In the end, politics was an accretion of personal decisions, and that means that the personality of the protagonists cannot be left out of the discussion. It determined not only how they reacted to the situations in which they found themselves, but how others reacted to them. The growing support for Edward IV in 1461 must have owed something to the realisation that he would make an effective king - whereas his father never seems to have been regarded in that light.
--Rosemary Horrox, "Personalities and Politics", The Wars of the Roses (Problems in Focus), edited by A.J Pollard
...When the worst had happened, and civil war was a reality, the overwhelming imperative was to find some way of restoring order. At the level of high politics, what this entailed in practice was a rallying around the de facto king. The Wars of the Roses, far from weakening the monarchy, actually strengthened it, since the king was the only man able to surmount faction. In spite of (Henry VI’s) manifest failings, Richard, duke of York's criticism of the regime commanded little high-level support - and would have commanded even less but for the crown's alienation of the junior branch of the Nevilles, headed by York's brother-in-law the earl of Salisbury. York in fact never did attain the political viability to break the vicious circle of temporary ascendancy and political exclusion. It was his son, Edward, earl of March, who finally mustered enough support to take the throne. He was able to do so in part because the situation had been transformed by the country's descent into open war, which reduced the compulsion to uphold the king as the embodiment of stability. Once it was no longer a matter of averting war, but of stopping it, political opinion began to divide more evenly between Henry VI and his rival. However, the crucial change may well have been York's own death at the Battle of Wakefield late in 1460. In the ensuing months Edward of York was able to present himself as the man who could mend the shattered political community. That self-identification with unity proved immensely potent, and it was not a role which could plausibly have been filled by his father. In the eyes of contemporaries, York had been the begetter of faction: a man tainted by his willingness to go to extremes.

Jealous Jason Todd Headcanon
~loooong requested hope you enjoy some brotherly competition~
- jason had no idea he wanted you until dick called "dibs" the first night he met jason's mysterious "friend" and newest bat-recruit
- at first, jason didn't care. like at all. but that never stopped him from being an asshole
- "my brother y/n really? what's there to like? i didn't see you as a musical theatre and dad-joke enjoyer" he'd scoff anytime dick tried to make a move
- that didn't stop richard fucking grayson.
- "hey! y/n! fancy seeing you here!" .. "it's the batcave dick i work here" .. "oh, well are you working all night? maybe we can grab some big belly burger after?" .. "we have patrol together you dork"
- honestly, it was endearing being adored, worshipped even. from handwritten poems, to a little mini batarang necklace, and all the weapons your heart could desire
- and for all his dork-tendencies, dick knew a thing or too about hand placement...
- "put me down richard" .. "you literally fell into my arms" .. "i would've landed on my feet" .. "sure princess, but aren't my arms a little better?" he'd tease, sweeping you bridal style out the back door of the gala you two had just rescued
- it was somewhere in between the gift giving, rooftop dates, and stolen glances that jason realized he might want -slightly, just a tiny bit- more.
- okay; he wanted you all to himself.
- but he's always been shit at explaining it
- where dick was obvious and flirtatious, jason started subtle: always inching closer to you, keeping a longing gaze set on your every move-even if it meant tripping himself up in battles- you noticed he would sooner get shot than let you catch a scrape
- and just like dick's coddling, it got annoying
- "jace i've been on the team for months, i think i can watch out for myself" .. "i know, i protect the people i care about" his response was almost a whisper, and before you could pry further, he disappeared, replaced with a familiar cheesy grin "hi y/n! wanna catch a movie tonight?" .. "uh, one sec dick! i need to check on jace"
- but jason was never anywhere to be found. every time he let you in, he disappeared just as quick.
- when you started toying with new weaponry jason was there, you still got butterflies remembering the way he pressed himself against you while fixing your form, his calloused fingertips lighting fires as he subtly adjusted your grip on your gun
- "jay is this right?" .. "mhm your grip is perfect, but the recoil will get you, slide your leg backwards to brace for the impact of firing" .. the minute his hand touched your thigh a shiver ran across your body, against your shaking will .. "oh, sorry i didn't mean to-" .. you cut him off "no it's good, you're good" but before you could turn around to unpack the cloud of tension in the room, jason cleared his throat and gruffly said "fire" ruining any chance of an emotional conversation. three perfect shots to the targets, and with a satisfying nod he was gone once again
- so when dick asked you out on a real date, to a restaurant whose menu alone gave you anxiety at the thought of ordering, you realized you had to give jason the ultimatum
- but for once in his (second) life, jason was way ahead of you.
- "you said yes to dick?" jason was sitting at your desk when you entered your own room, overly dramatic but it was jason todd after all.
- "do i have a reason to say no?"
- "you hate fancy restaurants. you need like a week to plan what you'll order otherwise you'll just be stressed the whole time"
- you rolled your eyes, but jason wasn't finished: "and you hate movies, sitting in one place watching a film you probably haven't heard of, pretending to enjoy the nuance"
- he wasn't wrong. "whatever jace, that doesn't-" .. "i can tell you what's gonna happen. he'll order a wine too sweet for your taste, and talk to the waiter enough to make you want to crawl under the table. then after a perfectly lovely dinner he'll take you to a rooftop to 'show you the sights' and you'll have your first kiss. but you hate the city skyline, it reminds you you're far from home. you like the sound of the ocean and the rusting of the forest. you like something real."
- your heart was in your throat. but you needed something more: "say it jason. don't tell me the future with dick. fucking say it."
- jason stood up, closing the distance between you, eyes now desperate and wild: "say what? that i've loved you since the minute i lost you? that i feel like ive known you forever? that i don't need to learn to love you like he does, i was built for it? that i feel like i was made for you? how do i put it in a few useless words"
- "you just did jay." you whispered, letting him lock his lips in yours with a smile.
- "please go break richard's fucking heart and come home to me." he grumbled, to which you agreed, letting dick down softly and promising to set him up with one of your friends in return for his kindness- a deal which he wouldn't let you forget
- years later, it was more of a household joke, dick claiming he was the catalyst to your and jason's lovestory. to which jason wholly despised, but you never minded giving dick a little credit

Chapter 2 - The Patrol
‘Someone has to leave first. This is a very old story. There is no other version of this story.’  - Richard Silken, The Worm King’s Lullaby
There is a thin sheet of ice covering the streams that are heading downwards. It crunches under the hooves of their horses that dutifully carry them up the hill and past the gas station. Joel is glad that it's Tommy next to him. He's more tense than he's felt in ages, a gnawing feeling in his stomach that has little to do with the skipped breakfast and a lot with the worry that is etched into the frown between his brows. He wouldn't want anyone to see him like this, much less try and calm him down, something he knows is a lost battle.
“They might be fine, Joel,” his younger brother says gently, just loud enough for him to hear. Tommy thinks there will be no response until one comes, a little too late for it to not be premeditated.
“She talked about leaving, sometimes. They would be stupid enough to run off-”
“And leave Jackson?” Tommy raises a brow. “Maria said their house looked normal, all their things still in place. They wouldn't be stupid enough to leave all that behind.”
Joel doesn't want to hear it. He knows, better than anyone. Knows that you wouldn't just leave, not without saying goodbye to the children you'd come to care about so much. Would you leave him without a goodbye?
He almost hopes you would. Because if you didn't leave willingly, what was the alternative? It would've been nearly impossible for someone to take you from inside Jackson with no one noticing. But he can't shake the feeling that something is off.
It’s Tommy who has to keep reminding him to ride slow, to keep an eye on the ground for possible tracks. Joel just wants to go, to spur Old Beardy on until they're galloping up the hill, despite not knowing where it is he needs to go. He just wants to find you. Preferably in one piece, happy and healthy.
He would’ve missed it.
The small footprints leading off the road and onto a smaller path, one that's twisting through pines and further into the woods.
Tommy nods. “Pretty sure ‘tis the one that leads to the hunting cabin.”
It only takes a few minutes for them to be sure. The wooden cabin is hidden away behind a few trees, difficult to spot if you don't know where to look. It doesn't really serve any purpose, at least not anymore. The roof at the back caved in years ago, allowing rain and plants alike to enter the dimly lit room. It’s less than five miles from the gate of Jackson, tucked away from the main road.
He can’t help but think that this would be the perfect place to run off to. Or to hide a body.
Joel is off his horse in a second, not even bothering to tie the stallion's halter to the wooden posts in front of the cabin. Without thinking, he tugs his revolver out of his waistband, using his foot to nudge the door open.
He smells it before his eyes even have a chance to adjust to the dim light. The unmistakable stench of blood. And mixed with it, creating an odor that immediately makes him sick to his stomach, the smell of gunpowder in the air.
***
The sun has been slowly rising while you’ve been flipping through the pages, trying to find the volumes you’re looking for. The library of Jackson, though rather small, has been frequented more and more, especially in the winter months when the weather doesn’t always allow activities outside and people resort to what they’ve always known: Books.
The entire place is supposed to be relocated soon, to a small store on main street. But compared to the greenhouses needing repairs and the stables being expanded, books don't seem to be a priority for most of the townsfolk.
“Books can’t feed us or keep us safe,” Maria pointed out when you brought the slow progress up to her. You politely disagree. You feel like you could live off books for the rest of your life.
Still, packing up everything means the old place, a shed tucked away behind the church, is currently a mess. Sagging bookshelves, a leaky roof and too many books for too little space means chaos. One that only few bother to navigate in its current state. You among them.
It was the crack of dawn when you slipped out of the house, deciding to let Lane sleep in while you walked through the still empty streets to the far end of the town, hoping to get the library work out of the way before the first lesson of the day.
Maria is the one that finds you, making your head peek up from between two shelves with a frown. “You changed your mind on those books?”
She gives a small laugh, one that sounds oddly like relief. Then her face becomes stern again, the look she carries much more often. “You two have some explaining to do, do you realize that?”
Now it's your turn to frown. “We two?” She pauses at that, looking around the small room. But there is no one here but you and her and the characters bleeding from the pages.
“Is Lane not with you?”
You shake your head, turning your attention back to the book in your hands. “She has the 8AM class today.”
“She's not there,” Maria curtly responds. You can tell she's trying to keep her voice steady but there is a hint of anxiety regardless.
“Then she overslept again,” you half guess-half ask, closing the book again.
“She's not at home either.”
An odd feeling crawls over your body. You can't remember what was in your hands a moment ago, but the question is forgotten in an instant. Maria carefully watches as you step out from between the shelves, her tone still gentle. “I've sent Tommy and Joel out to search. We thought you two snuck out.”
You feel numb as you shake your head. “No, I- I didn't see her this morning. I thought she was still asleep.” You rack your brain for the memories of this morning, of last night, of the last week even. But nothing comes to mind, nothing out of the ordinary.
“I was out late last night, finishing up some paperwork,” you mutter, more to yourself than the woman in front of you, retracing your steps in your mind. “Lane got home before me, I had dinner, we talked about blueberries-”
“Blueberries?” Maria asks, her hand already back on the doorknob. She seems restless and it's that fleeting detail that worries you more than anything. Maria stays in control. Always.
“Yeah, we- It doesn't matter. I don't know where she is,” you finish lamely, getting up and joining her at the door. But she hasn't moved yet.
“You should stay at home. I'm sure she'll show up again soon and if she comes back to your place, someone should be there.” You nod but your mind is already drifting again. Lane’s been doing fine, good. So have you, really. Maria gently reaches for your shoulder, steering you out of the shed and towards the church, down the street that leads to the center of Jackson.
You're passing the small graveyard that's protected by brick walls, the stones already withered, pale in contrast to the dark metal fence running along on top. The gate is ajar, but you barely pay it any attention as the information settles in your brain. It takes a few seconds for it to reach your mouth and leave your lips.
“She went out a few times.”
“Out?” Maria enquires, raising an eyebrow as her attention shifts back to you.
“I thought she'd met someone. Cat and her were pretty close and I figured-” You give a small shrug. It's more than uncomfortable, suddenly, and absurd, that you're discussing Lane's private life so openly, with Maria of all people.
“Don't tell her I said that,” you add quickly.
Maria nods as you reach the end of the brick wall. “I won't. I'll get back to the city hall and see if there’s any news yet. You go home.”
Your head nods as if on its own accord. Maria has already turned her back towards you when you pipe up. “Maria?”
She pauses, her back straightening a bit. “Yes?”
“You don't think anything happened to Lane, do you?”
The older woman shakes her head softly. “No. I'm sure she's fine. Now get home. Maybe she's already there.”
And she hurries off, leaving you at the corner of the street with a trembling body and a heavy feeling in your stomach. For a fleeting moment, you allow your thoughts to wander past the point you've been dreading to consider. What if something has happened? If Lane did sneak out, maybe with Cat, maybe alone, and got into some sort of situation? What if she's hurt?
The sky has turned from pink to a light blue, only a few clouds piling around the mountains on the horizon. You glance down at your hands, shaking ever so slightly. You decide to blame it on the cold. The cold that may be getting to your head as well. Because after a few moments, you turn on your heels, heading for the stables. It's only a few rows of houses until the large wooden wall looms in front of you, blocking out the little sunlight you could get in the morning. The wall that protects you from what lies beyond. Infected and Raiders and maybe, you think, as you slip into the stables, maybe answers.

DP x DC Writing Prompt #10
Damian wakes up to low-pitched arguing, and in his daze thinks the hand running through his hair is Richard's.
"S'rry," he murmurs, turning his cheek into the hand. His head hurts, and Richard's hand is cool against his cheek, delicate nails ghosting over his scalp.
Hm. Richard does not have delicate nails. Nor a woman's voice.
"-lty is to Danny, all you've done is put a bigger target on our backs!"
"So be it," the young woman says, voice measured. It's her hand that's in Damian's hair. He'd pull away but his body is weighed down, eyelids barely ably to slip open to grab a glimpse of ginger hair before slamming shut again.
He's...drugged. He thinks. Nothing he recognizes immediately, but it's been a while since his poisoning sessions and thinking right now is difficult. His mask is still on, which means his identity is intact. There's nothing he can do except hope it will stay that way.
And so he sinks back under.
Some time later, he resurfaces with more lucidity. He's still costumed, mask on. His body still feels heavy, but this time he can wedge his eyes open enough to catch three figures next to the bed he now lies on. The redhead stands closest.
"--you an out," she is saying, her back to Damian. The other two, a pale girl with pitch black hair and a boy wearing a red cap, look at each other.
"That's not what we're asking for, and you know it!" The pale girl yells.
"That doesn't mean you shouldn't take it." The woman says, her voice extremely level in comparison. This only seems to agitate the girl further.
"Team Phantom means we make decisions as a team, Jazz." The boy says through grit teeth. "And if you had run this by us, we would've,"
"Said no--" the pale girl says, meanly.
"--At least figured out a better way," the boy says, head turning sharply towards the girl. "Between this and Jefferson you've been making really rash choices. We can't find Danny if we get caught by the Justice Loogies--"
"Team Phantom," the redhead interrupts. She turns towards Damian, and if she notices he's awake, she doesn't say anything. "You really don't get it, do you. There is no Team Phantom, because Danny's gone. We're not going to find him."
"Stop eating their bs--"
"Stop living in denial, Sam. Both of you. We can't find Danny because Danny's not anywhere to be found."
"They wouldn't get rid of him--"
"Why wouldn't they? Don't you see?" Jazz says, whirling around. She waves a blurry arm in Damian's direction.
"They can recreate the experiment anytime they want. And they do want. They found his genetic doppelgänger when they got their hands on Robin's blood. That's what they had on file in Jefferson."
Jefferson, Damian thinks. It's familiar. Information starts to filter in. It's not a person, but a place. There was an explosion at a government facility. Blew up three city blocks. 45 Casualties.
The redhead's a terrorist. He thinks. Redhead.
Fuck. She'd been getting mugged. He'd rescued her. Her face had been bruised.
She'd wanted to go to the hospital. Held onto his cape for dear life. Flinched back from Richard.
He'd smirked at Grayson before offering to escort her.
He'd felt important.
...He'd been an idiot.
"--You really think he'd just hand him over?"
"I don't know anything about Batman," the girl says. "But I'm not letting another brother die."
There's a sharp inhale, and neither side speaks.
"So that's it," the pale girl says. "You give up and immediately go get a replacement?"
"Sam..." the boy says warningly.
"Danny would want me to protect him," Jazz says. "So that's what I'm going to do. And you are free to leave."
"You're acting fucking crazy," Sam says. "And you're too deep in your grief to realize it. Danny would want none of this."
"Well then maybe it's a good thing he's not here," Jazz says, "Maybe I should be thanking you two instead."
The resulting silence is so sharp Damian hears only the sound of his own breaths.
"Fuck you," the girl spits, a door slamming a split second later. The boy doesn't say a word, crossing over to Damian.
"I'm going to keep looking, Jazz," he says, after a long moment. "I'm going to find him. Because he's alive."
Jazz doesn't respond.
"Listen, they found Robin's blood, right? They don't know who he is, so if we tell him to stop with the costume, lay low-"
"They'll finger prick all of Gotham if they have to. You know that. They can't get to him here, not with the portals and research destroyed. Even if they catch Mom and Dad, the ghosts will rip them to pieces if they ever step foot in the zone."
Jazz steps closer to Damian. "Here, Superman won't be able to hear his heartbeat."
"What happens when he wakes up? Wants to go home? He must have a family out there, he can't be Robin 24/7."
"You know I used to read to Danny?" Jazz says. Her voice is distant. "Every night before bed. He'd never heard a fairy tale before. He could read, of course, but he liked the way—" Jazz swallows. "He liked the way I did the voices. We were supposed to be in bed by 9 but when Mom would come to check on us we'd just pretend we were asleep. Danny was really good at it, but I could always tell when he was pretending."
A hand brushes through his hair again.
"You really are his twin, Damian."
Damian opens his eyes and sits up as the boy, a teenager his own age, takes a startled step back. Jazz, yes, the woman he'd 'rescued', smiles warmly at him.
He's in a canopied bed, surrounded by rich fabrics and what looks to be purple-bricked walls. There's a green tinted window to his right. Bookshelves with old looking tomes lines the walls and a suit of armor stands by the door. He notes the mace in its hands. With any luck, it won't be welded to the gloves.
"Danyal is dead," he says shortly. Jazz's smile turns sad.
"Yes," she takes his hand. "I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. He was so brave—,"
Damian yanks his hand away. "No, he's not newly dead, he's been dead. For years."
Jazz shakes her head, that same sad condescending smile on her face. "No, Danny didn't die. He escaped the League. He told me all about you. He," her voice wobbles, "he loved you very much."
Damian's blood churns. "You're lying."
"He lived, and he was a hero, like you. He helped people. And then he became a King," Jazz says. She continues to smile, even as tears start to trail down her face. "Which makes you a prince."
She sounds, to quote Sam, fucking crazy. And now that he can see the manic gleam in her eyes, she looks it too. Damian shoots an incredulous glance at the boy, but he refuses to make eye contact.
Jazz stands up and opens her arms out, gesturing to the room. "This was his home. And now it's yours."
Damian weighs his responses. Remembers Dick's lessons in diplomacy.
And still chooses the nuclear option: "If you know of the League then you know what it means to be the heir of Ra's Al Ghul. I will not be made into a prisoner and if you attempt to keep me here, you will be sorry."
The boy mouths "the league" to himself, questioningly, but Jazz doesn't so much as flinch.
"I know this is a long to take in," she says, voice dripping with sympathy. "But I promise, it will all make sense, and in time you'll come to adjust. Let's let Damian rest, Tucker."
The boy, Tucker, looks at him now with a troubled gaze, but when Jazz opens the door he reluctantly walks out. Jazz pauses in the doorway.
"Damian," she says, that same far off tone in her voice, her back to him. "Danny used to tell me about the League's code. Hunting down those that threatened its power without ceasing. Ensuring every target was dead. No mission left uncompleted. No failure tolerated."
Jazz looks back at him, a small serene smile on her face. "I'm going to avenge our brother Damian. I'm going to hunt down every last one of them. Without ceasing. Without failure. You have my word."
She cocks her head at him thoughtfully. "Danny loved macadamia nut muffins. I'll pick us up some on my way back. A welcome home present."
She strides out the door. Damian waits to hear a lock turn, but there is nothing but the sound of her fading footsteps. He waits until the noise has fully faded before he attempts to stand, glaring at his legs until they sluggishly begin to respond.
A squeaking noise erupts from the far wall and he watches in disbelief as the suit of armor creakily moves to stand in front of the door. Sufficiently positioned, it ceases all movement once more. However, now Damian can make out the two glowing red dots staring straight through the slits of its helm.
Damian's lip curls up in a wicked snarl that Jason calls feral as it becomes clear the guard is not going to attack but rather...guard. He heads for the window instead and stops short as he gets his first peek of the outside.
The window is not tinted green at all. Instead, for as far as he can see, there is an unnatural, electric green. Blobs of more of the green float and drift through the expanse, as if he is trapped in a lava lamp.
Here, Superman won't be able to hear his heartbeat.
"Where am I?" Damian asks, staring out into the void. This whole time he's been angry, and embarrassed, and annoyed. But for the first time since this ordeal began, he feels afraid.
"Where am I?"

sota's brave confession of love being that episode:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[worth noting here that in the dub the way richard says "WHAT-ever..." priceless.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[also worth noting that in the dub he says "you already said that" instead of "hah! what're you saying?!" which feels more like an inuyasha response to me. then again we'll never know since this is technically anime-only, and while i tend not to like a lot of inuyasha filler, if it's in the modern day i will eat it up. every. time.]
Tumblr media
inuyasha being stunned by the sheer amount of goods in a grocery store...gold. earlier in this episode he also seemed enamored by baked goods, and i wonder if he's ever really had anything resembling it? bread made its way to japan mid-16th century via portuguese traders, so it's likely he's never had anything like it and the smell must've been new to him - it would've been interesting if we'd seen him trying all these new foods!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i can never decide whether or not sunrise likes inukag bc they'll cut out canon scenes of them but then insert scenes like this in their filler eps...what game are ya'll playing? but flustered inuyasha is adorable so i can't complain this time.
Tumblr media
eavesdropping...
Tumblr media
i'm sorry WHERE is he getting these questions from i actually burst out laughing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
called out by an eight year old...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i don't care whether or not this is ooc because i laughed way too hard like he really got dragged from potential sleep to deal with this LMAO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is the cutest thing i've ever seen and it only gets better:
Tumblr media
shortly after: sota getting kicked out of his own house after chickening out for the tenth time this episode
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
smol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
flustered inukag my beloved...
anyway this episode is a dumb fun and i love it to an insane degree. the only part i would say is out of character (at least, more out of character than sunrise already does inuyasha) is when he literally makes this face at the thought of confessing to kagome:
Tumblr media
coming from the guy who was pretty open about his feelings in the manga and quite literally told kagome - thinking she was hearing him - that he likes seeing her smile and feels relieved when he's by her side, i don't see him getting this flustered - but the face he makes is priceless.

i understand that it sucked for lorelai when rory didn't make it to her graduation but damn some fans act like it was intentional and rory was being a selfish brat (as fandom is wont to do wrt rory lol) and it's just like she literally couldn't do anything, and it completely ignores that rory was so excited and proud of her mom and she got richard and emily there to see their daughter's accomplishment, like rory cared so much! she was not being selfish when she was certain she could make it to new york and back without a problem, like she didn't know she would get stuck on the bus ride from hell!!!
also if rory had been there, the moment between lorelai and her parents would not have been so poignant WHICH it's not rory's fault at all, but you notice that most of the sweetest moments between the are when rory is not there because lorelai doesn't have that "rory is the daughter they really always wanted" feeling hanging over her. like, little things like richard kindly letting lorelai escape when emily tries to set her up with that boring dude or emily taking care of lorelai while rory is at the dance, or in bon voyage and lorelai assures an uncertain emily their friday night dinners will continue and when richard points out that the party for rory is due to the amazing life lorelai created for the two of them in stars hollow like all these things happen without rory there. and like i said, it's not her fault, but i think generally the most emotionally vulnerable moments between lorelai and her parents, the ones that don't have them grating on each other are when they're on their own, so ultimately it WAS better for all three of them to share that moment simply as two parents seeing their daughter reach a milestone they otherwise never would've gotten to witness her do

RWRB Movie Review
Since some of y'all asked for my thoughts, here you go:
What I Liked about This Movie:
The casting - They absolutely fucking nailed it. From the main cast to even smaller characters like Ellen and Zahra and Amy and everyone else. Even the King. They all understood the assignment.
The POC nuances - There is a big difference between being queer and being poc and queer. I think the movie captured it better than the book did. Obviously, a lot of that had to do with Matthew. The little conversations about being a person of colour in the US and Alex and Henry constantly bantering (and educating each other) about their cultures and differences between them added so much value to their dynamic.
Subtle Creativity - I really liked how they translated the texts from the books into the movie. The symbolism of the water during the Lake House scene and all the queer historical references spread out throughout the movie. Important. Well done.
The music - I always pay close attention to the soundtrack in a movie and I think they killed it. Starting off with Joan Jett's Bad Reputation was such a good idea. I know everyone is soft about 'Can't Help Falling in Love' playing during the V&A scene, but personally I loved that they included 'If I Loved You' - it's such a classic and it's such a Henry song.
Alex and Henry - I'm going o be brutally honest here. If they had cast anyone other than Taylor and Nick, this movie would've flopped hard. Nick and Taylor carried this movie on their backs and they did SUCH a great job with it. I need to write a whole other post about how much I liked their acting and what I enjoyed the most.
What Could've Been Done Better
The storytelling - I didn't mind the changes we already knew (as much as I thought I would) - such as cutting out June and Alex's parents not being divorced. But I did find the overall pace and storytelling to be a little bit off. Some scenes felt disconnected and others felt rushed. Like, Henry saying 'I need to show you something' and taking Alec to the V&A felt very random to me considering the pace of that scene. I'm very curious about how all of this looked like to someone who hasn't read the books.
The gaps - I'm personally glad June wasn't in this movie because I feel like it would've made no sense. Honestly, a lot of her storyline is connected to Alec's struggle with understanding his sexuality and trauma from the divorce and both those plotlines were not part of the movie, so yeah. No June made a lot of sense. But some other edits didn't make sense to me. For instance, I really wish they had placed more emphasis on the emails and showed the intimate nature of those (they did a good job with the texts, but not with the emails). I honestly didn't understand why Richards was there. Phillip felt like another dead end. Nora was barely there too.
Alex's Bisexuality - There is this line in the books where Alex (in his list to Henry) says 'all the things I now understand about myself because of you'. I always felt that was important. I'm not saying that line should've been in the movie, but it should be a theme. Because in his speech when Alex was talking about the queer rights movements and queer history, I was like 'where is this all coming from??'. It would've been nice to see Alec's interest in these things (whether because of Henry or not) displayed more in the movie.
The lack of friendships - This honestly was my main disappointment. Because the lack of emphasis on Pez was a little shocking. Considering the movie had Henry pov, I really thought we'd see more of him. The same went for Nora (and the lack of June) who were barely there. I loved that the movie focused more on Alex and Henry, but I will always stress the importance of friendships for queer people - because we often feel safer with our friends than with anyone else. So, I wish they had done a better job. I personally feel much better choices could've been made about the secondary characters, such as removing Pez entirely and fleshing out Bea and Henry's relationship instead of giving Pez half a minute of screen time.
The women - this is a bit of a personal qualm and I'm still navigating this writing issue myself, but often in stories with mlm relationships, women are seen as these tiny side characters who are simply there to drive the plot. Sometimes women are barely there at all (I've noticed this in some BL dramas). This is not a rwrb issue, but a broader issue. But the thing is, in the books, Casey did a fantastic job in weaving in women and how just having them around makes a lot of difference (Alex and June are the primary examples of this). It's very interesting to see how depending on the identity of the creator, which themes get prioritized and which themes don't. For instance, we noticed Alex's race (or him being biracial) was more prominent in the movie than in the books, but Alec's relationship with the women in his life was more prominent in the books than in the movie. It's just interesting, I think. Very interesting.
RWRB in (my) essence: I read some say that the above issues could've been simply fixed if the movie was a mini-series. I personally don't think it should've been a mini-series though. Rwrb was always meant to be a movie.
But I do think, a larger conversation needs to be had about queer book-to-screen adaptations - where the budgets are smaller and restrictions are higher and there is bullshit like giving an R rating for a movie with barely any nudity and sex.
It wasn't perfect. It's a rom-com. A rom-com, in its essence, is flawed and talks about finding love in 90 minutes. It's supposed to feel rushed - like a whirlwind. I think rwrb movie did what it was supposed to do. It gave us a good rom-com.
BUT. I think we need more than that. We need cheesy romcoms like this. We need poignant queer movies with bigger budgets that will win Oscars. We need mini-series that have more time to explore broader themes. And we need TV shows that run for 14 seasons and have no plot but we want still want to watch anyway because it's gay people doing gay stuff.
Queer people need all of these options. We deserve the same diversity in content as straight people have. We, as Alex said, have the right to choose.
So, here is to more queer content, each wonderful and each flawed in its own way.
RWRB movie was not what I expected. But I loved it anyway. I watched it twice already and I will watch it again. Because, to put it simply, it made me so happy to have a queer rom-com that I can watch.
But we should and can and must have more of this.
So, I really hope every month will be gay as August 2023 is/was :)

Okay I gotta ask what's your opinions/thoughts on Helluva boss and Hazbin Hotel?
Short and frankly nicest answer I can think of: I'm glad it makes at least someone out there happy
Long and frankly honest answer: I don't like them. And no, it's not because I'm Christian or anything like that. I actually enjoyed the pilots for both, and the ideas themselves are very interesting! But, I mean... Just look up Vivziepop/HH/HB critical on here and see for yourself... it'll save me a lot of ranting...
Viv herself isn't the best person, which really sucks cause she was a big inspiration for me when I was younger and saw her old animations, and zoophobia comic. Its really one of the things made me want to become an artist, so seeing how she acts these days is really heartbreaking.
The pilots were both very good imo. I loved the characters in the Helluva Boss pilot, especially Moxxie and Stolas. It's sucks what they've been turned into. I loved Moxxie as this tired employee who disliked his boss and was constantly on the verge of having a panic attack and was just- so grumpy yet enjoyable to watch! Now, he's a whiney, pathetic wet-cat who wants validation from his boss and everyone around him, is afraid to get angry and now is absolutely hard to watch without cringing. I'm not a fan that he's a character associated with one of the GODS OF VOICE ACTING Richard Horvitz, Because he has voiced waaaay better characters...
And Stolas! What in the hell happened there? I would've been all in for him being an obstacle/minor antagonist in the series (like he was supposedly revealed to be in the pilot) but we once again got another pathetic depressed guy who just wants love.
I thought the show was supposed to be a spinoff from HH that followed a bunch of demons who assassinated humans for money? That premise would be absolutely hilarious if it was done right, and with the RIGHT AMOUNT OF ADULT HUMOR,that wouldn't make me physically flinch, I would've watched that show ASAP! If it the episodes were just about the hijinks they get up too, and it wasn't treated as it's own series once again, I would've enjoyed it.
But no. It's crude and not in a fun way, the jokes to emotional scenes, back to jokes, will give you such tonal whiplash it'll make your neck hurt, and it's constanly being watered down by its relationships.
And I'll just come out and say it: the animation and character designs are not as good as I think everyone makes em out to be. The animation is nothing to shake a stick at, but it isn't horrible. But the designs are just... Ouch

Ok speaking of changes GOT made… is there any changes you like? I struggle to find big moments, but there are small additions I love. Like Ned praying before he dies, Robb hitting the tree when he finds out, the chemistry that Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie have…. But there are very few structural changes I think improve the story.
hmmm so I can't lie there is a LOT I just don't remember anymore about the show, so wringing my mind a little to come up with something.....
I won't mention things that I think were adapted well (like Ned's execution) as those aren't adaptational changes. and I also won't mention things that I like the idea of (e.g. Jaime's dyslexia) but not the execution (they made out it was part of the longrunning 'stupidest Lannister' joke).
and like.... well I'm stuck already lmao?? I'm not even trying to shit on the show I just feel like it was a consistent exercise in either understating GRRM's work or butchering it entirely. so I can think of only a few things:
I can't find the link to where I talked about this at length but the scene in which Jaime and Ned duel in the streets of KL was a good one imo. I think it was more in character for Jaime to just recklessly fight Ned himself, and a neat parallel to what I suspect will happen between Ned, Arthur and Howland - in that when Ned is attacked from behind by one of Jaime's men in the midst of their fight, Jaime angrily ends the duel bc his man has essentially dishonoured it. I think Ned's fight with Arthur will end as it did in the show (with Howland stabbing Arthur from behind and Ned finishing the job, bc he needs to reach Lyanna), and this is like a parallel to show Jaime and Ned have the same principles, yet each have broken them in times of desperation. My personal theory is that this was a change GRRM recommended - the parallel seems notable to me, and not one that would've even occurred to D&D, esp. given they never gave any particular shit about Jaime's story. And this may sound spurious but I recall that GRRM remembers in an interview, saying the weather was different in the show version of the scene than in the books.... which makes me think he was maybe onset for this one, possibly because of the rewrite??
I'm v much in favour of ageing up the youngest characters. My ideal starting ages for the youngest characters in AGOT would've been Jon/Robb/Dany - 18, Joffrey/Sansa - 14, Arya - 12, Bran - 10. To me they all feel much too young for the roles they play in the story, and it occasionally kills my suspension of disbelief
I way prefer the book’s version of the Red Wedding but I do feel like Catelyn's single cry of despair works better than the book's manic laughter. maybe the laughter was a more vivid image for the books idk
I do actually like how we see Robb's grief onscreen it's very movingly played by Richard Madden. I also love Catelyn's expressions as Robb rides back from the Whispering Wood, like both these scenes are great reminders of their mother/son relationship in a setting where they aren't really allowed to be just that. and like just Michelle Fairley tbh I really like her work as Catelyn even though I don't like how the character was adapted more generally
Breaking the 'concept but not execution' rule just to say I think it was definitely a good idea to explore the High Sparrow as this weirdly charismatic figure so we can see how others might be taken in by him, even whilst we see the extremes of his faith. but that subplot was not executed well at all so fuck it
Yeah I agree that Jon and Ygritte having a slightly more charged romance also works. In the books Ygritte comes and goes quite quickly and I think there is something to be said for lending a bit more gravity to that relationship. I don't think they necessarily had to be the grand romance that the show makes them out to be but I didn't hate it
I might be forgetting other things that worked because some seasons I haven't seen since like 2015, but honestly it just doesn't work for me as an adaptation. things I liked in the show before reading the books feel completely naff in hindsight, knowing how they were supposed to play out, so..... eh

Gravity Falls Thoughts: Shermie, the Vietnam War, and Math
I remember waaay back when I was on a roll with my Youtube videos, one of them had me looking into the possibility of characters in Hazbin Hotel being involved in either world wars plus the Vietnam War.
Now, I kinda want to do the same with the Pines Bros, mostly with Shermie, and see if it's plausible
This is under the assumption that the baby that Caryn was holding was her grandchild and it's Shermie's kid, so that would make Shermie older. By how much? I'd say at least maybe 4~5 years.
Here's where the math comes in. (I'm also a history nerd)
Considering the Stans were in their senior year when Stan got kicked out, that would've made them 17~18 years old at the time. 40 years later, in 2012, they'd be 57~58. So, by this logic, the Stans (well, Ford, really) graduated in 1972. This was during a time when then president Richard Nixon started to, little by little, withdraw US soldiers from Vietnam, which I think started in 1971. It was hard looking for the date. Anyone with better knowledge, please help a girl out and correct me.
Side Note: The revelations of the Stans actual age does indeed help answer the question if Shermie was the baby or not. With that 18 year difference, that would've made Shermie 40 in 2012 if he was the baby. That is an impossible age of a grandfather of two twelve year olds.
So, about a year before Ford graduated. I'd imagine that at this point, the US military wasn't looking for new soldiers to be put into draft (if they would've accepted Ford).
Would Shermie have been a part of the war? There were two draft lotteries conducted that typically chooses men between ages 19~25 (men born between 1944 and 1950) in the Selective Service law. This happened in the December of 1969.
The Stans were born in 1954, so that would mean Shermie was born in either 1949 or 1950. Shermie would have been eligible for the war and may have even been drafted if his birthday was one of the lotteries pulled.
As for the birth of his kid (likely son), I'd say he was likely conceived when Shermie was withdrew from Vietnam in 1971, no doubt happy to see his wife again after so long (maybe he was drafted not long after getting married).
With this fact, I can't help but place parallels between Shermie and Filbrick. Filbrick, no doubt, was in WW2, which ended in 1945 (4~5 years before Shermie's birth). Given my own thoughts on the matter, of how Filbrick treated his sons due to his experience in war, Shermie probably had fears where he was scared that he was gonna be like his father and made great promises to prevent that for his son.

Is it bad that I'm still bitter about the Hazbin Hotel pilot VA cast being replaced nearly two years later? The loss of Edward Bosco and Michael Kovach hurt the worst as those two's vocal performances really brought Alastor and Angel Dust to life. 😞
In my opinion, HH without Ed and Mike would be like The Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. 🎸
Nah, I'm pretty sure many people still are, tbh especially when there's no reason for the voice actors to even be replaced. I'd get that they want actors who could sing, but why not have singers for the songs and regular VAs for the actual voice acting? They did that with Cherri Bomb in the Addict music video and have done that repeatedly in Helluva Boss.
Hell, sometimes the voice actors still get to sing as evident once again in Addict where Michael Kovach sung as Angel.
It also doesn't really help when you notice that the current voice actors are trying to copy the previous ones. It still makes you wonder what even was the point of replacing them.
Also, to go on a little rant, I think Ed has been done a bit dirty in both Hazbin and Helluva because if Norman Reedus was still around to voice Striker, then I doubt Ed would be voicing him today.
Ed was just really a backup VA for Striker. It would've been better if he had voiced Striker since the beginning. Hell, maybe Viv would've had the money to have Erica Lindbeck voice act Loona in Season 2.

If you knew it was going to be like this, you would've stayed single just a bit longer. Kept your peace, and even enjoyed the solitude of being probably the only single friend in your group.
'Give someone a chance.' They said. 'One date wouldn't hurt.' They said. 'You deserve to be happy.' As if you weren't happy the way you were. As if simply spending time with your best friends wasn't all you needed to feel loved and socially satisfied. Especially spending time with your two best friends (and a very new couple) Billy and Eddie. Thankfully, the fact that they've recently become more than friends didn't change anything in your friendship dynamic. Although it did crush any silent hopes you had of dating either of them. Those hopes would still kick out a painful little whimper whenever the boys were being their usual affectionate selves.
Lovely friends or not, nobody likes feeling like a third wheel.
So you took their advice, and forced yourself to entertain the advances of one Richard (called 'Rich') Cummings. You couldn't even enjoy the snort that usually accompanied hearing his last name, because he made sure you never came. When things eventually became physical, he was a huge disappointment. Carelessly thrusting away until he selfishly reached his climax, then slipping away into the night. It'd be better if he slept with an inanimate object. Then no one's feelings would be getting hurt. Maybe you wouldn't be in the situation you're in now.
"C'mon Rich, pick up the phone..." You paced the length of your bedroom, twirling the telephone cord around your finger. Out of the three months you've been together with him, he's spent the last one being distant. More than usual.
"Yeah?" His voice picked up on the other end of the line, gruff and a little annoyed by the sound of it.
"Are we still going tonight? We usually leave around this time, and I'm ready to go, but you haven't said anything about it..." He grunted and groaned through your words, making you fade out into a whisper. "Did- Did you forget?" At first, he was the one who insisted on celebrating an anniversary every month on the 16th. Taking you to a movie and then the diner to share your favorite milkshake.
Shuffling in the background of his house caught your attention, but he silenced it with a harsh hush. "Wha? Nah, I didn't forget baby. We're gonna skip the movie tonight. Straight to the diner." The noise came again, and for a second it sounded like another voice. Something that made Rich chuckle before he continued. "Yeah, I'll meet you at the diner in thirty minutes. Later babe."
"Wait, how am I-" click. The line went dead, and you were left sighing with an extra stress added on to your night. How am I supposed to get there? He always picked you up.
Tumblr media
Time and time again, your two besties came to your rescue.
"Fuck that guy." Billy grumbled, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. You reached forward, leaning over the column between the two front seats of his Camaro and squeezed his shoulder. Eddie, who was in the passenger seat, nodded in agreement.
"Honestly Sweetheart, when we said you should start dating, we didn't mean find the biggest asshole in town."
"Well I had to settle for second biggest asshole. You already took the first." Eddie doubled over with husky giggles at your remark. One hand raised off the steering wheel to flip you a ring-clad middle finger. "Sit on it, Y/n."
"I think Eddie's got that covered."
This got a gasp from Eddie, placing a hand on his chest. "When did I become the bottom??"
Ohhh?? The subject on who 'topped' or 'bottomed' in their relationship never really came up in conversation. The new nugget of information was dizzying to imagine. Mr.Rough-Em'-Up Billy Hargrove, panting and moaning on all fours. Oh yup, that would be a fun little session when you were back in your bed tonight.
"We're here." Billy pulled into the parking lot, looking away to hide his reddened cheeks. The diner was right ahead of you, and the large glass windows along the front allowed you to see who was inside. It was a slow night, which you loved. Felt more intimate. Then you scanned the area and realized... Rich wasn't there. You were already ten minutes late, he should've beaten you here.
Following your line of sight, the boys came to the same realization. "Do you want us to wait for you? In case you need a ride back?" You could tell Eddie was trying to keep a positive attitude, but his eyes gave him away. Glaring the entrance door as if he expected Rich to walk through it and spontaneously combust from the intensity of his stare.
"We'll be right here."
Tumblr media
The usual waitress gave you a sympathetic smile as she placed the second milkshake in front of you, and collected the empty glass from the first. Thirty minutes late, and still no sign of Rich. You couldn't see them in the dark of the parked Camaro in the lot, but you could feel their eyes on you. Most likely fuming.
"Oh shit, you're still here." The voice, despite it being one you've apparently waited so long to hear, didn't bring you any sense of comfort. Not with the crass way his words came out. "I thought you would've taken the hint and left."
Richard 'Town's Biggest Asshole' Cummings, has officially beaten Billy for top spot.
The girl on his arm only added to the stinging humiliation that bubbled behind your eyelids. It collected in the corners of your eyes, and you fought with everything you had not to let it escape. It's bad enough if Rich saw you cry, but this chick seeing it felt like such an intrusion. Who was he to expose your raw nerves like this?
"Fuck you, Richard." Was all you could manage, standing up from your seat and rummaging around in your purse for the wallet you were almost sure you put in there. Or maybe you didn't. Richard usually made a big deal about paying for your dates. Fuck.
He scoffed, pulling a roll of bills from the back pocket of his jeans. "Here. Take it as an apology."
"She won't need it."
Richard stumbled forward as someone pushed by him, purposely moving him aside with their broad and confident posture. Billy placed money down on the table and took your hand. His grip was soft and careful, in contrast to his aggressive stance. The free hand by his side was clenched into a fist. "Let's go, babydoll." He looked over his shoulder at the two of them, recognizing the girl from one of his past hookups. "Hope you know, she's all teeth, Rich. It's like stickin' your dick in a cheese grater. Have fun!"
Without hesitation, he shrugged his demin jacket off and draped it over your shoulders. A blanket of needed comfort. Like the arm he slung over your shoulder, guiding you out into the chilly night air.
Tumblr media
"Son of a bitch!" As expected, Billy's composure didn't hold up by the time you all made it back to your house. "I'll wring his neck for this." Out of respect for your things, he didn't punch the walls like he would've done at home. Instead he dug his nails into his palms. "I know where his house is. Let's pay him a visit."
"Boys..." You whined, curled into yourself on the couch.
Eddie was on board, already patting his pockets for keys. "We should take my van, though. People can spot your Camaro from a mile away."
"BOYS!!" They both turned to you, freezing in place. You didn't raise your voice often. "I- ...As much as I love the thought of Rich getting his ass kicked, I just- I really need you two right now..." There was no more fight left in you, and the tears refused to be held back any longer. They made themselves known with the heavy sob that passed your trembling lips. Taking you apart piece by piece.
All plans for rearranging Richard's face were forgotten in the wake of your meltdown. The two of them rushed to your side, sitting on either side of you and squishing you between them in a tight hold. If you weren't so distraught, you would've appreciated the warmth of two toned chests and arms caging you in. It's like they tried to overpower the tears with an abundance of cheek kisses. Fingers running through your hair, and large palms rubbing your back and shoulders. You couldn't tell who was doing what. You just let yourself sink into it. Closing your eyes as they whispered sweet nothings into your ears.
"You're too good for him, sweetheart."
"He didn't know what to do with a girl like you, anyway."
"You'll always have us. You know that, right?"
"Heh, I dunno if we should let you date again. Can't really trust your choices." Billy said, slightly muffled by the position of his face in the crook of your neck. "Maybe we should just keep you for ourselves. What do you think, Ed?"
Eddie peeked up from nuzzling at your collarbone. "I think you're right. 'Least she knows we'll treat her right. Don't you, princess?"
Truly, your mind was mush in their grasp. Your heart, well, they've been holding onto that for a long time. "I love you." Coming from a dreamy haze, you made sure to lock eyes with both of them. "You mean so much to me."
"We love you too, babydoll."
For once, after hearing those words from them, you felt at ease. Replacing the pressure of finding a date, with the satisfaction of having your two favorite boys wrapped around your finger. ♡

In the Thomas Universe, do you think the topic of the engines being sentient ever came up in ethical debates? And, if so, do you think there would've been some sort of movement that would've been against scrapping steam engines during the BR era?
Absolutely there are ethical debates about it. Have been since the moment the first engine spooked Richard Trevithick into falling comically backwards into a wastebasket.
What is the upshot of those debates? I hate to be a downer, but working animals (and animals for slaughter, for that matter) are also sentient and there have been a lot of ethicists objecting all the while but they were and are killed when Economics. I get that engines are also sapient but humans are too and that's never stopped other humans from treating them as disposably as possible on the slightest pretext of “not human like us, dahling.” Remember that locomotives were developed at the height and in the heart of the British Empire. 😐
So there are undoubtedly movements to treat engines humanely but that's not the same as governments legally acknowledging their rights.
I think the preservation movement would be a lot bigger and better-funded and would rescue more if vehicles could talk, but it would still simply be a gift bestowed on those who are important and 'deserving' enough. Call me a cynic but I don’t see things as a whole changing under capitalism.
If you wanted a more optimistic, shatter-reality-coz-reality-sucks, fightin' answer then you of course need to check out @joezworld's masterpost. (Actually you need to check it out even if you didn't.)

i think this is a good time to compile all my Caroline in the city opinions these are all the valid opinions on Caroline in the city:
I'm so glad Caroline and Richard broke up in the finale they really didn't work as a couple and that was so annoying to me. i feel like if we got season 5 they would've gotten back together which i hate so I'm glad we didn't
Malcolm Gets cannot for the life of him convincingly play a straight character like you can so clearly see he's gay he's a horrible actor really
i kind of hate all these characters honestly they're annoying
Annie and Richard should've ended up together actually. it would've made so much sense to me and I'd love to see their dynamic if they were dating that would he so much better than the sibling dynamic they ended up having
Caroline is such a bad protagonist like oh my god we get it you're a good person or whatever she's so boring i don't care about her
i don't know why anyone would think Del isn't straight when he so clearly is. he and Charlie are best bros obviously
Annie should've ended up in a long term relationship, it's not right how much she sleeps around it clearly isn't healthy there's something wrong with her
there's also something wrong with Charlie and he's such an annoying character to me why can't he just be normal
they went overboard with the Broadway references why do we need to talk about musicals in a sitcom. ugh.
Julia was the most valid character actually i wish she stayed longer I loved the way she treated Caroline and Richard that was fun. Joe and Randy are also personal favorites of mine
Del's dad seems like a wonderful parent to me
i don't like Salty I don't think we needed a cat in this show at all why would you put an animal in a tv show. unnecessary.
Richard Karinsky is NOT a cat
i hate this cast so much there should've been completely different actors in it like my beloved Jonathan Groff 😍 never mind that he was a child at that point he still should've been in it somehow maybe I'd like Richard if he played him
overall I hate this show i think friends is way better
these are all correct and right opinions

If I can't have you
I'm not immune to a scarier version of Mary.
The old horror movie plays as Mary sits on your couch, slowly eating his burger. They loved nights like these, lounging with you on the couch. Your apartment was a lot cleaner than theirs, and a lot more spacious. Not only that, but Mary found himself head over heels for you. While emotions had never been a particularly strong suit of his, they couldn't deny that they had finally fallen for you. What wasn't there to love? You were always so kind and understanding. You were always there to listen to him, even if others had turned away. Not only that, but the two of you got along perfectly. There was never any fights or disagreements. You two just worked. And while not all of your interests lined up, you both still had a lot in common.
Sitting on the couch next to you made their heart race as they thought about their feelings. Only recently did Mary finally decide to accept these feelings like an adult, but the whole “confession” aspect didn't come easy. They were sure you shared the same feelings, but actually verbally admitting they loved you more than a friend proved to be difficult.
“Oh! I forgot to tell you!” Your voice brings him out of his thoughts, the happy smile on your face making his heart melt. “Richard finally asked me out.”
And just like that, Mary's heart sank. They knew Richard, having met him a couple times whenever you brought him around the bar. Richard was cute, tall and a singer himself. But Mary knew Richard was better. Richard was the type of person you brought home to your parents, and he was the type of person to be immediately accepted into the family. Mary wasn't someone you could bring home, let alone be accepted by most families. It only made their heart break more.
“He did? Like, finally?” His tone carries a bit of resentment, but he tries to hide it. You happily nod, taking another bite of your own burger. Dammit, it stings. “So, you're going out with him, right?”
“Yeah. He wants to take me on a date tomorrow night.” Mary scans your face, seeing the joy in your eyes. A wave of nausea washes over. You were happy. You were happy Richard asked you out. You said yes to him.
“Huh...” They swallow thickly, trying to calm the rising jealousy that was making him sick. “I'm surprised you said yes, to be honest.”
“You know I've liked him for a while now. He's really sweet.” Sweet. Richard was sweet. Mary bites the inside of their bottom lip, putting too much pressure and feeling the skin break, the taste of iron flooding their senses.
“Yeah. Yeah, I know. Real sweet.” His tone is bitter as he seethes with jealousy. Come on, Mary, calm down. They had been so good with keeping their emotions in check. You brought them down. You made them feel better – less unhinged. But the thought of you with someone else...
Mary stands up as another bout of jealousy courses through. They have to leave before they act out. “I gotta get going. I gotta...” He snatches his jacket up, throwing it on. Your scent hits his nose, reminding him how perfect you looked wearing their jacket earlier that night.
“You okay?” You stare up at him with such innocence. You really didn't get it, did you? Their heart aches.
“Y-yeah, I'm fine. Just... got some shit I gotta do.” They give you a forced smile, swallowing down their emotions as head for the door. They're not even hungry anymore and the sight of their burger is making them even more sick. But still, they cast you once last glance. “I'll see you later.”
They hurry out of the apartment, closing the door behind them. The crisp night air greets him as he grits his teeth. Richard? Fucking Richard? What did that twink have that he didn't? Did you seriously like him more than you did them? Was Richard really that much better?
He takes a shaky breath, moving away from your apartment. Their mind races with thoughts. Had he known this was going to happen, he would've asked you out sooner. He would've confessed sooner.
“What the hell am I supposed do?” they grumble softly, running a hand through their messy hair. It wasn't fair. “That should've been me...”
They continue down the street, letting their emotions fester. Try as he might, he can't stop thinking about the news you just told him. With a smile on your face, too! Without a second thought, Mary turns, punching the wooden fence they were walking beside. The skin breaks on their knuckles, the wood splintering and embedding into their flesh. Fuck it. They could dig the splinters out later. Right now, it didn't matter. They couldn't control themselves.
And who was Richard to ask you out? He remembered that little bastard asking them if they had feelings for you. And Mary admitted to him, too! He told him that he liked you! But he still turned around and asked you out?
Mary felt that telltale snap somewhere deep inside their mind, where rationality goes out the window. They hadn't felt like this in a long time, and truth be told, they missed it. They hand moves to their waistband, fingers curling around the hunting knife they kept close.
“Tomorrow night, huh?” They couldn't let Richard take you on that date. Not after they had loved you for too long. So maybe it was time to pay Richard a little visit. He still remembered where he lived; a nice penthouse in downtown. You had taken Mary over for a little party before, one that he walked you home from. Not Richard. Mary wasn't as shitfaced and was able to carry you back to your apartment. But even through all of that, you still said yes to Richard.
Well... it's not like killing someone was something Mary's never done before.
