My own interpretation of Qrow's character in V8

also, before we get really into this, of course, there will be spoilers. don’t say i didn’t warn you. also, probably don’t take this too seriously? i wrote this at like 3 in the morning last night and wanted to rework it into something more proper. i tried to make it flow more properly and fuck this may not even make any sense, so bare with me. this is mostly a headcanon i have to get myself through the travesty that is volume 8 and it did make it more enjoyable for me, so i guess that is a plus.

alright, i think i have bored you enough with the unnecessary parts, here we go boys. also, one final thing, this isn’t supposed to undermine shit like part 8 or f//r g//me, or anything of the sort, this was just made as a fun little headcanon that got serious real quick. okay, actually starting now.

I think most RWBY fans have noticed a sudden shift in behavior in Qrow. I don’t really know what the consensus is for this since I hardly, if ever, interact with this fandom, however, for me, until yesterday, it had bothered me heavily. I am a fairly harsh critic when it comes to the writing on the show, purely due to the fact I want to become a writer myself, so I tend to be overly analytical, which can lead to me finding flaws more easily. Nevertheless, even with my mostly neutral feelings regarding Volume 8 right now for various reasons, I persisted. It wasn’t until last night when I really started thinking about this, putting my more critical self aside, and started to look at the bigger picture. Then, an idea had popped into my mind.

Based on someone who has severe trust issues and immense paranoia, I had finally understood, well, at least, theoretically. What if the reason that Qrow is so hostile and, honestly, unreasonable this volume is because he suspected something like this. He suspected Ironwood to do something akin to this. Obviously, not to this severe of a degree, but he felt that like, sooner or later, that this would happen.

What do I mean by this? Well, me and a good friend of mine (@graegrape hi) had gone traversing the RWBY Wikia and found something that honestly kick started the entire thing.

“ General Ironwood shows concern over Qrow's warning in his conversation with Ozpin in "Welcome to Beacon", which prompted him to bring his fleet to Vale in hopes of preventing conflict in the Vytal Festival. However, this action only served to infuriate Qrow. ’’

Naturally, this had caught my eye. So, we went digging for some screencaps.

When Qrow informed Ironwood and Co. about finding some of Salem's forces, Ironwood had deployed, essentially, his entire fleet, and Qrow was absolutely angered by this; how the hell could he have messed it up so badly?

However, at least in this point in time during Volume 3, Qrow doesn’t completely distrust Ironwood.

“ Qrow has commented that he wonders if Ironwood has a heart. Nonetheless, Qrow saves Ironwood from a Griffon in "Heroes and Monsters", knowing the general is innocent of the carnage caused by his automated forces. He shows his respect and loyalty by asking Ironwood for suggestions regarding their plan of action to deal with the invading Grimm, showing that while he may not respect his methods, Qrow does not completely hate him or view him as a threat. ‘’

What was the point of this part of the post, OP? Well, I am happy you asked. I wanted to show just exactly what their dynamic was back in those volumes, almost as a refresher. There is some amount of trust and respect, and there is some amount of comradery there, however, something underlying is starting to brew, specifically Qrow’s reaction to Ironwood’s course of action. My own interpretation of this part? This gave Qrow a proper look at how extreme Ironwood could get, letting it settle in his own mind for a while, making the seed of doubt of Ironwood’s self-destructive behavior plant itself.

The next part of this post will be way more hypothetical. While I will try to provide evidence, this is creeping into more headcanon-ish territory. You have been warned lol.

Well, that’s all of the Volume 2 - 3 stuff out of the way, time to move onto the elephant in the room. Alright, so Volume 7, a favorite for many and I am no exception.

However, even when I have rewatched the Volume at least 3 times at this point, there was a certain scene that had always stuck out to me, and that is relevant to the post at hand, so might as well get it out of the way. I’m sure we all know what I’m talking about here.

The hug.

So, when the hug happened, for Qrow, at least in my own interpretation, it felt like his entire world got shattered.

Ironwood had actually missed him; actually taking the time to tell him that he cared. You could see Qrow wasn’t as tense anymore, actually letting his guard down in front of someone that wasn’t his family. In my opinion, specifally with this frame,

Qrow had started to reflect. To reflect on not only their own relationship, but on himself as well. He, possibly, had his own seed of doubt regarding Ironwood slowly starting to disappear. Something akin to, “Maybe he does have a heart.” or whatever.

And then, Ironwood, of all people, had betrayed him. It had happened again.

Suddenly, he was given a reason, at least in his mind, to justify his distrust of others, but of Ironwood especially. He was right in his mind. “Sooner or later, someone close to me would do this. And to imagine it being to such a severe situation too. He did it again.” Qrow was probably devastated. I’m not denying that he wasn’t sad about Clover, he clearly was and I am not going to deny that fact. However, that being his only reason does not sit well with me. His colleague, one of the remaining people in Ozpin’s group, had done this, after he had promised to ensure his safety, planting a false hope within him. Now, he was thrown away like a rag by one of the only remaining members of Ozpin's circle he could get into proper contact with.

Qrow’s sadness turning into anger is literally perfectly in character to him, so it would make complete sense, trying to deflect everything, because he, himself, wants to be right in his own mind; it was a long time coming, it only happened now.

He’s deflecting a lot of the things, pushing it in the back of his mind. He's scared. He has to be alone again. Just when he thought he was finally safe to trust people again, to seek comfort in someone like Clover, the first person he was willing to spill his heart out to, as well; he lost him. So, he uses everything he can to stop his mind from thinking about it. Anger, sadness, blissful ignorance; whatever he can do to ignore it, because he gave up drinking, so he can't use that for coping anymore.

The reason why he’s reacting so extremely is, in my opinion,is not just due to “Oh, well, I saw this coming.”, but also that he is going through withdrawl. He has to do cope using other methods, since he can’t use his former one anymore. He has to feel the full brunt of his own emotions, he can’t numb them down anymore, and to himself, he can’t justify his own feelings. In his mind, the best course of action is to redirect those extremes onto someone else.

It is quite possibly that Qrow had noticed Ironwood’s sudden shift in behavior, making him reflect on himself, too. He sees that Ironwood is walking down the same path that he himself was going down many years ago, but he can’t do anything. He thinks that Ironwood wouldn’t listen to him, considering what happened back in the Vytal festival. Ironwood did not back down in the slightest back then, so why would he now? That type of mentality. He doesn’t bother with it.

(This next part was written by my good friend and honestly? Great food for thought.)

Qrow’s former emotions mirror those of Ironwood’s current ones. Qrow, back in the earlier volumes, had used alcohol to help ease his mind and block out things he didn’t want to think about. And now, current Ironwood, is only focusing on what’s directly in front of him and blocking out the entirety of Mantle.

In essense, Ironwood had become exactly what he hated about Qrow.

He is deliberately using everything he can to not think about Ironwood, due to the fact that he can easily become irrational when he does, and he does need Robyn as an ally, so he buries it all down, possibly being self-aware about his own behavoir, but not know how to deal with it.

Well, that sure was long. There could be things I forgot to mention, and I’m not even sure if this is well structured or not, since I’m not used to writing essays, at least, not to this caliber, but I hoped it, at least, made you possibly think about Qrow in a more intiment sense. Qrow’s and Ironwood’s relationship had always been the most facsinating one in the entire show, so seeing it being thrown to the side did sting a bit. But, I hope that there was a good reason for it. I am still looking forward to what V8 has in store, especially with the heavily implied fight, I just hope it’s something more than just Qrow getting revenge for Clover. C’mon, CRWBY! I know you can do better.

If you made it this far, thank you. And please understand I made this out of pure love for the show. I have been a fan for a while now and I only want what’s best for the show. I promise this isn’t just me being a salty Ironqrow shipper lmao Anyway, let’s hope this volume turns out great.

Ozqrow Week Day 1: Magic/Technology

(A/N: That's right y'all! I'm doing @ozqrowweek ! My first ship week! Let's see how we do! First up, magic.)

Day 1: Magic

Fandom: RWBY

Ship: Ozpin/Qrow

Synopsis: After a few years of knowing each other, Ozpin finally relents and shows Qrow the potential of his power.

Warning(s): Negative thinking, passing out, and overall the writing is sorta bad. You have been warned.

Two years had passed since Qrow graduated with Team STRQ from Beacon. Two years since he last saw the one person who treated him like he was important, like he wasn't a burden to all those who crossed his path, the person who bestowed upon him the power to turn into an actual crow. The mysterious man who no one ever saw fight, yet he was a proclaimed prodigy. The man who at age 20 was the headmaster of one of the four only huntsmen and huntress academy. That man was Professor Ozpin of Beacon Academy. He had power, and Qrow wanted to know what that power was.

Now, he when this thought passed through his head, he left it alone. It would be rude to invade the privacy of the only person he was sure cared about him, but over time, curiousity was getting the better of him. He just had to know. So, one night after returning from a mission, he headed over to Ozpin's office where he would most likely would be- and was-stressing over applications, upcoming entrance exams and what have you.

At first, he didn't notice the avain man enter, or walk across the floor until he felt someone's hand ruffle his already messy hair. He looked up, his hazel eyes meeting Qrow's. He smiled, tired.

"Welcome back," he said, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

"I'd feel a little more welcomed if the welcome party was a little more awake."

"You're asking too much of me, Qrow. Too much."

Qrow chuckled, running his fingers through Ozpin's hair once more before collapsing into the chair in front of his desk. Ozpin smiled, fixing his hair a bit.

"I thought you'd be home by now. It is quite late."

"You know I don't got anybody waiting for me. Plus...I wanted to ask you something. It's been on my mind for a while now."

Ozpin quickly glanced up at him, "Oh? And what would that be?"

Qrow took a very deep breath, "Oz...we've known each other for a while now and...I want you to show me."

"Show you what?"

"Show me what you can do. Show what your powers are."

Ozpin froze, papers still in hand. He leaned back in his chair, staring at him, almost horrified. Qrow stood up, "Look, you don't have to if you don't want to, but I just-I want to know. I want to-"

"I'll do it."

Qrow stared in shock at the young wizard. Did he actually say yes?

"You...you will?"

Ozpin nodded, standing up from the desk. "I will. We've know each other for a considerable amount of time and...I want you to trust me."

Qrow's heart swelled a bit. He was really going to do it. Just so he can asure Qrow that could trust him.

Holy shit.

The young wizard walked over to his coffee table, rearranging things so he wouldn't cause too much damage to the room. "I advise you to stand back. I wouldn't want you getting hurt."

Qrow nodded, simply watching from his seat. Ozpin rolled up his sleeves, revealing odd scars that Qrow had never seen before. He shut his eyes tightly, his hands out in front of him. He started to glow a bright yellowish-green, levitating off the floor.

Qrow gripped the arm rest of the chair. Ozpin was enveloped in a green ball of light, fully off the ground and his eyes glowing gold. His gaze remained on Qrow, who was in complete and utter awe. It was somewhat amusing.

That was until Ozma's voice came into his head.

Ozma was a worrier. That's something Ozpin picked up on immediately after he first appeared. He was always worried about something, mainly things related to Salem, which was perfectly understandable.

But sometimes, he would crawl into Ozpin's thoughts, misleading him, makimg him over think. Out of the many voices in his head, his was the loudest.

And it was in his head, right now.

' You need to stop! You're going to hurt him!'

"I'm much more skilled than you think." Ozpin muttered.

'if you really care about him, you will stop!'

"I can control myself-"

'these are my powers. I can cut you off myself. Oz, I care about you too much to watch you hurt the one you love!'

Ozma's voice just kept swirling around in his head, distracting him from keeping his magic under control.

'I'm going to hurt him, I'm not going to hurt him, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not!'

Ozpin felt a sharp pain in his side, the magic surrounding him disapatting as he fell to the ground, his vision hazy.

"OZ!" Qrow cried, jumping out of his seat and running to him.

"I-I'm fine, Qrow..." Ozpin wheezed, his vision blurry.

"Bullshit." Qrow muttered, lifting the light headmaster onto the couch and resting his head against a throw pillow.

"Qrow-"

"Oz, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked, I-"

"No, Qrow. Don't. I...I was just too distracted. I didn't want to hurt you." Ozpin weakly reached out and cupped Qrow's cheek, caressing it lightly with his thumb before losing consciousness, his hands falling limp.

Qrow's heart lept into his throat as he was about to try and shake him awake again before he saw his chest slowly rise and fall. He sighed in relief, holding Ozpin's hand as he watched him sleep.

He stayed there the whole night to make sure that Ozpin would be okay by morning.

And thankfully, he was.

Sundays Are the Best

You were always looking forward to Sundays. Some people looked forward to Fridays for the end of the work week, some towards Saturdays for their first real day off, and even a few who loved their jobs and were excited for Mondays to roll back around.

Really, you were just happy for Sundays because it's the only day of the week where both you and Pyrrha have the day off and could just cuddle in bed. You enjoyed the sensation of her soft, warm body pressed against yours, your arms wrapped around her and the flat, toned muscles of her stomach and brushing gently against the underside of her breasts with every shift the two of you make.

Blake and Yang's friendship.

WARNING: If you ship them, don't bother reading this. You're not gonna like what I have to say. Don't waste your time on my opinions, just move along and enjoy your day :) Also, spoilers ahead.

Blake and Yang are a pair of unlikely friends. Blake coming from an important family in the faunus community and fighting for equality all her life. Yang from a simple, but emotionally complicated childhood. Despite their differences, they become great friends.

Volume 1:

We get introduced to all our characters and get a sense of what they're like. Yang started out as super upbeat and happy. She was always smiling and ready for action. Blake was quiet and very sarcastic. She had just ran away from the White Fang and Adam, so making friends was the last thing on her mind. At first Yang doesn't really like Blake. She says, "this girl's a lost cause". Blake didn't care much for anyone. She was only annoyed by Ruby, Weiss, and Yang. The Emerald Forest is where that changes. Blake and Yang make eye contact and become partners. The fight with the Nevermore Grimm really solidified their compatibility, along with Ruby and Weiss. They all get along just fine, until the team finds out Blake is a former member of the White Fang. Yang didn't seem to be bothered by it, she's actually really accepting and tries to get Weiss to be more sympathetic. Blake decides to let her walls down just a few bricks, but it's progress.

Volume 2:

This is the volume where Team RWBY really bonds. Blake is bothered that Torchwick is still out there, and she convinces the team to go after him. After a failed attempt, she remains obsessed with catching him. Yang can see how much her search is consuming her, so she sits down and has a talk with her. Yang opens up to Blake about her mother and how she was once consumed by looking for her. She almost got Ruby and herself killed, and after that, she never wanted to make the same mistake again. She cares for Blake and doesn't want her to go down the same path of self destruction she did. She tells her that it won't only hurt her, but it will hurt the people she cares about. She gives her a big hug and urges her to get some rest and to even come to the dance. Blake can see that Yang cares for her well being, so she listens and takes a cat nap. She even takes Sun up on his offer and they go to the dance together. The whole team was a great night. Ruby even got to chase a villain instead of dancing. The second time they go after Torchwick, they're successful in capturing him. The team feels super happy with their work as Huntresses, and all ends well.

Volume 3:

We all know what goes down here. The volume starts with Team RWBY in the Tournament. They win the match and things couldn't be better. They are super confident in their skills and think they saved the day now that Torchwick’s locked up. This is not the case. After Yang breaks Mercury's leg, the team is shaken. Emerald used her semblance on Yang to get her to hit Mercury, so Yang was just trying to defend herself, but to the rest of Remnant, she attacked him. Ruby and Weiss believe Yang, but Blake is skeptical. To her, it’s a similar situation like with Adam. She trusted him and he slowly turned into a blood thirsty murderer. She doesn't want to stand by and watch it happen again to someone else she cares for. Yang is hurt that Blake doesn't trust her and she cries. Blake tells her to look her in the eyes and swear it was a one time mistake. Yang sternly replies, "I saw him attack me, do I attacked back". Blake knows that she means it, so he trusts her.

Now here comes the trauma. Buckle up kiddos. All things have gone to Hell at Beacon. The White Fang invades the school and Cinder stirs up everyone and it attracts a bunch of grimm. Yang is somewhere fighting, but Blake runs into Adam. She sees him kill a man and she wants nothing more than to run. As he gets ready to kill another, she jumps in and saves them. She tries to fight, but she's too frightened, and Adam gets the upper hand. Yang was near by trying to find her, and sees Adam stab Blake. She's beyond angry, and goes to save her, but Adam slices her arm off. He goes in to finish her, but Blake jumps in between them, and he almost decapitated her, but she used her semblance so they could escape. Blake feels so guilty about what happened. She thinks it's her fault for getting close too Yang that this happened. So after she makes sure everyone's okay, she runs. Yang is no longer a happy smiling girl. She's bitter and angry, she doesn't care why Blake ran, all she knows is someone else she cared about left her when she needed them. Team RWBY is split apart across Remnant, and their lives are forever changed.

Volume 4:

Blake is headed home to Menagerie. Adam vowed to "destroy everything she loves" and she knows he means it. She doesn't want to see anyone else get hurt for her sake, and decides home is the safest place for her. Sun follows her because he thinks she's going to take on the White Fang, but stays with her to support her. The last time she saw her parents, she was angry and called them cowards, but she receives a warm welcome when she returns. Yang is also at home, but she's not happy. Yang is depressed and traumatized. Ruby's gone, so it's just her and her dad. Yang has a lot of time to think, and she thinks Blake abandoned her. Yang already has abandonment issues because of her mother leaving and losing Summer Rose. She doesn't care if she ever sees Blake again. Not because she lost her arm, but because she left. After Sun gets stabbed by Ilia from protecting Blake, she's once again angry at herself for getting someone else hurt. Sun reassures her that he did it out of his own free will because he cares for her, and he tells her that Yang would say the same thing. Blake understands and loosens up. After a few months of getting back on her feet, Yang is armed and ready, so she goes after Ruby.

Volume 5:

The girls are starting to get their spark back. They are on different paths, but they all lead to the same destination, Haven Academy in Mistral. Blake, Sun and her family learn of a plot to destroy Haven, so they make plans to stop it. Yang finds her mother, and coincidentally, Weiss. Yang forces Raven to take her to Qrow so she can be with Ruby. Raven reluctantly let's her go and Ruby, Weiss, and Yang have a touching reunion. The next morning, Ruby says she wishes Blake was there with them. Yang is triggered and says, "Well, she could've been here if she just stuck around. It's no big deal, though". Yang still resents her for leaving. Later, when Weiss tries to talk to her, Yang says she never blamed Blake for anything, she just needed her there to help her through the toughest part of her life. Weiss reassures Yang that she'll be back one day, and she's right. At Haven, Blake is outside facing Adam. She yeets him good, but sees Hazel get impaled by a giant white Lancer. She goes to check it out, and sees Ruby, Weiss, and Yang. All she says is, "......Yang?" Yang is very surprised, but the moment doesn't last long because the Relic is in danger. After all is said in done, Sun sees Blake's teammates and pushes her to go talk to them. She approaches nervously not knowing what to expect. She still feels guilty for leaving the way she did, you can see it on her face and her ears that she's expecting negative welcome. However, Yang smiles and is glad that everyone is back together. Team RWBY have the most satisfying group hug and enjoy each others company.

Volume 6 (so far):

Now that everyone's back together, Sun decides to go back with his team to let Blake work the rest of her issues out, but reassures her she'll see him again. He also knows she’s happiest when she’s with her team. Yang is back to smiling and having fun. On the train, however, Blake tries to be unnecessarily helpful to Yang like she needs assistance. She still feels guilty for causing Yang to lose her arm. She tells her that she's fine and that it's good to be back together. It's a nice moment, until some grimm rudely interrupt everything. Everyone fights in sync with each other just like old times and they kill all the grimm, but get separated from Jean, Nora, and Ren. Now they're stranded in a snowy forest with a Relic that is a Grimm magnet. They're gonna have to stick together if they're going to get to Atlas. Blake and Yang still have a ways to go before things are normal, but they will no doubt work through it.

Only the first episode is out at this point in time, so I might come back and add some things as the volume progresses. I predict that Adam is going to show up. Yang is going to be furious to see him again, and Adam is going to be even more furious to see Blake. There's probably going to be a huge fight and who knows what will happen.

Why I don't ship them:

I watched RWBY for the first time about a year ago, so from Volume 1 to the beginning of Volume 5. I didn't see any romantic connection between them at all. There was nothing there to show me that they were in love. I'm confused as to why people freak out anytime Blake and Yang are on the screen together and have any kind of interaction. For example, Yang looks at Blake and someone will say, "Omg did you see the way they looked at each other?! They're so in love"!! I just don't get it. I love both of these characters and their friendship is very important, but it's often overlooked. People are so focused on trying to gasp at straws to prove that there's some kind of feelings of love that just aren't there instead of looking at the reality of this fantasy series. If more people could stop and just appreciate their beautiful friendship, that would be amazing. Not everything's a love story. Somethings are about a group of friends trying to save the world.

I know people can ship what they want, and that's okay, but this fandom can be toxic at times because of all the shipping salt. I know not all shippers are like that, but those who are ruin it for the rest of us. I know others feel the same way I do, and this post is for you.

RWBY & Meaning in Cinematic Techniques, Part 2 - Volume 5′s Merits

If there was anything to take away from part one of this blog article series, it would hopefully be that RWBY has more going on with its visuals than just being prettier through an upgrade in animation software. Since volume 3, various scenes centered on various characters have used a combination of stage direction, camera framing, and even interesting use of transitioning shots to better depict the subtext behind one’s thoughts and intentions or at the very least be left open to interpretation. But so far, only examples through volume 4 of the long-running web series have been referred to. This then brings into question what about the cinematography of volume 5?

To say that the fifth volume of RWBY’s story had faced a large number of criticisms within its fanbase would be an understatement. Since even before it ended and the hiatus started, more people have poured out their frustrations and disappointments on a regular basis through Youtube videos and threads on forums and the RWBY sub-reddit. It’s gotten to the point that after lots of back-and-forth flinging of arguments regarding whether the director and writer, Kerry Shawcross and Miles Luna respectively, should be criticized harshly or not, has just utterly exhausted some fans. To be vividly clear, the goal of this blog article is not to be the end-all-be-all counter-argument that shuts down what has been uttered by critics. Nor is it meant to even imply that volume 5 is void of flaws. Rather, the intent is simply to help shift and refresh the discussion about volume 5 by centering on how its application of cinematography is one of its merits.

With that said, in what ways did volume 5 apply cinematic techniques? The answer to that actually depends on the character. To start, let’s refer to the chameleon-based faunus character, Ilia Amitola and her scenes with Blake. Ilia has a strong, yet misguided sense of justice where she believes in needing to be as aggressive as possible. In shots with her and Blake in volume 5, she positions herself at a greater height which makes sense considering she’s actually shorter than Blake. Even the volume 5 opening theme featuring their bout illustrates this. While opening themes in anime are generally known to excite viewers into a title they’re about to watch, they can also tease a story and its layers through snappy camera shots and imagery. To see how true this usually is, I highly suggest watching Geoff Thew, a.k.a, Mother’s Basement’s “What’s in an OP” video series on Youtube, who has provided thorough analysis on openings to anime like Death Note, both Fullmetal Alchemist series, Re:Zero, Spice & Wolf, Your Name, and the seasons of My Hero Academia to name a few.

Switching gears back to Blake and Ilia’s scenes in RWBY, the latter believed that fear is the only way to gain results and by standing taller than the former, Ilia’s ideals are seemingly stronger. But when Blake manages to finally pin Ilia down in their fight in chapter 10, Blake hammers as much sense into Ilia as she could and gets her to admit that she doesn’t know any other alternative.

With all that said, there’s another trait at play between Blake and Ilia’s scenes that needs to be mentioned. To do that, we need to first talk about a department in RWBY’s production that, like camera & layout, was also established since volume 3: the lighting team. In volumes 1 & 2, every scene with some attempt at lighting and shadow was actually faked, as there were no lighting artists yet. Even the scene between Roman Torchiwck and James Ironwood in chapter 12 of volume 2 had animator, Austin Hardwicke, use a trick in Poser to fake the shadow in Torchwick’s prison cell. But by volume 3, a lighting artist named Erica Burroughs was recruited to provide the rays of sunlight the lighting of green flames from the torches in the Beacon Academy vault, among other moments of lighting effects. By volume 4, a single lighting artist evolved to a whole team with Mark Osborne credited as the lead lighting artist. This helped contribute to making scenes more enticing to look at with each passing volume. Even volume 5 introduced a rim shot lighting on characters, which depending on the setting, such an accent can add to giving RWBY a more enticing aesthetic.

Lighting doesn’t just help make the show prettier-looking though. Depending on the context, it can also help better communicate the story visually-speaking. And Blake and Ilia’s scenes are the biggest examples of this. It goes without saying that the color black is Blake’s motif. But it can also extend to how the color represents her story arc when associated with lighting or rather lack thereof. Every scene where Blake confronts against the White Fang in previous volumes have been in settings with lack of light, be it in the middle of the night or underground at Mountain Glenn. In volume 4 though, lighting as a visual story element provides an interesting twist to scenes with her parents, being either in broad daylight or in a bright, warmly-lit room. With Blake, there’s this awkwardness when communicating with her parents, as welcoming and forgiving as Ghira and Kali are. In chapter 8, she hesitantly stays stares the outside of her father’s office in the dark, only to hesitantly step in and eventually pour out her deep guilt towards her father. She wants to be more open in the light, but is far too scared to.

The motif of light and darkness can also apply in relation to Sun Wukong. In chapter 3 of volume 4, Blake refused to explain why she kept distance from everyone including her teammates at a scene at night. But in chapter 11, not only is she forced to admit her reason after Sun got injured in the daytime, but the latter in response criticizes her way of going about her problems. This is complimented by some framing between the two and the large Menagerie painting in the background. What all of this has to do with Blake and Ilia is that the former in volume 5 is framed to be associated with bright and natural lights while the latter is associated with darkness and shadows. One of the major exceptions to this is in both character’s speeches in chapters 3 & 10, providing an interesting contrast. Ilia in chapter 3 is vocally fighting in Blake’s domain in broad daylight whereas Blake in chapter 10 argues back with her own speech in Ilia’s domain at night.

Though Blake and Ilia’s scenes were greatly emphasized by certain cinematic techniques, their characters weren’t the only ones with scenes affected in that sense. Other characters throughout the volume had techniques applied to their scenes to varying degrees and Ruby Rose was one of them. It’s not a secret that the inconsistent focus of the main protagonist of this web series has fueled the fandom’s frustrations this volume. And while the following can’t alleviate it, her scene with Oscar in chapter 5 is worth mentioning. It’s minor, but when Ruby is given the time to explain her optimistic demeanor to Oscar, there’s an interesting framing with her and the interior. In certain shots, she’s seen surrounded by the entrance to the training room where the outside is nothing but forests at night. The forest setting, especially at night, is a recurring setting with Ruby’s character as made evident in both her character short and in the volume 5 opening. But it’s also a setting with meaning regarding the story of the character she’s inspired by. One interpretation of a few variations of the Little Red Riding Hood story is that the forest serves as part of the character of the same name’s transition from childhood to adulthood, partly due to the forest being unknown and potentially dangerous territory.

What Ruby expresses to Oscar about what she’s afraid of can also be a callback to Oscar expressing to Ozpin how scary it is venturing out on his own in the forest for a cause beyond his comprehension. But where he has struggled to overcome his anxiety, Ruby has a firm-enough grip of it to stay motivated on her objective. The framing between her and the open entrance with the forest in the background, while just one simple cinematic technique, is also arguably effective at helping present Ruby’s mindset. The training room scene is also a good opportunity to talk about cinematography applied to Oscar’s scenes. In volume 4, chapter 7, his scene made him treat Ozpin as an invader of his mind and livelihood. The shades of brown and red and dim lighting makes Oscar feel utterly disturbed, overwhelmed, and unwilling to accept Ozpin’s words. But their scene in chapter 5 changes that. The interior in comparison is much brighter, bigger, and even with more shades of green, which is representative of Ozpin’s color motif. As a result, he no longer feels mentally tense by Ozpin’s presence and even trusts him for a little insight.

There’s also another small scene with Oscar in chapter 11 of volume 5, where he faces Leonardo Lionheart. Although brief, there’s an instance where as he steps up, the camera is framing him at a low angle, indicating that he’s more resolute. The motivation itself could be due to either slowly accepting his role in the story or to follow Ruby’s example. Speaking of Oscar and Lionheart’s face-off, now is where the latter’s scenes can be visually deciphered. The Haven academy headmaster has certain scenes that support the Cowardly Lion theme that he alludes to. In earlier-mentioned scene, Lionheart expresses his intentions after realizing that Ozpin had already been reincarnated. Note the long, overhead shot followed by a closer overhead shot of Lionheart looking up. The camera is utilized the same, exact way as with Tyrian’s Callows’s shots in volume 4 of chapter 7 . This is not necessarily coincidental when you consider who both of them refer to: Salem. Despite not much yet being known about her, the camera communicates how both Tyrian and Lionheart see Salem, albeit for nuanced reasons. To them, Salem is omnipotent and even omnipresent, and her will and desires are absolute, which leads to them expressing how they share the need to please her.

Next is the matter of Yang and Weiss’s scene in chapter 8. What makes this scene fascinating is how it combines two other scenes in past volumes. The first is Blake and Yang’s scene in chapter 6 of volume 2 and the other is Team RWBY’s dorm room scene in chapter 8 of volume 3. One applies a similar daylight lighting while the other frames the beds and initially, the two characters the same way. This helps indicate the shifting of roles with Yang and Weiss’s characters. Yang goes from being the one needing to get through to Blake by explaining a piece of her backstory to being the one who needs to be emotionally connected through by Weiss about Blake through her own backstory. Meanwhile, Weiss went from being negatively knee-jerk reactive to Blake’s hesitantly believing Yang in the dorm room scene to be more comforting and concerning in response to Yang’s prior overreaction.

The last character to highlight who has been associated with her own set of cinematic techniques in volume 5 is Raven Branwen, specifically in scenes she shares with Yang. In their scenes, a few techniques come to mind. The first is of shots where Raven faces the camera when she talks about Qrow, Ozpin, and Salem in chapters four, six, & fourteen. She puts on a very serious expression to the viewer, but doesn’t face her own daughter in these instances. By itself, these shots may not mean much. But if they were to be complimented by another technique, the medium shots of Raven and Yang facing each other in two of the same chapters, then there’s more depth behind her character.

In chapter 6, Raven faces Yang eye-to-eye and then stoically turns her back towards her. But in chapter 14, Raven submissively let’s Yang walk past her while being shoved aside. Between these shots and the previous sets mentioned, this suggests that Raven has been too unwilling to admit her fears to herself and to her daughter. In turn, Yang expresses the willingness to confront her mother’s arguments and be strong the way she could not. But there’s also a layer of frustration underneath with Yang. While the phrase, “mother of the year” is appropriate to sarcastically describe Raven, bear in mind that she’s a character whose mystery has lingered in Yang’s mind since she was a child. She had very vague ideas of why her blood mother would leave her family. As much as she hardly respects someone like that, she can’t help but want to better comprehend such a character. When Raven does finally accept that she’s too scared to face the Salem’s overwhelming presence, she let’s Yang shove past her and weeps a tear, apologizing over how flawed she has been before continuing to do so as she flees.

Viewers may respond with, “good riddance”, but the above shot depicts a different response. When Yang turns around after hearing her Mom flee, all she sees is a feather drifting down. With the opened door to Spring Maiden vault framed to be behind her the way it is, it shows that Yang is immediately feeling isolated. The anger and frustration she harbored has been converted to depression. Yang by this point now knows everything she needs to know about her mom. Raven admits she’s a coward, but she’s also too much of one to properly stay by her daughter’s side, which makes Yang feel isolated and thus saddened that this is the reality.

All in all, volume 5 has managed to carry on the matter of using cinematic techniques in various ways as volume 4 did. As said before, none of these examples are expected to sway an entire fandom’s response to RWBY’s most current volume as of the time this blog article is posted. But hopefully after reading all of this, some credit can be given where it’s due of how one aspect of the show’s production and presentation has been given more thought and attention over time. Here is also hoping that said-aspect will be maintained in future volumes.
