I have been dancing tango for about 1,5 years now and it's actaully amazing to think about that I always, ALWAYS just wanted to dance solo for the longest time of my life. I never liked dancing with somebody else, I didn't like holding hands while dancing, I was afraid of the intimacy and closeness in most partner dances. It just made me feel so uncomfortable. I avoided it whenever I could, I didn't take dance lessons with my school in class 8 or 9, which is fairly normal to do actually in Germany. I refused, I was ashamed and anxious. I wasn't exactly popular in my school, had been bullied in two different schools and I could not fatom why, I just didn't want to be close to anybody. So, as a result, although I liked dancing in itself, one of the most fun things as I would only learn much later after school, was taken from me. I had this huge fear of partner dances and the feeling of being unable to get away when getting uncomfortable. About two years ago, I started thinking about how sad it actually was that I could not dance really, no waltz, no cha cha, no disco fox, nothing. And the chance had been there, years ago. I was always fascinated with latin dance. So when I saw that during Art Week in my hometown there was an open day to join a small group of tango dancers for free and try a few tango moves, I took my chance. Not only did I meet some people from other cultures that day, who were starters like me, I actually found that dancing tango was not as hard as I had feared it would be. In fact, it was very simple and smooth. I was shown some first steps and moves, which I found looked incredibly elegant and were still fairly easy to do. The most astonishing thing was, it was completely free, and the course would always be, as I was told. A free dance class! Where do you find that these days! After a lot of fun during that one hour I was there, I wanted to come back. But I was busy and very caught up in my own things, plus, I think anxiety also got in the way. After 3 months, I reached out to Cris, who is the founder and dance teacher of "Tango offen und bunt" and before I knew what was happening, I found myself in his kitchen, where I practised lines for the theater project and their latest play. Just another beautiful aspect of that group- they practise theater. From that day on, I came on Tuesdays to sway, step, fly over the dance floor with people who came from all parts of the world. It's been almost 2 years and 3 theater plays later, and these people have become some part of my family. I never want to miss it again, ever. I am by far still not a perfect tango dancer, there is still so much to learn. But what I gained from coming out of my comfort zone that day 2 years back, workshops, little gatherings, our theater practises and performances, nobody can take that away. I received so much support and love from my group and could give back to them by bringing in new people, some of them who have become stable parts of the group. We celebrated Halloween 🎃 together last year, celebrated birthdays, we give each other love ans support. I lost my fear of intimate dances, though not all at once, there were many times I bailed, left early, or felt like I wanted to get away after dancing for a few minutes. Nobody ever forced me or judged me though. I will be forever grateful for everything these people have done for me, given me, all the love and support, all the incredible kind words I receive, as much as the criticism. And now I cannot wait to learn more new dances, to see what else we can do and where we can go. Since a lot of times, there are conversations in Spanish (a huge part of our people comes from Latin America), I now have an incentive to finally learn some Spanish.😁😉 Let's see what will happen in the future, as so much is not clear at the moment. I know for a fact though that I can always rely on my tangueros. 💃🕺
