So I just rewatched Avengers : Age of Ultron and I feel like making an entire fucking essay about why this movie works when recent Marvel movies don't, but in short : apart from the fact that Disney clearly doesn't care anymore about the quality as long as those movies satisfy a part of the public, and FAST, AOU worked because the source of some of the frustration you have can be excused by lack of screen time. And that screen time is still well used for the stuff essential for the plot. Feelings are for solo movies in the old Marvel. Which is not necessarily a good thing but it can work : and they made it work by still giving us tension, emotion, reflexion, they just are linked to the plot instead if exploring and showing more of their characters. They did pretty good for the time they had. And it never pretends to be anything else than a good action movie, so some of its other flaws are still there but you won't mind if you're here for that. Because it's good at it.

At least that's what I got of it.
