Propaganda
Anne Baxter (The Ten Commandments, All About Eve)—her soft, gentle voice in "all about eve", those gentle eyes with something odd behind them, the way she flips from Sweet Innocent to Viper on a dime......there was something Built Different about anne baxter, man, and it makes her so good for playing people who are Built Wrong. also one of my favorite batmen villains (her joint episode w vincent price is a delight) and of course I'm obsessed with her columbo episode where she bosses around edith head and does fabulous movie star things for no good reason. and i would be REMISS if i didn't mention her slink—oh the slink—in the ten commandments...................pardon me i must go think of sinning again
Edana Romney (Corridor of Mirrors)— Look. It is definitely a case for your discretion. Edana Romney had only one major film role and then foundered in a Britain/Hollywood that didn’t like her look. But the film she starred in was also one she CO-WROTE and co-founded a whole production company to make happen, and it is a lavish, imaginative gothic romance where she runs around in fanciful medieval gowns and has incredible eyelashes. She was also known in later years as a Hollywood hostess who had popular “twelfth night” parties, gayest of all Shakespeare plays to have a party about.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

The prettiest murderer in that film. Just so beautifully evil as Nefertari.
Anne Baxter was part of my Bisexual Awakening. My family has a tradition that every Palm Sunday we watch The ten commandments on TV together... And starting from a very young age, I essentially developed a crushes on Anne Baxter's Nefertiri & Yul Brynner's Ramses. Dude, the woman was HOT! They both were! My crush definitely wasn't helped by the fact that Anne Baxter's costumes were a bit on the sheer side. She had a way of capturing you with her eyes, and I never understood why Charlton heston's Moses didn't just have a threesome with Nefertiri and Ramses. LOL
Her Nefertiri in The Ten Commandments was FORMATIVE TO ME. If not the hottest old movie lady, then she definitely played the hottest old movie character. if that makes sense.
Tumblr media
Look. Listen. I only *just* discovered her on a post from the Have You Seen This Romcom poll blog. Saw she had the same last name as me and went OOH hi hello. Went to her IMdB and saw she was born in Indiana like moi. I am now even more intrigued. Been eagerly telling my partner this, and he was like "maybe you guys are distantly related?" And after 2 hrs of going down the tumblr tag + her imdb photos, I'm In Deep(tm) and I can't stop looking at her like 😍 When I go to my grandma's house, bet your ass I'm gonna check my grandpa's genealogy and see if we're somehow related. Sorry that's not really propaganda I just got real excited, esp when I saw that the submission deadline was extended (bless your soul). Narrowing down the movies where she's hottest in was Hell tyvm. I've only just discovered her, she looks gorgeous to me in every movie still I see of her gdi lol.

chaotic book ramble so I can stop spiraling into the abyss: dark academia books you've heard of and probably already read edition
I need to talk about books I love to stay sane please stand by <3
Bunny by Mona Awad. I love this book SO MUCH. it's beautifully written, the characters are all unhinged women, there's murder, there's creation, there's a creative writing class. it drips with insanity and eroticism. reading it is like living a fever dream. you can picture the events of the book perfectly, but could never hope to explain it to anyone.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. this book is the entire world to me. I love the characters [they're all terrible and irredeemable people], I love the story [they kill a man then they kill their friend and also worship Dionysus], and I absolutely want a friend group just like the Greek class [to reiterate: they are all walking red flags]. it's a book you have to read once, then again, and again, just to notice more and more so you can analyze it and make deductions. at the end of the day, it goes beyond the age-old "moral implications of murder" and delves into "moral implications of love". don't ask me how many times I've read it. that's my red flag.
If We Were Villains by ML Rio. it was only recently that I read this over the course of twenty four hours, and I honesty have yet to recover. I'm not a Shakespeare girlie, but I still loved the way his work was so inherently and intricately woven into the story of the iwwv characters. it was transcendent. it was a tragedy, it was a love story, it was a comedy. it depends on your perception of it, I suppose. but I digress - it's a really good bloody book. expect the ending to make you cry.
The Picture of Dorian Gray, by our lord and savior Oscar Wilde. this, technically, can't really be classified under the textbook definition of "dark academia" since there's not exactly any academia (can Harry even read let's be honest here), but it goes in this list because VIBES. this is one of my favorite novels of all time, and another one I've read one too many times for it to not be a red flag. I mean, the name of my damn blog is my red flag. I love it so much. it's got everything, from art to obsession to murder to gay people to the most heartachingly profound lines you've ever read. I mean, why wouldn't you read it if you haven't already?
These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever. this one snuck up on me. towards the beginning, I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but by the middle, I was hooked. by the ending, I was shooketh. reading the author note, I was sitting silently in abject horror. more gay people, more obsession, more murder - what else do I have to say?
this has been a chaotic book ramble. thank you for being here <3

Hi! I just want to say that I absolutely love your writing and your art. City of Blank is my favorite comic by all reasonable measures (not counting my special interest) and your art style is so cool and unique that it’s inspired me to learn how to use half tones and rougher lines.
Mostly the point of this ask is that I wanted to tell you that you’re not alone.
Webtoon comic sections (and webtoon readers in general) are famous for their complete and total lack of reading comprehension. Maybe it’s because of the format of short episodes every week, which leads to reading spread out over time and in tandem with literally dozens of every series.
If I’m being less generous it’s because the vast majority of people are absolute idiots who believe the first narrative they see and parrot it forever, without ever caring to check the facts or learn new ones.
This is part of why Claude supporters are so vocal compared to the rest of the fandom - most readers simply see a clingy villain who almost definitely has a personality disorder. The people who care enough to actually read the comic see him as an apathetic but deeply relatable person, who is misunderstood by the world and has seriously messed up priorities. These same people are the ones who make fan art and cosplay because they actually care about the story.
My point is, don’t judge your comic off of the comment section. If you’re feeling generous, don’t even judge your fanbase. The people who care enough to donate on patreon, make fanart, cosplay, and post about CoB. Those are the people you should listen to. Someone once said “If you wouldn’t ask them for advice, don’t listen to their criticism.” That person clearly didn’t have anxiety and they make it sound easy. It’s not. But try to judge with the people who care over the people who don’t.
And even if your comic sucks (which it doesn’t)
You are still amazing as you are.
Thank you! ;v;
Tbh one thing I need to get better at remembering is......every WT comment section is like this haha. It doesn't matter if the writer is modern Shakespeare. Nobody is spared. I should just be grateful mine is (relatively) less toxic than some. I'll take confused people missing blatant details over biggots using slurs any day (tho don't get me wrong. I unfortunately get always at least 1-2 of those any time something remotely gay happens lol. But at least it's just one here and there).
Thank you for the kind words of reassurance!

Sci Fi Month Frank Herbert's Dune(2000)
So I talked about David Lynchs attempt at a Dune adaptaion ,but there have been other adaptaions of the story, with Denis Villenuves Dune PArt 2 currently in theaters by the time of this post, but the adaptaion I am looking at today was a 3 episode miniseries made for the Sci Fi Channel (Still never calling it Syfy ,I can be petty ) .Ive kind of avoided this version because welll......Its a early 2000's TV adaptation of an epic novel for the Sci Fi channel ,which is unfair,as I love a good miniseries but I'll admit I can be a snob sometimes, but over the years I have heard praise and to this day many people (My dad who is an old school Dune fan ) call tyhis the best adaptation of Dune
Tumblr media
In this 2000's miniseries Duke Leto Atredies (William Hurt ) is given control of Arakis by the Emperor Shaddam IV (Giancarlo Giannini) who uses it as a ploy to destroy Leto by giving support to Letos enemy the Baron Vladimir Harkonen (Ian McNeice ) to destroy the house of Atredies, but Letos son Paul (Alec Newman ) and Letos concubine Jessica (Saskia Reeves) escape ,join the native people of Arakis ,the Fremen to seek revenge on the Emperor and House Harkonen ,while also taking advantage of a prophecy
.....SO I enjoyed this a lot.Its not flawless but if you are in the right mood it is enjoyable .I will say it is not as grand as the Lynch or Villinuve films, its shot on soundstages and lacks the all star casts of those films....But what I like is its more Shakespeare then space opera ,very theatrical sort of sci fi .I actually like the sets(GEidi Prime in particualr is perhaps my fave take on the planet ).The costume design is where this shines ,I heard the costumes were inspired by Moebius (The French comic artist) and you can tell, the characters feel like they walked right out of a sci fi comic, and with the designs and colors this mybe my favorite LOOKING version of Dune .I think the three episodes tell the story very well, though the best written is part one,and part 2 feels a bit padded but it sticks the landing for part 3 .I also think this miniseries nails the darker parts of the story better then the 84 Dune ,mainly that Paul is NO hero
The actors are mostly good, though very few are my favorite takes on these character. Some stand outs are Karel Dobry as the enigmatic Liet-Kynes(My fave take on the character),Julie Cox in an expanded role as Princess Irulan,Barbora Kodetova is good as Chani ,Saskia Reeves is a very good Lady Jessica ,Jan Unger is a suitably slimey Piter de Vries ,and Matt Keesler is suitably villainous as Feyd .The big star gets of the miniseries are Giancarlo Giannini as the Emperor who is better then Jose Ferrer but still lacking a bit of gravitas ,and William Hurt as Duke Leto ,who I think does a fairly good job as the noble duke even if its funny he is top billed as a guy wh dies in the first part .The scene stealer of the series is our villain ,the Baron played deliciously deviously by Ian McNiece ,who might be my favorite take on the Baron ,he feels like a classic Shakesperian villain and McNice is clearly having a ball without going as over the top as Kenneth McMillian in the 84 film
If the miniseries has a weak point the weakest has to be Paul.Alec Newman is not bad ,in fact hes pretty good at anti hero Paul near the end....But his begining PAul feels like it is written younger, and he comes across too petulent and whiney
However I do reccomend this and it is very solid ,higly reccomended

Valentine's Day One Shot
(featuring an oc by @erraticeris) Dr. Two Brains was surprised by the knock on the door. "Huh. I wonder who could that be." The mad scientist spoke to himself. He wasn't expecting any villains coming by to see him today nor any packages. Two Brains was also sure Becky's friends were busy right now as well, so it couldn't have been them coming by. Dr. Two Brains decided to open the door where he was met with a horrific sight. "Hello sir is Becky home?" A boy around Becky's age asked. Two Brains did not respond. His body was frozen in place as his red/pink eyes became wide and transfixed on the boy's appearance. The young male looked confused and worried at the villain's frozen expression. "Um sir?" The young boy asked again. Trying to get the villains's attention and snap him out of his petrified state. Dr. Two Brains did soon snap out of his frozen state when the boy tried to touch him in order to hopefully spark a reaction. He did not expect the villain's reaction. "OWL!" Dr. Two Brains screamed in fear before racing away from the door to hide behind a couch. The boy was startled and alarmed by Dr. Two Brains fearful reaction. Soon Becky raced downstairs in a panic to see what her father was screaming about. "Dad what is going on?" Becky exclaimed with worry and alertness. Two Brains poked his head behind the couch and shakily pointed a hand towards the boy who was still standing in the doorway. "T..there is an owl k..kid right over there!" Dr. Two Brains exclaimed in a frightened tone. Becky looked to see where her dad was pointing. Her body relaxed as her expression became calm and slightly annoyed. "Dad that is just Owlbert. I told you about him before. His family moved here a while back and we met at school." Becky explained. The boy, Owlbert, just gave an awkward wave. "Well you didn't tell me the kid was part owl!" Dr. Two Brains exclaimed in an exasperated tone. Though he still did not move from his spot behind the couch. His mouse brain continuing to glow in a frightened, erratic, tone. Becky folded her arms. "Well his name is Owlbert. Violet and I talked about him openly before." Becky spoke in a frustrated tone. Dr. Two Brains crossed his arms and let out a huff. "Well just because his name is owl related doesn't automatically mean he is connected with owls." Dr. Two Brains tried defending himself. He wouldn't admit he didn't hear his daughter's conversations with Violet about this kid. Becky just sighed and rolled her eyes, not ready to deal with her dad's antics today. Owlbert gave a little cough to direct attention back to him. "Well sir, my family and I are all part owl. But we don't eat mice. Some members keep them as pets like any other person would." Owlbert explained as he hoped this would ease any fears and tensions Dr. Two Brains had about him. Dr. Two Brains just stared at the kid with a cautious and guarded expression. "Dad Owlbert's a nice person. Please go easy on him." Becky pleaded. Dr. Two Brains relented, the kid freaked him out, but he trusted his daughter's judgement. "Okay alright. Hi Owlbert what are you doing here?" Dr. Two Brains rudely grunted. "Oh I am here to pick up Becky and take her to the park. There is an area where literary authors are retelling the works of William Shakespeare in public." Owlbert explained in a slightly nervous tone. Becky's eyes lit up. "That sounds amazing. I'm ready to go right now if that is alright." Becky spoke. She hoped they would retell the story of Romeo and Juliet, her favorite play, at the event as well. Owlbert gave an elated nod. "Yep. I'm ready when you are." He exclaimed. Becky jumped up in the air. "Great. Bye dad. I'll be at the park." Becky stated as she raced towards Owlbert and ready to head out. Two Brains gave a wave. "Okay just be back before dark." The scientist called out. "We'll do." Becky replied and the duo soon left to head to the park. Dr. Two Brains let out a sigh and a soft smile. He was happy his daughter was making new friends, even if that person was an owl.

Bleeding Villains and Bloody Heroes
@malicious-compliance-esq's comments on my last meta regarding General Cornwallis's "clean broadcloth, perhaps, but bloody hands all the same" owing to Tavington doing the dirty work for him got me thinking about the role actual blood plays in this movie.
For all the violent situations they both end up in, prior to the final scene, the only blood we see on Benjamin Martin is other men's, and the only blood we ever see on William Tavington is his own. This stands in striking contrast to the rest of the movie, in which the only gore the camera shows us is on Patriot bodies: the cannon balls ripping off heads and legs, the torn and bleeding men in the Continental field hospital. Contrast them with the British soldiers, whose causes of instantaneous death include gunshot, tomahawking, bumping, and, apparently, surprise? (Brandon F's video analyzing the ambush scene is a resource I highly recommend). Regardless of the method, once a British solider is hit, the movie is done with him in almost every case. These deaths are presented as flippant in comparison to the noble sacrifice and suffering of the Patriot soldiers.
Tavington is the exception to this rule. Not only does he take a lot more killing, like a lot more, than his brothers in arms, but he takes a good bit of damage prior to that. There is blood on his face in a deleted scene in the officers' tent that initially looks like it could be someone else's, but a closer shot reveals a cut on his cheek to be the most likely source. There is blood on his shirt in another deleted scene from Gabriel's bullet grazing his side. Finally, there is blood oozing between his lower teeth as he says his final line, mostly likely from a cut in his mouth after being violently thrown from his horse. I don't think anyone involved in the making of this movie would argue that Tavington's blood represents his commitment to the cause of British dominance in the American colonies or even to his own aspirations. If that is not the case, though, then blood is clearly a signifier of very different things depending on where it is and whose it is.
Still, seeing Tavington bleed reminds me of an exchange between my other favorite villain of all time and the hero in that text. In Shakespeare's Othello, when Iago's machinations are revealed, Othello tells him, "If that thou be'st a devil, I cannot kill thee," and stabs him (Act. V, scene ii). Iago replies, "I bleed, Sir, but not killed." Iago is not a devil; none of Shakespeare's numerous memorable villains are. They are deeply flawed people with human desires taken to destructive extremes. The difference between the two villains is that Iago is one character in a play full of deeply flawed people with human desires whose flaws he utilizes in his destructive extremes: Othello's gullibility, Cassio's vanity, and Roderigo's stupidity. All of these characters, though, are so much less malevolent than Iago that he appears monstrous in comparison even as he remains very much human. In contrast to the cannon--and musket, bayonet, tomahawk, and shock--fodder the other British soldiers constitute, Tavington's injuries render him more human. He is fleshed out in the most literal possible sense.
At the same time, Martin becoming increasingly drenched in British blood over the course of an afternoon while not sustaining a single scratch himself makes him somewhat monstrous. Even without showing the audience where all that blood is coming from, that most of it is from a man who is unable to fight back compromises Martin's heroism in a way it arguably never recovers from. When Tavington does fight back, and then some, the injuries Martin takes are in service of vengeance, not the Patriot war effort. As far as the cause of American independence goes, well, he has no skin in that game. Literally.

so if someone was theoretically going to write a fic based off of the tags on that one very excellent garashir artwork you did... what would be a suitable villain role and/or scheme for garak to play? i know basically nothing about spy media and even less about james bond. i googled "most homoerotic james bond villain" and that was interesting but not helpful for this scenario... idk i want to really do this justice so i figured i could ask, since you came up with the idea in the first place and i guess that means this is a gift for you? and everyone else who liked that piece? thank you for your time :)
this is SUCH a charming question to receive!!! it's an honor that my art might inspire others to create! that said, here is my advice: i think you should follow your heart, mainly! i say this to everyone about everything but its very true, with writing especially, i think, you might want to write things that are especially interesting to you so that its exciting to keep going with them
personally, i don't watch a lot of spy media, i disliked james bond as a kid and i still dislike him now, so the character archetypes and plots from that wouldn't interest me enough to write a fanfic off of—i could read ds9 fic based off of them easily bc i love the ds9 characters!!! but. i couldn't write like that. therefore, i can't give you useful answers from that canon. i can give you this, but i don't know if it will be helpful: i think i would first start with the question—what about garak excites you? what puts you on the edge of your seat with him? what about julian—what actions do you like to see him take? what decisions of his make you giddy? how do you like to dig into his character? how do you like to dig into garak's? if you write down the answers to your question, it becomes the puzzle of how you can get everything you want out of the fic. the beautiful thing about the holosuite is that anything can happen at all, and while you're telling a spy story, it doesn't have to all be spy tropes. you could, if you wanted, play out a shakespeare play (your favorite shakespeare play, assuming you don't hate them all) as if it were a spy thriller! Sure, what's Twelfth Night as a spy thriller? We already have many characters playing with the fluidity of identity, going by different names, taking on different roles, gaining trust and acting on their own best interests. Just raise the stakes a little. is this insane? i feel insane. is it worth anything? i hope so. my ending point is: i am not so good at writing advice! i'm a much better drawer than a worder, but it's a gift already that you've said my art has motivated your desire to create!!!!!!!!! from there on—don't worry about what i want at all, don't worry about doing my work justice!!! take what excites you about the idea, take what excites you from your own ideas, and build it into something that makes you giddy to work on!!! i believe in you, and you have the world at your fingertips!!!!!!

Hi...... If you don't mind me asking, what are your top 10 favorite books ever (fiction)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before....Thanks...
Hello!! My top 10 would be
1. The song of Achilles - one of the most beautiful and poetic Greek retelling in the form of prose I've ever read . And I've never sobbed as hard as i did while completing this book
2. If we were villains - a book that would make you yearn for the ancient dusty libraries and make you want to be a theatre major ! But also underlining the thin line between passion and obsession. This book made me respect Shakespeare like never before
3. It ends with us - To be honest i used to think it's overrated until i read it. Colleen Hoover's writing style is beautiful and resonates with the modern world! Also beautifully and tragically took us on a whole journey of what happens when you're a victim of domestic violence
4. Harry Potter series - well you can't speak of fiction without speaking of Harry Potter! It was my first series and the one that got me into reading . It's a warm place for the child in me!
5. Verity - Another Colleen Hoover's masterpiece! This was a complete shift from her usual writing style , a psychological thriller. The wave of emotions after reading this book is a thin line between being appalled and being thrilled. A horrifyingly twisted book that will haunt you for days
6. Pride and Prejudice - one of the greatest classics of all times! Jane Austen's writing is so swoon worthy even today after 200+ years. If you're to yearn for a gentleman, it has to be the one written by Jane Austen. Most ardently, beautiful writing!
7. Looking for Alaska - A book I read in my prime reading years and I savour it's nostalgia till date. My teenage years were filled with John Green books and they absolutely increased my desire to read! This book also resonates well with the modern world and has an exquisite writing style with well written characters
8. The perks of being a wallflower - this book was the one that kindled the desire in me to be a clinical psychologist and love for the subject which I am pursuing. A great way of putting emphasis and mental health and also explores the love, passion, hurt, loss and beauty of teenage years and friends
9. Twilight series - If i were to read these books for the first time now, I would've hated them. But twilight was the first romance/ fiction I ever read and absolutely loved the vibe - rains and yearning! So, still love it
10. Divergent Series - Was my first Science - Fiction/ Dystopian read as a teen and absolutely loved! The female lead character ' Tris ' was my idol and had one of the most heartbreaking endings
( feel free to put in your favourite books and why you love them in the comments! I would love to know them)

Warnings: talk of injuries
Villain ran, no sprinted, to Supervillain's base. They held the book tightly to their chest. "I'm coming Hero."
They reached the hidden door and knocked on it frantically.
Supervillain opened the door. "Did you do it?" They asked with a yawn.
Villain glared at Supervillain and pushed the book into their chest. "Where's Hero?" They asked angrily.
Supervillain rolled their eyes and moved away from the door looking at the book. Villain followed them.
"Hero's fine." Supervillain said sitting in a plush arm chair. "I'm sure they will be happy to see you. I can see why you picked them."
"Where are they?" Villain said walking around the room.
Supervillain rolled their eyes. "Let me look through the book and make sure it's real before you grab them. I have to make sure you did your job right."
Villain huffed and folded their arms.
It took forever for Supervillain to look through.
Page by page.
Sentence by sentence.
Supervillain eventually closed the book and smiled at Villain. "You can see Hero now."
Villain sighed and followed Supervillain through the base until they were standing in front of a concrete room.
The door had three locks on it and there was a window to their right. Villain looked through it and saw Hero pacing.
Hero had a black eye and a split lip. They had blood on their shirt and their pants had rips in it showing scuffed up knees and bruises starting to form.
"What did you do to them?" Villain asked angrily.
"You picked a good one. They managed to pick the lock twice which resulted in some discipline. You understand don't you?"
"Let them out." Villain said softly.
"No."
Villain turned and glared at Supervillain. "You promised."
"Oooh, now that's where you're wrong. I said you could see them. I didn't say I was letting them go." They wrapped an arm around Villain.
"I did everything you asked for." Villain said angrily.
"Wrong again. I asked for the original copy of Shakespeare's plays. You brought me, and I will say it was a very nice try, a copy. So you did not hold up on your end of the bargain. So I don't have to hold up on mine."
Supervillain smiled at Villain.
"You're a monster." Villain said pushing away from them.
"Yeah yeah whatever. Think what you want to, but you still have to successfully complete a mission in order to get Hero back. So," They shrugged, "it's really up to you how long they stay with me."
Villain glared at them.
Supervillain waved them off. "Have fun."

Hiiii! May I ask for the character Ask game Magnifico Giganticus/Question 2 & Elijah Baley/Question 25?
2 (For Magnifico): Favorite canon thing about this character?
My favourite thing about him is that he’s CANONICALLY A DRAMATIC BITCH!!! Even aside from his clownsona (who’s already flailing and passing out and doing somersaults all over the place), once he goes all galactic-warlord mode he’s STILL delivering monologues and larping as a shakespeare villain like ??????
Tumblr media
HES SO EXTRA AND FOR WHAT!!!! truly you can take the clown out of the circus but you can’t take the circus out of the clown <3
25 (For Elijah): What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
I think my first impression was something like ‘eh he seems like a generic cop character’. and now (as with most asimov protagonists) it’s ‘this man is an unhinged high int low wis gremlin and I love him sm’. Also the fact that despite his abysmal rizz his robot partner fell for him so hard that he kept the galaxy going for 20000 years partly because of him??? Iconic. I miss him I need to reread the robot series so bad
Character ask game!

A Ranking of all the Cinderella Retellings I’ve Read
(Completed via a very unscientific method where I try to balance between “I liked it” and “It was well-written.” Your mileage may vary and my ranking would probably vary if I made this list again.)
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine: The Gold Standard. The retelling that started it all for me. Manages to twist the fairy tale (even dislike some parts of it) while remaining true to the heart of it. A+ worldbuilding, A+++ ending.
A Cinder’s Tale by Stephanie Ricker (in the Five Glass Slippers collection): A sci-fi retelling where Cinderella works a highly-dangerous space mining job. Fantastic worldbuilding with a wonderful ensemble cast.
Bella at Midnight by Diane Stanley: Cinderella meets Joan of Arc. Has a fantastic multi-first-person-narrator structure. Some of the fairy tale plot points are an awkward fit, but I still enjoyed it.
Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey: A fairly basic retelling with a fantastic autumnal atmosphere that tempts me to reread it every year, even though the story’s rather basic and the ending’s too convenient.
Cinder by Marissa Meyer: The famous science-fantasy retelling. There are things I don’t like about the series, but this first book is a solid retelling with some good twists. I like it less than several others on this list, but it’s too solid to rank it much lower.
The Stepsister and the Slipper by Nina Clare: If Georgette Heyer wrote fantasy. Cinderella’s spunky stepsister and a roguish hero manipulate each other in competing schemes. The worldbuilding’s sketchy and the ending’s very rushed, but I had too much fun to care too much.
Soot and Slipper by Kate Stradling: Fantastic twist, adorable relationship between Cinderella and her prince, a sweet and melancholy atmosphere, and an underwhelming ending.
The Reluctant Godfather by Allison Tebo: Wodehouse meets Cinderella, starring a very grumpy fairy baker. Gets a bit too slapstick, but its snarky, silly vibe is a breath of fresh air in a YA-romance-dominated retelling world.
Traitor’s Masque by Kenley Davidson: I love the Ruritanian atmosphere and the political tension between the two brothers, even though it’s at least 33% too wordy and the plot makes less sense the more you think about it.
The Windy Side of Care by Rachel Heffington (from the Five Glass Slippers anthology): Cinderella meets Shakespeare. Has a strong voice, a heroine with a ton of spunk, and a fun “fairy godfather”.
Fated by Kaylin Lee: Great magical-1930s worldbuilding. The characters were also solid. The plot was a bit too long and too convenient at points. But the worldbuilding is the draw here.
The Earl of Highmott Hall by Nina Clare: Another Regency fairy tale by this author. Probably technically better-done than The Stepsister and the Slipper but I found it less fun.
Silver Woven in my Hair by Shirley Rousseau Murphy: Short and sweet little book with minimal magic and a lot of charm, but I don’t remember much about it anymore.
Midnight’s Curse by Tricia Mingerink: Set in a European-castle + American frontier setting that’s unique (even if I can’t quite decide if it’s cultural appropriation), with some interesting twists and themes.
The Spinner and the Slipper by Camryn Lockhart: Mashes up Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin with just a touch of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. If I remember right, it did a decent job of it. The loving competition between Auberon and Titania was fun.
Letters by Cinderlight + Wishes by Starlight by Jacque Stevens: A Russian-ish retelling with some fantastic ideas (parts of it reminded me of Ella Enchanted) and unfortunately shaky execution. If it had been better written, it may have been one of my favorites.
Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix: I was pleasantly surprised by parts of this (mostly Ella’s character arc of learning to accept help) and hated other parts (the villains were completely unbelievable strawman caricatures). In the balance, I’ll stick it here.
Mask of Scarlet by Sarah Pennington: Set in a very unique and very complicated 1920s Chicago + Iceland world. Of the series, this was the book where I was best able to understand the worldbuilding, and I think the fairy tale was decently done, but even though I read it earlier this year, I remember almost nothing specific.
Princess of Glass by Jessica Day George: This one’s hard to rank because I think it was decently written, but I remember so little about it. I’ll stick it here, for whatever that’s worth.
What Eyes Can See by Elisabeth Brown (from the Five Glass Slippers anthology): Sweet, magic-free Regency-ish retelling with a very shy Cinderella and a nice stepfamily. It’s a bit basic, but it’s grown on me over time.
The Moon-Master’s Ball by Clare Diane Thompson (from the Five Glass Slippers anthology): Very strong autumnal and slightly spooky atmosphere. I remember liking this one well enough, but can’t remember much else about it.
The Other Cinderella by Beka Gremikova: This treats Fairy Tales as an external worldbuilding thing (people are cast in fated roles, etc.), which I usually hate, but there’s a twist at the end that impressed me.
A Gown of Spider Silk by A.G. Marshall: Short story retelling with one twist that’s kind of fun, but not quite my thing.
Another Midnight by Amanda Marin: Short-story Cinderella involving a time-loop. I remember almost nothing about it, but I think it was decent enough.
Cinders and Blades by Amanda Kaye: Short story Russian-influenced retelling. I remember almost nothing except that it disappointed me.
Slipper in the Snow by Alice Ivinya: Another short story. I remember even less about this one.
Rook di Goo by Jenni Sauer: I was promised Cinderella meets Firefly. I got an ensemble cast I didn’t connect with, worldbuilding I didn’t understand (what do they even do with their spaceship?), and a fairy tale that felt shoehorned-in.
The Stepsister’s Tale by Tracy Barrett: I don’t remember much except that I found it disappointing.
Broken Glass by Emma Clifton (from the Five Glass Slippers anthology): Mildly steampunk retelling imagining that the slipper fits the wrong girl. The humor here just isn’t my cup of tea, and the ending doesn’t make sense.
The Coronation Ball by Melanie Cellier: Short, shmaltzy and basic. There’s nothing that terrible about it, but for some reason there’s a lingering distaste that makes me recoil from it.
Cinderella (As If You Didn’t Already Know the Story) by Barbara Ensor: Written for lower middle-grade. One of those fairy tale retellings that thinks making anachronistic references is clever. It’s not.
Happily by Chauncey Rogers: Ugh. There’s one really dumb twist to the fairy tale that’s so dumb that it makes me angry just thinking about it, regardless of what else may be in the story (I don’t remember much else).
Mechanica by Betsy Cornwall: Double ugh. It had such a promising premise, but I hated so many things about this worldview that it gets the bottom ranking forever.

My favorite "perfectly reasonable" reactions to finding out Jaskier in the Netflix series version of The Witcher is now canonically bisexual
I am going to quote some of the responses to the revelation that Jaskier is bisexual and give a rebuttal to some of them.
____________________________________
The most common unhappy response: "He's only attracted to women in the books! He's straight in the books!" A possible rebuttal. = You can be a womanizer and flirt who sleeps around with a lot of women and still be bisexual. Just because it's all you've seen doesn't mean it's all there there is.
Tumblr media
______________________________________ "Another change from the books. This was probably the last straw that made Henry Cavill leave!"
This one is particularly annoying because it requires making Henry Cavill a thinly-disguised-homophobe. No. Henry Cavill did NOT leave because Jaskier was revealed as biseuxal. Jaskier's ballad about Geralt mentioning his "stupid hair" and "what for do you yearn?" existed in season 2. And Jaskier talking about applying chamomile to Geralt's "lovely bottom" was in season 1.
There is no official statement anywhere stating that Henry Cavill left because of deviations from the source material. Yes, Henry Cavill IS a fan of the video games and novels but there's no official explanation as to why he left. In fact the rumor that he left because they strayed from the books all originate from gossipy Youtube videos with no more substance than old supermarket tabloids.
There are countless other plausible reasons for Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher such as: 1. He wasn't happy with his Netflix contract. Netflix contracts are very restrictive and strict. 2. He thought he could return to playing Superman, unaware of the shakeup at DC / Warner Brothers that wound oust him from the role. 3. Henry Cavill has obsessions that become all-consuming he became fixated on the Warhammer franchise. 4. Henry Cavill might have wanted more pay.
That's just four of the many reasons that could be behind his leaving The Witcher.
Tumblr media
Seriously, the moment people start claiming that Henry Cavill left BECAUSE Jaskier is bisexual I have to point out a few things. 1. There were far bigger deviations from the books in Season 2, including the creation of a brand new villain. A change to the ending of the Beauty and The Beast-esque story and how Geralt reacts to the revelation about why his friend was cursed. The changing of a chracter's personality and having him die when he lived in the books. And also having Yennefer tempted to sacrifice Ciri. If you think these things are minor changes but he'd quit over Jaskier being bisexual... Well, that says a lot about you.
2. Henry Cavill was still in the show and involved in the show when they decided to confirm Jaskier is bisexual. Henry Cavill is IN this season that shows Jaskier with Radovid. This was filmed before he left. Before. 3. Jaskier's ballad about Geralt mentioning his "stupid hair" and "what for do you yearn?" existed in season 2. And Jaskier talking about applying chamomile to Geralt's "lovely bottom" was in season 1. 4. Henry Cavill was in the movie based on Neil Gaiman's Stardust novel. I suggest you google the character Captain Shakespeare, who does not exist in the novel Stardust. Just because YOU can't handle the idea of your favorite manly man having a non-straight best friend doesn't mean Henry Cavill agrees with you. Henry Cavill is not your magical shield for being a homophobe.
________________________________________ "Only Andrzej Sapkowski can make him bisexual. He's straight in the books." Yes, so we've been told many times. But Andrzej said he doesn't mind the change. You don't need to keep reminding us that Neflix was the first place to officially have Jaskier as bisexual. Your own insecurity is showing in that you have to remind us that the version you are obsessed with is straight. We're strictly discussing the canon of the Netflix show. _________________________________________________ "He's not Gay!!!! He's attracted to women!" Yes, he is attracted to women. And men. And possibly a pretty androgynous elf. The character was confirmed as bisexual, not gay. _____________________________________________
"Nice headcanon bro." Except it's not a headcanon. This was confirmed by Netflix, Joey Batey (Jaskier's actor), the showrunner, and show writer. You might like it but within the show version this IS canon. Jaskier and Radovid (now played by thirty-eight-year-old Hugh Skinner. It may never have been said in the books (We know! We know!) but it is a thing in Netflix.
We're strictly discussing the canon of the Netflix show.

___________________________
"They turned Jaskier into a ped0!" Rebuttal:
Oh, they did not! This is not the Radovid of the novels. He's not a teenage boy. He's a thirty-eight-year-old man. Yes, *Gasp* another deviation from the books. Speaking as someone who just had to adjust to Interview with The Vampire's Claudia being portrayed as fourteen-years-old and by a nineteen-year-old actress... Grow up.
Tumblr media
___________________________ "When you try to be a smart ass but the show shuts your dumb ass up. Try harder, Twink." Rebuttal: Umm... first, I don't think you know what a Twink is. It's not just a new replacement for the f slur. Also the show didn't shut me up. It's the show that confirmed the character is biseuxal. _____________________________ "Why is it always short haired, over-weight, ugly, middle aged, women who want this? ALWAYS!" I have the short hair but otherwise I don't think that really fits." ____________________________________ "I casually scrolled through TEN YEARS of your profile pictures to see what kind of person I was dealing with." Umm... What? Because I posted about Netflix confirming Jaskier is bisexual in the show and it wasn't negative?! Okay... ______________________ "They didn't even try to follow the books. For starters his name is Dandelion! DANDELION!" I got this particular one twice and I responded with "Actually, in the original Polish his name is Jaskier, which directly translates to buttercup. Netflix is using his untranslated Polish name. The novels were originally written in Polish." And for some reason that earned the response of "Oh! You're OLD!" I didn't realize there was an age restriction on liking a character who is meant to be in his forties but okay... (I'm forty-one and unashamed). ___________________________________
"Why is it always the weakling who can't even fight that they make queer?" Rebuttal: Umm... That's not true. John Constantine, King Shark, Deadpool... None of those characters are straight and they kick ass.
Tumblr media
Also Jaskier has a persona now of The Sandpiper where he helps the oppressed and outcast, and smuggles people to safety. When I compared him to The Scarlet Pimpernel this person got very offended because the Scarlet Pimpernel protected French nobles and all the French nobles deserved to die. I tried to remind him that in the novel the Scarlet Pimpernel rescued children. I haven't bothered to see their reply after that yet. I have a feeling I'm going to end up having to block someone.
________________________________ "I am tired of people saying Jaskier and Geralt are a couple and husbands!"
Rebuttal:
Umm... Sir, this is a Wendy's.
That particular comment was on a Facebook thread that had NO ONE saying any of those things. It was just a conversation about Jaskier and Radovid. ________________________________________ "Another character RUINED by Netflix." If you think a character is ruined because a depiction of him isn't straight, that's on you. _________________________________ "The whole point of Dandelion is he looks and acts gay but he's not!" I'm pretty sure that wasn't the point but okay...
Tumblr media
________________________________ "They made Jaskier bi for the normies." Yet again I find myself thinking: "That word doesn't mean what you think it means." Long ago, before the MCU, nerdom wasn't trendy or fashionable. It was specifically the refuge for outcasts and outsiders.
Fast forward to 2023 when nerdom has been relatively mainstream for the last decade or so. And now we have fans of The Witcher angry that "normies" have made Jaskier bisexual in The Witcher Netflix series.
Okay but... Despite the presence of general more acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, being bisexual or, as Jaskier's actor cals it, sapiosexual (attraction to intellect before gender) is still not considered normal.
People who identify as LGBTQ+ are still on the fringes of society. The very outsiders that nerd culture embraced and protected.
I have news for you, angry fan boys who are upset that the bard has been confirmed bisexual... you ARE the normies. When you start gatekeeping outcasts and outsiders (minorities) and whine about things being "Woke" because they allow in women, black people, or get upset and have a tantrum when they reveal a character might not be entirely straight... that's not the behavior of someone on the fringe. That's not original nerdom. I'm forty-one. I was a teen in the 90s and early 2000s. I've seen genuine nerdom. I was and am a Goth. We welcome and embrace those on the fringe, we don't shut them out because we don't want to think of our masculine manly man being friends with a non-straight medieval version of Freddie Mercury.

Dead People Book Club - Part 2
Tumblr media
Gotham’s cycles of life remained the same. That was Jason Todd-Wayne’s initial observation after returning to life. The fight for survival and the struggle between good and evil was ever present. It was both comforting and disconcerting to note that he had become a true embodiment of Gotham. A survivalist given the hope of life only to be snuffed out...and then resurrected.
Jason was a survivor long before getting dunked in a Lazarus Pit. He snorted at the irony of his resurrection as he tossed on a t-shirt, jeans and his favorite leather Jacket. He’d spent enough time resurrected, but only a few of those had been establishing his name as Hood. Still, he wasn’t sure he was glad to be back. The angry haze that he lived in most days made fond memories of the past blur. His persona as the Red Hood allowed him some relief from the way his thoughts twisted. It wasn’t much but it was a small relief.
Somedays he wasn’t sure if his family was really glad he was back. A trick of the pit, Dick would say. But life hadn’t stopped for anyone. He glanced in the mirror suddenly overcome with melancholia. Last week there’d been a public announcement of his return, but he’d yet faced any “friends” from his past. It stung to think that no one cared.
‘You were Robin. You’re the Red Hood, Jason. You don’t need “friends.’ He shook his head and mussed his hair before grabbing his keys. Getting caught up in his head wouldn’t do anyone any good. The day was young and he had errands to run before he was due to the manor for dinner. Things were still a bit rocky with his family, but it wouldn’t help to let the anger simmer long. Life goes on and so did Jason Todd.
_________
“That can’t be him...”
Hero felt her eyes water as she clutched her groceries closer. She stared at the back of the familiar figure as it moved steadily forward. The walk was familiar...the hair and set of those shoulders. She was so intent on solving the puzzle that she didn’t even notice when she began walking. Soon enough the walking turned into running. Maybe it was just her mind, but she so desperately missed her sort-of-friend, she had to be sure.
“Jason!” The name flew from her lips a bit louder than intended.
Quicker than she could blink, the figure whipped around, and she dropped her groceries. It was him! Her gallon of milk exploded, and she grimaced as eggs oozed out of a bag.
“Villain Origin story complete...” Hero muttered as she squatted and hurriedly scraped items into her bag.
“And you are?” Jason frowned as he crouched down to help. His shoulders were tense with wariness, but he wasn’t one to be rude to cute girls. He tucked a can of beans into a bag and glanced at the girl... long brown hair, hazel eyes, dimples, and olive skin. She seemed almost familiar.
“We went to Gotham Academy together. Octavia Kingsley?” A laugh escaped Hero as she finished retrieving her food. “I went by my middle name in Book Club. Parents were obsessed with Shakespeare. I heard you’d been kidnapped. I thought you... I’m really glad you’re ok! You look really good.”
Hero wanted to slap herself as soon as the last sentence left her mouth. ‘You look really good.’ She could feel the flush creeping up her neck. Jason was staring at her slightly as if she’d grown a second head. ‘Great. Now he thinks you’re weirder than he thought you were in school.’
“Our last meeting was... at the park near school. And the book was Tess of the D'urbervilles. We discussed it and...I think our next choice was The Trial by Franz Kafka. When you di...” She almost said died but thought better. “When you disappeared, I went ahead and read it for us both.”
“Shakespeare!” A sudden smile broke through Jason’s dumbfounded stare. “Yeah. I remember you now! We did finish Tess and decided to move onto Kafka’s book. Despite the snobs.”
He felt himself grinning. It’d been a while since he’d talked books with anyone...since before he died actually. Something warm wrapped around his heart. Shakespeare seemed to have genuinely missed him AND remembered him. She seemed to remember him as a friend, even though they’d been passing acquaintances.
“I thought your butler did all the running for you?” Jason politely grabbed the groceries and sent Hero a smirk.
“Mmmh.” Hero shot Jason a forced smile. “I’m actually attending college so...no butler for now.”
It wasn’t that she was ashamed of her new lifestyle, but you didn’t just announce living in Crime Alley. She felt a smile tug at her face as she noted Jason staring.
“You haven’t changed much since I last saw you. Still short.”
“Be quiet. Just because you eat Miracle Grow don’t be looking down on us fun-size creatures!” Hero mockingly waved a fist at Jason. “And I’m not afraid to buy another jug of milk and chuck it at your smug face.”
“Well, you’re more vocal than you used to be,” Jason glanced at his watch and swallowed a groan. “I’d love to keep talking, but unfortunately I’ve been summoned for a family dinner.” Reluctantly he handed Hero her groceries.
“It’s really great to see you again. Maybe we can start up our Book Exchange again.”
It wasn’t a good idea to get close to civilians, but Jason couldn’t help himself. Before he knew it, he was asking for her number and plugging it in.
“I’ll finish Kafka’s book and we can discuss it sometime maybe.” He waved at her lightly before hurrying for his bike. It couldn’t hurt to talk to someone that wasn’t a thug or family.
________________________________________________________________
“Doyle, best day ever! Jason is actually alive! I thought that was some bogus news feed. But no! He’s alive AND he remembered me. Better yet, he asked for my number!” Hero faceplanted on the couch and let out a happy squeal.
“Meoooooow...”
“I’ll feed you, I promise.” Hero mumbled into the pillow. She sighed happily at the thought of discussing books with her old friend.
“MEOW!”
“I hear you,” Hero stood and fed her cat and flipped the TV on. “You know. I used to like him. But that was high school. I’m just happy he remembered me.”
Doyle shot his owner a look that was too human. ‘Sure it was just a crush.’
“You hush. I’m going to watch Colin Firth while I finish my English paper. Pizza should be done by then.” She shook a head at herself...her life was pretty sad if her greatest conversations prior to today had been between her and Doyle.
‘Maybe that will change since Jason is back.’ Hero smiled to herself as she booted up her laptop. One could only hope that her old friendship wasn’t too old to be truly renewed.
___________________________________
Dinner went better than Jason had expected. A dinner with the Wayne family usually held some form of tension, especially with the ever-growing brood. Despite that usual tension Jason had felt surprisingly at ease. For the first time since he’d been resurrected, he felt seen and truly remembered.
Having a very observant family was annoying in the best of situations and infuriating in bad situations. Throughout the meal he’d received various stares and a few snickers from Dick’s direction. He must be smiling too much, quickly he slammed a frown on his face.
“So I’m assuming you need my help on patrol?” Jason threw down his napkin and cracked his knuckles.
“Father and I are able to handle things without--”
“First I want to hear the reason behind Jason actually talking during dinner.” Dick waggled his eyebrows. “Is it a girl? I bet its a girl. Fifty bucks says he got her number!”
Sometimes he really wondered if coming back to Gotham had been a good idea... Maybe there was a nice island he could disappear to?

for the ask thing: 001, doctor who
i’ve never watched any of it myself ^^; but i see all your rbs and idk i’m a bit curious lol
Thank you for following my Doctor Who reblogs :’D I’m not THAT deep into the lore of DW and I’ve only watched as far back as the Ninth Doctor, so I don’t get every reference but I still enjoy the show for the entertainment value.
Favorite character: It’s a tie between the Ninth Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston) and recently the Fifteenth Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa)
Least Favorite character: I can’t remember if there’s a character I outright LOATHE… but from what I remember, I always found the The Trickster to be a great, cruel villain. While I’m not sure if he appears in the main series of Doctor Who, he appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures spinoff. The Trickster’s whole deal was… making deals with desperate people. Such as switching the fates of a young Sarah Jane and her deceased best friend. Or making a deal with a dead man to marry a brainwashed Sarah Jane. I felt very sorry for the people he tricked. So, great villain but I didn’t like him!
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon):
Uh… Captain Jack Harkness/Ninth Doctor, Amy/Rory, The Lizard Lady/Her Female Companion (I’m sorry, I forgot their names), Martha/William Shakespeare (because Martha deserves to be immortalised in Shakespeare’s plays), Donna/Shaun
Character I find most attractive: Amy Pond
Character I would marry: Shaun. His wife and daughter show up with aliens at their house and he just accepts it. Doesn’t even blink. Donna’s best friend the Doctor has come back as a new reincarnation and is now living at their house? Shaun just accepts it.
Character I would be best friends with: Rose
A random thought: Will David Tennant return to the series again?
An unpopular opinion: As much as I adore David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor is kind of a jerk and his storylines got far too serious and grandiose
My canon OTP: Uh… Clara/Danny. Their story made me emotional… Also, I haven’t watched all of the Thirteenth Doctor’s run but Thirteen/Yasmin looks cute. I hope they became canon? We invented a whole other Tenth Doctor clone so that Rose/Ten could be a thing in some form. SURELY Yasmin gets her own Thirteenth Doctor clone?
Non-canon OTP: Rose/Martha. Why pine over the Doctor when they can date each other
Most badass character: Martha. This quote still lives in my head rent free: “I travelled across the world. From the ruins of New York, to the fusion mills of China, right across the radiation pits of Europe. And everywhere I went I saw people just like you, living as slaves! But if Martha Jones became a legend then that's wrong, because my name isn't important”
Pairing I am not a fan of: Rose/Doctor in a romantic sense
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Martha deserved so much better
Favourite friendship: Rose & Ninth Doctor

thinking about one of my least favorite fiction tropes which is taking an eccentric, campy, flamboyant villain, reforming them and - as soon as they've stopped being fully evil - immediately taking away their eccentric traits and making them dress and behave like some random dad or office worker.
there's nothing wrong with reforming that type of villain, ofc! but it just always annoys me (and makes me kind of sad) when they loose their flamboyance and eccentricity as a side effect of becoming a better person - not only because it makes the character more bland and takes away from what made them unique and enjoyable in the first place, but also because it equates traits like flamboyance with villainy and evilness, as if it is impossible for a character to become a better person while still wearing glitter and campy over the top outfits or talking like they learned how to speak from a 'best of Shakespeare' collection.
a villain can reform and heal from their harmful personality traits and behaviors while still keeping their harmless ones, they don't need to be turned into a completely unrecognizable person to get better! They can become a good guy and befriend the heroes and still wear neon colored outfits with gold details and oversized fur coats or go on a dramatic monologue like an aged hollywood diva because their favorite restaurant got closed! those traits aren't mutually exclusive...!
