10 characters 10 fandoms
I was tagged by @salsedine ages ago (thank you! 👋🥰) and finally getting around to it!
So these are in no particular order even though they're numbered, but here we go:
1. Leonard McCoy from Star Trek: The Original Series
I love his gruff exterior coupled with how much he cares really deeply. He's passionate and full of fire, but he's also so compassionate and caring. He's a healer, but instead of embodying the "saint-like" version of that trope, he's all too human and flawed. I adore him.
Tumblr media
2. Joan Watson and Sherlock Holmes from Elementary
Yes, I am cheating, but they are sold as a set do not separate 🤷
I just love both of them. I love the way they interact, and their partnership in every sense of the word. They're funky and unapologetic about it, and they can be sharp and vindictive, but they can also be so, so soft and caring, both to each other and to others.
Tumblr media
3. Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones
He's slick and snarky and talented. He's in a nasty codependent romance with his sister. He's incredibly insecure yet incredibly cocky. He's so so brave and stupid. He's in love with Brienne and shows it by giving her a sword. He's a hot mess. Just a complete disaster of a human. I love it. I want to study him in a jar.
Tumblr media
4. Sam from Lord of the Rings
He's a cinnamon roll, does this need more explanation? 🤷
Tumblr media
5. Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec
She never, ever gives up, and she believes so hard in making the world a better place, and she loves her friends so much, and.... She's just inspiring. She's a character who gives me energy and makes me feel like things can get better and good people can make a difference.
Tumblr media
6. Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit
My boy 🥹 He is fierce and loyal and cunning, and he's got a temper and can somehow get away with scolding people twice his size. The bitch energy is at epic levels, and yet he's also somehow so caring. He is an icon, a legend. We can only aspire to such sass and love as is packed in this tiny man.
Tumblr media
7. Basil from The Great Mouse Detective
He's ridiculously cute and smart. I love how he pretty much adopted Dawson as His within like 5 seconds of meeting him. He's also a secret softie, getting all testy with Olivia only to pretty much immediately cave when she starts crying. Plus he's Sherlock Holmes as a mouse. Only wins here.
Tumblr media
8. Richard from Galavant
He's a pathetic noodle of a man who's committed horrible atrocities by his own admission, yet he still manages to make you want to give him a hug. What a disaster man. I adore him.
Tumblr media
9. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park/World
He's got a PhD but can't figure out a seat belt. He's clearly madly in love with Ellie but takes like 30 years to admit that he'd rather have her than his career. Yet again, a complete disaster. Are you sensing a pattern?
Tumblr media
10. Bek from Gods of Egypt
Yes, I know this movie has problems, first and foremost the whitewashing, but I can't help it 🙈 Bek in particular is just 👌 He's so determined and spunky. He says cheesy one-liners to himself while stealing from literal gods. He's blasphemous to the gods' faces. The love of his life is killed and his immediate response is to blackmail a god into bringing her back to life. He's lucky and brash. I love him.
Tumblr media

Since Yuu is British in the House of Mouse, how do they interact with the British Disney villains?
TEA! TEA! TEA!
As an enjoyer of the beverage myself, I'm going to say that they all drink tea together.
Since Professor Ratigan is a rodent version of Professor James Moriarty (and Basil literally lives with Sherlock Holmes), he's obviously Victorian. And Clayton is as well, seeing that Tarzan is set in the 1880/1890s-ish. I think Yuu would be fascinated to know more about life back then (the Victorian Era is personally my favourite period - right before Hanoverian (in this house we love and appreciate Jane Austen) and Stuart). Like they'd discuss Jack the Ripper and how useless the Scotland Yard was and how The Times is still a highly successful newspaper and how technology and transportation has made advancements since the industrial revolution. I just want to sit down and have an intelligent conversation with Ratigan. Like Maleficent and Queen Grimhilde, everything about him just screams intellectual elegance.
Captain Hook is Scottish but I don't know enough about his origin story before he was a pirate to write about him.
Governor Ratcliffe can go die in a burning ditch.
Cruella would be a blast to hang out with. Yuu would tell her about the current London fashion houses and how styles have changed. Cruella's a rich heiress that lives in a fancy mansion in England so she definitely lived the high life. 101 Dalmations takes place in the 1950s so she'd be interested to see how times have changed and again, Yuu would like to learn more about life back then.
Prince John gets bullied by all the other villains over how weak and pathetic he is (don't get me into how much Scar and Leona like to rip into him being the disappointment of a species and how natural selection is coming for him). Yuu doesn't join in on the bullying but she thinks he kind of deserves it for taxing the poor like that (also, she's friends with Robin Hood so there's that). She does feel sorry for Sir Hiss though so she just lets him wrap his coils around her shoulders and pats his scales as she avoids Kaa's gaze.
They'll definitely have discussions about British traditions like bonfire night and they'll just make her feel more at home.

i know u asked for sherlock and iris for the character relationshjips ask game SO if someone else hasnt sent them yet do them but i want to hear you ramble abotu homumiko also. [holding you at gunpoint]
as you know i got a homumiko ask already but everyone look at it again “basil its long and incomprehensible and most of your followers dont even really know who these guys are” LOOK AT THEM. THEYRE KINDA WEIRD
ANYWAY !!!!!!! YAYYAYAYAYA IRIS AND SHERLOCK YAAAAAAAY. this post is probably gonna get long too so heres my eyecatch so people who dont wanna read all that are still forced to see them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
describe their canon relationship/dynamic
describe their canon relationship/dynamic
tumblr is being buggy with this post.
God…. how do i…. they have so much going on …. lets start with the basics hes her dad. Obviously. thats her dad. he was handed a baby and just went Ok!!!!!!!! and took care of her forever. thats her dad. Iris’ main, initial frame of reference for The World and Being A Person is This Fucking Guy.
There is also the fact that thru most of the games she is not Calling Him her dad </3 consequences of. him telling her hes not her dad ansbJSHJSNSJSNSJSNWJS. even still as ryuu & susato say they have a parent child relationship … for the jokes abt iris being more lkke the parent of course which Is True and a Straightforward Joke But Still Really Funny. but he still is. like. The Dad Equivalent. Her Guardian. even when not actually Her Dad. they have a mutual duty of care. Sherlock makes sure they have money to buy food & Iris actually Makes Edible Food and thats about it you know.
they have the funniest fucking dynamic. Ever,. they treat each other like Equals. they talk to each other like Colleagues. They literally try to steal money from each other. iris bullies him all of the time and he also sort of bullies her back. Iris walks around loudly announcing embarrassing facts about him in public and Sherlock yells at her about it and no one feels bad and they love each other. and she kicks him. theyre so funny
Basically just. thats her dad. they are also best friends being each others constant companions for ten years (Because he raised her from birth). they steadfastly look out and care for each other. and every morning they wake up and try to invent new ways to be mean to each other
your ideal/headcanon version of it? how does it differ from how it is in canon & why is this your favorite version? any other alternate versions of it you enjoy?
in terms of Their Relationship Dynamic there is no way to improve upon it. there is nothing to change. theyre perfect. this is the best relationship ever. but i still of course have lots of headcanons about them. where do i even begin
for one thing as is probably already clear i thimk every day abt what capcom refuses to give us answers on: Iris’ Early Childhood and The Process Of Sherlock Raising Her. please i wanna know what that was like. And continues to be like tbh its just not something we see much bc its not relevant to ryuus side of things…… First of all: he has undeniably tried his best to take care of her and done an overall good job. look at her. Mikotoba would not have trusted sherlock with an entire fucking baby if he was not confident the man could like. Handle It. Successfully keep another human alive and make sure she comes out overall well adjusted and all that. But hes still. Sherlock Holmes (Ace Attorney Character). He. again. does not seem to have any perspective on what to prioritize. I just think he went “okay time to teach iris The Basics” and then jumped straight from “heres how to write your name” to giving her lectures on something he learned the other day about aerodynamics and skipped over a bunch of stuff in between and didn’t really realize until she, like, saw an owl and went UNAUTHORIZED FUCKING BEAST? because she was like 5 and had still never heard of an owl.
Also im glad everyone in the world independently got up and thought “he definitely took that baby to crime scenes” because he definitely took that baby to crime scenes. Like. As everyone has said 200 times. What the hell else is he gonna do? He has to take cases or he DIES. There is no one he is close enough to for him to go Hey take my baby for a while. He’s broke as fuck permanently he cant PAY someone to watch her. Come on 8 month old child who’s still figuring out how to, like, Exist, let’s go Solve A Mystery. I don’t think she’s ever, like, seen a dead body, though. It’s all in my head, you understand, I have the whole escalation of it in my mind - when shes a Really Tiny Baby he has to just focus on Watching Her and can only take the kind of cases that can be solved sitting in the living room (he is going insane), then when he gets past the “what if i stop paying attention to her for ONE SECOND and she EXPLODES” phase he can do stuff that actually requires Investigation, then the second she’s able to Talk he goes Yeah that probably means she can Help with investigations now. and shes iris so hes right. I think 1-5 is prrrrrrobably her first Murder Investigation though. shes a little girl! you don’t take a little girl to a murder scene! Except under special circumstances!
This veered in … some slightly different direction than just Their Relationship i guess but fuck dude it was fun. Like. I like them. I think about them. i think sherlock went oh god oh fuck i dont know what children are like whats good for children *thinks about him as a child* I WAS WEIRD WASNT I THAT WONT WORK *iris turns out to be Just Like Him* Oh thank god here 4 year old child take this chemistry set and scrap metal. Go wild.
what do you like about their relationship, why is it interesting or enjoyable to you?
I swear to god ive probably said this on 80% of these ask game responses: I like family. They family. all ace attorney games kind of have a Found Family cast in the end, but they dont generally refer to characters who dont have clear cut straightforward straight up family relationships As Family, except DGS, which has ryuu explicitly call them His Family, and, and, I don’t know that the themes of The Importance Of Family & Family Being Something You Can Choose play a huge role in the story of dgs itself in most places, esp the Chosen Family bit, but its THERE, in ryuu calling the gang his wonderful family & iris adopting him and susato as her siblings & mikotoba caring for asougi like his son and Most Prominently, Iris Calling Sherlock Her Dad. which i will elaborate on the importance of in a minute but anyway i just think theyre really cute and really funny
what about the individual characters involved? what does this relationship mean to them, what makes it unique among their relationships?
YOU REMEMBER THAT THING I SAID BRIEFLY IN THE HOMUMIKO ASK ABT MEETING SOMEONE RIGHT WHEN U REALLY NEED IT. *pulls out yet another pepe silvia style conspiracy board* Here i actually made a chart.
Tumblr media
I don’t remember almost anything abt the mainline AA series, only remember this bc I’ve seen it mentioned so much, and don’t even remember it clearly enough to know for sure if it’s Dialogue From The Game or just Conclusions People Reached but you know that shit about, Phoenix gets disbarred and its A Bad Time For Him but its Less Bad Than It Could Have Been because at the same time he gets Trucy and now he has Trucy. Like. Same concept. “Accidental Child Acquisition leading to Better Ability To Cope With The Shit That Just Happened In Your Life” is more common than you might think apparently. Inspiring! Every Day This Man Holds Off Emotional Breakdown Until AFTER His Baby Is Fed
If i was ever going to say more about his side of things thanjudt. All That. i forgor. shes dotter. incontext the “i raised you well!!” line is just , a joke abt him being proud of her for something He Very Much Does Not Ever Do Himself but still like WAH . proud of dotter.
Anyway originally i was like, what the hell can I say about iris? That’s her dad and that’s about it. And then I went Simon are you fucking STUPID? THATS HER DAD. THATS THE POINT. God… oh my god …….
Basically!! Returning to the point about Choosing Who Your Family Is and how Sherlock & Iris and specifically Iris calling him her dad for the first time (since we met her) is the most prominent example in the game!!!
Iris’s Whole Deal™️ is she got her World Changed by finding out sherlock wasn’t her “real” dad and her dad was Some Guy She’s Never Met and now she goes then who the fuck IS my dad? Where do I come from? Who Am I? and her Search For Her Dad, Desire To Meet Him, & Attempt To Feel Closer To Him By Reading His Notes And Putting Herself In His Shoes is like. a big part of her identity. For like maybe almost half her life up to this point too!! And …… then she gets closer & farther away & closer & farther away and she decides Susie & Ryuu r her Siblings and somewhere in all of this. decides it doesnt matter quite That much who her “Real” Dad is because shes not defined by her biological father and she already. Has a dad. cries. And. And. And because of the time she spent Not Thinking Of Sherlock As Her Dad it means hes her dad ultimately because She Decided It . not bc he or anyone else said it should be like that but bc she decided he is her dad.
So like . you know. starts sobbing in the streets. anyway they r just both very very important to each other
favorite interaction they have in canon
First prize goes to the off-screen interaction Iris mentions in the credits where she gave him a note that just said like “thank you for everything daddy!” and he read it and started crying. Its like. The ONE thing about dgs2 i remembered with Clarity. in the years between my first & second times watching dgs i thought about it often and i still do.
Second prize goes to her going “oh its just a wax figure see *KICKS HIM AS HARD AS SHE CAN*” itsso fucking funny. that was not necessary. at all. she just wanted to kick him huh
favorite interaction they have in your head/a situation you want to put them in
FUCK UMMM. UHHHHH. i already kind of talked about it but even though i dont think its really even IMPLIED? that sherlock has ever taken her to Investigate A Case? she just stays at home generally? In my heart she goes with him and helps out somet8mes. i want to see it.
what else. obvious and not really the kind of thing id put in this category generally but like Iris finds out her dad was klimt when. hey fuckos!! When r u going to tell her !!!
alsgo i have a weakness for Older Iris content like ough my god 🥺🥺 ou my goed 🥺🥺😭 She growed. one day she will not be the most powerful 10 year old in the world she will be the most powerful 20 year old in the world. show me !! show me !! I want to see!! she is going to do so fuckinf much its unreal!!
Finally, i thought of this ages ago for reasons now forgotten to me and just remembered it today. sherlock & iris & date & mizuki hangout. tehyre *checks notes* girls who do violence on their dads sometimes and that’s about it but its funny right
In conclusion: kiss on top of iris little baby head. appreciate her

Confessions of Dorian Gray Relisten 2022 - The Fallen King of Britain Britain
Ai'ght, here we go. The finale of the inaugural Series One, released in November of 2011, it's time for... The Fallen King of Britain.
Tumblr media
Dorian's a banker. Among other things. A figurative "king", if you will, rather than a literal one. He's slinging coke and doing business and he's just stupendously bored with it all.
And Dorian's demon-possessed cocaine is killing his friends and coworkers.
Yes you read that correctly.
When's it Go: January, 2007. Dorian's made it to "present day", though this wasn't even contemporaneous to the release, instead being about five years earlier. We won't get to proper proper "set at time of release" until the next season or so. Does a good job of painting a picture of high-rise flat London in the mid-aughts from the point of view of the people at the top of the class hierarchy.
Continuity Watch: The White Rabbit makes a showing, a staple of Big Finish releases. It's been the watering hole of choice for Doctors, archaeologists, aliens, etc.
There's also a series of scenes where Dorian's having some episodes and various people from Dorian's past (coincidentally those from the episodes in this season, natch) start showing up, including Toby, Madam Moreau, Dora, Rosina (and the baby), Basil Hallward, and even Big Finish's version of Sherlock Holmes played by Briggs himself in a cheeky call-forward to the Christmas Special that would follow this. Surprisingly, only two of those characters wouldn't be making further appearances in the series. Some more recurring than others.
Dorian also mentions Spencer, from the Shades of Gray episode of Bernice Summerfield, when rattling off names of loved ones he's responsible for the deaths of!
In Review: I mean this in the most complimentary way but I'd probably rank this lowest out of all the season one releases. It's still quite good, of course, it's just that one of them has to be the bottom of the pile, and hey it's this one. It starts out describing Dorian's nightlife that he does more out of habit than anything else and how he's kinda over everything and just not excited anymore and the narrative does perhaps just a tad too good of a job of making it all seem mundane because I do find my attention wandering for the first ten minutes or so, which is bad because this one is extra long. After the first death though things start picking up.
Simon's a brilliantly crafted foil to Dorian. A sweet, wholesome fellow caught up in the high flying business world Dorian currently occupies and Dorian is absolutely convinced there's something supernatural about him because there's always something supernatural about them but there's not, for once. And Dorian might just be out of his mind on the blow. Or it could be possessed by the spirits of the damned, who's to say.
They never actually resolve the haunted coke thing, actually. Though I suppose ultimately it doesn't actually matter, as Dorian is ultimately unconcerned with it so why should we be? It's not the point of the play, really. Rather, it's more about Dorian going through a change of character. And that part of it, is handled wonderfully. By the end, Dorian's resolved to be a better person, and surprisingly he keeps it up in the following season.
It's a good cap-off to the season. And honestly, if the series had ended right there, I don't think we could have too many complaints. It's a nice, rounded off season comprised of a tour de force of powerful episodes and everyone did such an amazing job and it wasn't even over! They surprised us all with a Christmas episode! And then a second season! And a third! And a fourth! What started out as a little experiment to see if a low-budget digital-only series aimed at a different audience than their usual Doctor Who fare would go over well is now ten years old and the ride never ends, though it sometimes tricks us into thinking it has haha.
I've gotten a bit away from the review of this particular episode but yeah, it's good, go listen to it, it's worth it.

i have a trans headcanon. basil of bakerstreet (mouse sherlock holmes from the movie „the great mouse detective“) is trans and mlm. he used to be in a relationship with ratigan. this can be seen in the italian version of ratigans villain song „goodbye so soon“. that song is a literal love song in the italian version, called „addio amor“ (goodbye [my] love). in the song he proclaims „non sei più mia“ (you are not mine anymore). „mia“ is the feminine version of mine, „mio“ would be masculine. he still claims that he wrote the song for basil.
he purposefully misgenders basil and reminds him of their failed relationship in an attempt to break his spirit. so basil is a trans man. because i said so. and ratigan is evil

18 Versions of Sherlock Holmes Ranked from Most to Least Likely to Set a Building on Fire in a Fit of Rage
Updated list here!
1. Jonny Lee Miller — Elementary
Tumblr media
This cool modern gent had a Moment™ in the very first episode of this series wherein he crashed Watson’s car into the side of the villain’s for absolutely no reason except the guy had pissed him off. That’s only like half a step down from setting a building on fire, which makes it almost canon, so this fantastic band tee-wearing lunatic gets first place for sure.
2. Yuko Takeuchi — Miss Sherlock
Tumblr media
She may look cute, but this girl is fearless and feral. She would set a building on fire on a whim and dance away, leaving her poor Watson holding the matches as a joke. We haven’t really seen her angry, but she for sure would be unstoppable if she was. Sherlock Futaba has a secret heart of gold and a not-so-secret wit of arsenic and she’s not afraid to use either of them to end your ass.
3. Benedict Cumberbatch — Sherlock
Tumblr media
He might tie for second place with Miss Sherlock, actually, because we all remember that one American who dared to slap Mrs. Hudson and fell out a window, several times, for it. I don’t need to tell y’all this Sherlock Holmes is vicious as a viper when he wants to be, but he’s also sweet as a newborn kitten deep down. Still, #3 is pretty high on the list and I think this emotion-driven drama queen deserves it.
4. Christopher Plummer — Murder by Decree
Tumblr media
For most of this 1970s movie, you would never be able to picture this Holmes with a temper at all, much less one big enough to set anything on fire. He’s empathetic, easygoing, and even downright warm. But then, after discovering how a young woman has been mistreated by people in power, he suddenly goes for a guy’s throat—literally—and then it’s easier to see why he’s #4 on my list.
5. Basil of Baker Street — The Great Mouse Detective
Tumblr media
Excuse me, it absolutely counts as a legitimate adaptation. This manic little guy might be cute as a button but he will go absolutely rabid on you if you push him (although he might feel bad about it a second later). I’m not saying it’s super likely, but it’s not super unlikely either. Honestly I wouldn’t take the risk.
6. Peter Cushing — The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)
Tumblr media
He might not be #1 on this list, but on a list of sassiest Sherlock Holmeses ever, he would definitely be at the top. More than once this sly gentleman was seconds away from Losing It(TM) in this movie; we might not ever have seen him show his temper completely, but between his impatient (but still affectionate) bickering with Watson and his mumbled sarcasm at every other character at every available opportunity, I wouldn’t doubt his capability of setting a fire in sheer annoyance.
7. Jeremy Brett — Sherlock Holmes
Tumblr media
Calm but intense, this Sherlock Holmes is extremely popular, thanks mostly to Brett’s love and passion for the role; with all his self-control, every once in a while there’s a little flash of something much bigger going on underneath–his voice gets louder and his eyes get sharper and for a second you might wonder what he’s going to do. It would just depend on the situation, I think; hurt Watson, for example, and yeah…his fire will get you for sure.
8. Original Books
Tumblr media
There’s no Sherlock Holmes like the original. Like Brett above, the Blueprint Holmes is cool, unruffled, and very much in control most of the time, but there are a few moments here and there when he turns into lightning personified, ready to strike someone down in a split second if they stir up his wrath. Nevertheless, he is softer and kinder and more patient than most adaptations give him credit for, so he’s lower on the list.
9. Yekaterina Vasilyeva — My Dearly Beloved Detective
Tumblr media
This Russian movie features a rare female Sherlock Holmes. Even though the story is more silly comedy than serious mystery, Shirley as a character stands out for her perfectly in-character intensity, cleverness, and of course deductive powers. But despite her intensity, she handles all the complete idiots in her life with more resigned annoyance than anger, and even when faced with extreme insult she hardly shrugs. When tested, she’s more prone to an irritated stare than anything else, so she’s number nine.
10. Basil Rathbone — Sherlock Holmes
Tumblr media
Ever wanted to see Sherlock Holmes take out Nazis? This might be the series for you, then. Despite the ‘40s vintage action vibe, though, this Sherlock Holmes really doesn’t have much in the way of a temper and a lot in the way of cool, observant preplanning. When it comes to high-emotion moments, this Holmes is more urgent action than fiery temper. With all that, he tends to lean more on the non-flammable side of the Sherlock Holmes spectrum.

Slytherin Cartoon characters. First image is heroes and the second one is villains
Notes:
Yeah, I know everyone likes to put any version or parody of Sherlock Holmes into Ravenclaw because “Ravenclaw Smart” but Basil (and most versions of Sherlock Holmes) is clever and resourceful, so he’d be more at home in Slytherin
Yes, Mickey Mouse. Specifically early Mickey Mouse back when he was a total trickster character.
Gosh, I should’ve snuck Oswald the Lucky Rabbit on here, too
I know technically there is no “good vs evil” in Spy vs Spy, but in their own eyes they’re heroic for serving their countries, so it counts
Tiana can go either Slytherin or Hufflepuff, tbh, but I went with Slytherin because of her great ambitions
Marvin was literally written to be a “clever villain” because Chuck Jones wanted to create a character who Bugs would have to match wits with instead of easily outsmarting.

Movie Review: The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Tumblr media
I have to say I was disappointed.
Disappointed in the fact that it took me 30 years to watch this masterpiece! I still can’t believe it! I grew up watching Disney’s “Robin Hood” and then later Kevin Costner’s version followed by Cary Elwes’ take on the lovable rogue, but never watched Errol Flynn’s and I can’t tell you why I never watched it. Because, honestly, I’m still trying to figure it out. LOL.
Robin Hood is one of my favorite characters in literature and movies. So, like I said, I was disappointed that it took me so long to watch this masterpiece with Errol Flynn!
This movie has all you want in a feel good, smile all the way kind of movie. Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Chases. Escapes. True Love. (See what I did there...LOL) There are moments when you frown, but the frown is quickly erased with another smile.
I won’t give the plot away, because I’m sure many of you have seen it. (The Normans i.e. the rich, are torturing and stealing from the poor Saxons. Robin stands up to them and becomes an outlaw, and also takes care of the Saxons because King Richard is kidnapped and held for ransom. Ransom Prince John doesn’t want to pay, because he wants to be king.) Timeless story, everyone has seen it, but I will say this movie seemed to have done a slightly better job at creating it.
So, in light of this, I’ll just say what I really enjoyed about it.
This was honestly the first movie I watched with Errol Flynn and I must say, it was a charming introduction. His chemistry with the late great Olivia de Havilland was wonderful and even got me shivering with delight. (Also, Basil Rathbone, i.e. Sherlock Holmes, as Guy of Gisburne is a must see!)
Tumblr media
One of my favorite scenes was the part where they declare their love for each other. If you know me, you know I’m a romantic all the way. So, their love scene had me squealing in delight. Also, I tried so hard not to melt. haha
Here is the link to the best version of the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHyI09VjClE
Tumblr media
The lines said throughout are also memorable.
“You speak treason.” “Fluently.”
“Normans or Saxons what does it matter? It’s injustice I hate not the Normans.”
I will say how much I love Maid Marian. Besides Robin, she is my favorite, and I love the way they portrayed her in this movie. At first, she’s got more of a tunnel vision because she’s been taught a certain way of life. A privileged, Norman life. She believes the Saxons should be beholden to the Normans, but doesn’t truly understand what that really entails. Robin, being the kind person he is, shows her the truth. She witnesses the brutality her fellow Normans treat the Saxons and is ashamed. She also sees Robin in a new light. It’s because of this light, she falls in love with him. Because of the injustice and her love for Robin, she decides to join the crusade.
She’s a strong character. Not a damsel in distress. She plots to rescue Robin from death. She risks her life to send a message to him and his men about an assassination attempt. She stands strong in the face of death. She is a seriously strong woman.
This is the clip of the speech she tells Prince John and the others after being caught: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4c_pbp8Hvw
There is so much to say about this film. I could literally go on and on, but I will stop here. Only to say, this movie, even though it was released in 1938, is still an amazing film. Not to mention good fun and doesn’t seem to have aged at all.

Recommended: OH HECK YES!!

I need to ramble about OG SKAM and remakes, and it's gonna be a long-ass post !
Before I begin, just to be clear : I haven’t watched all of SKAM NL, and I didn’t really like SKAM Austin. Well, I watched the first episode of SKAM Austin a while back, but I didn’t really wanna watch the rest of it, so...yeah.
So far, I watched the whole of SKAM Italia, and OG SKAM of course. I watched parts of season 1 & 2, and then from season 3 of SKAM France until current season 6; season 2 of SKAM España; the first episodes of SKAM NL; part of season 1, then complete season 3 Druck; and some of the season 1, the complete season 3 of WTFock, as well as WTFockdown, though.
Anyway, I was talking with my wonderful beta-reader, @unfinishedbusinessss a couple weeks ago,and thought, wow, I can’t even begin to rank Even & Isak’s versions in every remake, each couple has chemistry, and I can’t even pick a favorite among the remakes !
This got me thinking, I kinda wanted to do a humongous post about the whole SKAMverse though, not just the Evak versions.
Obviously, OG SKAM will always be first, and Even & Isak are just...OTP, forever. I fell in love with their story so much, but I feel like every remake managed to get me to fall in love with every Even & Isak’s version, and I wasn’t prepared fo that, tbh. Vilde is so irritating. Noora is the best character in the whole SKAMverse, and William is an ass. I loved Sana’s season so much it hurts, and Yousef is a sweetheart. Cried during the whole Jonas’ speech at the end, and during the Vilde-Chris scene as well, even though I don’t like Vilde ! That’s saying something. Isak is one of my favorite characters, but Even comes close. Eskild is my precious child.
Top 5 characters from OG SKAM :
1. Noora Amalie Sætre (wow, what an icon ! I mean, I kinda wish they would’ve dropped her whole storyline with William, because I definitely do not care for him, and I like Noora’s opinions in season 1 & the beginning of season 2. I love that she’s a feminist, so much more mature than the rest of the girls’ squad, and her introduction in the show, when she meets Eva, is jus perfect. I loved her from the first second ! Red lipstick looks incredibly good on her too, just saying.)
2. Isak Valtersen (I can’t tell you how much I like and relate to Isak, me, a 31-year old woman. (lol) He’s very much a teenage version of myself back in the days ! I like his inner battles, his friendship with Jonas is everything. His internalized homophobia is portrayed very realistically, I might add. I liked his character from quite early on, but his season just did it for me. Tarjei Sandvik Moe is a very good actor, we got so lucky with his casting in this role ! I love his character development from season 1 to season 4. He’s grown so much in such a short period of time !)
3. Even Bech Næsheim (okay, let me start with the obvious : Henrik Holm’s smile, eyes and laugh had me gone from the start. He’s gorgeous and I can definitely see why Isak fell for him ! His character is soooo well written, Henrik portrays Even so beautifully and with so many nuances, I loved every on-screen minute Even gets in season 3 and season 4. He’s got so much layers ! I also liked that we were all lost because of his atttitude when we watched season 3 of OG, because what the hell’s happening right now, Even ?! That’s really a proof of how amazing Henrik was in this role. And their chemistry was off the charts from their very first scene together, which doesn’t hurt either !)
4. Jonas Noah Vasquez (amazing best friend to Isak when he needs it !)
5. Sana Bakkoush (queen ! I love her so much, she’s definitely an iconic character ! I think all of the Sanas in the remakes don’t even come close to her, but Imane in SKAM France is amazing, Amira in SKAM España is fantastic, Yasmina in WTfock is sooooo good (can’t wait for her season !!), and Amira in Druck is freakin’ amazing as well. But like I said, Sana in OG SKAM is definitely the most fantastic one !)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
SKAM France
When I heard they were making remakes, I honestly thought, “okay, so they’re gonna make seven different copies in seven different countries ?” It didn’t make any sense at the time.
So when SKAM France aired, I watched from afar, terrified that they would mess this up in the only way the French knows how (I’m French myself), and I didn’t really fell in love with the first two seasons. I didn’t even like Lucas, to be honest. He was a minor character in the background, and I didn’t expect to fall in love with Lucas and Eliott’s story as much as I did. I also didn’t expect their love scenes to be this tasteful and beautiful, so I was kinda blown away by that, and by their chemistry. The piano scene and the paint scene will forever be on my mind whenever I think about season 3 of SKAM France. I also fell in love with Imane, to be honest. She’s gorgeous, and her season with Sofiane was amazing. I didn’t expect to like “Le gang” as much as I did either. Mahdi and Magnus in OG SKAM are not really among my favorite characters, but boy did I liked Arthur and Basile. Both the actors are amazing, which tremendously helps ! I didn’t find Daphné as irritating as Vilde in OG SKAM though, don’t know why. She might actually be in my top 5, whereas Vilde is one of my least favorite characters in OG SKAM, with Emma of course. Oh, and I love the fact that Alexia is bisexual in this version ! That’s such a good addition !
I loved season 5. I was kinda dreading it at first, but when I learnt that it was gonna be based on Arthur, I was kinda relieved. I think Robin Migné is a terrific actor, and his performance during this whole season is just stellar !
So far, I quite like season 6. Maya will definitely enter my top 5 sometime very soon, honestly, and Lola’s not far behind her. Basile has redeemed himself so much since season 3 when I thought he was annoying as fuck !
Top 5 characters from SKAM France :
1. Lucas Lallemant (that guy. We’ve been blessed, you guys : Axel Auriant is a freakin’ incredible actor, which makes the character all the more realistic and likeable. I’ll be forever impressed by episode 7 of season 3, especially the beginning with the scene on the couch with Mika and Manon, where Lucas is crying because of Yann’s stupid reaction to Lucas coming out. What a shitty friend, honestly...)
2. Imane Bakhellal (she’s so fierce and I almost like her even better than I did Sana in OG SKAM. She’s beautiful and witty AF, I loved her season !)
3. Alexia Martineau (bi queen with colored hair, I love her so much !!)
4. Arthur Broussard (he grew on me sooo much in season 5, but I liked him from the start, tbh)
5. Manon Demissy (although I didn’t get around to watch her own season yet, but I hate Charles’ character with a passion, so I can’t bring myself to watch it yet...)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
SKAM Italia (SKAM Italy)
Oh boy, does this remake has a particular place in my heart. I’m in love with the Italian language, have been for YEARS literally, and I think the whole cast is just gorgeous ! Eva might be my favorite Eva version to date. Season 4 was just SO GOOD, OMG, and I don’t even like Italian Sana that much, but wow, this was amazing !
Top 5 characters from SKAM Italia :
1. Martino Rametta (what a surprise ! It’s not a secret : Martino means the world to me. I was drawn to him very fast, very deeply. Maybe it’s because Federico Cesari is one hell of a an actor, maybe that’s because of his boyish cute freckly smiley charm, whatever; but he’s my number one favorite character from the whole SKAMverse. I can’t explain, really. He’s got something about him that just...makes me squeal every time I see him on screen. His season was SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I loved that we got to see his relationship with his mom. I loved the way Fede portrays his emotions, his inner battles, his fears. The way he acts with his eyes. And boy, season 4 was fireworks. Fede was always good, but season 4 was AMAZING. That scene with Sana is all kinds of incredible. Martino has never looked this good. He never looked so open, raw, vulnerable. His storyline with Niccolò kinda broke my heart, to be honest, but we got so much Martino screen time, I’m not complaining. He’s a gem. I’ll never not like Martino, he’s my person. I just connect with him so much, I can’t even explain it clearly !)
2. Giovanni Garau (”con la u finale, perché è sardo” ! Giovanni, aka the best Jonas in the entire SKAMverse. I loved OG Jonas, as well as German Jonas, don’t get me wrong, but Giovanni is ALWAYS there for Martino, and their friendship definitely fall into the brOTP category ! I love how supportive he is all through season 2, fights for Martino’s right to be happy and in love in public in season 3, and just never leaves his side in season 4. We’ve been blessed with this character you guys ! The male characters in SKAM Italia are so strong and likeable, it’s not even funny !)
3. Filippo Sava (one of the most amazing versions of Eskild to ever exist. I don’t have enough words to describe how much I LOVE this character ! Pietro Turano did an amazing job, wow. If Milan in WtFOCK wasn’t so fantastic, I’d definitely put Filippo in first place in the Eskild versions ranking !)
4. Niccolò Fares (I think Rocco Fasano did a fantastic job portraying Niccolò ! He’s definitely an underrated actor. Loved Niccolò quite late in season 2 though, but from the moment their first kiss happened, I fell in love with their story. And season 4 was just SO GOOD. We definitely get a side of Niccolò we didn’t even get with Even in OG SKAM, and his clip in episode 10 is amazing. Kudos Rocco, you definitely deserve recognition for your portrayal of  Niccolò !)
5. Eva Brighi (one of the best Evas in the whole SKAMverse, IMO !)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
SKAM España (SKAM Spain)
I’m not gonna ramble too much on this remake, especially because it might be the one I connected the less with, and I’ve only seen season 2 so far. Might be an unpopular opinion, but Cris gets on my nerves sometimes, that’s why she’s not in my top 5 characters from this particular remake.
Top 5 characters from SKAM España :
1. Lucas Rubio Fernández (the spanish Eskild, I think he’s cute AF, and incredibly brave. I really loved all of his interactions with Cris in season 2, he’s bringing her some wisdom she didn’t even knew she needed !)
2. Joana Bianchi Acosta (queen. I quickly was drawn to her character, I think from the moment we see her in her first scene with Cris. Tamara Ronchese is fantastic !)
3. Amira Naybet (OMG, her reaction to Cris coming out is everything !! Can’t wait to see her season !)
4. Nora Grace (she reminds me so much of OG Noora sometimes, it’s uncanny ! She has such a graceful presence !)
5. Dani Soto Peña (Cris’ older brother. I quite liked that we got to see Cris’ family in this version, her mother and brother. Dani was soooo annoying at first, but he was sooo sweet to Cris from the moment he drove her to the hospital to see Joana, and that scene when they smoke together on the terrace is everything. Such an accurate sibling scene !)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
Druck (SKAM Germany)
Hooooooly wow, this remake is FREAKIN’ FANTASTIC. I finally watched season 3 during lockdown, so it’s very recent, but GOD it gave me so many feelings ! That version of Isak and Even is everything.
Top 5 characters from Druck :
1. David Schreibner (KING. Holy wow, Lukas Alexander/von Horbatschewsky is GOLD. He got me crying more than once. David’s story actually changes a lot from OG SKAM, but thank youuu Druck for shining a light on transgender’s representation in TV shows. David is a sooo well written character, he struggles a lot, but he’s relatable in so many ways. Wow, he’s just such a layered and complex character, I was blown away, really. And again, THANK YOU Druck for showing a sex scene with a transgender character, and him having an open conversation with Matteo about his struggle and how he sees himself is soo so important. It is so important to feel represented in movies and TV shows, I’m truly so thankful for this version of SKAM. Thank you Lukas !)
2. Matteo Florenzi (Matteo is an actual teenager, his portrayal is on point, and I felt his pain from the start. Michelangelo Fortuzzi did an amazing job, wow. Matteo grew on me so much in just one episode, it’s actually scary ! By the end of the first episode I wanted him to be happy, dump Sara, and just kiss David already.)
3. Jonas Augustin (Matteo has such an amazing best friend, with such a good singing voice ! Episode 10 of season 3 had me shook ! Iconic episode !)
4. Amira Mahmood (just a word for you : QUEEN ! Amira’s iconic ! I can’t wait to watch her season !)
5. Sam M’Pele (LOVE Chris’ version in Druck ! She’s awesome and so stylish ! I’m in love with her hair !)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
WTfock (SKAM Belgium)
Yet again, I actually caught up on WTfock during lockdown, since Druck and WTfock were the only remakes I never watched at this point. And yet again, I was BLOWN AWAY. WTfock got me feeling so many things, and I only watched season 3 and WTfockdown. Wow. hOLY WOW. Might be one of my favorite remake, it’s SO GOOD.
Top 5 characters from WTfock :
1. Milan Hendrickx (the flemish Eskild, one of my fave characters in all of the SKAMverse ! FUCK, Lars Brinkman knocks it out of the park, he truly does ! Milan is by far my favorite Eskild character. He’s sooo supportive, he’s a true friend, he’s funny AF - OMG, that scene where he tries to flirt with Moyo got me howling with laughter !! And he’s loyal. I love that he’s almost a father figure to Robbe, who definitely needs it ! That scene in episode 6 when Robbe tells him about the homophobic assholes...His reaction...I think I cried for like a good five minutes when I watched this, I couldn’t catch my breath. Milan’s precious, and we must protect him at all costs. A favorite. I’m in love with him, his supportiveness, his loyalty to Robbe, his smile, his affection for both Zoë and Robbe. They matter so much to him. He’s a sweetheart !)
2. Robbe IJzermans (FUCK I didn’t expect to feel so much things when watching season 3. Robbe is the Isak version that goes through the hardest stuff. His own internalized homophobia is sooo painful to witness... Jens is supportive when he comes out, but then Moyo and Aaron act like the biggest jerks on the planet, they just have this RIDICULOUS reaction when Robbe tries to tell them thay he's into Sander...And the end of episode 5 is awful. I just can't. He's gone through so much that season,it's insane. And yet by the end of episode 10, my heart felt so full for him and Sander finally happy...Gosh. What a rollercoaster...Willem Herbots is insanely cute and wow how well did he conveys Robbe's emotions. I'm speechless !)
3. Sander Driesen (holy wow this character is sooo good ! I was wondering at the beginning of episode 3 when we'll get to see him, and the minute he appeared on screem, him and Robbe instantly had that insane chemistry. Which peaked in the first kiss, in the pool in episode 4. That scene, that sing, that intensity...Yeah, Robbe and Sander bewitched me !)
4. Zoë Loockx (such a good character as well !)
5. Yasmina Ait Omar (can't waiiiit for her season !)
~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~
SKAM NL (Skam Netherlands)
This is gonna short and sweet, since I’ve only seen a couple episodes, but I already like quite a few characters so far !
Top 5 characters from SKAM NL :
1. Liv Reijners (what a badass character ! She’s beautiful and fierce, what a great Noora version ! I love her so much and I haven’t even watched her season yet !)
2. Isa Keijser (very relatable version of Eva, I must say. She’s cute AF and I love her friendship with Liv !)
3. Janna Mertens (one of the best Chris’ versions I’ve ever witnessed so far ! She has a unique look, and I think she’s an awesome female character !)
4. Lucas van der Heijden (a sneaky little shit I just love ! I’m sad we won’t get his season though...He’s very attractive, and I would have loved to see him meet his Even...)
5. Imaan Elami (once again, a version of Sana I quite like ! She’s beautiful, and kind of a queen, to be honest ! I really like her a lot. Yet again, so sad we won’t get her season, nor her friendship with Lucas...)

Disney Movie Marathon #26 The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
I've seen this movie once because it was on Netflix at the time. I thought sure why not. A Disney movie I've never seen before and I had no expectations going in. And I was very entertained for reasons I can't remember but I'm glad I'm coming back to it.
Story: Yeah this movie is still fun. It's Sherlock Holmes but with mice and way more silly than I imagine the actual Holmes stories are like. Or maybe they are. I never read them. Crazy Rat wants to take over London by swapping out the Queen Mouse with a toy version of her that was created by a toymaker he had kidnapped. See silly ride to be sure, but at least it makes the ride fun. It's practically night and day with Black Cauldron right before it. You actually get personality with the main cast and wonder where the heck this case is gonna end. Where are my fellow KH enthusiasts at? You know what I'd like to see in the games? The clock tower fight at the end of the movie.
Characters: Ratigan and Basil are the best for sure. This whole thing is basically these two trying get rid of the other and they have the most personality going on. Quite literally with how animated they are. Ratigan is a power hungry maniac while Basil is an eccentric detective. The supporting cast is good too. Except the peg leg bat, I wasn't really into him, and that might have to do with his voice more than his actual character so there's that.
Art/Animation: Also notable coming right off Black Cauldron is that the budget must've been lowered in certain parts. Not too much because it's not an ugly movie not at all but if you're comparing you can tell which initially got the the money. It's more or less the general Disney standard for their 2D films in animation quality and backgrounds and any special effects they may use
Songs: There were two major songs and I wasn't exactly into them. I was into Ratigan's song purely for the man's drama and theatrics of it all. The bar song was eh.

Disney: adjectives galore spring to mind when we hear this famous name: sweet, adventurous, wholesome, nostalgic, magical. But what some Disney fans may not know is that many Disney shorts and feature-length films were inspired by fairytales, plays, religious texts, and other literary sources. It seems that Walt Disney did a lot of reading in his day and knew that these tales would make for some of the most adored, classic movies for audiences old and young.
RELATED: Disney: Ranking The 15 Greatest Female Villains
And he wasn't wrong. These text-turned-flicks have motivated artists for decades to create not just movies, but fan art, fashion, and more.
10 The Princess And The Frog
Tumblr media
Disney's The Princess and the Frog (2009) follows Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), a worked-to-the-bone waitress and aspiring restaurant owner in 1950's Louisiana. She kisses a price-turned-frog, Naveen (Bruno Campos), and becomes one herself. They both journey across time, swamps, and streets in a race to turn themselves back to humans -- or remain amphibians forever.
In contrast, "The Frog-Prince" or "Iron Henry," from which Disney drew inspiration, is a german fairy tale from 1812. The prince-turned-frog under a witch's curse finds the princess when she throws a golden ball into the lake he occupies, exchanging the ball for her friendship, who then reverts back to a handsome prince. Iron Henry is the Prince's loyal servant, who, upon hearing of his Prince's transformation, encased his heart in iron bands so it wouldn't break and fall apart from sadness. When he learns of the Prince's change back to royalty, it breaks -- but from happiness.
9 The Little Mermaid
Tumblr media
The movie that inspired spin-offs, sequels, cosplay, and more: Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989) follows the story of Ariel (Jodi Benson) as she embarks on a quest to save her soul, literally, after making a deal with the sea witch, Ursula (Pat Carroll), to give her her perfect singing voice in exchange for becoming human. Of course, the spell can only be broken by true love's kiss, and in the end, it is, with viewers seeing a happy sea wedding between Ariel and Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes).
This flick takes its cues from both a play and a fairy tale. Unsatisfied with life, despite being incredibly successful, Faust makes a deal with the devil to give him his soul in exchange for all the knowledge and pleasures of the world. Ariel does the same but compromises her voice for love. Additionally, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name is essentially the same story, but with some darker elements, including murder, heartbreak and betrayal.
8 The Lion King
Tumblr media
Arguably the most famous, beloved Disney film of all time, The Lion King (1992) is a tour-de-force with a literary backdrop. Fans of Shakespeare will recognize the references to The Bard's classic tragic play, Hamlet, which is the tale of a young Denmarkian prince who avenges his father's death at the hands of his uncle.
RELATED: Disney: 5 Characters That Were Potentially Bad Influences (& 5 That Were Great Role Models)
Further, the pinnacle scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the nighttime sky in the form of clouds over the Serengeti -- his father, Mufasa -- harkens back to when Hamlet sees his own ghostly apparition of his father but also references Moses in the Christian bible as he stands before God when he appears in the burning bush. Finally, the entire journey mimics Joseph Campbell's story, The Heroes Journey (as many, many other films do), which follows the arc of the hero on his journey from beginning to end.
7 The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
Tumblr media
The 1996 Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, also has literary roots. Based on the gothic novel from 1831 by French author Victor Hugo, the book unfolds much the same way the film does, although some plotlines have been changed to suit child audiences and parents.
For instance, in the book, Esmerelda dies and Quasimodo, decades later, is found lying beside her in the mass grave into which she was thrown in with criminals and the poor.
6 The Great Mouse Detective
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the most underrated Disney movies in the ether, The Great Mouse Detective (1986) is a story of a mouse detective named Basil (of Baker Street), his sidekick Watson, and the adventure they go on to rescue a young mouse girl's kidnapped father from the notorious Professor Ratigan.
This Disney gem was based on the exploits of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his for-hire detective skills that focused on London's despondent and downtrodden, as well as the wealthy elite.
5 Snow White
Tumblr media
1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is about a young, fair maiden, cast aside into the dangerous, dark, and deep forest by her wicked stepmother for being more beautiful than her. When a huntsman is ordered to kill her, he spares Snow White's life and she takes up residence in a small cottage with seven mining dwarfs.
RELATED: Disney: 10 Movies With Surprisingly Adult Messages
The fairy tale of the same name from the Brothers Grimm unfurls much the same, only with more murderous plots-for-hire and red-hot iron slippers.
4 Sleeping Beauty
Tumblr media
Disney's Sleeping Beauty from 1959 is one of the most famous peasant-turned-princess stories. Naturally, Disney took its cues from the Brothers Grimm, once again, in their fairy tale titled "Little Brier-Rose."
Absent are the three tiny fairy godmothers who look after the princess in the film version, but otherwise, much is the same, complete with a Maleficent-type villain and true love's kiss breaking the cursed spell.
3 Rapunzel
Tumblr media
Disney's Tangled (2010) is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel. It unravels in much the same way that the film does, but with some differences: Rapunzel, in the fairy tale, is a sort of lettuce leaf her mother craves during pregnancy, and the king steals it from the sorceress' garden in which it grows.
The prince also becomes blinded at one point, unlike in the movie, but has his sight restored and, like the film, he and Rapunzel live happily ever after.
2 Oliver And Company
Tumblr media
Another underrated Disney flick, Oliver & Company (1988) features the story of a lost and abandoned tabby kitten named Oliver (Joey Lawrence), who joins a rough-and-tumble gang of dogs in New York City (their leader being Dodger, played by Billy Joel).
RELATED: 10 Strange Movies Disney Almost Made
This hidden treasure is based on Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist or The Parish Boy's Progress, published in London in 1838. The prose follows orphan Oliver Twist, who was born in a workhouse and became an apprentice for an undertaker. Deciding to escape, he travels to London and encounters the "Artful Dodger," a member of a criminal gang led by the elderly criminal, Fagin.
1 Cinderella
Tumblr media
Cinderella, Disney's classic rags-to-riches film from 1950, is one of their greatest since Snow White. The film, once again, drew its magic from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same moniker (also known as "The Little Glass Slipper").
As with almost all of these fairy tales, there were some darker elements excluded from Disney's version that were present in the Brothers Grimm tale, like when the evil stepsisters mutilate their feet in order for the slipper to fit, as well as pigeons plucking out both of their eyes by the end of the tale.

Oh gosh please do explain your thoughts on The Great Mouse Detective! I loved that movie so much as a kid and is still one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes adaptions :D
goodbyenorthernlights said:
I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on The Great Mouse Detective as a Sherlock Holmes adaptation
Now, I’m no Lindsay Ellis. But before everything else, we have to consider Sherlock Holmes as the most adapted character in fiction. There is no character or series revolving around that character that has more entries in its expanded ‘canon’ of adaptation or homage materials. Not Dracula. Not Frankenstein. Nothing else has more books, movies, and other media about them than Sherlock Holmes or the context of ACD’s original series.
So we’re going to have to look at Sherlock Holmes adaptations in a special way, even compared to adaptations of other ‘classic’ works. Every time Sherlock Holmes is adapted, it’s not just a retelling or redux of the material, but also a comment on the concept of Sherlock Holmes. These comments don’t even need to be specifically super deep or even intentional. There is just metacontext in adapting Sherlock Holmes that there might not be in adapting other materials because there are so many Holmes adaptations.
For example, Sherlock Holmes himself exists in whatever universe the Great Mouse Detective takes place in.
Tumblr media
We see him (but only as a shadow) multiple times. This isn’t a universe where Sherlock Holmes happens to be a mouse. This is a universe where Sherlock Holmes is so powerful there is also a mouse version of Sherlock Holmes that the Mouse World beneath our feet needs, because of course there is.
Although we see it as a ‘period piece’ today, when ACD wrote his original stories it wasn’t. It was a fanciful piece about a brilliant but also sort of fantastic man based on someone he knew, but also definitely ‘strange.’ Honestly I think that Basil of Baker Street is one of the better takes on the hot-and-cold or even bipolar energy that ACD’s Holmes’ knew. He can disregard the feelings of others when he’s so passionately focused on his trail, but he’s not cruel or unkind. He can be hesitant to take anyone as seriously as himself and his own work, but finds purpose in helping others. He is quick to fall into discouragement and melancholy when the person he thinks has the most answers– himself– fails or seems not to be of much use.
Tumblr media
Basically, whoever made him clearly ‘got’ why Sherlockians like Holmes so much, and adapt him so often. Something I can’t say for many modern tv or movie adaptations.
But in its way, it’s nothing like a Sherlock Holmes story. And I suppose that has to be true, because Sherlock Holmes stories are often nothing like Disney movies, and often don’t offer the same level of action (though action does occur) or family comedy or adventure.
Tumblr media
Or whatever this is.They often also don’t offer the same high stakes (the world is threatened, a country is threatened, a way of life is threatened, the people the protagonist personally is connected to are threatened) as a Disney story, either. There aren’t really many schemes to replace the Queen of England with a robot double in Sherlock Holmes stories.
Tumblr media
The mysteries take place more on the level of ‘stolen treasure’ or ‘mysterious murders.’ Setting is important and antagonist is important, but with the exception of one few Holmes’ story perps are iconic. Disney needs iconic villains. That’s why it went with Vincent Price for the movie’s antagonist– Ratigan.
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s a big upgrade from Sherlock Holmes’ biggest nemesis hardly being described on-page and mostly existing to explain why Sherlock Holmes went out with a bang so ACD could move on from writing Sherlock Holmes. And yet, in adaptations that so desperately need a remarkable (vs. mundane but skilled) villain, expies of Moriarty reign supreme. It’s funny to me that ACD’s attempts to kill Sherlock Holmes now literally dance gilded all over the screen, failing to kill Sherlock Holmes despite their most magnificent efforts.
And yet, despite these obvious departures from the way that Holmes’ stories were set up, there’s almost a brilliance in how very Sherlockian even the most contrived of Disney Peril situations is handled, how it understands a Holmes-like character.
youtube
It’s not so much acting within the bounds of what originally characterized Holmes, but it’s I think how people came to feel about him: the slightly preposterous spirit behind why he’s so beloved.
A version of the tumble off Reichenbach Falls even happens and mouse Holmes and mouse Moriarty plummet off Big Ben together. This, after both are tattered and beaten in a fight scene that’s uncharacteristically intense for a Disney movie with both hero and villain getting their clothes torn and the hero being unquestionably battered and outmatched. Basil getting beaten just makes him look tired and like he’s at the end. Ratigan getting beaten just exposes his beastly inner nature. While Basil basically executes Ratigan with a final triumph (he even rings the bell Ratigan uses to execute his hapless gang!), he gets torn off his handhold himself and seems to fall down into the London fog below.
Only for the story to tell us,
Tumblr media
“Nah. Nah, Sherlock Holmes is going to live forever.”

14 Versions of Sherlock Holmes Ranked from Most to Least Likely to Set a Building on Fire in a Fit of Rage
CURRENT UPDATED LIST HERE
10. Robert Downey, Jr. — Sherlock Holmes & Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
Tumblr media
Okay, you might have expected Action Hero Holmes to be higher up on the list, especially considering he literally did set a fire in the beginning of the second movie. But despite the flack he gets for not being “accurate” enough, I love this Holmes for so many reasons, and one of those reasons is that he’s so gentle and soft-spoken. He’d set a fire in a second for a case, but he faces evil with more melancholy than anger and really isn’t naturally violent at all when you get down to it.
11. Hannah Drew — Baker Street
Tumblr media
Probably the most obscure one on the list, this fan-created Sherlock Holmes is blindingly intelligent and relentless, but also profoundly isolated, lonely, and deeply emotional. Still, the extent of her expressiveness seems to be playing obnoxious practical jokes when someone annoys her or shouting halfheartedly when she’s frustrated, not setting fires. (Also confession: she’s totally my girl crush. I would buy her all the ice cream in the world if she asked.)
12. Vasily Livanov — Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson
Tumblr media
This Holmes is full of easy charm with emotions that tend to be more prominent on the softer side; he’ll start crying the second his Watson does, and laughs loudly and freely whenever he feels like it, but when provoked by a villain he maintains his cool demeanor like it’s not any kind of a challenge. Like I’ve said before, this Holmes has super-chill trustworthy older brother vibes to me, so he’s almost totally unlikely to be a firebug.
13. Henry Cavill — Enola Holmes (links to trailer)
Tumblr media
While it’s true this Sherlock Holmes wasn’t the main character of this movie, we got to see enough of him to make a solid judgment, I think. And my judgment is that he’s one of the most gentle, mild-mannered ones out there. I mean, he might not have started out as a willing parent, but by the end of the movie this guy was volunteering to take in and raise his younger sister. Maybe he could be a fire-starter, but I just don’t see it so far.
14. Ronald Howard — Sherlock Holmes
Tumblr media
By far the most adorable version in my opinion, this Holmes is more full of bright humor and childlike wonder than fury of any kind. Like with every version, he has his moments of righteous anger, but guys, come on…this man once spent a whole scene chasing a honeybee around their flat to trap it carefully and set it free. He’s not setting anything on fire anytime soon—at least not on purpose.
These are all the versions of the world’s favorite detective I like so far, but I’m still watching all the ones available, so consider this an incomplete list. If anybody sees this and has a different opinion or a Sherlock to add, feel free to comment! And thanks for reading my rambling.

31 Days of Disney Villainy - Number 8
The 31 Days of Disney Villainy Continues! I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Villains from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film output. This rogue is Quickest Rat in the Race…but never say that to his face. It won’t end as nicely as that rhyme. Number 8 is…Professor Ratigan, from The Great Mouse Detective.
Tumblr media
Remember how I said that Ursula’s status was arguable, among Disney Villains? Well, that’s because this guy came first. Ratigan is basically the rodent version of Professor Moriarty, forever embattled with his rival, detective Basil of Baker Street – the Sherlock Holmes of Mousedom. In this particular film, Ratigan kidnaps a toymaker, planning to use him as part of an elaborate scheme to take over the kingdom, and eventually – you guessed it – the world. So, what makes Professor Ratigan awesome? First of all: Vincent Price. Second of all: Vincent Price. Third of all: VINCENT. PRICE. For those who don’t know, Vincent Price is one of my favorite actors, and I’m pretty sure it was his work as Ratigan that introduced me to his powerful, versatile, and mellifluous voice. (I say “pretty sure” because there were at least three or four other possible contenders there in my childhood, and I’m not sure which came first.) Price named this as one of his favorite roles, and you can tell he’s having a BLAST every second the character is onscreen. And, once again, the voice and the character are totally in concert; as recognizable as Price is, you just never feel that “behind the mic” quality I’ve mentioned. He’s just…right there! He IS Ratigan, and Ratigan IS him! I think perhaps that’s why Ratigan doesn’t get featured as often as other Disney Villains (that and the fact that “The Great Mouse Detective” is a somewhat underrated feature, in my opinion): with other villains, even if their voice actors are gone, dandy replacement actors have been found to take on the mantles of the roles for various spin-offs. But with an actor like Vincent Price, it’s almost impossible to find a perfect voice impressionist who can handle that iconic sound and do it perfect justice. (Lord knows Maurice LaMarche has tried though, recently…if they ever put Ratigan in Kingdom Hearts, I vote using either him or archival audio for the voice.) Price is not the only thing that’s great about Ratigan. As I said before, many point to Ursula as the villain who really set the standard for how Great Disney Villains work. I think several earlier villains had established the concept before, though you could argue Ursula cemented it, simply because others would follow her footsteps…BUT, I, personally, would say it was Ratigan who cemented it. There was a one-film-gap between this and “The Little Mermaid,” and considering the villain of “Oliver & Company” was, in my opinion, one of the most BORING villains Disney has ever put out (in fact, in my opinion, if we’re looking at only “The Great 58,” which is the focus of this countdown, he’s the second worst Disney Villain of all time), you can guess which formula they followed, in terms of how their bad guys worked. Ratigan, like Ursula, is equal parts funny and fearsome. Also like Ursula, this Napoleon of Crime does have ambitions of power, but he makes it VERY clear that the real reason he does what he does is because he legitimately just enjoys doing terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad things to people. Power is just a bonus, a means to an end. On that note, I love how this character is arguably one of the nastiest and most bloodthirsty of all Disney Villains – his song literally describes him drowning widows and orphans, presumably just for fun, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg – yet they actually manage to give him an edge of empathy. You see, Ratigan does not like being reminded that he is, in fact, a rat; it’s never directly stated in the film, but the implication is that he’s been prejudiced because of his species. Rats are typically seen as dirty, treacherous, sneaky, stupid creatures. Ratigan puts on the airs of a gentleman; he has an eloquent vocabulary, a sense of charm and elegance to everything he does, and dresses in fancy clothes that are very obviously too tight for his (relatively, to a mouse) massive framework. He tries everything he can to deny what he is and defy the stereotypes…yet, ironically, it’s his evil nature that only proves him the perfect example of how nasty rats can be. This is even evident in the climax of the picture, as Ratigan gives up the “battle of wits” with his hated enemy in favor of brute force, and lets his inner animal rise to the surface with terrifying intensity. (Also, for those of you on Tumblr: Felicia. I think the influence she has on me liking Ratigan, by extension, speaks for itself. That or I like her by extension because of Ratigan; either way, I think you get it.) Bottom line: aside from a couple of characters from “The Secret of NIMH” or “Redwall,” I defy you to show me a rat quite as menacing as Professor Ratigan. Tomorrow, the countdown continues with my 7th Favorite Disney Villain! HINT: “Now, Here is a Riddle To Guess If You Can…What Makes a Monster, and What Makes a Man?”
