7. hi, itmf wangxian in a hunger games setting that is not "The Hanging Tree" series by chatonnerie (just read that, it's so good and has me hungering for more!). thx so much!
our lives, never ours by glitteringmoonlight (T, 7k, WangXian, Hunger Games Setting, Angst, Minor Violence, Blood, hunger games typical references to violence, implied happy ending, but it's a bit ambiguous, this exists mostly for angst purposes tbh)

8. hey admins! itmf longer post canon fics like 'wind rose in the clouds'? thank you ❤️
For 8, what about that fic did the requester like? What specifically are they looking for other than length and post-canon setting? Or are those the only criteria?
~*~
9. IITMF ask; Give me your favorite ‘Wei Wuxian in Wei Wuxian’s body or keeps his body or doesn’t actually die’ fics. I’m in the mood to read more of our favorite boy as his og self. (He doesn’t have to start in his body, but I want my boy looking like himself by the end)

11. itmf fics where wangxian time travel to modern times - not reincarnation, but straight time travel. Preferably (mostly) canon typical before the time travel, but the point in canon when it happens does not matter
🧡 The Shade of Old Trees by Kryal (T, 266k, WIP, WangXian, Ridiculously Long Notes, History, Canon Divergence, Modern AU, Slow Burn, Worldbuilding, Slow Life, Action/Adventure, Magic Returns, BAMF WWX) could technically count if you don't mind it being just wwx who ends up in the future?
take me back to a time by DizziDreams (T, 143k, WangXian, Modern AU, College/University, Modern with Magic, Time Travel, Sharing a Bed, Angst with a Happy Ending, Student!WWX, Time-Traveling Wizard!LWJ, Slow Burn, Character Death, Angst, reference to abuse, Canonical Character Death, Canonical Abuse, Canon!LWJ, Canon-Typical Violence, Mutual Pining, Chronic Illness, Not A Fix-It, Case Fic, implied 3zun, Transmigration, America, [Podfic of] take me back to a time by dreamhazer) not sure if this can work
~*~
12. ITMF for fics where wwx is abused sexually by the jiangs (JFM/JC) or an adult male figure he trusts. (Like the "between a rock and a hard place" series by Mydla but the truth is revealed and it's properly dealt with/ he gets his justice) @linossock
🔒 a choice to call our own by renhui (E, 93k, wangxian, JFM/WWX, WIP, Rape/Non-Con, Underage, Angst with a Happy Ending, Childhood Sexual Abuse, Sexual Assault, Forced Bonding, Homelessness, Dubious Consent, Self-Esteem Issues, Soulmates, Not Actually Unrequited Love, Pining while fucking, Misunderstandings, Miscommunication, Breaking Up & Making Up, Hurt/Comfort, Recovery, Good Uncle LQR, No Sunshot Campaign, Asexuality Spectrum) mostly fits the bill, although the requester should be warned that it's a WIP that ends before JFM gets his comeuppance, although it ends with the beginnings of a setup for that, so it's clearly on the way.
clean from the war (your heart fits like a key) by sysrae (E, 28k, WangXian, Modern AU Reunions, past xy/wwx, xy is fucked up but not evil because it's a modern AU and I said so, Hurt/Comfort, Panic Attacks, past wwx/jfm, Past Rape/Non-con, Past Abuse, Rape Recovery, transphobic violence, Victim Blaming, Past wei Wuxian/others, allusions to past self-harm) I think this might fit- note the tags
~*~
13. thank you for this blog!! for the next itmf - any stories that take off like RoseThorne's wonderful ' a grain of millet drifting' - untamed canon-ish where WY is left on his own after the temple scene. angst appreciated - thank you !

~*~
15. helloooo do you know of any fics that are canon events (mdzsverse preferred but cql still fine) narrated from lwj's pov where he's just horrifically pining for wwx? looking for peak canon-compliant lwj pining <3 @nutellacats

Might want to read New Perspective (link in #6) first for context
~*~
16. Hello! For the next itmf, fics that place heavy emphasis on how what wwx practices is guidao (ghost cultivation) as opposed to modao (demonic cultivation)? Ideally canon dynamics, but no smut is also definitely ok! @lovelyiknow

Propaganda:
For Wangxian: "Idk there's just such a je ne sais lesbians to them sometimes"
"Other people have said it better. Wwx very much enjoys playing the role of a wife and pretending to be a poor maiden. He has fun with it. As he should. Makes jokes about having children. Plenty of people see him as very gender and I think that's great. Also pour one being villanised in fandom to uplift other men. What a classic. Love to see it/s. I'm not even joking, the way he's treated by fans for being good but not perfect compared to straight up evil men is very female character coded. He's expected to be nicer to people that want him dead, or else he deserves it. And he's dumbed down, again, to make other men look better in fandom. Meanwhile Lwj takes on a role and characteristics expected from a female love interest, especially as a teenager. Tsundere, likes cutesy things, is very elegant and serious. Mourns his dead love in a very devoted way, while also sorta parenting a child. Very single mom who works and yearns. He's also a very: "But daddy, (uncle more like) I love him!" Type of character, y'know the perfect student in love with the bad boy. lmao Also the horrors. Can't be gay yuri without horrors. Necromancy and cannibalism and whipping and mass murder and stuff"
For Wrightworth: "The fact that I don’t think a single AA fan will disagree with me. I can’t explain it but this too is yuri"
"There are so many themes with these two,, Phoenix literally changes his career for the CHANCE of seeing Miles again. Reunification after 15 years is so yuri. Also in the anime both of them keep a charm from childhood that reminds them of each other, and both of them think the other one must have gotten rid of it by now. Literally so yuri."

On the fifty shades of morally grey
So quick thoughts on how MXTX writes morally grey.
Sorry, I mean, excessively long meta post on how MXTX writes morally grey. Light spoilers for all three books.
A gazillion caveats to begin with. Firstly, I don’t want to argue about whether character x is morally good, bad, grey, pink or whatever. In my books, arguing about whether someone is or is not morally grey is like arguing whether a colour is green, blue, teal, or turquoise – we’re arguing definitions. To add to that, I’m not saying that concepts like ‘this person is overall good’ doesn’t exist, but I would posit that a morally unquestionable person does not exist. Secondly, I also don’t want to pass moral judgements on any of the characters. That’s for a different post. I strictly want to focus on the storytelling techniques that make the reader think ‘hang on a second, are they good or bad?’. Thirdly, this whole post is mainly based on How Arcane Writes MORAL AMBIGUITY (9 Methods, 4 Rules) - YouTube. Great video, great channel (no knowledge of Arcane required). Would recommend if you are interested in story writing techniques!
1) The information gap and the poor narrator
Best example is Shen Jiu from SVSSS. We barely know anything about Shen Jiu. Almost everything we know is from SQQ’s notoriously unreliable perspective, so we’re left to fill in the gaps ourselves. Depending on exactly how those gaps are filled, you can get two completely different people. E.g. Did he have designs of NYY, or was he just ridiculously misunderstood? Who knows! We’re never told. Even if we were told, we should doubt it because it’s SQQ telling us.
2) 4D characterisation
Schnee’s video goes into this in more details, but this is where you build two narratives on top of one another. Best example is Jin Guangyao from MDZS. Is he an underdog who did what he could out of his situation and tried his best to be a better person working for the good of the common people? Or is he a selfish, manipulative, ambitious snake who at every stage pretends to be good in order to win the favour of those around him? The point is that both narratives make sense in the story. There are moments that lean more one way or another, but you can never quite pin him down completely.
3) Moments of weakness
Best example is Xie Lian from TGCF. On the whole, XL is a wonderful human being who you 100% want to root for. Except… there was that one time he made a mistake. He let his hurt and pain overcome him; he became hurtful himself. The point here is to add in just a few ‘moments’ which fundamentally impacts how the rest of the world perceives them from that point forwards. They are forever trying to redeem themselves, forever weighed down by what is a tiny proportion of their life. The underlying question is ‘is a moment of weakness a moral failure?’
Another good example is Qi Rong from TGCF. On the whole, he’s a piece of s***. But then there are moments when he’s a genuinely good father to Guzi, and that’s confusing.
4) Well-intentioned idiot
Trying to do the right thing and absolutely failing. Best example is Wei Wuxian from MDZS. His intentions are always good. There are extremely few moments where he is selfish or overly cruel. He is always fighting for justice, always self-sacrificing, always kind. And yet the outcome of his actions is pretty bad. The underlying question is ‘should you judge a person based on their intent, or on the consequences of their actions?’
(btw the name of the method is from schnee’s video. No shade on WWX. He is very smart… well, unless it comes to LWJ’s feelings.)
5) Excuses
Yes, they’re bad. But we feel sorry for them! Almost everyone fits into this boat, because doesn’t MXTX love trauma dumping? As one example, let’s look at Jiang Cheng from MDZS. JC’s behaviour towards WWX is pretty bad on its own. But given the context of his childhood being compared to him, of having his self-esteem brutally crushed by both parents? Knowing how much he’s done and sacrificed for him, how much he truly cared for him as family? It hits different.
A small point: ‘excuses aren’t enough’ we say a lot (and I agree, to an extent). But compare, for example, Jin Guangshan vs Xue Yang. JGS seems to be a power-hungry asshole for absolutely no reason. On the other hand, put XY in different circumstances and we feel like he might have been a better person. Just as food for thought, there was a Japanese monk Honen (1133-1212) who said: ‘The good person can reach the Pure Land, so of course the evil person can as well’. The point being that the people who struggle with anger and hate because of their circumstances are most in need of salvation.
6) World building and presenting hard questions
What is acceptable sacrifice in war?
Is it okay to make a super dangerous weapon for the sake of deterrence?
How much personal responsibility does someone hold for a lifetime of circumstances pushing them towards a morally questionable path?
What are the responsibilities of a leader – to do what is right, or to do what is best for their people?
The world of MDZS is imperfect. It’s full of horrors and disasters, as well as a mob of outsiders all trying to impart their opinions despite knowing little about the situation. An imperfect world presents unanswerable questions. We see the characters struggle with these questions, come to decisions, and make mistakes, all naturally arising within the complex world that’s been presented.
TGCF does this most explicitly. We literally have Kemo and Pei Xiu arguing about the ethics of war and XL concluding that it’s a Hard Question. In fact, every backstory of every Heavenly Official presents a new Hard Question. I don’t know if I like this method over the more subtle style of MDZS, but I have Thoughts about the storytelling styles of both (long story short, I love them both for different reasons).
7) Worlds are colliding
A slightly complicated method that takes a huge amount of set up. To summarise, set up two arcs that we the reader both feel invested in. Then set up a point where the ‘good’ outcome of one is the ‘bad’ outcome of another. For MDZS, we have 1) JC and WWX’s brotherhood arc. 2) WWX standing up for justice arc. They’re both merrily developing all the way through the conflict with the Wens… right until the moment WWX has to make a choice: stand up for justice and leave JC behind, or to fulfil his promises to JC and turn a blind eye to the injustices against the Wens. The decision is a lose-lose scenario because of the way these arcs have been set up.
8) Spectrums, Spectrums, we love Spectrums
Gongyi Xiao is a cinnamon roll. As is Wen Ning and Quan Yizhen. Meanwhile, the Old Palace Master? Literally no redeeming qualities. Wen Chao? Absolute scum. Then there’s everyone lying somewhere in between. We like Lan Wangji more than JC (I think that seems to be the case for most people?) but we certainly like JC more than JGS. Having a spectrum of morality is important because it gives us reference points to contrast and compare. It also emphasises the moral greyness of everything, because sure, Mu Qing isn’t a noodle like Shi Qingxuan, but is he worse than White No Face?
9) Spectrums aren’t enough – adding depth
Almost all of WWX’s moral ambiguity comes from the fact he has hard decisions to make. And for each of these decisions, the outcome is murky. He developed a new technique to fight against the Wens, but at what cost later down the line? He defended the Wens and gave them a few years of life, but was it worth it?
Compare with JGY. JGY does a lot of good. He also does a lot of bad. The magnitude of both lists is ridiculous. Sure, you wouldn’t usually find someone who’s killed most of their family members in any way likable, but how often do you come across someone who literally ended a war?
So one way of creating moral ambiguity is to make each decision difficult, but another way to go about it is to just… make them do loads of things. Like loads of things. Good things, bad things, all the in between things. Judging each thing is not that hard, but then trying to judge the overall person based on it is extremely difficult.
10) Pulling from the real world
Often, moral questions in fiction is hard because (surprise, surprise) moral questions are just hard full stop. Idk enough Chinese history and culture to accurately pin down all of MXTX’s references, but things like stupid misunderstands leading to conflict, poverty and inequality, less than ideal family situations, the horrors of war… these are all things that happen irl. No matter how fantastical the setting, grounding moral conflicts in reality makes us feel more emotional and invested.
Anyway, I hope that was an enjoyable rundown! This is an imperfect list, so comments, criticisms, suggestions greatly appreciated!

WangXian Twister (1996) AU!!
I said it back on Twitter in 2021 and I'm saying it again, here, for the people on this hellsite (affectionate).
Estranged spouses WangXian! LWJ is coming to deliver the divorce papers! But then nature gets in the way and they're forced to work together! WWX has trauma from his parent(s) dying in a twister as a child!
But most importantly...
WWX in this getup

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks for tagging me, @omgpurplefattie!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
78 😅
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
864,062 - this is apparently just a bit more than Gone With The Wind....twice. I don't know how to feel about this.
What fandoms do you write for?
The Untamed (I have also written a handful of fics for Word of Honor and a very tiny one-shot for Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, but I'm definitely a CQL/MDZS author lol)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
You Need Tending - A very young, tiny Wangxian meet as children in Yunmeng and canon diverges sweetly from there.
Unexpected Solutions - LXC POV - What if the other sect leaders got to see the Burial Mounds instead of taking JGS's word for it that WWX was raising an army?
You Are Of Their Ilk - Sequel to You Need Tending, a LQR-centric fic examining what it's like to actually raise the Jades (and WWX) when he's got a Sect to run and parenting insecurities to overcome.
Plans To Make - A Wangxian-centric Time Travel Fix-it AU, technically the prequel fic to my first 3zun fic (in which the fixings-of-it have already been done and the post-canon, 5-years-in-seclusion Lan Xichen wakes up in the altered timeline wondering how the hell he has two husbands who are definitely not dead).
Professor Lan, Babysitter Extraordinaire - Modern AU Professor!LWJ spends an afternoon minding A-Yuan for Mature Student!WWX and is instantly charmed.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Sometimes! I used to respond to every single comment I got when I first started posting, but then I just got really overwhelmed and had to stop, and I've never picked up the habit again. If I feel particularly strongly about a comment or have something specific to say I'll try to respond, but otherwise I bask in them all silently (sorry, and I love y'all, I really do read every single comment I swear).
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
The Shadow's Call - An extremely depressed Lan Xichen is violently dragged out of his seclusion in the Hanshi 8 years post-canon by fierce corpse NieYao, who definitely aren't sentient at all but still somehow feel incomplete without their third.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Aside from The Shadow's Call all of my fics end happily!! I just can't do the depressing ones most of the time 😅 I think some of my favorite happy endings for various reasons, though, are The Sculptor, After Each Midnight Begins A New Day, anything in the Orville Peck Cinematic Universe, and anything from the 90's Strip Mall AU, Tales From Jianghu Shopping Center. (Everything in the last two especially is just pure feel-good fluff, not only the endings haha)
Do you get hate on fics?
Not anymore! The XiYao troll must have found something better to do so we can now like JGY in peace 😌
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do! I don't know what kind though 😅 the smutty kind? I don't really delve too deeply into kink or BDSM, and I don't write omegaverse or tentacles or anything all that creative; I just write what I would consider bog standard 'I'm ace and I understand people like doing this, I really hope the allos find this enjoyable to read' kind of smut. (Usually for me it's more about the emotional impact/character development use of it rather than the porn-y-ness of it, if that helps??)
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Nope! I like writing AU's of my favorite ships blended with other media I like, but not direct crossovers.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Hope not!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Вони — це ми/ They Are Us is a Ukrainian translation by sandbranco of 'They Are Us', El escultor By Eleanor_Fenyx is a Spanish Translation by ellieffect and KabiBaali of 'The Sculptor', and another Spanish Translation of 'The Sculptor' by GabyObando13. I'm always so flattered when someone likes something of mine enough to do such an incredible labor of love as translating it ❤
What's your all-time favorite ship?
3zun, my beloveds
What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Plans To Make - In an ideal world I would finish this soon so I can stop being eaten up with low-simmering guilt about it (along with several other projects, let's be real), but the fact of the matter is that I never actually wanted to write the full fix-it for this universe in the first place. I started Lan Xichen's introduction into this universe after the fix-it has already happened partially because I find that dynamic of a depressed Lan Xichen suddenly partnered with a happily married NieYao really interesting, but also because I don't like all the tangled threads of a universe-wide fix-it and I knew I'd get way too bogged down in details to really enjoy it. That's exactly what's happened, and that's partially why the fic has been sitting so long without an update. I do really want to finish it one day, though.
What are your writing strengths?
I occasionally get comments praising my characterization/character voices, so hopefully that's one. I also like to think that I do a decent job with accurately communicating both relatable and not-quite-as-relatable experiences - queerness of various flavors, neurodivergence, strangely specific life experiences...I usually try to write what I know, and I'm always happy when it resonates with people in the ways that I'd hoped for while writing them.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I feel like I can get sooo long-winded, and I'm also kind of bad for setting up plotty bits in my longer fics that I never actually follow through on.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
The furthest I'll go is honorifics that I'm confident with using, I absolutely do not trust myself or any online translator to attempt whole lines of dialogue.
First fandom you wrote for?
BBC Sherlock - those fics are all orphaned now, though
Favorite fic you've written?
I'm going to choose three just because I can: After Each Midnight Begins A New Day (3zun), The Sculptor (Wangxian), and Main Objective : Destroy Yiling Laozu (Breath of the Wild AU, my beloved)
I'm going to tag: @little-smartass, @wei--wuxian, @scarlet-gryphon, @wishthatiwasnessiesgirl, @threephasebird, and anyone else who writes who wants to play!

Is WX visiting the ancestral shrine some huge violation of etiquette? I’ve seen this take from some Chinese fans but is this true? The scene doesn’t seem to support this viewpoint. On the contrary, JC is clearly framed as the one who’s actually out of line. His intention was to pick up a fight and regardless of his feelings they were guests (and I’m pretty sure that insulting your guests is not how a semi-decent sect leader should behave)
You mean Chinese Americans? 🙈
It's a common scene in period novel, the guy brings the girl to his dead parents (could be the girl's dead parents too, but main characters more often have dead parents)'s graves or the ancestral hall to introduce the girl to their parents or shifu/master and tell them they're getting married. Where else can you bring your future spouse to meet your parents/elders when they're dead? It's either visiting their graves or the ancestral hall. WWX couldn't exactly have them meet LWJ at the starbucks. The only problem in the wwx's case was the guy who raised him had an jerkass for a son and only viewed wwx as part of the family when he could use wwx. Except when wwx was useful to him, JC had no respect for wwx. JC didn't consider wwx as a full family member who could bring home guest, who could introduce his partner to JFM. JC saw wwx as a servant, who's allowed in LP at his courtesy.
JC throws a fit more frequent than he farts, why're his stans so desperate to find a justification for this one. Wait, actually they try to find a justification for all his tantrums 😂

I wrote this yesterday while crying and wasn't going to post it but then I read this excellent meta by @hunxi-guilai (sorry for tagging you if you didn't want to be, I can remove it if you wish) and was like 'time to actually have feels about lqr and his nephews ig' so here it is
no but do you ever think about Lan Qiren looking at Lan Wangji visibly falling for Wei Wuxian who was just like Cangse Sanren, same grin same mischievous glint in his eyes and would ultimately fall to the same fate as his mother had
and then thinking about the tiny toddler he had to raise and feed and tell that his mother passed away, had to drag the child away from the doors that held no one inside them, the way he taught him over and over and over what was good and bad so that he would never meet his parents' fate and wanting to scream and shout at Lan Wangji
because didn't he have some right over him? Some way of stopping him?. He tried to give his nephew all the right books and gave him all the most severe punishments and then his nephew went to visit the very kind of person Lan Qiren had tried to save him from. he was so conflicted-- was he supposed to be lwj's uncle or the Lan sect leader? He didn't know but he tried his best to be both but he didn't put his hand on lwjs shoulder when he saw his desperate face asking for the books in the forbidden chamber, he thinks he should have
and then Lan Wangji took the hits of the discipline whip in front of him and asked him "What is right and what is wrong? What is black and what is white?" And looked so very sure of his love that made him blind to everything, and how Lan Qiren would have wanted to shout that it didn't matter what was right and wrong because there were rules
and yes rules sounded bad but they were the ones that had helped him when he was barely an adult and had two children and an entire sect thrown upon him
there were rules and there were consequences of thinking there weren't any, and then he watched his nephew face the same fate of isolation that his father, Lan Qirens brother, had faced and he could do nothing about it but only watch and grieve in silence, because he's known since he'd seen the two young boys together that history was to be repeated and that they would never escape their fate
he watches lwj raise a child, names the child after yearning and he breaks every second because it is like watching his own reflection as he picked up lxc, barely a toddler, for the first time, and watches his nephew play inquiry for hours every night and cry over the guqin as his scars bleed and stands powerless, dwelling in his own inadequacy in saving the people he loved most.
but then it's 16 years later and Wei wuxian has come back to life and been forgiven for his crimes and though Lan Qiren hates him he lives in the same walls of Gusu that he himself does and
one day Lan Qiren is walking the grounds and he sees wangji and Wei wuxian together and his heart clenches with ready resentment, except-- wangji is smiling.
not just a small barely-percivable smile but the kind that has lit up his eyes and curves his lips and lifted his face and he's looking at Wei wuxian who is mad with laughter and suddenly Lan qiren wants to shout
he wants to shout till he is hoarse and sob till he is empty because he doesn't know whether he should be his uncle or the lan sect leader but he so wants to be for once just lwj's uncle and dissolve into a puddle because somehow, by some miracle, his nephew did not fall into the hands of cruel fate, and that he doesn't care if wwx is a demonic cultivator but he made lqr's nephew smile like THAT and made him happy and he can see lwj's sorrrow from the 16 years ebb away and he wants to thank thank thank wwx for it but he cannot he should not, and ultimately he will not. but there is something else he can do
so later that day he calls wwx and wwx reluctantly comes there and lqr can see the trepidation and for a second he thinks of how stupid he's being because wasn't he the person to place himself directly against the boy in front of him?, but then he remembers lwj smiling and he takes a deep breath and then talks, more than he ever has and probably ever will with wwx.
he tells him about a girl with a perpetual skip in her step and a glint in her eye and who cut lqr's beard and smuggled liquor into cloud recesses and it's not the best way to say a thank you he knows, but he hopes its enough as he sees wwx's eyes well up with grateful tears.

on one hand i’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while, and on the other hand i’ve been avoiding it for the massive potential it has to go from us having a conversation to devolving into the most annoying discourse possible
but i got another comment that just broke the camel’s back so i’m going to talk about it anyway
a lot of things i see people are saying are “wrong” in untamed fanfic are actually just translation preferences and just because someone chooses to translate something differently than you doesn’t make it wrong
first, before we get into what i’m talking about, we have to talk about what translations are and the motivation behind them
translations are taking something from one language and making it understandable and consumable in a different language
this can be as big as the differences between chinese and english or as small as the differences between british english and american english, which are considered different enough that books published in both places will have words and phrases translated to make them more digestible to the population it’s being marketed towards
there are few different ways someone can translate something
there’s a direct translation, which is just finding the closest applicable word and plopping it in there like a smarter google translate
there’s translating to preserve the intention and cultural significance behind a word/phrase as closely as can be replicated in the foreign language
there’s translating to convey the vibe/feeling as closely as can be replicated in the foreign language
there’s not translating at all, which doesn’t technically count, by definition, but is brought up often enough that we’ll talk about it
there’s an infinite number of ways this applies, but for simplicity’s sake, and because it’s the one people keep bringing up to me, we’re going to go with jiujiu / maternal uncle
because i don’t speak chinese, my first job is to gain some level of understanding about what this word really means in the original language and the way it’s used. only once you understand that can you make a semi-educated choice on how to translate something (since most of us aren’t fluent in the language or culture, semi educated is about as good as it gets, but for smaller words like these i think it’s easy enough to get most of the needed context). so we need to start off with: maternal uncle, respectful, people don’t use names to differentiate between uncles like we do in english, using first names and/or birth names is either intimate or disrespectful depending on circumstance
now, the simplest way to translate this is just as uncle. in english, referring to someone just as uncle is a little unusual, but common enough that this works as a good translation all around. if one wants to translate the maternal aspect of it, then “uncle lastname” works pretty well. the issue with that is that naming convention only ever happens in english maybe with grand uncles or “uncles” that fall more under shushu than jiujiu, so if i was translating it then that’s something i would avoid, because i wouldn’t want the readers to think that the characters have a less close relationship because o this, but it’s something that’s easy enough to do without distorting the original meaning so i think it also works
if the character only has one uncle
but we are, specifically, talking about jin ling here
so if he’s talking about both jiang cheng and wei wuxian in the same scene, and referring to them both as uncle, how do we differentiate them?
uncle wei and uncle jiang work here, because they’re both maternal uncles but they have different last names, which is really just us getting lucky in this situation. but it presents the problem we have earlier.
to an english ear, that creates distance between jin ling and jc/wwx. if i want to show them as being close to an english speaking audience, that’s not a translation i personally want to use
the most obvious solution is to then have jin ling refer to them way most english speaking people would refer to their uncles (that’s not just straight up having him call them by the their names, which is what i actually think is most common. i only refer to my uncle as uncle when i’m talking ABOUT him to someone else) which is “uncle first name”
however first names also present a problem in untamed because of courtesy names and because courtesy names are used ahistorically and inconsistently in canon
wei wuxian uses jiang cheng’s birth name but jc doesn’t use wwx’s. wwx is basically the same age and lower in rank than jc, so it would make sense for jc to call him wei ying in turn, but he just ... doesn’t. same for jiang yanli. she’s arguably the one wwx is closest to and has the most positive relationship with through out the show and she’s older than him. it would make a lot of sense for her to call him wei ying, or even a-ying to mirror the way she calls jc a-cheng rather than calling wwx a-xian. lan xichen calls lan wangji by his courtesy name rather than birth name, and i’m pretty sure lan qiren does the same to both his nephews, which doesn’t really make sense to me in world
i think the real purpose here was to give wwx and lwj names that they only call each other for special intimacy reasons rather than to create a consistent more in the untamed universe
however, going with that and jin ling obviously being so much younger and wanting to retain at least some of the respectfulness that would be inherent in the original language, i do think that uncle wuxian and uncle wanyin are good translations
u n l e s s
see the thing is that jin ling refers to wwx as “wei ying” before he knows him as a way to be disrespectful to him because he believes that he killed his parents. i personally like the symmetry in him shifting to calling him that in a positive manner to make up for him calling him that in a negative manner, which isn’t something that can really work in chinese, but can work in english
as for jiang cheng, probably because the story is told from wwx’s pov even in the show, we’re used to seeing his birth name rather than his courtesy name, and honestly no one uses his courtesy name unless he’s being a bitch. because of this, the use of wanyin creates a cognitive sense of distance that the often used wuxian just doesn’t. so if someone uses his birth name for that reason, i think that makes sense too. so i think uncle ying and uncle cheng can also work
there is, of course, just using jiujiu and trusting context to take care of the rest, but that’s less a translation choice than it is just choosing not to translate
i’ve done different things in different works with different contexts. in rotten work specifically, i had jin ling refer to jc as just “uncle” because i imagine that’s what he’s been doing for 16 years with no other maternal uncle, and because he’s the uncle he’s closest too among all of them, and i wanted to reflect that. i have jl refer to wwx as “uncle ying” a little bit because of the reasons above, but also a way to stake a claim on him to everyone and to demonstrate that they have a close relationship before the really have one as a way to partially shield wwx and to goad those around him (plus a bonus plot reason that doesn’t get revealed until the final chapter)
my point here is that there’s a lot reasons why someone could choose to translate something one way versus another. i used this one thing as an example, but this same thought process applies to lots of things
you do not have to agree with everyone’s translation choices, or like them, or think them appropriate. but translation is by its very nature imperfect and there’s a lot of different potential reasoning behind people’s choices and i really don’t think there’s one perfect way to translate something and that all other ways are wrong

Hello! Can I request more of the fem!wwx childhood friends to lovers au? I would like to see awkward lwj in the middle of puberty freaking out over how pretty wwx is, or a peek into wwx’s life at CR! Thank you
After Lan Wangji’s thirteenth birthday, Shufu and his older cousins start giving him lessons to help him prepare for his future marriage to Wei Ying. Great-uncle Haiyang instructs Wangji in the study of needlework, teaching how to mend torn seams and sew on lost buttons, and then to make doll-sized zhongyi and dresses for the babies in the nursery; and Yufang-tangxiong teaches him how to make rich congee with vegetable broth and cook crispy savory tofu so soft on the inside that it fairly melts in his mouth. Lan Wangji also has lessons in etiquette, and the changes in conduct demanded of married Lan disciples--and by his fourteenth spring, Shufu begins letting him accompany Xiongzhang in his studies as sect heir, though these classes should have been reserved for Lan Xichen alone.
“Did you take these classes when you were a disciple, Shufu?” Lan Wangji asks at last, during one of Xiongzhang’s frequent trips to Qinghe. “This disciple remembers being told that only Ge was allowed to attend.”
Lan Qiren gives him a tight-lipped smile before downing three cups of jasmine tea in less than thirty seconds.
“No. I did not, though it would have been appropriate given what happened with your parents.”
Lan Wangji nods and lowers his head, deeming that answer enough. There are some sect matters that only the current zongzhu and clan heir are permitted to know, and since Xiongzhang might require Wangji’s aid with them someday, giving him an heir’s education could hardly be a bad thing.
But then Shufu drinks a fourth cup of tea, and fixes Lan Wangji with a frazzled glare that nearly makes him jump off his chair. “Uncle...?”
“We can hardly talk around the matter any longer, so there’s no point in hiding it,” Lan Qiren mutters. “Your brother is nearly seventeen, and I have never, in all my life, seen him take interest in a maiden. Hence, it is very likely that either you or one of your future children with the little Maiden Wei will inherit the zongzhu’s seat after him.”
“But--!”
“Let me be very clear, Wangji. I raised you and A-Huan practically single-handedly, and neither of you could hide such feelings from me. Your tenderness towards Wei Ying is obvious to me, and it will always be so--but your brother’s feelings for the young Nie-zongzhu are even clearer, and by now I am very certain that Xichen is going to marry into the Nie clan sooner rather than later.
“If that should happen, he must go with a glad heart and not worry about his sect; and you must be prepared to take his place, since Wei-guniang will be coming to join you here. Do you understand me, A-Zhan?”
Lan Wangji makes a few gurgling noises in his throat. Shufu seems to take that as agreement, since he dismisses him without further ado, leaving Wangji to wander back to his room and try (very feebly) to imagine himself as the future Sect Leader Lan.
It doesn’t work, not in the slightest; and when Wangji is sent away to Yunmeng the next week, he is so grateful to be away from home that he asks the qianbei escorting him if Jiang-zongzhu might let him stay for a few extra days.
“I don’t see why not,” Quan-qianbei hums. “I will write to ask permission from Lan-laoshi and then send word on to you, after which you may ask Jiang-zongzhu directly.”
Wangji would have preferred an outright yes, but there really is no way to ask Shufu before Senior Quan finishes his business in Baling and finds time to write back to the Cloud Recesses.
And when he reaches Lotus Pier, its waters glowing pink and white and green in the afternoon sun, his worries no longer seem to matter. Wei Ying is there, bouncing on the pier’s main landing stage with Jiang Yanli, and the sight of her is like drinking a cool pitcher of water after two days of thirst.
“I brought you another frog,” he says quietly, slipping the fluffy soft toy out of his pocket and into Wei Ying’s hand.
This has become a tradition with them, since this is now the third time Lan Wangji has visited her. Wei Ying asked him to make a friend for the first silk frog, so Wangji brought it the second time he came to Lotus Pier; and this time, he made one no bigger than his littlest finger, secretly intending it to be the child of the two bigger ones.
“A baby!” Wei Ying cries, cradling the frog in the hollow of her palm. “I’ll go put it on my bed with the others.”
She runs off towards the central clan’s pavilion, dragging Lan Wangji with her, and nearly succeeds in pulling him into her bedroom before he stops in front of the door.
“Ah? Lan Zhan, what are you doing?”
“I can’t enter your room before we’re married! It’s improper.”
“Is it?” Wei Ying frowns. “But most of the shidis have already been in here, and Yu-ayi never said...”
Lan Wangji gapes at her. “Wei Ying! That is wrong.”
Wei Ying grimaces and goes to the bed, where she sets the baby frog on a pillow between its smiling parents.
“Well, you don’t have to come in,” she shrugs. “I’m not going to make you. But I will make you come swimming with me later, so hurry up and greet Jiang-shushu before lunchtime!”
Wangji goes to greet Jiang Fengmian in the reception hall, where he spends the next ten minutes answering questions about his studies and his martial training, and then Jiang Wanyin escorts him away for lunch in Madam Yu’s pavilion.
“Where is Wei Ying?” he asks anxiously, when Madam Yu shows him to a little dock reserved for dining and calls a maidservant to lay out three place settings. “Isn’t she eating with us?”
“She and A-Li had their lunch in town before you arrived. Now sit down and drink your soup before everything gets cold.”
After lunch, Lan Wangji is sent off to meditate with his brother-in-law: and then, at long last, Jiang Wanyin departs to accompany Jiang-zongzhu in the audience chambers, leaving Wangji to put on a set of plain robes and go looking for Wei Ying.
He finds her bobbing in the water under one of the diving piers, her arms and shoulders as bare as a newborn baby’s, and closes his eyes to keep himself from passing away on the spot.
“Wei Ying,” he croaks, “why are you naked?”
“What do you mean?” his intended demands. “I’m not naked. I have my dudou and pants on.”
“That is nearly naked! Anyone passing by could see you like this!”
And then, before Wangji can even begin to comprehend how to go about explaining proper dress to his bride, though she ought to know more about such matters than he does--someone taps him on the shoulder, and gives him a gentle push away from the edge of the pier.
“Hey, Wangji-xiong. You’re standing in the best diving spot,” Wei Ying’s third shidi says apologetically. “Do you mind standing over there instead?”
Lan Wangji feels the blood drain from his face.
“Yes, I mind immensely! Avert your eyes, now!” he barks, whipping off his outer robes and holding them up as a screen to protect Wei Ying. “Even if a maiden stands before you unclothed, it is a crime to look at her! Go away!”
A slim, wet hand curls around his ankle, and Lan Wangji’s first thought is of water ghouls, and Wei Ying swimming unprotected among the lotus leaves below--but then it grips him by the foot and yanks, felling him like a young tree struck by a bolt of lightning, and sends him straight into Wei Ying’s slippery arms.
Lan Wangji struggles, but Wei Ying holds him still, and pinches his nose until he settles down enough to look at her.
“Lan Zhan,” she sighs. “All the girls wear clothes like this when we go swimming. Even Shijie. It’s fine.”
“Is he all right?” the third shidi calls, peering over the dock. “Should we get him some watermelon or something, so he can calm down? Biaojie said there was a fruit delivery coming up from the market...”
“He’s just stunned,” Wei Ying calls back, patting Wangji’s forehead--right across his mo’e! “Maybe a fresh set of robes, though? I pulled him in with all his clothes on.”
So Wangji is bundled out of the lake, and put before a roaring fire to dry; for no one believes that he meant to go swimming, not even Jiang Yanli, all because he wasn’t shameless enough to go out of doors in his underwear. Wei Ying is made to kneel in the middle of the training grounds as punishment for dunking him: and Lan Wangji waits for her to return in utter misery, certain that the punishment was all his fault.
Wei Ying is brought in to apologize, even after Wangji begs Madam Yu to let her off, and then told not to disturb him until the next morning.
Lan Wangji doesn’t cry until past hai shi; but he does cry, because Wei Ying is his intended, and he was not permitted to take her punishment with her. Is he not meant to be her husband, her partner in all things? How could anyone separate them and possibly think it was fair?
Hadn’t Wei Ying’s aunt and uncle promised they could be together? Isn’t that what betrothal means?
I am yours, and you are mine. No one must ever come between us; and we must never part.
“Lan Zhan,” a sweet voice giggles under his window, right before a scratched-looking foot swings up over the sill. “You’re so sweet. I only had to kneel for an hour--how can you be so upset over it, ah? Don’t they use ferules for punishment at the Cloud Recesses?”
Wei Ying’s round face pops into view, as bold as it was that morning, and she beams up at Lan Wangji as if he were the sun.
“No one can separate us! Not as long as I say I want you, so be good and don’t cry, ah?”
Lan Wangji stops crying then, stunned, and permits Wei Ying to hug him until he can stand no more.
“Too warm,” he gasps, though his arms are still clasped tightly around her middle. “Wei Ying, go back before Yu-furen catches you, or Jinzhu and Yinzhu will punish you again.”
She gives him a smacking kiss on the nose, setting his whole head aflame with hot blood, and disappears into the night as quietly as she came.
Lan Wangji cuddles down under his blankets, and falls asleep smiling.

Parent Trap AU
...with a side of on-the-run hacker!wwx AU, and celebrity!lwj AU. Full series here.
-
In the end, all the chaos starts because Lan Jingyi gets offended.
“What do you mean you haven’t heard of my uncle?” Lan Jingyi demands.
He glares down at Wei Sizhui from the top bunk. Lan Jingyi and the other two boys in Wei Sizhui’s cabin got into a fight over who would get the top bunks, and after several heated rounds of rock-paper-scissors, they went to Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen.
“Stop shouting!” Jin Rulan yells from the other side of the room. He yanks his headphones off and directs his own glare at Lan Jingyi, who scowls back.
“He said he hasn’t heard of Hanguang-jun!” Lan Jingyi yells right back.
Jin Rulan frowns. “The singer? So?”
“I’m sorry,” Wei Sizhui interrupts, before they can get into a fight. “My dad and I travel a lot, so I’ve never stuck around in one place long enough…”
Lan Jingyi frowns, this time with suspicion. “What does your dad do?”
“Uh.”
He’s a genius-level hacker wanted for a felony he didn’t commit and he’s been on the run from at least two organizations for the past nine years.
“…He’s a computer engineer.”
“Really?” Ouyang Zizhen perks up from his top bunk. Wei Sizhui knows vaguely that he likes graphic design. “That’s so cool.”
Wei Sizhui smiles weakly. “Yeah. Um.” He tries not to panic thinking about what to say if anyone asks him any more questions about his dad’s job.
Lan Jingyi flounders for only a second. “Still,” he insists. “You guys have heard of him, right?” When Jin Rulan and Ouyang Zizhen both nod, he points his iPhone victoriously at Wei Sizhui. “See?! He’s famous!”
Wei Sizhui shrugs helplessly. He doesn’t know why he hasn’t heard of Hanguang-jun. He suspects that it’s because he moves around so much, he’s never really had the chance to make friends, so all the music he knows is the music his dad listens to. Wei Sizhui knows his dad is doing his best, but sometimes it’s unbearably lonely.
Which is why he’s at this summer camp in the first place. His dad pulled a lot of strings (read: committed a lot of forgery) so that he could make friends. And now it seems he’s already made a mistake in not knowing Lan Jingyi’s (“Well, he’s not really my uncle, but we’re related…somehow”) uncle.
“But you’ve at least heard his songs,” Lan Jingyi insists. “Like, uh.” He clears his throat, then shoots a look at Jin Rulan, cheeks flushing. “Our Vow? Water Under The Bridge? I Promise? Someone Like You? At First Sight?” He shakes his head in disappointment when Wei Sizhui just continues staring at him blankly.
“Wait, I’m pulling it up on Spotify,” Ouyang Zizhen chimes in. He rolls over onto his stomach and fishes his phone out of his pocket.
“I can’t believe this,” Lan Jingyi says, still shaking his head. “You’ve at least heard the chorus of Under Moonlight. There’s no way you haven’t.” He clears his throat again, and then clearly chickens out again.
“Go ahead, sing it,” Jin Rulan says, smirking.
Lan Jingyi glares at him, then a thought brightens his face. “Maybe you’ll recognize him!” He whips out his phone and starts typing furiously.
Wei Sizhui opens his mouth to protest, seeing no reason why he would recognize the singer’s face but not their voice, but he’s too late. Lan Jingyi is already clambering down the ladder, and proudly presenting the Google Image results for “Hanguang-jun.” Then Wei Sizhui’s mouth, despite not being closed, really falls open.
“I know him,” he blurts.
“So you do recognize him,” Lan Jingyi says, pleased.
“No, I…” Wei Sizhui stutters.
Now it’s his turn to fumble for his phone. He opens Photos and taps on Albums, then opens Favorites. At the top, timestapped April 5, 2010, is one of the only photos Wei Sizhui has of his dad. His dad hates being caught on camera, for obvious reasons. Still, Wei Sizhui doesn’t hesitate to open the photo and show it to Lan Jingyi.
Lan Jingyi cranes his neck to peer over Wei Sizhui’s shoulder, and his mouth falls open too.
The photo is a still image of two people. On the left is Wei Wuxian, Wei Sizhui’s adopted dad. He’s dressed in a sharp black suit, a red flower tucked into the right breast pocket. He’s throwing up peace signs for the camera. His arms are draped around the other person from behind, and his smile is blinding.
The other person is clearly Lan Jingyi’s uncle, Hanguang-jun. The man has the same striking face, the same light brown eyes. He’s dressed in an all-white suit, save for the light blue flower tucked similarly into a pocket. He has the same ribbon wrapped around his wrist. The main difference between the Google Images that Lan Jingyi pulled up and the photo that Wei Sizhui has is that in Sizhui’s, Hanguang-jun is smiling softly.
It’s a wedding photo.
“No way,” Lan Jingyi breathes. “I recognize that guy! My uncle carries around a picture of him in his wallet!”
“Wait, really?” Jin Rulan perks up at this bit of drama, taking his headphones off completely.
Ouyang Zizhen also perks up, abandoning his quest to find Hanguang-jun’s music. He slides down his ladder, colliding with Jin Rulan’s attempts to get out of his bed. After minimal cursing, both boys make their way to Wei Sizhui’s bed, where Lan Jingyi is still gaping at the photo.
“Wait, that really is Hanguang-jun,” Ouyang Zizhen says. “I guess your dad met him, Sizhui?”
“Oh my god,” Jin Rulan says at the same time. “That’s my uncle.”
This time Jin Rulan is the one to pull out his phone. He scrolls through his videos until he gets to the very beginning, narrating as he goes. “It’s the only video I have of my uncle,” he explains. “My uncle–I mean, my mom’s other brother–doesn’t like to talk about him, because he went to jail like a decade ago–”
At this, Wei Sizhui winces, suddenly remembering why he’s not supposed to talk about his dad with other people.
“–But my mom does, and she sent this to me,” Jin Rulan finishes.
Finally, he finds the right video, and opens it.
The video was filmed on a 2010’s iPhone, so the video quality is poor. Still, the audio is clear enough when the camera is turned around to view the filmer. The man taking the video has a half-fond, half-exasperated scowl on his face. He’s wearing a violently purple sweater, under which the collar of a black shirt peeks out.
“He’s going to break his legs before I have a chance to break them for him,” the man says, rolling his eyes. “Look.”
The camera is flipped around, showcasing a staircase and Wei Wuxian, leaning over the railing. Wei Wuxian looks back and grins at the camera.
“It’s going to work, just you wait,” Wei Wuxian says.
“I’m going to watch you break your legs,” the man says again.
“Aw, Jiang Cheng, have a little faith,” Wei Wuxian retorts. He leans over the railing again. “Wait, shh! He’s coming!”
Jiang Cheng dutifully falls silent, as Wei Wuxian leans further and further over the railing.
“Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian shouts, and then he jumps over the railing.
Jiang Cheng starts running to the stairs, and any and all sounds are drowned out by the background wind noise of the man running. When he stops, he points the camera over the stairs.
There’s a scattering of books across the hardwood floor, and a man in white, whose face is obscured by Wei Wuxian, held in his arms. Wei Wuxian wraps his arms around the man's neck and twists to look up at the camera.
“I told you he’d catch me!” Wei Wuxian shouts victoriously.
“You made him drop all his books!” Jiang Cheng shouts back, from behind the camera.
The camera is flipped back to Jiang Cheng, who’s still rolling his eyes. “Somehow this is my dumbest brother-in-law,” he says.
“Jiang Cheng, don’t be jealous!” Wei Wuxian shouts from the other floor. “We’ll find you someone one day!”
Jiang Cheng’s face colors purple, and the video ends.
The four boys are silent for a moment.
“So that was Hanguang-jun?” Ouyang Zizhen says, after their moment of silence is over.
“I guess so,” Jin Rulan says.
“You’re telling me my uncle and your dad were married?” Lan Jingyi demands.
“And he went to jail?” Ouyang Zizhen adds. “Sizhui, what happened there?”
Jin Rulan wrinkles his nose. “Why does your uncle still carry around a photo of him if they split up?”
“Why did they split up?” Lan Jingyi asks. “Was it the jail thing?”
“Seriously, what did he go to jail for?” Ouyang Zizhen asks.
In eerie unison, all three boys put down their phones and look at Wei Sizhui expectantly.
Two weeks into summer camp, and Wei Sizhui has already made his first three friends, and blown his dad’s cover. He’ll be wanted by the FBI after this, for identity forgery, if they aren’t already–Wei Sizhui isn’t entirely clear, and his dad doesn’t clarify.
Wei Sizhui smiles nervously.
“Who did you say your dad was again?” Lan Jingyi asks.

How do you think the yanderes (Wei wuxian, lan xichen, jiang Cheng) would react to their daughters hating them? For an example seeing their mother (aka darling) crying because of what the Yandere was doing👀
Why are you requesting for the characters with severe mommy issues
But of course I’ll write it! Let’s see. . . starting with Wei Wuxian!
ALSO HAD THIS IS MY DRAFTS AND LEGIT DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT WAS ALMOST DONE UNTIL I CHECKED I AM SO SORRY
Again, like I’ve mentioned countless times, I don’t like to split up Wangxian so this will be a poly relationship!
Wei Wuxian/Lan Wanji
For starters, this is one of the tamest yanderes you could be with if you listen. If you follow their few requirements you’ll forget that you were even kidnapped, they’re very chill but. . .let’s say that you didn’t listen to them. It was simple, stay within the house perimeters and don’t go out. The entire Lan Clan is happy with you being here for the two and happily welcomed your daughter. I can already see WWX and LWJ shedding tears at the birth/adoption of your daughter. Their newest addition to the family!
Once they were brought in, rules were added for both your protection and your daughter! Think of if with the Lan brother’s and their mother. She was given a home but could not leave it. You could walk around the entire sect, you just couldn’t leave. Well, that’s exactly what you did and you got punished for it. They were really disappointed with your behavior but I think what hurt them the most would be seeing your daughter upset.
Maybe they weren’t harsh on you, but you were scared of the possibility of them being angry. It’s been like that for years. You know they’d never hurt you but you were scared of being left alone because I do see isolation or maybe WWX calling up a ghost for scares might be a usual punishment to make you realize, you NEED them. Anyways, your daughter is exposed to this, it doesn’t take long to realize that this behavior isn’t exactly ideal. The next time they scare you or lead you into a panic your daughter stands up. She talks about how she can’t have a stable relationship with either of them because she knows that they’re bullying you. They are hurting you, they are causing you distress and to them, it’s an eye opener.
WWX and his biological family are unknown, but the family that he had with the Jiang Clan meant the world to him. He can’t stand the fact that his own child hates him and neither can LWJ. LWJ cherished the time he spent with his mother, so to some degree, the both can see what their daughter means and realize, it’s time to change. The both come to terms that they should listen to what their daughter says because they don’t want their child to grow up motherless or to some extend, feel like they grew up too quickly with shit parents.
WWX would opt to separate the two of you for the time being. Give one another time to heal and then properly apologize for what has happed. Bringing together the entire family and talking the situation and striving to change. Granted as their daughter gets older they might add some rules towards them to protect of course. LWJ would try his best to show his daughter their logic and reasoning, but I feel like maybe he’s emotionally manipulate his daughter, tell her of their upbringing and why being a parent is a hard task.
Jiang Cheng
Aside from the angst I’m about to spill I know for a fact that his daughter would be best friends with Jin ling and he wouldn’t grow up sad because his daughter would stand up for him when they bully him for it.
Just like his relationship with Jin Ling, he’d love to show emotion but he feels like that would be weakness. He has strict rules on you for sure and those same rules apply to your daughter as well. He’s scared to lose the both of you without a doubt, but does he have to say such harsh words? It almost sounds as if he doesn’t even want you around! His daughter doesn’t waste any time in speaking against him. Sure, growing up with someone like that is tough, because you were somewhat scared of him, but this is about their mother!
They speak their concerns and thought to Jiang Cheng it doesn’t seem like it means a lot to him considering he dismissed his daughter away, the thought lingers in his mind. He does this to protect his family, both his parents are dead, yanli is dead, and he can never face Wei Wuxian again because of what happened. He understands where they are coming from though, its the same with his mother. His mother loved and cared for him, she had a rough time expressing it and a rough way, but all he ever wanted was his mothers approval. This is where it gets interesting, it will take time but he’ll start slowly changing.
He’ll let himself indulge in certain feelings from now on. Making it easier on his daughter so she doesn’t try to seek his approval, but he also awaits the moment he can hold your hand and admit his love for you. He loves you and his proud of you and your daughter, but he’s so afraid that the moment he looks away or seems weak, someone will come in and take you away from him like the Wen Clan took his family.
Lan Xichen
I think I mentioned that worst case scenario your child will live separately from you if things went south, but let’s say it did. Your child only gets a few hours of visitation a couple of days until you start craving more. Lan Xichen uses this tactic to make it so that you plead and beg him to bring you back to him. Your child catches on to this and tries to negotiate with him. He sees her side and begins to think, she’s right. As much as he knows that his plan WILL work, he’s been thinking of breaking you down for a perfect family instead of trying to create a perfect family. Well he did raise a smart girl after all.
It would have been a shock to him when his daughter comes to tell him. She hates what he’s doing to you because it’s not good. It’s not normal and he’s going to break this family if he keeps trying. I honestly see his daughter attempting to manipulate him into releasing you or changing his behavior towards you. While he doesn’t fall for the manipulation because he finds it amusing, he does come to understand her side and agrees. He starts to see that he enjoys a family who is together as opposed to one that is far away.

@fytheuntamed ‘s Untamed Fall Fest. Day 2: Family
Family shapes you.
WWX got his parents’ spirit. LWJ remembers his parents’ mistakes. JC is haunted by the expectations and what might’ve been.
I like how CQL shows all of them as kids with their parents. I tried to capture on the actors’ faces something of what they felt. :)
