it makes sense that ART password-protected its backup copy of itself using the name it calls murderbot, but it is batshit bananapants that murderbot actually tried said name as a password. and yes there were like five totally rational reasons for murderbot to make that guess, but in another sense murderbot sat there and went hmm i wonder if ART compressed itself into this extremely vulnerable code bundle which it then protected with my name. just my name, just the name it calls me. i wonder if ART made it so that the "local feed address hardcoded into the interfaces laced through my brain" (verbatim page 130, babey!) is the key that would allow me and only me to either resurrect or utterly destroy it. i wonder if ART chose to hide itself in such a way that it could only be found by the invocation of the name by which it calls me. and then instead of going haha no that's batshit bananapants, murderbot tried it. and it was right! the trust, the intimacy, the compatibility...but most of all, the ability to imagine oneself as important to someone! bat! shit! banana! pants!!!

My unpopular opinion is that in languages with grammatical gender like french, it does make sense for Murderbot to be referred to by whatever pronoun is usually used for robots or constructs. (In french, therefore, grammatical masculine.) Because there are no traditional « it » pronouns in these languages for objects, and while there are neo-pronouns, they are things one must choose for themselves. Do you honestly think MB actually spent time thinking about its pronouns?! No it didn’t. On forms it picks « non-applicable ». When people ask it what pronouns they should use, its honest opinion is « why do you even need to talk about me. Just don’t fucking do that. Don’t think about me either. Just fucking stop perceiving me altogether! »

Thinking about what pronouns to use probably makes it way more uncomfortable than letting people call it what they’ve already been calling it. Making a conscious choice about its identity? And telling other people about it??? No thanks bye, it’s just gonna walk into the ocean now, see you never.

Lbr it probably thinks the only bots that get fancy pronouns are comfort units, and the pronouns are probably shoved into them by humans same as everything else. MB would meet a bot using a neopronoun and it would wish it could barf. Because in a language like french, he/him and she/her, when applied to objects, ARE fulfilling the function of the english « it ». Nobody is saying the table is a woman or related to feminity in any way outside of stand-up comedy; when it comes to objects grammatical gender really has fuckall to do with human gender even if we use the same words. Even animal species names have grammatical gender and everyone gets that there are male and female turtles even if the word « turtle » is a female word, it’s not that confusing.

(I know this is strange when your language has different pronouns for people and for objects, but understand that english uses the same word to indicate if I’m addressing one or many people, and that is confusing to me.)

TL;DR; stop harassing international fans for not getting the correct MB pronoun in english right off the bat. Yes in english calling it « he » or « her » or « them » is upsetting because it’s projecting an identity unto it. But same goes for trying to get a foreign language translation to use a pronoun intended to express or showcase an identity (or even a lack of one!). Murderbot has not thought about it this hard, refuses to think about it this hard -> and that is its only canon accurate gender identity.

leon looked for you everywhere. he felt like he was running in circles with how tired he was, but finally he found you. before he could get to you, the floor gave out, and you fell. before you could fall, leon grabbed your hand, trying desparately to pull you up, but you were slipping. he couldn't hear anything, not even his own words. it was dead silent, and it freaked him out.

'leon, it's okay.' he saw you mouth, and let go of his hand. shaking his hand, he grabbed your wrist tighter, and as fit as he was physically, it was like his arms were made of jelly. he was unable to lift you back up, and watched as you fell down, sobbing.

leon shot up in a cold sweat, panting heavily, tears gathering in his eyes before he wiped them away. he looked around the dim bedroom, only your light had been turned on, and he looked for you around the room. not seeing you in bed, he got up, his heart beating fast.

"babe..? where are you?" leon called out, searching the whole house for you, nearly in hysterics, looking on the balcony before you had stopped him, putting your hands on his shoulders gently.

"leon? what's going on, is everything alright?" you had asked worriedly, and leon sighed in relief, wrapping his arms around you, burying his head into your shoulder. you furrowed your brows, concerned, returning the hug gently.

"i.. i thought you-" leon sniffled, trying not to cry, eyes slightly watering. it was rare for him to be like this, so you just let him let it out, running your fingers through his hair soothingly.

"shh, shh, it's okay, just calm down, leon." you murmured, and he squeezed you tighter, afraid you would disappear, taking deep breaths.

"you.. i had this dream, and then when i woke up, you were gone.. i thought it.." leon explained, calming down slowly as he pulled away to look at you, eyes flitting over you; unable to focus on one thing, he was just making sure you were okay. his thick eyelashes were clumped together with tears and he was still unsure if this was real, flashes of his dream appearing in intervals.

"no baby, i'm right here. always." you reassured, combing through his hair gently, looking into his eyes. you took his calloused hand into yours, pressing your palms flat together.

"see? look, leon. remember what we practiced?" you said, and leon nodded, his breathing slowing down and his fingers gently intertwined with yours, squeezing your hand gently, wanting to be sure for himself you weren't just a figment of his imagination.

"thank you.." leon replied, now calmer, not as panicked as he was a few minutes ago. you smiled, kissing his hand gently, and led him back to the bedroom, while he followed you like a puppy.

"are you okay?" you asked softly, rolling to the side and turning off the dim light. he nodded, laying on your chest, still holding your hand.

"yeah.. i think so." leon mumbled, so quietly you had to strain to hear it. you kissed his head gently, your thumb rubbing his hand gently.

the two of you layed there until the sun rose, and you continued to lay there when leon fell asleep once more, combing your fingers through his blonde hair.

I love the new Murderbot book for so many reasons but one of them is how much more interested MB is in things going on around it. I know it spent most of the book semi-dissociating or whatever, but I feel like this is the first time we've got any descriptions of the terrain or the people.

In previous books, I remember getting identifying information like approximate age and hair/skin/uniform color, but in System Collapse there's all sorts of descriptions of things like - what the plants look like, the texture of the walls, the types of clothing people are wearing.

MB also takes interest in conversations that aren't directly relevant to it. Despite the content, it tracks Ratthi and Tarik's interactions pretty closely and openly narrates the banter between the crew, when before it probably wouldn't have even mentioned it, or explained it away with a single sentence.

I just think it's cool that MB is engaging with more stuff.

🟨 Appearance Creator Mod Infos Dump

With the release of ACM (Appearance Creator Mod) I wanted to dump some information that might be useful, especially for non-modders that want to play around with it!

(I had no involvement with the making of this mod at all, nor I have any tie with AMM development, just throwing my two cents as a regular user, player and modder)

You'll find some How To, Tutos and other useful heads-up under read more, if you plan on using this mod as a modding tool (sketching up outfits ideas before modding them as custom appearance for your blorbo for example) or simply want to play blorbo dress up!

First, You might want to get familiar with these suffix, as you will need to identify what part of a character's outfit you wanna swap

⚠ It's important to note that Garments are NOT automatically refited to the character! You can use a WA garment on a Male NPC but it won't magically fit his shape

⚠ Johnny and Kerry, despite using the MA rig, both have a thinner bodies and most of the garment will float and appear larger on them

⚠ A lot of Garments have their own RIGs and physics, and might T-pose / break upon being swapped on your NPC of choice! For this reason, Hair with physics will automatically break as well

AMC is a standalone window in game, and not included in AMM main window!

After spawning a NPC, the AMC window should fill up with the spawned entity's garment components (and yes it can get crowded really quick, especially on smaller monitors and resolution)

Yes, It also works on NPVs and NPC+! 🔥

Everything on these windows can be overwhelming especially if you're not familiar with modding, so I'll throw a little example here using Scorpion

First I want to get rid of his hood and vest, without using AMM's custom appearance, using only ACM

In the list, I look for his Vest and his Hood component

We can easily turn them invisible by clicking the "Toggle" button Make sure to also disable any decals, stickers, and additional component (his vest also has a decal component, see in the screenshot)

The little icon next to a component's name indicate it has been edited in some way

I'll now switch his tank top for something else

Click on "Select From List" next to the "Mesh Path" of the desired component (in Scorpion's case, t1_060_ma_tank__corset) Open up the "Torso" list, and you'll be able to click on any of the listed t1 and t2 garments!

⚠ As mentioned above, garments doesn't magically refits on characters; Scorpion use the Man Average body and rig, anything that isn't a "ma" garment won't fit him correctly!

⚠ Another thing to be aware of is that a lot of garments's might break around the collar area! However if you plan on using this same mesh in an outfit, don't let that scare you, as it's easily fixable in blender

Export your desired mesh and look for the "NeckCollar_JNT" bone and simply rename it to "Neck" (blender will put some numbers next to it but that's fine, ignore that)

I'm going to switch to Valentin here to showcase how to deal with potential clipping 🤏 Since Valentin's body is customized, bit chubbier, he always needs refiting

Let's say you swapped your character's top for something else but part of his torso clips out

To put my boys titas away, I'll look for his body component (t0)

Click on "Chunk Mask" to open the garment's submeshes list

Garment's meshes are broken down in multiple submeshes that can be easily chunkmasked (disabled) at will to deal with clipping! This is why NPC usually don't even have a full body mesh when taking off their clothes, they are chunkmasked to avoid clipping :D

I will disable the Submesh 1 by unchecking the "1" box

Don't be afraid to click on multiple box and see what gets chunkmasked on different meshes! You won't break anything 👌

Nosk Party Collab

✨ No disguises necessary! ✨

What is the Nosk Party? It's a collaborative project that anyone with a nosk OC or nosk design can join by drawing their nosk(s) and submitting via the form below before the end of June 2023. The final results are a couple group pictures of nosks hanging out in the same place and having a great time!

✨ Basic rules:

-Make a new drawing of your nosk(s) having fun -Drawing can be digital or traditional (see below for image requirements) -Can be bust, half-body, or full-body -Flat color or minor shading is ideal -Body horror is fine, but no NSFW, and keep gore mild so we don't have to add a content warning -No more than three nosks per person -While the rave theme is optional, it is encouraged :)

✨ Image requirements:

-Draw large! 1000x1000 pixels at a minimum -File size limit of 10 MB

Digital art: -Submit a PNG with transparent background -Do not add an extra border

Traditional art: -Take a clear scan/picture with no shadow over the character -Ideally take the picture during the day for natural light and truer color -Optional (but preferred): Edit out the paper background if you can, but we will do that if you cannot.

✨ Submission form will ask for the following things:

-Your tumblr username -Your nosk's name (or what it is based off, eg. Elderbug Nosk) -The image file of the artwork -Optional: group name if you are organizing an interaction with other artists but submitting separately -Optional: relative size of the nosk (based on the diagram in the form)

-Nosks based off in-game characters/creatures are absolutely allowed. They can just be a design you made rather than a full character, if that's what you'd like to submit. :) (However, drawing Ghost Nosk or Hornet (Winged) Nosk as they appear in the game will not be accepted) -Bust/half-body drawings will be grouped together on one canvas, while the full-body drawings will be on a separate one. -If you would like to plan character interactions with friends, you are welcome and encouraged to do so! Oh, Ratthi, my beloved...🥰

First impression

Like a lot of us, I only had eyes for Murderbot the first time I read ASR---the human team absolutely got shoved to my mental backburner while I was busy relating to MB. In the five seconds I did spend thinking about Ratthi, it was mostly in a "oh, so this is going to be the problem child, huh?" way when he almost walked outside into the worm's mouth.

Impression now

I love him, your honor.

But also, he is an all-around delightful human being. There's a kindness and an earnestness to his character that is just so endearing you can't help but like him, especially when you layer in the fact that he's excellent at his job, great at adapting to high-pressure situations on the fly, and has the people skills to successfully navigate the absolutely wild interpersonal interactions that the series keeps throwing at him.

Favorite moment

That whole sequence in Fugitive Telemetry where he and Gurathin drop everything to help Murderbot do some light breaking and entering. It feels like the equivalent of an errand hang-out, but if your bestie spends its spare time solving murders rather than picking up dry cleaning and going to Target. I love the implication that this is just what they do now, once Murderbot has settled into the group. Friends help friends with projects, right? So, obviously, Ratthi is going to help in whatever way he can.

Idea for a story

I kind of want to do more of his PoV for various scenes throughout the series. He's present for so many of the juiciest scenes---there's a lot to work with!

Also, it might be fun to do something with his friendship with Arada and Overse, perhaps with some backstory on their first meetings and how they moved from colleagues to besties.

Unpopular opinion

In all honesty, I don't feel like there's too much pressure re: popular vs. unpopular opinions in the Murderbot corner of the internet. The only thing that comes to mind with Ratthi is that I think we tend to...soften him a little too much sometimes. There's a tendency to focus mostly on his skill as a people person or a friendly face, not necessarily on the fact that if he wasn't so good at his actual job, he probably wouldn't be on Mensah's team. We see him tackle gory jobs like cleaning up the battle aftermath on ART in Network Effect, we see him jump into helping with medical emergencies, and in Fugitive Telemetry, he immediately identifies that "someone was dead here" when they come upon the scene of the murder because the physical signs are obvious to a biologist. As far as the humans of the series go, Ratthi is very capable!

Favorite relationship

Aside from the obvious friendship with Murderbot itself, I really do love that he's best friends with Arada and Overse. I love that these three stuck together for the next survey to follow the disastrous events of ASR. I love that their friendship is so obvious and loud that even Book One Murderbot could immediately point it out. I just really like seeing healthy platonic friendships (especially ones that coexist with and do not compete against healthy romantic ones involving some of the same characters), okay?

Favorite headcanon

The infamous "Who's this?" line from ASR was a full-on my-brain-is-short-circuiting-and-my-mouth-got-ahead-of-my-mind moment, not necessarily an ah-yes-a-stranger-to-be-introduced moment.

excuse the crudeness for it is difficult to capture the beauty of this lil girlie from memory, BUT, they had white stripes and their head was also black and white stripes, kinda like a circus tent mb?

and then the wings had this crisp white edge/center, and it looked like someone dotted a black wing with white dots near the actual edge of the wing!! I live in central illinois in the us if that helps!!

this one’s actually difficult for me. could it have matched the black and white warbler?
