putting my thoughts together... looking back, the whole "raven left, and summer and tai got together because summer was there for him. then ruby sort of happened as a result of that" never really sat right with me.
Tumblr media
and with this scene it does so even less.
i kinda expected them to kiss farewell, you know, having thought of them as being together for the past *checks watch* 8 years? but... they hugged.
to me, it makes me think they are together because the two of them are raising Raven's kids. Together, but not together-together, yknow?
Tumblr media
it does feel like raven's words here aren't just because of summer leaving yang.
"what about... you're just gonna leave them?"
"you're one to talk"
Them. not just yang. them. And since Ruby's just far too similar to Summer to say that she's Raven's and Tai's... yeah. I wanna believe that she's Rosebird's daughter.

Ruby:We need to figure out a plan to get ahead.
Oz:Call your dad so he can meet Cinder. He can’t fix toxic women but he can distract them for a considerable amount of time. Throw them off their game even.
Ruby:…
Yang:….
Raven:I don’t care you’re right. You might actually be a villain for that one. Put Oscar back in the room before we have problems.
Ruby:*calling Tai* Think the signal is strong enough?
Raven:Do not call your father ! Especially with me h-
Tai:Pretty Bird?
Raven: Hi Tai-Dye ✨
Yang:*covers mouth* Ooooooh my gooood!
Raven:Shush.

Thinking about RWBY as my hyperfixation wears off and I think, as with all fairy tales, there’s a moral, of course. And I think RWBY’s is this:
“You are who you choose to be.”
Blake chose not to be the monster.
Adam chose to be the monster.
Weiss chose not to be like her father.
Jacques chose to be a miserly weasel to the end.
Raven chose not to be a mother. Summer chose to be Yang’s mother. And Yang chose to be the mom Ruby couldn’t have.
Qrow chose to be a drunk and bitter.
Emerald chose to be a bad guy, but she also chose to leave that behind when confronted about it.
Ironwood chose to be a bad guy and doubled-down when confronted about it.
Penny chose to be more human than most and chose to die a hero.
Cinder chose to let her past define her and to lash out against the world.
Trivia chose to become Neopolitan and again chose to become someone else when she realized that wasn’t who she needed to be.
Ruby was forced to be the hero before she was ready but chose to be that hero even when given an out.
Ozma chose to be the white knight, believing himself to be the only one able to save the world.
Salem chose to be the witch, looking to destroy the world.
I think, truly, no one is beyond redemption if they truly want it and are willing to work for it. We’re all victims of circumstance, but we choose our paths and who we are. We can blame the world for our problems, but we should never let our problems define us. You choose who you want to be.

Tai Yang Xiao Long
is not a shit parent.
A shit parent doesn't love or take care of their kids. A shit parent fobs them off onto someone else. A shit parent runs from their family just as their daughter is born. A shit parent abuses, gaslights, and torments their kid.
Just because Tai isn't the best at helping Yang or Ruby with trauma, which doesn't exactly come in a parenting class or anything, and because of the problems in the past doesn't mean he's not there right now.
And I'm tired of people saying that he's a bad parent, when RWBY has PLENTY of examples of bad parents.
Raven walked out on their family. Marcus Black was practically Cassandra Caining Mercury. Jacques is...Jacques, needs no explanation. Lady Tremaine/Cinder's wicked adoptive mom literally electroshocked Cinder. The Vanille's were, by and large, only interested in Trivia/Neo as more of a status symbol then a kid IIRC or at least didn't treat her too well either.
Tai and Willow may have the problem of 'neglected their kids in a critical juncture of their lives', but I've seen too much Tai hate to let that go. Nobody appears to be jumping on Willow for getting drunk at every opportunity, nor Qrow's on and off visits or drinking problems likewise despite that coming in bad ways.
Nobody appears to actually think of Raven coming in only when Yang was close to death as a black mark on her record as a parent.
Did Tai screw up when Yang and Ruby were young? Sure. Is he still there and still trying? YES. And I, for one, massively prefer Tai over Raven as far as parenting Yang and Ruby goes. He was a much better parent to Yang then Raven was, and yet some fans treat Raven with kid gloves and reserve the sledgehammer for Tai?!
~
Okay, maybe I should confess that the reason I feel so strongly about this is that I relate to that. Not the whole 'emotionally distant parent' thing, but the 'raised by a single parent when the other one left' thing. Yes, Tai messed up in the past and that messed up Yang quite a bit. It's not as much as Raven leaving did, but it does deserve criticism. Not an explosion, however, we got that with the Raven confrontation(s) in V5.
Again. I prefer a parent who tries at the very least, and this includes Willow too, to a parent who walks away or actively abuses their kid.
For Grade A parenting (genuine) in RWBY though? The Belladonnas, Pietro, and Ren's folks come to mind. Heck, Saphron and Terra and possibly Jaune's parents too if we ever get to see them?
TL;DR: No, I don't think Tai is a shit father or the "third worst parent" as a mutual described him. There are far worse in RWBY than Tai, and that's the truth. I'm not saying he did nothing wrong ever, I'm saying people are being way too harsh on him.

To the RWBY Fandom
Hi! I'm relatively new to the fandom and I'm looking for RWBY fan artists to follow, so if you are one let me know! I'd like to see all the amazing stuff y'all have created, especially positive/happy stuff since for me I get enough angst from the show itself. 😅

I wonder how much of v10’s focus will be on family thematically. They’ve certainly laid the groundwork for it in v9
A Rose-Xiao Long-Branwen family reunion feels imminent, I’m not even going to go into how much there is to unpack there, that’s a separate post in itself
Ghira and Kali reuniting with Blake (again) getting to see how much she’s flourished since the last time they saw her. Getting to meet Yang in particular but also the rest of her team
Willow, Winter, and Whitley finding out Weiss is alive! Rebuilding their relationships with each other like they had started to in v7/8 now that Jacques is no longer in the picture (also another topic that could be its own post)
The Brothers themselves now that their true origin has been revealed. Their (the god of light’s really) hypocritical demand to unite Remnant or else we’ll nuke your planet again. They haven’t actually been united themselves this whole time though
Team rwby - not friends. Family - being implied by the Blacksmith to be a representation of true balance through their love for each other

bro if one of the RWBY beyond episodes is fucking Tai just, dealing with his grief? Like learning to stand up again and live, like him dealing with what happened to his kids and his depression? Just him existing and crying and learning how to live again? I’m going to go off line and sob. because they could! They so could it’s about exploring story’s untold and how what happened effected them, it could be an episode of Tai reminiscing on his life and choices we could get Team STRQ lore, we could get teased with the crown!

At the end of Volume 9 we had a bit of a time skip
this means there might have been enough time for everyone to accept RWBY + J being dead
imagine Winter having to tell Willow and Whitley that she watched Weiss fall
imagine Ren and Nora having to come to terms with no only half their team gone but almost all of their remaining friends, its just the 2 of them left again
imagine Qrow having to tell Tai that both of his daughters died on his watch
Blakes parents finding our that their daughter, who they basically just got back, will never return home
and now imagine the absolute heart wrenching reunions between all of them
personally i wanna see Winter be so relieved that she starts sobbing, but that's just me

The next verse the same as the first because defenses I've seen for Tai have been very poor and they pretty much all say the same thing.
"He loves his daughters, so Yang's neglect and parentification can't have been abusive."
Like, no sorry, that's exactly what it was, you can love someone till the moon and back and genuinely not mean them any harm and still do incredible harm. Speaking from personal experience it doesn’t have to have been intentional to have been abusive, just like Parentification.
I would also note that Willow Schnee certainly doesn't get any "She loves her kids" considerations for her neglect, which is the exact same type of abuse Tai put Yang and Ruby through regardless of whether he meant to or not.
Tai can love his daughters and still have done harm to them and frankly I think its rather important to remember that abuse comes in many forms and from many types of people, not all of them someone whose consciously trying to do harm.
So yeah, neglecting your children to the point where the eldest has to take on the duties of raising the younger one and keeping the family together? An abusive situation no matter how much love is there, cos love isn't the same thing as actually parenting.
Oh and the other excuse is "He was grieving, be nice" and like, grief isn’t an excuse, Tai doesn’t consider it an excuse, dismissing Yang’s trauma & depression as moping. Only promising to give Yang support when she stops doing it. Oh and for all the ‘Tai was grieving' defenses, so were his two very young children!

Blake:*leads revolution army*
Yang:*a fighter since birth*
Principal:Are you aware why I called you in about your daughter?
……
Blake and Yang:We have ideas.
xxxxx
Yang:Why did you drop kick her!?
Lil Veronica:She said I had fleas…
Yang:Put gum in her hair.
Blake:YANG!
Yang:I mean use your words sweetie.
Veronica:To hurt her back?
Blake:….*dials phone*
Kali:Hello?
Blake:How do you stand up for yourself against a bully without going overboard and not looking weak?
Kali:You are a civil rights leader.
Blake:Kids are a whole different beast okay!?
Yang:*also on the phone* I need answers!
Tai:She already beat them up. Just have her flex at them and say “shut up”
Yang:I wasn’t that aggressive was I?
Tai:You were worse.

Jaune: (sigh)
Yang: What's wrong lover-boy.
Jaune: Just thinking about the downsides of eating a clock.
Yang: Uh...why would you eat a clock?
Jaune: I don't know it seems pretty time-consuming... 😉
Yang: ...
Jaune: 😊😊😊
Tai: He has my blessing.
Jaune: 😱 Where did you come from!?
Tai: That's my secret...though I should be the least of your worries...you have a dragon to tame.
Jaune could barely get a word in before he was wrapped in a bear hug and carried to the room he and Yang were sharing.
Yang: DO NOT DISTURB OR FACE THE WRATH OF THIS DRAGON.
With that, she slammed the door shut with Jaune and her on the other side.
Some say Jaune's pelvis shattered five times that day, and others say Yangs moans could be heard all across patch for 24 hours straight.
