Wirt: I have the headcanon that he is not a fan of Halloween anymore, so, he sticks with his gnome costume.

I’ve been randomly consumed by the concept of an LMK Gravity Falls AU (thanks to YouTube comments) Here’s what I’ve got so far:

MK- Dipper

Mei- Mabel

Macaque- Stan

Wukong- Ford

Red Son- Pacifica

DBK and PIF- the Northwest parents

Spider Queen- Gideon (I’m so sorry Queen 😔 but you do both build a mech and serve the main antagonist before turning against them and also exist mostly as a minor annoyance aside from your one big moment)

LBD- Bill

Sandy, Tang, and Pigsy all kind of vaguely fulfill the concept of Soos, Wendy, and Stan but not so much in a story manner

-MK finds the staff (which had been left behind much like the Journals, except Macaque left it where it was because he couldn’t lift it) and unlocks his powers in messy and chaotic ways so he and Mei train on FFM with Macaque

-Macaque is pretending to be the Monkey King, claiming he “started going by Mac around mortals, might be easier for all of us if you called me that too”

-MK and Mei get into various demon-related shenanigans thanks to MK being Monkey King’s successor. Macaque himself rarely shows up to help with those unless they’re in actual danger because he doesn’t want it getting out that the Monkey King is missing and that the Six-Eared Macaque is impersonating him

-Macaque: “I can’t lift the staff or use my Monkey King powers anymore because I passed them on to you. Heh, it’s okay, gold never was my color anyway”

-he and Wukong had their big falling out under the mountain, and after that, they didn’t see each other for ages. LBD grabbed a hold on Wukong’s mind during a thoughtless, impulsive move of his, and while she can’t quite possess him without her full power, she can feed his negative emotions and whisper thoughts into his head. He knows this and calls out to Macaque for help with “a curse” without explaining why (as usual)

-Macaque, the simp he is, arrives to help and immediately gets met with an LBDified angry Wukong ready to kill him. Mac, confused and upset, can’t keep up with a full-powered not-holding-back Wukong, and loses his eye. He panickedly pulls him into a shadow portal that he can’t control because his powers are going haywire with his panic and fear. He’s been dreading Wukong’s return, but in recent years, he’s gotten concerned and been trying to locate him because if Wukong hasn’t returned after this long, could he be… gone?

-Wukong chooses to spend time hunting down information on how to end LBD instead of returning, and he gathers the rings of Samadhi. He returns to FFM where he senses Mei (ya know, descendant of Ao Lie and all that), only to find Macaque fighting with a strange kid filled with Wukong’s own glowing light and power. Immediately assuming the worst, he jumps into the “fight” to stop it

-Mac is terrified, and Wukong is just terribly confused because he doesn’t know why he’s THAT afraid of him, the two haven’t even seen each other since their big argument… right?

-MK and Mei jump in to protect Mac and Wukong is, again, terribly confused

-MK: “Who the heck are you?”

Wukong: “Uh… I’m the Monkey King. You have my powers, don’t you know who I am??”

MK: “What? Nah, Mac’s the Monkey King”

(Macaque is very stealthily trying to escape)

Wukong, just befuddled: “Wh— no, I’m the Monkey King. Indisputably. Always have been.”

Mei, who was a little suspicious anyway but still liked Mac: “Prove it. Pick up MK’s staff.”

Wukong: (smirking) “Easy.” (It is in fact very easy) “See, kiddo?”

MK: (jaw-dropped, turning to Mac, who suddenly looks very guilty) “You LIED TO ME??”

Mac, rubbing the back of his neck: “Well—“

MK: “Dammit, I should’ve known Mac didn’t make any sense as a nickname. If you’re not Monkey King, who even are you??”

Wukong, before Mac can say anything: “His name is Macaque. Well, the Six-Eared Macaque is his full name, but— he’s definitely not the Monkey King. He’s a trickster, but,” (baring his teeth) “I never thought he’d stoop to stealing my identity.” (He looks at Macaque, who’s frozen) “Lazy identity theft, at that. What the hell have you been doing with my name, Macaque? Dammit, it’s been YEARS. How petty can you GET?!”

Macaque, finding his voice to be angry: “PETTY?! You TOOK MY EYE!”

-Wukong is, again, as always, confused because he would remember doing that… right? And Mac doesn’t elaborate and they continue bickering (with escalation) until Mei and MK break it up and explain what Macaque has been doing with them and how he hasn’t done anything evil and has, in fact, only been good

-Wukong settles down and decides he wants claim on training his successor which sparks an argument until they agree to compromise. Wukong, as typical, doesn’t tell anyone about the Samadhi fire. They end up bickering a lot during training

-LBD finds them anyway and starts the ritual and kidnaps Mei

-after getting Mei back, they have to all work together to beat her using the Samadhi fire, and they end up having to use it on her while she’s inside of a vessel that isn’t the child she was possessing (because no children murder). Macaque makes the sacrifice in Wukong’s place

-I’m not sure how it ends, but Macaque does come back :))

-the end, it’s 3:30AM and I have many more thoughts but am so so eepy

WR&R MYSTERY KIDS LORE & WORLDBUILD MASTER POST

Gear up, kids, because this will be a long one.

It's been a while since I posted a new comic. Pretty soon there'll be a bunch, because I've been sitting on a mountain of scripts and just started making progress on actually making them into comics. I wanna build up a nice little backlog that I can queue up and not worry about for a long while. In the meantime though, I have something I hope will tide you guys over.

There's been a problem with my comic from the very beginning I've never really thought to address for years, and until now, I never found a good place for it. That problem is "worldbuilding." Originally when this comic started out, it was just a Psychonauts comic. Then I got into Mystery Kids, and the MKs just showed up out of nowhere.

We never got any information on how the Mystery Kids club started or how they all met. For the longest time, I kind of just defered to the collective fandom's various disorganized headcanons and ideas and stuff. But I think enough time has passed that those ideas have all changed, been forgotten about, or branched off into their own individual works.

So, it's finally time for me to fix that by giving this comic its own set of lore and backstory. In this post I'm going to explain how everything happened, how the kids came together and what order everything happened in. This is kind of written for my own personal amusement, but also as a guide to keep in mind when I'm writing new stories in this setting, to keep things consistent.

PART ONE: THE CANON HISTORY

The first step for this little exercise is to figure out when all the stuff in the original "canon" happened. This is where things get a little messy, because we have to figure out a proper order for everything so all the pieces can fit into place.

First, we have to come up with a system for naming the different eras and phases where things happen, so we can more easily compartmentalize the different events. So we'll call the first year the Mystery Kids are together "Year One." Anything before that we'll call Year -1 or -2.

Year -2 is where we'll put the events of Paranorman. They happen in Fall, around Halloween probably. Nearly the end of the year. It's important to set this part the furthest back for reasons we'll get into later.

Year -1 is where we'll put Coraline and Psychonauts. Dipper and Mabel are still in Pidemont. There are a few references in the comic to Raz still having a water problem due to "the curse." But in PN2 he conquers the curse. We'll chock that up to lingering after-effects and him trying to get past the mental block.

Near the end of Year -1, Aggie returns and reunites with Norman in events identical to how they played out in Ask-Norgatha. A lot of things that happen are very similar to that old blog, with the exception being Norman and Aggie don't get together. That comes later.

Year 1 is when Gravity Falls happens. Coraline and Norman are family friends (or cousins? I haven't decided, maybe not. Maybe 'honoary cousins'?) Anyway, so: things play out pretty much how they did in that fan episode people made. Doctor Loboto (during a villainous relapse, or a manic episode) comes to Gravity Falls, Raz and Lili chase after him, Coraline and Wybie come with Norman's family on a vacation to Gravity Falls. Aggie stays behind because Norman doesn't want her to get lost. At this point, her Poltergeist powers haven't kicked in yet and other people can't see her, meaning she'd have no way to get home.

So, during Loboto's shennanigans, the kids all come together to stop him. That's when we move into…

PART TWO: THE FANON HISTORY

Note: in this period, my comic has a lot of Holiday specials. We're operating on Peanuts rules here, where the time-scaling slides around to keep the characters from aging. But we'll say in the "real" canon, the stuff that happens on Holidays actually happen on regular days, for the most part. If things "have to" happen on a Holiday, they'll all happen on the same one, just at different times. We'll try not to think too hard about this, because it's just a cartoon. We're out to make a consistent world, but not to arbitrarily restrict ourselves. None of this stuff happened in the "real" world anyway.

Anyway, moving right along to the rest of "Year 1." This is for the comics I made while the show was still airing, so things all kind of click together.

This is where the first Mystery Kids Adventure happens. The kids are all united and save the day. All of this happens right in the middle of the events of Gravity Falls. From then on out, the kids have adventures together on and off, but its a little hard because they have to travel a pretty great distance to hang out together. They keep in touch on social media and stuff, occasionally finding ways to fake excuses to go out and travel together. But mostly, the group is pretty disorganized.

Dib is also a mindless fanboy of the group and wants to join, but everybody thinks he's weird and annoying, so they try their best to politely blow him off. Then he builds a teleporter that lets the kids get together easier, but the thing just barely works. Dib is made a "junior member" and just sort of hangs around.

The kids have a "clubhouse", but it's just a shanty shack built by Soos, half a mile away from the Mystery Shack.

At some point during this period, the Bedlam returns and the kids have to team up to stop her. Aggie helps somehow with her newly-emerging poltergiest powers. The Bedlam is defeated, and that's the last "real" adventure they have for a little while. They don't have a reliable way to meet up anymore, so they only get together for parties and stuff. This is where the Season 3 Finale happens, if you've read my archives.

PART THREE: THE CURRENT SITUATION

From Season 4 and onwards, everything that happens to the Mystery Kids happens in Year 2. That's where we are now.

It starts with Dib on one of his own little adventures. Somehow, he ends up stumbling on an abandoned treehouse that used to belong to the Kids Next Door. It hasn't been populated in years, but its full of still-functional tech that just got left behind. With it, Dib's able to power-up the teleporter technology and now the Mystery Kids can come together whenever they want. You need to stand perfectly still for like five minutes for the teleporter to work, so it isn't a "get out of danger free" plot device.

Seems like a REALLY important development to happen offscreen and go totally unmentioned, right? Well… I thought of it retroactively, so, whoops! But it's fine. We'll just have to make a flashback comic later where the kids find it.

So, from now on, everything that happens in the comic happens here, in Year 2.

What's your headcanons on the Reverse Falls character roles and/or relations (like romantic, family, platonic)? There's lots of variations among different people's personal RF AUs, and I'm interested to see the nuances and variations of yours.

For example, are Pacifica and Gideon cousins, siblings, best friends, strangers to each other or something else? Do the young Gleeful twins have another sibling, do they have parents, do they live permanently in Reverse Falls? What's Stanford's role? Is he a manipulative mastermind, a scamming conartist just trying to make money from the Tent, a loving Grunkle? Who is related to who and who are best friends, or lovers, or enemies?

Pacifica and Gideon are cousins but often refer to eachother as best friends for plot sake

The gleeful twins (mainly Mason) are spoiled little rats and a bit mean to will but not like straight up abuse. Mabel is a bit more chill around Will. Will sees them like family or friends.

Stanford is a piece of shit. The gleeful twins were put into his custody after their parents were shit and shit got worse. Stanford is a con artist that uses the twins passion for entertainment to fuel his bank account. He often leaves the twins alone with Will so they’re Will’s problem now. And due to this constant neglecting the gleeful twins have gotten more aggressive and rude towards everyone around them for attention. Stanford is the one that abuses Will as well

Nobody’s really in love

Mabel and Pacifica are a bit complicated. there’s a possible plot idea where Pacifica tries to be Mabel’s friend, Mabel tries to make Pacifica more like her and separates her from her own cousin, Pacifica speaks out, Mabel gets possessive (literally), and shit goes down Mabel is almost exposed but conveniently dodges all irresponsibility, Mabel hates Gideon forever because he interfered.

The gleeful twins live permanently in reverse falls and managed to drop out of school so they could line their grunkle’s pockets.

oh yeah and Stanford maybe gets fucking killed at the end by Will but that’s a maybe

How would you rate their pain tolerances?

Dipper: A freaking wolf chewed on his leg. He feels NOTHING!

Mabel: She has a pretty high pain tolerance seeing as how she bedazzled her face. Ow.

Coraline: She played Hockey I think? She should have a decent pain tolerance. Especially when she is on adrenaline.

Wybie: I think he has an average pain tolerance but I am willing to discuss this one. His posture makes me question it…

Norman: This kid got freaking shocked and fell from the roof and got up to keep going to save the day! Chuck him up there with Dipper and Mabel!

Neil: I want to say he has a low pain tolerance. He can get stuff done if he’s hurting, but most of the time he’s done for if the task isn’t important.

Raz: Boy is a circus acrobat. I don’t think his pain tolerance is low. Not as crazy as the Pines Twins, but he can handle some pain.

Lili: I think she is around Wybie level? Maybe a touch higher.

Wirt: I think he has a decent pain tolerance. It’s not insanely high or anything but Wirt trips and falls a lot, gets smacked by stuff, jumps through boarded windows, stuff like that, and just gets back up like it was next to nothing. That takes some tolerance.

Greg: Greg doesn’t deal with that stuff as much, in fact if you look in the show, Wirt protects Greg during some of that stuff like the window. Greg does have some tolerance though as you can tell in episode one. I think he has a lower tolerance due to his age, but I don’t think it’s zero.

Anne: She’s got to have a decent tolerance, or an ability to push through pain. She was walking around Amphibia with one shoe!

Marcy: Her tolerance has got to be higher. Maybe like Wirt. She’s clumsy and probably has walked into a locker. Also there is the axolotling…

Sasha: She probably has Pines Twin pain tolerance or a bit lower.

Luz: This girl I think has a Dipper level pain tolerance. I don’t remember why, but something makes me think she does.

you frowned softly up at her.

“you still think that the universe really wants anything- from any of us?”

“don’t you?” you huffed a laugh, rubbing the back of your neck as you looked down at the puddles under you, they allowed you to see out there.

“i~ try not to think too hard!~”

“so it would seem.” you frowned again at her words. brushing off your skirt.

“know this, starlight.” you jolt, turning. she’s there, right next to you.

“your brother and i? we’re not so different. we both fight for what we believe is right, that pursuit only leads to one thing.” she spoke, and it makes your stomach curl.

you responded anyway.

“mhm, to destiny, right?” you chime, smiling warily.

“no.” she let herself drift from you, the ache in your chest building as she let herself fade from this plane.

“to pain.” and she was gone, and the ache built and the brightness of the void grew.

you blink awake to distant cries. pulling yourself up slowly, chest burning. you huff sharply.

the crying sounded like MK- you could hear the others trying to comfort him.

you stood slowly, a hand coming to your aching side. it was a slow, tedious walk through the rubble to get too your brother.

“Xiaotian?” you called, and watching as he whips to face you, tears dripping down his cheeks.

there are wisps of blue falling off your shoulders, your eyes such a bright shade of it now.

your brother still recognizes you, and his wail is a testament to that.

your quickly scooped up into a bone crushing hug, his wailing all you could hear. you didn’t mind, as your reached up to curl into his hold.

Summary: At some point, Coraline realized she’s awake. And no one else was.

At some point, Coraline realized she’s awake. It was a gentle awakening. No grating beeps to interrupt something bizarrely pleasant, no terrible monster to launch her back into reality. Just a sudden realization that she’s no longer sleeping for no good reason.

Her eyes were still closed. Static buzzed faintly from somewhere in front of her. She’s warm, and comfy, and wrapped in something thick and soft. Something’s pressing against her to her left, pinning her left arm to her side, and a different thing has wrapped around her right arm on her lap, holding it in place. It didn’t make sense to panic, didn’t feel right somehow, but the sensation reminded her of being restrained, of being helpless, alone, weak, useless, and it opened a big enough pit in her stomach that she opened her eyes.

It’s dark, until her eyes adjusted. Static’s coming from the tv - cheap, old, and miraculously still functioning - casting a dim glow over her and the rest of the room. She’s in the center of a large, fading yellow, slightly musky, very familiar recliner. The recliner that should be thrown out by now but nobody’s heartless enough to do it.

The thing to her left pinning her arm was Wybie. He’s sleeping soundly, leaning bodily against Coraline, lips parted like he’s a snorer, but he’s not. The other thing holding her right arm was Lili. She’s sleeping too, her head laid across Coraline’s lap, her hands wrapped possessively around Coraline’s arm, cuddling with it like it’s her personal teddy bear. It’s goddamn cute. They both were. And then there was Raz. Sleeping too - sleeping real good, in fact - but you wouldn’t think so, because the little monkey’s somehow balanced himself on the recliner’s right arm, as if he hasn’t already proven himself to be one of the best acrobats in the world. Showoff. 

There were four shapes at the base of the recliner too - not actually on it but still leaning against it. Two with identical brown hair, one with curly red, and one with pointy ash-black, like the hair’s a spike trap or a drawer full of forks. Fork hair’s in the middle, flanked on each side by the brown hairs, while curly’s lying against her left leg, buried under the biggest, ugliest, comfiest, warmest Christmas sweater you’ll ever see. 

And then it all came back to her.

Winter break. She and the rest of the MK somehow managed to convince their parents to spend one weekend in Gravity Falls. Soos was all too happy to let them bunk in the Shack. Raz got his tongue stuck on the totem pole. Disgusting, delicious pizza for dinner. Neil dared himself to stuff twenty marshmallows in his mouth. Someone brought out a Monopoly set. Mabel almost killed Wybie. They picked straws on who got to choose what to watch for movie night and goddamn Dipper pulled the short straw. Made them watch some ‘intellectual’ nonsense that she and the rest had a grand old time roasting while the little twerp sat there fuming. Guess the movie outlasted them in the end, and no one bothered to get up before passing out.

Coraline smiled. Good thing no one did. It’s nice. It’s more than nice. It’s more than what words could describe. If Coraline’s feeling particularly sappy, and she was, then she’ll say she could stay like this forever.

But she knew she’ll regret it in the morning if she let Wybie sleep on her arm and Neil on her leg all night. So she slid her left arm out from between her and Wybie and wrapped it around his shoulder to pull him in closer. Close enough that the matted ends of his hair tickled his left cheek. Then she wiggled her left leg free from behind Neil. The little bundle of fabric and love toppled over to one of the twins. Someone mumbled an incoherent phrase and stirred.

“Sorry,” Coraline whispered.

“Coraline?” A voice asked. Norman’s. Not surprising. He’s always been a light sleeper.

“Hey. Don’t mind me. Go back to sleep.” 

Norman grunted. Adjusted how he’s leaning against the recliner a bit. Coraline surprised herself by how much she wished he didn’t just mess everything up. “What time is it?”

“Don’t know.” And frankly, don’t care. 

“Shouldn’t we move to our rooms?” Honestly, they should. Soos put a lot of work preparing those rooms.

But still, Coraline giggled. No offense to Soos. “And ruin this?”  

Norman must’ve thought no one saw him, but Coraline did. That cheeky little glance to the twin on his right. So that one’s obviously Dipper. 

If only Norman could see the smirk on Coraline’s face. “Come on. You’re comfy enough.”

“Yeah,” Norman agreed after a moment of silence. He leaned back against the recliner, relaxing the best he could in his position, a sneaky arm winding around Dipper to pull him just an inch closer. “Good night, Coraline.”

“Smooth,” Coraline said, and greatly enjoyed how hard Norman tried not to crumple in embarrassment. “Night.”

Not that she’s in any position to make fun of Norman for taking advantage of the situation. She’s perfectly aware of how hypocritical she’s being, as she pulled Wybie in just a tad bit closer. Only difference was nobody’s watching her. That’s Norman’s mistake. 

With her lips curled into a small smile, Coraline laid her head back, closed her eyes, and not very long after, returned to sleep, wrapped in a cocoon of warm bodies, of friendship and love, of bonds that has been tested by fire and emerged on the other side stronger, tighter, unbreakable. A cocoon to chase all the monsters and nightmares away.

The MK crew held a private Secret Santa event just between us crewmembers, and this is what I made! Would have made it longer, maybe added some extra details, but I ended up not having as much time as I thought to work on it. Hope y’all can still enjoy it. It’s just a short and fluffy thing to end the year on.
