I have a Masters in Classics and I dare not touch anything about Greek mythology on tumblr because over half of it is people trying to make their headcanons canon, uncited nonsense, and straight-up making shit up, all of which ends up becoming my job to clear up for a lot of clearly passionate but misguided college kids. Remember kids, don't just believe it because it's on the internet and sounds cool. Always look for cited sources and check reputable sources to see if they lend any credence to the claim. This also extends to pinterest, twitter, and most other social media platforms.

If you will forgive my somewhat clunky metaphor, being a Jew on the Left often feels like I'm in abusive relationship.

I'm most certainly not going to go to the Right not only because of my morals, ethics, and values, but because whether it be overt or covert their end goal is the death and destruction of me, my people, our culture, and everything we hold believe in. It is like the Right is someone who just all red flags and your gut tells you if enter into a relationship with them the only way it ends is with them killing you. But the Left, well the Left seems cool and you get along and have similar view points so you think okay this could work. But it turns out the have some strange friends who have some real not okay thoughts and the Left will say "I'm not really with them you know", but they will still do stuff with and invite to stuff and won't end the friendship when those friends say some real disgusting things. Then as things progress you are not allowed to have things from a different perspective made from the nuances of your history and experiences. Then Left is telling you can't have certain thoughts, feelings, or be hurt by things. The Left is telling you what think is not what you think, what you heard you didn't, what you saw you didn't see, you just don't get it, you don't understand. Suddenly the rules that you both agreed to are being changed on you, and you are being told that you liar and are in fact the one with power and abusive. Not just that antisemitism is not antisemitism and according to Left you call everything antisemitism to delegitimize and downplay and shutdown. Suddenly the Left knows your history better then you and is explaining your beliefs, history, just everything to you as if you don't know it all already and know it better and more in depth. You are alone with no one and the Left is saying you are cheating with the Right when you would never and you just want to make it work. And it all is mess.

That is basically how I feel right now about the Left and how it feels to be a leftist and Jewish.

I mean it has always been somewhat difficult. There has always been a pretty large amount of antisemitism there. But right now it is on a whole kind of level.

I mean there is the old joke about hating Jews being the one thing that can bring the left and right together.

I think a fair amount of what I'm describing other marginalized people's have felt to a degree as well on the left. I do not want to discount those experiences.

I think overall the left needs to do better, I think it needs to stop being so White TM like white focused in its leftism, I think also that using the USA understanding of Race and Racial politics is dangerous and plain unhelpful when applied to global scale.

I think the Left needs to stop viewing the amount of color in a persons skin to what they must be because it ignores so much history and nuance. This doesn't mean we ignore White Privilege because we can not. This means we need to start having nuance and dialectical thinking going on. Such as understanding Conditional Whiteness and White Privilege are not the same.

The Left also needs to take Colorism more seriously as a whole and do more to combat and end it.

The Left needs to learn and understand just how much of the world we live in now is built on so many systemic abuses. And that the very foundation of it, no material that the foundation is made of is Systemic Ableism, Systemic Anti-Blackness, Systemic Antisemitism, and Systemic Misogyny with everything really branching off and out from there.

The Remus and Sirius height discourse has become so loaded. Today I saw a post claiming that viewing Sirius as taller than Remus means that one supports jkr? (What?)

Canonically, Sirius is taller than Remus. That's just a fact. And I understand that some people don't care about canon, and that's cool!! But even if you don't give a flying fig about canon, that does not make the view that Remus is taller than Sirius any more valid than the reverse, and you can't go around telling other people that they are wrong, or worse, bad people for not agreeing with a version of the character that exists in your head?

Look I get that it would be annoying to have people inject an "ahem actually..." on posts that are clearly based on headcanons. I get that. But that is the natural consequence of taking the names/tags of characters from popular fandoms and using them for your own OCs, and the fact that these fans jump to "they must be horrible people!" as opposed to "they might be confused about my relationship with canon" is... something.

As someone who is neurodivergent, I find that the fandom that claims to love diversity has very little tolerance for people who don't understand the unwritten rules about when canon is and isn't allowed to be used as a reference point. (Somehow, we still hate Snape because canon, but all other canon is garbage?) Sorry for the rant, I'm just tired and confused.

don't be sorry at all, i think this kind of thing needs to be talked about because at its worst, this rhetoric is an attempt at emotional manipulation and censorship. nobody is ever going to 100% agree even with the exact same words on a page - this is the entire literary criticism field, most of the time variation in readings are a good thing but this isn't even a "reading", because it has no bearing on the characters, they just are or aren't a certain height, so it becomes a tool for personal agendas - "if you think sirius was tall, you're a fascist". even though those two facts are not connected, because sirius' height is never anything more than a physical description of him. and it's glaringly obvious that the people who fixate on this aren't interested in sirius as a character, just as a vehicle for their own fantasies/validation.

this is the problem that comes from people trying to put dynamics & personalities that they want to see onto characters who don't fit those moulds. the height thing doesn't actually matter, it doesn't change anything in the narrative, but it summarises the attitude towards canon which for me summarises critical reading & reading comprehension as a whole within hp fandom. i don't think canon is perfect and i don't think it's sacred but i don't understand why you would engage with something that you have to twist out of recognition in order to enjoy it.

part of the fun of fandom, for me, is finding the limits and boundaries while maintaining recognition. at the very least, even if you change everything else, character has to be consistent. you have to recognise who you're working with otherwise what are you doing here? other authors are writing and have written exactly what you want, so why do you need this character with a history and motivations and a distinctive personality to be the ideal version of you/the partner you want (because lbr, that's it!). i'm not saying that people can't use their imaginations and bend things, i do it, and people can do that by bending characters out of recognition if they want. i don't get any enjoyment out of that or see the point in it but i'm not going to try and stop people. it's the flagrant dismissal of logic and evidence that i think is a more dangerous stance when applied more widely.

it's ALWAYS the people who want remus to be taller and sirius to be tiny who have 10 million personal reasons why they need it to be that way around despite it being clear that sirius is specifically tall, and remus is of such average and nondescript height that it's never mentioned. it's nobody else's responsibility to validate anyone's projections onto a fictional character, and your personal reasons for wanting a character to behave in a way that they wouldn't isn't anybody's responsibility. i don't think these kind of people see the irony in how they're trying to force their view on everyone else even though there's direct contradiction to it, yet are claiming that people who go with that feature from the text are violent fanaticists or something.

when you question why it makes such a difference to the "big strong remus and baby boi sirius" people, it comes down to "it's cuter" or "it allows me to simplify m/m relationships into tough and cute and use physical attributes as symbols rather than thinking complexly about personality traits and dynamics." the height thing is basically one step away from top/bottom discourse and just because someone identifies as queer or relates to a character doesn't make it unproblematic. if you need to see a character who represents your specific circumstances, find one or make an original one, imo. it's not an entire fandom's job to validate individuals and it's manipulative to suggest that someone else seeing a character according to the way that character is explicitly described is an act of hatred or violence or something.

apologies if this turned into a rant of its own - i don't CARE that sirius is tall but the attitude towards minor, basic facts is wild to me. it makes no difference to me but idk why you would take being taller than snape away from sirius bc he clearly enjoys being able to tower over him. if i did want to argue that sirius' height makes a difference in the text, i'd say that sirius is tall because padfoot is also a large creature and there seems to be some kind of reflection of the human in animagus forms, whereas the whole werewolf thing is something inflicted externally rather than something that comes from within the person so remus' human height isn't reflected by his lycanthropy. but that's a whole other question i would have to research more.

PERSONALITY + BACKGROUND

As a child Mitchell was extremely influenced by anime idols and cute idol groups alike. Going as far as performing his favorite songs and dances in school talent shows. However, his obsession with making the crowd feel "awe-inspired" he often used his UM to his advantage. This didn't do well with many of his teachers and other parents... so surprisingly enough Mitty had many detentions in their early years. This record left him in dim lights for group auditions. Mittys mindset got a bit skewed and began to think... I will just have to try harder to rule the crowd! Overtime their hope to inspire morphed into wanting the world to love him (through mostly any means).

Upon entering NRC Mitchell had begun seeking attention online and decided a "debut concert" was most necessary. After the entrance ceremony Mitty went back to the mirror chamber, set up his phone camera and began to perform one of his favorite routines! Thus started his online career! While he is not as popular as others, he does have a few hundred supporting him and in his mind that's the first step to his domination!

Personality wise, Mitty is pretty dense when it comes to anything besides his interests and doesn't take no for an answer. No literally it will go in one ear out the other. Despite this he does take everything surprisingly seriously, ok not rejection, but everything else! However compliments? He will grin from ear to ear, go red and just absoluetly adore you! He can be a bit clingy when he's like this, but he's just happy some one likes him. When it comes to friendship though... well he's not a terrible friend, but he does tend to only think of himself most of the time... at least he will buy you things to make it up to you;; Just don't ask him for emotional advice too much he really isn't good at it. Overall he's a bit of an annoying person, but his shy and bashful bursts at compliments may be something redeemable.

Academically he is average. He does amazing is music but that's about it, everything else is passing at least. He struggles with history most due to his disinterest in remembering about people who aren't his idols.

In his free time, Mitty practices dance and song covers from his favorite medias. Posting them as often as he records and of course running to Cater for help very often. If they're not doing that, he's grooming his feathers or sewing new outfits. Occasionally he will tour around campus and invade dorms to take photos in his newest creations as well as show them off.

ABILITIES

UM- Focus on me! "Let me show you who's the main star!" -This unique magic allows Mitchell to take on his peacock beast-form. When showing off his beautiful feathers they act as a hypnotizing charm; causing dizziness, crossed vision, and luring people into a trance like state. If used with full force, Mitchell can force the afflicted to follow his movements. -Movement can not be fast or the afflicted will snap out of the trance. -strength of effects depends on the amount of magic used in this UM. Less input and you can expect a simple charm and lull effect, but with heavy input the effects will increase. -Small to medium blot manifestation; long term use at low levels is usually fine, but after a few hours blot formation rate will increase.

Vil & Mitty : Mitty looks up to Vil and respect him so much! While he isnt into acting, Vils prowess and social media standing are impressive! Mitty is too busy fangirling and stuttering to speak to Vil casually. Vil doesn't seem to mind so long as it doesn't effect his work.

Cater & Mitty : Mitty joined the pop music club and immediately wanted to quit. It was quite contrary to what they expected. Cater and Kalim were quick to talk him into staying. Ever since, Cater has been a big help to Mitty in social media learning and Mitty may have taken to mimicking Caters speech online. Mitty says they're close friends, but Cater only see it as a casual friendship.

Riddle : Currently Mitty is trying to convince Riddle to form an idol duo. Riddle had been one of the first to "compliment" one of his dances, saying "Your dancing nice, however you are trespassing on Heartslaybl property!". Ever since, whenever Mitty visits Cater he doesn't hesitate to try and recruit the house warden. While Riddle does not hate him, he is often dumbfounded by Mittys inability to "read the atmosphere". It is not currently known why Mitty is obsessed beyond the nice comment.

Rangers Apprentice Fantasy Headcanons if John Flanagan Actually Committed to the Bit

Ranger's oakleaf pendants are enchanted by the commander to be a tiny beacon of warmth whenever an apprentice/mentor duo are nearby to each other, and this persists even after the apprenticeship ends. This makes the game of Gilan trying to sneak up on Halt way funnier because the pendant warming is a dead giveaway, and makes Halt giving up his oakleaf to go find Will a much bigger deal because now there's no way to tell if he's getting "warmer" to finding him. When Horace becomes known as the oakleaf knight, his shield is enchanted too because he's basically an honorary brother to will let's be real.

The rule of "The cloak isn't magic, training is everything, trust the cloak" still applies, because they're not perfectly illusory, but they do shift color and pattern throughout the year to match the changing seasons.

Where do the wargals go after Morgarath is killed??? Do they all just die spontaneously? Run off a cliff like lemmings?? Get mass executed by the araluens? No! They've got a tragic history of being semi-intelligent war-slaves. Let me see a few refugee ones make their way to Malcom's camp along with the rest of the "freaks" he takes in, and be given a home, and have Will reconcile his (very valid and traumatic) fears of dealing with them before with the fact that they had no control over the situation back then.

On that note just let Malcom be an honest to the gods sorcerer, he deserves it.

When they're chasing the Kalkara in book 1, they pass through this plain with singing flutes. What's the deal with that?? I think this is a religious practice for a god. We know the Skandians practice a polythestic religion but only get superficial information. I want to know more about the rest of the world and I want Details Please and Thank You. A singing shrine for local spirits is such a cool worldbuilding concept that is left totally unexplored.

The ranger horses can still be a special breed that Halt stole from the Arridi, but they're semi-intelligent mythical creatures in their own right with a history full of lore. Give them a better reason for their mannerisms beyond just "good training". Every once and a while Tug pulls out some whacky power and Will's like "HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING THAT ONE." This is already canon.

It's been a while since I read books 5 and 6 where Alyss got kindapped that one time, but I vaguely remember there was this one hypnotizing jewel. She takes that idea and brings it back to the diplomats to research, refine, reproduce, and use. They start wearing them as necklaces to subconsciously influence the people they're talking to to agree with them on diplomatic missions. Lady Pauline strikes me as the type of person to not shy away from a little harmless mind control. After all she married Halt "forging a king's seal is totally ok" O'Carrick so the moral compass is. A bit wobbly.

Jenny's cooking position is also a secret potioneering apprenticeship and she send Gilan off with tons of healing potions because she worries about him coming home safe. After hearing about what happens to Will in Skandia, and what happens to Halt in Halt's Peril, she makes it her life's mission to develop antidotes to warmweed and other addictive/poisonous substances so that no one has to suffer those withdrawl effects and symptoms again.

Morgarath had a fancy enchanted necromancer sword that he used in the battle, and when Horace uses the double knife defense to block and kill him, the power translates to those two daggers. He doesn't use them ever, but carries them with him in case he's ever really. REALLY. desperate and also because he doesn't trust anyone else to keep them. Eventually, he gives one to Evelyn/Cassandra so she can keep herself safe in case of emergency and then they have cute evil matching couple knives <3

ok I slandered Daeron in the tags to that best singers poll and I FEEL BAD so go on convince me that I should like him ;)

Heh, saying you don't like a character is hardly slander! But I will take any opportunity to defend the B-Side of First Age Disappearing and Despairing Minstrels.

First, some reasons Daeron is cool:

He's the greatest minstrel of the Elf clan (the Teleri) specifically known for singing. He's one of the only instances of an Elf who hasn't seen the light of Aman being the best at anything.

Silm says that "Under ... the teaching of Melian [the Sindar] became the fairest and the most wise and skillful of all the Elves of Middle-earth," and Daeron is singled-out as one of the greatest among the greatest -- and not only for his music! He is also a loremaster and invented the Cirth. Everyone compares him to Maglor but I actually think there's a bit of a Sindarin Feanor vibe to Daeron. In later ages, I like to think many great Sindarin creations would get attributed to Daeron whether they're his or not (there are other versions of the history of Cirth where Tolkien seems to be getting at this), like the Noldor would attribute their great inventions to Feanor.

Daeron's name, in later etymologies, is actually related to the word 'great'.

His name, in earlier etymologies, means 'shadow of trees' which is so mysterious and poetic.

Daeron's teacher and the Queen he sang for, was there for the Ainulindale itself (thanks @an-eldritch-peredhel for the point!). Melian is also said to have been most skilled of all the Ainur in "songs of enchantment" and the Valar would stop their work to hear her singing at the Mingling. That's who taught Daeron!

The Sindar were a largely an oral culture, but Daeron -- during the peaceful years of Thingol and Melian's rule in Beleriand -- invented an alphabet. Even in times of bliss, he cared about the preservation of memory and knowledge. I love that for him. This gorgeous quote ends the paragraph about his invention of the Cirth:

But of bliss and glad life there is little to be said, before it ends; as works fair and wonderful, while still they endure for eyes to see, are their own record, and only when they are in peril or broken for ever do they pass into song.

Like Maglor, he has the same tragic arc of messing up, repenting, and self-exiling. Unfortunately, he gets such cursory treatment in the published Silm that this doesn't really come through (in particular the repentance part).

I could say more, but now we've come to repentance, let's address the real elephant in the room: betraying Luthien. This is going under a cut.

I tend to see Daeron getting dismissed (or loathed) based on some variation of "he was a jealous unrequited stalker who betrays Luthien". And there's some truth to that (definitely the betrayal part), but I think a lot of assumptions are made about him based on certain unrequited lover tropes (Maeglin), or perhaps negative real life experiences, that I don't think really apply to Daeron.

Here's why.

He was Luthien's close friend.

Let's start with what we can squeeze out about their relationship from the Silm:

Then Luthien, perceiving that no help would come from any other on earth, resolved to fly from Doriath and come herself to [Beren]; but she sought the aid of Daeron, and he betrayed her purpose to the King.

[Daeron] it was that made music for the dance and song of Luthien, before Beren came to Doriath; and he had loved her, and set all his thought of her in his music.

Ignoring for a second that he betrayed her (that's coming up), Daeron spent a lot of time with Luthien (making music for her) and he was the person she trusted enough to ask for help in going after Beren. They may not have loved each other in the same way, but there was reciprocal affection there.

(In the Tale of Tinuviel he's her brother, so at its origins the relationship is so close that they are siblings.)

The Lay of Leithian makes their friendship much more apparent, as the bits below will show.

2. His betrayals of Luthien are complex.

In the Silm, Daeron twice betrays Luthien.

First, he tells Thingol she's been hanging out with Beren:

But Daeron the minstrel also loved Luthien, and he espied her meetings with Beren, and betrayed them to Thingol.

Then, he tells Thingol that she's planning to go after him (quoted above).

The first one, I admit, comes off kinda jealous and petty. But think about his situation. His best friend (who he may be in love with - but note that in love is never the phrasing) has just started secretly hanging out with this mortal who stumbled out of the bushes. This is not safe! This is extremely unexpected and stressful! He is upset!

He is also sworn to serve his king. He kind of has to tell Thingol once he knows this about his daughter. Yes, perhaps he had no business stalking around to see what she was up to, but he was worried. Probably would have been better to just talk to her (we don't know that he didn't, actually), but he's certainly not the only male character in Luthien's story who doesn't ask her what she thinks before taking action (this includes Beren).

As for the second betrayal, again he's sworn to serve his king and she puts him in an awkward position when she reveals her plans to go after Beren. But more importantly, he's worried for her safety! From his perspective, she's lost her mind. And how was he to know Thingol's reaction would be to lock her in a treehouse?

The way this all plays out in Lay of Leithian makes all these implied complexities more apparent:

Luthien starts having secret forest meetups with Beren and Daeron sees them together. He gets very upset and lays a curse of silence on Doriath (sidenote: kinda awesome that he has this power??).

Thingol summons Daeron to ask him what is going on with the silence. Daeron replies in riddling terms, and Thingol asks him to clarify.

But Dairon looked on Luthien and would he had not spoken then, and no more would he speak that day, though Thingol's face with wrath was grey.

So even midway through his "betrayal" (questioning by Thingol), Daeron seems to repent. It's Luthien herself who steps up and reveals what's happening.

Thingol is mad, he sends everyone off except Daeron, whom he asks to watch Luthien, which he "heavyhearted did" (Daeron is really not a position to say no here).

The watching proves unnecessary because Luthien brings Beren to Menegroth herself. Beren makes his speech about wanting to marry her.

Here Daeron behaves poorly. He calls for Beren's death, which is mean (but it is also a pretty badass moment and underlies my slightly-unstable Daeron headcanons) -- but! Tolkien actually struck these lines out and in the published Silm it's Thingol who wants Beren dead. Christopher Tolkien says of this cut: "It may be that my father wished to represent Dairon as less unequivocally hostile to Beren, and also ashamed of his words to Thingol."

Next time Daeron shows up Luthien is going to him for consolation and help (as in the Silm):

'O Dairon, Dairon, my tears,' she cried, 'now pity for our old day's sake!'

She asks him to play music for her, which he does, and she feels better.

Addressing him as "my friend" she asks for his help "if he would not for love of her / go by her side a wanderer" seeking for Beren.

Daeron swears to protect her -- but what he really means is he's going to tell her dad that she's lost her goddamn mind.

But straightway Dairon sought the king and told him his daughter's pondering, and how her madness might her lead to ruin, unless the king gave heed.

When Thingol decides the appropriate response here is to lock her up, Daeron feels pretty bad about it, and often visits Hirilorn.

There Dairon grieving often stood in sorrow for the captive of the wood [...] Luthien would from her window stare and see him far under piping there, and she forgave his betraying word for the music and the grief she heard, and only Dairon would she let across her threshold foot to set.

Which brings me to:

3. Daeron repents and Luthien forgives him.

See that passage above? She forgives him! And he's the only person she lets visit her!

Next up, Luthien learns that Beren is imprisoned in Tol-in-Gaurhoth and she gathers all the various implements she needs to make her big escape.

Then Dairon she called: 'I prithee, friend, climb up and talk to Luthien!' And sitting as her window then, she said: 'My Dairon...

And she asks him to craft her a loom (which she will use to weave her hair into the cloak of darkness she uses to escape, but she doesn't say this). Daeron shows some concern over what her plans are with this and she answers ominously and evasively.

Then Dairon wondered, but he spake no word to Thingol, though his heart feared the dark purpose of her art.

He doesn't tell! He knows she's up to something but this time he doesn't tell. He's learned. (Note that because Lúthien doesn't reveal exactly what she's doing, he doesn't necessarily have the same duty to tell Thingol.)

Then as we know, Luthien escapes and goes missing. The part of the Lay covering the events in Doriath while Luthien and Beren complete their quest weren't written, so all we know of Daeron's next actions come from what's in the Silm:

And it is told that in that time Daeron the minstrel of Thingol strayed from the land, and was seen no more. [...] But seeking for Luthien in despair he wandered upon strange paths, and passing over the mountains he came into the East of Middle-earth, where for many ages he made lament beside dark waters for Luthien, daughter of Thingol, most beautiful of all living things.

Also in the outlines of the unwritten Leithian Cantos:

Sorrow in Doriath at the flight of Luthien. [...] A mighty hunt is made throughout the realm, but many of the folk stayed north and west and south of Doriath beyond the magic of Melian and were lost. Dairon became separated from his comrades and wandered away into the East of the world, where some say he pipes yet seeking Luthien in vain. [...] Thingol is wroth [at Celegorm etc.] - and is moved to think better of Beren, while yet blaming [him] for the woes that followed his coming to Doriath, and most for the loss of Dairon.

Guh! This is just so tragic to me?? He just... disappears! In despair! How is that not sad?? How is it he made two minor bad judgement calls and this is his fate? Look, Maglor fully deserved his self-exile in pain and regret. I just don't see how Daeron did. But he loved Luthien so much that his despair over betraying and losing her was it for him. Many ages of lamenting. And it was a tragedy for Doriath, too, who lost one of the greatest minds the Sindar ever had.

I get so emotional defending this guy. I'm sorry this is so long.

Bastardphobia in GRRM's world.

As you pointed out we see several examples of highborn bastards being treated well and portrayed favourably but it came to my attention that the citation for bastards who are usurpers, is the Blackfyre rebellions that have happened in Westeros.

Before I go into this I'll get the obvious out of the way :

The Dance of the Dragons was inevitable, whether or not Rhaenyra had bastards, Viserys fucked things up for everyone.

Now, the Blackfyre rebellions happened because Aegon the Unworthy legitimized Daemon Blackfyre, who was seen as more Targaryen than Daeron The Good. I won't pretend to be super well-versed about this but Daemon also had all the symbols of legitimacy, which begged the question of who had a right to the throne. This also sparked the Ninepenny Kings rebellion.

This ultimately happened because someone messed around with laws and gave zero fucks about the consequences (this looks familiar)

If these rebellions hadn't happened, this might just be a thing at the very back of people's minds.

Now while there was an anti bastard, this was about people being worried about inherentance,as you stated but as you've pointed out we see bastards who are just minding their own business and doing well for themselves in a world that's generally fucked up.

There's also a class element to this cause where do they fit in, they're outliers.

Let's discuss everyone's favourite bastards Jon Snow. Catelyn who knows her history and has given birth to sons that favour her looks wise, fears what may happen should Jon wants more and the Northern Lords want someone who looks like a Stark.

Yeah, I basically think GRRM is using the usurper bastard trope as a means to introduce the premise for dramatic civil wars, but royal bastards are also more high-stakes than the bastards of some random small-time lord. In any case, as long as (like you said), no one messes around with the established laws, the line of succession doesn't get as muddy and the causes for violent conflict remain few. There were bastards on Dragonstone for generations (where the dragonseeds came from) and nothing happened until Viserys I decided to cover his eyes and ears and live in delulu land.

Unfortunately, we're going to have to disagree about Nettles. Obviously I have no way of reading GRRM's mind about this, but I do think it makes more sense thematically for Nettles to have some dragon blood in her from her ancestors. I don't think regular people should be able to ride dragons, as cool as it would be, because it seems to me that within this universe, that kind of ability is only accessible to someone if they've made some sort of pact with the devil. Regular people couldn't have transgressive powers that go against nature because they haven't (yet) transgressed (later part of this post).

Chapter 49 of Harrow the Ninth

So this seems to be a continuation from when Ortus was trying to get Abigail to summon Nonius based on the fact that his sword was once briefly in Nonius's proximity nine generations ago? And also, this seems to be the part of the Noniad where Nonius faces down the Lyctor (= Gideon the First, apparently)

I'm not sure what the role of the recitation of the poetry is here. It can't have any necromancy involved, because Ortus starts out with it, and Harrow doesn't know what she's doing it for when she continues it. Is Abigail actually drawing on the words of the Noniad the way she would on a physical object like the sword? The Noniad definitely never coexisted with Nonius, if something that's merely written about someone thousands of years after their death can be used to summon their ghost, this seems like it would have amazing implications for this universe, and especially for someone like Abigail, who studies history

I would really like to hear this chapter from Nonius's perspective. Like, he was a skilled swordsman for sure, and fought a Lyctor once, but I think it's clear he never really thought he was all that, and after thousands of years of being dead he's summoned to a place he's never been by people he's never met to fight in the service of a Reverend Daughter he doesn't know and he's now bound by the rules of this probably at least partially fictionalized epic poem that someone from the far future wrote about him and is restricted to speaking in meter, and his enemy is calling him "wizard filth" and trying to fight with weapons he's only seen used to hunt animals and this is probably such a surreal experience for him

They've been running around in the same body for the entire book, and now, as soon as they get separated Gideon is like "where is Harrow, I bet Harrow would do something smart and cool here" every five minutes, and Harrow is like "where is Gideon, I bet Gideon would do something smart and cool here" on her end also

And you know, this fight was pretty cool, and I think it was like half the length of some of the other fights that weren't

You know, I'm not entirely sure why Ortus disliked Protesilaus in the first place, but I'm glad he doesn't seem to anymore

Another possibility, I guess? Ortus was just so obsessed with Nonius that it created some kind of link?

You know, I thought this was just going to turn out to be "A. Wake" with some odd kerning, but I have read the first part of the next chapter, so I know now that it's nothing remotely so normal as that

I feel like we're making up new rules based on how much narrative tension they create rather than whether or not they actually make sense with the current worldbuilding. All of the dead ghosts in this bubble will have their souls permanently destroyed if they die in it, and the same thing applies to Harrow, who is an actual living person attached to an actual living body. But somehow, this rule doesn't apply to Wake, who is a dead ghost who's merely haunting a dead body. She is a revenant, but so are the resurrection beasts, and it's been repeatedly established and reestablished that they can be 100% totally killed completely gone in the River without anyone having to touch the physical body they're inhabiting

I love how they all go off to help Gideon the First fight the resurrection beast. That's another perspective I'd like to see: you're fighting a resurrection beast all by yourself because all of your fellow Lyctors have abandoned you, and then suddenly the long-dead ghost of a cavalier you dueled absolute yonks ago shows up to fight alongside you and actually scares away the resurrection beast

Because now that she remembers Gideon, she'll continue absorbing her soul via the normal Lyctoral process, I guess?

This book ends with Harrow leaving her body and going out into the River, right? That's got to be how it ends, even though she told Magnus and Abigail she would go back, there's no way she actually does that, right? And I don't think she actually precisely said that she would go back, she just sort of implied it. And based on tumblr spoilers, Gideon gets resurrected. So then what happens to Harrow's body? Is this where Nona comes into it? The next book is called Nona the Ninth and we're almost at the end of this one and Nona has still not been mentioned once yet

How to call your legislator or write a letter to the newspaper.

Caveat is that I am based in the US and would assume that these rules more or less apply to other countries but what the hell do I know? Please feel free to repost with tips for your home country, sorry to be so United States about it.

The most recent chapter of my Captain America fanfiction (sorry, did you think I was on tumblr because I am cool?)(because yes! I am!) is a performance arts piece where readers are invited to become a part of the story by taking a political action on the central issue that the characters are working on - which is legislation against gender affirming care.

The rules:

You are 100% welcome to plagiarize anything I’ve written in this fic in your opinion piece.

If you do write a letter to the editor, or call an elected, please leave a comment saying so!

How to contact your US Elected Officials:

You can find your state and federal electeds via this tool: https://openstates.org/find_your_legislator.  You can also just search your zip code and [state and federal congress] [school board] etc.

Your opinion is much more influential with state and local electeds - definitely reach out! You do not have to be fancy. Just say your general opinion.

Generally speaking, when you call or email an elected (calling is always, always better, but emailing is always, always better than nothing), they just check a box of like “yay or nay” on an issue. They don’t have a special tracking tool for how many amazing facts you have memorized or how articulate you sound. They won’t debate you. You share your opinion, they ask your zip code, and that’s it.

Pro tip: Put your electeds' office phone numbers in your address book and call after business hours so you get a voicemail. Call drunk. Whatever. Back when I had a ton of health issues and bad health insurance, I used to call Congress every time I was in a waiting room to complain about how much we need health care reform (2-3 times a week).

Just remember, you are likely to get a 20 year old college intern or staffer, so be nice. They are at the bottom of the food chain and possibly not even getting paid money.

Why should I write a letter to the editor?:

The Opinion pages are the most read part of any paper. Politicians have staff that read them every day. Activists I know have gotten personal phone calls from high-level politicians who were either pissed or happy about an opinion piece.

How do I get it published?:

Just search [your local paper or the town where you live] and [publish a letter to the editor] it should pop up. Papers make it pretty easy for you to find the info. Usually there is a 200-word limit for an LTE and a 500-word limit for an op-ed. Op-eds are like a fancy LTE: they are harder to get placed, and you usually need some kind of expertise or hook. Happy to answer questions.

How to write a letter to the editor:

Here is a Planned Parenthood overview on how to write an LTE, it’s looking at abortion rights and specific to the Southwest, but it’s pretty decent. I put my own formula below with purple italics examples from the op-ed in my fic —you can re-order these, mix and match, whatever:

Paragraph 1: Current events + context of why this matters now (local context is good, but national is okay):

This year has seen an alarming array of troubling new laws that aim to make it a crime for doctors to act ethically and in accordance with widely accepted standards of medical care. I would be opposed to any law that comes between a patient and their doctor. But these laws are especially distressing to me, as they target some of our nation's most vulnerable children.

Paragraph 2: Identify yourself, why you care, and why people should listen to you:

Steve says: As a person who knows a little bit about history, I invite you to please join me on the right side of it. Obviously Captain America is famous enough he doesn't need to name his qualifications. You don’t have to have anything fancy, just acknowledge one role you play as a human member of a community. You don’t have to come out as transgender in the newspaper (unless you want to!). Everyone is a million things you can identify as that give you moral standing. If you have a personal story, feel free to share it. You could say: As a parent, I am horrified by the bullying behavior of lawmakers, and would never want to see a law like this come between my child and the healthcare they need. Or: As a student, I want to see all my classmates treated equally. It makes me feel unsafe when I hear about teachers misgendering their students.

Paragraph 3: Make your argument with Value, Vision, Problem, Solution

Paragraph 1 and 2 were about providing context for why people should listen to your argument. Now in Paragraph 3, you make the argument. A great way to frame your arguments are Value, Vision, Problem, Solution. This is a very old and common messaging tool and nothing I made up. Steve’s op-ed in my fic includes these, though slightly out of order. Leading with a value that you feel might have more universal appeal is a great way to reach people who may disagree with you. If you are stressed about how to articulate your argument in any situation, this is a great four-sentence formula to use to organize your thoughts. One thing I like about it is it leads with Value—which you don’t need any special expertise to have. You don’t have to memorize 900 perfect facts. You just have to be against child abuse.

Value: a somewhat universally held value that applies to this situation:

No child should have to live in fear of discrimination. Child abuse is bad. Children should be protected. Everyone deserves a safe place to live.

Vision: the big thing you want to happen—invite people to see your positive vision:

Our nation’s children should not have to witness grown adults drumming up hysteria over nonexistent problems because they aren't tolerant of the beautiful diversity of humanity. (Typically framed more positively than the above. For example: --Transgender children should have access to healthcare/bathrooms/proper pronouns. --I want to see a country where all children are free to play and be themselves. --Transphobic lawmakers should be launched into the sun / etc. )

Problem:

Denying trans youth gender-affirming care is an affront to science and medical ethics. These abhorrent actions cause transgender youth to endure untreated pain, and some will die because of these policies. The very existence of these laws harms all transgender children in our nation, because the laws perpetuate discrimination and give undue affirmation to biased, unethical science driven by an agenda of hate. (This is a great place to add facts or research to back up the problem. There are many powerful statistics showing the disproportionate emotional burden transgender people carry as well as the enormous medically proven success of gender-affirming care, as well as the fact that they violate the US constitution.)

Solution:

I hope you'll join me in thinking about the ways you can join the fight for transgender rights, and the rights and dignity of all LGBTQ people. Together we can protect our transgender youth, and make this moment not a story of when our nation made a grave error that harmed a generation of transgender children, but a time when we chose to stand up and change the course of history for the better. (Here is a great place to list specific bills you support or detest, or call out specific politicians who are either doing good or bad work in this arena. Whenever you can, try and namedrop a politician or a bill name/number—they are definitely tracking those. But you don’t have to!).

That's it! An LTE can be 3 paragraphs, and in general, I recommend the Value, Vision, Problem, Solution framework as one to keep in the back of your mind to organize your points in any context.

What are…Mers? Part 1

(Old art is old but i love it so here you go lol) --- Mers are one of the 5 types of beings in the Kidnapped universe…And they are exactly what you think they are.

Mers=Mermaids, mermen, merpeople. Mers is the term used most often though because it's gender neutral and quicker in general.

(NOTE TO BE AWARE OF: Not every single mer we see in series is good…Mers as a species are neutral until proven good or bad. Just because alot of mers we see are good DOES NOT MEAN every single mer is a good person...)

If you somehow are not aware as to what a mermaid is (first how'd you get this far into my stuff without knowing lololol) BUT; a mermaid is half human, half fish.

They're thought of as mythical beings, magical and powerful…And in the Kidnapped universe, they are all of those things.

Magical and powerful on average and humans/landies think mers are…A myth, something that doesn't exist. However…They absolutely do in this world…And they're alllllllll over the place…I'm talking worldwide, i'm talkin there's several billion of em, like…They absolutely exist lololol… --- So basic biology stuff:

Mers have several forms, similar to shadowdemons. - Their basic merform (tail, their watery appearance basically) - "Human" forms (Trading their tails for legs via magic/being out of water basically lol) - And usually, most mers have a powerform (a form made from their magic type…As an example, a water mer can transform parts of themselves into water or they can fully become water or ice. NOTE THO, NOT EVERY MER HAS A POWER FORM. Most do tho) More basic biology things, mers have: -Brighter colored hair colors, usually 'unnatural' bright colors like blues, greens, purples, ect. These appear alot brighter and oddly never fade like dyed hair would but most humans assume these people must have really amazing hair stylists or something lol -Oddly neon/rainbow colored eyes (unnatural shades of green, blue, purples, pinks, ect) -Sharp pointed fingers (this was a hunting adaptation and is still helpful but less so in modern day) -Natural swimming abilities/ability to breath underwater -Mers all have levitation/telekinesis/ability to move stuff with magic as a default power. EVERY MER HAS THIS POWER... Back in olden days, mers used to have a siren call, used as a mating call. Mers WOULD actually sing potential mates/people to death but usually this wasn't on purpose. (alot of mers didn't realize humans/landies cannot breath underwater and thus would drown, whoopsies) Mers as such could sing and attract the gender they were aiming for and it would hypnotize the person pretty much...Didn't matter the genre of music either, if the mer liked screamo music or whatever, that absolutely could hypnotize a potential mate lol In modern day, this has kind of evolved out but mers usually on average are naturally amazing singers. This is mer history though so yep... --- Magic shiz? Yeah, let's do that lol. So an important note to begin with: A mers magic comes from a core in their heart and a mer CANNOT live without magic (vital bit of their body and dna system) MAGIC CAN BE STOLEN WITH CERTAIN METHODS AND IT IS 100% FATAL TO THE MER... Ok, we got that rule? Ok, COOL. Now then... Suffice to say mer magic is vital to them, their culture, ways of life and their lives themselves... Mer magic runs on energy thus a mer cannot use it if they are sleep deprived, starving or greatly injured. The body will shut off the magic to save energy for keeping them conscious and alive. As an add on, mers typically have different power levels then each other. It varys and depends on the mer type, how much they practice their magic, if their klutzy or skilled. It greatly varys from mer to mer. This applies to Kristy as well. If she's hurt or exhausted or starving, that magic WILL NOT WORK. Her magic can be stolen via the amulet being taken but since she's human and her magic comes from the amulet, she's not in danger of death in the same way a mer is...Kristy just won't have magic at that point, she'll just be her normal human self. Mers just die without magic after a period of time. Powerful mers die faster without magic while weaker mers have a bit longer until they croak... Examps: Strong mer- OH Weaker powered mer- Nucleo We'll get more into this in more entry points buttttttt here are the mer types (mixed power mers not included here but for ref, mers are typically born with one type of magic HOWEVER you can be born with 2 types of magic, genetics depending...This is more rare though...)

Mer types:

Mers that have the equipment(usually females but not always, AFAB people too) are the ones that get pregnant and give birth. It usually takes a mer about a year or so to form and to be born. The magic aspect is what takes those extra few months...Takes more time to form...Mers are mammals also btw. Mers start life as babies and grow from that point. (Baby-->Child-->Teenager-->Adult) ……..So basically, mers age like humans, they are INSANELY similar to humans in alot of ways…But not every way obviously…

Mers are born with magic but their magic isn't able to use until they hit a certain age (4-6 for the much more powerful mers, 7-9 for average mers and usually 10-13 for weak powered mers on average…)

Mers can live up to 10,000+ years (needa figure that cap off point but uhhhhhhhhh a longass fucking time lmao...And they don't show physical aging for a longggggggg while...Like gotta be in the thousands before wrinkles even start to show up...) Mers can have mental issues considering this ENORMOUS lifespan but there are resources for such issues...

Next part we'll talk about actual mer powers/what powers each type of mer has lol. Idk when i'll get to that but i'll try and do it soon lol.

also, naruto and hashirama are special cases. one doesn't need to be a medical ninja to regenerate because medical ninjutsu is to apply to others, not to one's own body (except sakura and tsunade who have done it).

naruto can self heal because it's an ability kurama has and he benefits from it as the jinchuuriki host. otherwise kurama died too. not too sure about regenerative abilities but it does heal at least fatal injuries.

hashirama on the other hand could heal because he had an incredible amount of chakra. it's never stated he was a medic, but he got sage mode and sage mode has recuperation abilities. the reason behind his regenerative jutsu is unknown.

however it was that skill that inspired tsunade to create creation rebirth, the regeneration (not healing) technique she and sakura use. it's possible thanks to the massive amount of chakra their seals have stored inside.

At this point I'm just speculating for the fun of it, so let's see.

The first thing that caught my attention is how you said that medical ninjutsu is to be applied to others and not oneself —with few exceptions.

Again, I love how the exceptions murk the whole picture. If self-healing is possible from the medic nin point of view, then how do you categorize each action? How do you separate what is and what is not? What are the rules?

I'm not asking the manga to give me all the clues, because the story is not about medical ninjutsu. That's what fan theories are for.

Nevertheless, I'm here wondering about the history of medicine in the Narutoverse. From the mortality rate of the Warring States Period, I get that medical ninjutsu was not really a thing or it wasn't very advanced —at least not to the point of being significant against all the violence of their time. Given that Hashirama was the exception even among the Senjus, I'd dare to say that it was his status as a reincarnation of Asura which made him so powerful and gave him the crazy abilities.

Not so farfetched when you remember that in the Narutoverse, death is rarely the end of the users' abilities. I'm specifically talking about Hashirama's cells, okay? The rate of his regeneration technique could only be compared to either Naruto's kyubi jinchuriki skills or Tsunade's seal. Like you said, it is probably an effect of having such great chakra reserves. In Naruto's case, I dare to say it also has to do with being an Asura's reincarnation, since he was able to regenerate Kakashi's eye from zero after receiving his powers from the Sage of the Six Paths. With Tsunade's it seems to be a matter of mimicking the perfect chakra control of her grandfather, the same way Sakura would mimick Tsunade's later. That without accounting for the fact that Mito Uzumaki used to have a rhombus mark on her forehead too, which could be also part of the inspiration behind Tsunade's seal.

I love the mystery behind the stories of some Naruto's characters, lol. Anyway...

It reminds me of Chiyo, when she explained to Sasori that her technique to transfer life-force from oneself to a dead person to bring them back to life was not medical ninjutsu. It probably has to do with the fact you're not healing anymore. It's cool, really, how often the best medical shinobis end up using their knowledge to create a sort of battle technique.

I guess I'm just validating all your points, but I'm the type who needs to explain their thoughts while they're thinking. Sorry sjhdjdjdbdbdh

Truth be told, Batso is a pathetic character. I don't know how his colleagues can fear him and allow him to lead them, most of them knowing his history of trauma and mental instability.

It really helps the bat has the whole DC Comics company is blatantly rooting for him, against all the other heroes, many far more deserving of praise than him.

This remainds me of another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, who dared to confront Batso's self appointed authority, and challenge him to an open fight. Guy went so far as to remove his only advantage, his power ring to make the fight a fair one, forgetting there's no fair fight with a man trained in a gazillion martial arts, being a simple bar brawler. Even so, he acted as a gentleman.

That gesture notwithstanding, writers and stupid fans celebrated the bat's victory with only one punch, as it was a great accomplishment for a man like him, against an ill advised, though well intentioned, hothead. The point is Batso is always right, even if he's not. Writers do this because they have orders from above.

My question is: why do readers allow it? They even applauded it as one more of the signs of coolness of their hero.

No offense, batso-fanboys, but I have zero respect for you. You made this possible with your money and unyielding support without discerning where are the limits. It seems to me you have zero respect for yourselves, as well.

The rest of the of Justice League are enablers, because the order from the directorate of DC is: everyone must be the "yes men" to the bat.

Yes, Superman being, by Sovereign Decree, the worst enabler of them all. It figures, because he's used to be under the ruling of another unworthy human, Lois Lane.

Just two more things:

1) You may remember in the first New 52 animation, called "War" Batso makes constant disrespectful remarks about GL Jordan, a respected member of an inter galactic cop squadron called the GL Corps, being even capable to steal his ring from his hand. "You weren't concentrating" isn't an explanation. Since childhood, I've been told that ring has to chose you because you are worthy of the responsibility. Can only be removed after you die, whether you are looking or not. Or is it so easy to being taken off you finger when you are sleeping because "you weren't concentrating..."?

2) If Batso is so great...why didn't the ring chose him? Something is not so special about the bat.

In the implausible scenario he could've taken the trinket from Jordan's finger, the ring should've return instantly to its rightful bearer. It doesn't matter: it was possible because there's nothing impossible for Batso, to make him look cool, no matter the rules previously stablished by DC Comics for all the other heroes. They don't apply to Batso. He's soooo cool!

I also remember when Aquaman was about to smash Batso's face in, in the comic Throne of Athlantis. A pity: DC's heads didn't let it happen.

This is a lost battle because the owner company is in favor of their most valuable asset (Batso) and the fans are a bunch of knuckleheads (no offense...) without discern and a lot of self inserting issues of their own.

It's like trying to talk logic to your girlfriend or your wife: it just doesn't take. (Sorry, ladies. Again, no offense...).
