A misunderstanding leads to some interesting developments....

When Adira, as she would now forever be known, was brought down into the study, Caliban was not alone.   He and the other man stood as she entered after the guard put her on her feet just outside the door.  "I can come back later if you're busy," she offered, obviously a little uncomfortable.  "The guard didn't say anything about you having company. I could have waited."  She gave the new man a small smile.

"Don’t be silly, Adira.  This is my attorney, Theron.  Theron, may I introduce you to Adira Andros." Caliban gestured to her.  They were only pretending that it was not known what was going on.  One never knew who was listening or watching.  The room was to be soundproof and swept for bugs, but there were still windows.  Since Riona Kalavarti was dead, the introduction had to be done under her new name.  

"Adira, it is a pleasure," the younger and clean shaven man said.  He  was about the same height as Caliban, same dark hair and eyes, they could have been brothers.  He stood, taking her hand and shaking it in greeting, then helping her to a waiting chair.   "Wait, Andros?"  He looked at Caliban and winked with an amused smirk, "you didn't marry this beautiful angel while on vacation last week did you?" 

Adira completely misunderstood the situation, thinking this was part of the ruse and answered before Caliban could chastise Theron. "You could say it was a whirlwind courtship and we're still adjusting but I think the relationship suits us.  He still has to buy me a ring."  She smiled over at both men before dropping her gaze and taking a seat, putting up her foot on the footstool that Theron brought her..

All the color drained from Caliban's face as Theron was left speechless, but trying not to laugh.  Adira had no clue what she'd just done, but now both men were trying to decide whether to go along with it or try to gently correct the situation.  Thinking very quickly Caliban went over to his safe.   "I may have something to hold you over darling," he shot Theron a death glare that did not match his light tone but thankfully where Adira was sitting made it so she couldn’t see.  Theron immediately liked the woman. Any female that could get Caliban Andros to keep from correcting her over something that major, well she was a woman that he definitely wanted to get to know.

As he looked through the ring boxes, Caliban considered what he was doing, and if he had quite possibly lost his mind.  While under normal circumstances the last thing that he would have ever suggested to anyone was to pretend to be married, it did solve a few problems that they would have when coming up with a narrative as to why she suddenly appeared in his life with the same last name.  Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea, and she actually seemed completely relaxed with the idea.  If she’d panicked, then he would have handled it differently.   Once he'd found what he was looking for he closed the safe and walked over to where Adira was sitting.  

"I have a family signet ring I'll use," he smiled at her and she nodded. "I think this will suit you." He opened the black ring box to reveal a platinum band that had cut outs to form intricate scrolled hearts and lattice work inlaid with diamonds that sparkled in the light.  The band was a quarter inch wide and looked like it should fit perfectly. 

"Mrs. Andros?" He raised a brow when there was no response and she just kept staring at it.  Had he picked the wrong one?  Was she disappointed?  He had seen the one that she had been wearing when they’d arrived at the mansion, and while that one had been far more opulent, he hadn’t expected a negative reaction to this one.

Adira's head began to shake as her eyes lifted to his.  "Caliban, that is…" she found a finger on her lips silencing her when she tried to protest and was obviously overwhelmed.

"Don’t try and argue."  Theron laughed from where he was now sitting again over by the desk. Which had both of them turning their head to look at him, Caliban amused and Adira a bit worried.  “You won’t win Adira, he’s as stubborn as a mule,”  he started chuckling.  

“It is befitting the woman who will be wearing it,” Caliban told Adira softly when his attention was back on her. He was just relieved to know she liked it.  He took it out of the box, storing the box in the top pocket of his shirt.  Slowly Adira raised her hand and held it out to him, shaking though it was.  “Nervous, darling?”  The smile on his face went all the way to his eyes and was reflected in his voice as he gently took her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger.  “See, there, it fits perfectly.”  He brought her hand up to his lips to catch the back softly with a kiss.  

Adira’s cheeks flamed bright pink at his flattery, especially because the look in his eye said that he meant it.  When was the last time Mircea had complimented her?  Kissed her hand?  Cheek?  ANYWHERE?  It had been so long since there had been one singular drop of affection from him that she could not remember.  It caused a lump in her throat that was hard to swallow around.  “You are too sweet, Caliban.”  Her eyes dropped for just a beat as she smiled before looking back up at him.

I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.

as a reminder to literally anyone and everyone who even so much as considers this: AO3 has NO autosave ability when you're making drafts, so PLEASE do not use it instead of a writing program.

If their server goes down, if you hit a wrong button and refresh the page or go back to the previous page, if you accidentally close the browser, if your browser or device crashes, etc etc etc you are shit out of luck. Your work is gone forever, it didn't backup to anywhere and there is NO recovery option. Even TUMBLR's drafting ability is supposed to autosave and often does.

If you want to avoid gdocs that's fine- there's other text editors with simple autosave options, like Online Notepad or Digital Scholar's notepad, or there's still local-drive writing programs that are free and open source, like LibreOffice. PLEASE do not use AO3 to write your stories into directly. It has NOTHING.
