LOCATION — Peak Seasons Ballroom, Saints & Sinners event.

WHO — Elijah & Roman ( @rcmandaniels ).

Before the night even properly began, Elijah made a vow to himself to check his phone as minimally as he possibly could until he and Aslihan left the hotel room sometime tomorrow morning — at least. Not that he didn’t want to know about what the girls and all three of their cats were up to since they parted ways, but he had to admit that his parents were extremely excessive with relaying that information, down to documenting every little detail. Rightfully so, he supposed, since Rhiannon was their first and only grandchild, but the whole point of coming out and staying overnight at Peak Seasons was so they could spend uninterrupted time together, and the barrage of text messages coming through his phone wasn’t exactly helping. He’d appreciate it practically any other time except tonight, so he simply tried to stay away from it all together. It didn’t really work, though — Aslihan slipped away from him to chat with someone she knew and he peeked at his lockscreen to find three missed calls from his mother, which was . . . odd. At that point, he was unable to put the antics at home out of his mind and he headed away from the noisy ballroom to work out what was going on. He went farther out than the relatively quieter lobby, figuring that while he was away he might as well have a smoke. However, he instantly regretted it once the chilly outdoor wind whipped against his bare skin and he realized that his girlfriend still had his robe. He didn’t notice that Roman had been standing a short distance away from the exit either, otherwise that would have been enough to have the musician turn on his heel instantaneously and redirect back inside.

in case anyone gathered last night was sort of a bummer i tried to talk w new people and did the entire night took the bus together and because i didn't have social media and they didn't ask for my number or anything did not get anything of theirs <3 and it is making me remember a few months ago when i encountered the same guy at crj and magdalena bay and after magdalena bay he tried to make conversation with me and i kinda shut it down and i feel bad because he seemed nice and i'm pretty sure i hurt his feelings but anyways i brought home a very old outdoors chair that was on the curb because it looked normal at night and i was tipsy and now i just have to stare at it and think about how everyone thinks i'm super weird

like i know it's one occurrence but i do feel a bit... humiliated? that i approached them and talked to them and stuff because now it feels like they were humoring me. which like, i know they weren't but. i don't know i just don't get how people socialize. like i keep thinking that they were probably like 'lol that was so weird' to each other right after walking away. i don't know i know that this is oversharing and makes me seem quite pathetic but i am seriously so upset. and the reason i approached them is bc one had a jerma lockscreen so i cannot even watch jerma without thinking wow even other jerma fans think i'm socially constipated and a loser.

i don't know i should probably just move but i want to attempt to figure out what is going on with me medically before i move anywhere

📷 What’s set as your phone’s lockscreen?

It's almost always a picture of my niece. Right now, it's one of her all bundled up in her snowsuit with flower sunglasses on that I took a couple weeks ago when we were out playing in the snow together. It's my goal to teach her to love the outdoors.

🍪 If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

Probably a meal replacement cookie. Like one of those cookies you find at the Farmer's Market that's just loaded with oatmeal and cranberries and raisins and chocolate and peanut butter and chia and pumpkin seeds and like 10,000 other things. A cookie that is trying to do too much.

🧸 Favourite place to nap?

I'm boring; just my own bed in my own house. Bonus points if the sun is shining, the window is open, my sleep mask is on, and a cat is snuggled up with me.

💎 What’s your most prized possession?

Years ago, I would've said my special edition Rambaldi boxset of Alias or my camera. Nowadays, my car and my passport feel more important - but I don't know if those things would be described as possessions. So, I'm gonna say my hiking pack... switching from water bottles to a hydration bladder in a good bag was life changing.

🌸 Best compliment you ever received?

Hardest question to answer, every time. Someone sent me an anonymous ask a couple months ago (after I posted about one of the lifestyle shows I'd written over the summer being picked up for production) saying they were proud of me. I've been hoarding it in my inbox to re-read ever since.

Grief

Do you ever feel like you are grieving more than everyone else, even though you can’t claim the most connection to the person you lost?

Crying on my way to pick up a dogs ashes,

Sobbing on the way home,

Holding her to my chest.

I had to go to work that day,

So I couldn’t say goodbye enough.

At work, again, getting the news to a cats death,

Through a simple text.

Knowing that this would happen,

Inevitably,

To an outdoor cat,

The shock still pushes me into free fall.

When I got home, my family had already processed,

Apparently,

And laughed at the memory of her rigor-mortis-solid carcass not fitting into the box.

I didn’t have the chance to cry for that cat,

But the picture of her on my lockscreen

Still pulls me into the past.

I feel alone in these grievances,

Only once getting understanding from the other dogs,

Who have now moved on with the new puppy.
