Antis will be like “Jiang Cheng never viewed Wei Wuxian as family, he was treated like a servant!!! 😠😠😠” but like… if I showed up day-drunk to work, stopped performing my basic duties, kept skipping out when the most support was needed rebuilding, escalated fights during diplomatic events, and refused to tell anyone why I’d started behaving like this, I would definitely get fired. But instead Wei Wuxian has to quiet quit and then actually quit when even that doesn’t work, because as far as we can tell Jiang Cheng would've let him stay as first disciple forever no matter what. So like, if Jiang Cheng thinks of himself as just Wei Wuxian's boss, he does a pretty bad job of treating Wei Wuxian as just an employee.

Are there complicated class dynamics and internal senses of responsibility and debt and duty and obligation fucking both of them up? Absolutely. But Wei Wuxian is definitely not just a servant or a debtor, it’s much, much messier and more complicated than that--which is kind of the problem.

oh my gosh nonny you asked this a million million years ago and boy do I EVER

Modern AU neighbors starts out when they're apartment neighbors and become friends through any number of fun means such as:

WWX cooking disaster that sets off the building fire alarm -> JYL offering to teach him

both of them surreptitiously caring for the sad little abandoned plants on the roof

they're in some sort of class together and then realize they're neighbors and become study buddies

Eventually they're in and out of each other's apartments and lives so often that it just makes sense for one day Jiang Yanli to ask "Would you ever want to buy a house?" And they find one that needs some love but has great bones, so they buy it and fix it up and have a big housewarming party for all their friends and get a cat and grow flowers and tomatoes and way too many zucchini out back. The garden is a riot, but well-loved, and their home is always full of life.

(Jiang Cheng is very suspicious of Wei Wuxian at first, convinced he's playing some kind of weird long con on his sister. He comes around eventually when he realizes they just... make each other happy.)

They know they both adore kids, and eventually Jiang Yanli confides that she'd like to try to get pregnant. There is a brief and hilarious moment of uuuuhhhhhh before she goes, "I wanted your opinions on a donor, Wei Wuxian," and then he's like OH!!! and then oh my GOSH he's just the most supportive partner all through her prenatal checkups and morning sickness and weird cravings and scent aversions and other indignities of growing a whole person in your body. It's weird and it's hard, but she's so so excited to be a mom on her own terms.

And then about a month before she's due, Wei Wuxian comes home late one day from his afterschool program (he's a middle school art teacher in this AU; the baby's nursery is MAGAZINE worthy) with this kinda shellshocked kid in tow all, "So I know it's not the best timing, but Xuanyu needs a place to stay, at least for a little while, and—"

"—and obviously our home is open as long as they'd like." It's not even a debate. (Jiang Yanli knows he's been worried about Mo Xuanyu for months, and neither of them have ever been one to turn away someone in need.)

So then she has baby A-Ling, who is the most perfect child ever born, according to his uncle, who is over all the TIME, which works out perfectly once her maternity leave is up. Mo Xuanyu stays with them and absolutely flourishes in a home where they can be themself. Wei Wuxian paints a brand new mural on their fence every spring, and their garden is still wild but they've learned what grows well, and occasionally he gets to tell off some nosy person who makes assumptions about their domestic arrangements, which is very fun for him. They're all just... very happy. It's a home full of love.

And because I cannot resist torturing Jiang Cheng just a little bit, a few years down the road, while he's tearing his hair out over his wedding arrangements — "I have planned a thousand of these, but I somehow cannot get my in-laws to accept that the fucking peonies will be OUT OF SEASON" — Jiang Yanli lets slip that she and Wei Wuxian have been technically married on paper for over a decade. So then he gets to be performatively outraged about not getting to plan her wedding — "We didn't want a wedding, didi, that was the whole point of not telling anyone" — which makes him feel better, because Jiang Yanli understands her little brother.

SO YEAH. QPPs Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian. 10/10 here for it!!!

this is half stolen from a fic I read once but I think that post canon wei wuxian would wear certain clothes and carry himself in a certain way to invoke the image of the yiling laozu whenever he needs to intimidate people to get things he wants from them. he's sort of just living in domestic bliss doing whatever the fuck he wants but he's still very good at manipulating peoples perception of him, and he doesn't let the cultivation world forget that he's dangerous and scary and can kill them if he wants to. gusu is hosting an important trade conference and he's there in his nice hanfu with chenqing to make sure things go well for them

jiang cheng is absolutely a fish guy. I don't know why I think this but it's just true. he can't have dogs so he goes to fish (he could have gotten dogs after wei wuxians death but he doesn't. he keeps chenqing for 16 years. much to think about). he's obsessive over it and spends way too much of the sects income on things for his fish. no one else takes care of the fish they're His fish and he is solely responsible for them unless he has to travel, in which case only the most trusted advisors are permitted to take care of the fish. he can tell them all apart and they all have stupid names like sweetheart and baby

jiang yanli is an Excellent diplomat. jiang fengmian brought her along on so many negotiations and diplomatic endeavors that she picked up on a lot of it, and the fact that she's always settling quarrels w her brothers has made her a great mediator. I think her style of negotiation is kind of sneaky? like she's very charming and sweet and people see her as being fragile, so they don't want to upset her by being too "aggressive" and are inclined to listen to her when she's trying to calm people down in an argument

all together uhm 🥺 I think that jiang cheng and wei wuxian definitely rope jiang yanli into their mischief when they're younger. people think wei wuxian is the only mischievous one because he always "starts it" but as much as jiang cheng clamors about Bringing Shame To Their Sect, he wouldn't be there if he didn't actually want to be, and jiang yanli says she's tagging along on their misadventures to make sure they don't get into Too much trouble, but really she thinks their shenanigans are funny and has fun running around with them doing silly stuff. and the boys absolutely make jiang yanli vouch for their innocence because madam yu and jiang fengmian are much more inclined to believe her over them. no baba wei wuxian and jiang cheng weren't surfing on their swords on the river I was there I saw the whole thing I'd never lie to you would I. don't look at that big crack in the dock post thats always been there don't worry about it

So, I’ve [23M] recently come under hot water with my wife [25F] after I gave her another anniversary gift. It was a 20-piece cobalt blue dutch cooking set with matching cooking mats, oven mitts, cutting board, and utensils. I was planning to have that one shipped to our summer house in the Mediterranean since we were going there for a vacation soon, but it looks like I might be returning it. I thought that she would really like it as cooking has been her favorite hobby ever since she was a child. I usually get her a new cooking set for each house we buy; like I got her a bronze cooking set after we bought a flat in France, but this time it actually made her really upset! She burst into tears and started talking about how we never truly talked about the things we liked to do when we were courting and how we’ve fixed ourselves into a relationship where we give each other meaningless gifts. She also likened us to our parents’ marriages, only that we didn’t fight as much as they do.

I got upset at first and shot back that she never tried to talk to me about any other things that she liked; that she only ever showed me the side of her that liked to cook. In the heat of the moment, I also made the quip that “unlike our fathers, I’m not afraid to divorce you if this marriage turns sour”. However, I really regret what I said and I want to make it up to her. I’m not really sure how to do that, however. Usually I buy her a gift if she gets a bit miffed with me, but I think that would only make this situation worse. I’m not the best with words either, and I’m afraid I may make her cry again.

As things are, we haven’t spoken in a couple days. We still sleep in the same bed and whenever I wake up breakfast is done, and lunch and dinner is cooked while I’m working, so things have only really changed on the social side of things.

Everyone, I really love my wife. I will admit that I used to not like her because when we were younger our mothers made a deal that if we were two separate genders then we would have to marry when we were older. I hated the idea of marrying someone I didn’t love, and I took the arranged marriage out on her by pretty much either pretending she didn’t exist or I was kind of rude to her.

I got lucky when I was 16, I went to a prestigious school program offered by one of the other families in our social circles. My wife’s little brother and foster brother were allowed to attend, and about three months in I said something kinda bad and her foster brother knocked my lights out, so our fathers ended up breaking the engagement. You may be thinking “how is that lucky?”, but by breaking the engagement I wasn’t forced to be with her, and a couple years later I decided to actually try to get to know her a bit and ended up falling in love. So, I guess I should probably thank her foster brother for punching me too huh?

But anyway, how should I fix this? Can I fix this? Or was I too much of an asshole and ruined my marriage to the best thing that’s ever happened me ever since my dad got sick and had to step down as family head?

I’ve decided to update everyone on how things went with my wife.

So...it went really well!

I sucked it up and sat her down in the living room and we talked it out for hours. We went over our relationship from the beginning to now, we talked about our childhoods, our parents, our hobbies, pretty much everything.

I’ve learned that my wife loves wood carving, pyrography, map making, embroidery, and jet skiing! And she also likes the idea of entomology but her mother wouldn’t allow her to get into it cause it’s not “lady like”. I’m gonna get her some books on entomology as a surprise gift when we head to the Mediterranean.

We’ve also decided to talk to a marriage counselor. While we were still in the no talking phase my wife apparently spoke to her foster brother and he suggested counseling. I agreed cause it can’t hurt can it?

I’d like to thank everyone who gave me a push in the right direction. Our marriage is saved because of you all!

Another one done! Believe it or not, Jin Zixuan was a bit harder to write than Jiang Cheng, not because he’s hard to understand, but because there’s so little of him in the canon story I had to find a way to actually give this chapter substance.

Hmm, gimme ideas on who I should do next. Su She? Jin Zixun? Wen Chao or Wen Xu? The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to try and come up with something new.

So, you know how all of Yunmeng people are considered free-spirited and rebels? I want that to apply to Yanli as well.

In a modern time au, Jin Zixuan is Lan Zhan’s best friend, which means he has to interact with Wei Ying often, and has heard him talk about his sister extensively. The way Wei Ying describes her makes her seem perfect, Jin Zixuan thinks it wouldn't hurt to go out with her. His mom had been pestering him to get married lately, maybe Jiang Yanli could be the one

(In this au Wei Ying doesn't hate Jin Zixuan because he has not been rude to his jiejie, and he's Lan Zhan’s best friend, which makes him tolerable)

So after checking with Yanli, Wei Ying gives her number to Jin Zixuan They start to text, he's enjoying their conversations a lot, and after a day or two, he finally asks her out.

"Oh, don't worry" she replies, when he offers to pick her up, "that's around the time I close my store, I can pick you up instead"

Unusual, but he accepts, thrilled.

She pulls up in a dark purple motorcycle, tattoos covering both of her arms and piercings covering her ears and face.

She's definitely not what Jin Zixuan was expecting, but he can't say he's mad about it. On their way to the park where he had planned their picnic, he tries his best to empty his head of all thoughts. He can't get hard while being so close to her, that would me mortifying.

He can't help but think the sudden stops she's making are just to mess with him, to make his front rub over her back even when he tries to stay away. (She's definitely doing it on purpose, it's cute the way his hands clench around her middle every time they bump together)

The date passes in a blur, that's how much of a good time Jin Zixuan is having. Yanli proves to be everything Wei Ying had said, and more, by the end of their time together Zixuan knows he wants to marry her

Sometimes (only sometimes), Jiang Yanli wishes she was close with her mother.

She recalls the deeply sowed, deeply buried envy she held towards her high school friends, who all gushed about going out shopping with their moms, who went to them for advice on boys, who could confide in their mothers for all the important problems of becoming a young woman.

(Jiang Yanli tries to ignore who those girls were: blond haired, blue eyed, maybe brunette, their mothers the same way, who took to fierce and bright makeup and talked boisterously, so, so very different to Jiang Yanli’s plumper figure and shyer constitution and preferences; like mother, like daughter, in those instances.

Jiang Yanli has never been called her mother’s daughter before.)

That isn’t to say that Yu Ziyuan was never there for her. She was, with her harsh tone when asking about academics. But Jiang Yanli knew that her mother found something missing with her eldest daughter, something so important that she put all of her efforts into her youngest, her son.

Jiang Yanli loves her brother, but there will always be a wound upon her heart, so deep that it has long since been covered by newly grown muscle and skin, that resents how Jiang Cheng takes up all of Yu Ziyuan’s time. Oh, it breaks her dear brother down. Jiang Yanli saw how Jiang Cheng wore away underneath the piercing gaze of their mother, how the expectations of greatness and ambition tore apart Jiang Cheng’s sense of identity and self until neither he nor his sister could tell what was Jiang Cheng and what was just a statue built by their mother.

It’s ironic, how Yu Ziyuan contradictorily wanted both the eldest daughter picking up the slack for her in handling her brother (brothers, eventually, though Yu Ziyuan would never ask Yanli explicitly to care for Wei Wuxian) and the strong, independent young woman to represent the best elements of her mother. When Yu Ziyuan barked at her for not having any ambitions in life, she turned around and expected Jiang Yanli to babysit her siblings, to be a soft, motherly figure in her place.

Jiang Yanli can’t be the epitome of the 1960s Chinese woman, straddling the line between the traditional, domestic mother and the modern, ambitious businesswoman. It’s an impossible standard, one that even Yu Ziyuan failed at.

It’s exhausting, how much Yu Ziyuan’s simultaneous overbearing and absent nature tears Jiang Yanli apart. And yet, she still wishes for her mother’s firm hand, her flashing eyes, her impossibly high expectations, and most importantly, just the whiff of praise, to let her know that yes, she is succeeding, she isn’t a failure of a daughter.

She stares at her own reflection in the mirror, turning her body and face from side to side.

Where Yu Ziyuan is sharp and stern, Jiang Yanli is round and soft. Where Yu Ziyuan barks and scolds, Jiang Yanli soothes and comforts. Where Yu Ziyuan is ambitious, Jiang Yanli is… not.

What has she been, except exactly what her parents, her brothers, needed?

let's imagine that (somehow) everyone goes to the same school and they all live in the same dorms.

jc is very pretty and everyone wants a piece of him and he doesn't mind giving~

-Wei Wuxian-

they managed to be roommates, as jc was much more comfortable with someone he knew than someone he wasn't familiar with. And familiar with they were.

They actually already had a little /something/ going on already, where they were fooling around a lot behind yzy and jfm backs, hiding from everyone else. They were each other first in many things, usually experimenting with each other.

now having a whole room for themselves only gave them more opportunities to fuck like they want, without needing to make sure no one is around. They can be a bit louder than before, but jc is scared to be caught by others so he tries to keep it down.

nhs is actually the first one in the bunch to approach him first. they were already friends from high school so jc was already somewhat at ease with him. Plus nhs may or may not have a slight crush on jc because he is his type, but it's not a serious crush.

they both agreed that it was alright if it never leads to a serious relationship, they are playing around and nhs finds it just fine.

It gives jc the chance to switch a bit. Not that sex with wwx is bad, but he likes to top from time to time and nhs seems more than happy to bottom for him.

they usually try to do it when their roommate isn't there (tho wwx very much knows about it, they don't hide much from each other). If the moment needs it, they will take a hotel room when the horniness is too much to wait for an opening.

He is the first one of the seniors to approach him. it took a lot of flirting with jc (and seeing jc shyly respond with some flirting too). They usually meet in the library where jc likes to study (it's quieter and wwx doesn't go there much, hence more quietness).

lxc doesn't have the advantage of first really knowing jc, so he takes him on dates to make the other one more comfortable around him. clearly, they like each other and soon jc wonders how it would be to be manhandled by those strong hands (he has felt them on his waist, they are big, warm and very likely strong too).

the first shy jc is the one to kiss him first, trapping him against a shelf of the library, in a deserted corner. lxc took the given opportunity and they kissed a lot that time. they had to finish up with a handjob in the corner.

afterwards, they very much went farther, jc was more than happy to have strong hands on him like that. much like nhs, they try doing it when they have the time and the room are free (tho when lxc is horny, he is more likely to just rent a room for them, which is often).

the next morning was very awkward and they were unsure how to tell jyl about it. After all, they couldn't /not/ tell her, they didn't have it in them to not tell.

Sure thing, it was a really awkward meeting when they did so two days later, both young men looking ready to die for the stupid shit they did (as much of an angel as jyl can be, it was a rough couple of months before she got over it fully. they are both people she loves and trust, she never expected them to do that)

not the best experience for jc (even tho the sex was good)

-Lan Wangji-

lwj wanted to know what was so good about jx, since wwx would never shut up about him. Sure, they've known each other in school (just like with nhs), but he really doesn't get it. Isn't jc just a grumpy guy who does nothing but study?

what is his surprise when he learns from his /brother/ that jc isn't as innocent as he seems to be (or as wwx seems to like to claim). But he still doesn't understand why wwx would prefer him over lwj. so he pursues him only to see it for himself. of course, jc doesn't necessarily enjoy the more aggressive way lwj comes at him (isn't he supposed to be a quiet person!! isn't he more like his brother!?).

but he would lie if he said he wasn't curious to see how lwj would perform compared to his brother. Is he as strong? Would he be more gentle or as merciless as lxc can be sometimes?

So they end up hooking up at some point for some vaguely angry sex because of course they too had an argument before that leading to sexual tension.

lwj is surprised at how nice it actually was and he can admit wwx might not be wrong. in a way, lwj still wants to steal wwx hearts, but when jc comes up to him for more he will never say no to him. Maybe he doesn't hate the young man as much as he might do (and jc doesn't seem to hate him like he thought jc did).

-Xue Yang-

jc is seriously unsure sometimes if xy is really a student or not. He never sees him in classes or anything study related but you bet he will see him at parties getting drunk and high, flirting with anyone that catches his eyes.

of course, he becomes one of those targets and xy seems to have quite some fun flirting with him and not discreetly at all.

One night jc is horny so he simply gives in. After all, if xy is so eager to have him why not?

what was supposed to be one-night stand ended up becoming a more regular thing. Jc also learns he might not be as vanilla as he was (well, he /does/ enjoy semi-public sex soo).

-Wen Ning-

wn is one of the rare shy friends wwx has. He's pretty quiet and can be a bit of a doormat sometimes. jc never spoke much with him until once at a party they ended up both outside for a breath (his head was killing him and he needed fresh air).

He ended up disappearing for the rest of the night, leaving the loud party for a 24h coffee shop where he ended up talking with wn and learning about him.

they ended up having more of these little moments where they just sit down and talk for a long time, having more points in common than they thought they might have.

wn ends up developing a crush on him (but doesn't make a move because he's sure jc is either dating wwx or nhs). of course, wwx (the little traitor!) ends up telling jc because he wants his friend to get it too.

jc is a bit surprised that the shy wn has a crush on him, but he doesn't mind, wn is good-looking and also looks strong too.

jc decide to give it a chance, rather amused at how flustered wn gets when he decides to really put his heart into flirting.

at some point wn finally gets it, jc /is/ flirting with him, so he tentatively kisses him one time, nearly running away when jc doesn't respond out of being stunned (a little shy /wen ning/ kissed him first?! damn).

Thing escalates from there because you can be sure jc will get it if wn finally gives in. It's a bit new, since jc has now gotten used to other rough or kinky sex. wn is so gentle with him, as if scared to hurt him. He doesn't hate it, it's nice to have someone caring like this.

although, when they switch, wn does seem to enjoy having it a bit rougher than what he gives (it take a couple of time for wn to finally get assured enough that he won't hurt him if he goes a bit rougher).

Now jc can chuckle and smirk anytime people comment on how wn must be an innocent child who never did anything.

-Wen Chao-

Wc hears rumours about jc and he tries to pursue him because "Ah! of course the great me can get into his pants too".

Yet, his way of doing is even more aggressive than lwj to the point where nmj and lxc end up asking him to fuck off (although lxc is more polite about it in his terrifying way to always be calm, nmj still looks like a bigger treat).

So he gives up (which his brother doesn't stop mocking for a while after all his claiming of it being so easy). He does throw a tantrum when he learns wn got jc ("fucking /Wen Ning/? are we talking about the same cousin here? quiet and shy /Wen Ning/ got jc? how?!?!") so he resumes his tries, but this time he tries to be more gentle and much less aggressive than (which make him allow on thin ice by everyone else protecting jc's ass).

jc eventually allows him after wc got angry again when he refused him. "Oh, so you think you are better than everyone else? I suppose I can judge on that, tho if you fail my expectation you ain't getting more" (which is a slap in the face, because /wn/ checks out?).

So wc makes sure to show all he has. jc has to admit, he isn't bad, but he isn't the greatest either when wx only search for his own pleasure and doesn't really care for jc's one. "You're boring," jc says as he clicks his tongue when wx comes once and he didn't (he can see in wc face that he did not like that comment) "Let me show you".

Cue power bottom jc showing wc how to actually pleasure him. "Come back when you actually learned to make your partner feel good and not just you," he says when they are done, going back to his room.

wc put his heart into actually learning because he cannot let his pride be this hurt by the fact that he sucks and his cousin does well.

-Jin Guangyao-

jgy approached jc when he learned from both his friend that they sleep with jc (but he doesn't know everyone basically knows and everyone is fine with sharing), but also that he caused trouble between jzx and jyl.

he just wants to investigate and make sure his best friends are not sleeping with someone who's just taking advantage of them.

His tentative to scare jc by subtle showing he knows he's sleeping around with basically the whole dormitory at this point doesn't work, as jc just brushes it off ("Sure, tell them").

this is an open secret, but no one mention really knowing about it so jgy thinks everyone is being tricked. he wants to make sure his friend won't be hurt, but he cannot find actual proof because even xy won't help him on this one ("I don't think your er-ge cares").

So he decides that his latest option is sleeping with jc himself! He can sacrifice himself to help his friends.

but it's actually pretty good? better than with any ex he ever had, and jc sure knows what he does when they switch up. he feels somewhat down now that he betrayed his friend and wants/more/.

"You really don't need to worry," jc tells him as they lay next to each other al sweaty, "Everyone knows, but it was fun seeing you trying to expose me".

jgy seems still a bit unsure, but jc basically straight up call his gege and they pretty much confirm on the phone that yeah, they know and are alright with it. cue the three of them having fun together with jc to show jgy that he can keep having fun with jc too.
