other speculation about tonight's episode for those interested (aka throwing shit at the wall, seeing what sticks, etc. the usual. also i'm bolding the TL;DR stuff bc it's long):
jimenez lead, ATN/roys [do something], then mencken wins. (talked about this here)
connor splits the vote for a bit but eventually drops and endorses mencken
mencken agrees to block the deal, jimenez refuses to work with the roys. i feel like this is pretty clear already but i think it'll be made explicit. the election will be not just ab ideological issues but the company, obviously, and anti-deal anti-ideology roman just sees mencken as their best option and doesn't give a shit about any political beliefs, shiv is the least anti-deal of the three which helps her because she wants jimenez anyways bc she's the Liberal Good one (sure, shiv, sure), and ken is trapped in between the two. basically, roman pro-mencken, shiv pro-jimenez, kendall unsure (jimenez will not block mattson deal/work with kendall and mencken will, but ken's performative liberalism makes it difficult for him to back mencken). i think ken will end up backing mencken anyways because he cares far more about his own success than america's, and i also think he would justify it to himself by saying, like, 'look if i'm in charge at waystar i can make actual change, i can't do that if i'm not CEO, so i gotta back the person who will make that happen so that way i can help society' or whatever it is he tells himself lmao
there's gotta be something with shiv pregnancy. the two biggest threads left dangling rn are shiv pregnancy and kendall-sanctioned logan smear campaign, and i'd be v surprised if the latter doesn't make some sort of appearance in the funeral episode, and idk if they'd try to work in both those threads in the same hour when so much else is going on. i also don't think they'd mention the pregnancy in ep4 and never again until the finale which meaaans something happening with it this episode. idk if it means reveal or not (because frankly it will not be shiv's fucking focus rn lmao) but it's gotta come up somehow
honest to god no fucking clue what the shocking thing will be. i don't think it'll be the election outcome itself (either mencken or jimenez, both expected) so i feel like it has to be in either the way it plays out or some sort of roy-related reveal. something i can see happening, maybe, is some sort of ATN fuckup -- they call it too early, they send out false information, some minions get the wrong order, idk -- that they have to scramble to either fix or lean into. like, their action decides the election, but it was a fuckup. it could work, i think, because it would show how unstable american 'democracy' is -- it rests in the hands of people like the roys and companies like waystar and news media like ATN, and one mistake could quite literally decide the future of america. that's how unstable things are. idk, maybe an anchor misreads a prompter and says something that's taken as an incitement to violence, maybe a phone call cuts out and orders are misheard then followed, just something that shows how terrifyingly flimsy our entire political process actually is. again this is literally ALL JUST SPECULATION i have no fucking clue how things will play out i'm just trying to figure out how things could maybe go
i think the election will be a backdrop for other huge developments in roy family life but not to the extent that con's wedding was -- i think there are probably big things that happen that are unrelated to the election, but i do think it's going to be election focused, mostly just bc i would be kind of disappointed if it wasn't lmao. but seriously though succession is such a political show (even when it's not explicitly about politics) that i'd be very very surprised if they eschewed it entirely to focus on family matters, especially bc so much of succession is about the interrelation of familial abuse, capitalism, and political fascism. this episode is the perfect fucking storm for them all to come together.
rome/ken fight from the teaser possibly this ep? just looks like they're wearing the same clothes/in the same room based on the episode trailer. not sure though
again really don't know what the Shock will be. i can see a nailbiter but a Shocking Twist? we shall see...

You can start writing descriptions, they can be as simple as a sentence, it's better than having media undescribed, I promise. Simply don't lie to the reader.
So, for anyone starting to write image descriptions, there's a method that I am going to call the Who, What, How, Where Method It works like this. In one sentence describe:
Who is in that picture (or what, if it's not a person)
What is the person/thing doing
How is the person/thing doing that action
Where is that person/thing doing that action in a certain manner
Note that sometimes the How and Where can be skipped, but the Who and What are essential. Example:
Tumblr media
Who: Arcee and Aileron
What: Kissing each other. Arcee has pulled Aileron into a kiss
How: Passionate. Additional information: Aileron is surprised
Where: Yellow background (there's no actual information)
Basic description: Arcee pulling Aileron into a passionate kiss.
A bit more detailed description: A photo of Arcee pulling Aileron, who looks surprised, into a passionate kiss.
A more detailed description: A panel from Transformers IDW of Arcee pulling Aileron, who looks surprised, into a passionate kiss. They are over a warm yellow background.
There are other methods but this can be sueful to begginners and people that do not have the energy to do more.
Also, descriptions can't be written in small or bold text, italics, under a read more, with colors, fancy fonts or similar things.
TL;DR: Descriptions are important, even if they are short. You can do descriptions by describing who, what, how and where of a picture. Who is in the picture? What are they doing? How are they doing it? And Where are they doing it? The Who and What are essential, the How and Where can be skipped sometimes. You can expand the description but never put it under a read more, with small text, italics, bold, colors or fancy fonts.

wow it’s been a while since I’ve done a little ask game, ty @wackmxter ✨
(apparently the app doesn't let you copy more than one line of text at a time 🥴 so now that i finally am opening my laptop this week here i am)
15Qs / 15 Mutuals
lol idk if i even have 15 (active) mutuals these days so uhhhh i'll just tag @asthma-goddess @actualhero @j1r4ch2 @uglyluckylucky and if anyone else wants to do this one go nuts, i'm not tagging more people because i'm shy 👉👈
1. Are you named after anyone?
nah my mom got my name from a baby name book in the 90s BUT what's wild is that she gave me and my brother Irish names based on the fact that she was told my grandma's birth family was Irish... which is wild because we had no proof of that until like 2 years ago when she was able to find half of my grandma's birth family thru those genetic testing family tree sites. so it's a good thing that was true because it would have been kinda weird in hindsight if we weren't
2. When was the last time you cried?
um 🧍‍♀️. like an hour ago while i was in the shower... i think i'm PMSing a little bit because it kinda came on suddenly and then i was fine lol
3. Do you have kids?
no
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
listen if you lived with my boyfriend you would too
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
hmmm idk beyond basic physical appearance stuff like height/hair color/whatever i guess maybe their sense of style and how they seem to present themselves?
6. What’s your eye color?
hazel
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
bold of you to assume those are mutually exclusive, person who wrote this initially! anyways both.
8. Any special talents?
i think i'm fairly perceptive, and i'm also good at blowing bubbles
9. Where were you born?
colorado 🏔🦌⛺
10. What are your hobbies?
scrolling on my fucking phone forever if we're being real but i also like cooking, baking, video games, listening to podcasts, and maybe someday getting back into reading
11. Have you any pets?
no
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
i played soccer for like. a year not even when i was 6 or 7. i'm a delicate flower though so sports weren't really ever my thing lol
13. How tall are you?
5' 1"
14. Favorite subject in school?
science or biology specifically in hs
15. Dream job?
been thinking about this lately... currently i work in the R&D department of a biotech company and i like it a lot for the most part, and in general i really enjoy being a research scientist but i don't think it's a job i want to be in forever... in no small part because the role i'm in now is sort of "entry" level, so you're sort of naturally expected to rise through the ranks over the years but these days it just gets harder and harder to do that without a master's degree or higher. so i think i might go back to school once i decide what kind of specialty i would want to be in and then i think settling into a more established scientist role could be nice. but honestly i also think i'd make a pretty decent lab manager since i'm insane lol. also considered pivoting into science writing for a spell because i think that could be something i could do on a part time/freelance basis if i find myself in the family way but idk.
tl;dr i currently do science and would like to keep doing science without ruining my hands by pipetting for like 40 years

Buck/Evan 601 Meta - Integrating Buck & Evan via Eddie’s Affirming Words
**Longish post. The tl;dr of it is in bold.
Honestly the more I think about it, 601 is no joke. In terms of Buddie stuff, it’s basically a hybrid remix of mostly 217 &  bits of 218 and it slaps! The biggest thing I realized when I watched those two eps again is that eddie putting his feelings for buck into words is critical to buck’s process of stepping into himself more fully. Really, it’s critical to buck and evan integrating and him realizing that those aspects of himself are both beautiful, valid, and worthy. evan (aka the man) doesn’t need to keep referring and deferring to buck (aka the role he plays at work). buck is amazing BUT SO IS EVAN.
Even by 601 after everything buck has been through over the course of the show and all the ways he’s grown and matured, buck does not see evan’s worth much at all. That’s why he’s constantly trying to prove himself. Buck is more than valuable and worthy but everything buck does is never enough because evan is still inside him struggling to feel like he matters above and beyond the buck of it all.
Buck is going to do some heavy lifting this season in terms of discovering his self-worth as we all know. We also know that everyone is going to support him in that process, especially eddie. But what that support will look like is a part of the question.
I think eddie’s support has to be related to his Boggle word search. Eddie has to find the words to tell buck that he matters and is important to him and to Chris above and beyond his role as a firefighter and his upward career path. Eddie has to tell buck that he connected him to resources for chris (aka Carla) as evan aka out of uniform outside of his buck mask. He saved chris during the tsunami as evan, out of uniform. He saved eddie during the shooting as evan. He took chris to the zoo as evan. He accepted the responsibility as evan of taking care of chris if something happens to eddie. “Because Evan, you think you’re expendable but you’re wrong.” He helped eddie through his breakdown and healing process as evan. He support chris through eddie’s healing by taking him to school, helping with homework, and being there for him as evan. But buck doesn’t see or understand any of this. Buck needs to top off his windshield whipper fluid and clean the glass so he can see the road to his own healing. Evan has been present and showing up for the Diaz family but buck doesn’t realize that. Evan the man is worthy and loved.
We’ve all been begging for eddie and buck to talk about the shooting but we’ve been starving for that at least in part because it will hopefully be the conversation that helps buck and evan integrate by eddie pointing out that Evan Buckley saved his life in every way. Buck is eddie’s partner at work and evan can be eddie’s partner in life. He’s already stepped up and leaned into that, he just needs to do it as an integrated, whole, authentic version of himself.
The lasagna dinner was bobby’s recipe because buck doesn’t realize that evan already feeds the Diaz Family daily and can love and be loved by the Diaz family as himself, whole and beautiful - buck and evan integrated. Eddie has to find the words this season to tell him that, to say thank you, to say I see all of you, to say I love and respect all of you, to say that all of you is worthy and always has been. Buck has to spend the season getting ready to actually hear what eddie has to say about him and to feel it and to believe it when eddie says it.
Holy hell this is gonna be good!!!

Watched Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness today and uh...
It’s a bit...messy. It’s hard for me to say I liked or disliked it for a multitude of reasons. It was directed by Sam Raimi and boy does that show because the movie is shot like a 90s horror flick, it’s actually really cool in that aspect. Where it feels messy though is, as you’d expect, with how it fits into the rest of the MCU.
I’m not going to spoil anything explicitly down below, but I will mention vague details that could be considered spoilers so if you want to go in spoiler-free, don’t read this. Basically, the TL;DR is: the movie was good as a Sam Raimi movie, bad as an MCU movie, and overall probably a 6/10.
Look, I’ve watched WandaVision. I thought it was a pretty OK show. It’s where I first began to notice Marvels tendency to all-but-bold-face-lie to you about the direction the show/movie is going in, which isn’t great, and is one of the major gripes I had with this movie but w/e, that’s not why it’s messy. What’s messy I think is just that both A) you really need to watch WandaVision in order to even attempt to grasp Wanda’s character in this movie, and B) even if you do, her character still feels...like a bit of a major pivot from the last time we saw her.
I’ve said before that I like that Marvel seems to be leaning into the fact that, yes, people watch your other movies. Maybe not all of them, but at least enough to get a general understanding that things happen outside of this movie that relate to it somehow. The rub I have isn’t with the fact that you need to watch WandaVision to understand this movie, it’s the fact that even if you do you probably still won’t understand this movie. I’m not sure I understand this movie.
Also, you don’t need to have watched this show, but if you watched the What If...? series too then you basically have the entire cast of characters for this movie. Fuck, you almost even have the plot to this movie.
Honestly, without getting into spoilers, I’ll just say this movie is certainly not helped by being related to a series of movies and shows. It makes previous entries feel a little pointless and future entries a little less interesting.
America Chavez was actually pretty interesting of a character though and I am eager to see where she ends up. Although, I say that but she strangely wasn’t in the movie all that much. Like, she definitely was...but she also really wasn’t. It sort of felt like the movie should’ve been an American Chavez movie w/ Doctor Strange tacked onto it (similar to the last Spider-Man), assuming they wanted it to be a good intro for her character, but instead she sort of got cast aside partway through the movie and then comes back at the tail end, and overall she doesn’t add much but plot-convenience. So...yeah, I might’ve just talked myself out of liking her character but whatever I thought the actress did a good job so I’ll keep an eye out for her later I guess.
Also also, and this is sort of a spoiler, but fuck them for butchering the fuck out of the Illuminati. I can’t help but feel like them adding that in this movie was them saying “see we did it” and then they never do it again because at this point, from a non-comic reader perspective, it might come across as odd to bring in the Illuminati when they showed it in this movie and they turned out to be a bit of a joke.

Random rambling on white in a bio description
[I don’t think I use Tumblr right but I’m just going to do basically a diary entry to myself but I’m going to post it online like a moron instead]
So a few days ago I read a post that I didn’t agree with on any level, with the TL;DR being that minorities are being forced to shoehorn in their race / identities into their bios which is just not true. The main reason I don’t think that is true is that people actively like to put identifiable information, willingly, into their bios especially when it can mean finding a community that is similar to you, for safety, community, and what not I don’t think it’s a force, and I really didn’t agree with the idea that their info undermines any work they post ala Art, Writing, etc. People LIKE labels that they can apply to themselves and to things and even, including when it’s wrong, to others. It gives us a sense of self as people and that’s [Usually] a good thing, it just starts to become wrong when that is no longer a thing for individuals to decide and especially wrong when it’s a large group applying a label to a smaller group by force. Putting that info doesn’t demean you, or your work, or your person, if anything it’s kind of you and brave of you to put that out there for strangers to know.
The main thing that’s stuck with me is moreso why I don’t put say white into my bio because I’m a white gay 25 year old cis man, and I think it has a lot to do with that just looking innately bad to me. I’ve never interacted with someone in a positive sense who ever mentioned that they’re white as a pride thing or put any value into being white in person, and online I think it looks even worse with the rise of antisemitism among whites and the obvious White Supremacy movements. The OP would argue that I don’t do it cause I feel like my race is “Default” when in reality I don’t do it because there’s basically nothing to be proud of in being white or identifying as white. My life long friend who is now happily married and has a kid placed a lot of value in his Meximerican upbringing [His own wording] and told a lot of fun stories based on his family culture, but for me the only love I have for my family tree is in my immediate circle, so mother - father and that’s it. There’s nothing prideful to my racial identity at all or even worth talking about in a positive manner. Like yaaaay I’m the same race as Christopher Columbus, a mad mass murderer who invaded indigenous lands and pillaged them for any and all valuables while killing every single person who didn’t lay down and die that’s soooooooooooo wonderful, or yaaaaaay, I’m the same race as a bunch of puritans who forced their way onto a different country, genocided all the people there causing the long, incredibly violent and racist history of the US, wooooooooooooot......
Obviously I know I can be wrong to an extreme degree, but I really don’t think I’m wrong on this bit when it comes to myself. To me putting the label of “white” on yourself is pretty close to putting “I’m a giant asshole” in bold on your forehead. That’s not universally true obviously, but it definitely doesn’t fill me with confidence. I don’t have the same view when it comes to putting a cultural identity up there, like if you’re Chinese or Irish or German or Spanish that’s all well and good, it’s just the specific use of “white” that tends to bother me. Maybe I haven’t been exposed to the right person, but it’s probably the last piece of info I’d ever want on someone online and in IRL if I hear you mention the words “Pride” and “white” in the same sentence I don’t think I’ll text you back ever. To me there’s an incredibly different context between putting “Black” or “POC” and whatnot on your bio and putting “white” on there.
... This is one of those posts that in 5 years someone will bring it back up to me with it being potentially problematic and I’ll implode right?

referring to any of my ocs, or any canon characters, as "chonky" or "larg" or any actively negative or infantalizing descriptor term for "fat" will get you blocked immediately. idc!
if one of my ocs sets a boundary in character, even if i do not state i am setting it in the tags,.please follow it!
everything here is more or less canon t my oc au unless specifically stated otherwise or it would actively contradict smth else (M!As can be explained prolly I'll try to do that . later
if you mention interactions between my ocs with others ocs , you get a free 1 affection of your choice
resending asks that have been asked in the past to characters that didn't answer them would be cool....... btw.....
all of the ocs in my rw toyhouse folders are askable and interactible at any given time!! keeping this in mind, however, I generally will answer for them in the current timeframe of whatever rp I am focusing on
please try to avoid mentioning irl stuff!

A not-so-quick how-to for Ao3 work skins
Ao3 has some pretty powerful customization tools at your disposal - if you know how to use them. Did you know this entire time you could change your text colors, size, background colors, outlines, underlines, overlines, and even fonts of your works? It's fairly easy to do - you only need a little knowledge about markup languages to get started. The way this is done is through classes and the clever application of some simple CSS. Though I've written this guide around using my Obey Me coloring and work skin, the principles are applicable across anything you may want to do with your Ao3 styling.
I've done all the heavy lifting this time around, and have actually created a very, very simple skin that you may want for the purposes of your Obey Me fic including:
Unique colors for each character (sticking to WCAG 1:3 minimum contrast ratio for accessibility)
Heading font and size styling (separate from character colors)
Styled 'pullquotes' for written letters/passages/quotes (at 75% size)
Make sure to keep checking back for updates - I'll put word out here on my tumblr whenever I update, but I've also created a codepen (work skin CSS found in the CSS tab) with the latest version of the skin that you can use to play around in.
Just a heads up before you start: there is a bit of a learning curve, but I have tried to make the explanation as simple as possible, and hopefully provide enough tools and knowledge that you can run with what I've given you and start creating your own styles.
1. Markup: The Basics
I'm sorry - no matter how simple I try to make this work skin, you're going to need at least a little understanding of what markup languages are and how they work. But don't fret: I've had a few years experience now teaching this to absolute beginners so hopefully by the end of this tutorial you'll be feeling like a real Hackerman.
So what is Markup? A tl;dr
Markup is a set of instructions used to tell a program (in this case your internet browser) how something should behave. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language and is likely the markup language you'll encounter most often. Ordinary text like you would type in a word document is meaningless to a computer browser - it doesn't know how to read. You need to talk to it in a language it understands so that it can translate your wonderful words into something that appears in your browser. This is done through the use of 'elements'.
Like how you know "words captured in these quotation marks" are quotes (or text written in parentheses is related to but non-essential to the main body), elements are essentially markers that indicate how a thing should be read. In HTML, these elements are denoted through angular brackets <> containing the necessary info that your browser understands. These often consist of an opening tag <[element type]>with content within, followed by a closing tag</[element type> denoted through the use of the "/" slash. Every element that has been opened must always be closed. Common tags include:
<p></p> for paragraphs
<em></em> for emphasis (typically displayed as italic)
<strong></strong> for strong (typically displayed as bold)
<h1></h1> for your highest headline (and subsequent-level headings use 2-6)
<div></div> for generic sections or blocks
<span></span> for specific selections of text.
<a></a> for anchors (links)
<img> containing images <- this one doesn't have closing tags because it's special
and more!
Everything you see on the internet rests within tags like these. You don't see them because they're only for your browser's eyes. Even your fics are formatted with this - though Ao3 does it automatically. You can freely switch between Markup (HTML) and Rich Text Formatting up in the top right corner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Attributes
Attributes are additional information you can add to an element. Some attributes are essential, like a href (hyperlink reference) for anchor elements. Some are additional information used to differentiate between different identical elements like a class or id. It's this latter, non-essential attribute we're going to be utilizing for our work skins.
Once you have your fic in Ao3, make sure to switch over to the html editor. From there, you are going to find the element that you want to change the look of, and we're going to add a class.
We do this by finding the open tag of an element. That will probably be a <p>. Inside those angular brackets, after the name of the element, we are going to type class=""
Tumblr media
What we've done there is create a field for the class, but we haven't actually given the element a class yet.
It's always a good idea to name classes that describe the content, not what you want it to look like. You could change your mind down the line, but then you're stuck with a class called red that's really changing the color to blue. So rather than calling a class "gold", you might instead give it the name "Mammon" as it indicates when Mammon is speaking. This is known as Semantic markup.
Here's a few things you need to know about classes:
Class names cannot contain spaces. We use spaces to delineate new classes in the same element (like commas to separate tags on tumblr).
You can use as many classes as you want, as many times as you want.
They are case-sensitive.
You can add classes to all most html elements. That means that you don't have to just make entire paragraphs a particular style.
I have already specified several classes in my existing work skin. These are [Luci Mammon Levi Satan Asmo Beel Belphie Dia Barb Luke Sol Sim Heading pullQuote] - remember that these are case-sensitive. Feel free to use any one of these, or use your own! Put your chosen class name between those quotation marks I had you make earlier like so!
Tumblr media
These don't actually do anything just yet. For that, we need to now head on over into our work skin.
2. Introducing the work skin: CSS
Now that we hopefully have our heads wrapped around the basics of elements and classes, we can start using that to make things look interesting. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheet. HTML gives the browser structure, CSS gives the browser style.
But first, we have to create a new work skin.
Go to your Ao3 Dashboard and up in the top left underneath "Profile" and "Preferences" you should see an option for Skins. It'll land land you in "site skins" by default, so make sure to click on My Work Skins. From here you can click on Create Work Skin in the top right corner.
Tumblr media
In the "About" section, make sure Work Skin is selected, and give your new skin a title!
Tumblr media
Feel free to also include a description for your own sake. Now. Onto the fun part!
Below the "About" section, you should see a box labelled CSS. In that box, feel free to copy+paste the styles below into that box:
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed;}
#workskin .Mammon { color: #e5a71c;}
#workskin .Levi { color: #e26600;}
#workskin .Satan { color: #00c117;}
#workskin .Asmo { color: #ff00bd;}
#workskin .Beel { color: #e80b00;}
#workskin .Belphie { color: #4f08b5;}
#workskin .Luke { color: #00c0ed;}
#workskin .Dia { color: #9b0000;}
#workskin .Barb { color: #007215;}
#workskin .Sim { color: #c1ac44;}
#workskin .Sol { color: #757575;}
#workskin .Heading { font-size: 1.25em;}
#workskin .pullQuote { text-align: center; font-size: 0.75em; display: block;}
This can also be found in the CSS section in this codepen. (disclaimer: tumblr may or may not mess with the line spacing when you copy things over. After you've copied, save your work skin and then reopen it in "edit" - Ao3 will automatically format your work so that it's nice and clean).
So what's actually happening here?
Let's read from left-to-right, top-to-bottom - because that's precisely what CSS does. Feel free to skip this part if you're not interested in creating your own styles and you're happy to just copy and paste existing work skins :)
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
This first part here is what is called a "selector". Here, we're specifying what exactly we want to target in order to change its looks. Every character, including the spaces, symbols, and capitals matter.
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
#workskin is specifying a unique ID within the HTML - one that encapsulates everything that you want to apply the work skin to - so basically your entire work. This is absolutely necessary in order for the work skin to actually function. We didn't create this ID in our HTML because Ao3 (will) create it for us automatically down the line.
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
Following the work skin id, we have a space, a period, and then - hey! That's a class name! The space between the ID selector and the next part indicates we're looking for things inside this particular ID. Periods are used to indicate classes. When targeting a class, you use the period, followed by the class name. So if you're targeting your Levi class, you would write #workskin .Levi . If you were targeting a class that you created in your html, you would write #workskin .[classname] (removing the square brackets, of course).
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
Now it's time for the fun stuff - the rules. Once we've targeted what we want to style with our selector, we use curly brackets to contain all the "rules" that we're using to make the browser appear a certain way.
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
We start with our property - or what we want to change. In this case it's the text colour, denoted through 'color'. Yes. It's American spelling. I have no control over this. Find a simple list of css properties here! There's loads, but the ones that are probably of most use to you at this point are color, font-size, font-weight, text-align, text-decoration, and display. Make sure to put a colon after the property - that links us into the next step.
#workskin .Luci { color: #0071ed; }
Finally, we have our value - or what we're asking the property to do. In this case, we're changing the color, so the value is a hex color value. Color can also be denoted through rgb [written as rgb(0,0,0)]. Different properties will have different values. For example, text-align can have a value of left, right, or center (note the Americanized spelling again). If you click on the property in this list, it will tell you what values you can use!
You can have as many rules as you want in your selectors, as long as you end each of them with a semicolon. I cannot stress the semicolon enough. If your CSS isn't working - it's probably a missing semicolon. An example of multiple rules being used within one selector is in the pullquote styling:
#workskin .pullQuote { text-align: center; font-size: 0.75em; display: block; }
You can even write rules that override each other, though we try and avoid doing that. When this happens, your CSS will read from top-to-bottom, prioritizing the latest thing it has read (typically your bottom-most). There are exceptions to this, but that's not necessary for this guide.
So by this point you should have copied over the CSS I've written into your work skin, or perhaps tried your hand at making your own. This would be a good point to save.
3. With our Powers Combined
Right! So we have our work skin. We have our work formatted properly, resplendent with classes. Here's how we get these things talking to each other:
Once you've saved and closed your new work skin, open up or post the work you would like to apply the styling to. Down the bottom of the Associations section, there is an option to Select Work Skin. Ao3 already provides some work skins by default - Homestuck and Undertale - but you should be able to select your new work skin from this dropdown.
Tumblr media
Now here's the magic. Time to check if this worked. Go through and make sure you've applied your classes to each of the elements you want to change the look of. These can be <p> elements, <em> elements, <strong> elements, or you can even make new, unique sections using <span>. Save your work as a draft and preview it - if you've done everything right, you should see the sections of text you've added classes to have changed in appearance!
Tumblr media
A reminder that you can add multiple classes to one element: say for example you want to create section headings unique to each 'character', you can name both classes in the class field, separated by a space. See the example below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's about it! You can use the same work skin for multiple works - just remember that you should be using the same class names if that's the case. If you create a new class in your html, make sure to go back to your work skin and make some rules for that class!
I've created this codepen that you can play in that is using all the same classes - it also has the work skin in the CSS which you're also very welcome to mess around with.
Ao3 itself has a great guide to using work skins, explaining things just like I did here. The Modzilla Developer Network is a great resource for learning more in-depth about html and css if you want to do weirder and wonderful-er things!
I hope this has been informative and useful! Best of luck using skins in your own fics! 💛

part 2 of portal robot size post
(because i am still obsessing over this)
continuation of this post where i posted this image which is a screenshot from this video showcasing the size of portal 2 characters. and also i included my height of 5′3 for fun!
Tumblr media
the post got a comment basically saying “model sizes don’t always = canon sizes” and that is indeed true! especially given how the game seems to handle how things look when they’re picked up. personally i can find these sizes believable, especially comparing them to how big glados appears in robot repair vr.
anyways, i’ve been thinking about that comment a lot! like i said, i personally find all these sizes believable, but i wondered how much different they would be if i resized them based on certain robots with canon measurements: atlas and p-body!
Tumblr media
these blueprints are shown in portal 2 co-op loading screens! i specifically chose the blueprint of atlas facing the right because the front facing version’s head size seemed to include the frame that holds it, which added little over an inch.
ALSO, this was just something i did for fun! please don’t treat this post as the Definitive Portal Character Sizes Post. personally, as much as i love how huge the in-game model sizes are, i’m going by my resizes from now on because while they’re still decently big, they’re a lot more manageable to draw lol.
if you DO want to use this post as a reference to their sizes, by all means go for it! :D  credit isn’t necessary, but it would be nice just because of how much time i spent on this ;w;/
the rest of this post will be under a read more due to its length!! as a tl;dr, here’s a direct comparison image!
Tumblr media
feel free to share your own thoughts and whatnot if you would like!! ^v^ just a few more things before i continue...
THERE WILL BE A PRETTY BIG PORTAL 2 SPOILER GOING FORWARD!
i bolded character names + their heights because it was easier for me to read :o
i did all of this in.... gmod..... because i couldn’t find all of the models i needed, and i couldn’t be bothered to rip models from a freakin’ source game. SO i just, carefully lined everything up in gmod to the best of my ability and took screenshots, which i edited in my art program!! i’m a bit of a perfectionist, so hopefully things aren’t toooo far off... but yeah, just a heads up.
i’m, really bad at math, so not everything will be 100% accurate, especially the full glados size measurements. i used the website mrinitialman and a lot of measurement calculator websites to be sure things seemed alright. still, if there’s errors i apologize!
ANYWAYS let’s go!!
SO, here’s a new size comparison image i made. sorry if my writing isn’t readable! i’ll be restating the important things written on the images as this post goes on ;v;/
Tumblr media
p-body is around 6′7.5″ (201.9cm), atlas is around 6′1.3″ (186.2cm).
for chell i decided to go with her height from her heels rather than from her tiptoes. she’s still pretty tall at 5′11″ (180.3cm)!
wheatley’s model is around 2′7″ (78.7cm) in diameter, which is hilariously big and i love it BUT it’s probably not what his actual height is. same goes for the turret’s 4′10″ (147.3), and glados’ head being around 6′10″ (208.3cm) (i do wish these were the For Sure canon heights because glados' full model being ~50' (15.24m) long is so very funny to me. Giant.)
i’ve seen a few people say that atlas and p-body may be based on personality spheres and turrets respectively, and i like to think so too! so i resized wheatley and the turret based on those two. also, considering that wheatley’s model size stays the same size when he is on glados’ body, i resized them at the same time, as their sizes are relative to each other.
anyways with that, here’s my resize!!
Tumblr media
as i said: wheatley (and the other cores, of course) ends up being the same size as atlas’ head, so that makes him around 1′8.4″ (51.8cm) in diameter!
the turret ended up being around 3′10.5″ (118.1cm) tall.
glados’ head is around 4′6.4″ (138.2cm)! which makes glados head + body around 18′1.4″ (5.5m), and her entire model around 34′2.8″ (10.43m)! (btw for reference, movie theater screens are generally 30′ (9.14m) tall!!).
aand that’s it for my resizes, really! :O like i said earlier, this is what i'm personally gonna go with for my headcanons and whatnot.
that’s not the end, though. when i went back into gmod to get a screenshot of chassis wheatley, i somehow noticed for the first time that there’s just. straight up smaller models of a core and glados’ head, so i thought “eh! why not!” and measured those out to the best of my ability! here’s the results of that.
Tumblr media
the smaller gmod core model is around 1′3.8″ (40.1cm), and glados’ head is 3′3.6″ (100.6cm)! this would make her head + body be around 13′2.4″ (4.02m), and her entire model around 24′11.3″ (7.6m)! i imagine this is what the “actual sizes” of cores and glados would be? who knows though!
with all of this being done, here’s the quick direct comparison image again :D
oh and also for fun, here’s portal 1 glados’ head compared to the portal 2 glados head models and the resize i did! i always thought the portal 2 glados in portal 1 mod looked weird, turns out it’s because her main p2 model is much bigger than her p1 model!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and well! i don’t really have anything else to say, so that’s the end!
like i said, this is NOT the Definitive Portal Character Sizes Post ;o; i did this entirely for fun!! and even if this was the Definitive Portal Character Sizes Post, you can do whatever you want with these characters and their sizes! but again if you would like to use this post as a reference then by all means, go for it!! :D again, credit isn’t necessary, but it would be nice just because of how much time i spent on this...
ANYWAYS thanks for reading!!! :D

What makes you like Selina's purple costumes the best? And how would you rank her Catwoman costumes throughout the years from best to worst?
Hi Anony! 😊 So lovely of you to drop by!
I wrote a little piece on the Balent suit a while back, I'll quote myself here to explain why I like it the best:
I love purple. [...] The purple outfit is just the prettiest to me. The color, the gloves and boots, the cowl, it’s just gorgeous! And in a way an expression of what Selina is: very feminine, seductive, playful, and classy. Purple is the color of royalty, female cats are called “queens” - Selina’s the queen of the night, the world’s best thief. It just IS her color.
Also if you go up against the big bad Bat, what’s the best way to defeat (or in her case, escape from) him? Short-circuiting his brain! So all he sees is a curvy lady in skin-tight leather, wearing an inviting yet dangerous smile, throwing innuendo at him… Tell me that he can still concentrate on his mission, I dare ya!
[...] it’s also so much more… subtle. Yes, it’s skin-tight but it covers her up entirely and leaves something to the imagination. It might be just me but I prefer this over the cleavage that practically jumps at you. [...]
(I once tried to explain it like this: current Catwoman is a like stripper, raw and sexualised; 90s Catwoman is a Burlesque dancer, sexy and playful).
The suit’s even very funtional. Purple is harder to spot in the dark or when the light from bright neon signs on buildings reflects off of it. She’s wearing comfortable and light boots she can run and get a hold on edges with (yes, I’m talking about the version without high heels), not those heavy motherfuckers she could never be silent or soft-footed with! [...] And no goggles means no glass that can crack and get into your eyes. (or make you look like a bug)
Tl;dr: The Balent suit just expresses Selina's personality the best and, on a personal note, is the most aesthetically pleasing one.
Now over the past decades, we've had doooozens of Catwoman suits. I don't know if I can rank them all. 😅 I doubt anyone's ever done that.
But I can do a personal top 10 list if that's okay with you!
#1 - Jim Balent's 90's suit
Tumblr media
As I said, it's just perfection. I love it!
#2 - Batman: The Animated Series suit
Tumblr media
Something not purple is #2?! Yes! 🤣 I have a very soft spot for the BTAS design of Catwoman and not just because she was the first Catwoman I knew. She fits so well into the animated version of Gotham and her elegant outfit is a lovely parallel to Batman's suit, underlining how much of soulmates they are. If she had black hair, she would be perfect.
#3 - Golden / Bronze Age / Batman: The Brave and the Bold suit
Tumblr media
Back to purple: a dress and a cape. Not very practical but gorgeous. The changes between the outfits are very minimal so I combined them for my third place.
#4 - Silver Age suit
Tumblr media
Purple, cape - and pants! Doesn't look bad, right? They should have used this one more often.
#5 - Tim Sale's Long Halloween suit
Tumblr media
Sale's design is a bit lower on the list due to the useless tail, the big mouse ears, and the weird way the mask covers Selina's nose. A variation seen in When in Rome... even adds ridiculous whiskers to it. Why?! Also the jingling bracelets would constantly give away her position. BUT I was very happy when I saw the suit in Batman: Arkham City.
#6 - Injustice Regime suit
Tumblr media
This suit is lucky that it's purple and has tiny cute cat applications. Otherwise it wouldn't be here. 😜
#7 - The Long Halloween animated movie suit
Tumblr media
This one is basically a darker version of the BTAS suit minus the yellow belt (why are you afraid of colors, DC?). It's not bad at all but it bears the negative connotation that we got it instead of an animated version of the purple suit from the comics. A cheap substitute. We were robbed!
#8 - Batman: Arkham City suit
Tumblr media
While I'm no fan of the "zipper and goggles" suits, this one bothers me the least. Maybe because I loved the game, maybe because of the texture and gray color, I don't know. But this one, I like.
#9 - Batman Returns suit
Tumblr media
Another suit that fits well into the universe the character lives in. We saw how it came to be, manically stitched together by an unstable woman, and it symbolises how Selina's mental state falls apart over the course of the movie. I'm a sucker for symbolism.
#10 - Batman 1966 TV show suit
Tumblr media
This one works because of the wonderful woman in it. Julie Newmar's hourglass figure looks fantastic in this glistening number. I know Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt rocked it as well but man, you just can't top the original. Bonus points for the nostalgia.
---
Costumes that I think are among the worst (in no particular order) are:
The very first costume she wore with the creepy cat head, the green snake-looking suit, the blue costume with the red domino mask, and that ugly-ass thing her AME-Comi version wore. I would add more pictures but tumblr says "10 pics max per post" - fuck you. 😑
And if you're wondering "Where is whatever the fuck Halle Berry was wearing?" - I do not consider that movie a Catwoman movie. It has absolutely nothing to do with the DC character we all know. Change the movie's title and the only "connection" is gone. So I don't count that abomination they made her wear.
---
Thank you for the question, Anony! This was lots of fun putting together! 💜

Cayde... is an interesting character to me. A real mixed bag. What doesn't help is D1 and D2 painted wildly different pictures of him. In D1, he's stuffed in a tower and a job he hates, but he's helping you do yours, he's coordinating and corralling the Hunters, he's pretty good at what he does. Best exemplified in Taken King's opening cinematic where Ikora and Zavala are arguing, Cayde's looking at the Dreadnaught's schematics intently then leaves, ready to enact a bold plan of action. Oh, and the casual confession that he stole clocking tech from Rasputin for Bladedancers. Dude was cunning and wily as hell.
D2 turned what was a semi-playful semi-sarcastic sense of humour and frustration with being stuck in the tower into a on character onto itself.
He's far more serious in D1, and I honestly prefer THAT Cayde. A Cayde closer to Malcolm Reynolds, not Rick Castle. The one that did a lot of growing up in the Tower, just like Andal did a lot of growing up in that Tower.
That being said, I like to think the D2 depiction of Cayde was what he was like in Andal's pack. He's the joker, the wise cracker, the Charlie Chaplin etc etc.
I get that Cayde's getting out of the Tower more and he enjoyed the freedom to act a little more openly in the wilds but the different characterizations between 1 and 2 are just so jarring to try and reconcile - even with caveats.
What do you think?
Oh yeah, I totally get what you mean, anon! TTK's Cayde is peak of his character to me, surely the best and my favorite depiction of him on screen. He had just the right balance of jokery and seriousness there, knew when it's time to fool around and when it's time to get shit done - still in his own unique way.
I feel that the narration was a bit messed up in his case, it would make more sense if D1's and D2's Caydes just… switched places, you know? Personally, I didn't play D1, but was interested in the franchise right from its announcement and occasionally watched some videos, read news about it, etc. By the D2's release I knew some very basic info about its world and plot, but nothing in particular; so it's safe to say I got to know characters only in D2. And AFTER THAT got back to D1 and properly watched all available story campaigns from there. And it felt… Strangely normal? In Cayde's case, perfectly logical even - D1 felt like a cool development of his character, lol. I liked him in vanilla D2 too, he still was my fave there; and then I learned that actually he was even cooler than I thought, aren't that nice! And only after all that I finally took time to actually read the lore and got literally mind blown. That's also when Cayde jumped from the list of characters I like to my favorite ones.
I mean, I was learning (and still do tbh) about both games in an absolutely chaotic, unstructured and messed up way, but for getting to know Cayde it turned out to be the best, I think. I met him as a pretty generic funny robot guy, then I found out that he actually has a more serious and competent side, which made me like him even more and finally, after reading his diary and some other lore (especially about Exos in general), I got a clear picture of who he really was and what events shaped him to be like that. It was like unwrapping a delicious candy and it's one of things I personally always look for in all media.
But I can understand very well why people who played all games and DLCs in chronological order, think of D2's Cayde as a downgrade compared to D1. I personally think that this issue isn't only about Cayde, D2 as a whole had a... different mood on release. Felt like they were trying to do a "soft reboot" to make the plot and characters simplier and more appealing to the new audience, but had either too little time or too little budget to do it properly. So I'd say I don't think D2's Cayde is super different from D1's Cayde, it's just that… He was acting according to the events and in line with the story's mood, then got killed off in the beginning of the 1st ~serious~ expansion (which ironically got serious only thanks to his death) and that was it. In D2 we never saw him in a darker plot such as TTK; I think if we did, he would naturally act more similar to D1. And about this:
That being said, I like to think the D2 depiction of Cayde was what he was like in Andal's pack.
I don't know, I think back then he was 10 times worse 😂 D2's Cayde obviously had some idea of responsibility and tried to think through his actions, considered some risks at least - not that much about himself, but about people around him for sure. These being the qualities he clearly developed only after Andal's death. I think it was a huge turning point for his character, mercilessly chopping his whole life to "before" and "after". Andal becoming the Vanguard and then dying because of what Cayde thought to be entirely his fault was probably the first and biggest backslash of his own poorly thought out actions. Not first ever of course, but first that huge and painful. Because of his own idiocy and arrogance he lost his best, closest friend, that one man he admired to no end and who - miraculously - loved him back just as much (like, you can ship candal or not, it's perfectly okay obviously, but there's no way to not notice how special they were to each other). And then he couldn't do that anymore, due to the state of being undeniably, irreparably, absolutely dead. And why? Because of Cayde himself, of course. And it cost me my friend—I cost me my friend. GG.
Ah, I really got carried away, didn't I 😅
TL;DR: I 100% agree with you on TTK's Cayde being the best Cayde, but I don't think D2's Cayde is too bad either. And they both were absolutely more mature and responsible than the disaster named Cayde back from the old days with Andal & Co, lol.
So my chain of Cayde's evolution will be this: the Pack's Cayde ❯ D2's Cayde ❯ D1's Cayde.
Sorry for the wall of text and thanks for asking, it was interesting to try to collect my thoughts on this 💙

The Original Intent of Terra and how Deathstroke got the bad end of the stick for it
Okay, Deathstroke Children (Idk what to call you guys because fellow Deathstrokers would end this conversation immediately), I found the time to do this, so let's get to it!
(Note: My original laptop broke with my comics, so I have no images to spare, so it will be sourced. Another note: Many words will be in bold. Partly so that for those reading will not lose track.)
But if tl;dr:
Cold Hard Truth: Everyone from Terra fans to Deathstroke fans needs to stop seeing these characters as real people.
Original Terra wasn't human trafficked or whatever sob story people want to label her with. The CREATORS intended her to be written as Evil without the mental illness and to die for the shock value. They had Raven, The Literal Empath, spell this out in Judas Contract. As for Deathstroke's involvement, he was shoved into her creation story, and Marv Wolfman himself recognized his mistake in doing that.
And for those calling Deathstroke a nazi, Original Terra had nazi-like beliefs where common people should fear and serve them or be killed off just because they're 'special'. Again, BLUNTLY stated in the Judas Contract. So if you're going to call Deathstroke a Pedophile, we'll call OG Terra a Neo-Nazi. (But I highly advice for Deathstroke Fans to not start that kind of war, but I had to say what I had to say.)
Don't get me wrong. (Hopefully all) Deathstroke fans know that their relationship was wrong just like Marv Wolfman, and we do not support pedophiles! But Slade isn't a pedophile! He was never intended to be written as one! It was a mistake made on many levels and should be rewritten like OG Terra's Evil Neo-Nazi-like personality, instead of being thrown into cancel culture.
Also for Deathstroke fans, don't get upset over their content and begin any argument emotionally. Just enjoy whatever good content we can get and support it if you can. Hopefully we'll get our Deathstroke movies and so on!
So I've briefly chatted with one of you over the matter with Terra/Tara Markov and how upsetting it is about how people refer to Slade Wilson as a Pedophile. That is a serious accusation that would make it very uncomfortable to argue about since it can easily make it seem like we justify the actions of pedophiles, and that we are part of pedophile culture that does exist in social media space.
AND WE SHOULDN'T, AND FOR ANTIS READING THIS WE WON'T.
But there was a time when I used to have a blog called friendlyremindersofsladewilson, where I defended Slade and put the blame all on Terra. I was 14 at the time, and looking back at it, I am not proud of it because I realized now as an adult how I defended it for most of the wrong reasons, but still stand with the fact that SLADE IS NOT A PEDOPHILE.
And since this took place when I was so young, it compelled me to write this post because I fear some of you are really young, too, and may end up in this regretful position.
So to make it clear, what Slade had been written to do is a crime, and we should acknowledge it, but not in the way as if it was a crime acted out in real life.
What I mean by that is that there's a clear separation between fiction and reality where one isn't real (Duh!). In this case, it's about the mistakes made between fiction and reality. In reality, mistakes made by the person responsible is on the person. In fiction, mistakes made is dependent on the creator's intent, and sometimes the creators can make mistakes themselves.
Most notably Terra's:
Tara Markov/Terra was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.
In Marv Wolfman's literal website, he stated in his online "What the-?" column:
"Which leads to Terra. That was easy. George and I wanted a Titan who betrayed the others. we also wanted to play against every reader conception of who characters are. George and I knew her whole story before we began and we knew she would die. We set the story up with her trying to destroy the Statue of Liberty to show she was the bad girl, but we knew if George drew her as a cute kid everyone would simply assume she would be ‘turned’ from the dark side because that’s the way it was always done which is why that wouldn’t be the way we did it. Tara was insane an stayed that way right until the moment she died. By the way, she IS dead. I don’t know what other writers will do with her – if anything – but if they want to honor the original series they will leave her dead. The Terra from Team Titans was – as stated – some kid the villain kidnapped and physically and mentally altered her into looking and acting like the original. But she was NEVER the real Terra."
And it should also be noted that he stated before this statement that:
"...Only mistake I think I made with him is having him have a physical relationship with the 16 year old Tara Markov. That was wrong."
So Marv Wolfman himself recognizes that what he did was a mistake, but his intent on Terra was never to write a victim.
And quick note: Insanity isn't written as a mental illness here. It's written like how many villains are labeled as insane for having skewed beliefs that deviates from the common good.
Terra truly had some nazi-like beliefs where she BELIEVED that everyone who wasn't 'special' like her and the Teen Titans deserved to be treated like shit because they weren't 'special' like them. She bluntly said it herself in the Judas Contract.
As for George Perez's comment in an interview I found in this website:
"GEORGE: Tara was just a cute little girl, although I based a little bit of that on my wife Carol’s sister, Barbara. A little upturned nose… Barbara does not have the teeth that Tara had. I wanted Tara to be a girl who looked normal. Which also means her death caught everyone even more offguard.
Tara, she was made to be killed; she served her purpose. That was it.
ANDY: You didn ‘t get any attachment to Tara?
GEORGE: No, because I knew we were going to kill her. So I deliberately used all the things to make her as likeable and cute as possible, so people would never believe we were going to kill a sixteen-year-old. And she was a sixteen-year-old sociopath. She was one of our cleverest gimmicks; we deliberately created her in order to lead everyone astray. So we couldn’t build any fondness for her, ’cause we knew full well what her whole motive for existence was. Her existence was basically to keep the stories interesting; we were tossing a curve that no one would have expected.
ANDY: You didn ‘t even love to hate her, huh?
GEORGE: No. I loved handling her, because she was such a good idea. But she was an idea. Not as much a person. She was there to show exactly how much their humanity can be one thing they have to be careful about, the Teen Titans have to be careful about. . . they can be too trusting, or their own weaknesses can be used against them."
Terra was supposed to be a representation of An Evil Betrayal of Trust and That Not All Cute Girls Are Good.
But they took it too far by making her sleep with Deathstroke because they wanted to truly make her look evil by literally sleeping with the enemy. Y'know because this was the 80s, and women having sex was an evil act back then, and that point of view has somewhat or barely improved 40 years later.
Deathstroke was just shoved into this idea, and Marv tried and perhaps failed at trying to undo this mistake with his talk with Beastboy (Tales of the Teen Titans issue #55) and before his confrontation from Wintergreen (Deathstroke (1991); Chapter 35).
So just as I had stated at the top in the tl;dr, it was a mistake made on many levels and should have been rewritten out just as many had done with OG Terra's true personality, and be done with it.
Random person: "He still slept with a 16-year-old."
And it's not that hard to make other heroes and villains do this mistake. Because again, it's all fiction. Deathstroke's fictional. As in Not Real, so we could literally undo the damage by rewriting this mistake. Or make it worse by making Terra the rapist by her using her Earth powers to bind Slade down and force him, and you can't deny that it's plausible. Because she's fictional. Anything can happen. So why didn't Slade tell Beastboy whether he slept with her or not, maybe it was because he really didn't want to but he was forced into it. And that's just something you can't dump on a very emotional man who was trying to kill you a moment ago.
ALL THE POSSIBILITIES BECAUSE IT'S FICITIONAL!
But ANYWAY, I went way too dark there.
Ending on a brighter note: Personally to all Deathstroke fans, please value your mental health, please don't start any arguments that'll compromise it, and continue supporting Deathstroke in whatever way you can!

Ok so remember when I made this post about Ray well I’m going to make (a shorter one bc I’m actually quite tired) about Nora. And mostly I’m just here to say that while in theory I LOVE that Ray and Nora got married, I think it was a BAD idea to do that so soon. Also going to try @puppetavasharpe‘s bold thing because that is a V good idea.
It was established in S3 that Nora never really had a childhood because... you know... demon cult... and as an adult you mostly see her be bad UNTIL the fateful “torture isn’t the answer” scene in No Country For Old Dads. So then you know at the end of S3 Ray is like I believe in you bby here take this stone so you can break out lol. So anyway S4 is mostly about her redeeming herself and first of all I want to say that they did a GOOD job with this. Like wowie wow wow love it chef’s kiss etc... Now Nora (as a series regular at this point) is only in about half the episodes of S4, at the time this season aired, I actually didn’t mind it but then again I also thought that they would get more time in S5 (LOLOLOLOLOL) so it seemed fine to me. I also thought that since they did such a good job with Ray and Nora’s slowburn that that would... you know... continue? (again LOLOL)
The tl;dr of that last paragraph is: a lot of good things happened in S4. Nora got redeemed. She joined book club and made FRIENDS!! She became a time bureau agent. She kissed Ray.
But then she became a fairy godmother. And now I say again, at the time, it didn’t bother me because I thought it was just for the episode and I didn’t realize it would be a WHOLE THING. So then... season 5 happens.
Nora (still as a series regular at this point) is in 3.5 episodes of season 5. No I am not counting Marie Antoinette because she isn’t Nora in that episode. The .5 actually comes from that one scene where she is only on video and they say they love each other. Although she also was on video for the Marie Antoinette so we can round it up to 4 episodes I GUESS.
After her getting all of that development, making friends!! Book club!! They just sort of erase all that. And I actually do like that she gets to help kids but having her be a fairy godmother isolated her from everything she had just gone through. And then she just like... gets married. We never even got to see Ray and Nora like go on a date?? What is this the NANNY? (Sorry I just binged the Nanny and also have strong feelings about that development)
We never actually really get to see Ray and Nora have a relationship except for like in Slay Anything but to have that one episode and then they are just like ok marriage time bby!! I feel like it is a disservice to her character because I think she still needed time to find herself. Again, SHE NEVER GOT A CHILDHOOD. Let her just like live her life for a bit. Let her have her friends. Let her have cute boyfriend/girlfriend moments!!!
Ok so the tl;dr of THIS is: The whole post got away from me so basically it was too soon for them to get married and I wanted Nora to have more time for herself and also to ACTUALLY.DATE.RAY. Thank you.

I've seen a lot of people saying that rot was BAD, what is your opinion?
OH IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED
like most people (im sure) after finishing rise of the titans, after wiping up my tears i went to the rot tag to see maybe some gifs or something. you know, make myself cry a little more. instead, i found a bunch of people saying how much they hated the ending, how it was as terrible as some of the worst big finale bombs (endgame, game of thrones, etc) and uh. im not saying the ending is perfect, but it is DEFINITELY not as disastrous as what people are making it out to be, in my opinion. i thoroughly enjoyed the movie, actually, and i thought it was an effective way to end the tales of arcadia.
warning: rise of the titans spoilers, as well as general tales of arcadia spoilers
were there some things i didn't like? yeah!
the major things i didn't like align with a lot of what i see other people saying:
the weird mpreg plotline with steve. it just felt so strange and out of place, and it was used as a tactic to remove eli and steve from the major action, which i don't like.
and the 'ninth configuration' thing that, once again, excluded eli and steve. i didn't see a reason why they shouldn't have been there, seeing as they have contributed to trollhunting since nearly the start of all of the tales of arcadia. multiples of three are clean and smooth, i get it, but at the expense of two characters that were so lovingly developed in trollhunters and 3below?? yikes
with that being said, though, i don't agree with what a lot of people are saying about the time travel at the end. obviously, they bring up some good points - by changing the timeline so drastically, there's no way for jim to ensure that they'll be able to succeed or if the arcane order will even act in the same way. it's a big 'if' and it is worth thinking about
but people have been saying that the ending is out of jim's character and negates his arc, and i have to say. that's not true.
if you've been following my blog since july 1st, you'll know that ive spent the past twenty one days rewatching the entire tales of arcadia series at a steady pace, and within that time, i've paid a whole lot of attention to jim's arc as a character and how the finale of trollhunters left me feeling as if something just wasn't clicking right. his arc wasn't finished.
because all throughout trollhunters, jim is constantly having to prove his worth - and most of the time, the way he's proving his worth is by sacrificing himself. he takes all the blame when anything goes wrong, and on some level, jim never truly learns the lesson from season one of trollhunters that he's enough as a hero because he has his friends to back him up. like, yeah, he relies on them a bit more after that, but in the end, he still stands in the bathroom alone, separated from all his allies, and shoulders the burden of turning into a troll alone. and he leaves arcadia, the city he was fighting so hard to protect, and he leaves his best friend, the one that has been with him since the beginning.
then we get wizards, where jim lets himself be corrupted to save his friends. and then, because of that sacrifice, he ends up hurting all of them. i believe this fact - that he willingly corrupted himself, separated himself from his allies, and ended up hurting the people he loved - shook jim's foundation as a hero, which is why he can't believe he's the trollhunter without the amulet. the amulet was the physical manifestation of what it meant to be a hero to him, but it was destroyed when he was corrupted - it was destroyed when he hurt his friends.
that's how we see him in rise of the titans; he's still struggling with his identity as a hero because he doesn't have the amulet or the unshakable foundation he previously had of his heroism. literally everyone is looking for him to be the leader and make the huge, world-saving-or-destroying decisions, but he can't shoulder that huge burden knowing he could hurt everyone. and then, just to add fuel to the fire, it's his plan that causes people to die or be permanently separated from the group. and he can't even get the sword out of the stone! why? because he himself doesn't see himself as worthy - how can you think of yourself as worthy when you just got two of your allies killed and two more gone, presumably for forever?
but this is the moment it finally clicks for jim. he looks around at his allies, and he sees them reflected in the amulet. he's not alone, he doesn't have to be worthy just by himself, he has an entire group of people who have fought by his side time and time again that, even despite all the mistakes and missteps he's made, are still by his side.
and what makes the amulet work, in the final fight, is his firm determination to see this fight through, no matter if he has the armor or not. he's terrified, he's probably going to die - but it's that bravery despite the fear that makes him a hero, a trollhunter, amulet or not. and he knows that now - he's had to face it before, in the unbecoming episode, but it's different now. in the unbecoming episode, he was truly alone when he decided to face the fight. and he's alone here in rise of the titans - but not for long! because almost immediately after jim comes to terms with his place as a hero again, toby comes along, and he doesn't finish this fight alone!! he finishes this fight with another trollhunter, who doesn't have an amulet!!
jim deciding to rewind time to back before the events of trollhunters is a bold choice, but it tracks with a theme in wizards - merlin told douxie that what set him apart as a master wizard was his belief that every life was valuable and worthy of being saved. this theme is repeated in the new amulet in rise of the guardians; it's for the glory of all, not just for one person.
and jim deciding to have toby become the trollhunter finally marks the completion of jim's arc. instead of shouldering the burden alone, which is inevitably what would've happened if jim had rewound time, kept all of his memories, and accepted the amulet again, jim is choosing to accept allies into his life sooner. instead of being the trollhunter, jim is letting himself be a trollhunter, alongside all the other trollhunters.
of course, there's some things in this alternate timeline i don't like; mainly that no one stepped in to stop steve from bullying eli. that, to me, was the most out of character, and i can only assume jim didn't step in because he's leaving room for that fight to be toby's; competing against steve was a large jumpstart to jim feeling like he could be strong enough to bear the mantle, and maybe jim was just trying leave it up to toby to establish that on his own. still, i didn't like it.
and, of course, there are people lamenting the fact that none of the heroes of arcadia know each other or that they might not have the same relationships, but i immediately thought of the time loop episode in 3below. in that episode, the trollhunters team and the gang from 3below meet and become friends and ultimately lose the memory of that friendship from that day. however, in that episode, blinky says that true friendship would last against the test of time; if they were meant to be together, then they would be. and guess what? even though none of them remember that happening, they all still became friends. it was meant to be.
i think a lot of anxieties about the changed timeline are because people loved the events of trollhunters so much that they a) don't want to see anything changed and/or b) are trying to project the events of trollhunters onto the new timeline and are upset when they don't fit. toby won't be the same kind of hero that jim is, though - he never has been. inevitably, the story will be different, and that's scary. that was the risk jim took, though, and jim has always trusted in toby, so why shouldn't we?
to me, tales of arcadia has never been about clean endings that make you feel entirely good. they've always left me with a tang of bitter along with the sweet, and i think that's the point. tales of arcadia has always battled with hard questions and difficult endings, and i don't see rise of the titans being any different from that.
like i said before, i don't think rise of the titans is perfect. but you can hate it as much as you want; i still really think it did a good job with the story it was trying to tell. i mean, ending with the idea that all lives are important and worth saving, no matter the risk? that heroism inherently means being part of a collective that you trust and believe in? that through time and space, you will always be able to find and connect with the people you love? that's powerful.
im climbing off my soapbox now, but basically tl;dr: rise of the titans was a good finale, despite it's imperfections, and i think that's all i can ask for.
also if you don't like toby as the trollhunter just because you don't like him breaking out of the 'funny sidekick' archetype you can die by my blade

not to be very annoying, but do you happen to know any good books/resources about lgbt slang/identities in victorian/edwardian/etc england? (i mean, things such as lesbians calling each other "toms" and the like). don't worry if you don't know any, but i just figured i'd ask since this was kinda in your Area Of Interest so you might know some off the top of your head.
the not annoying at all but this is a more complex question than at first glance hahaha
TL;DR: there are many types of queer language / we have way more info about men, who have their own lexicon / this era is widely seen as the era in which the concept of identity is actually coming into play / books list at the end, scroll down til you reach bolded text if you don’t want my commentary.
so when you’re looking at mid 19th - interwar lgbt communities, whether in europe or the uk or the usa it doesn’t really matter bc this is quite universal, you’ve got at least three registers, for lack of an easier word:
how self-identified homosexual, inverted, queer, abnormal etc men (henceforth gay men) speak with each other
how self-identified “” women (henceforth lesbian women) speak with each other
interactions between these groups
these naturally intersect with other socioeconomic class factors.
back to england specifically:
despite legal considerations gay men have the most agency and ability to move around and therefore are more likely to interact with each other and form communities. so now you have additional registers:
upper middle / upper class
middle / lower middle / working class (more registers here but nobody asked me and i promise i will give you recs soon)
again, interactions between them
the latter category has limited applications; most of them have to do with prostitution or casual sex and tend to be about categorizing people in terms of what sex acts they participate in. (this is universally true of most forms of gay slang and/or their origins for obvious reasons) think locker room talk. OR, we’re looking at cross class relationships and how other people view members of cross class relationships. not to generalize bc there are other things than this but what is best documented here is the upper class pov of these interactions
for the first category there is much less slang & unique community language, when you look at letters and works of literature etc etc people are picking and choosing from both medical/psychiatric terminology, which is developing rapidly from the 1860s on, and like, classical works; you get a lot of alluding to things. artistic communities (bloomsbury group, natalie clifford barney’s harem in paris and what have you) meanwhile are sort of all over the map. but bc this isn’t Polite Society talk, most of the sources for this kind of language tend to be limited in scope. which is true for all subculture language really but like in this case, authors of the day who are writing what they know are we think giving a pretty accurate picture of what their actual communities were like... but it’s put through a filter for publication.
by the 20th century urban working class gay men in certain circles are using polari, a subcultural lexicon which came from mid/late 19th century theatre and music hall slang, which came from fairground cant, seafaring , labor slang, Yiddish, cockney, theatre slang, fishmarkets, French, Italian, underground crime rings literally i could go on and there’s lots of debate about this. it’s turn of the century when it comes to be used very widely within the gay community, and while its origins are in london it made it to other uk urban centres fairly quickly. this lasted well into the latter half of the 20th century and is the base for a lot of community slang today, which leads me to
lesbian women, who also used polari, albeit to a lesser extent. these were primarily lesbians who were also in the 3rd camp above - ones who are involved in the community and interacting w/ gay men regularly. (”straight women who work in theatre” is another category of woman polari speakers haha but performance slang went thru many changes and eventually things got p separate so you had fairground & theatre cant and gay subculture slang having similar roots but very distinct in usage)
for lesbian communities the same thing as w gay men applies for the upper classes just to a lesser degree due to the relative lack of a community experienced by women
but a very important point here is that, ESPECIALLY during the victorian period, less so moving into the 20th century, intimate relationships between women are viewed very, very differently than those between men - male relationships have hard and fast boundaries of what is and isnt acceptable, those of women do not.
the development of identity w/ sexuality for women i think in many ways had a lot more to do with women who expressed their gender differently than women who had intimate exclusive relationships w/ other women
anyway the point is there unfortunately is no like comprehensive text for All Queer Language at this point in time, nor for the development of sexual identity, and the nature of this field (linguistics + history + sociology about queer stuff) means that a lot of the good work is in academic articles which i do NOT know off the top of my head. :-( but here’s some stuff !!
LIST OF THE ACTUAL BOOKS SORRY ABOUT ALL THAT
ok so these are all nonfiction, mostly academic nonfiction, but i want to stress that contemporary literature is a REALLY good way to get a (often rose tinted but not always) look into subculture and there are many novels that play with and/or poke at the ongoing development of sexual identity, especially in edwardia, especially especially in the 1920s, so if youve got endless time to read on your hands it is absolutely worth poking around there.
i have a list in the works of 1920s literature that has lgbt stuff in it and i realise thats a bit late for you but even so!!
also: compilations of letters, memoirs, etc are like super super invaluable
anyway ive bolded the most important ones:
Kosofsky Sedgwick, Eve. Epistemology of the Closet. 1990. University of California Press. [required lgbt theory reading, literally the foundation for soooo much]
Marcus, Sharon. Between Women: Friendship, Desire, and Marriage in Victorian England. 2007. Princeton University Press.
Robb, Graham. Strangers: Homosexual Love in the Nineteenth Century. 2003. [this is like, functionally prerequisite reading for any gay male stuff for the 19th century & robb is an excellent popular historian who also has an actual academic background]
Rupp, Leila J. Sapphistries: A Global History of Love between Women. 2008. NYU Press.
Russett, Cynthia. Sexual Science: The Victorian Construction of Womanhood. 1989. Harvard University Press. [touches on things but is not About sexuality/identity]
these are both already on my downton abbey research list but they both discuss language thruout and identity very thoroughly:
Brady, Sean. Masculinity and Male Homosexuality in Britain, 1861-1913. 2005. Palgrave Macmillan.
David, Hugh. On Queer Street: A Social History of British Homosexuality 1895-1995. 1997. HarperCollins.
for polari, see basically everything paul baker’s done. the 2019 might be the most accessible but i havent read it yet:
Baker, Paul. Fantabulosa: A dictionary of Polari & gay slang. 2002. London: Continuum.
Baker, Paul. Polari: The Lost Language of Gay Men (Routledge Studies in Linguistics). 2002. London: Routledge.
Baker, Paul. Fantabulosa! The Story of Polari, Britain’s Secret Gay Language. 2019. London: Reaktion.
while it predates the era youre asking about, this book is good reading that leads up to the changes of the victorian era in sexual morality & how that affects identity and language:
Donoghue, Emma. Passions Between Women: British Lesbian Culture 1668–1801. 1995. HarperCollins.
also i hate to do this but like. foucault lol. obviously not focused on britain but very much focused on the development of identity and sexuality.
ive been working on this for like three straight hours im gonna go eat lunch now
