every detail now. But I know that the things he shared influenced me as I developed my perspective on politics and social change- especially when it comes to disability/accessibility.

The digital world is not the real world. That's something I've said anyway. But it's not entirely true. The people in the digital world are real. The ripple effect of what we do here is real. The smiles and laughter we induce are real. The information we share can change real minds. The money we donate, the words we say, the kindness we extend- it's all real. And the ripples can keep going longer than we realize.
