#sapphic rep

I've decided that from now I'll hold every sapphic media to the A League of Their Own standard. Meaning that if it does not have AT LEAST a single butch and a single sapphic of color it is not good enough for me because it does not represent me.

2023 Reads: On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden
Genre: Fiction: Scifi  Age Level: Young adult  Format: Graphic novel
Summary: A crew travels through space from planet to planet with the goal of repairing broken down structures, chunks of history left behind. As they piece together the past, bits of their own come back to light- including new member Mia, who’s joined the ship in hopes of rebuilding her own history.
Thoughts: AAAA!!!!!
THIS IS SO GOOD BDHBDGJH For context, I read this book over a three-hour flight, during which it was so heavy that I had to use the drop tray to hold it up. And for further context, I’m writing this review months later, and I’m STILL ecstatic over it!!
I think the problem with graphic novels who want to tell a story like this- in which there’s lots of worldbuilding, long character arcs, and a pace that can slow down as needed- is that graphic novels are usually just too short to not feel scrunched. Because of this, most of the best graphic novels are smaller-scale(such as This One Summer). Which is why I’m SO glad that this is so long, because it felt like the absolute PERFECT length for this story. I was so in love the whole way through. The storytelling is great, the writing is wonderful, I loved the way all the characters were written(the found family in this is SO good), and most of all, it’s fucking beautiful. The art style in this is just insane and I was in love with the coloring. Like holy shit!! 100% eye candy. This is just so good and so sweet!!
The only real critique I have is that I felt like the eventual meeting of the MC and another character was a little anti-climatic, but it felt like that was done on purpose since they hadn’t seen each other in years and it WAS a little awkward. Either way, it makes up for it a thousand times over, so I 100% recommend this. Genuinely so good. Losing my mind.
Rating: 5/5  Trigger warnings: Bullying, violence, death and near-death experiences, misgendering. Rep: Sapphic MC + sapphic SCs, wlw romances, non-binary SC, poc SCs.

queer books for pride month: day 9
I have just finished school (like all of it) and have been hit by a deep sense of existential dread. I am distracting myself by writing these so I might finally catch up.
Legends & Lattes- Travis Baldree
Genre: Fantasy LGBTQ+ Rep.: Sapphic MC & LI, wlw relationship CW: Fire (arson), injury, violence, stalking, sexual harrassment
Plot: After a life of quests, fights, and bloodshed, Viv has decided to opt for a more relaxed life. She has just discovered her true passion: coffee. With the winnings of her years of labour, Viv sets up a small coffee shop in the hopes that she will finally achieve her dream. In her efforts, she will discover the joys of not only good food and drink, but also of friendship, community, and love.
Why I'd recommend this book: This book just feels like a warm hug. I'm not normally the most emotional person, but I nearly cried at just how cute and happy this is. Sure, it has its rough points, but they only go to show how overcoming adversity is possible. If you need comfort and reassurance, this is the book for you.

wylan and jesper being two fully fleshed out characters independent of each other with complex trauma, emotions and plotlines, but also having a queer relationship storyline that’s touched on throughout the books (and s2 of the show) without any homophobia tropes/plots is something that is so special to me. they have your average relationship drama (average for a fantasy series). they have cute flirty crush moments. they have a father telling a kid he’s good for his son. they genuinely mean everything to me.

I’m starting to notice a pattern in Sapphic couples in animated shows lately that there’s the happy go lucky bi girl and her girlfriend is a lesbian is more quiet and tough
To be clear I’m not mad at this at all. I’m very happy we’re getting more rep regardless! I’m just wondering why is this becoming a pattern and curious what your opinions about this are

Bluepoch gave us the gift of barely-subtext tragic sapphic-centric media do NOT throw that away.
Context regarding PJSK and Undertale under cut.

Project Sekai cast is dominated by female characters but mlm is more popular, meanwhile Undertale has canon wlw rep and oh my god they’re at the bottom. I have nothing against these fandoms or media (I’m literally currently/was in them) but yeah. I just HOPE r99 doesn’t end up in a similar state.

currently reading WataOshi vol. 3 bonus stories for the first time (SPOILERS AHEAD), and i gotta say:
somehow, this books take on queer representation is a perfect blend of "Everyone is Gay" escapist fantasy, and the depiction of how harsh and cruel reality can be for LGBT people
Yes, Claire and Rae get to have a wedding and their own kids, with fully supportive parents/in-laws. And Yes, everyone from thier friend group (except for like, two dudes) ends up being incredibly queer
But also...
the story does not pretend this world is all rainbows and sunshines for LGBT people, just becuase its a yuri romance. The world at large is still either ignorant, or openly hostile towards non-cishet people. The state and the church dont legally recognize Rae & Claire as married, even though everyone who knows them does.
Inori's depiction of LGBT issues manages to simultaneously be realistic, AND incredibly optimistic, and i absolutely love her for it
