the parent trap
the masterpost
“So,” Remus says slowly. “If your Dad is my Dad…”
“...and your Pa is my Papa…”
Remus stares at the seam of the wedding photo, made whole again after more than a decade. His Pa, Patton, familiar with his cowboy-handsome, weather-beaten face and his dimpled grin and his big, calloused hand resting over his new husband’s, even if Remus has never seen him look this smitten ever.
“And we’re both born on October 11… then, Roman. You and I are… like… brothers.”
And his Dad—Janus—smiling coyly, handsome in the way of magazine models, so completely a stranger to Remus with just this scrap of a photograph to serve as any way to know him, really know him. The way Roman knows him. The way Remus has been dying to know him all his life.
“Remus,” Roman breathes out, disbelieving. “We aren’t just brothers. We’re twins.”
Remus wonders, in a daze, if seeing the opposite life he could have had is as strange for Roman as it is for him… if they’d just been switched at birth, it’s the life Remus could have had, knowing his Dad instead of his Pa, but then…
But then it clicks.
“Roman,” he says, turning to grin at his brother—his brother! “I have a completely perfect, totally awesome idea!”

You Do Not Have to be Good - moceit
Tumblr media
Patton hates alcohol. Not particularly for a moral reason, it just tastes godawful to him. But he came to Janus's room for a distraction, and goshdarnit he'll take it. He cringes through a sip as they sit on the floor, and Janus laughs.
"Oh, Patton, it's cider. Barely any alcohol at all, and you can barely stomach even that." As if to prove a point, Janus swings back his bottle and takes a sip so large he gulps audibly. Patton can't help a small giggle, even as bad as he feels.
"Gosh, Jan, I don't know how you and Logan handle this stuff."
"Simple. We're not man-babies."
Patton laughs and lightly punches Janus's shoulder, coaxing the smallest of smiles from the other man. He settles back against the wall. Janus isn't used to guests, aside from one who isn't a fan of sitting 'properly,' so he has no chairs strewn around his room the way the light sides do.
Janus tilts the liquid around in his bottle with a sigh. "Care to tell me what brought you to me today? My room isn't exactly one of our typical 'spots'."
"Oh! Oh, nothing special or anything, just checking up on you," he says, flashing a winning smile.
"How many times are we going to visit each other before you remember you can't lie to me?" Janus states bluntly, not looking at Patton at all, his eyes fixed on the blank wall across from them.
"Whu- uh- lying? I'm not-"
"How many times will I have to say that sentence? You can not follow 'you can't lie to me' up with a lie, Patton, that's not how this works."
"Look I- I don't really want to talk about it. I came to hang out with you, I don't wanna just-"
"So you're going to talk to one of the others then, yes?" Janus's eyes flit over the fading dark blue in Patton's hair. "How about Logan? I'm sure he'd totally be helpful here, I mean, being so good with his emotions."
Patton frowns at him and Janus sighs, rewording. "All I mean is, you don't talk to anyone else, so it stands to reason that if I don't get you to spit it out, you'll keep 'doing your thing' and only ever talking about how you feel at a surface level while letting the pressure below build and build until you blow up. Am I wrong?"
Patton blinks at him, and then turns away, curling his legs up towards his body and squeezing his free hand's nails into his palm. He's taken to doing that lately, though he doesn't know why. Someone says something that hurts, and he digs his nails deep into his skin or bites his lip so hard it bleeds, then the pain is gone. Dig, dig, gone. "That's not very kind, Janus."
Janus shrugs. The sun is beginning to set, and the room is going golden, the dark walls being cast in the shadows of Janus's blinds. "If someone was never anything but kind, they'd be a liar. I don't want to lie to you forever."
"You don't?"
"Oh wow, yeah, sound shocked about that, sure." Janus rolls his eyes, but he doesn't look angry. "Patton, it's stupid to keep going like you are. Look, if anyone can keep secrets, it's you and me - I'm the best one to talk to here. None of the others seem smart enough to notice how messed up you've been."
Patton cringes, and takes a drink of his cider, which makes him cringe harder. "I'm not... that bad, am I? That obvious?"
"It's pretty bad, dad," Janus sighs. He finally looks at the other man, meeting his eyes. "I promise, okay? And I don't do that lightly. I won't speak a word of whatever is bothering you."
Patton's brow furrows, and he breathes out slowly. He digs his nails into his palm again. Breathes again. Just the offer of talking is threatening to bust down year old dams, but perhaps Janus is right, and this needs to happen. And... he did promise. He's never done that before.
"It's not exactly simple to explain... I guess it's just- it's like- I'm-" Patton sighs, frustrated. "I just don't know anymore if- if I'll ever get it right."
"Right?"
"Being morality. Being... good." Patton's voice strains, and he wipes at his face. "I don't know if I can ever be good, be good enough, be good at my job. I've been messing up nearly everything lately! I can't keep Thomas good, and when I do try to keep him good, I end up being an overbearing jerk. I can't seem to make Roman happy, or Virgil anymore, and," Patton plays with the fringe tips of blue in his hair, almost subconsciously, "I can't make Logan feel good either. We used to be so, so close. Worked through all of our issues, we were really good friends! But he's been so- look, I know he says he doesn't feel anything, but I can tell he's feeling something! And he won't tell any of us about it."
Janus drinks, reserving information as he always does. Patton is upset enough, now's not the time.
"All I've ever wanted was to be good," his voice breaks, and he clears his throat, blinking back hot tears. "Ever since I've existed, I've wanted to be good. What would it mean for Thomas if his morality isn't good?! Maybe you were right, I'm just pointing him towards hell. I'm not doing my job right. How can I be messing up so much? I used to be the one who the others looked at to know everything..." He bites his lip hard, but it doesn't do anything this time. He's crying now, wiping the sleeve of his cat hoodie across his face furiously.
"Who says you have to be good?"
"What?"
Janus sighs, sipping his drink. "'You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.' Mary Oliver. Goodness isn't necessary one hundred and twenty-five percent of the time. You're an animal like any other, and you only need do what makes you happy, just like any other. You're not some divine being above the ability to screw up or be sad."
"You and Thomas's religious sensibilities are very tied together. You're stuck on this idea that as morality, you can only ever have good and pure ideas. You can never make mistakes, and you can never be wrong. Look, sure, we're no humans, but you're a piece of a human, and they're kind of renowned for their mistake making. I've told you before, Patton. If you're making a genuine effort to do better, then your apologies mean enough. You've repented. You didn't even need to, but you do anyway. Because you're good, as much as a side can be. You're so good you make me sick sometimes. I was being a dick when I said you're pointing him towards hell, being a dick is kind of my thing. I don't think you're even capable of knowingly being a bad person."
Patton feels tears pour down his face, staring sightlessly at his bottle as Janus rants. He's drawn blood from his lip. The words are making some deep piece of him ache worse than he has in years. Without thinking, he sets his head on Janus's shoulder. Janus barely blinks, leaning into him as he continues.
"You do make the others happy, Patton. They love you so much it's gross. But they have issues as well. Issues that are getting worse as Thomas's mental health is plummeting. All pieces of Thomas have gripes and qualms right now, I don't understand you all's strange insistence on everything being fine. Want me to lie? Everything is just fine! Why, nothing is eating at any of you, and you're at the peak of your lives!" Janus sighs, eyes closing. "It's okay to experience pain, you know. It doesn't make you bad. Nor does making mistakes. It makes you a living thing, as caught up in your own world and worries as every other living thing. You're doing okay, Patton. You'll never be perfect, but I watch you do everything you can every day. For crying out loud, let that soft animal of 'you' catch a break."
Patton sniffs, letting out a shaking sigh. "Why does hearing all that hurt me?"
"Because you've never heard it before, probably. Has anyone, ever, at all, told you to give yourself a break?"
"I... I guess not, not really. I don't know. I don't feel like I deserve it."
"I say you deserve it. If you won't listen to yourself, listen to me. Listen to a... friend."
Patton nearly physically startles at that word coming from Janus. "Friend?"
"If you make me repeat myself we're never having these visits again, watch it."
"We're friends?" Patton lifts his head, grinning despite his tear streaked face. Janus makes a frustrated noise, his face going red, but he lets Patton hug him nonetheless. Patton laughs, despite it all, holding Janus against his chest. The parts of his heart that were aching feel suddenly wrapped in warmth, like a heating pad on a pained muscle. And as Janus sets aside his drink and properly returns the hug, Patton's heart feels so many things, but mostly, at least for now, it feels at peace.
"Are you going to actually give yourself a rest, or did literally all of that go in one ear and out the other?"
Patton laughs. "Thanks, Janus. Really, thank you. Um. Not going to tell anyone still, right?"
"Of course," Janus places a hand on his heart and holds the other up in a pledge. "We both have trouble verbalizing emotions anyways."
"Can't say I'm surprised! Get it? Can't say?"
"Yes, Patton, I got it," Janus rolls his eyes, but he's smiling. "You know I just hate puns."
"Liar liar!"

Warnings: background violence and murder, religious imagery (written by a very non religious person who’s certain that there’s better words she could have been using but she doesn’t know them and trying to google them just gets her unhelpful Bible study websites), the inherent gay hornyness that comes from the religious imagery
~~~START~~~
When the invaders came, Virgil watched from the temple steps with the rest of the priestesses. The temple of Truth and Lies sat atop a hill overlooking the city and the sea beyond; they had seen the invaders’ ships even as the watchmen sent up the alarm.
The priestesses watched, uncaring, as the city’s ships sank under the assault of the invaders’. They watched, unmoving, as the invaders reached the ports and descended upon the city. They watched, unaffected, as the city began to burn — their duties were to their Gods, not to the city from which some of them had been nursed. Even as citizens fled the city on foot, the priestesses of Truth and Lies watched steadfast from the temple steps. Some citizens begged to shelter in the temple, but only those who bore tokens of the temple’s Gods were permitted.
Not until the Grand Temple of The Twins in the center of the city began to smoke did the priestesses stir. In the past, invaders to the city had left the temples untouched, fearing the retaliation of the Gods, but these invaders… they were barbarians. The temple would not keep the priestesses safe.
Some of the priestess fled, forsaking their Gods and deciding their chances would be better as blasphemers out in the wilderness. The remaining priestesses, Virgil included, retreated into the temple and shut the stone doors.
Inside the temple, patrons and priestesses alike rushed about in panic. Some tried to arm themselves with the ceremonial armament that normally hung from the wall as tributes from the city’s greatest warriors, some prayed at the feet of the two twenty-foot stone statues of the Gods for their delivery from peril, and some drank the sacrificial wine, fermented in the temple from the finest grapes grown in the valley beyond the temple for the Gods to enjoy as they may, hoping to be so senseless by the time death came for them that they would be none the wiser at the end. Virgil watched the blasphemy impassionately.
Unlike most of his fellow priestesses, Virgil had been brought to the temple as a babe, he had been tribute to his Gods, and he was raised on nothing but Them. He did not try to arm himself, nor did he beg for his life or defile his Gods’ tribute, instead, he wandered deeper into the temple. He ignored the sounds of running feet and the fearful yelling and came to a halt only once he had reached the mosaic tile fresco of The Snake and The Frog, there he fell on his knees and prayed. The fresco was not generally considered to be a formal prayer site, but it was where Virgil had always felt closest to his Gods.
He did not pray for his life, for his life was worth nothing if it was not spent in worship of his Gods. He did not pray for the city, for the city was worth nothing whether it was populated by his people or by the invaders’. He did not pray for his fellow priestesses, for they had already disrespected their Gods.
No, Virgil prayed for the temple. He prayed that no invader would defile what belonged to his Gods, that the temple would stand no matter how much fire the invaders brought with them, that the temple would stand long after the invaders perished, whether by war or old age.
And as the invaders reached the temple’s stone doors and began to beat on them, he continued to pray. He prayed that his Gods would always have tribute and that their cult would go on long after Virgil and the priestesses were cut down.
As the stone doors gave and the screaming began, Virgil prayed that the beauty of the temple not be diminished as it was decorated with the blood of the slain.
Screams and footsteps echoed around Virgil, but he did not move from his supplication. He was afraid of the invaders and he was afraid of dying, but more than that, he was afraid of abandoning his Gods. He remained, unmoving before the fresco, quiet prayers falling from his lips.
“Well, well, well. What have we here?”
Virgil could not stop his flinch of fear as a dark voice croaked with glee behind him, but he continued his prayers.
“Beg your false gods for their mercy,” the invader laughed, seizing Virgil by the hair with one hand and bringing his knife to his throat with the other. “They cannot save you.”
Virgil squeezed his eyes shut and added one last prayer that his blood would only add to the fresco’s beauty, if his Gods allowed it to sully Their imagery at all.
The screams in the temple behind him seemed to change pitch as he waited for his executioner to strike. But no strike came.
The invader’s laughter was cut off with a strangled gasp as the knife fell to the ground near Virgil’s knees with a clatter. Then the hand untwisted from Virgil’s hair, and a body fell to the ground with a heavy thump!
Virgil’s eyes snapped open as a cool, gloved hand cupped his cheek. Before him, clad in black and yellow vestments, stood a man– no, not a man. A God. His God, to whom his life was but a humble tribute.
His God — Janus, God of lies, secrets, and selfishness — stood before him in the guise of a half-man, half-snake. The human half of His face was all sharp angles and smooth skin as though cut from the same stone as His statue in the temple’s gallery, and the snake half of His face was decorated with a mosaic of yellow and green scales that put the fresco behind Him to shame. His human eye was brown as the bark of the trees in the forest, as the jasper inset in the temple walls, as the dirt from which all life grew, His snake eye was as yellow as the sun and almost seemed twice as bright.
A smile graced His lips as He swiped His thumb gently against Virgil’s cheekbone.
“As stunning as your blood would look decorating Our temple,” He said in a smooth voice that was almost as mesmerizing as His eyes and was sparked with humor and affection, the source of which Virgil could not fathom. “It would not be worth even half as much as it is coursing through your lovely veins.”
Virgil blinked dumbly, awed and confused by the emergence of his God.
The God smiled a little wider and reached for Virgil’s hands, still clasped together in prayer, with His free hand. He pulled Virgil to his feet before snaking His arm around Virgil’s waist and pulling him against the God’s stone-like body, trapping his clasped hand between them.
“Look at you, precious,” the God cooed reverently. “So devote, even when Death has you in Her grasp.”
A scream started just down the passageway before being cut off suddenly. Unable to help himself, Virgil tried to turn to look, but his God’s hand held fast upon his cheek.
The God’s smile lost some of its humor but none of its affection. “Now, now, precious, Patton will be done soon and then you won’t need to worry any longer.”
None of this made any sense to Virgil, he was but a speck of dust to his Gods, something to be washed away when he became too much of a nuisance, not something to be held close and called precious.
Janus continued to smile affectionately at Virgil and pet his cheek gently as the screams and cries died down until the temple finally sat silent once more but for Virgil’s quiet breathing.
“I hope you’re not planning on keeping him all to yourself, love,” another voice, this one light and musical, broke the silence from close behind Virgil.
Janus held Virgil’s face fast, but allowed His own eyes to lift to view the newcomer with the same affection He had been sending Virgil’s way.
“Of course not, darling,” He answered, rubbing His hand up and down Virgil’s spine possessively. “He is Ours after all.”
Another body, softer and warmer than Janus’s pressed into Virgil’s back. “Our most devoted priestess,” the voice cooed affectionately. “Safe in his salvation.”
“I-I didn’t ask for salvation,” Virgil stuttered quietly, afraid to contradict his Gods, but even more afraid to let them misunderstand his prayers.
“Of course you did!” Patton — God of truth, morality, and selflessness — exclaimed, turning Virgil around in Janus’s grip. Janus allowed His hand to drop from Virgil’s face, but His other hand stayed firm around his waist, resting on Virgil’s stomach as Virgil faced His Husband. “You asked that no invader defile what was Ours.”
Patton had chosen to dress Himself in full human form and blue vestments, though His height might be pushing what man could reach on their own. He chose softer lines and a fuller form than His Husband had; His eyes sparkled blue as the ocean as it melts into sky, and were twice as deep as either. His gaze, trained firmly on Virgil despite the fact that at his back was His Husband, was full of a naked affection that made Virgil’s knees weak — not that it mattered, the way Janus held him firmly.
“You are Ours, aren’t you?” The God asked, though He clearly already knew the answer.
“Yes,” Virgil answered. Though the appearance of his Gods confused him, of this he was certain: he was Theirs, however They wanted him.
Patton smiled and cupped Virgil’s face in both of His large, soft hands. “Then as long as Our cult goes on, no harm shall befall you, and as long as you are Ours, Our cult shall go on.”
“I am always Yours,” Virgil swore. “My life will always be spent in devotion to Your divinity.”
Patton’s smile grew wider, and he leaned down to kiss Virgil on the forehead.
“Our divinity now, precious,” Janus corrected him gently, though Virgil did not understand what difference there was.
“Our divinity,” Patton agreed, leaning over Virgil to kiss His Husband. “Yours, Mine, and Our most devoted priestess’s.”
Then He leaned down once more, but instead of kissing Virgil on the forehead, He claimed his lips instead. For just the briefest moment, Virgil worried about what His Husband would do, but Janus gently thumbed at Virgil’s stomach and rested His free hand on Patton’s hip, pulling His Husband even closer, and pressing Virgil more firmly between Them.
Only when Patton slipped one hand from Virgil’s face and used it to hold to His Husband did Virgil allow himself to sink into the kiss, to allow himself to become lost in this new form of prayer to his Gods.
And when Janus grew impatient and turned him to face Him once more, Virgil prayed to Him as well.
In the temple of Truth and Lies, which no power could reduce to rubble be it man or beast or time, lived a priestess who prayed to his Gods with his every breath in every way he knew how.
I say my favorite fanfiction trope is Fake Dating to hide the fact that my actual favorite trope is "Two teachers/professors with wildly different personalities are married to each other, but their students don't realize. Instead the students speculate that they may be cheating on their spouses with one another so rumors spread across the campus." And I just don't know how to easily explain this concept to people.
Anyways... Moceit AU where they-
Blood Stained
Pairing: Logince and Moceit
Tw: Blood, fighting, yelling, bruises, swearing, threats, bullying, homophobia, hospital, Whump Roman
Au: Family/High School
Summary: Roman won't just watch around and let Logan get harrassed by this jerk at their school, but it backfires when hes caught in a severe fight and must be driven to the hospital. @spacedouterri @lavenderfoxboy
"Okay, let me get this straight," Janus hissed, hands gripping tight on his wheel. He drummed his hands against the leather, glaring to his side towards Roman. "My son, gets himself into a fist fight and I have to drive him to the hospital and all he cares about is missing his REHEARSAL?!" He scolds in disbelief.
Roman tapped his cheek, blood staining his fingers as he did so. He tilted his head up in an attempt to sway the dark, red blood dripping from his nose. "I would have called Dad if I knew you'd take me on a guilt trip," he mumbled.
Janus scoffed, shaking his head, "Roman!" he yelled, "You're lucky I agreed to pick you up, Patton would be freaking out on you just as much, he'd just be gentler," he corrects, rolling his eyes. "Care to tell me what happened? Either of you,"he prompts, raising an eyebrow.
Remus tossed a piece of popcorn into his mouth, grinning ear to ear, "I have no fucking clue what happened, for once I'm innocent!" He leans forward, sticking his head between the two front seats. "Roman?" Remus's smile quickly fades upon looking at Roman, who's usual was charm seemed completely drained. "...Ro bro?"
Roman's gaze fell towards the window, watching as they sped past the surrounding cars. A breeze followed their car. "Some asshole was bothering Logan," he muttered, barely audible above a whisper.
"What was that?" Janus blinked, taking a sharp turn onto the hospital's street. Silence lingered in the car, Janus tuning the music off, the only sound being the faint shuffling of the car's wheels against the ground.
Janus sighed softly, "I'm only strict on you because I don't want you to be like how I was at your age," he explained. "I was an amazing kid, smart but got in alot of trouble. I didn't really know how to protest in a good way."
Janus placed his hand over his son's, lips quirking to force a somber smile,"We just want you to be safe. Both of you, " he insists. He perked up as his ring tone blared from his phone, his muscled tensed scrunching his shoulders close together. He exhaled, "It's just your dad, Remus can you talk to him and explain whats happening?" he asks, rubbing his temples.
Just A few hours prior, Roman found himself leaned against his locker, humming softly to himself while he waited for Logan to come over. He knew Logan had a free period and frankly Roman did not feel like going to biology, so he'd agreed to meet up with him for at least a few minutes.
Roman blinked, glancing down towards the clock again with a raised eyebrow. "That's weird, nerd is never late."
He instinctly reached for his phone in his pocket, narrowing his eyes in confusion.
Roman: Hey Specs you coming? Or Did you decide to completely ditch me wowww I can't believe this. 😭😞
He snickered to himself as he typed, though he couldn't ignore the worry welling up inside him.
Minutes began to pass, the worry growing inside Roman the longer he stood in the halls, gazing around to find Logan. This was EXTREMELY out of character for Logan. While Roman found the insistence to keep a schedule for literally everything (even hallway roaming)quite annoying, he certainly didn't enjoy when Logan wasn't being himself.
Suddenly, it felt as if time stood still, the silence lingering in surrounding air. It was quiet, an uncomfortable sense of quiet before a loud slam echoed through the halls. Roman felt his chest tighten, he jolted up, eyes growing wide. He bolted towards the direction of the noise, praying internally that Logan's sudden disappearance had nothing to do with this.
Roman froze infront of the door, gritting his teeth anxiously. "Come on Roman, you're a prince," he murmured under his breath. "You gotta find out whats going on."
He slowly creaked the door open ever so slightly,peering through the small crack. His breath hitched at the sight of the situation, exactly what he'd been dreading.
Logan was pressed up against the wall, his breathing heavy and quick paced. He gulped, swallowing the spit that was closing up his throat. "I mean what I said, you're a pathetic homophobe who can't even win a debate," he spat, "And your threats are only confirming your lack of intelligence."
The boy, who Roman couldn't seem to recognize at first, glared at Logan. He was grumbling something along the lines of killing him.
Roman pounced up, tossing the door open, thoughts spiralling around his head. Everything in his mind was so blurred, he knew whoever this kid was could probably beat the shit out of him, but he also knew he wanted to protect Logan more than anything else in the moment.
He rushed up behind him, tugging on his shirt an yanking him away from Logan. "Leave him alone," he growled. Once he was face to face with him, Roman was able to properly recognize him in under a second: Adam Dotson. His scraggy, short red hair along with piercing blue eyes were both easy to spot.
Adam cackled, "Oh look here! Your fairy boyfriend came along," he teased, shoving Roman backwards leaving him stumbling to catch himself. "The fuck are you doing here, Adelio?"
Roman narrowed his eyes,"Are you deaf? I said leave him alone, " he fumed, voice stern and low. He felt his heart pound against his chest, heart rate increasing rapidly. He stared ahead at Adam, watching him crack his knuckles and return his glare.
Adam rolled his eyes, kicking Roman in his shin, "You think I'm scared of you?" He scoffed, "Tell your gayass boytoy that he needs to fuck off on talking to me too," he retorted, watching Roman clasp onto his leg.
Roman gasped, foundering backwards once again. He inhaled, folding his hand into a fist and he swore his heart was beating so fast he could hear the thundering in his eardrums. Roman took a breath before stepping forward and swinging towards Adam, his knuckles grazed the side of his cheek.
Adam sucked in a breath, bracing against the impact of Roman's punch before swiftly punching him back, hitting him square in his nose.
A trail of blood trickled down Roman's face, and he winced squeezed his eyes closed for a moment. The pain shot through his entire face, burning against his nose.
"Roman!" Logan shrieked.
Roman spat out a chunk of blood, leaving his mouth with a copper tang taste. He ducked. Roman slammed his fist into Adam's stomach. His knuckles pulsed, yet he still kept hitting as much as he could.
Adam groaned, bending over with a heave. His vision began to blur, barely able to make out the tan arm lunging at him again. He stepped back, cracking his knuckles.
Roman lifted his hand to swing at Adam again before he felt a tight grip around his wrist. Hes swung to the side. Blood swishing around his ears. Roman inhales before pain stings against his face once again, spreading throughout his entire body. His head spun and before his senses regain control, he's slammed against the wall.
All Roman could grasp was the imense pain. His knees shook, wobbling underneath him. Another punch hitting him, faint yelling in the background. A swift knee to his stomach. He kicked at Adam in an attempt to push him away. The air around him felt scarce.
Roman rubbed his head, which was splitting with pain. He swallowed, taking another final swing at Adam before he stumbled back again. Roman blinked, the objects around him finally returning to sight.
"That all you got, Princey?" exasperated Adam, wiping the blood resting on his lips. He lunged forward, leaping towards him. He snarled, grabbing at him.
Roman reached forward to push Adam back. He held his arms up to frantically block his face from all of Adam's swings. He elbowed Adam in his side, the closest possible range without having to remove his defense. An ache in his arms, white hot with pain. An attempted punch towards Adam's face, eventually making contact with his shoulder instead.
The impact wouldn't stop, constant punches against his skin. Roman gasped for air, tensing all throughout his body. He grimaced, bracing for the impact of more burning sensations before Adam was suddenly flung off of him. Roman recoiled, bending over and trying not to throw up. The world around him began to spin, and he felt dizzier than he'd ever felt before. He collasped onto the floor, rest tugging at his eyelids. Blood splattered all over his face, bruises scattered on other parts of his body.
Logan frantically snatched Roman's bag as the teacher escorted Adam out of the room, scolding him as she did so. He searched through his emergency contacts before clicking one of Roman's dads' numbers, a complete gamble at whether he was calling Janus or Patton; though it really didn't matter. He just needed Roman to get help.
Logan ran his fingers through his hair, shaking his head. He'd never intended to put Roman in a situation of harm this intense. He slowly approaced his boyfriend, eyes wide with concern. "Are you alright? Can you hear me?" He asks gently, Roman's phone vibrating in his hands.
Roman swallowed, he opened his mouth to speak but a bit of blood began to spill out."I'm sorry Specs," he wheezed. He felt a bit of the tension in his muscles fade as Logan pressed his hands on his wounds.
Roman held a tissue against his nose, bandages now plastered over his knuckles, chin, and parts of his jaw. He felt a lump tighten in his throat, a puddle underneath his eyes. Everything hurt possibly even more now that that fight had finished, adrenaline worn off.
"Wheres my baby boy?!" Patton sobbed, rushing into hospital room where Roman sat, frowningly deeply. "Oh Roman," he huffed, kneeling beside his bed. He softly cuped Roman's face, face worn with worry. "How are you doing?"
A miserable laugh escaped Roman, "Well the doctor said I most likely broke my nose," he answers, "So a prince is thriving," he sulked. "I think I hurt my jaw too, and my arms are all bruised."
Patton rubbed his leg, what looked to be the only part of Roman's body that wasn't covered in bandages. "Your dad told me what happened, or at least what you told him about what happened," he sighed, "But you're gonna be okay, I know it! You're my strong prince, always have been." He insisted, though that was partially to calm his own anxieties. The moment Remus called him from the car while Janus drove Roman to the hospital, he felt sick to his stomach.
Normally, that alone would help ease Roman's worries but right now he just felt even worse. If he was actually a strong prince he'd be able to properly defend his boyfriend, instead of losing miserably against Adam fucking Dotson. But Roman loved his parents, and he especially didn't want Patton to feel worse. So, he cracked a smile,nodding along. "Thanks Dad, I love you."
Patton remained kneeled next to his bed, "I love you too Ro, we all do," he exhaled, "None of us want you getting in fights and hurting yourself."
Roman's smile faltered for a moment, a frown tugging at his lips. The lump in his throat tightened, his voice quivering as he spoke. He shook his head, desperately trying to hold back tears. "Is Logan here?" he asks, he really wanted to talk to him now that he wasn't being punched in the face.
Patton glanced towards the door, "Yeah, yeah he's here kiddo. He drove himself here when he found out you were sent in," he confirms, his voice light and soft.
Roman gaze followed Patton's towards the door, where he could see through the window Remus, Janus, and Logan seated right outside,waiting. "Can you ask him to come in? I royally need to talk to him," he requests, rubbing the bandage sat on his chin.
Patton placed a kiss onto Roman's forehead, gently patting his head."Of course, I think I need to help your dad fill out paperwork anyway, " he watched Roman fidget with his bandages or press his hands against his wounds and he swore his heart shattered.
Logan slowly trotted into the room, creaking Roman's door open and gently closing it behind him. His eyes widened, darting to all of the bandages scattered around Roman, and if his body wasn't damaged it was likely covered by a dark, growing bruise.
Logan sighed softly, approaching him with caution. He cleared his throat, "Hi," he greets shyly.
Roman couldn't help but laugh, chuckling under his breath, "Greetings, Specs," he replies, setting the tissue down for a moment. Luckily the bleeding on his nose had begun to subside, but it was still broken. "Listen I'm sorry, I should have been able to protect you better than I did. I mean I'm your boyfriend and not only that but I hold myself like some sort of prince but I can't even win a fight," he rambled on, tears slowly began to fall as he spoke.
Roman sniffled, frantically shaking his head and wiping his eyes. They wouldn't subside though, streaming down his cheeks.
Logan's frown deepened, he grabbed Logan's hands, rubbing his thumb against Roman's hands. "Roman please," he reaches over with his free hand to wipe his tears. He shook his head, "Don't apologize, frankly I feel physical violence to be a rather immature and arrogant solution to conflict anyways," he began. Logan huffed, "Though you tend to he rather immature and arrogant at times so I suppose your disappointment makes sense," he admitted, gently moving his hand up to card through his hair.
"My point is, you didn't have to do that for me, and even though I know why you did, I'm not remotely upset you lost the fight," he assures the other. "I'm just upset that you got in a fight in the first place." Logan watched as Roman shifted uncomfortably.
"Not upset at you," Logan quickly clarified, "upset at the situation," the hand that still had Roman's placed inside it squeezed his hand, while the other was running his fingers through his hair. "I love you."
Roman swallowed, attempting to blink away his tears. "Not as much as I love you, Nerd," he cooes softly. "It's why I did this in the first place," he explained, "I couldn't just sit around and watch him do that to you! Thats like Flynn Ryder just watching mother gothel hurt Rapunzel!"
Logan snorted, shaking his head, "I am nothing like Rapunzel, Roman," he corrects, rolling his eyes.
Roman groaned, rubbing his temples, "Oh MY GOD Logan, you're gonna hurt my head more than Adam did," he exclaimed in disbelief, paired with a dramatic sigh. "You're so literal. It was a metphor, Einstein." Roman felt a smile tug on his lips, watching as Logan pursed his lips, fighting a soft giggle.
"What'd you even say to Adam anyway?" Roman asked after their laughter calmed. "Bruise his masculinity?"
Logan felt his face flush in embarrassment, "Well he was debating with his friend about the morality of gay people, saying it was gross and a sin," he exhaled in exasperation, "Or really just being homophobic in general, so I corrected him because things he was saying was genuinely incorrect and he started getting all defensive and so I told him he was a pathetic piece of shit," he admits, watching Roman's jaw drop.
"He then began to argue with me and I told him he was being a moron since he couldn't grasp basic concepts of sexual and romantic attraction. "
"Oh my stars Specs, that somehow made you even hotter. "
Happy Birthday Patton!
A nice little Moceit one shot I speed wrote for Patton’s birthday! :D
Inspired a little by Law and Order SVU, no warnings just a little hurt/comfort :)
I'm starting from scratch with a writing taglist, if you would like to be added, let me know!
Happy Birthday Patton.
Word count: 1,031
Platonic/Pre-romantic/Romantic Moceit- whatever you would like to see it as :)
Janus sat on the sofa staring at the floor, deep in thought about how much of a rollercoaster life had become recently. He had made himself well and truly known to the others, the drama wasn’t usually his forte, but he wanted to make sure his entrance was spectacular. He had torn everything apart, he had pieced one tiny section back together, it was a tiring existence for him recently. Despite the turmoil he had caused, there was one constant light in his life.
Patton.
As much as it sca- pained him to admit it, Janus and Patton had been growing closer recently, despite Janus’ adamant sarcasm in the latest video calling Patton ‘his bestie’. He actually found himself becoming fond on Patton’s company. He found himself baking cookies with Patton, reading classic novels to him when neither of them could sleep, watching Disney movie after movie with no complaints; just acceptance. Even the quiet moments were acceptable, just sitting in a comfortable silence without the chill in the air coming from the others. Janus noticed that his sarcasm was beginning to rub off on Patton ever so slightly. He smiled fondly as he remembered an exchange from the other day.
“What will you be doing when we’re 85?”
“Squabbling with you.”
“Now wouldn’t that be nice?”
They were both lonely, craving the company of someone who didn’t look at them with indifference or anger, so it was only natural that they would grow closer. That wasn’t such a bad thing after all, at least not in Janus’ mind.
“Hey, you!” Janus jumped when the cheery voice appeared out of nowhere, followed by someone collapsing onto the sofa next to him. It took all of two seconds for him to recognise that cat hoodie he lov- despised so much.
“If you’re trying to give me a heart attack, you’re going the right way about it!” He retorted, his tone dripping with sarcasm as Patton giggled, playfully hitting his shoulder.
“Oh c’mon, you know you love me!” Patton teased making Janus roll his eyes. If only he knew…
The comfortable silence filled the space until Janus glanced over and noticed Patton looking at him with nothing but worry in his eyes. Could he really make the choice to step back? Step back from Patton?
“Hey. What’s going on in that mind of yours?” He heard Patton try to mask the concern in his voice as he felt as hand rest on his arm. Janus sighed and rested his gloved hand on top of Patton’s.
“Oh you know, just thinking about how I could ruin the next thing we have to face.” Janus bitterly answered, the realisation hit Patton like a freight train and he forced Janus’ chin up to look him in the eyes.
“Talk to me. Please?” Patton pleaded quietly, the tone of voice that Janus just couldn’t say no to. He sighed and began to open up to the one person he knew wouldn’t judge him… because they needed each other.
How could he broach this in a way that wouldn’t hurt Patton? He had already done that before, and it was something he swore he would never do again. The one time he caused Patton to spiral was the worst experience of his life, and one he was still regretting to this day.
"You know, when we started spending more time together, what five months a-"
"Six, actually." Patton interrupted with a smirk. Janus let out a chuckle as he removed the gloves from his hands. His mask being removed and letting the vulnerability show.
"Always have to have the final say, don’t you?” Patton shrugged and Janus bit the bullet, continuing like he was saying. “Before we met... The world was an old movie, it was all black and white. Then you, you started to meddle your way into my world and the black and white became different shades of grey. Before I knew it... There were blues... and greens and yellows and reds...”
He couldn’t help but smile when he listed the colours, as he watched the concern from Patton’s face melt away into fondness and happiness, especially when blue was mentioned first. Despite his reputation of lying, every word was true. He had been caught in a monochrome world until Patton showed him colours, how the world isn’t set in its ways. He could be happy with Patton, even when the rest of them told him he was just shifty and untrustworthy.
“You... opened my heart, Patton... And I thank you for it..." Janus felt tears sting the corners of his eyes as he saw the concern flood Patton’s face again.
"And?"
"I- I have to step back, before anyone else gets hurt." He heard Patton gasp and turned his face away.
“No. No! Don’t you dare!” Patton’s voice echoed off the walls. Janus raised an eyebrow in confusion, why was it such a big deal?
“You can’t… you can’t step back. I absolutely won’t let you! I need you, Jan. And I have to go LilyPadton mode to make you understand that, then so help me-” Janus smiled fondly at the nickname and gently put a finger in Patton’s lips to stop him from talking, then rubbed his cheek softly with his thumb.
“Alright. I’ll stay, but only for you.”
The comfortable silence fell between them once again and then the clock beeped indicating midnight. Janus suddenly realised what day it was.
“Oh! Before anything else…” He quickly got off the sofa and ran to his room, grabbing a small blue bag with a gold bow around it. Janus came back to see Patton looking confused, so he handed over the bag.
“Wow, you’re early! Thank you, Jan!” Patton gasped excitedly as he took the gift and peeked inside. Janus chuckled as he loaded up ‘Tangled’ on the DVD player, he knew that neither of them would getting sleep anytime soon. He sat down next to Patton again and let him cuddle up while the opening credits rolled.
“I just wanted to be first… Happy Birthday Patton.”
One hand tucked into his waistcoat, Patton shouldered a heavy oak wardrobe and slid it across the room, blocking the attic door. Then he peered through a gap in the dusty curtains and out the tiny window. His parents’ carriage was little more than a tiny dancing light through the mist, the horse’s trot taking them further and further away.
He was alone.
Smiling, he sank down on a musty pile of old fabrics and retrieved the treasure from his inner pocket.
A letter from J.
Thick woven paper pressed to his mouth, he inhaled deeply and pushed aside the memory of the slimy messenger who’d demanded twice his usual price for delivery. It would be alright. Soon they would no longer need to rely on mercenary travelers to send clandestine letters. Soo they would have their freedom.
Imagining a bit of spice from J’s cologne had mixed with the scent of ink and cotton, Patton’s smile grew. Soon they would be together.
The seal opened with a crack and Patton began to read.
My dearest Angel…
Patton mouthed the words as he read, relishing the feel of them over his tongue and teeth, and let them wrap around his heart. He read slowly, savoring the swirls of J’s quill, brushing his fingers over a tiny splatter of ink in one margin. Frowning at what looked like a tear smeared section near the end. He hugged the precious letter to his heart, then continued.
My parents grow impatient. They met with a new matchmaker yesterday. I was not permitted to attend. ‘This matchmaker has already seen my face,’ they said. ‘I didn’t need to be there.’
My heart grows impatient, too. I long to hold you in my arms, to whisper in your ear, to feel the weight and heat of you close.
Say the word, my love, and I will run to you, wherever you may go.
Yours,
~
“Patton?” His father’s voice rang out from the hallway and echoed against the fireplace. He must’ve missed the front door opening over the crackling wood. Patton dropped the letter into the fire and watched the flames lick the paper. There was nothing left of J’s soft words but ash by the time his parents entered the Great Room.
“I thought a fire might be nice after a chilly ride home,” he said, turning and giving them his best smile. His cheeks hurt and the fake, sugary tone twisted his stomach, but his cheer earned him a peck at the air near his cheek from his mother and a grunt from his father.
The elder Hart settled into his chair and didn’t look at his son as he spoke. “The trip wouldn’t’ve been necessary if you hadn’t turned down your last match.”
“I didn’t—”
His father’s boot thudded to the floor, tiny splatters of mud spread around the point of impact like flower petals. “You didn’t love her,” he snapped, tearing his eyes from his now packed pipe to glare at his son. “Yes, so you’ve said. You will not turn down your next match.”
Patton held his father’s gaze for as long as he dare. “But what if I—”
“Patton, dear…” His mother’s voice was quieter but no less sharp. “You will grow to love her.”
It wasn’t her hope. It was her command.
~
Janus tucked shaking hands into his pockets and paced. A heavy thud from the pub upstairs was soon followed by riotous laughter, no doubt some villager who’d over indulged mocked by his equally inebriated compatriots. Janus shivered under his cloak and pulled it a little tighter over his chest. No-one had seen him enter. He would be safe here for a while.
It had been nearly three weeks since his last letter, twice as long as a reply usually took. But there’d been no mistaking the tiny blue swallow’s feather on his window sill that morning. Peter had a letter for him.
Though Janus had peered through the pub’s windows for close to an hour before slipping inside and downstairs, he hadn’t seen the wiry little trader.  For five years now, Peter had exchanged—for a hefty sum, if Angel’s soft reassurances that he’d handled it meant what Janus suspected—their increasingly secret communications.
What had begun as innocent letters with the bubbly youngest son of a visiting noble had grown. Roots curled around his heart, delicate tendrils reaching toward the first man who’d ever seen him, really and truly seen him.
The muffled crack of a broken tankard startled Janus from his reverie and he clutched at his cloak. Heavy footsteps—far heavier than he’d learned to expect from Peter—approached, growing louder as they neared the sadly unlocked cellar door. Torchlight flickered through the gaps in the worn wood and Janus retreated to the shadows.
The handle slammed open, crashing into the inner wall. His father loomed, filling the doorway and crowding out the much smaller trader one step behind him. Their shadows flickered across the stone floor, reaching for him in his incomplete hiding place.
“————!” His father shouted, Janus’ given name like a brand across his skin. “What the hell do you think you’re doing here? You’re meant to be home, not lurking in a pub like some whore!”
“I assure you, Father, this isn’t—“
His hand swung and landed before Janus could suck. The slap echoed, roaring through Janus’ ears as he watched his father turn and pass a bulging purse of coins to Peter.
The trader shrugged as he pocketed his bribe. “No offense, m’lady,” he sneered, knowing full well how much offense he gave. “Your little beau got outbid.”
“He’s nothing!” Janus’ father snapped, one finger up in warning. “This did not happen and you were never here. Understood?” His father drew himself up to his full height, easily a foot taller than Peter, and for the tiniest of moments, Janus almost pitied the trader.
Almost.
“And you—“ He snapped at Janus and yanked back the hood which hid his braided and pinned up locks. His father would sooner cut his throat than allow him to cut his hair.
And his mother would hold him down while he did it.
“Now, dear, take care of those tresses,” she would murmur, counting as he brushed the hated veil of hair. “Some men will see past those birthmarks and find your beauty there.”
Tonight, though, his father found a handhold.
Hissing, Janus scrabbled at his thick wrists in an instinctive attempt to lessen the pressure as he pushed him to his knees. “Explain yourself!” his father shouted, brandishing something blurry white in his face. A dozen yellow sunflower petals skittered across the floor.
When Janus remained silent, shameful tears leaking out and down to his collar. They’d been so careful, every letter burned, every scrap of evidence destroyed. The petals sparkled through the tears in Janus’ eyes before his father crushed them beneath a muddy boot.
“‘My dearest J,’” his father read aloud, voice cracking in rage. “‘Your letter left my heart aching for you.”
“Harlot! How long have you been letting him fuck you?” his father shouting, yanking him up by the hair to meet his eyes.
“No, sir, we’ve never—“
“Liar!” his father snarled and continued to read. “The only cure is to see you and hold you close. Our time is now, my sweet love. Write to me before you leave and I will meet you halfway to the valley. Yours—” He sputtered, the precious pages crumpling in his hand.
Shaking his head, Janus’ father threw the letter to the floor. Angel’s bouncing cursive called to him from the floor, soft words of solace just out of reach.
“The only place you’re going,” his father said, dragging Janus to his feet, “Is to meet the only suitor dumb enough to marry you before he sees your filthy lying face.”
~
It had been over a month since Patton’s last letter to J. Over a month since he’d called to him. In that time, parental machinations had moved quickly. This time Patton was not even granted the appearance of a choice and was intended to meet his bride to be at the betrothal ceremony. Wedding planning moved even faster and the date was frighteningly near.
Had he somehow missed J’s response? Was J waiting for him on the road to Stonewall, wondering when he would arrive, when he would make good on his promises?
Or was this J’s response? A wordless rejection, his ‘No,’ loud enough to shatter glass.
Scrubbing away his tears, Patton shook his head. No, he refused to believe J had been leading him on. He refused to believe in anything but the sincerity of his love’s words. No, if J wasn’t responding, it was because he couldn’t.
So Patton had better get out there and find him.
He’d gotten as far as the stables when the steward—his parents’ steward—called out behind him.
“I’ve found him, My Lord,” he snitched, weasely words cutting through the quiet nickering of Patton’s favorite horse. “I told you he’d been seen packing.”
“Patton! Where are you running off to?” He turned and faced his parents. His mother had managed to sound hurt. To sound hurt, at least. Her smile was honed to a dangerous edge and she nodded to their personal guards.
Moving quickly, they locked the stable gates on the far wall before bracketing the only other escape. The steward reached for his travel satchel.
Patton’s fingers tightened on the strap as the guards’ hands tightened on their swords.
“Now, Patton, dear,” his mother said, voice washing over him like the lake in winter. “Let’s not make a scene. You want to look your best for your wedding next week, don’t you?”
~
Patton stood stiffly next to the veiled bride at his side. Head tilted down, she gazed at the flowers in her hands more than him or even her own parents. From time to time, she would direct her gaze at the entrance, furtive glances at the quiet paths outside.
He didn’t need to see her expression to read the longing in her body language.
It seemed she was just as pleased at this match as he was, and Patton vaguely wondered if the guards at the door were more for his benefit or for hers.
At the priest’s instruction, they knelt, the bride moving awkwardly in the heavy skirts of her dress. Patton offered his hand, and she hesitated, only taking it when she stumbled. Despite their strength, her fingers trembled in his grip. They were cold, the chilly in Patton’s hand even through the smooth silk gloves.
“Thank you,” she whispered from behind her veil, voice thick with tears. Once settled, she tugged her hand away and Patton nodded.
“My pleasure,” he whispered back after releasing her hand. “I don’t know what you’ve heard, but you have nothing to fear from me,” he added. “I promise.”
She merely shook her head. “Nor you I,” she answered, voice strengthening. It was almost enough to make him laugh. “Though to be honest, I’ve jeard nothing of you. I don’t even know your—“
“Hush, Patton!” his mother hissed from the front row and the bride’s head jerked up, candlelight glinting off her golden hair.
“Patton,” she whispered, fingering the sunflower in her bouquet. Her eyes were just barely visible through her veil, sharp and piercing and boring right into his. “Angel?”
Could it be? Wild hope pounded against Patton’s ribs and he plucked a sunflower petal from his bouquet and tried again to peer through his veil. “J?”
~
The priest began the benediction, but the droning words faded away as Janus nodded, fresh, happy tears streaming down his face beneath his veil. At the priest’s prompt, Angel reached for his hand and drew close to whisper his secret vows. His hands shook and Janus tightened his grip.
“J, is that really you?”
“It’s me, Angel.“ A laugh threatened to push past his lips as his Angel’s soft exhale warmed his cheek. Surely this was too good to be true. “Are you really—“
“Really yours, J.” Pulling back, Angel smiled and nodded, tears welling in his eyes as he lifted Janus’ hand to his lips for the ceremonial kiss. “Really yours.”
My Name Is Logan Sanders-Miller
AO3 link
Summary: Pictures and the occasional story from his mother. That's all Logan had ever had of his father. Just one little photo album, and painful memories confessed to him in the dark, it wasn't much, but it meant everything to him.
His father hadn't wanted Logan. His mother had said that he took one look at Logan and left. Had there really been something so off putting about him that one glance was all it took to drive his father away?
Logan hadn't even done anything. All it took to make his father leave was just him existing apparently.
So, why the hell was he standing outside Sanders' house? Was he seriously going to ask his father why he didn't want Logan? Was he trying to prove himself to Patton, that he really was good enough and that Patton had missed out? Or maybe prove to himself that his father was shitty and that's why he didn't want Logan…
In any matter, Logan wasn't going to turn back now. This was it.
Logan knew he didn't want him, he'd known since he was a little child when he'd asked his mother why he didn't have a father like most of the other children. Logan had been devastated to find out that his father hadn't wanted him, but the question of why… that had haunted him.
Why didn't he want Logan? His mother had said that he took one look at Logan and left. Had there really been something so off putting about him that one glance was all it took to drive his father away?
Had it been Logan's blue eyes? Doubtful since he'd gotten those from his father. Was it his dark hair? It's true that neither of his parents had hair as dark as his, instead, he got his dark locks from his maternal grandmother, but surely it couldn't have been because of such a superficial reason as that.
Logan hadn't even done anything. All it took to make his father leave was just him existing, apparently.
But why? What were his exact thoughts when he left?
There was only one way Logan would be able to know, and that was to ask his father himself.
Logan sighed, mentally shaking himself as he looked up to the house he was now standing in front of.
It was a rather nice house, Logan couldn't help but think, with its blue panel siding and white trim. It was on the large side, had two stories, and yellow shutters. The multicoloured flowers were well tended to and the spacious yard was surrounded by a white picket fence. It looked like the perfect family home.
Logan took a deep breath and opened the wide gate. Closing it behind himself, he walked up the path to the white door.
He clutched the small photo album closer to his chest with his left hand and, curling his right, he raised his fist to knock. It just floated above the wood. He took another deep breath but still hesitated.
Was this it?
Logan quickly knocked twice before he could figuratively get cold feet.
Was he actually about to meet his—
The door swung open before Logan could finish the thought. A man dressed in mostly black, and a bit overdressed for a gentle spring day such as this one with his bowler hat, yellow gloves, and caplet, answered the door.
"Yes?"
Logan opened his mouth to answer but shut it again when no sound came out.
The tall man stared at Logan expectedly, dark brown and light brown —almost yellow— eyes seeming to look into Logan's very core. Which was ridiculous, that wasn't even scientifically possible.
The man looked at Logan for another moment before raising an eyebrow.
"Well? You've been staring at my house for a few minutes now. Can I help you with something, child?"
Logan blinked a few times before his brain finally caught up. "Ah, yes, actually, I believe you can." He pushed his glasses farther up his nose. "I'm looking for… Patton Sanders?"
The man's eyebrow only raised farther at that. "And may I ask why you are looking for him?"
Logan was now hugging the album with both arms. "Ah, so you do know him, which means I have the correct address. Excellent. And yes, you may ask that."
The man continued to stare at Logan —was this going to be a recurring thing?— before sighing softly. "Why are you looking for Patton?"
"Well… I have some… information I would like to—"
Another man, whose face Logan had all but memorized from the album, appeared behind the first man's shoulder.
"Who's at the door, honey?" Patton asked the first man.
"I don't know, the kid's looking for you though."
Patton turned to Logan. "Oh, hello! Can I help you with something, kiddo?"
"Um…" Logan cleared his throat. "I hope so. I have some informa—"
"Papa!" A boy about seven ran up to Patton before announcing, "Remus bit me!"
The first man sighed. "I'll take care of it," He said to Patton before calling into the house, "Remus? Why'd you bite your brother?" He led the boy back into the house where Logan could hear Remus arguing farther into the house.
"Sorry about that. Now, what were you saying, kiddo?"
"Well, my mother is Cindy M—"
A teenager came up behind Patton, his purple hair almost completely covering his eyes. "Yo, Pat, why's the Wi-fi not working?" He tapped something on his phone and frowned.
Patton sent an apologetic look to Logan as he told the teen, "I don't know. Ask your dad, sweetie."
"Okay." He looked up from his phone. "Oh, shit, did I interrupt? Sorry."
"Virgil, lang—"
The teen, Virgil, raised an eyebrow and Logan could really see the resemblance between him and the first man who'd answered the door.
Patton sighed. "I know, I know. I— you're alright, maybe see if your dad needs help with the twins though?"
Virgil glanced at Logan again before nodding. "Yeah, alright. I can ask him about the Wi-fi after we get the twins to stop fighting then." He gave a two-fingered salute before disappearing back into the house.
"I'm so sorry about that, but that's everyone so hopefully we won't get interrupted again. What was that about your mom?"
He didn't belong here. There was no way Logan belonged here with this warm, emotional family. They were obviously tight-knit and it's not like Logan was particularly special or useful. And what did he even expect to find? For this man, his… his… for Patton to welcome Logan with open arms?
If he didn't want Logan as a baby, then why would he ever want him now? Especially after seeing how boring, awkward, and socially inept he was.
What a fool Logan had been.
"Uh… kiddo? Are you selling something? ...You don't have to be nervous. Just tell me your spiel… Do kids these days even know what a spiel is?"
Logan went to take a breath but realised he couldn't, which only made it harder to breathe as he panicked.
"Woah, it's alright! Just take a deep breath. You're okay, just take your time."
Logan did his best to do what Patton instructed, even if only to not waste any more of his time.
"Apologies for the inconvenience, I shall be on my— um, my way now."
"You don't have to leave! You haven't even told me your name or why you were looking for me."
"Er, well… my name is Logan."
"Aww, Logan, what a nice name. That's what I would've named a kid if I'd have gotten to name one."
"I— wait, really?"
"Yes, really!" Patton smiled softly. "So, what was that about your mom… I think you said her name was Cin…dy. Um, s— Cindy who?"
"Cindy Ann Miller."
"Oh… and your name is…"
"Logan Sanders-Miller."
"Oh. Oh, geez."
Logan took a few steps back as Patton stepped out onto the porch. Patton shut the door behind himself and sat down on a white bench.
"So you're… Cindy's your mom?"
"She is my biological mother, yes."
"Wow, I— I almost can't believe she even remembered what my favourite baby name was. It's been… wait, how old are you?"
"Twelve, sir."
"You don't need to call me sir. I mean, you're my… my…” He paused. "Why now though? Why didn't she just— why now?"
Logan blinked in surprise. "Did she not tell you of my existence?"
"No, she didn't. I— I would've been in your life if she had. I promise, Logan."
"Oh, I didn't know that she never… she'd said that you… that you didn't want me."
Tears welled up in Patton's eyes, making guilt stab at Logan's chest.
"That couldn't be further from the truth, Logan. It's true that I most likely wasn't ready for parenthood at that time, but I would've learned. I would've learned from, but also for you. I would've been there for you."
"I… I see. That's…"
Patton wiped his eyes and Logan was once again reminded of how out-of-place he was.
"Should I go?"
Patton looked up in surprise. "What? I— no! I mean, if you have anywhere you need to be, then of course. But…" Patton let out a weird laugh. "Sorry, I'm sure I look a mess right now. It's just… a lot to process. Um… oh, does Cindy know you're here?"
"Yes, she found and gave me your address."
"Okay… yeah, okay. That's good." Patton wiped away the last few tears. "Well, that wasn't a very polite welcome on my part!" Patton attempted to joke. He didn't succeed.
"It was adequate in my opinion. You have been far kinder than necessary and asked why I —seemingly randomly— showed up on your doorstep. You could have told me to leave at any point but you didn't, instead, you listened to everything I had to say."
"Aw, thanks, Logan, but that's really the least I could do. I've… geez, I've missed so much. I really do want to be there for you though, I want to get to know you. As long as that's alright with you and your mom of course."
"I… I believe so. She did give me your address and said I could visit if I wanted to."
"I'm not really sure how to put this, but… do you still want to?" Patton looked at Logan with hesitation and… hope?
"Yes, I still want to."
The reaction was immediate, Patton's face figuratively lighting up. "That's great. I… I really am gonna try, Logan. I promise."
"...You want to try?"
"Yes, I do."
"Oh… well… then I shall try as well."
Patton smiled gently at Logan. "Alright. Sounds good— better than good, in fact!"
"Better than good," Logan echoed.
"Hey, it's a Saturday so I know you won't have school, would you like to come inside and meet everyone?"
"Oh…"
"You don't have to, of course! I don't wanna overwhelm you after all. Just giving you the option."
"Ah, well, if it's alright, perhaps some other time? …If there is another time."
"That's just fine! And of course there'll be another ti— I mean, if you want there to be another time. Sorry, I guess I didn't even consider that you might not… I mean, I completely understand if you resent me and decide at any point that you'd rather not see me anymore."
"Oh, that's… when I said 'if there is another time', I meant if you still wanted to meet again after today."
"Oh, I do as long as you do! Why wouldn't I?"
"Well, technically I can think of a few reasons, but mostly I just didn't want to assume. Not everyone wants a random child in their life."
"Yeah, I suppose, but that's not me." Patton huffed lightly. "If anything I love random children in my life, you're the fourth one so far! My husband, Janus, had a son long before we met, and we both adopted the twins a few years ago."
"Ah, I see. What's one more, then?"
"Exactly! …That didn't quite sound right. I'd still want you in my life even if I didn't have Virgil and my sons. I was just trying to say that I'm not new to children rather suddenly appearing."
"Oh…" Logan's chest twisted with some emotion that he couldn't quite place.
"And besides," Patton continued, "You're not just a random child, you're my random child!"
"But that doesn't— wait, was that a Kung Fu Panda reference?"
Logan couldn't help but feel amazed at how quickly Patton had accepted him. Sure, it might not last long if Logan messed it up —as he did with most things—, but still, Patton hadn't even known Logan for thirty minutes, and was already calling Logan his child.
"Sure was! The twins really like that movie so I know quite a lot of the dialogue."
"Ah, I see."
There was a small lull in the conversation before Patton changed the subject with, "So… would you want to go to the park?"
"...I'm twelve."
"Uh, okay… I don't see what— Oh, I didn't mean on the playground necessarily! There's a nice walking trail, plenty of benches, and even an ice cream stand."
"Mm, that sounds pleasant… I'm allergic to dairy though."
"Oh, sorry, kiddo. 'Fraid you get that from me."
Logan stared at Patton incredulously. "You were going to take me to an ice cream stand, despite being allergic to dairy yourself?"
"...Yes. I— I don't always make the best decisions when it comes to dairy, okay? I mean, my favourite food is mac 'n' cheese."
"You… that's unfortunate."
"Oh, definitely. I don't let it stop me though."
"I have only heard legends of people who eat the food they're allergic to."
"Legends?"
"I… thought it sounded cool. Apologies, I shall refrain from—"
"No, you're fine, Logan! I was just wondering what legends had people eating their allergy in it, that's all."
"Ah, none to my knowledge. The closest I can think of would be the Norse myth in which Balder had a dream that he was going to die, so his mother Frigg made all the plants, trees, and animals promise to never hurt Balder, but she forgot to ask mistletoe. The gods assumed that Balder was invincible and often used him as a target for knife-throwing and archery. One day they were all playing darts, and Loki, having learned from Frigg that Balder wasn't immune to mistletoe, made a dart from the plant and pretended to help guide the blind god Höd's hand. But under Loki's supposed assistance, Höd struck his brother, Balder, piercing his heart and killing him.
"Although Balder wasn't allergic to mistletoe in that case, it was just the only plant that could hurt him, and then Loki was being mischievous, which makes sense as he's the god of mischief." Logan paused, realising that he'd rambled on for longer than he'd intended. "Ah, apologies, that was a rather long story with very little relevance."
"You're fine! I enjoyed listening! It's been quite a while since I heard that story anyway, and I can see how your mind made the connection."
"Oh, okay… well, thank you for listening."
"Of course, Logan. Anytime."
Logan frowned a bit. "We got quite off topic."
Patton laughed. "So we did. But we can continue to get off topic together as we walk the park's walking trail if you want. The trail start is only a few blocks away."
"Alright… have you ever heard about the story where Thor dressed as Freyja to get Mjölnir back?"
"Ooh, that sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't remember most of it. Wanna tell it to me?"
Logan felt himself get even more excited. "Yes, I'd like that."
-
The day had gone so much better than Logan had expected, more than he'd ever dared to hope. Not only did Patton not hate him, but they'd spent most of the afternoon talking. Their conversation had been a bit awkward at times —as Logan's conversations with people other than his mother often were, albeit usually more awkward than it had been with Patton; at least Patton and Logan had some things in common—, but Logan was quite pleased with how the day had gone.
Logan had rather expected to be going home in tears, rather than a small smile he'd found on his face.
After he got home, Logan heated some leftovers for supper and finished the last of his math homework, quite glad that there weren't any bottles from the prior night to clean up —just a beer can that was already in the recycling—, and that his mother hadn't been too hungover to go and work.
Feeling a bit unsure what to do until his mother got home from her evening job, he watched some TV, his conversations with Patton still in the back of his mind.
He especially couldn't stop thinking about when Patton had said that he hadn't known that Logan existed, how his mother had said, on multiple occasions, that his father had taken one look at Logan and left, that he didn't want him.
But Patton did want Logan —or at least thought he did at the moment, he easily might not after getting to know Logan and seeing how worthless he was— and he hadn't known of Logan's existence… and since Logan was quite certain that Patton was telling the truth, that could only mean one thing: his mother had lied.
It meant that his mother had been lying to him for a frighteningly long amount of time.
What felt like both too soon and not soon enough, Logan's mother came home, looking tired as always.
After she grabbed something small to eat, she laid down on the couch, Logan hovering near one of the couch's arms.
"...I saw him today," Logan finally said.
His mother looked up at him. "Saw who? …Your father?"
"Yes, I met him, his husband, Janus, and briefly two out of three of their children. Although the eldest, Virgil, was Janus' son, I assume from a previous relationship, who didn't seem to consider Patton his father."
"Huh, I see. Did it go well?"
"It went… a lot better than expected." Logan felt himself begin to get a little mad. "Especially considering the fact that Patton didn't know of my existence and was actually really nice."
His mother winced. "Oh."
More anger rose in Logan. "Yes. 'Oh'. I— Why didn't you tell Patton that I existed? And why did you tell me that he knew and just didn't want me!?"
"I… don't know."
"Why didn't you just tell me?" Logan was aware that tears were streaming down his cheeks but he couldn't find it in him to wipe them away.
"Logan, sometimes people just… make mistakes. And sometimes they don't realise until it's too late to fix them, at least directly, so they just leave the mistake to fester and it just gets worse over time but they certainly don't want to deal with it now." She dropped her voice to a whisper. "It just got worse, and the longer I waited, the worse I knew it would make everyone feel. So, I just never said anything… not till I finally, finally just bit the bullet and found his address."
She finally stopped staring at the ceiling and looked over at Logan. "I fucked up. I know I did, and I know I should've done it a long time ago, but at least you have your dad now. I know it's my fault that you didn't for so, so long, but you do now. I'm… Logan, I'm really sick, and it took… it took almost dying to realise that I was just trying to keep you to myself, and that's really not fair to you. I'm… I'm so sorry I didn't let you two meet sooner, and it's okay if you don't forgive me for a while, or ever, but I'm trying to fix it now. I'm trying, Logan."
"I—" Logan scrubbed underneath his eyes. "I know, Mom. I know you're trying. It— it really hurt, it hurt not to have him, but you… you did the right thing, and now I do have him. Him and you. That's all I ever wanted…” He paused. "I don't think I can forgive you today… but soon. I just need some time."
Logan's mother smiled softly. "I know, and I understand."
"I'm… I'm glad to have you back, Mom. Yo— you weren't really there for quite a while."
"Yeah, I know, and I am so, so sorry. But I promise that I'm not going to drink again. Your… your dad found me on Facebook earlier while I was at work and we messaged each other, and God bless him, he's actually paying for me to go to therapy with his cousin, Dr. Picani. I'm…" She paused to dab at her eyes with her handkerchief. "I'm gonna get better. I'm gonna get out of this depressive funk and I'm going to fucking stop this stupid alcoholism.
"It's not going to be easy, or linear, but I'm going to do it. I will."
"I know you will. If anyone could do it, it'd be you."
"Thank you for always having my back, little Lo. I don't know what I'd do without you. I— come here, baby." She raised her frail arms up and Logan quickly ducked between them, the both of them wrapping their arms around the other.
After a few moments they pulled away, Logan still kneeling beside his mother. "I… he invited me to come back soon."
"I know."
"I… I want to see him again. I'd like to get to know Patton and his family more."
"Okay, you know I support you either way, baby, so if you want to see him— all of them, then you should spend more time with them."
Logan wasn't sure what to say, so he just asked, "Do you want to watch a movie?"
His mother smiled. "Only if we pop some popcorn."
-
Logan sighed as he looked at Patton and Janus' white door. The parallel between now and the first time that he'd met Patton was making him hesitate, which was only making the moment feel even more familiar.
Logan startled slightly as Janus opened the door.
Janus raised an eyebrow. "Well, now isn't this déjà vu?" He rhetorically asked, the sarcastic tone that his voice usually took ever-present, despite the statement itself holding no actual sarcasm.
"Ah, apologies, I was just…"
"Gathering yourself for a moment?"
"Yes."
"Hmm… well, come in."
"Thank you." Logan went inside and Janus shut the door behind them.
"Logan's here, love," Janus called across the living room and Patton looked up from what he was fixing in the kitchen to across the kitchen bar.
"Hi! You made it!" Patton waved.
A golden retriever mutt came up to Logan, sniffed his pant leg, and began wagging their tail at him, so he patted the dog on the head a few times.
"I did." Logan remembered what his mother had said years ago about how people liked to have their house complimented. "Um, I like how your house's common area is an open plan. It's very… spacious."
"Aww, thanks, Logan. I really like that about our house too." His eyebrows furrowed a bit. "Where's your mom?"
"Ah, yes, she sends her regards and apologies for being absent, but she had to cover for a co-worker at work. It was rather sudden so we didn't have proper time to forewarn you."
"Oh, okay. Well, that's fine! That's too bad that she couldn't come, but I'm glad you're here anyway."
Patton was very generous with his compliments, Logan noted, a bit unsure as to why Patton's praise made him feel so happy. Well, Logan had been idolizing him since he was young, so perhaps it was a bit more obvious than he'd originally thought. He'd been wishing for a father figure since he was little after all.
"And I am glad to be here."
"If you'll excuse me for a moment," Janus said, "I'll go let everyone know you're here."
Janus went upstairs and since Logan wasn't sure what to do, he petted the dog some more.
"Oh! That's Biscuit, by the way!"
"Ah, they're a very good dog."
"Isn't she!"
Janus came down the stairs only a minute later, the twins in tow.
"Oh! It's the Boy Scout!" The twin dressed in a prince costume exclaimed.
"No! He's a zombie," The other twin —his name was Remus, if Logan recalled correctly— tried to correct, pointing his finger at Logan, the black and green sparkly cuff bouncing as he did so.
Janus clicked his tongue. "Remus, what did I tell you about pointing at people?"
Remus sighed deeply. "Not to because it's rude."
"And what do you say, dear?"
"Sorry, Logan."
"It's alright."
"Oh, also maybe don't call people zombies," Janus added.
Logan couldn't help but think what an odd family they were.
"...Are you a zombie?" Remus asked.
"No, I'm not a zombie, or a Boy Scout for that matter."
"Aww," The little prince whined. "Then who are you?"
"Logan."
He snorted. "Okay, smart—"
"Ass!" Remus finished.
"Boys," Patton scolded. "Roman, don't let Remus take the fall for your curse word, and Remus, we don't curse in this house!"
"You said 'fuck' just yesterday, Papa. You know, when you accidentally spilled milk everywhere?"
Patton sighed. "Okay yes, I did. But I shouldn't've said that."
"Also you're an adult, which means that if you wanted to curse, you could," Janus added.
"Yeah," Remus agreed. "Like Virgil, although he's not an adult… wait, why is Virgil allowed to cuss and we're not? We're only like… nine years younger."
"Well, my age minimum for children cursing is lower than your Papa's, so we compromised, and if you don't swear loudly in public, you can curse when you turn fifteen."
"Aww, but that's so far away!"
"Yes, it is."
"Oh, speaking of Virgil, where is he?" Patton asked.
"Still upstairs. He said that he'd be down in a minute."
"Oh, okay!"
"...So who are you really?" Roman asked.
"And don't say 'Logan' again!" Remus added.
"...Logan Sanders-Miller."
"Aww. You did it again."
Janus sighed. "Don't you remember when I told you last night that Patton had a son who was coming over for dinner today?"
The twins shook their heads.
"Did you tell them while they were watching TV?" Patton asked.
"Yes— oh, I see what happened. I always forget that they won't hear me if the TV's on."
"Are you really Papa's son?" Remus asked Logan.
"Um, yes, I am his biological son."
Roman ran into the kitchen where Patton was still cooking. "Papa?"
"Yeah, Ro?"
"Why'd you hide Logan from us?"
"Oh, sweetie, I didn't hide Logan from y'all! His mother had never told me that he'd been born so I had no idea he existed."
"Oh, that's sad… so kinda like how you and Dad didn't know that me and Remus existed until you found us at the adoption place? Well, except that Logan's your bioluh… biological son and me and Remus aren't."
"Yeah, that's exactly right!"
"Remus and I," Janus corrected. "I am trying to teach our sons some semblance of proper grammar after all."
Supper went fairly well, it was a bit awkward at times and Logan had a strong feeling that Virgil didn't like him, but the twins' lively conversation soon easily broke up any awkwardness.
"I can help clean up," Logan offered after they'd finished eating.
"Aw, that's okay! I've got it. Besides, you're our guest!"
"Oh, alright…"
"Um, but if you want, you could go watch the twins in the living room. They'll probably get out some toys which is fine, just make sure they don't physically hurt each other. Oh, but if that's too much pressure, I can come watch them, I'm just helping Janus clean up right now."
"That's alright, I can watch them." Logan walked deeper into the living room and around the couch, noticing Virgil scowling at him from the dining table as he went.
Seriously, why did Virgil dislike him so much?
"Logan!" Remus exclaimed as he knocked his plastic dinosaur into Roman's.
"Come play with us!" Roman whacked his pteranodon into Remus' triceratops, which fell out of Remus' hand, causing Roman to cheer.
"Aw, man!" Remus pouted. "Now how am I supposed to defeat the dino rebels!"
Logan sat down on the floor next to the twins. "Hmm, perhaps the Ankylosaurus could help?"
"Oh, yeah! But I'm dead, so you'll have to play him, okay?"
"Alright, I can do that."
"Oh no!" Roman cried dramatically. "Another leader of the Dinosaur Imperial Magistrate —DIM for short— has arisen!"
Logan played with the twins, using the plastic dinosaurs to fight for a minute or two when Virgil came into the living room and sat on the couch, gesturing for Logan to come sit next to him.
After Logan excused himself from the battle, Remus and Roman continuing on in his absence, he got up and perched himself on the edge of the couch.
"Yes?"
"You don't have to play with them, you know,"
"Oh, I know, but I actually enjoy playing with people younger than me."
"I just— I can take care of them by myself." Virgil huffed. "I know that Patton doesn't think that, but I can! I can be responsible!"
"Alright. I've never said otherwise—"
"You can't just come in here and suddenly be a part of this family."
"O… kay? I didn't—"
"I don't know what you think you're doing, just waltzing in here like you've always been here but you haven't! You can't just uproot our family because suddenly you want a dad."
"I understand that I haven't always been here but I really am not trying to uproot anything. I'm not trying to tear your family apart, I just want to earn my place in it."
"And what makes you think you will?!" Virgil exclaimed, his voice dangerously low, but still quiet so as not to let the twins playing on the other side of the living room or the adults in the kitchen overhear.
"I… I don't know," Logan admitted. "When I first met Patton, I didn't even originally come to try and join the family he'd built for himself. I just wanted to know why he hadn't wanted me as a baby, only to find out that my mother had lied and he had no idea I existed. I'm only here trying to earn a place in Patton's life because he's invited me into it."
"I—" Virgil's breaths were shorter than they should have been. "W— well stop trying! Who said you deserve to try! You shouldn't expect so much so soon!" Virgil's voice was steadily rising, so much so that the twins looked up from where they were playing.
"Are you okay, Virgie?" Roman asked.
"Yeah, you seem mad," Remus agreed.
"Everything's fine," Virgil gritted out, "I'm just talking to Logan."
"Okay, just remember Papa's saying: 'you say things bad when you're mad' !"
"Whatever, just go play."
The twins both frowned.
"Um, okay," Remus said, worry still evident in his tone. He looked at Virgil for a moment longer before he hesitantly went back to what seemed to be an odd game that involved both chess and checker pieces.
Logan took a deep breath. Virgil's words struck a little too close to home. "I apologize if it seems like I've been trying to barge in where I do not belong, but if I could ju—"
"Just stop it already. I don't wanna talk about this anymore."
"I— alright."
"I just…" Virgil took some more heavy breaths. "I just don't understand how you can come in here and act like you belong and like everyone's totally chill with that! Patton just met you the other day, there's no way that he could like you already! He's just being polite! And you're too naïve to fuckin' see that.
"No one even wants you here!" Virgil stopped, looking quite surprised at his outburst… at least he did until Logan's vision blurred with unshed tears. Logan couldn't see Virgil's face well enough to tell after that.
Logan stood up. "Well then, I apologize for overstaying my welcome. I can see that I'm not wanted so… so I'll be going then. Goodbye."
"Wait, I didn't mean t—"
"Didn't you though?" Logan snapped as he made his way around the couch and to the front door.
Patton came out of the kitchen, Janus right behind him, and asked, "Oh, Logan, are you leaving so soon?"
Logan opened the door.
"Wait, Logan—"
Logan shut the door behind himself with a bit more force than necessary, just able to hear Virgil faintly say, "Shit, I think I made him cry."
Tears streamed down Logan's face the entire walk home.
-
Logan had never been one to outwardly display his emotions, but he also tried not to just push them down. Which was why he'd felt so utterly embarrassed when he couldn't stop crying the day prior.
It was one thing for Logan to cry in the privacy of his own room, and another thing entirely to cry in front of Patton and his family. Sure, someone might've seen him cry as he was walking home, but that was nothing in comparison to how shameful he felt that Patton had to have seen him like that.
So much for trying to prove that he was good enough. He'd certainly messed that up beyond repair as there was no way that Patton would want him now.
Logan sighed, and forcing himself to get out of bed, he walked to the living room.
Logan's mother looked up from the TV and frowned, using the remote to turn it off.
"Hey, baby. What's wrong? Did something happen last night?"
"...I made a complete fool of myself."
She frowned. "Hmm, well come here. Let's talk it out."
Logan sat next to her. "Okay."
"So? What happened?"
"Well, Virgil said that no one wanted me there, among other things, and I kind of panicked, so I left… but everyone saw that I was crying before I could leave. It… Newton, I was so embarrassed. Still am, actually."
"Oh, honey! I'm so sorry."
Logan sniffed. "He was right though. I did kind of just barge in there and act like I was entitled to Patton and his family."
"Really?" His mother asked skeptically. "Because that doesn't sound like you at all."
"I— well… Virgil informed me that Patton didn't actually want me there, that he was just being polite and I was too naïve to see that," Logan spat as tears began to well up in his eyes.
"Hmm, okay. I don't know what Virgil's problem is, but I just really don't think any of that's true. I've been messaging your dad a bit ever since you met him. He seemed nothing but excited that you were in his life… well, and guilty for not being there for you sooner, but I've already told him that it's not his fault. I was the one to keep it from him after all…
"Anyway, point is, your dad absolutely wants you there. I think you'd know if he was just being nice. If there's two things I remember about him from college, it's how kind he was and how his passive aggression was not super veiled. I really do think that he cares about you, and while I don't know why Virgil said all those things, I think you should talk to the both them about it. Maybe it's not as bad as you think."
A few tears rolled down Logan's cheeks. "...Are you sure?"
His mother patted his shoulder. "Quite sure."
"Okay… when do you think I sh—"
There were a few light knocks on the front door, making Logan startle as he quickly tried to wipe away the few fallen tears.
Logan's mother got up and answered the door. "Hello, what can I do for you two?"
Logan couldn't hear what the other people had said, but his mother quickly ushered Patton and Virgil in with a, "Please, come in. I'm sure there's much to talk about."
Logan was just about to stand up and hide in his room when Patton said, "Wait, Logan. This'll only take a minute, but there's something that Virgil wanted to say."
Logan hesitated and almost left anyway, but Virgil seemed so genuinely worried that Logan stayed.
"Alright. Just for a minute."
"Okay…" Virgil nodded, still looking extremely nervous but almost a bit relieved. He stood in front of the couch, still keeping some distance so as to not crowd Logan.
Patton and Logan's mother went into the kitchen, most likely to make some tea, and Patton gave Logan a brief reassuring smile.
"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for snapping at you yesterday," Virgil began. "I didn't mean anything I said, especially that no one wanted you there… you don't have to earn your place in this family by the way. This doesn't make it right, but I was jealous because I thought that Patton liked you more than me. But that's not true, he doesn't play favourites like that."
"...Oh. I see."
"I'm afraid that I was kinda projecting my feelings of inadequacy onto you, like, everything I said to you was what I was feeling towards Pat. Um, but he and I had an entire conversation about it and I'm doing a lot better now, but still, I'm really sorry you had to get caught up in all that shit. In all of my shit."
"I… did not enjoy it, that's for sure, but as long as you learn from your mistake and try your best not to do it again…"
"I promise. From now on if I have a problem with someone, I'll talk to them about it instead of snapping at someone else."
"Good. In that case, I forgive you."
Virgil's shoulders slumped in relief. "Okay, thanks, Logan."
"You're welcome, Virgil. And thank you for apologising."
"No problem, it's the least I could do after I was so mean to you." Virgil shifted on his feet. There was a pause before he asked, "Hey, wanna go see what our parents are talking about in the kitchen?"
"Sure."
Logan's mother laughed at something Patton had said as Logan and Virgil walked into the kitchen.
"Oh, hey, kids. You get everything sorted out?" Patton asked, a bit pointedly at Virgil.
"Yeah, I apologized and he forgave me."
"Good, I'm glad."
"Um, hey… Pops?" Virgil seemed a bit hesitant with the nickname, and Logan deduced that he must have just started using the fatherly nickname after his emotional conversation with Patton.
Patton seemed to be holding back a beaming smile as he answered, "Yes, Virge?"
"Can we take Logan and his mom out to get burgers for lunch?"
"Oh, that's a great idea! Er, if they're not busy, that is."
Logan's mother hummed. "Well, I don't have work until three, and it's a Saturday, so it's not like Logan has school."
"Great! Do y'all like Sonic?"
Logan felt himself get excited. "Sonic's burgers are superior, especially when you consider the facts that you can get tater tots with it and that they have cherry limeades, as well as root beer. Which are my two favourite drink options."
"You're absolutely right," Virgil agreed. "They really are superior."
"Did you know that the first location opened near Shawnee, Oklahoma and was originally called the Top Hat Drive-In? In 1959 when Troy Smith and his business partner, Charlie Pappe looked into getting it copyrighted, but they discovered that it already was copyrighted. So they named the franchise Sonic, with the slogan 'Service With the Speed of Sound' ."
"Oh, yeah," Virgil agreed. "I think I read an article about that. They named it Sonic because the jets at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma city were breaking the sound barrier, right?"
"Yes, that's correct." Logan couldn't help but give Virgil a small smile, who returned it easily.
Logan had never met someone who liked Sonic anywhere near as much as him, and looked forward to sharing more facts with Virgil.
In the end, Logan had never had so much fun doing something so normal as getting hamburgers. Although he was beginning to suspect that nothing was normal around the Sanders' family… and he was right.
-
Logan loved the science fair, it was one of his favourite things about school, and even if his mother usually had to work a lot, she always made time for Logan's science fair, and this year was no different.
…At least in that aspect, it was no different, it was, however, definitely different in another way, namely, Patton and his whole family came.
Janus and Virgil were each holding the hand of one of the twins who were trying to pull every which way to see everything, bringing up the rear was someone that Logan didn't know, but looked rather like Patton —a brother or cousin, maybe?— in a floral print shirt, and leading the whole procession was Patton, a large tote bag on one shoulder, and a big water bottle in his other hand.
Patton waved, the tote bag almost slipping, but he managed to catch it just in time, laughing at himself a bit. "Hey, Logan! I brought snacks!"
"...To a science fair?"
"Yeah! I thought we might get hungry after."
"Ah, that's true. I hadn't thought of that. Good idea."
"Thank you!" Patton beamed. "Oh! This is my brother, Thomas." Patton gestured with his lips at the person Logan didn't recognize.
"What's up?" Thomas greeted.
"I'm at the science fair."
Thomas snorted. "That's fair."
Logan squinted suspiciously. "Was that a pun?"
"Sure was!"
"...I can certainly see the relation."
Thomas and Patton laughed.
Janus turned to Logan from where he'd been talking to his children. "Ah, before I forget, good luck with your presentation."
"Thank you, Janus."
"You're going to do awesome!" Roman assured.
"Or fall flat on your face," Remus gleefully added.
Logan pursed his lips. "Well, I certainly hope I don't fall on my face."
"Nah," Virgil said. "You won't… probably."
"Confident as ever," Janus teased sarcastically. "Well, we should probably go take our seats, but we wanted to wish you luck first."
"Thank you, I appreciate that."
Janus took the bag and water bottle from Patton.
"It was nice meeting you," Thomas said.
"Nice to meet you as well."
"Break a leg!" Remus said sweetly as they walked towards the seats, and somehow, Logan knew that he only half meant it in the 'perform well' way.
"So, where's your mom?" Patton asked.
"Here! I'm here." Logan's mother smiled nervously as she tried to catch her breath. "Patton, it's, um…"
"Good to see you again, Cindy."
Her shoulders sagged slightly in relief. "Yes. It is."
Patton was about to say something in reply but a woman with a dyed blonde bob haircut walked up to them, an overly fake smile on her face. "Hi! I'm Sheryl."
"Hi, Sheryl, I'm Patton!" Patton shook her hand. "And this is my son, Logan, and his mom, Cindy."
"Aww, don't you two make a cute couple."
Logan sighed a little louder than he meant to.
Patton's smile quickly turned awkward as he explained, "Oh, we're not a couple anymore, but my husband and our other children are here."
"Oh." Sheryl just awkwardly walked off and spotted someone she knew. "Susan! How's the kids?"
Logan mentally groaned. "Apologies. That entire interaction was my fault."
"What?" Patton asked. "Nonsense!"
"You wouldn't even be here if I didn't have a science fair, or had met you… or even existed."
"Oh, hey, no. Logan, that wasn't your fault. And I'm really glad you exist, especially because I got to meet you. She was just being a bit of a jerk—
"Fuckin' asshole," Logan's mother interjected bitterly.
"But it's nothing I couldn't handle, and absolutely not your fault."
"...Okay."
"Okay."
"If she says anything else, let me know." Logan's mother pursed her lips. "I'm on the board, and I can assure you that we don't take too kindly to homophobia. Veiled or not."
"Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll certainly let you know."
Logan's mother checked her watch before she looked between Patton and Logan and nodded to herself. "Well, I'm gonna sit down. It starts in ten minutes but you two should have time."
"Should have time for what?" Patton asked.
"Logan wants to ask you something." She smiled knowingly and walked away.
Logan sighed.
His mother was a bit too perceptive at times.
"What was it you wanted to ask me about?"
"Oh… well, I was just wondering why… why you introduced me as your son. I mean, obviously I'm your biological son but…"
"Oh! I introduced you as my son because you are my son. Ah, but if that makes you uncomforta—"
"No! Er, no. I'm not uncomfortable. I just… am not clear what yo—" Logan cringed at himself. "Nevermind."
"No! Go ahead. What is it?"
"I… I'm not really sure how to explain."
"Oh, hmm, that's tough… maybe I can guess? I kinda think I know where this is going. Oh, but I can totally just give you time if you wanna think it out for yourself."
"No, that's… I'd— I mean, it would probably be easiest if you just said what you thought I'm trying to say."
"Okay. So, what I think you're maybe wondering is what… oh wow, this is hard. Okay, you're my biological son, but you're also just… my son, okay?"
"Oh, I— okay."
"Is that okay?"
"Definitely. I… yes."
"Okay. And um, well, you definitely don't have to… but I'm okay with you know, fatherly nicknames, but again, only if you want! Not trying to rush anything of course, or make you feel like you have to ever even. So… um, so yeah."
Tears began to prick at the corner of Logan's eyes.
He really hadn't expected this to happen when he'd woken up today. He'd of course known that Patton was kind and caring, but to know that he already thought of Logan as his son… that it was okay for Logan to call him father… it was all too much, albeit in a good way.
"Oh! Sorry, I didn't mean to make you cry! You don't have to—"
"No, no. It's alright. These, uh, these are happy tears… Father." Despite Patton having just said it was okay, Logan still warily looked at him to see his reaction.
Patton broke out in a big grin. "Awww! Oh my goodness, abjfshdjsjsjdh!"
"Wh— what?"
"Aah, sorry. I'm just, shvshshsh."
"...Are you having a stroke? The signs are—"
"No, it's okay. I'm not having a stroke. Just so happy I'm at a loss for words!"
"Oh, I see."
"...Can I hug you?"
"Yeah, I'd like that."
Patton wrapped his arms around Logan. "Thank you for being my son."
Logan buried his face into Patton's shoulder before mumbling, "And thank you for being my father."
Logan was almost late for his presentation due to his happy tears, but he found that it was very, very worth it.
-
Logan hadn't quite been sure what to think when Patton invited him to come along with the other Sanders to the beach. For one, he hated swimming, but also, if there was anything Logan hated more than swimming, it was sand. And that was without even mentioning the ride home in wet swim clothes.
So no, Logan wasn't looking forward to going... but Patton had invited him, and he did enjoy the Sanders' company.
When Patton's sky-blue minivan pulled up, Logan got up from the window seat, grabbed his bag, and, after locking the apartment door behind himself, walked down the stairs and to the van.
Patton rolled down the passenger window and leaned around Janus to say, "Hey, Logan! You got everything you need?"
"Yes, I have sunscreen, a pair of clothes, goggles, a towel, and the key to get back into my apartment."
"Great! Hop in!" Patton pressed a button and the side door slid open.
The drive there mostly consisted of the twins asking 'are we there yet' just to annoy everyone; bickering with each other; Virgil, Logan, and Janus trying to stop them from said bickering; and Patton jamming out to oldies as he drove.
Due to the twins' bickering and the fact that Logan had never been out this way to the ocean before, the drive felt longer than it actually was, but soon enough they were all unloading from the van and heading down to the beach.
It was a rather warm June day, and the sun sparkled across the water brightly as it was unhindered by any clouds.
Logan could feel the apprehension building in himself the closer they got to the water, but took a deep breath to try and get it to settle. Patton wanted him to go swimming, so swimming he would go.
After setting up their stuff and putting on sunscreen, they all got in the water. Remus and Roman instantly began racing, Virgil acting as the referee, while Patton and Janus got in the water at a more sedate pace, already wading in up to their knees.
Logan was still standing quite firmly in the sand.
Patton turned around to look at Logan and furrowed his eyebrows. "Logan? What's wrong?"
"I just… am not particularly fond of swimming, that's all." Logan hesitantly walked to where the water lapped at his ankles, feeling a bit silly as Patton was already in to his waist.
"Aww, I'm sorry. We would've picked a different activity if we'd known that."
"No, that's alright. If I really don't want to swim, I can sit in a beach chair."
"Still. We wanna do stuff that you'll like too. How about next time you can pick where we go?"
"Really?"
"Sure! Just name the place and we'll go soon."
"Hm… how about the planetarium?"
"Sounds great!"
Logan nodded and mentally braced himself as he walked farther into the water. It wasn't quite as cold as he'd thought, but was still pleasantly cool in the heat of the day.
Logan paused with a small frown once he'd gotten in past his bellybutton and sniffed the air. Since this was the ocean and not a pool, there was no chlorine to bother Logan. He got in to his shoulders and pushed his feet off the sand, swimming in place to stay afloat, finally level with Patton instead of trailing behind.
"This isn't as bad as I'd thought."
"Awe, I'm glad! I personally love swimming."
"Mm, I'd… well, not forgotten that there wasn't any chlorine, of course, but it's not that bad. And sure, it smells a bit like salt, but considering it's the ocean, that makes sense." The water began to lap at Logan's chin. "I really had expected it to be so much wors—" The water brushed past his lips and he wrinkled his nose as he spat out the few drops of water that'd made it into his mouth. "Eurgh! Why does it taste so salty?!"
Patton laughed gently. "You knew the ocean was salty, Lo!"
"Well, of course I did, Father, but I didn't know it was going to be this salty! Ugh, it's horrendous."
Patton giggled. "Aww, sorry, kiddo."
The saltwater had tasted terrible, but all in all, swimming had gone much better than Logan had expected. The lack of chlorine had really made a big difference.
After they had gotten out of the water for lunch, almost everyone made sand castles while Janus and Logan sat on a blanket under the shade of a big umbrella.
"So, how are you enjoying the family so far?" Janus asked, startling a small laugh out of Logan.
"What?"
"Well, it's been a few months. Surely you have formed some sort of opinion by now."
"Oh, I have. I just wasn't expecting the question." Logan paused for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. "I really like it here… not the beach— well, it is nice here, but what I meant was that I really like being with everyone."
"Good, I'm glad. Everyone likes that you're here too."
"...Everyone?"
Janus smiled like he was in on a joke. Perhaps he was. "Everyone."
"...I'm not intruding?"
"Not at all. I daresay that there would be many protests if you tried to cut us off. Patton is quite the protective papa bear. Actually, if you want to be specific, I believe there'd be five protests. Six if you count your mother."
"Oh… six?"
"Yes, six. Did you really think I'm completely apathetic towards you?"
"Well, I didn't know, and… well, I didn't want to assume."
Janus hummed. "Now you don't have to."
"True." Logan paused, a bit of anxiety building in his gut as he tried to think of how to word what he wanted to say. "Thank you for letting me into your family," Logan rushed out. "You didn't have to do that, but you did anyway, and I— I really appreciate it."
"I'm… not even quite sure what to say to that. I don't feel as though it was letting you as in 'I gave you permission', but more like you just naturally became a part of our family."
Logan hummed. "I see. Well, regardless, I'm still grateful for all of you."
"And us you," Janus said, voice full of sincerity.
They sat there in peaceful silence for several minutes until Patton came up.
"Janus! The kids say it's your turn to play with them."
Janus sighed faux-dramatically. "Well, if they insist…" He got up and went to where the others were throwing sand around.
"Hi!" Patton exclaimed as he sat down next to Logan.
"Hello, Father. How was the sand?"
"Sandy dandy!"
Logan exhaled through his nose, if only to keep himself from laughing. "That's… a very you response."
Patton laughed. "You betcha!" He looked out at the ocean for a few moments before saying, "Hey, Logan?"
"Yes?"
Patton looked back at Logan. "I'm glad you came to find me a few months ago."
"Mm, me too."
"I… I know I said this at your science fair last month, but you're family." Patton laughed a little. "I mean, of course you're family, but I just… I wanted to say it again. And that… that I really care about you, Logan."
"I really care about you too… Papa?" Logan hadn't meant it to sound like a question but he was a little unsure if Patton would think it was okay so it did anyway.
"Awwwww, c'mere!"
Patton scooted closer, Logan copying him, and Patton put an arm around Logan's shoulders, who immediately rested his head on Patton's shoulder.
"Love you… Lo-son."
"...Was that a pun in front of my emotional conversation?"
Patton laughed again, much louder this time. "I can tell you've been hanging out with Virgil a lot."
Logan smiled. "Maybe a bit."
"Hey!" Remus exclaimed from a bit farther down the beach. "Come look at what we made!"
Patton and Logan exchanged glances as Logan sat up properly again before they got up and went to where the twins and Virgil were gathered.
"Where's Jan—" Logan cut himself off with a startled laugh as he could only see Janus' head, his body under the sand which had been shaped to look like a snake.
"See!" Roman beamed. "He's a sea snake."
"You good under there, dear?" Patton asked amusedly, obviously trying not to giggle.
Janus pouted a bit, but still said, "Yes, I'm fine, just covered in sand."
"I like the details in the scales! Very fancy."
"Yeah," Virgil agreed. "Re and Ro did most of them."
Logan tilted his head to the side. "What species were you modeling this after?"
Roman thought about it for a moment. "Uh… sea snake?"
Virgil snorted. "We didn't have one in mind. Just used our imagination."
"Ah, I see."
"Come build sandcastles with us, Logan!" Roman exclaimed more than asked as he smiled up at Logan.
Logan couldn't help but smile back. "Alright. What time period and place were you thinking of?"
"Ooh," Remus cut in, "Which ones have the most gore?"
"Well…"
Everything was so very different from only a few months prior, but it'd only changed for the better.
Logan had always had his mother, but his family grew bigger than he'd ever thought possible.
Home really wasn't about the house, but rather about the people; and between Logan's mother, Patton, Janus, Virgil, Remus, and Roman, Logan had an abundance of home.
And there truly was no place like home.
storm!! trick or treat friend!!
may i humbly request moceit or loceit with drabble prompt “are you a witch?” in the spirit of spooky season? (i found it somewhere lol)
- blue 💙
Thanks for the lovely prompt! It may have taken me until the middle of December to get around to writing this vaguely Halloween-themed fic, but here it is!! I flipped a coin and got tails for this one, so here's some moceit angst :))))
As much as Patton knew that coven meetings were essential, he was secretly glad when this one drew to a close.
He'd already been zoned out for the past fifteen minutes, his gaze fixed on a hanging bundle of herbs just beside the coven leader's head, thinking about his boyfriend waiting for him back home. He wondered if Janus would've started on dinner yet, maybe he'd be cooking that delicious pasta dish Patton loved so much... or maybe he'd simply be sitting by the fire reading a book, snuggled adorably in a jumper far too big for him as he waited for Patton to return.
That thought made the longing in Patton's chest grow stronger, and he hurried to put his quill and notepaper into his satchel.
"Hey, Pat," Virgil stopped him with a hand on his arm.
Patton smiled at his friend. They'd known each other since they were kids, as most witches in the same coven did, and he'd been best friends with Virgil since before they could walk. "What's up, Virge?"
"Will you be able to make it to spell practice with me and Logan on Saturday?" Virgil asked.
Patton sighed. "I don't know... I feel like I haven't been spending much time with Janus recently, I was going to spend Saturday afternoon with him."
Virgil nodded. "He doesn't suspect anything, does he?"
"Not a thing." Patton hesitated. "I feel bad, keeping all this from him. Being a witch is a big part of my life, and I know the situation's complicated, but I do wish I could tell him."
Virgil bit his lip, just barely nibbling at a piece of dry skin there - a force of habit that happened when he was particularly nervous. "It's your choice, but you should do what's safest for you. You know we have to be careful."
Patton nodded ruefully. He knew all too well how much people in general distrusted witches, and though Patton loved Janus, he knew he had to be particularly careful. Because Janus' parents were witch hunters, and though Janus had never seemed to have anything against witches himself, all of Patton's friends had tried to dissuade him from telling his boyfriend about his true nature for his own safety.
"I think... if I'm honest with him about it, he'll be okay with it," Patton said, searching Virgil’s eyes for any kind of assurance. When he found none, he turned away, but Virgil gently held onto his arm.
"I just want to keep you safe, Pat," Virgil said. "But... it's your decision. Please, just think carefully about it."
Patton nodded. "I'll keep myself safe, don't worry."
He patted Virgil’s shoulder before he left.
Patton spent the walk home thinking about his options. He really, truly wanted Janus to know everything about him, and in his heart of hearts he didn’t believe that Janus would turn him away if Patton was completely honest. So, he made a decision. He'd tell Janus, maybe tomorrow over dinner. He'd sit Janus down with his favourite meal, and explain to him all about what being a witch really meant, how different it was from what Janus must've been taught - leaving out any details about his coven, just to be safe.
Yes, he could do this, Patton thought happily as he opened the front door and hung up his coat.
He first made for the kitchen, but it was empty, with no evidence that Janus had started cooking anything. He wasn't in the living room with a book, either, which was a little odd. Perhaps he'd decided to take an afternoon nap, though the hour was creeping towards evening.
With a strange feeling of apprehension, Patton pushed open the bedroom door. But Janus wasn’t having a nap, the bed was empty... with Patton's magic equipment laid out across it.
He always took his wand and fundamental spellbook with him to coven meetings, but his collections of spell components, his spare wand, and his books of more obscure spells had been taken from under the loose floorboard and strewn across the bed.
At the end of the bed, Janus stood, staring at the objects.
"Jan, I can explain-" Patton rushed to his side, but Janus held up a hand, and Patton couldn't bring himself to continue speaking or moving.
"Patton," Janus' voice cracked, and he looked at the floor, clearing his throat. "Patton, tell me honestly... are you a witch?"
His voice was small, as if he dreaded the answer, as if he couldn’t believe this was happening.
Patton swallowed the emotions that were blocking his throat, and nodded. "Yes. I am, but I swear I was going to tell you. If we just sit down and talk about this, I can explain everything."
Janus shook his head. "What is there to talk about? You've been lying to me for months, Patton. You knew my parents were Guardians, and you didn't even tell me that you... that you're..."
Patton almost scoffed at the name - Guardians, that was what the witch hunters called themselves, as if they were protecting the general population by hunting innocent witches and forcing their communities into hiding.
"Get out," Janus said, before Patton could speak again. "You're lucky I don't tell my parents about this."
Patton looked up at him in surprise. "Why won't you?"
Janus didn't look at him, and when he spoke, his voice was choked. "You know why."
And Patton could feel his heart shattering, because he did know why. Janus had never been open about his emotions, but with Patton, he tried. When Janus found it difficult to get the words out, they found ways around it.
"What?" Patton would ask, when he caught Janus gazing at him while they relaxed in the evening, his eyes filled with so much love that it made Patton's chest ache.
"You know what," Janus would smile, pressing his lips to Patton's hand.
"Jan..." Patton said, watching his boyfriend scan the items on the bed, still in slight disbelief.
Janus ignored him, walking past as if Patton was invisible. "I'm giving you half an hour. Get all of that stuff," he gestured to the spellcasting items with disgust, "and all your other things out of my house. And don't even think about coming back."
Reluctantly, Patton moved towards the bed, and began folding his spell components back into the cloths. But when Janus reached the bedroom door, he couldn’t help calling out.
"Wait."
To his surprise, Janus stopped, waiting for Patton to speak.
"I just..." Patton said, looking into Janus' eyes for what might be the last time. "You know."
The room was dark, and Janus was haloed by light from the hallway, but Patton could see his eyes prick with tears. Then, Janus nodded, flashed Patton and achingly sad smile, and walked away.
Pray To Me A Little Longer (pt 2.1/3)
yeah, I'm splitting chapter 2 into two parts, the whole point of posting on tumblr (for me) is to be able to post things before they're ready for AO3, besides, it makes perfect sense as its own chapter
Part 1 • Part 2.2 Part 3 Devotion
Word count: 1788
Rating: Teen
Pairings: Moceit, future qpr Intrulogince (Remus/Logan, Logan/Roman)
Warnings: murder (comical), mythology-esc hijinks, animal death (by other animals, sentient animals? sentient animals killing non-sentient animals for food)
~~~START~~~
Long ago, near the dawn of humanity, Thomas, King of all Gods, had a Son: Patton, Prince of Gods, Flame of the Earth. He grew tall and fair, and when He had grown old enough to come into His own, Thomas had a second Son.
Romulus was a rascal of a God, full of wild energy and teasing jests. Many a God privately expressed Their regret that Thomas had had a second Son, though never would They say a word against Him in the presence of His Father. Still though, Thomas knew His second Son was a handful, and when He had a third, He sent Him to be raised in Logos, where His most trusted priestesses and nymphs would keep Him out of trouble.
One day, Patton came to His Father with a snake draped around His neck. The serpent spoke mostly riddles and lies, but still, the God of Truth professed His love for the creature and begged His Father to grant him the divinity His own Children had been blessed with. Thomas agreed, saying that if the snake would stay with Patton until the solstice in one month’s time, then the two should be wed, and the snake would be blessed to remain at Patton’s side forever more. The serpent happily acquiesced.
The serpent’s loyalty in that month was surely tested as Romulus teased the poor creature cruelly, calling him ugly and attempting to pry scales from his tail. Patton had always tried to show His Brother patience and kindness, but this disrespect of His lover was something He could not stand for. He cursed at His Brother, and bid Him not come to the wedding at all unless it was to beg on His knees for the serpent’s forgiveness. Romulus was not cowed and declared that the snake would just as likely leave His Brother after receiving divinity as not before storming off in a huff.
Thomas made His second Son apologize at the wedding, but nothing could stop the God of Ego from laughing when it was revealed that His Brother’s Husband’s name was Janus.
Janus continued to accept every jab, every aggression, every abuse from Romulus with a sly smile on His face. At every turn He held His Husband back from losing His temper at His Brother. Then, during the Festival of the Eclipse, as the moon passed in front of the sun, plunging the world into darkness, the God of Secrets pulled out an axe and cleaved His Brother-in-law in twain.
From the right half of Romulus’s body grew Roman, God of Romance, Music, Theater, and Literature, and from the left half grew Remus, God of Sex, Sculpture, Painting, and Weaving. The sun and the moon, separated once more.
The other Gods, while now more mistrustful of Janus — though none would say so, lest they face the unrestrained wrath of either Janus or His Husband — were pleased with this change.
After that, almost all of Romulus’s temples were added on to so that Roman and Remus each had their own shrine and new temples were built, leaving out Romulus’s shrine altogether, though they did still have a common shrine where priestesses and disciples alike could pray to both Gods at once.
Despite the fact that it had stood abandoned for years, the Lykos temple — which lay in the middle of the woods of the same name — was Roman’s favorite temple. It had been the spiritual center of Romulus’s cult during His time, and even now, it was still the home of Romulus’s sacred wolf pack.
Running with the wolf pack was one of Roman’s favorite things to do. He loved the dirt beneath His paws, the wind running through His white fur, and the feeling of taking down prey with His sharp teeth.
But most of all, He loved getting to take a break from being a God; wolves didn’t care about Gods, wolves cared about their pack, and their hunt. And of course, when Roman decided to take time to run with the pack, for a night at least, Remus came too — it was just as much His pack as it was Roman’s.
So Roman and Remus ran with the wolf pack through Lykos.
Roman prowled forward slowly, carefully, the deer He was stalking had no idea of its danger. It was a large stag, with mighty antlers and its fair share of battle scars; a kill like that would feed the pack well — Roman and Remus did not need to eat such mortal fodder, but there was something incredibly satisfying about it.
Roman was almost close enough to pounce when Remus came thundering up behind Him. The stag, having obviously heard the ruckus, took off running.
“REMUS!” Roman barked unhappily, but Remus just laughed as he continued after the stag.
Roman shook His head. Wolves were not pursuit predators, but of course, Remus could hunt however He liked.
A howl went up in the opposite direction than Remus had gone, signifying that another member of the pack had made a kill and was inviting the rest of the pack to indulge with them. Roman continued the howl, but did not move to join them — he preferred meat slayed by his own teeth and claws.
A few minutes later, He heard Remus howl His victory over the stag. He heard a few other wolves moving in Remus’s direction to share His kill with Him, but still, Roman continued to search for His own prey. Preferably, He’d find something before Remus decided to ‘help’ Him again.
A rabbit ran across His path, but it was small, and Roman was not interested in so weak a challenge. He crept on until he found a doe drinking from a stream. She was not as big as the stag, but she would do.
Roman stalked closer, keeping a careful ear out for signs of Remus’s less-than-graceful approach. Just as Roman was about to pounce, the doe seemed to catch wind of Him, she tried to take off running just as the stag had, but it was too late, and Roman quickly took her down. She struggled a little, but as Roman tore at her throat, her struggles lessened until finally, she was still.
Roman howled out His own kill, and relished the answering howls that came back. A mother wolf appeared then with her two cubs, and Roman graciously allowed them first pick.
As the mother and cubs ate, Roman noticed for the first time that there seemed to be quite a few birds in the trees. Birds were normal, as far as Roman could tell, there were birds everywhere, but He had never noticed so many diurnal birds out at night before.
Scavengers, perhaps, except that even when the mother and cubs moved away from the felled doe to allow Roman His fill, the birds made no move to approach the carcass.
Roman tore chunks of savory meat from the doe, and as no other wolves had appeared to share in His kill, He ate until a sharp feeling, almost like that of an axe, struck Him — it was not a physical blow, but it still managed to knock some of the wind out of him.
The birds seemed to sense the change too, as they suddenly all at once took to the skies, cawing and clamoring as they went. Roman was too stunned to pay them much mind — someone had entered His temple.
Another God had the audacity to enter one of Roman and Remus’s temples uninvited.
“The nerve of some people,” Remus sniffed, jogging through the woods until He was at Roman’s side. “Don’t Gods have any manners?”
Roman rolled his eyes at the question. Remus had a habit of entering other Gods’ temples to annoy Them — He was lucky that Janus seemed to like Him, otherwise Patton might have smote Him long ago. His favorite target was the God of Wisdom, but so far, said God had yet to rise to the challenge, though if He thought ignoring Remus would work, perhaps He was not as wise as He ought to be.
It was hard to pinpoint which temple the intruder was in since, as far as Roman knew, They were in Romulus’s shrine. If this God had gone into one of Roman’s shrines, or one of Their common shrines, then He would be able to find Them, but as it stood, all He knew was that there was a God in one of Their temples somewhere. Not the most helpful lead.
“Well?” Remus asked, having had waited for Roman to collect His thoughts while He scratched His own mangy fur against a tree. He did not care as much about intruders.
“They’re somewhere,” Roman concluded, unhelpfully.
“Great! Well I vote that we don’t worry about it. Maybe it’s Janny, vandalizing one of Romulus’s statues for fun!” Remus shrugged His shoulders as well as a wolf could do.
“Maybe,” Roman agreed tentatively. Janus’s feud with Romulus seemed to have ended with His forced mitosis, but perhaps the God of Lies had felt the need to blow off some steam.
Roman tried to shake off the odd feeling of having a God in Their temple and continue the hunt with the rest of the pack, but that feeling was always there, in the back of his mind. When at last the pack had eaten their share and stretched their legs, the two Gods accompanied them back to the temple where they denned.
They had been intending to leave after that, but intriguingly, They found a God, asleep, beneath Romulus’s citrus tree.
Roman had never seen this God before, and he knew most of the rest of His fellow Gods very well. That wasn’t to say that there weren’t Gods that Roman didn’t know, just that it was uncommon.
Remus sniffed the other God curiously. “Why’s he dressed like a human?” He asked, wrinkling His nose, which came across as more of a snarl on His wolf muzzle.
“That’s what you’re focused on?” Roman yipped. “Why is He in Our temple? And why is He sleeping here?”
“Probably explains the birds at least,” Remus shrugged once more, before seemingly making up His mind and curling up on the intruding God’s left.
Birds? Roman wondered before suddenly remembering the crows. The birds had come with the God, though why, Roman didn’t know — it wasn’t like peacocks followed Him around.
“Why are you sleeping with Him anyway?” Roman demanded.
“Warm.” Was Remus’s only answer.
Roman sniffed suspiciously at the other God for another moment before He was forced to admit, Remus looked comfortable and He was jealous. He curled up on the God’s other side, and He had to admit, it was comfortable.

Well… I told you that the translating process was supposed to be fast.
And it actually was, so here I am with the first chapter of part 1 – Rain. I really hope you will enjoy it and, please, do not hesitate to let me know your thoughts about it! ❤️
Small warning: there will be references to A Canticle in Steps, but you don’t have to read that one to understand this fiction. You’re free to do it if you want, otherwise you will find everything here.

SUMMARY:
The first time, rain put out the fire.
The second time, the fire burned everything down, leaving only ashes behind.
Only the third time, in a moist and fertile soil, a blossom found the strength to grow.
