“Heroes don’t have to be perfect… they just have to make you feel bigger about yourself somehow.”
-Linda Belcher (season 13 ep. 22 “Amelia”)
Tumblr media
I have been thinking a lot about this. One of the things I have seemed to lose in life is people that I look up to. I was trying to go through my list of heroes, but I am too critical of people. She’s right. They don’t have to be perfect, they’re human.
I just need to think about who makes me feel bigger about myself. Another thing I have been lacking.
Time and exploration. I need to get back into doing what I love, and explore what that means right now.

Personal Halloween Character Design Challenge - Slashertown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time to reveal what I've been doing for Halloween/Spooktober!
Basically a personal character design challenge, inspired by my Tiger vs Slasher Villain post!
The gist is that it's set in a town that's basically a magnet for various kinds of horror villain archetypes, ESPECIALLY Slashers... hence its Name.
The Leads: The main protags of the challenge/setting.
Linda Rivera - A young woman of Spanish-American descent, known equally for both her stubborness and her empathy, and a strong, strong survival instinct. She's the been the "Final Girl" for most of her life, be it as a survivor of a literal cult war when she was a kid to Prom night when she was a teen. She cosplays and paints minis for a living, and is genuinely curious about what's REALLY going on in Slashertown.
Rodney "The Ripper" Rackham. Filling in for the unstoppable masked slasher villain ala Jason and Michael Myers, Rodney was once just a humble shop student with an interest in metallurgy and blacksmithing, until one day a trip to the woods went terribly wrong. For years he was the town's most famous slasher, targeting repairshops and others indiscriminately... nowadays he's more famous for another thing -killing other slashers.
Animal Companions: Filling in for the Animal guide/voice of wisdom, ala Coraline
Peggy Thirteen is Linda's cat. A crafty and wiley critter than seems to know just about every nook and cranny in town. Unusually intelligent for a cat, and remarkably obedient when Linda says to "stay put". There's more to her than meets the eye, as shown with her smug face.
Maharaja is the town celebrity Tiger, having been the one to save Linda from a slasher known as "Henry the Hatchet" a few years ago. Unbelievably strong, and much like Peggy, seems to be far more intelligent than what a big cat should be. Linda certainly suspects something.
Cannibal Archetypes: Self explanatory
Marlowe Magritte: Filling in for the Hannibal Lecter side of the cannibal villain, with a dash of Slowik from The Menu, he's the owner of the most famous restaurant in town. His food is to die for, as certain patrons disappeared in his business, just infrequent enough that no one suspects anything. Sure, while having liver with a nice chianti is nice, what he's REALLY after are memories and experiences. THAT to him, is what makes a true experience.
Merle "The Man Ogre" Mason: The Hills have Eyes meets Leatherface, Merle was a man exposed to chemicals during the end of World War 2 and became a mutant... THEN the magics of the town turned him into a cannibalistic monster, lurking about the hills just outside of town. Suprisingly articulate despite his looks!
Lethal Ladies: Because one can never go wrong with more female slasher villains!
Heather Berry lost her mind when she couldn't be Queen of High School Land, and thus took it out on some students, before mysteriously dissapearing after a fight with eternal Final Girl Linda. Now she's back, as Haley Babbit, successful business women with great PR... but beneath the facade, is still the same bloodthirsty Heather!
Liv Malone - SHE FOLLOWS. Slowly. Very slowly. Sure, she's completely unrelenting in her need to dispatch someone, but man oh-man is she SLOW. A simple shove is usually all that's needed to stop her from following you.
Killer Clowns: And this time, they're a family!
Marco the Clown and Minnie the Mime are a brother sister team that only wants to entertain you with their (occasionally lethal) shows! Please laugh at Marco's jokes and take Minnie's Art seriously, they get uspet if you don't!
Jethro the Jester is their grandfather, and leader of the group, simply known as The Troupe. One of the most powerful entities in town, his shows and acts seem to defy physics itself, and he'll always make sure that you leave the show a new person!
Terrible Toys: Three different flavors of violent toy!
Tricky the Ragdoll - Guardian of all children in town, much like Gamera, just one that's VERY open to lethal force when he sees a kid in trouble. Is actually quite helpful to them, no strings (ha!) attatched, offering blankets, food and subtly guiding kids to reunite with their parents if they ever get lost.
Mrs. Olivia - An overpossessive ghost of a woman from the 40s stuck in a porcelain doll. She'll do ANYTHING to protect her "poppets". ANYTHING. She is awoken whenever someone cleans up her toy body.
The Immolator - The most overtly Chucky-like of the bunch, with a dash of Small Soldiers. A psychotic, misanthropic inmate that winded up possessing the toy of a 90s action figure, he'll be more than happy to murder any meatbags in his sights... so long as he has batteries. The REAL danger is that, when dormant, he can imitate ANY voice possible, subtly suggesting you to really, REALLY give him those batteries!
Oceanic Killers: Because you gotta have a Jaws reference!
Big Bertha and Finn are a Great White Shark and Dolphin duo, that work together to un-alive silly and stupid hairless apes. Big Bertha LOVES the taste of humans, and would go out of her way to find 'em, but usually it's Finn that calls the shots. Any human that bothers him or makes fun of him, either gets a taste of his rostrum, or he sends Bertha to do the dirty work.
Primeval Horrors: Because everything's better with dinosaurs!
The Great One and his Flock: Combining both Jurassic Park and Hitchcock's the Birds, the Great One is a colossal, fifteen ton Tyrannosaurus rex, and is the oldest entity in town, and by far one of the most powerful. So powerful, that no slasher dares to enter his territory (which is the Slashertown Museum of Natural History). The birds of Slashertown are his eyes and ears, agents of his will, and those that mess with 'em don't tend to live to see the next sunrise. It's also a foolish thing to lay a hand on his skeleton, as the paleontologists who worship him like a god like to remind visitors. All those that have done so, either disappear (with the only remains being bloodied claw marks) or become skeletons stripped down to the bone.

faceclaim: Devon Cole
author’s note: I had this idea on a whim (and bc I’m obsessed with her music), and now it’s here. I hope you enjoy this! lindathetree and billtherock are reader’s best friends! Aaaand we’re gonna change his outfit order for NYC. The blue vest set is now NYC I, and the red-striped candy cane jumpsuit is (still) NYC II—I mixed something up and was too lazy to change it lol. Attention: This is… a tad long. And not entirely proofread bc I still struggle with the pain management of my wisdom teeth removal rip

yourinstagram I’m still in awe and stare in shameless wonder over this next milestone in my (relatively young and short) career as an artist. This is your triumph <3

internetroll2 Could Harry just break up with this stupid yourinstagram girl?
;
“We have a problem,” Jeff spoke right next to her and scared the living shit out of YN, who was in deep conversation with a small group of lovely fans, already impatiently waiting for her boyfriend to appear. With a hand pressed to her jeans-clad chest, the woman turned and stared up at the manager with wide eyes. “Dear avocado, Jeff!” He gently got a hold of her arm and urgently pulled her with him while she waved the group with boas around their necks, an apologetic smile on her face. “What’s wrong? Did someone die?” The manager huffed and only stopped when they had arrived in one of the underground hallways of MSG. “Nobody died, but the supporting act got last minute sick.”
YN’s lips parted at that; her mouth formed a soft O, and blinking, she tried to understand the situation. “Okay…? Do you have a backup?” He shook his head slowly, but the expression in his eyes didn’t sit right with her. “Unless someone agrees to jump in,” he now said, and the young woman felt her heartbeat quicken. Jeff didn’t need to explain this further to her, her mind already spiraling at the thought alone of making an appearance on the big stage. So, she started to shake her head—slow at first, but with growing desperation and urgency. “No, no, no.” She moved both hands up; her head continued to move from left to right, fast enough to give her whiplash. “I can’t do this, Jeff. You know I adore you, but… no.”
He followed the young singer as she took several steps back and threw her a pleading look. “Why not, YNN? You are great! You are a great singer! This could be a possibility.” It was almost comical that he didn’t see the controversy lying in it, the potential extent of hate she could get when doing what he asked of her. “That’s exactly the point, Jeff! Imagine what they would think when suddenly it’s me who stands on that stage! A stage prepared for my immensely famous boyfriend. Just… just give this a five-second thought, and you’ll see why I can’t do this. They will all think the same—that-that I’m using him as a launching pad for my own career before throwing him in the trash can like a half-eaten hotdog. But that’s not true!”
YN felt panic bubbling inside her at the prospect of losing Harry over the hate of this fandom which would ultimately attack not only her but him as well. And she couldn’t possibly allow that to happen.
Jeff gently grabbed her shoulders and moved her to look at him. “I know that that’s not true. The band knows. His family knows. You know. Harry knows. Everyone that matters know how much you love each other and that this is not a PR stunt or PR relationship. Who cares what the world thinks?” YN took a deep breath. “They will hate me. I could never use a social media account ever again, Jeff. And you know how much I love to interact with my fans. I… I can’t put that at risk.” His head shake let her breath slow down more and more. “Your fans will know the truth. They always do, somehow. The haters will lose interest soon enough, you know how they behave over time. And think of all those people out there. Many of them already like you because you make Harry so happy, everyone can see it. Remember how they cheered last night when he tried to find you in the crowd, and they helped him to see you between them. That’s all that matters to most of them—that he is happy.”
She took another deep breath and blinked up at him, unsure what to do. “But what if I fail up there?” Jeff grinned. “You’re a blast on a stage. It’s your second home, YN. Do you really think you could fail up there?” Her anxiety screamed Yes, but the realistic part of her brain only shrugged its shoulders because she had always lived for the stages of this world—even if it only was an aisle between bookshelves in the bookshop she worked ever since starting at and graduating from college.
So, all she did was nod once, and Jeff grinned even wider before ushering her to the technicians to provide her with an earpiece and a microphone.
“Uhm… Jeff?” Harry’s voice called through the underground hallway as soon as his eyes spotted his manager. The brunette raised a dark brow at the singer, and Harry held his phone up. “D’you know where YNN is? She doesn’t react to any of my texts, and I thought we would meet here before I went out,” he explained the situation to him—the my girlfriend is kinda missing in action situation.
But Jeff couldn’t really say anything because, at this moment, a voice, followed by booming applause and cheers, echoed through the long hallways. “Hey, everyone!” Harry looked confused as hell as he heard YN’s voice multiplied by a microphone and the sound system of Madison Square Garden. “What’s happening now?” He was followed by his manager and some bodyguards as he just made his way upwards to stand right next to the pit. His eyes almost pop out at the sight of his gorgeous woman standing on the stage, a huge smile on her face.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you because clearly, I’m not Blood Orange.” A laugh runs through the audience. “There was a last-minute sickness call, but we only wish them the best, don’t we? Let them hear it!” The people cheered loudly at that, and YN smiled even more widely. “I’m pretty sure they heard it till the other side of the river! And so, this only leaves the question of if y’all don’t mind if I play the supporting act for tonight, so we can greet Harry properly later on. Would that be alright with y’all?” She moved the mic to direct it to the people in front and around her. His fans cheered loudly, and a laugh escaped YN. “I didn’t quite get you!” Another move of the mic and the audience screamed their encouragement. “I suppose that’s a Yes! Thank you. Don’t worry if you only know a few or any songs at all. We still can have a great time together!” YN turned to the band, and at the nod of the drummer, she held her thumb up and grinned brightly.
Harry stood in constant awe on his spot, almost ignoring his fans, of whom some had spotted the singer, but he was too enthralled by his woman upstage, owning it like she was born for it. And in his opinion, she had been born to do exactly this.
As the first tunes of W.I.T.C.H. echoed through the hall, many of the audience cheered loudly, and even Harry whistled and cheered alongside them. “She ain't out to get you, but she's better on your side,” YN sang, and then, the people sang the refrain with her. “And she don't wanna be anybody else - She's a woman in total control of herself.—Oh my, you know this song?!—It's such a wonder to be under her spell - What a woman, in total control of herself.”
The singer continued to watch in wonder and almost didn’t realize that Jeff had patted his shoulder. “We need to get you ready,” his manager told him, and Harry reluctantly followed him, always throwing a look over his shoulder to see his girl glowing up there.

harrystyles My tired loves x
I always was very grateful for my fans and how we handle things on social media as individuals. But lately—actually, ever since my relationship got public knowledge—hateful comments have pooled here, and I will not tolerate a single word filled with hatred, especially if it’s directed toward this angel of a woman who makes me the happiest. I don’t want to exclude you, my longtime fans and supporters, from this part of my life after I finally feel comfortable enough to share this with you willingly. So, could we treat people with kindness again?
Thank you, x H.

Halo Reloaded: Advice... Again
Fred-104 was sprawled on a moth-eaten couch that had seen better days, probably around the time the Covenant thought humans were an easy target. He was idly flipping through a digital magazine, "Cuisine for the Super-Soldier Soul," a title so absurd it had to be military issue.
Kelly-087 was beside him, her legs thrown over his lap in a casual display of affection, her attention on a holoscreen displaying a list of 'Top 10 Quiet Getaways for the War-Weary Soldier.'
"Look at this," Kelly said, pointing at a blip on the screen. "There's a place that serves a dish called 'The Master Chief.' It's essentially a steak so tender it sneaks up on your taste buds."
Fred chuckled, the sound gruff but warm. "Sounds like something John would accidentally invent and never realize it's named after him."
Their banter was abruptly interrupted by a sound resembling a Warthog crashing through a supply depot. Except this depot was their living room window. Glass sprayed across the room, a makeshift reminder that peace was always temporary.
John-117, the epitome of Spartan stoicism and the most unlikely window-smasher, lay amid the chaos he'd created, looking momentarily perplexed by his own entrance. Fred and Kelly, veterans of countless battles, could only stare.
"John, ever heard of knocking?" Fred finally said, his tone dry enough to make a desert jealous.
Kelly, ever the pragmatist, was already calculating the cost of replacing the window. Again. "Or, you know, using the door like a normal person?"
John rose, shaking off glass like a dog shedding water. "Apologies for the dramatic entrance. I require... assistance."
Fred raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. "Did you run out of doors to knock on?"John's gaze was serious, a storm brewing over an ocean of uncertainty. "It's Linda. I need to ask her out. On a date."
Silence enveloped the room, punctuated only by the distant hum of the station's life support systems. Kelly and Fred exchanged a look, a silent conversation passing between them.
"You flew through our window... for dating advice?" Kelly's voice was a mix of incredulity and amusement.
John, unfazed by the absurdity of his actions, nodded. "Yes."
Fred stood, adopting the stance of a mentor about to impart wisdom upon a wayward student. "Well, step one: don't start by breaking her personal belongings. It tends to set the wrong tone."
Kelly, finding her voice again, added, "And maybe try using words. 'Linda, I value our time together both in and out of combat. Would you be interested in exploring a more... personal mission with me?' See? Easy."
John considered this, his brow furrowed in concentration. "No tactical overlay? No mission brief?"
"Definitely not," Fred deadpanned. "Try to sound less like you're planning an assault on a Covenant stronghold and more like you're, you know, human."
A moment passed, then John nodded, a determined glint in his eye. He turned, assessing the room with a tactical eye that unfortunately included the remaining intact window.
"Not again," Kelly sighed, already knowing what was coming. With the grace of a Spartan (which, in domestic settings, translated to 'bull in a china shop'), John made his dramatic exit through the second window, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
Fred and Kelly, now facing the prospect of explaining to UNSC property management why two windows needed replacing due to 'Spartan relationship advice,' couldn't help but laugh.
"Dinner and window shopping, then?" Fred quipped, offering his hand to Kelly to pull her up from the couch.
"Let's just hope the restaurant has a discount for heroes," Kelly replied, accepting his hand with a smile. "Because at this rate, we're going to need it."

Friday | 09:00 PM |
“Dora is in fact the pinnacle of children’s cartoons and you cannot convince me otherwise,” You declare proudly, Didi nodding vigorously from where she sits on your lap. You had come over to babysit her till her other babysitter got here, while Mr Perez finished up the night shift.
“Yeah! And Diego too. I like him and Dora together,” Didi says, tilting her head to look up at you. You lean back slightly, narrowly avoiding a mouthful of her freshly blow-dried hair.
“Didi, they’re cousins.”
She takes a moment to process this information, the corners of her lips turning down into a frown. “Eww…” She groans in disgust, sticking her tongue out.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” She suddenly asks, shifting her entire body and placing her hands on your shoulders. You settle against the sofa for support, holding her waist to stabilize her.
“Where’d that question come from?” You ask with a smile, though you’re not entirely sure whether to break it to her that you in fact, are single. You can already picture the disappointed frown on her face. A seven year old disappointed in you? That’d be a new low.
“Everyone has a boyfriend,” Didi states matter-of-factly, pursing her lips as she pokes your cheek. “Who’s your boyfriend?”
You let out an awkward chuckle. Has the carpet always been this interesting a pattern?
“I don’t really have a boyfriend, but I’m not looking for anyone right now.”
“Why not?”
“Listen up, you monkey,” You set her down in your lap again, where she settles into a comfortable position, staring up at you with wide, innocent eyes. “Your big sis is about to drop a buttload of wisdom on you. Not having a boyfriend doesn’t always mean the end of the world, ya’know.”
“Yeah, I know that.” She states matter-of-factly, rolling her eyes at your seeming incompetence and patting your head with pity. You laugh in disbelief, but choose to just accept it.
“Right.” The both of you sit in silence for a while, Didi getting distracted in trying to braid your hair while you just enjoy the next episode of Dora the Explorer on the television.
Heavy footsteps that thud up the stairs draw your attention to Mr Perez’s figure in the doorway. He holds a large box in his hands, grunting and setting it down before kneeling with his arms outstretched. Didi jumps off your lap, smacking your face by accident while doing so.
You wince, pressing the back of your hand to your cheek and letting the cold skin cool down the sting. She hugs her father happily, beginning to ramble on and on about her day with you.
“Thanks for watching her,” He says gratefully, handing you forty dollars. “Linda’s on the way now.” You take the money from him with a smile, pocketing it and grabbing your bag.
“Thanks,” You call out as you go down the stairs after giving Didi a small peck on her forehead to say goodbye. You head back home with a skip in your step, ready to put the forty bucks to good use.
You impatiently jog on the spot while waiting for the traffic light to turn green so you can cross the road and reach back home. Upon entering, you realize that the entire house is dark, save for the warm glow from the kitchen.
“Maybe it’s time to let go…”
You frown at the hushed conversation between your parents at the dining table, hiding behind the wall separating the dining room and living room. Letting go? Of what? You peek out from behind the wall, unsure of how to interrupt or announce your presence.
“I don’t…I don’t know,” Your father sighs, placing a hand over your mother’s. She caresses her thumb over the tanned skin, all the scars earned signs of hard work providing for his family. Her face is filled with sorrow and pain, graying hairs escaping from her usual neatly tied bun. She looks disheveled. “Should we really?”
Oh.
The realization hits you like a punch to the gut, all the air and strength leaving you as you slump against the wall, sliding down and drawing your knees to your chest. You’d been so preoccupied that you’d forgotten what today was.
Double checking the date on your phone only confirms it.
August 10th.
It’s wild how it’s been exactly two years ever since the day your brother, Jake, got shot while saving a pedestrian from a robbery.
It had been while he was on his way back home after tutoring a couple of kids he knew at school, the police had said. There had been three of them, and he didn’t stand a chance. A passerby had called an ambulance after they heard gunshots, and he was rushed to the A&E. You’d been waiting at home, eating the last packet of instant ramen he’d warned you specifically not to touch.
Was it mean? Yes. But you’d stayed up all night waiting for your parents and brother to return home, sitting at the dining table with a lighter and birthday cake you’d bought just for Jake that day to celebrate his 21st birthday. So maybe a little bit of revenge wasn’t so bad since he kept you waiting.
You got the call at 5am. Your parents were sobbing over the phone while you sat groggily on the other end, oblivious to the surgery your brother was currently undergoing to remove all three bullets from his body.
You couldn’t believe it back then, and you still struggle to come to terms with it even now as he lays in a hospital bed in a coma. The whole reason you’d moved to Brooklyn in the first place was so that he could receive treatment at one of the best facilities.
Let go?
There’s no way that they’d be suggesting what you think they are…right?
“We can’t provide for her otherwise.”
…Right?
“Tell me you’re not going to let go of him now. Not after all we’ve been through. He’s still alive.”
“Honey,” Your mother starts, moving her hand away from your father’s elbow and standing up. She exchanges a glance with your father, the both of them clearly surprised by your sudden presence. Neither had expected you to be there.
“Tell me I heard wrong.” You repeat, struggling to control the anger in your body. But it shows in your cold words, and the way your eyes narrow into a barely concealed glare. She moves to hold your hand, but you snatch it away from her, taking a step back.
“We’re trying to do what’s best for you,” Your father begins, his hands on his knees as he regards you with a heavy look filled with sadness. His shoulders sag, weighed down by the decision he has to make for the sake of his family.
“Stop. You don’t get to say that. You don’t get to say anything. You don’t get to say shit after what happened with Jake.” You seethe, fingers gripping the doorknob so tightly it almost breaks off. The cool metal is the only thing connecting your senses and grounding you.
“Honey…” Your mom tries to convince you, her hands reaching for your shoulders. Their shadows loom over you, ready to drag you back down into the depths of despair you’d barely gotten yourself out of since moving away from your childhood home.
You flinch, instinctively hitting her hands away from you. Your vision is blurred, barely able to register the hurt in her eyes before you turn, leaving through the door and allowing it to slam shut behind you.
The trek to nowhere is a blur. You can barely remember stumbling past the traffic lights and crossing junctions, the blaring lights and loud sirens only encouraging you to curl in on yourself even more.
Who was he to spring this news on you, anyway?
You’d only just made friends here, you’d finally become comfortable enough in your own skin and allowed yourself to grow attached to the people here.
And now? Now, you’re supposed to just accept that they want to let go? Of Jake?
How dare they?
How dare they?
“Woah there!” A warm hand on your shoulder interrupts you from your thoughts, and you feel yourself being yanked back harshly. You blink, the speeding car missing you by a hair’s breadth.
You’d been so preoccupied in your own head that you didn’t even notice that the light was red, and almost blindly stepped into traffic.
“Oh.” Your voice is caught in your throat. Your face feels warm, and you blink away hot tears that had involuntarily formed in the corner of your eyes. Whether they’re from anger or embarrassment, you can’t tell anymore. “Thanks.”
You can’t even bring yourself to look up at the kind person that had just saved you from being run over.
“You good?”
You barely muster a nod, trying to let go of his sleeve so you could continue running. Their hand however, is circled around your arm and prevents you from doing so. Their warm touch grounds you somewhat, and you finally realize where you are.
“You sure? You don’t look so good.”
You want to just push this stranger aside and leave, where no one will be able to find you. Where you can sort out the jumbled thoughts in your head.
You part your lips and look up, ready to tell this stranger to let go when you suck in a sharp inhale upon seeing his face. Spiderman looks down at you with concern, blinking when he registers exactly who he’s holding.
“Ray?”
— — — — —
“Number five, right?” Mr Perez grunts upon seeing the both of you walk in together. He pulls out some parchment paper, raising a brow when he spots your disheveled state. You nod emptily, patting down your pockets as you try to find your wallet.
“I got it.” Miles pulls out his own wallet, taking out a ten dollar bill and placing it down on the counter.
“Yeah, with pickles. And uh, could you smush it down real flat? Thanks.” You say emptily, staring blankly at the menu on the wall. Miles slowly walks over, handing you the finished sub.
“Y’know, I find that some food always helps,” The comforting smile he sends your way doesn't escape your sight, but you don’t have the energy to respond, much less muster something resembling a weak grin.
The smile slowly fades from his face. He glances down at the sub in your hands. You look down, your fingers grasping it with such a weak hold that it could slip out of your hands any minute now.
You notice the small pickles buried deep within, nestled between the shredded lettuce and cheese. It looked appetizing, yet eating is the furthest thing from your mind right now. A faint inkling of your hunger gnawing away in the pits of your stomach leaves you with just a mild ache, pushing it down.
After running into him in the street while he was dressed up as Spiderman, you had tried to reassure him that you were fine. It didn’t really work though, considering that he had just saved you from running straight into the arms of death by truck.
After seeing your distressed state, he had immediately taken you to an alley, where you made the poor joke of him trying to kidnap you (He just raised a brow at the irony). Instead, he changed into his uniform and brought you to the only place he knew brought you comfort.
And now, he was guiding you somewhere, holding you by your arm so you can’t escape. Damn his smarts.
He leads you to an old apartment complex, walking up the stairs with ease while you struggle to keep up. He waits patiently as you catch your breath, trying to get him to go up without you. He smiles in amusement at that, raising a brow as if he’s saying, nice try.
“What’re we doing here?” You ask, finally at the rooftop.
“Just trust me.” Is all he says in response, guiding you to the edge of the rooftop. He sits down, his legs hanging off the edge and looks up at you expectantly. You stare back at him, heaving a sigh before collapsing down behind the ledge and sitting cross-legged. Might as well. He moves to join you, wincing when you carelessly place the sub on the dirty ground.
“So… Nice weather we’re having?”
It’s silent.
Miles has never wanted to jump off the rooftop and swing away this badly.
You focus on the half-soggy sub on the ground, the thin parchment paper protecting it from the dirt. It’s greasy from the melted cheese and the strong tang from the multitude of pickles piled on it lifts your mood slightly, yet sours it more at the same time.
You pick it up gingerly, ignoring the way his eyes widen in your peripheral as you start to devour the sub. You didn’t even realize how hungry you were until the first bite..
After what feels like seconds, you’re already swallowing the last bite, cleaning your hands with some wet tissue you happened to find buried in the bottom of the bag. Perks of being a regular messy eater, you suppose.
A small breath makes its way past your lips, your gaze settling on the skyscraper a distance away.
A few more moments pass.
“Why does everyone feel the need to decide important things in my life without even waiting to hear what I have to say?”
The question is rhetorical, and you don’t expect an answer.
You don’t get one.
Miles chooses to stay silent. You turn your gaze toward him instead. Every bone in your body feels brittle, and the weight of your heart sits heavy in your chest, like a stone that’s sunk to the bottom of a deep lake.
“Why does everyone think they know what’s best for me?”
A breathless, hollow laugh slips past your lips, though there’s no hint of a smile on your face.
You can sense his hesitation, the way his shoulders are tense.
Another moment passes.
You move your gaze up, allowing your eyes to travel past the dark blue sleeve of his uniform, and past the small bruise on his cheek. His eyes are full of concern and hints of worry are etched into his features.
“I don’t.”
“What?” You stare at him, not having expected him to actually answer.
“I don’t expect anything. Sure, you might’ve kidnapped me and forced me to sign a contract against my will using both emotional and literal blackmail whilst holding my identity over my head…”
“And?” You probe, raising a brow when he trails off, slightly entertained by his words.
“You’re…not a bad person. You should get to decide how stuff goes. I know I did. I’m trying to, at least.” He pauses, looking down at his hands and being reminded yet again, of the sacrifices he’s had to make so far.
School, friends, his social life…
His uncle.
“I didn’t get to decide to be Spiderman. It just…happened.” He looks back up, the weight of his words heavy.
“...Did you ever have to sacrifice your family?”
The question comes out small, your voice soft through the howling winds that were beginning to blow through the city.
You spot the corner of his lips tighten, pulling down into a frown before he looks away.
“Yeah.”
“I see,” you murmur, looking down at the small specks of dirt that cover the ground. You felt like an idiot. Compared to what Miles had gone through, what you had on your mind seemed so small and insignificant. “Sorry, this is really stupid to cry over,” You laugh out bitterly, wiping your eyes with the back of your hand.
“How do you know?”
“Because you’re not a bad person.” Miles repeats.
The remark makes you still, your breath hitching in your chest. Not once, not even during the move, had your father ever reaffirmed you like that.
You’d acted out in your old school, tried to get his attention in all ways possible – even the bad ones. To the point that you neglected to actually understand yourself.
He’s right.
You’re not a bad person.
All this time, you’d been doing nothing but blame yourself for something that wasn’t even your fault.
And that’s all it takes for the compressing weight to finally lift off your chest.
You can breathe again.
“You’re right.” You use the back of your hand to wipe away the remaining tear that had slipped out from the realization, standing back up with the familiar embers of determination starting to flicker in your heart.
“So, are you gonna do what they want you to do?”
You manage to muster a grin.
“Nah, I’m gonna do my own thing.”
