In this Wolfstar-raising-Harry fic, Remus is a man on the brink of coping, unable to put the word ‘love’ into his own mouth or to accept that he is deserving of comfort and afraid of the pain that love can bring, even as he finds ways to fill his young ward’s life full of it. A toddler Harry himself is finding his way to security and trust having been rescued from both neglect and violence at the hands of the Dursleys and as readers we bear witness to the role he plays in bringing Remus a little further back from the edge. The Wolfstar featured here is not one of unstoppable burning passion, but sharp edges and unspoken words, a slow forgiveness between two individuals who are both betrayer and betrayed. You’ll also see one of the gentlest versions of Molly Weasley and her family, a truly cruel rat returning from the dead, and something that inexplicably lodged in my memory - magical cereal dragons bellowing marshmallow fire. I recommend this fic as one of the most effective at conveying Remus’ complete exhaustion in attempting to reclaim life in the face of secrecy, loss and grief, having been a weapon in a war than most were unaware of, with bright spots of hope and humour in the normality of daily life on the road to recovery.

A bitter laugh escapes him. “So you’ll curse the poor thing with a werewolf for a guardian?”

Comments: It’s quite impressive when a fic is able to shatter me into a million sobbing pieces every single chapter and still have me yearning for more. A stunning, but almost excruciatingly raw, look at grief, trauma, and healing. If you like your angst with a heaping side of extra angst, plus a happy ending, this one’s for you.

Truly, the only other writer who does justice to the complexity and poignancy of being Remus Lupin is probably the legendary @mskingbean89 author of All the Young Dudes. If you enjoyed All the Young Dudes, you will love sarewolf's other now completed fic "that's the art of getting by", in which Remus gets custody of baby Harry and Sirius is found to be innocent. Things seem to be looking up, but the ugliness of past betrayals and bitterness of unresolved emotions still need to be dealt with. Sarewolf's current work "when covered in snow" is set in a different timeline where, as the tagline warns, "Just because everybody lives, doesn’t mean nobody is hurt." This is by no means a comprehensive list, but these are some of my very favs:

Wolfstar Raising Harry

Ten Reasons (To Go To Michigan) by @greyeyedmonster-18 (I also love these two unrelated wolfstar raising harry microfics by the same author) — This is a Sirius raising Harry and meeting recently divorced Remus (who happens to be a writer) on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A must read! that's the art of getting by by sarewolf — Remus becomes Harry's guardian and they move to a muggle village in the middle of nowhere. Eventually, Sirius is freed and comes to stay with them, but can they get back what they once had? Honestly, majorly obsessed with this one, but watch out for the angst! Stealing Harry by copperbadge — In an alternate universe where Sirius Black never went to Azkaban, Harry divides his life between the Dursleys' house and Mr. Black's bookshop -- until Sirius realises what the Dursleys are doing to him, and takes him away from their care. This series is fucking amazing and actually spans several of the books!! Mr Mouse by TracingPatterns (which continues in their wolfstar raising harry series) — A lovely little piece in which a young Harry learns about grief.

Like Real People Do by third_crow (part of the coffee shop au series) — Sirius raising Harry, when he starts falling for local barista Remus Lupin. This is also a beautiful story about what it's like to live with epilepsy and I am extremely obsessed with this series. The Things I Did by Lolo_row — canon compliant, Remus gets custody of Harry and works to get Sirius out of Azkaban. A bit of angst, but tasty! the dogfather au by hollimichele — Harry was raised by his adoptive muggle family, when one day a big black dog shows up. His parents just thinks he's a stray, and Padfoot becomes the family pet (to keep an eye on Harry, and protect him from Voldemort). Eventually this morphs into Remus also coming into the picture.

Wolfstar Raising Teddy

the mayors of simpleton by @fruityindividual — Divorced wolfstar are co-parenting a very mischievious Teddy who is not about to let his dads stay divorced!! Honestly this fic is so funny, so heartfelt, so fucking lovely. It also features the most beautiful portrayal of a blind character that I ever seen. A must read! Of Memories and Milk Thievery by @mayescapade — Divorced wolfstar raising Teddy again! Wolfstar have been co-parents for years and they wont stop terrorizing/pranking one another. An Infinte Ocean by orphan_account — Single dad Remus. Remus Lupin knows two things--working and caring for his son, Teddy. When his babysitter sets up crowdfunding so Teddy can go swim with the sea turtles at the local animal rescue, Remus doesn't realise how completely their life is going to change. Especially when he meets Sirius Black, the weekend merman in the aquatic show, and someone who might convince him of love at first sight. Honestly a lovely piece, and it also features the Potter clan.

Let's Play Pretend by MsAlexWP — My current obsession!! I can't tell you how many times I've read this. Single parent Remus and single parent Sirius meet at a play date and end up pretend dating so that the old women in Sirius' building (who basically stalk him) will stop trying to set him up. Neither of them can date at the moment, so what could possibly go wrong?? Ultimate comfort fic. Of Quiet Hearts And Thundering Dreams by TracingPatterns — This is single parent Sirius and single parent Remus, both having moved to a small village and meeting at Harry & Teddy's school. A Cup of Sugar by MsAlexWP — Again, they are both single parents. Harry Potter is recovering from surgery and facing the worst summer ever until a guy with the same crutches as Harry moves in across the street with his son. So lovely!! Hide-and-Seek by onehundredflamingos — Wolfstar girldads raising their adoptive daughter Cassie, who is also a werewolf. This is the story of her first transformation. It's soooo sweet! @industrations has done a bunch of wolfstar and Cassie art, which you should absolutely go and cry over!

an off-the-top-of-my-head intro to wolfstar reclist for a request on the wolfstar discord. criteria: requestee reads drarry, fluffy to light angst, "maybe classic marauders era for a taste of what the fic is typically like?" i went for (a) present-day active authors and (b) 2017ish "modern-day classics," <50k, mostly canon-setting.

Upstairs, Downstairs by @squidgilator (5k, G): great little "intro" fic to one of my favorite hogwarts era pining/get-together authors, "In which Hogwarts traps Sirius and Remus on an endless staircase to make them talk to each other."

Cooler Than Frogs by Penknife (4k, T) & Not In Front Of the Dog! by Engie_Ivy (2k, T) are similar uniquely wolfstar/HP-magic adorable get-togethers.

Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy…Best Friend, Brother, Roommate, Lie by @femme--de--lettres (9k, T): muggle au, Hope Lupin keeps count of how many attempts it takes her son to finally admit that he's in love with his best friend. if you like this, author has two longfic WIPs (a spy AU and a law school AU with terrific rep that's very wonderfully and honestly done!)

on the issue of fever and delight by aeridi0nis (12k, T). post-prank fic, prangst get-together is one of the most classsiicccc wolfstar tropes ever. stellar characterization & just magical prose: "After the initial shock, Sirius closes his mouth. Clears his throat. He wears repentance poorly, as all former princes do; his spine seems reluctant to bend that way, so all he can scrounge up is a pathetic imitation of every other guilty person he’s ever witnessed. It’s perhaps the first time that Remus has seen him fall short in something."

June, and Other Natural Disasters by montparnasse (5k, T) "sirius/remus, summer, huge gay crush". montparnasse is an absolutely classic 2015-2018ish era wolfstar writer with a Certain Writing Style and you either love it or you don't, & if you love this relatively short one, literally everything else in their catalogue are must-reads.

There's something terrifying in the dungeons. late enough to be 'classic' (tbh any A/N that uses the term mwpp instead of marauders era is straight away a 'classic'). no but seriously this has all the defining features of a classic wolfstar fic to me: strong characterizations of all four marauders, lovely Shenanigans vibe / they're Up To No Good, there's Trauma but make it funny, overall just a great blend of light and angst.

The Active Reader by veeagainst (7k, M). When a craze for pulpy romance novels about Dark Creatures starts in Gryffindor, Sirius reads one about a werewolf -- and decides to write a better one. hilarious, intellectual, and hot; who says you can't have it all! very engaging!!

The Weather Inside by earlybloomingparentheses (43k, M). a classic canon-setting 'falling in love during the first war' story, ensemble fic with background jily. plausibly canon compliant, fic ends happily.

that’s the art of getting by by sarewolf (40k, M). "angst with a happy ending" perfectly describes this fic, one of the best remus/wolfstar raises harry especially for its length / <50k fic, and an absolute modern-day classic (read: Gaerfinn will ban me if i don't rec this)

Do you have any marauders fic recs for people that are like just getting into the random?

Cause I've heard like all the young dudes and I've started it but I just wondered where to go after I finish it if you had any recommendations. Sorry if that was all over the place thank you so much have a good day/night! :))))

there are a lot of good ones out there but I personally read Just Lovers (AU I think), Choices (Canon Compliant), Crimson Rivers (AU), Best Friends Brother (AU), and Art Heist Baby! (AU) They're all main ship jegulus tho (except for Choices but that also has jegulus) which might be weird after reading atyd.

For main ship Wolfstar, i'd recommend "Runes" by YumeNouveau (AU), "waterloo" by frogsandfairies (kinda CC), "that's the art of getting by" by sarewolf (kinda CC) and "Lupine" by BayleyWinchest (AU)

For main ship jily, "feel like a fool (waiting for you)" by sunsickjune (could be CC), "Sunshine in My Eyes" by monroeslittle (AU), "James Potter Won't Go Quietly" by la_plus_heureuse (AU), "Shelf Awareness" by GhostofBambi
