Growing between the stone paving of an historic croft front garden was Koniga maritima (alyssum, snow-white carpet, sweet alison, snow in summer, snowdrift, sea alyssum). This compact, low-growing plant is an annual or short-lived perennial. The tiny, white flowers are honey-scented flowers and produced throughout summer.

Last Flowers

A Tamlin POV set during the events of ACOFAS.

It hit him, the weight of it, as soon as he returned. As if he had never been freed from his curse. As if, upon returning to the Spring Court, his heart had calcified. As if it had been happening this whole time. As if he had never been cursed at all. Perhaps he hadn’t. Maybe the whole thing had been another one of his delusions. He had dreamed the last few hundred years. He had laid down in the dirt, and closed his eyes, and the earth had taken him.

     And there had been stars under his eyelids, pricking through, willing him to open them. To life, to the new. He was held safely within, only the stars could come through. And when he finally opened his eyes, it was night, and he expected it to last forever. But he would never be in a place that was so stagnant, so stifling, again. He woke up, and he was high above, he breathed in the fresh mountain air, the sun was rising over the peaks. The world minuscule below him. Glittering like the stars, thousands of tiny fae lights. And stars raining from above, that he could catch in his hand. They were everywhere, surrounding him, he had gone into the pool, he was swimming amongst stars, forever. Not drowning—he swam, he flowed, he rose above, he walked out. It was a river, flowing, of many colors, to the sunset, to the sea. A rainbow. A promise that what lay beyond the waves was not Hybern, but only more flowing, more freedom.

     He walked, and the night bloomed. There were people in the streets, High Fae and Lesser, and no lesser at all. All mingling, happy. Safely within. He could hear the laughter and sweet words whispered. And the anticipation, walking up stairs, everyone dressed elegantly, shades of blue, and purple, and grey, and glittering jewels. All dressed in their best for her. There was a moment of confusion in the crowd, and panic, that he was alone—but a hand reached out, and he saw the wings, and smiled, and was reassured, and was one of them.

     And he took the hand, and joined the others, already waiting in their seats in the front row. And there was a great hush, and she appeared before them in a halo of light, sitting down at her harp, and singing. His mother. He looked around. Everyone was transfixed. And her song was joyous. A joy reflected in the crowd. They cheered, and clapped, and wept for being moved. And she was bashful, and humble, and beckoned with her hand for him to join her on stage. And he looked up to her, in awe, and wonder. But rose from his seat, and reached out.

     In the morning, the lilacs began to brown, and shrink from him. The leaves paper-thin, and crumbling. The scent was gone. He heard no birds chirping in the trees.

     The light had come to him then, wreathed in night. Obscured. He had not recognized it. But for the red hair, and the scar, and the eye of gold. The sun in his eye. And he had pushed him away, and hissed, and bit. Over and over and over. Until the sun bled, pouring down his chin.

     And the petals of the sweet alyssum had fallen to the earth. It had been heavy on him, the petals weighing him down until his eyelids drooped, and finally closed.

     And there was laughter again, and vases of sunflowers, and a zinnia tied to his buttonhole. Papers spread out on a table, and the table was round, and they were all there, Bron, and Hart, and Andras, and the sentries, one by one sitting at the table. And he stood, waiting for Lucien to sit first, and then sitting himself. And there was no head of the table, no bigger or smaller chairs. And he looked around. Alis was there too, and the villagers, it was all of them, his entire Court, and they laughed, and drank, and shared poems. It went on and on, ever-expanding, never-fading.

     And then the irises had wilted. And the wisteria. The sweet pea. Snapdragon and foxglove and hyacinth. All drooping, heavy. The peonies had fallen to the ground. And no summer flowers replacing them. No moonflowers, or lilies. No sunflowers or aster.

     No Autumn.

     It was a changing of his Court, finally a movement, an evolution. But no fruits on the vines, or the boughs. Everything was retreating. Fading from him.

     Insubstantial as a dream. Where the moonflowers opened, and tuberose, and jasmine, their scents overwhelming, until they closed at the break of day, and the morning glory replaced them. And there were colors, a rainbow of them, streaming across the sky, filling the halls of his manor, that was empty now. Blank as a primed canvas. And the every-color attached itself in abstract forms swiped across, filled in as blocks, free of form, only feeling, emotion. It was a sort of freedom that burst through the floors, splitting the black marble, the jagged gold lines bleeding, the windows and the doors opening out, and the colors running back. And the stagnancy was gone, a refreshing breeze swept through, and everything smelled of paint.

     And he woke, and everything was shut in again, and it stank of must and mildew and dust and rot. And an energy was in him, the rebellious agitation of Spring, and he tore through the manor, shattering windows, and slashing doors, his fiddle in splinters against the walls, the canvases all torn. Except hers. But the smell, and the rot, remained. The stagnancy of standing water, and the smell of bacteria building.

     The blight spread quickly after that. He went outside, and there was no more drooping, no more yellow-and-browning. Soon, only the rose garden was left. Roses always lasted so late in the year, in the Courts that weren’t fixed. They held on here, too, as if hoping he would last. Clinging to the last bit of life in him. Willing him to come back. But then, finally, relenting. There was nothing to nourish them. He could nourish nothing with his hands, awkward as they were, clumsy as paws. He could not caress, or coax, and encourage the blossom, the bulb, the briar. Petals fell, leaves curled at his touch. Recoiling from it, instinctively. It all fell away.

     And he realized, finally, that he wanted it to. He no longer lamented, or resisted it. Let it come finally, the blight.

     Let it come for him.

     After Rhysand left, he gathered the rest. Somehow, he did not tear through them. Lucien’s favorite handkerchief, pressed flowers. Letters from his mother, scented of cinnamon. Jackets, and shirts—when Lucien had sought him out after the meeting of humans and fae, he had said he had had no other clothes. He had had nowhere else to go.

     His eye had burned, the fire in it coming through, flickering, and rising, and fading again. He had been in so much pain.

     And he had hurt him. He could still feel the impact of his fists on his face, and Lucien egging him on, pushing him to go further. To just do it already. And he did, and there was blood running down his chin. He had put his hand to his face, and saw the blood on it, and had looked at him, wide-eyed.

     And he had told him to leave.

     Get out, he had said. Please. Get out.

     And he had. But then he kept coming back, and trying, like the roses lingering that bloom well into the Autumn, and even into Winter.  And so he had plucked them out, torn them from their roots. Rhysand had helped him to see—

     Everything you touch you destroy.

     And he let go, and the blossoms scattered on the wind, blowing south.

     And then it was all gone. The yellow roses, and the white, and red. The eglantine, pink with a gold eye. The green turned to brown, and then black. The thorns curled round, and covered him, and sank into his flesh. And dragged him down. He would never escape.

     It had all been a dream. And he had woken up, and seen what he truly was. So had everyone else. They had fled from him. He had only dreamed that they hadn’t. He had just seen it, that was it—the blood, and the brain matter leaking out of their ears. His mother’s severed head. Rhysand staring at him, full of fury, yet doing nothing. Knowing it was better this way.

     There was still smoke in his eyes, and the scent of burnt flesh. He had torn through the manor, and raged, and raged, and he was so tired now. He walked, shedding each layer like petals falling—his bandolier, his boots, his tunic. Everything, until there were only antlers, and fangs, and claws. Fur, and paws tearing up the earth. And he sank down, and curled himself up, and went to sleep a monstrous beast.

Rings of smoke; rippling water — Twisting vines of emerald ivy; twirled ropes of rose tourmaline alyssum — Blankets of sun; carpets of snow — Waning gibbous moon, half alive; silver stars shimmer, silent in the sky.

Amber skies; a sun of champagne — Silk grandidierite, telescopic seas glittered sapphire in your eyes — Inked skies; a tapestry of stars — Winter’s night of melanite; icy eves thawed by the warmth of our new love.

Feathered mist; silken rose petals — The tangled ropes of blushed spinel alyssum wove us our wreathed crowns of love.  Fire’s pearl ash; stars aglow with us — Glacial, time froze still, blessing us, alone, a stolen moment of heaven. 

Stars of moonstone; the moon of quartz — The candlelight in the cabin flickered, dancing, as the time ticked away, Talking hours on the window’s ledge… Jade ivy bound the rusted hands of time as saphh’rine mist veiled its cruel face.

The cherished hours we spent together, the wished-for moments stolen away; Every second remembered in love, barely less than I’ve been in with you.

I am looking for the word that says of love what hasn't been said before. Something like the spray of swallows that exhale from the ocean's foamy caps. Like mountains come unhidden by the clouds, I am looking for a word which is giant and invisible and always there. I am looking for an endearment, like trust made fresh, like the man who naps while his lover writes poetry. I am looking for a new kind of bravery word, like the alyssum which dares to grow on the shoulder of an escarpment while the sea goes wild beneath. I am looking for the word which transcends the obstacles of familiarity, like a seabird's shadow gliding over logs and rocks and seashored debris. I am looking for a word which tells, like a rune, of a sudden constellation. Which praises fidelity to the craft every bird undertakes; to hover unflapping into a headwind. I am looking, but I hope to write a thousand volumes before I find it. ~

‘Symbiosis’: Chapter Twenty-Five

“You never said what they mean,” she asked as the music continued, her eyes moving to his boutonniere. “The flowers.”

His smile was challenged as the corners of his lips fell.

“Sweet alyssum means ‘worth beyond beauty,’” he said, his feet imperceptibly slowing and his prosthetic hand relaxing against her waist. “Tyrion chose those for me.”

Her thumb skimmed the back of his left hand as they stood there, silently agreeing with Tyrion. Jaime was, after all, so much more than another pretty face.

“And the others?” she pressed quietly.

They weren’t dancing anymore, the song going on without them. Jaime was staring at their hands, now clasped together between them.

“Gladiolus was rumored to be given to the gladiators following victory…” He bit his lip, then met her gaze. “They symbolize strength of character and honor.”

Honor.

The last time she’d heard that word had been half a lifetime ago, when she was newly enlisted in the Army and recited all her vows and oaths. But, while Tyrion and Shae knew her service was important to her, they wouldn’t have known what those vows had truly meant.

Only one person knew: after all, he’d watched her do her best to live out those words in her actions every day she’d known him, because he brought out the best in her. And that person was bashfully avoiding her eyes, like he’d been caught giving her a love note.

“You picked them.”

Sea-green eyes met hers, seeking her approval, and her love spilled over so much she could taste it on her tongue. Never had she felt so strongly about the man standing in front of her, everything laid bare and awaiting her response.

The song finished, easing into another slow song whose guitar strumming filled the air as she blinked.

“Jaime, I—”

“Care to dance, Major?” a voice purred.

Ingall pulled the spare sea melon out and offered it to Yuki, “we're growing these here already, but you’ll have to get in with Mino to get some,” the former elf laughed, “he found us a place to grow them.”

"Kay~" he sang as he grabbed the spoon from Tamashi and got her a large bite on a wobbly spoon to offer her with a grin.

Yuki's tail wiggled before he chuckled "Oh my. Hopefully he won't wack my ankles like he did when I mentioned maybe making adult sake shave ice."

Kapitulo # 5

Eyes Off You: I will

Bago kami umalis ay totoong tinuruan niya akong huminga nang maayos sa ilalim ng tubig. He even trained me to release bubbles using my nose. Natagalan lang akong matuto dahil nalulunod at nasisinghap ko rin ang tubig. 

Sa tuwing ganoon ang nangyayari ay mas tinututukan niya 'ko, that's the reason I fake it sometimes. Nang mapansin niya na sinasadya ko 'yon ay iniipit niya ang ilong ko o kaya'y pabiro akong nilulubog sa tubig.

It was full of fun. Kung hindi lang kinailangan umuwi. He got some calls on our way home and he even informed me it's his secretary. Their company is one of the high-class industrialist of sea vehicle that is popular nationwide. 

"Sumilong ka nga muna at tirik ang araw!" sigaw ni manang nang maabutan niya 'ko na nagbubungkal ng lupa.

"Hindi naman gaanong maaraw. Nahaharangan naman po ako ng puno." 

"S'ya sige! Tawagin mo nalang si Berto kung may kailangan ka." aniya at iniwan ako.

Binubungkal ko kasi ang mga lupa na kinakailangan ng mga bulaklak na itatanim ko. Marami na ang mayroong bunga kaya naman naisipan ko muling magtanim.

Tumayo ako at kinuha ang mga ginuhitan kong paso. I painted it with minimal floral design in shades of pastel and a black color on the edge. Nilagay ko ang mga lupa at tinanim na ang mga buto. Tatlong uri iyon ng mga bulaklak; sweet alyssum, forget-me-not, and snow-in-summer. 

Simula nang magpinta ako ng mga paso ay nakahiligan ko na rin ang mga bulaklak kaya naman nang matuto akong magtanim ay inangkin ko na ang hardin namin. I want to study a lot about flowers and its origins, but whenever I hold on to my paint tools, I also wanted to enhance it. I don't want to pressure myself. That's why I combined them both. 

"Tapos ka na ba hija?" nilingon ko si mommy na biglang sumulpot kung saan.

Inayos ko muna ang mga pwesto nito bago ako lumapit sa kanya. My mom definitely knew that she has this dark aura. Her deep eyes, thin lips, and arch eyebrows could make the gossipers in our town envy her.

"Yes. Maghuhugas lang po ako ng kamay." sagot ko at pinaandar ang tubig sa lababo.

"Hindi mo naman na dapat gawin 'yan. Pwede mo namang iutos nalang 'yan kay Berto." mahinang sambit niya sa gilid ko.

Nilingunan ko siya at tinapunan ng seryosong tingin. Kumurap siya at nag-iwas. Kunwari pa itong tumitingin sa mga bulaklak. Alam na hindi ko nagustuhan ang sinabi.

"I won't take your advice. You know how much I love my flowers. It's relaxing. Why won't you try?" 

Maarte niya akong pinasadahan ng tingin. Tinaasan niya ako ng kilay at pinakita ang mga kuko niyang bagong gawa.

"You see my nails? This is more relaxing than your flowers!" she said in a high-pitched tone!

Umirap ako at tinanguhan siya. 

"We have our own sentiment, Mom. I respect yours, therefore you should also respect mine." nginitian ko siya at nilapitan.

Tumikhim siya tila sumasang-ayon sa sinabi ko bago haplusin ang braso ko. Bumaba ito sa aking kamay at marahang minasahe ito. Pinindot niya ang palad ko at inikot ang mga daliri. Uminit ang mata ko habang pinagmamasdan ang ginagawa niya. 

"The softness of your hand always reminds me of how vulnerable you are. It scares me that one day you'll be hurt." She uttered softly as she continued massaging my hand.

"It won't happen, Mom. Don't worry about me, please." 

"I will never be not worried about you hija. Mabuti sana kung parati kang may nakakasama habang abala kami ng Daddy mo." binitiwan niya ang kamay ko at makahulugan akong tiningnan.

Kumunot ang noo ko habang iniisip ang sinabi niya. Is that what she worries about everytime? Hindi naman na kailangan dahil kung hindi ako umaalis kasama si Declan, eskuwelahan at bahay lamang ang tinutungo ko.

"Parati naman po akong hatid sundo ni Kuya Owen sa school. Kahit hindi na kailangan since graduating na ako ng senior high. Kung aalis man po ako, you know that I'm always with Declan." 

Panandalian siyang natigilan dahil sa huling sinabi ko. As if she don't know about it. Tumaas bahagya ang kilay niya at malisyosa akong tiningnan.

"Right! Mabuti nalang at nariyan si Declan para samahan ka nang hindi ka maburyo rito. Are you two good? Kailan siya ulit bibisita sayo?" natutuwang tanong niya at sumigla bigla ang mukha.

"Abala po siya dahil sa kontrata para sa shipments ng mga barko. Hindi niya nabanggit kung kailan po ulit siya bibisita. I don't mind since he's working." saad ko kahit na ang tootoo ay parati kong iniisip kung kailan siya ulit darating.

"Ganoon ba. Since you mention about it, I kind of think that you should enrol for Marine Engineering or Marine Transportation as your course in college." sabi niya na tila nananaginip dahil magkasiklop ang dalawang kamay niya habang nakasandal ang pisngi niya roon.

Umuwang ang bibig ko. Nagugulat dahil sa malabo at biglaang sinabi niya. Marahan siyang dumikit nang makita ang itsura ko. Pinag-iisipan ko pa nga lang ang kursong kukunin ko ngunit mukhang napangunahan na ako.

"No way. It's far from my interest, Mom. Baka ang mangyari niyan ay imbes na mga barko ang magawa ko, e hardin at pintura ang mabuo ko."

Umasim ang mukha niya at buong atensyon ang itinuon sa akin.

"You can set aside your passion, hija, just let it be your habit. Magagawa mo naman siguro iyon habang inaaral mo ang mga bagay na may kinalaman sa barko." 

Her reasons irritate me. Hindi ko magawang balewalain dahil pakiramdam ko ay mababa ang tingin niya sa kakayahan ko. I'm choosing my passion for anything else as long as I foresee myself happy with it.

"Mom, you shouldn't push something I don't want. Let me strive for my passion."

Umiling ako at nilagpasan siya. I know she's suggesting it because of Declan. Natutuwa siya masyado kaya naman iniisip niya ngayon na kumuha ako ng kursong may kaugnayan sa kanya. Dad is a known captain for decades, but he never meddle with my decisions or even lures me of things related to the ship.

Hindi naman sapat na dahilan ang nararamdaman ko kay Declan para magbago ang pananaw ko. Our feelings shouldn't be superior to our dreams. 

Umakyat ako sa kwarto dala ang mga baked cookies. Matagal akong naligo at nagbihis. Tutal wala na naman akong gagawin kaya simpleng pambahay lamang ang suot ko. A white sleeveless top and a cotton high-waisted short.

Nang mahawakan ko ang cellphone ko ay nagulat ako sa sampung missed calls ni Declan. May apat na magkasunod na message kaya naman iyon ang binuksan ko.

Declan:

I'm done dealing with some clients. I'm on my way home. Can I call?

Declan:

I'm home. What are you doing, Miss?

Declan:

You're not answering my calls. Schoolworks? Sleeping? 

Declan:

Call when you're free...

Halos dalawang oras na ang nakalipas kaya imposibleng naghihintay pa rin 'to. Masyado yatang napaaga ang uwi niya kaya nagkasalisi kami. Akala ko pa naman gagabihin siya ng uwi.

Pinindot ko ang call button pero binaba ko rin nang makita ang laptop ko. Binuksan ko ang facetime at agaran siyang tinawagan. Hindi pa nagtatagal sa screen ay bumungad na ang mukha niya. Mukhang nag-aabang talaga siya. 

Magulo ang buhok niya habang gumagapang sa taas ng kama. Tinutok niya ito kung saan tama lang para makita ang kalahati ng katawan niya. Nagsuot pa siya ng damit bago ako binalingan. 

"I'm sorry, I called you earlier for so many times. Did I bother you?" he asked huskily.

Umiling ako at hinigit ang cookies ko. Nakita niya iyon kaya naman pinagtaasan niya 'ko ng kilay.

"It's okay. Hindi ko nasagot kasi nagtanim ako ng mga bulaklak. Did you sleep?" sagot ko at kumagat sa hawak ko.

"I just nap," he shrugged. "Really? Kaya pala maliliit ang mga bulaklak dahil ikaw ang nag-aalaga." I saw the amusement in his eyes. Nakangisi siyang inaasar ako.

Umirap ako at pinagtaasan siya ng kilay. "It's because they are naturally tiny." 

Tumango siya at pinaglaruan ang kanyang labi. "What flower do you like?" 

"I can't choose only one since they are all beautiful, but I love black-eyed susan the most." nakangiti kong sagot habang nakatutok sa kanya.

"I never heard about it before..." magkasalubong na ang kilay niya habang iniisip ang sinabi ko. Bahagya akong natawa at inilingan siya.

"It's fine." nginitian ko siya at tumayo upang kuhanin ang sketch pad ko. 

I memorize each of his details on screen and draw it on my pad. He knew what I'm doing, and he's cooperating perfectly. Nakatitig lamang siya sa akin habang hinihintay na matapos ang ginagawa ko.

I twisted some part and focused on the important details. Binalingan ko muli siya ng tingin at mas lalo lamang akong napangiti dahil hindi naaalis ang tingin niya sa akin. Kahit na kinawayan ko siya ay hindi nabago ang kanyang paninitig.

Mas ginanahan lamang akong gumuhit. 

Nang matapos ko ang ginagawa ko ay linapit ko ito sa camera. Gumalaw siyang bahagya at nangingiti nang pinagmamasdan ang ginuhit ko.

"Ako ba talaga 'yan?" seryoso niyang tanong.

Nagtataka kong tiningnan muli ang drawing ko. Hindi man ito kagandahan pero sigurado naman akong nakuha ko lahat ng kailangan para maguhit siya. 

"Does it look like someone else? Is it bad?" hindi ko maitago ang irita sa boses ko. 

Umiling siya at nginisian ako.

"No. Akong ako 'yan. I look eminently smitten with you." he proudly said.

"Kung ganoon bakit ka pa nagtanong? Hindi ka ba kumbinsido sa itsura o nararamdaman mo?" hindi ko na maitago ang irita sa boses ko habang masamang tingin na ang ipinupukaw ko sakaniya.

Nanlaki ang mata niya at umangat sa kinauupuan. Umiling siya habang natatawa. Tinaas niya ang kanyang dalawang kamay at kinagat ang labi.

"Oh, easy... I'm just messing around. Calm down, alright? I'm true to you, Eucleia." seryoso niyang sabi kahit na nakikitaan ko pa rin ng tuwa ang mata niya.

Nagkibit balikat ako at inirapan siya. His frustration is now visible on his face. 

"I'm sorry if you get the wrong idea of it. I'm just fascinated by how detailed it is." 

Tinaasan ko siya ng kilay. "Talaga?"

Ngumiti siya ngunit nag-seryoso rin. "Talaga," his lips slightly pouted.

Nagpakawala ako ng hininga at yumakap sa tuhod ko. Siguro naman ay hindi masama kung ibabahagi ko ang tungkol sa napag-usapan namin ni mommy kanina. Baka sakali na magkaroon siya ng opinyon tungkol doon.

Huminga ako ng malalim. "When my mom learned about your work, she suggests I should study Marine Engineering or Marine Transportation..."

Nabigla siya sa sinabi ko. Halatang hindi inaasahan ang tungkol doon. Kahit naman ako ay hindi inaasahan ang bagay na 'yon. His face moves confusely.

"And?" 

"Sinabi ko na hindi ako interesado. She refused. I don't know if I disappointed her, but if she is, then I'm sorry." 

I know I shouldn't be sorry because it's my right to choose, but disobeying her would probably disappoint her.

Masama na ang timpla ng mukha niya habang iniintindi ang sinabi ko. Suminghap siya at seryoso akong tiningnan.

"Your momma should consider your decisions first. If you're uncomfortable with the thought of it, then they should support you about choosing the thing you truly like..."

"If you have something in your heart, chase it even more. If it will make you grow and free, a different opinion shouldn't affect you. Remember that I will always support and understand whatever your decision is."

His words adhere deeply to me. The comfort it sent provokes me to proceed fearlessly. Thinking that he is encouraging me to follow the things I want is beyond I could ask for.
