Hiii Shan,

I cannot remember for the life of me if I asked you about it or not and tumblr search does not help. I've been listening to the @the-conversation-pod round-up ep and apart from making me burst out laughing in public transport, it got me thinking about 'I Cannot Reach You' and the friends-to-lovers trope. Have you ever listed your fav dramas that use it? If not, can I ask for one pretty pretty please?

Thank you for listening to the @the-conversation-pod! And this is such a good question, because friends to lovers is actually a hard trope to get right and often isn't executed that well. It's also a term that is often misapplied to mean something more like friendly to lovers, aka a romance that starts out with the main pair meeting and keeping things platonic for awhile before they escalate to romance.

A true execution of the friends to lovers trope in its purest form is a relationship change narrative, and that requires an established and important friendship, a major transition in the way both members of the pair view each other, and most importantly, lots of angst. If there's no serious anxiety and fear about the changing feelings and losing the friendship present in the narrative, it's not actually friends to lovers, it's just a natural romantic relationship progression. So something like Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, while a great story about a pair of college students who establish a friendship before eventually realizing they like each other, is not really a FTL as defined here. And my beloved Sing My Crush doesn't qualify either, because romantic feelings were present the entire time, just suppressed.

So with those parameters set, there are only a handful of dramas I think have done this really well. Onto the list:

I Cannot Reach You

You already mentioned this one, so let me just reiterate what I said on the podcast: it's the best friends to lovers bl ever made. This story absolutely nails the relationship change arc and puts us in Kakeru's shoes as he realizes his best friend since childhood 1) is gay and 2) has developed feelings for him, and takes us along for the ride as he decides what he wants to do with that. Yamato is the absolute picture of tortured angst and the whole thing is excruciating in the best way, because it makes the payoff so very sweet.

Fight For My Way

I am pretty sure I have recommended this show to you before, and I will keep right on doing it because it's a fantastic romcom and my favorite friends to lovers drama of all time. This one is heavier on the comedy beats, but still gets to the heart of the fear and anxiety, and also goes deep on how hard it is when one of the friends clues into their feelings much sooner than the other and hangs in as a loyal friend while nursing their wounded heart in private. Watching Dong Man finally figure out what the hell is going on and catch up to Ae Ra was one of the greatest pleasures of my years of drama watching.

Theory of Love

I said what I said and I meant it! This drama is controversial because it hits the angst really hard and pushes the characters to some ugly places and some people just can't deal, but it's such an authentic portrayal of how much it hurts to be in love with your oblivious friend, and how much we hurt ourselves by not being honest about our feelings in a misguided attempt to protect the relationship we already have. I love it dearly and will defend it to anyone.

Romance Is A Bonus Book

A bit on the lighter side, watching this drama is like curling up on the couch in a cozy sweater with your favorite book and a cup of tea. It manages to both take the relationship arc seriously while never once making you doubt that these friends will be okay, because they are truly ride or die. There is also an age gap at play here, so we have the added bonus of watching Dan Yi wrestle with her changing feelings for her best friend that she has always thought of as a little brother. I will never forget her staring into the mirror to practice telling Eun Ho "I don't see you as a man" and getting increasingly desperate as she realizes that is no longer true. *chef's kiss*

My Only 12%

See-iw and Cake, my beloveds! I love this pair a lot, and think this drama is a fantastic example of how powerful the friends to lovers trope can be when combined with a queer awakening and the added layer of fear that brings to the story in a non-bubble show. The arc of their close childhood friendship morphing through time, separation, and changing identities is so so good. This one comes with a caveat because the last two episodes of the show are abruptly bad and weird (New Siwaj *shakes fist*) but happily, the FTL arc is already complete by then and none of the nonsense messes with the couple.

Hospital Playlist

I know you know this one, but I cannot possibly finish this list without talking about Ik Jun and Song Hwa. This is such a slooooooooooow burn that plays out over 24 episodes, and it's brilliantly done. What I like most about this take on the trope is how mature and adult it is; these two are 40 year old booked and busy professionals, and they also value their friendship more than anything. I love that you get the whole arc of their relationship over 20 years as they meet, have initial sparks, don't get together for reasons, genuinely settle into a platonic friendship and date and even marry other people, and then realize their feelings are changing again later in life. The payoff after all this time and patience and quiet yearning is so beautifully earned.

I actually read a few of their fics last night! I love the portrayal of kataang that they have, and I especially love any kataang being parents content. I also thought it was funny that they took the whole zvtara trope of Katara having to escape Aang (🤢) and then flipped it on its head bc yknow what? We as a ship fandom deserve it after all we deal with lmao.

I have yet to read the Teenage!Aang fic that’s multi chapter and I haven’t read their one shot titled I’m No Longer A Kid, but I will when I get the time! Maybe tonight 💛

There’s truly so many amazing kataang fics to be found on ao3 and fanfiction.net (that’s the site I wrote my first ever fanfics on and yes they WERE kataang fics). We have some truly amazing artists and writers for this pairing <3

If you’d like recs of my own for kataang, I read a couple last night in addition to the author’s you mentioned. Exchange of Wrath by ArmageddonGeneration was incredible (3 chapters) and a one shot From the Moon to the Ocean by the same author. I also recommend literally any kataang content from chocomd on ao3 and they have some zukaang fics too if you ship that. Highly rec Without Water, Midnight Meditations, and Drag You Down, all are kataang fics!

Hopefully I’ll have the time eventually to write a kataang fic myself! I haven’t gotten around to writing anything for them on my ao3 account, but one day I will 🫶🏻 only gotten to post my twilight fics on there and have tons of WIPs and working on original novel too so just gotta find the time to devote to kataang

Fav 2022 K-Dramas/Movies

1. My Liberation Notes

About: Three siblings, exhausted by the monotony of day to day adulthood, seek to find fulfillment and freedom from their unremarkable lives

Honestly, no one did it like My Liberation Notes. The way they captured the mundane lives of adults, the longing for happiness, freedom, and the loneliness of it all. The way they depicted all that through raw lines, monologues, and even silence that gave even deeper meanings. To say I love this show is an understatement 🥺

2. Extraordinary Attorney Woo

About: Woo Young Woo, a woman on the spectrum that tackles challenges as a newbie at a top law firm

This show is popular for a reason. It has everything you could ask for in a kdrama: feel good vibes, heartwarming stories, heart-fluttering love, found family, and interesting characters (with brilliant acting). Although we couldn't expect Woo Young Woo to be representative for all people with autism (since autism is considered as a spectrum), but I love the way her portrayal in this show was educative while also really fun to watch 🤍

3. Twenty Five Twenty One

About: In a time where dreams seem out of reach, a teen fencer pursues her ambitions and meets a hardworking young man who seeks to rebuilds his life.

Couldn't express how much it's comforting to watch the two main characters build connection in the pursuit of happiness. The fact that these two people share different perspectives in life (one was hopeful & optimistic, while the other one was realistic) was its charm. Not to mention the growing bond of the friendship between them and their friends. Together, they make every scene seemed refreshing and entertaining to watch. It was truly an uplifting youth show that brightened last year's atmosphere ✨

4. Alchemy of Souls

About: A powerful sorceress in a blind woman's body encounters a man from a prestigious family, who wants her help to change his destiny.

Love, love the world building of this one! Also, the gripping love stories that took "I'll love every version of you" seriously 🥺. It was captivating how observant every characters in this show were & the way they unfold the stories. Even the action scenes portrayed like an art. Therefore, even though it has many episodes with long duration, I wasn't bored at all.

5. Little Women

About: Three sisters become embroiled in a major incident and face off against the wealthiest family in the nation

The fact that two of my fave actresses (Nam jihyun & Kim goeun) casted in one kdrama was such a dream!! It's a women centric kdrama i could say, from the way the main characters, writer, & director are all women <3. I love that it has such morally grey characters and a story that's full of intriguing misteries. It kept me on the edge of my seat.

6. 20th Century Girl

About: A teen girl has her eyes set on a boy for her lovesick best friend. However, things become complicated when she falls in love and is forced to choose between love and friendship

A heartening youth stories that every fan of 2521 should watch! Again, the plot seemed cliche but it still managed to enthralled you with sweet & fun interactions between the main characters, their growing romance, and what comes for them in the future. It was a rollercoaster of emotion but I really enjoyed it to end <3

7. Business Proposal

About: Hari, a regular employee, shows up to a blind date in disguise of her rich friend to scare him away. Things go awry when he turns out to be her CEO and makes a proposal.

Normally, a kdrama with a cliche plot and some cringe lines wasn't my piece of cake. But Business Proposal is something else I guess. It managed to make even the cliche plot entertaining to watch, still. I didn't expect that I'd laugh this much while watching this show, but I did. Their actings were so fun to watch and it's such a light kdrama that i enjoyed to watch.

Addition: Fav K-Drama (Not Released in 2022) that I've Watched Last Year

Prison Playbook

About: a legendary Korean baseball player whose life change after he chases a man who harasses his sister and finds himself spending a year in prison.

This is such a gem for a slice of life genre! From the director of Hospital Playlist & Reply series, you could expect some heartwarming feels coming from every characters' background stories. Despite the serious & harsh life we could thought of from prison life, this kdrama have many comical scenes, a series of roommates bickering, & such a moving found family. I wish the director would make more of these 🥺🤍

Thoughts on So Weird's 25th Anniversary

It's hard to believe So Weird premiered 25 years ago. It feels like we JUST celebrated the 20th anniversary, but then again the pandemic has completely distorted my sense of time.

Maybe it's because I'm in my 30s now or maybe it's because I was fortunate enough to meet the wonderful actress who brought her to life, but I have discovered that I am in my Molly Phillips era and Molly has overthrown Jack as my fav.

I truly have had a different favorite character for different stages of my life and I love how as I grow older, I continue to love this show for different reasons.

Now as the show is 25, I've been doing a lot of thinking about the lost episode Chrysalis and the character Molly Phillips and the content that is on Disney Plus now and the content we were denied. It was such a missed opportunity.

At the time that So Weird was airing, I was 6-8 years old and my dad was struggling with a disease. I remember asking my mom what it was that my dad had that made him have to sleep on the couch or stay in the hospital and her just repeating "He has a disease!" until I stopped. It wasn't until I was adult that I learned he struggled with alcoholism.

At 6-8 years old, all I knew about diseases were that they could be caused by smoking and that they can kill you so I assumed it was related to his cigarette smoking and feared he was going to die. I also knew that he had stopped smoking for 4 years, around the time he and my mom got married. My sister and I are exactly 4 years and 6 days apart. At 6-8 years old I knew basic math and the conclusion that I came to was that having a second kid (me) must have bad so stressful it led him to smoking. I fully believed for my whole childhood that my mere existence was killing my dad by driving him to smoke.

That is some heavy shit to carry as a 7 year old and a whole lotta shit to unpack in therapy as an adult.

And it was all because everyone thought it was in my best interest not to explain things like alcoholism in a way that I could understand because they thought children shouldn't know about such things.

As a latchkey kid, I was raised by television as much as I was raised by my parents and if the execs at Disney would have allowed So Weird to do that issues show they were so afraid of, it could have been lifechanging. Being able to see my favorite characters discuss alcoholism and provide some context that shows and explains what it is in a way a kid could understand would have been so valuable.

But Disney was too afraid to do an issues show.

Earlier this year, I watched the new Goosebumps series on Disney+ and was surprised to see kids openly making fun of one of the moms for being a wino. I'm glad that Disney is no longer afraid to show real life situations in that alcohol is a thing that exists and kids (well, the ones who aren't extremely sheltered like I was) are aware of it. But as happy as I am to see Disney is evolving to include these elements and showing more kid-friendly horror, all I could think of was the missed opportunity they had with So Weird. They could have done so much good with Chrysalis.

One of my favorite things about So Weird as a kid was that I never felt like I was being talked down to.

As an adult, I absolutely love the depth to Molly that a past struggle with alcoholism brings. It indicates just how visceral losing Rick was, how much pain Molly was in that she needed to self-medicate it away and stop feeling feelings because they were too hard. It shows how strong she is as a person for getting her life together since then, being able to do a comeback tour and be the amazing mom we see her as. It humanizes her on such a real level. She's the best portrayal of a tv mom because she very much is a MOM-- she doesn't try to be best friends with her kids, but she makes sure they know they can talk to her and go to her for help.

Dealing with my dad's unexpected death in my early 20s (which was surprisingly not due to smoking, or at least not primarily) showed me that my parents are above all else PEOPLE-- with flaws, with struggles, who just did the very best they could with the hand life dealt them. Molly represents that so well and I think it's why I've been drawn to her lately.

25 years of So Weird and I am still finding so much to relate to and gush about with this show.

Forever keeping the faith that one day So Weird's full story will be told, either by graphic novel or reboot.

It is still absolutely timeless.

Day 11: Fav Duet (Dance/Plot) After seeing all the other posts for Day 11, I'm starting to think this day should be "Fav Duet, and tell us why it's Apollo/Cassandra in Klub."

But still...

This is where I start to cry as I try to choose only one.

This show is chocked full of incredible duets. In fact, I would say that duets create the majority of the dances.

I'm trying to list them all in my head. It's not going well. Or it's going too well, depending on how you look at it.

There are duets I loved because of their beauty. Duets that affected me emotionally. There are duets that brought me such joy and laughter. There are also duets that told such intricate stories that it is almost impossible to consider them in the same realm of the question.

But, like the majority I've seen so far: the duet I'm choosing is Apollo and Cassandra in Klub. Out of the tryptic of dances at the beginning of Apollo and Cassandra's loop, this is the one I feel we saw the most of the personality of the two characters, and the differences in their performers and how they were interpreting this incredible emotional journey.

This is the one and only time (in my opinion) that we see Cassandra's truly playful side. She is reverent before, scared and angry afterwards. She is determined later in the loop. Vengeful even. But never playful except in this one short scene.

As well as being a beautiful and emotional duet, this scene also contains some of my favourite dance phrases.

Ingrid Kapteyn's Cassandra experiencing such glee and excitement as she tests her new gifts, hips swaying and hair flowing.

Georges Hann's Apollo firing an arrow at Cassandra as she uses her newfound gift of prophecy to escape his every move.

Seirian Griffiths' Apollo's whirling, chaotic, screaming smackdown of Cassandra, sending her to the floor. The timing and power of it is gasp-inducing.

Seirian Apollo standing on the U shaped bench, and Pin Chieh Cassandra in the space between the seats, as Apollo moves on top of the seats, directing Cassandra to dance the way he chooses. Or perhaps he's dancing to her tune... Depends on how you look at it.

Where my choice of a favourite solo was so performer dependent, this dance gets top spot because I have loved it so completely no matter the pairing of performers. Each pairing brings something new, exciting, and stunning to the portrayal.

When I first heard that Tim Bartlett (one of my early favourite performers) would finally be playing Apollo (something I had wanted to see for the entire run of the show to that point,) this was the dance I was most excited for. And he twisted his half of this duet into something so dark and furious. The commanding and belittling tone he put into some of his moves was an entirely different experience. Reaching for Cassandra's hand at the end, there was nothing apologetic about it, unlike with the other Apollos I saw and loved. Apollo had already made his decision, and it was Cassandra's refusal that cemented it.

This twist of the performance, even with the same choreography and timings, really solidified what I already knew: that these performers are all impossibly talented. That as little as a facial expression, or the motion of a single gesture, could switch out an entire character for me.

Which, leads me back to why this is my favourite duet. Because it is this dance that says the most about Apollo and Cassandra's tragic relationship, which is, for me, one of the most emotional stories in the show.

CONFESSION:

Sera is a fascinating character, and a wonderful example of a companion you have to carefully listen to in order to understand. She's a brilliant and relatable example of a genuine victim of abuse rather than a caricature of one. My canon and fav romance in the series, is a Dalish Elf with Sera, precisely because it links to her personal troubles and all she's been through in the past. The writing experiment in having an abused character, that you truly have to listen to and try to fully understand, otherwise you'll dismiss her, is one I really respect, and it makes me sad that so many people immediately dismiss her as 'just a bitch' because she's so much more than that, and such a mass dismissal of an abuse victim who struggles with acceptance and doesn't know how to easily voice the ways she hurts so instead panics and lashes out, is…well, what happens to a lot of genuine abuse victims IRL. She's a very real, but very sad, portrayal of that.

Now that you’re done, what are your thoughts on our fav failking Maruki?

So I’ve been sitting on this question a while. I didn’t know how to really express my opinions properly that weren’t in the usual comedic tone I pick up when I talk about the things I love, but I really wanted to answer this question wholeheartedly, so here we are!

Firstly, I need to get my actual thoughts about Persona 5 Royal out of the way, because I love this game. I truly and completely love this game, and it’s knocked BOTW out of the number one placement spot for my favourite game of all time. Everything from the characters, story, music, even the UI design have me absolutely floored, and I genuinely cannot think of a game I could say tops it for me. I listen to the soundtrack daily, and constantly think about the game when I can. I have so many complex thoughts about the game I could talk about here, but since this is just about my opinions on Maruki, I’ll keep those to myself.

Moving on, Maruki is, I feel, one of my favourite characters of all time. He’s so interesting and well-written, his motives make sense, and for the audience it’s sympathetic. We understand why he’s doing what he does, even if it’s wrong. He cares a lot about people, but he cares too much, and it’s his downfall. He wants to make everyone happy, and it’s just impossible. He can’t live knowing someone would be slightly upset. He worked for multiple years to create his perfect reality, presumably trying to figure out a way to help everyone he could, when the opportunity to help everyone landed right in his lap. This was the most important thing to him, and it’s admirable as it is stupid. The loss of that desire, the loss of that ability to help everyone he could, his failed reality and the fact that no matter how hard he tried, he still couldn’t succeed did a massive number on his mental state. Though, I feel as though he mostly survived on his need to help people rather than any positive mental state for a while. I mean, the second he loses that desire, loses years of work and watches as it crumbles and shatters around him, he fully gives up and tries to kill himself (something which Ren was in no way shape or form going to allow). His love for people is what drove him, and his love for people almost drove him to his death.

I feel like a lot of people misunderstand Maruki and what he was meant to represent, He's not one of those “rotten adults.'' He's a broken and hurt man who hadn’t been allowed to express his emotions, and suffered hit after hit (his studies being cut short, his lab being turned into a stadium, his fiancé having a mental breakdown and going catatonic) and tried to fight his emotions by helping other people instead of focusing oh himself. Hence him becoming a therapist and trying to help other people out with their problems as opposed to focusing on his own.

I’ve realised people tend to get angry at Maruki because he was a twist villain. They trusted him and he turned out to be the last boss of the game, and whilst this is understandable, it’s also fucking stupid to stay mad. Characters like this tend to get a lot of shit treatment and I’ve seen people complain multiple times about games having obvious villains, only to complain and get genuinely angry when a twist villain is revealed to be a character they got attached to or trusted. (An example of this is Volo from Legends: Arceus.) Maruki is very much one of these. People are allowed to feel how they want, however these communities of people are so loud, and it makes it hard to find accurate and earnest portrayals of the characters. Instead, what's more prevalent is an insane twisting of the truth people do to justify their anger, or portrayals present in order to have a “villain” for fan content. They do this without realising that the point is that anyone can mess up, and Maruki isn’t a villain for what he did.

To me, Maruki represents guilt and trying to catch an elusive “happy ending." The story of the game is riddled with tragedy and it mostly sticks to its guns about keeping these tragedies permanent. The characters wouldn’t be who they were without the sadness that’s befallen them. The reality Maruki tried to make (and what a lot of people who try to “fix” the canon of a story) made no sense for the characterisation of the characters or who they became as a person because the reasons were erased. There is no happy ending to Persona 5, there is no way to fix everything, and I feel a lot of people may have seen Maruki as an attack on this. It’s okay to feel sad about how something ended, but sometimes you just gotta accept it.

This has gotten pretty wordy, and it’s just a long winded way to say that my opinions on Maruki haven’t changed all that much, other than those 4 hours I spent on merciless trying to beat his fucking fight and getting more and more wound up each time I fucking failed. Anyways, the point is I love him, I love the game, and if anyone is meanies to him again I’ll fucking kill them all with my autism laser beams.

PLEASE GUSH ABOUT THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

Welp, I've officially been asked and so I'm taking this permission and running with it.

To save y'all I'm gonna hide this insanity below the cut. I am not an expert in any of these topics and I wrote this on my phone so apologies for any errors!:

This is structured around some nonsense essay titles I made up in about five seconds, but actually turned out to cover most of what I love about this film <3

The essential duality of hero and villian in Lego Batman

So first to address what Hideo Kojima says here (I can't believe I just wrote that...)

So one of the main themes/story beats of Lego Batman is that Batman is a hero who looks and acts a lot Iike a villian both in the context of the film and throughout his canon.

This is both true of his appearance and his arrogance and rejection of teamwork/asking for help and human connection.

In the film this is contrasted with Joker who is a villian, but desperate for human connection, good at teamwork/asking for help, less visually scary, and actually a big softie to many important people in his life (see Harley and Batman).

Both characters are explicitly called out about this contradiction by Phyllis the gatekeeper of the phantom zone who questions whether Joker is really evil enough for super jail and Batman good enough to be a hero.

For example, late in the film Joker demonstrates his explicitly ambiguous villainy by helping save the day by encouraging the Gotham villians to join the efforts to rejoin the city (literally and figuratively 😉)

As is pointed out in the tweet linked, both of their hero and villainy is largely in relation to each other. Batman is only a hero in relation to the Joker who is in turn classified as a villian. Both Batman and Joker are definitionally incomplete and aimless without each other.

Added to this are the bad guys from the phantom zone who are framed as evil, and truly evil in a way that the Joker is not, but Batman might be due to his treatment of others.

Each of these villians are spurred to action by the Joker by him invoking their corresponding heroes - as these essential opponents with whom each bad guy has a similar relationship. In this way the villian/hero dyad is reinforced.

And as Hideo Kojima says "They are more than rivals, they are inevitable." Like...

So we are left with the question of what defines heroism and villainy? For Lego Batman a lot of the answer lies in our relationships and relations with others and our community.

60 years of canon: making a 21st Century Batman film

Okay so as a reward for reading this far, I will tell you a badly kept secret. I freaking love superheroes and Batman in particular. I've read enough comics and seen enough films etc to get the majority of the in-jokes and references in this film (and there a crap tonne). Those are my qualifications for the following statements:

I firmly believe this is one of the best portrayals of Batman and Bruce Wayne in all Batman media. Just... somehow this dumb movie just got him perfectly.

Somehow it captures both the inherent comedy of Batman, and also the angst and the drama of Batman.

Somehow also manages to be one of my fav Dick Graysons and Alfreds. Parenting your troubled child, anyone?

So Lego Batman is in the same universe as the Lego movies.

I absolutely love how they integrate references to the comics, to the shows, to the movies, to Batman's rogues gallery etc, and I think in a way that isn't too alienating to newbies and just super fun as fan. Condiment Man! The Penguin and his penguins! Catwoman hacking and saying "Meow Meow"!

References the big classic gotchas of Batman on a loving way, rather than in a needly way! Yes, why is crime so high?

Batman hating Superman in a very dumb fun way is my favourite trope in Batman media, just after Batman and Superman being in love 😘

How to write a multiverse: the case of Lego Batman

It integrates the world rules of The Lego Movie i.e. this world takes place on a literal table, probably in the same basement.

This manifests in the climax but also throughout! In the first act bomb threat, the phantom zone villains, and just... Will Arnett Batman!

Batman is still a Master Builder! It's blink and you miss it, but it's an element in the climax and throughout.

So it's kinda fun if you're familiar with the other movies and the wider multiverse, but it really doesn't ruin anything if you aren't.

Just a refreshing approach in this world of multi-film tie-ins!

The music slaps!!!!!!!!!!!

Who's the (Bat) Man?: The music of Lego Batman

The Batman intro song? Amazing. Literally a joke a second.

Animation in the 21st century: the case study of Lego Batman

The animation is sooooooooo coool!!!!

So there has been this general trend towards realism in CGI animation which is... okay... It's pretty technically cool, but for lots of people who love animation it can result in a loss in terms of what makes animation a great medium in of itself - for me this looks like experimentation with motion, colour, shape, and style!

Lord and Miller (the producers of this film) have also been involved with some of my favourite animated films of the last decade - for example, the Cloudy with a Chance series and Into the Spiderverse. I don't know if that's a conscious thing on their part (could google, but this is already too serious without extra research lol), but essentially if they're involved in an animated film I'm gonna be confident I'm gonna love the animation.

This film is brightly coloured, deeply silly, and a film that is firmly rooted in it's medium.

Obviously everything is lego shaped but the way they use that!! Sometimes you forget they are little lego people, but sometimes they hit you over the head with it! With stop-motion sytle! With little visual jokes! With their little lego arms!

Everything is so shaped!!!!

Bromance, clostedness and the homoerotic in Lego Batman

TL;DR Batman and the Joker are gay for each other.

Okay so one of the central conflicts of this film is that the Joker wants Batman to tell him that he values their relationship. And when Batman refuses he makes the face in the gif above...

Like damn dude, that is one sad lil guy

Joker spends the rest of the movie trying to make Batman say the Joker has an important and meaningful place in his life and acts very divorced until he does.

Obviousssllllllyyyyy this is not necessarily inherently homoerotic or romantic... but also... fellas...

The resolution of the film is Batman admitting that the Joker is special to him and affirming his value. 🥺🥺🥺

There is a lot to say about Batman's performance of hypermasculinity, including the way he pushes away all discussion of emotions and relationships. This is strongly contrasted with Joker's more queer-coded characterisation and Robin's actively camp portrayal. However, the resolution of the film is partially driven by Batman finding a place for both the Joker and Robin in his heart and life, and allowing himself to relax his performance of solitary toxic masculinity.

Arguably the film is leaning towards Barbara/Batman as a romantic pairing but ultimately they end up as like a friend dynamic which is honestly kinda lovely.

One of my fav reoccuring jokes is that Batman and Bruce Wayne are "roommates" and are co-parenting Dick/Robin. Like it's not a joke that Robin maybe has two dads, but that Batman is so reluctant to open up to people he'll lie about his identity to such an extent. Also Robin is just soooooooo psyched about having two dads! (see gif below and my final lil rant).

Found family, generational trauma and fatherhood in Lego Batman

Oh look, it's tumblr's favourite trope! Who doesn't love a bit of found family? Batman canon has a very strong history of this trope which is largely absent from the live action films (which i am so cool and chill about of course)

As mentioned, Robin thinks he has two dads for like half the film and is so stoked!!!! He loves his new family deeply, completely, and immediately.

Alfred is Batman's dad!!!!!! And Batman is Alfred's son!!!!!!! And Robin is Alfred's grandson!!!!

Batman lost his parents to the violence he seeks to remedy and locks away his heart and rejects his friends and family out of fear of losing them to that violence too 😭😭😭😭

I don’t personally see the appeal in liking a comic book character while disliking all of the comics that they’ve ever been in. liking a character in concept only and not enjoying any of their actual content is no fun for me.

I get that people have other avenues of content like fanfiction and such which enables them to have unofficial content that handles a character in a way that they prefer but I’ve never been big on fanfiction myself because I’m involved in comic book fandom because I enjoy reading comics.

there have certainly been characters that I have thought were interesting conceptually but ultimately didn’t enjoy what was done with them but they don’t hold my interest for very long because I can just read other comic books with other characters that have better executed stories.

I’ve seen people go so far as to say that a character could be good if only [x] and then just describe a completely different character. like, at a certain point people’s attachment to one single character can prevent them from reading other stories that they could enjoy. they don’t even necessarily have to move on, you can remain interested in one fav and still try out other comics.

and then on the other side of the idea of good characters but bad comics, is characters actually having good comics but people don’t read them because they assume they’ll be bad because they’re in a ‘comics are all bad and fandom is all good’ echo chamber. like, there are some characters where most of the stuff I see on this site about them is completely disconnected from any of their actual canonical portrayals in comics and I’ve seen that defended as people just having fun, and sure if people are having fun with that then I’m not gonna tell them they have to stop, but I truly do believe that the widespread mentality of ‘just making stuff up is the actual fun way to engage with comic book characters’ has led to people missing out on comics they could very well enjoy

Arthur/Eames (Inception) fics rec

4. I've got nothing to do today but smile (the only living boy in New York) (20k) by gyzym - loved the pacing and Arthur for passion for baking when stressed out, but could not really relate with his burn out. 10 years later tho??? can totally relate and this fic is one of my inspiration to open a coffeeshop

5. My Lungs Are Fresh and Yours To Keep (18k) by black Betty 26 - Did I almost tattoo the title of this fic on my body? Yes. Yes I almost did. Band!AU, super sexy Arthur, great tension between Arthur and Eames, LOVED IT.

6. Rough Trade (23k) by whiskyrunner - warning some strong internalized homophobia but damn the sex is hot and the alchemy between Arthur and Eames is incredible

7. Late night phone call (15k) by sparkledark - this one holds a special place for me because when I was REALLY feeling down, I thought about it and was okay in this one fanfic when Eames was feeling v low he called a suic*de hotline and everything went better and that's why I called one and yup it probably saved my life. so kudos to this pic and the characterization of Eames is to die for.

8. Towards Zero (20k) by Mirabella - great plot, with a twist at the end, I read it like 10 times

9. In Our Kingdom by the Shore (10k) by Alezane - if you love Gothic retelling, the little mermaid and great writing? This fic is for you. One of my absolute favs.

nothing we could judge (12k) by green_postit - a fic about Eames and Sherlock in college. Their banter is everything and they are super smart in the fic, taught me new psy concepts and got a brain boner

Trivium (5k) by thefourofswords - academia and philosophy??? that's my love language baby
